state of the art setting... Beeston Youth and Community Centre is well known for hosting fabulous parties and events. With a recent refurbishment, the state of the art lighting and sound system will amaze any guests whether it be for a wedding, party or event. Breeze finds out more... After a seven-week modernisation project the centre which is based at West End, Beeston, re-opened it’s doors to once again welcome local people and those wishing to book the fantastic venue for parties and special events. The main hall has been refurbished including a new roof installation. Amongst the improvement have been LED lighting and solar panels which will boost green energy sources for the building and reduce it’s long-term running costs. The main hall now features a lighting installation with an ‘up to the minute’ fibre optic centrepiece display. Beeston Youth and Community Centre is a registered charity established in1975. It was set up to serve the needs of local people, so that they had a high quality meeting place and could use it for group meetings, lectures and guided recreational indoor games and activities. It has, over the years, served the group social needs of all members of the community from people hosting tea dances to fitness classes and youth activities in the main hall. The charity has reinvested more than £70,000 into the project which will help save money in the long term on property repairs and maintenance, by carrying out modernisation works now. The work itself has been carried out by the county council. The regular community groups we have using the centre at present are as follows: Monday mornings: Community Church Play Group. Monday 6 - 7pm: Pole Fitness. Monday 7 - 9pm: Tetsudo. Tuesday mornings: Beeston Short Mat Bowls Club. Tuesday 7 - 8pm: Taekwondo. Wednesday: 1 - 4pm Tea Dance

Hall is available Fri / Sat / Sun for private events and we have some availability during the week for community events.

Cheers! Wollaton Cricket Club would like to invite you to join us for our sixth annual beer festival, at the Wollaton Sports Association Ground from the evening of Thursday 25th May, right through to and including Bank Holiday Monday 29th May. The festival will offer tipplers a choice of up to 20 fantastic quality ales and ciders, from a wide range of the country’s best breweries, including right here in Nottingham. Prices start from under £3.00 a pint, with the bar open from 6.00pm until 11.00pm on the Thursday and 12 noon until 11pm Friday-Sunday. The festival will wind down at 6pm on the Monday, with the bar again open at Midday. There is outdoor seating available, from where you will be able to enjoy your beverage while watching the weekend’s cricket at one of the most picturesque village grounds in the county. What a way to relax on a Bank Holiday. You can also tuck into some food with your beer. There will be a very reasonably priced BBQ on the Friday evening, and other delicious snacks such as pasties and samosas, from local suppliers, available throughout the festival. Joe Fish, WCC club captain said: “The festival is getting bigger and better each year and we are delighted that, once again, Nottingham Brewery are helping us deliver what we are sure will be another fantastic event. “There will be a wide range of ales available and we want to encourage the local community and beer drinkers from afar to join us for a long weekend of fun-filled supping! “This is our biggest fundraising event of the year and a lot of hard work goes into putting it together, so it would be great to see an even bigger turnout than last year. We would love to have your support, but most of all your company!”

The Wollaton Sports Association Ground is situated on Wollaton Road, NG8 2AN, and is only a two-minute walk away from the NCT 30 and Trent Barton Rainbow 2 bus stops. Wollaton Cricket Club has been a hub of the local community since the end of the 19th century and has teams in each of the top two divisions of the South Nottinghamshire Cricket League. All funds raised from the beer festival will be invested into maintaining and improving the club’s junior section, which currently boasts 200 playing members. There are sponsorship opportunities available for local businesses looking to advertise their brand to club members, spectators and festival guests. Barrel sponsorship starts at £60 and includes your company logo on the barrel and in the programme, as well as 10 free pints of any beer or cider! Our £250 corporate sponsorship package offers businesses the same exposure, plus their company logo on our website and a banner around the ground for the duration of the cricket season. If you would be interested in one of our sponsorship packages, please email chrisy.wollaton@gmail.com for more information.

The Flying High Trust hosts super art event for 16 Nottinghamshire primary schools! Children from all over Nottinghamshire came together at Ernehale Junior School in Arnold for a supersized art event with the help of professional artist Sarah Palmer. The pupils represented 16 member schools of The Flying High Trust coming together to make willow and papier mache lanterns for an awards ceremony that will take place later in the year at The Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham. Chris Wheatley, Chief Executive Officer at The Flying High Trust said that the lanterns will make a dazzling display, “The Trust Arts event has been a huge success once again and brought together children from across our sixteen schools who demonstrate a real

talent and passion for the arts. Working with each other and with a local artist enables them to develop their team working skills, make new friends and share their love for all things creative. All of the Flying High Trust schools feel strongly that we should provide opportunities for every child beyond the traditional curriculum and to raise their aspirations. We will continue to hold Trust wide events to ensure we provide our children with inspirational experiences. The Flying High Trust has member primary academies all over Nottinghamshire including Cotgrave Candleby Lane (Cotgrave), Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy, Peafield Lane Academy (Mansfield Woodhouse), Haddon Primary and Nursery School (Carlton), Porchester Junior School (Carlton), Killisick Junior School (Arnold), Ernehale Junior School (Arnold), Hillside Primary and Nursery School (Hucknall), The Flying High Academy (Ladybrook Mansfield), Beeston Fields Primary and Nursery School, Greythorn Primary School (West Bridgford), Greenwood Primary & Nursery School (Kirkby in Ashfield), Leamington Primary School (Sutton in Ashfield), Mapplewells Primary & Nursery School (Sutton in Ashfield), Horsendale Primary School (Nuthall) and Edwalton Primary School.

When you speak the truth you can always expect fireworks because not everyone likes to be put on the spot. The new, confident, happier you is causing someone to feel uncomfortable, probably because they are losing their grip over your emotions. A new regime is about to commence that includes a change of direction in just about every area of your life. Taurus This is not a time to think about your own needs. You need to consider other people's feelings and understand their situation. You know you can push someone's buttons too hard sometimes so that they really get angry and irritated about the most petty, insignificant things. Work diligently at completing projects and tying up loose ends before moving onto the next phase. . Gemini If you are hell bent on picking a fight with someone, you may jeopardise your chances of happiness or ever hearing those wedding bells ring out. Give your loved ones a bit of time and space, after all, everyone seems to be stressed out about the most ridiculous of matters. Ensure credit card bills are paid on time and don’t be tempted to borrow too much money you can ill afford to repay on time. With a little bit of patience and forward planning, important issues can be resolved. Someone very close to you needs your assistance and support. Do not waste time being in awe of people who appear wealthier and more successful than you because behind closed doors, the truth can often be very different. New task, a fresh start, a different routine all add to you feeling bigger, brighter and better than before.

breezemagazine16

A certain matter may still be up in the air putting you in a very difficult position. Its important to be tactful when dealing with someone who is experiencing a deeply sensitive time because you never know what lies beneath the surface. Slow your speed and stop tearing around like a lunatic. Virgo You need to be open minded about a new situation otherwise disagreements and arguments are likely. You are used to being the boss in most relationships but someone new on the scene had different ideas and could be a force to be reckoned with. Snap decisions regarding money put you on edge, especially if your gut feelings are telling you to tread cautiously. You are full of great ideas, but will you put your money where your mouth is? Someone isn’t taking you very seriously and this could spark off a major row. Your day to day routine is about to change, whether it involves friends, family or romance, things haven’t looked this good in ages. No matter how much you may be forced to depend on others for various things, you are still master of your own fate and will only do exactly what you want to do. This is no time for regret. What has taken place in the past belongs right there, in the past. No doubt you are still a little anxious about one particular issue, but if you are be patient.

Try to take a little extra care with finances. Over spending on trivia or being over generous with the wrong people will force you to do a bit more juggling than you are used to. If you are experiencing difficulties in a personal relationship, follow your instincts and get to the bottom of what is really going on behind the scenes. An old love from your distant past may suddenly reappear from out of the blue. Capricorn The choices you make now regarding a certain relationship will determine in which direction you will be forced to travel in next. Its important that you are honest with yourself about what you want and need out of life in order to be happy. Bide your time before making any rash decisions affecting finances and material stability. A new friendship could develop into something very meaningful that could change your life forever. Aquarius Its time to get out of that rut and do something constructive about making a few positive changes for the better. A fresh approach is all that is needed for you to feel happier, more fulfilled and relaxed about the future. Some good fortune regarding your financial prospects is on its way and if you are single and looking for excitement, someone new will arrive on the scene who will do more than just tick all your boxes. Pisces Your intuitive powers are peaking and you will be spotting new clues regarding a certain situation more frequently. You may be ready for what is about to happen, but some fresh information may succeed in 'blowing you away'. A slow burning friendship is growing more important. Who or what are you finding so compelling that you are thinking of packing your bags and waving good bye to an old way of life?

lace up for national walking month... Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, is urging the public to ‘Try20’ during National Walking Month this May. The campaign encourages people to walk for 20 minutes every day throughout May and observe the big differences small steps can make. Last year, Living Streets’ Try20 campaign saw thousands of people across the UK pledge to walk for 20 minutes a day. A follow up survey in December found that 75 per cent of pledgers were still walking for 20 minutes a day and reporting stories of weight loss, money saving, improved social life and increased fitness. Living Streets recommends walking as a free, easy and fun way to improve your health. From a lower risk of contracting heart disease, certain cancers, depression and type 2 diabetes, to aiding weight loss and reducing feelings of stress and isolation. This year, Living Streets will also be commissioning an extensive survey to try and find the best cities in the UK for walking judged on a range of criteria, including safety, air pollution and street clutter.

breezemagazine18

A leader board will be announced in time for the launch of National Walking Month 2017. Anyone across the UK will be able to ‘Rate their city walk’ throughout National Walking Month in an online quiz. The charity will then offer recommendations on action participants could take to make their city more walking-friendly.

Try20 this May: add a 20 minute walk into your day. This small change makes a big difference to your health and wellbeing; 20 minutes of walking a day is a good step towards achieving 150 minutes of physical activity a week as recommended by the Chief Medical Officer; You don’t have to go out of your way to exercise: walk your daily journey to work, to the shops, or the school run – or skip a stop on public transport; Getting people out of their cars and onto their feet is part of the solution to the UK’s congestion and air pollution problems; 'Rate your walk’ and help us improve spaces and create a walking nation where everyone can enjoy the benefits this simple act brings on streets that are fit for walking. HAPPY EASTER – but watch where you store the chocolate and other treats!

Easter seems to be a time of finding the maximum number of ways to eat chocolate in a short space of time. Obviously this is terrific but it does carry some danger for our dogs. Dogs are often quite keen on chocolate but relatively small amounts can be disastrous. Less than an ounce of dark chocolate can be fatal to a small dog. It is important that dogs are kept well away from this seasonal treat and some of the other Easter fare. For example, hot cross buns (raisins), daffodils and sweets can all be dangerous for dogs too. At Churchcroft Vets, head vet George says: “If dogs eat chocolate in dangerous quantities they must be seen urgently by a veterinary centre equipped to deal with this day or night. If there’s any suspicion that your dog may have eaten chocolate or any other poison you should call the vet immediately to discuss it”. Churchcroft Vets run their own emergency service for their patients and can be contacted by their clients at any time on 0115 922 4855. It is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the emergency procedure for your own pet before you need it.

Brownies in Attenborough have been busy packing up ‘birthday boxes’ for children whose cash-strapped families struggle to put on a birthday celebration. The 19 members of 4th Attenborough Brownie Unit – all aged between 7 and 10 - have packed eight shoe-boxes with partythemed goodies, raising over £100 to fund the project themselves by filling empty Smarties tubes with coins. Splitting into teams, the Brownies decided on the contents of each box and whether it would be for a boy or girl, making sure to include a cake tin, cake mix and icing. ‘It was a really useful exercise in working out how far their money would go and how to shop responsibly in our local supermarket,’ says Brownie Leader Sarah Cooke. The girls also made birthday cards and decorated the boxes. The Brownies’ birthday boxes have now been delivered to the food bank at the Haven Centre on Wadsworth Road in Stapleford, from where they will be distributed to local families. ‘Our Brownies are very pleased to feel they are helping other children celebrate their special days, and it’s been rewarding for the Leaders to see how seriously the girls have taken this challenge’ says Sarah. The Brownie units in Attenborough are hoping to recruit more adult volunteers from the local community in order to keep opportunities like this open to as many girls as possible. Anyone interested in helping – even if only on an occasional basis - is invited to contact Sarah Cooke at the_4th_attenborough_brownies@yahoo.co.uk Enquiries about volunteering with Girlguiding across Nottinghamshire are always welcome: call 0115 987 7220, e-mail office@girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

URBAN LIVING Most people live in an urban environment to some extent. For those with a small back yard or maybe a balcony, we need to look at ways to lift these spaces into something truly alive. Ferns Ferns are great for shady corners. They make seas of textured underplanting with their soft, arching fronds. Taller selections, along with tree ferns make exceptional punctuation marks and striking focal-points. To grow them, their needs differ between species, but generally they prefer humusrich, moist soil in deep or partial shade. Combine with contrasting leaf shapes such as broad-leaved brunnera, heart-shaped epimedium or palmate hellebores. The best type for an urban garden is perhaps the dryopteris wallichiana which has

breezemagazine 24

tufts of lance-shaped fronds to around 1m Another type of fern, the asplenium nidus with strap-shaped, bright green fronds is slightly larger but also suitable. Polystichum setiferum 'divisilobum Iveryanum' is robust and winter-green with lance-shaped fronds and adds delight to any shaded garden space (such as a lower balcony).

Acer Another most beautiful plant, with its graceful habit, beautiful foliage and slow growth rate, Japanese maples are great for smaller gardens. They also make good container plants that won’t need regular re-potting. Growing them is not difficult despite what some may tell you: they do well in fertile, slightly acidic (important to get that right), moist but welldrained soil, in sun or partial shade. Just make sure you protect a. palmatum cultivars from cold winds and late frost.

You can combine with early spring bulbs like snowdrops or shade-tolerant perennials such as the grey-leaved dicentra formosa 'Bacchanal'. For an urban garden these three are good starting points: acer palmatum ‘garnet' grows to around 1.5m tall, with deep brownish-red foliage that gets brighter in autumn; acer palmatum ‘shindeshojo' is slightly larger, up to 2.5m with bright red leaves turning reddishorange in autumn and the acer palmatum ‘katsura' grows to 4m and has delightful yellow-orange foliage, margined pink in spring. All of these plants suit shaded areas in any sized garden but are especially helpful where space is tight and light is not abundant due to being in a built up area. Built up need not mean less beautiful! (continues...)

Other ways to lift your garden space A simple way to make lovely little planting areas in your garden is to ‘section’ areas (...continued) using decking and stone slabs - there are a myriad ways to lay this out and you need to look at your own space to decide but go for contrasts treat your decking to make it dark and use light stone, or use dark stone with light decking. Such strong landscaped lines are the hallmark of a contemporary garden design and enhance any planting you add into the mix. Gravel chips come in all colours and sizes and can be used to create pleasing textures, into which growing areas are placed or sunk. Good shade loving plants include hostas, hydrangea, fuschia and pelargonium. These can be pot planted or containerised. If you need some soft space to relax on then don’t overlook artificial grass for small areas: if laid properly with a hardcore foundation it soaks up water well for drainage and can look softer on the eye than an entirely hard surfaced environment. New designs are extremely convincing in appearance and are, of course, very low maintenance. We will be covering your annuals in forthcoming issues but it’s a bit early yet for those. Take this month and better weather to ‘set the scene’ for more colour to come. Enjoy the textures of ferns and other plants now that will be ok to plant. As always, keep learning and... Enjoy!

lord arthur saviles crime

ARCADE PLAYERS 26TH – 29TH APRIL 2017 DUCHESS THEATRE, WEST GATE, LONG EATON LORD ARTHUR SAVILE’S CRIME

The Arcade Players are delighted to announce their third and final play of this season. “Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime”, written by Constance Cox, was based on a short story by Oscar Wild, set in the 1890s. Lord Arthur is about to get married to the young, beautiful and talented Sybil Morton, but Lady Julia Morton, Sybil’s mother, is determined to ensure that her daughter is making a wise choice in husbands, and calls in the services of an eminent cheiromantis (a palm reader), named Podgers, who claims to be able to read not just the past, but also the future, in people’s hands. Podgers satisfies Lady Julia on Arthur’s past, but privately warns him that he will most certainly commit a murder at some time in the future. Arthur determines get this unpleasant business out of the way straightway, so that his marriage to Sybil will not be tainted later on. His choice of victim falls initially on Lady Clementina, his elderly and infirm aunt, but although careful preparations are made for poison to be administered (mainly by Baines, Arthur’s loyal butler), the job is botched and fails. Consequently, the wedding has to be postponed, much to everyone’s consternation. Further attempts to murder other family members, with the assistance of Herr Winkelkopf, an anarchist, expert in explosions, also fail and it seems the wedding will never take place, but then surprising revelations send the story in a completely new direction. Lord Arthur finishes in the hands of the police! Tickets are available online at or alternatively you can call the Arcade Players on 01332 875350. Or why not pop down to the Duchess Theatre, West Gate, Long Eaton on a Saturday morning to buy in person and have a cup of coffee. “We look forward to seeing you at the theatre”.
