As a homeowner with a newly built conservatory you will be full of pride to see how it looks – so clean and bright. Years of weathering, nature and airborne pollutants will sadly take their toll and perhaps now when you look at your conservatory it looks a bit grubby and tired. You know that a thorough clean of the roof, PVC and gutters would make it look great again - but you don’t really like the idea of cleaning it yourself – so who can you find to do it? In 2006 Conserv-a-Clean Ltd was established to provide the solution to that problem. They utilise specialist two-piece ladders that enable them to reach every part of the roof and carefully selected cleaning agents to remove even the most stubborn marks. Finally the surfaces are hand polished to leave the conservatory looking like brand new. The clean is very effective and long lasting; Conserv-a-Clean find that many of their customers contact them again some 3-4 years after the original clean. In addition to conservatories they also clean house rooflines (soffits, fascias, bargeboards, gutters etc), carports and canopies. For a no-obligation quote please call Conserv-a-Clean on 0115 925 9040.

Young At Heart We all hope to get older sort of! But will we be the recipients of a happy body, a happy mind? Hopefully so, but maybe for those who are already there they need a little help and guidance. Whether it is with health & wellbeing or more practical issues such as insurance and will making. Ageing need not be as it used to be - something to be feared. The way in which older people behave and dress has changed dramatically in the past twenty years. Whilst nobody wishes to appear to be trying to be younger than they really (well maybe a

little younger!) it is accepted without question that both men and women can go on enjoying positive and constructive lives well into their sixties and seventies. Better medical care has altered life prospects and given those who once could only accept the inevitable a new lease of life. Hip, knee and other joint replacements have taken the dread out of infirmity for many. meaning that sports and hobbies can be enjoyed well into the twilight years. Here is the Breeze guide to help along the way - enjoy life the way you were meant to!

Keep in the swing of things You may have friends who do it, or work colleagues from the office may have invited you out. Even your spouse has had a go and got into the swing of it. However, despite being on the verge of having more free time, you've never previously been interested in that most archetypal activity of the newly retired: golf. If you've never teed off or putted on the green, is it ever too late to take up the sport of golf? The simple answer is, it's never too late! Furthermore; equipment manufacturers and golf facilities are trying to cater to the new golfer as never before. It's an ideal time for someone considering taking up the game, and with coaching on hand the beginner can quickly progress to really be able to enjoy the game. Beginners who are in their 50s, 60s and 70s no longer see golf as just a hobby for retirement—it has become a more active and engaging alternative and a real benefit to their health & wellbeing. As golf gains in popularity many are drawn into golf these days by their family and friends. They may think 'Oh, my spouse plays' or 'I want to be able to play golf with my kids.' Beginners who take up golf ‘later’ in life may

not always know what to expect. For instance are there special considerations in equipment, lessons or courses to keep in mind? Obviously if you're going to play golf, you're going to need a set of clubs. They don't have to be high-end expensive, but they do have to fit you as a golfer—your size, swing speed, strength, and even possibly your age. The best way to do that is to commit yourself to a club-fitting process. You will benefit from having an expert at a golf facility or store guide you through the selection of clubs to determine what is right for you and your golf swing. The other main consideration might be how much time and money will that take? This can vary from the very modest but a beginner needn’t take out a second mortgage on a set of clubs - again a good club can help and advise on the matter. By seeking advice before you spend any money at all on a set of clubs will avoid a budding beginner having spent their cash on a great piece of equipment that doesn't fit their personal characteristics. At Beeston Fields Golf Club help is at hand for those seeking to really enjoy the game.. If you want to be fitted at the golf club, there is a golf pro who is able to take clients for fittings or lessons - just ask as Beeston Fields Golf Club are friendly club who are keen to welcome new members and strengthen what is already a popular game in the area. Keeping our mental as well as physical health Leading local Psychotherapist, Martin Smith PhD runs a well established private practice in Long Eaton and specialises in helping people overcome issues around stress and anxiety especially in mid and later life. As we take better care of ourselves through exercise, better diet and general better life style we are living longer and enjoying better lives. We may joke about the 50‘s and 60‘s being the new 30‘s and 40‘s but it is true. The problem is that better physical health does not always mean better mental health. Being able to adapt to the changing decades can at times be difficult. We may feel physically healthy but may not be able to adjust mentally to changing life. These changes may include positives such as retirement, children growing up, more time on your hands. These changes can also be difficult and change may not always be straight forward or positive Martin has found more of his clients are over 50 and struggling to cope with changes in their lives and coming to terms with changes in work, relationships and life in general. If you are struggling with changes in your life Martin can help you manage these changes and take full benefit of what should be a great time of life. Call Martin on 07 973 410 010 or email itctherapy@aol.com to arrange an appointment, he is available for appointments at times to suit, especially weekends and evenings.

Meet Natalie Johnson the proud owner of The Pearly Whites Studio in the Japanese Water Gardens. “I’ve grown up locally in Sandiacre and from a young age always wanted to do something exciting and challenging. At 18, I decided to go to university and complete a degree in criminal law. As exciting as this was, I wanted more life experience and so applied to be a Special Constable for Nottinghamshire Police. This gave me some of the challenges and demands I strived for. On completion of my degree, I moved into drug rehabilitation and have been in this field for the past eighteen months. During this time I found myself exploring other interests in the area of cosmetics and beauty. I soon became a fully qualified and competent nail technician and teeth whitening technician. My inspiration for setting up a professional studio came from my partner Tom. He gave me the encouragement I needed to take on such a challenge. Tom’s skills fitting kitchens meant he could design and re-fit the contemporary studio we both have today. I feel so proud to have something to call ours. The time and effort that family and friends have put in has been invaluable and I can’t thank them enough. I’d especially like to thank Tom for all his help and support, because of him, I’ve never felt happier. I hope The Pearly Whites Studio reflects the love and effort we’ve put into it” The Pearly Whites Studio at 251 Toton Lane, Toton, Nottingham NG9 7JA or to book an appointment call 0115 9395765

Funeral Pre-payment plans are becoming increasingly popular as people realise the benefits both for themselves and their loved ones. However, choosing the right plan provider is important. Many plans are now taken out by post or even sold door-to-door, which can lead to future difficulties. Before committing yourself, check that your funeral can be carried out by the funeral home of your choice – many plans sold by charities or other third party agents are linked to a particular funeral group, which may not be your preferred choice, or even have a branch in your area. Check also that the plan includes everything you need – many plans include only basic cremation fees, meaning that a Service in Church or burial of cremated remains would lead to additional charges. Finally, check that the administration fees are identifiable – some plans pay high commission levels to the plan seller, so only a proportion of your money is invested towards your funeral. With almost 20 years’ experience with Perfect Choice Funeral Plans, we at the Eastwood Funeral Partnership are always happy to give advice to anyone thinking of taking out a funeral plan, or concerned that an existing plan doesn’t fit their needs.

Looking for something to enjoy and keep you positive? Why not sing with Grand Central. Breeze finds out more... Singing is not only fun but has even been shown by some studies to improve health and wellbeing! It has been likened to eating chocolate. “It produces the same feel good endorphins without the calories” says Helen Astrid a renowned singing teacher. East Midlands Barbershop Harmony Club perform as the Grand Central Chorus. This male Chorus formed in 1991 and they gained recognition unexpectedly quickly when they won the British National Barbershop Championship in 1993 at their first attempt. This was with their current Director John Grant who has recently returned to the Chorus after an absence of fourteen years. Since 1993 they have won the British Championship on three more occasions and made it to the finals of the BBC/Sainsbury’s ‘Choir of the Year’ competition a similar number of times. Their most recent success was coming third in the Championship at Llandudno in May this year. Grand Central’s competing and performing programmes have taken them to a wide range of venues across the UK, Ireland, Europe and the USA, the latter country as a result of winning here and going to represent Britain in the International Competition. This may make them sound like an elite group but nothing could be further from that with a mix of ordinary people who by dint of some hard work have learnt to blend their voices and produce good harmonies.

“They are the best kept secret of local music success” says Nelson Blackley, who is the bass singer. “I came on a singing course last year and it’s been just wonderful. They are a great bunch and we sing great songs covering a wide range of song styles from up-tempo, easy beat and gospel to popular show tunes and romantic ballads”. Most performances are in the East Midlands. During the last twelve months they have sung for a number of charities including ‘Help for Heroes’ ‘Rainbows Hospice’ and ‘LOROS Hospice’ their last performance being at Long Eaton Carnival in June. In April they visited Spain at the invitation of the Spanish Barbershop Association, performing at their annual Convention and then in May came success at our Convention. Now the Chorus wish to pass on their expertise. They start a six week singing course at 7.15pm on Wednesday, 7th September, 2011 at their base, Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton NG10 4BJ. Males of all ages are welcome. All singing is in a group. Musical knowledge is not a requirement as teaching C.D.’s will be provided along with the music. Just bring your voice and a bottle of water. Where ever you do your singing at present, in the bath, driving to work, at the karaoke, or at the local Musical Society, the group welcomes you to go along and learn the joys of unaccompanied four-part harmony in the Barbershop style.

There is no obligation to join the chorus but they are obliged to improve your singing voice. Visit their website: www.grandcentralchorus.com for more details or ring your local Chorus member Nelson on 0115 925 0235 for advice. The alternative is to e-mail martin.york@tiscali.co.uk It may be possible to arrange a lift with a current member. If you are one of those ‘hesitant singers’ then why not go along to a rehearsal on any Wednesday and have a look at what the group do?

Are you one of those people who can’t wait to retire, or one of those who dread the day when retirement comes? Breeze meets a local group that can guide you through this important time in your life... Keeping young at heart and viewing life with expectation and happiness and joy will go a long way to physical and mental fitness. It is a fact that the men and women who have retired today are living longer, and are far more healthier than they have ever been. Choosing a new hobby, walking, holidays, grand-children are all ways of keeping one’s self fit. Many retired people find they are busier in retirement than they were whilst at work and wonder how they found the time to go to work. The days have long changed when retired people sat around all day with no purpose in life. The local Volunteer Bureau, Library and Church are all good sources of finding out what is going on in our local community and perhaps what you can give back to society. If you are involved with something or doing something, your own problems don’t seem to be quite so bad. “I have a relative who is 75, who has suffered some ill health over the past few years. He decided to put his efforts into restoring an old Morris 1000 car, completely from scratch. After working on this project for two years, it has done him a power of good and given him a purpose in life which for him has been therapy, joining the Morris Club, meeting at shows and events and sharing experiences whilst in the workshop”.

Young at Heart is a state of mind. We only get out of life what we put into it so live life to the full, and live your dreams. One of the best ways of preparing for retirement is to go on a Pre-Retirement Course. As well as finding out about things we all worry about, i.e. Money – Pensions – Taxes…… you will discover a more rounded package that looks into how to get the right state of mind to view retirement as a positive step. The courses are held every month at Beeston Town Hall. For further details ring the NDPRC on 0115 922 3824 or visit their website www.ndprc.org.uk The courses run over a 3 day duration and cost £199 which includes refreshments, hand-outs, resource pack and a one to one with expert speakers who will answer any personal queries. All our Course Leaders are retired so can give first hand experience and help. It is recommended that attendance is taken on a course within three years of retirement to ensure they have really planned ahead. Pear Tree Yard Therapy Clinic is a group of three clinics which practice within Nottingham. The therapists who work there value the results and feedback that they have from their patients. Here is one testimonial which speaks volumes about their patients’ appreciation of the treatments they have received: Testimonial “My problem started when l had a road traffic accident. At first the pain was just mild but as time went on it spread mainly to my lower back. It turns out that I had twisted my spine and my pelvis was out of alignment. The pain was travelling down my legs and affecting my knees and I was in so much pain l didn't know what to do with myself. I visited my doctors who told me to do some gentle exercises and prescribed me pain killers. They said that my pain was more to do with age. I was fifty at the time. By chance, my mother was listening to a radio program when the host had a chiropractor on his show. The host, who walked with a stick after having a major accident was told by his guest that he could be helped and he offered to treat him. After this radio host had been given a series of treatments he was able to throw away his stick as he no longer needed it. I was so impressed by this account of that I made an appointment at Pear Tree Yard Chiropractic Clinic and from my first visit l had instant relief. Whilst it took a series of treatments to get myself right I was both relieved and delighted to be pain free after many years of putting up with it. I go back ever six months for a body MOT and I'm fifty six years of age now but I feel better than l did in my forties! S Hollingsworth Stapleford

Their trained Money Adviser can offer information and advice on the following areas: • Benefits and tax credits • Pensions and retirement planning • Savings and investments • Insurance • Borrowing and mortgages • Budgeting and debt issues The service is there to explain what a person’s options are in an impartial manner. It does not provide regulated advice and therefore will not recommend you take out a specific financial product. There is no selling involved. The service was set up by the government; however it is independent of government and other providers of financial products and services. The aim of the Money Advice Service is to promote financial capability; an individual’s options will be explained to them, based on their circumstances in order to empower them to take control of their finances and aim to alleviate some of the stress that money worries can cause. The Money Advice Service allows people to make informed choices around their money; consider for instance a single woman reaching state retirement age, working part time and has a couple of credit cards to repay. She also is unsure of what will happen regarding tax and how to get a pension forecast and whether she may be eligible for Pension Credit if she de-

cides to stop working. Quite a lot to have to consider! A money advice session would address all these issues. Or, perhaps an individual is considering taking on a mortgage, but does not know what their mortgage options are, what other additional costs to budget for and where to go to compare different mortgages. Again the Money Advice Service would provide impartial advice in this case too. The service covers most money matters, from benefit entitlements, to how to complain to a financial provider; from the different types of mortgage interest rate deals there are to where to seek free, specialist support with debts - the Money Advice Service is here to help. As a 50-something, my buying habits have changed. Yes, I buy off the internet but this will usually be a product – a purchase that seldom goes wrong meaning I have little cause to contact the company with a complaint. Buying a service however, well that’s a little bit different. As busy people we don’t want to waste time hanging on the phone or battling to get to speak to someone with experience or authority. We want to make one phone call and sort any issues out there and then. As a result, I run my business so that we make your life that little bit easier. No automated telephone system (apart from the compulsory regulatory announcement) but knowledgeable and highly-experienced insurance staff. My staff and I have almost 100 years combined insurance experience rather than sales experience. Yes, we will offer our very best price selected from our panel of over 15 insurers, but by using a broker you will be provided with all of the information you require about the policy we are offering before you make the decision to buy-we will point out the main features, benefits and limitations of your policy verbally – all the things that people tend to bypass on their computer screen because reading it is too cumbersome. We then leave it up to you to do business with us. Once you do, I know that you will be happy. If not, give us a call and ask for me. Richard Oakes. Oakes Insurance Oakes House, Derby Road, Long Eaton, Nottingham NG10 1PD Tel: 0115 973 3343 A typical eight panel installation can make you £19,000 profit over twenty five years and generates £900 per year yet only costs approximately £8,000 to install. These can give a much better return on your investment than a typical bank savings account! After years of talking about climate change, feed in tariffs are fast becoming the accepted norm when upgrading your energy use. Solar PV or ‘Photo Voltaic’ panels are like little electricity generators on your roof, they capture the sun light and turn it in to electricity which you can use or sell back to the electricity company. Feed in tariffs are payments of 43.3p/KWh (index linked) or unit of electricity generated on your roof. You are then free to use it cutting your electricity bill or sell it back to the electricity company, so you are getting paid twice. This sounds too good to be true but the government have introduced these measures in order to attract large numbers of people across the country to install their own generators (solar pv) and help them meet their climate change targets. These payments are government guaranteed for the next twenty five years. Contact Reset Renewables for more information on 0115 8378322 or 07989 428732

Thirty members of Long Eaton Round Table have successfully completed the Hadrians Wall challenge in three days to raise money for local causes and Dementia Charities. Breeze finds out more... Two groups set out – one on Thursday June 23rd with the aim of walking the eighty four or so miles from coast to coast, including the wall. The larger second group headed out on Friday from Heddon on the Wall to finish at Grinsdale completing the gruelling seventy three mile journey. This three day charity walk was one of the most demanding challenges that L.E.R.T have ever engaged in. There were many heavy legs, blistered feet and aching muscles at the end of it all but a great sense of achievement as well. The club would like to thank Steve Barker for organising the event and everyone else who helped make it possible.

breezemagazine 2

A special thanks must go to Julian Scholefield and Pamela Boswell at Brackenfield School for kindly loaning them their minibus for the weekend. Without their support it would have been very difficult to complete the trial. This challenge was undertaken to raise money for dementia charities. If you would like to sponsor them, your money will directly help to improve the quality of life for people affected by dementia in the UK. Please visit

The 5th annual Rainbow of Fun Day and Zany Dog Show takes place in Osgathorpe village on Sunday, 18th September, gates open at 12:30. Admission and car parking are once again free. Find out what’s in store... This popular event has to date raised £10,000 for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People and it really does have something for everyone. Osgathorpe nestles in the Charnwood countryside midway between Loughborough and Ashby de la Zouch. The Storey Arms public house, at the centre of the village, has a long and justifiably proud tradition of tirelessly raising funds for Rainbows Children's Hospice, Loughborough. Over many years Philip, Susan, staff and friends have collected in a staggering £40,000+ to help this well loved local charity. Rainbows cares for babies, children and youngsters from throughout the East Midlands coping with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. At the Fun Day there will be great prizes to win and interesting stalls to browse. Visit East Midlands Dowsing Group to try your hand at dowsing or be amazed by Cantrill’s Magic & Illusions. The ancient craft of working with willow will be demonstrated by Andrew Cowling of Rustic Creations. Take time to relax with an aromatherapy hand or foot massage, visit the Tea Tent and don’t miss out on the BBQ. There’s even a Beer Festival! No Fun Day would be complete without the ever popular Bouncy Castle. Children can also enjoy decorating Gingerbread Men and be expertly ‘decorated’ themselves by fantastic face painters Futuristic Faces. There will even be the opportunity to experience sitting in a real Police car. The Zany Dog show lets every dog have its day in the limelight – even if you’ve never been to a dog show before you’ll soon find out it is all about having a good time. The White House Kennels and Cattery, Osgathorpe, sponsor the dog show each year and make sure there are rosettes and trophies to win. There is no judging by breed but instead daft classes such as

breezemagazine 30

‘Fancy Dress’, ‘Champion Sausage Catcher’, ‘Best Trick’ and ‘Waggiest Tail’ ensure the Zany Dog Show is always 100% fun! Even if you don’t have a dog you’ll be thoroughly entertained by the antics in the ring! There’s also the chance to have a go at both Agility and Flyball with the Fun 4 All Dog Club. Each year different charities involved with dogs are invited to come along to tell visitors about their work. Previously both Pets As Therapy and Pet Blood Bank UK have been there and this time Canine Partners are coming. Canine Partners train assistance dogs for people with disabilities. The dogs perform essential tasks such as helping with dressing, unloading the washing machine and opening doors. Come along and find out more, maybe even see if you could become a ‘Puppy Parent’. For directions, times and details, including the list of dog show classes, visit www.funday.org.uk or call 01530 224579. Join in the fun and have a great day out in Osgathorpe LE12 9TA.

A CHINESE ODYSSEY FOR PARES ODDFELLOWS This month Dr Margaret Gregory took the Pares Oddfellows group on a tour of China. They started in Shanghai and saw the jade 3000-year-old camel and horse before braving the crossroads to start their tour up the Yangtze. This river takes all the traffic through the mountains and the Three Gorges Dam was most impressive. The film showed ancient burial sites high up a mountain and after visiting a temple we were taken to see the Terracotta Army. The excavations are vast and still continuing. This month Breeze takes look at the ‘fun’ things in your garden with lawncare tips to keep things ‘barbecue party ready’ and handy hints on attracting the beauties of nature to your little patch. Knowing what not to do is as important as knowing what to do when it comes to lawn care. Let’s take a look at what it takes to get your summer lawn that fresh spring look back again. Cast your mind back to March, that’s when your lawn will have actively started to grow again. But later in the year when we finally decide to get out our barbecues and set up a party in the back garden, the greenery you saw looking so vibrant and fresh may well have started to take a beating. Add in a little neglect here and there

breezemagazine 34

and things start to look a bit yellow and strained! By summer the ground will have dried out quite well and you should be cutting your lawn once a week with the blades set at about 1cm - if your grass is long enough. Around August some like people like to add a summer weed and feed which is perfectly acceptable but if you have already done so in the spring then just adding a liquid feed will keep your lawn looking nice and vibrant. Another useful tip during extended spells of hot dry weather is to use your grass cuttings as a shade for the lawn and simply sprinkle them evenly over the surface which will help to and lock in the remaining moisture in the ground. All of this adds up to a haven for hungry birds who will be busy getting all the food they can before colder months inevitably come. So why not put up a bird box or two around the garden? Whilst there is no bad time to put a bird box up the height of summer is certainly a more comfortable time to do it than the depths of winter! Some of the earliest nesting birds may investigate your box prior to setting up their home early next spring. Other birds which nest later in the year may well use your box to avoid predators or even to shelter from some the harshest weather during the glum months of the winter. No matter when you put up bird houses, there are ways to make them more attractive to birds looking for a home. Choose a safe birdhouse design that has no perches (the birds don’t need these and it only helps a predator to climb up) and has the correct size hole for the species you may want to attract. Position it carefully - sheltered from inclement weather but not too far from food to help overworked parents. Clean the bird house after the nest is empty or at the end of the nesting season

gardening to keep it from harboring mice or parasites that can harm birds. Keeping nature close at hand is not only hugely beneficial to our wild friends but also benefit our wellbeing with the rewards of seeing the creatures you might not see on such a daily basis. Another way to attract wildlife is to build or install a pond. Ponds can be modest in size so don’t feel you have to dig out enough earth to start your own reservoir! Ready made moulds are available from many local suppliers and are reasonably priced. Simply remove enough earth to fit the mould snug at slightly above ground level and then use a choice of decorative stones or wood if you prefer, around the edge. Try to layer these so that some stones are in the edge of the water which gives more natural appearance. Make sure that you make the overall edge of the pond lining slightly higher than the surrounding earth - this prevents silting from being a problem. Use a de-chlorinator before planting any aquatic plants though - or wait for it to fill up naturally with rain water. Then get your aquatic plants in so that they use up the nutrients that algae may thrive on thus keeping your pond nice and clean the natural way. You can use heavy duty black sheeting if you prefer a more bespoke approach to your pond - these require more work on terms of laying them onto a soft undersurface so seek advice from the supplier when you purchase. General maintenance tasks should be carried out this month such as dead heading your spent annuals and cutting back those perennials all of which helps to keep your garden tidy as well as allowing the plants to grow healthily next year. Perhaps though, the most important thing to do in August is to enjoy your garden and all the hard work you put in earlier, hopefully with some friendly visitors from nature!

testimonial “I was invited to a meeting by Marion who thought I would be interested in learning a little more about ProArgi-9. The reason was because I’m Diabetic with high Cholesterol. I was put on statins but had a bad reaction they affected my muscles and made me feel tired all the time. I felt like a 90 year old. I was very impress with what I was told at the meeting and after having my artery age checked which was ten years older than my actual age I went home and immediately got on the internet to do a little bit of research. I was amazed aU what I found. Dr Joseph Prendergast has a few short videos explaining the benefits of the remarkable product. So I ordered my tub of ProArgi-9 and began taking it straight away. How can it Help YOU?!

It is common for most of us to bury our heads in the sand, hoping that good health will continue at least on a par with the present time. And yet, there is still that little niggle that all may not be well. If you would like to have a peep at what’s going on inside your arteries, now you can! This non-invasive procedure measures your arterial age set against chronological age. Most of us have the need to help ourselves and although we can not actually see the bad cholesterol that is creating plaque, there is a likelihood that it has already begun building up inside your arteries. This naturally impedes the work of good cholesterol that naturally lies within us and has a useful job to do. High blood pressure, for instance, may mean that arteries are struggling to carry vital oxygenated blood through a narrowed stricture to our brains, arteries, cells and internal organs. Your diet, level of activity and lifestyle may affect how efficiently your heart pumps precious oxygen-rich blood around your body.

How much will it cost?

This revolutionary new cardiovascular scanner will measure the ‘stiffness’ of your arteries and you will know, within 30 minutes what your arterial age is. The cost of the scan is ÂŁ48 and the recommended treatment (if necessary) works out at around ÂŁ1 per day and has a proven track record.

Does it work? Yes it does! How do you know?

“I too have high blood pressure and following a personal trial, the results were stunning. Prior to starting the treatment my Central Aortic 4ZTUPMJD Pressure was reduced by nineteen points in two months from 133 to 114. I am continuing with the treatment. Look after your body top to toe and it will look after you! It really does make sense!

Whereas most of us usually experienced speeds around 70mph as we travel in our cars on the motorways, a bobsleigh team of which Dave is part, can reach up to around 95mph! Bear this in mind as you conjure up an image of how relatively open a bobsleigh is compared to an average car. It takes a brave man or woman to shoot off down an icy run, fully intent on reaching such speeds in pursuit of an Olympic gold but Dave is no stranger to this highly charged sport at competitive level having already competed in a World Championships and in World Cup Races. In the corners bobsleighers pull an incredible 6g - not far off the 7 - 9g experienced by modern fighter pilots. Dave sits at the back helping both to ‘push off’ the bobsleigh at the beginning of the run and then to help keep it on track when all that g-force is trying to pull them off! He is only allowed to use his brake at the end of the run to help stop the bobsleigh otherwise the team would be disqualified so no subtle touches on the brake in this sport to get round a bend. Because of the strenuous nature of the sport and the ver present risk of injury through strain, Dave has to pay close attention too both strength and fitness training which have been specifically tailored towards this particular sport. This all costs money as sufficient time must be spent in training and with coaches to hone technique. Sadly, due to changes in the funding regime for some of the athletes involved in the Olympics men’s programme Dave has now been told he must find funding for the next four year cycle. This is a massive challenge as there are various costs associated with the steady build up of strength, agility, technique and the psychology of preparing to meet and compete against the best in the world. Dave is looking for support and sponsorship in two different forms: cash sponsorship, and service sponsorship. Cash sponsorship pays for everything from basic living costs to performance related items such as: • • • • •

Home: rent, food, utility bills Medical costs: physio, massages, osteo Coaches: strength & conditioning coach Travel costs: petrol, flights, hotels Equipment: trainers, spikes

The service sponsorship deals are related to companies giving Dave their time and services for free. For example: • Express Telephony sponsor his home broadband • NRG Fuel gives Dave free supplements • Big Ant Video document his career online via video In return for supporting Daves developing athletic career he offers businesses an alternative marketing strategy. This opens many doors to other sponsors giving them access to all the marketing material that Dave has and uses. Here are some of the details of just a few areas that future sponsors can utilise.: Bobsleigh has a growing following in all

forms of media. Globally, ninety two TV channels broadcast the sport with an audience of around 350 million. This is over a 10week period that mirrors the season’s duration. Alongside the TV coverage, Dave has developed a growing online presence with thousands following him via his website and on youtube, along with around forty Bobsleigh websites and blogs globally who stream all stories, videos, and pictures related to my athletic career. This gives access to advertise to tens of thousands of people globally. For further information about Dave Smith and how other companies are supporting him at present visit his website: davesmithbobsleigh.co.uk or email him directly at dave.fj.smith@bobteamgb.org Dave would really like to hear from anyone who can help him to help Team GB grab a gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics the start of that journey is right here!

Available to help out if and when is more than likely. Careful not to isolate yourself too much you seek the kind of support to help you up when the chips are down. TAURUS Any disappointments are dealt with quickly with a view of changing tactics. Seeing someone as they really are is quite an eye opener with a genuine lack of understanding of their behaviour. August becomes much busier than anticipated. However, you manage to get through the month with a positive and much clearer frame of mind. GEMINI With certain responsibilities around you make sure all is dealt best you can then turn your energies toward family matters which you feel have recently been neglected. Taking a day out and treating some one to something special is well appreciated. After making sure all the paperwork is up to date you are likely to sign on the dotted line.

Member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (MNCH) Telephone: 07845 405835 SCORPIO August brings one or two pleasant surprises you did not expect. Organised and ready to move on in life you plan accordingly. By taking a day out you please others and keep memories alive. Going on a spending spree cheers you up but not your bank account. Taking the bull by the horns you arrange to meet someone from the past. LIBRA Understanding you cant be in two places at one time you manage to prioritise and take it from there. With little said on your part you give the right signals at the right time for relationships to flourish. Any mess regarding alterations inside or outside the home brings untold pleasure when completed. You give support if and when needed. SAGITTARIUS Don’t be surprised if you make plans to travel, decorate your home and commit to family all at the same time. With much to think about prioritising becomes difficult but you manage as always to achieve your aims within the time you allow. Following your instincts you prove yourself right to someone when they appear to know best.

CAPRICORN Encouraged by positive results on your part you become more independent and look forward to helping out in some way. Any challenges coming your way are proved to be worth your while. Taking up new hobbies and interests help overcome any doubts about your self. With newfound confidence you help others and gain much respect. AQUARIUS Tension and pressure is dealt with your way making others feel more comfortable in the situation with no blame on their part. Disappointed in some ones actions, you make a promise to which you keep. Love and romance takes second place till certain issues have been dealt with. Looking forward to a break you secure a time and place. PISCES Misunderstandings with loved ones are soon sorted after finding the courage to say what is needed to clear the air. Exhaustion may hit mid-month when overloaded, but with a change of scenery you soon feel more yourself. Finding ways to compensate with something that has been lost becomes encouraging. Invitations come your way.

BEESTON INNER WHEEL MEMBERS TURN THEIR HAND TO BOOKSELLING. Members of the Beeston Club had a very enjoyable day at Beeston Carnival on July 9th manning a stall to sell books for their charity appeal. President Edwina Lonsdale was the power behind the idea and once she had suggested the idea the books just rolled in, and as anyone who saw the stall will know what a varied and numerous amount of stock they had - fiction, non fiction, children's, gardening, cookery, hard backs and hundreds of paperbacks, a bargain for every one. The money taken will go towards their annual charity collection and the speaker they have at their next meeting is from the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre the chosen charity of the President. This was the start of the Inner Wheel year and all members are looking forward to another year of fun and friendship.

at a glance

Established in October 2009, Classy Cupcakes has built up an impressive portfolio of products and enjoys regularly delighting local customers. Owner Karen Attwood says: "We have provided more than 18,000 high quality, delicious, beautiful and quirky cupcakes to make everyone smile! We specialise in highly bespoke cakes and cater for all events - including birthdays, weddings, graduations and corporate events". Last year, Karen studied pastry chef skills part time at college and alongside the standard range of delicious and bespoke cakes, has developed a stunning new range of cupcakes called 'Posh Patisserie'. Classy Cupcakes operates out of a family kitchen which has been awarded the highest possible hygiene rating by Broxtowe Council. This keeps overheads to a minimum and allows an offer which is excellent value for money. You can keep in touch with all the cupcake adventures by reading the weekly blog that Karen has been writing for the last year called 'Living the Cupcake Dream', which muses about running a business, family matters, the joy of baking and the appeal of cupcakes. Classy Cupcakes would be delighted to help enhance your special occasion, or provide a gift with a difference. Please contact them for further information.
