‘Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest, Nottingham’. Around the world these words are synonymous and on the lips of people when one of them is mentioned. We offer you the chance to find out even more by joining The Robin Hood Town Tour... ‘Who was Robin Hood?’ is usually the first question people ask. Whilst this is a fascinating conundrum, it really is the preserve of scholars and writers who hunt through historical records and fit the facts they find to the medieval candidate they are basing the latest book on. Some pieces of evidence will fit but a fair amount of conjecture will be used to fill in the blanks. Such things will always be a matter of debate. These investigations get bogged down in detail and guesswork and the trail usually disappears into thin air. As a result, the magic inherent in the legend dissipates and also vanishes. There is a great irony that people are arguing about a person who never existed. Or did he? Perhaps the better question people to be asking is ‘What does Robin Hood mean in this day and age? After the closure of the early 90’s ‘Tales of Robin Hood’ in 2007, Nottingham has lacked a credible Robin Hood experience worthy of bearing such a world famous name. This may be changing with plans for a world class attraction in Sherwood Forest for 2015. There are also fantastic plans for Nottingham Castle which, if funding is secured, will be open in 2019. Whether these plans come to fruition remains to be seen. Let’s hope they do, as they would be a welcome addition to the renaissance that Nottingham has been going through over the last few decades. One attraction that is bucking the trend is the ‘Robin Hood Town Tour’. Now the Nottingham No.1 tourist attraction, it has been awarded the Trip Advisor ‘Certificate of Excellence’ 2013. This tour is

Ezekial Bone, (pictured above) as the twenty-first century Robin Hood, leads people on a trail not only around town visiting the key sites of interest, but also over the centuries. In pursuit of the ‘Hooded Man’, seekers follow the thread of truth through the rich tapestry of myth and history on a journey through English culture. This is where the legend really speaks to us and this is where the magic lies. The tales of Robin Hood speak to all people, of all ages, of all times. This is because, like all good stories, the legend contains home truths and those truths, especially in these days of celebrity culture, are more important and relevant than they ever have been.
STOP PRESS! STOP PRESS! STOP PRESS! STOP PRESS! In Aug 2013 a new ‘Family Friendly Friday’ version of the tour is being premièred. The original tour is suitable for older children covering subjects like the Renaissance and Reformation and also the architects and other movers and shakers of the City over the last few hundred years. In an effort to bring a fresh new approach to the legend to younger minds, the ‘Family Friendly Friday’ tours are aimed at a younger audience, concentrating more on the story of Robin Hood over the ages and also looks at bite size chunks of Nottingham culture with a dash of horrible history thrown in for good measure. A new look at the over fifties means changes to the way we see ourselves in our ‘golden years’. With a new emphasis on maintaining health and wellbeing into our older years and beyond, there is a growing market for the needs of a new and far more active generation of people who are fifty years and over. From support in checking out local tradesmen to sporting and leisure activities and a greater interest in self care, analysts widely recognise the sea change that has been occurring in the way we all see getting older. Indeed, getting ‘older’ is less seen as an obstacle and more viewed as an opportunity to get out there and try something new! Ones older years are also often a time that we may treat ourselves to those little luxuries that we went without whilst raising a family. Perhaps it is a home revamp and decoration, or an educational course you always promised yourself. Whatever the goal you have in mind here is a guide to help you consider what is possible in these golden years. It is also, of course, often a time for reflection and preparation so that no one is left with difficulties over important matters such as Wills and funeral arrangements. Above all, it’s about taking control over our lives and truly living to the fullest and happiest... Here’s to you in your ‘nifty fifties’.... HOLIDAY’S HERE, WHAT A RELIEF!
“You heard it before and I say it again ‘if your feet hurt it shows in your face’. Even in mid Summer, it’s not too early to start getting yourself in tip-top condition. Observe and listen to your body. First, give your feet a really close inspection,is there any pain anywhere? Corns? Hard skin? Untidy nails? If so, then it’s time to get on the case. Have your feet checked over for these problem areas, deal with them and then embark on an effective maintenance programme. Be really diligent with rasping rough areas, washing, drying thoroughly and creaming and within a month you will be delighted with the results. Follow this simple regime every night just as you are preparing for bed and you will be delighted by the improved appearance. Don’t delay, start today - you know it makes sense”. You don’t hear young people claiming they’re “young at heart”. They don’t need to. It’s a phrase we ’mature’ folk apply to ourselves and those older than us. Inside, we’re just as we were twenty and thirty years ago! Age is just an attitude of mind. Until we look in the mirror … Perhaps August is the month for us to act our age and get our affairs in order. Make that Will. Tell people where it’s stored. Leave some cash to a good cause or two. Sign some Powers of Attorney – one for finance and property and one for health and welfare. Start planning our funerals. Perhaps write a letter to that person we let down or fell out with many years ago. All over nothing, really. But do make sure you deal with a firm of local solicitors you can trust. Such as Rothera Dowson. Our experienced qualified lawyers will give you a free second opinion if you’re regretting engaging unregulated will-writers – some charge considerably more than solicitors and make claims that seem too good to be true. It will be so much easier to ‘encourage’ family and friends to do the same after we’ve done it ourselves. And before you can say Jack Robinson (remember him?) you’ll be back to living life as a bright young thing, younger at heart than ever before. For more information please contact Karen Hayward at Rothera Dowson solicitors on 0800 158 5316.

Take care of your funeral plans and make sure that you really are covered for all the costs involved... Funeral Pre-payment plans are becoming increasingly popular as people realise the benefits both for themselves and their loved ones. However, choosing the right plan provider is important. Many plans are now taken out by post or even sold door-to-door, which can lead to future difficulties. Before committing yourself, check that your funeral can be carried out by the funeral home of your choice – many plans sold by charities or other third party agents are linked to a particular funeral group, which may not be your preferred choice, and may not even have a funeral home in your area. Check also that the plan includes everything you need – many plans include only basic cremation fees, meaning that a Service in Church or burial of cremated remains would lead to additional charges. Finally, check that the administration fees are identifiable – some plans pay high commission levels to the plan seller, so only a proportion of your money is invested towards your funeral. With more than 20 years’ experience with Perfect Choice Funeral Plans, we at the Gillotts Funeral Service are always happy to give advice to anyone thinking of taking out a funeral plan, or concerned that an existing plan doesn’t fit their needs. challenging behaviour... Young preschoolers can often be a handful, and seeking and sharing advice from other Mums and Dads on dealing with a meltdown in the supermarket aisle or a stubborn refusal to go to bed, is a great way for many parents to pick up a few new tips to try, while letting off a little parental steam. But for some families it can feel as if their child’s behaviour is a bit more challenging. Having a child who has trouble concentrating or sitting still, who is always on the go, fidgeting and wriggling, who might not listen or talk too much, at home, at nursery, or when out and about, can make family life all the more difficult and exhausting. If this sounds familiar to you an exciting research project may offer just the support you need right now. Researchers at the University of Nottingham, in collaboration with the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS trust, are offering local families the chance to take part in free parenting programmes designed to help parents and over-active children. “The programmes are about arming parents with tried and tested techniques for tackling these difficult behaviours, and improving family life”, says Professor David Daley, Principal Investigator on the Comparison of Preschool Parenting Interventions (COPPI) Trial. “Families in Nottingham, Southampton, and Stoke have been taking part in the programmes over the past year and we have further programmes starting in September and in the New Year. By the end of the trial we hope to have supported around 100 local families with these valuable programmes”.

breezeappeal Stepping out for Nottinghamshire walk to boost funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK, can you help raise the awareness...
A fundraiser is challenging people to step out for a six-mile Big Walk in Nottinghamshire this summer to boost funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. The walk in Teversal on Sunday 11 August is the second to be organised by Ruth Hobbs, who was inspired to raise money for the UK’s leading dementia research charity after her mother, Dinah, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2011. Around 100 people of all ages pulled on their walking boots for last year’s event, helping to raise £4,600 for pioneering dementia research. Like last year, the walk will follow the route of The Lady Chatterley Trail, starting and finishing at Teversal Trails Visitors Centre. Teversal is thought to be the setting of DH Lawrence’s famous novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and walkers who take part on the day will have the chance to enjoy the beautiful rural landscape

that fired the author’s imagination. Ruth explained her motivation for organising the Nottinghamshire Big Walk for a second time: “It has now been over two years since Mum was diagnosed with dementia. Unfortunately she continues to deteriorate as time goes by from this awful disease. When Mum was first diagnosed we were shocked to learn how little money there is for research into Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. That’s when I decided to do something to help.” “I was thrilled so many people turned out to take part in my first six-mile sponsored walk and I hope people will join me again this year to raise funds for vital dementia research.” Parminder Summon, Community Fundraising Manager at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “We’re so grateful to Ruth for organising her second Nottinghamshire Big Walk for us. It promises to be a great day out, and we’d encourage everyone to put their best feet forward and sign up to take part. Every £20 raised on the day will fund an hour of vital research, taking us closer to new preventions and treatments. “Currently 820,000 people in the UK are living with dementia, including more than 9,000 people in Nottinghamshire alone, and we urgently need treatments which can fight the condition. We rely on people like Ruth to help fund our world-class research.” To sponsor walkers, visit uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/nottsbigwalk • Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading charity specialising in finding preventions, treatments and a cure for dementia. • We rely on donations to fund our vital dementia research. There are lots of benefits for those people participating in groups, with people telling us it helps them with access to tips and information, providing support when services aren’t available, and gives them a place to talk openly about things that might be difficult to talk about with family. Alex Wild, a member of the Nottingham Type 1 Diabetes group, says: “The group’s great because I know I’m not alone. It’s that moral support. Like when you’re trying to keep your blood sugars in range but no matter what you do they’re all over the place. It’s really frustrating, and it would be really easy to give up. But if someone says ‘I’ve been there - keep at it’ then it motivates you.” There are more than 250 self help groups in Nottinghamshire, and we can help you find the right one for you. We support ten groups in and around the Beeston area, which cover a range of conditions like aphasia, disabilities and mental health, and there are many more within easy reach in Nottingham and the conurbation.

For the second time in three years, Beeston resident, Charlotte Kemp is donating her long and lustrous locks to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which makes wigs for children living with cancer. She is also raising sponsorship for Shine - the charity which works with people living with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. Charlotte, an Assistant Scout Leader and former NCN student, saw a poster at her Scout headquarters advertising that Lee Stafford, celebrity hairstylist would be in town to promote the September'13 opening of the Stephenson College Lee Stafford Hair Academy, on Maid Marian Way. Charlotte made contact with Georgina Hunter at Stephenson College to enquire whether Lee might help her. Lee was happy to oblige, and on Saturday 13 July, Charlotte took centre stage for Lee's final styling of the day. Lee cut off her long tresses and held them aloft like a warrior displaying a battle trophy before handing them over for careful wrapping and mailing.

breeze pro HAVE YOU GOT A HOT DOG? A COOKED CAT? A BOILED BUNNY? It’s HOT and because that is so rare in the U.K. our pets do not cope well. Nearly all of them are happier in cold weather than in the heat. This may seem like a small problem but actually heatstroke is a common reason for serious illness and death in our pets. At Churchcroft Vets, head vet George notes that he has recently seen dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs as emergencies suffering from severe heatstroke. Churchcroft are pushing a Heat Awareness campaign and are full of good ideas on how to make minor changes that can make a huge difference to your pet’s happiness and save lives. To help educate everyone about the dangers and provide solutions Churchcroft are offering free “Help! It’s Hot” Health checks during August. To assess the risk of heat stress in your pet consider the following questions: • Is your pet overweight? • Does your pet have a long coat? • Is your pet from a short nosed breed (e.g. pug, bulldog)? • Does your pet have a cough or wheeze? • Does your pet have heart disease? If any one of these is a yes your pet is at significant risk. If two or more of these are a yes then your pet is at severe risk and you should seek advice immediately as to how to reduce the risk. George comments “Many people put a fan on to help their pets in the heat but this is not effective because of the furry coats that our pets have. Pet owners need to be aware of the dangers and have better strategies for helping their furry friends cool down”. In addition to the free checks, Churchcroft have an information board on display and leaflets available free with suggestions of effective ways to reduce the problem of heat stress in our pets. Why not take this opportunity to get a free health check and great advice on how to look after your pet? Call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and book in now.

breezegardening The summer is finally here and we should, by now, be starting to enjoy the warmer and gentler days of our sun kissed isle. Whilst you should have been making the most of enjoying your garden in July we should now also keep on top of things so that we can continue to benefit from the many rewards of our previous efforts. August is a holiday month for many of us and whilst away from your plants they still may need some attention so if you have a neighbour or friend who can give your plants a watering in hot weather this will keep them happy. Combine this with wood chippings or peat spread around the plant roots which can then be soaked with water to help prevent too much moisture evaporating during a hot summer day. Greenhouse plants must have regular attention. Tomatoes especially must be watered on a regular basis, as irregular watering will cause the fruit to split. Now is also the time to pinch out the centre shoot of any tomato plants so they
breezemagazine 34
can concentrate their growing energy on filling out the existing tomatoes, rather than producing more growth and more flowers. Bedding plants should be in full glory at the moment and to maintain their florid display they must be fed with a liquid feed. Always read the directions as to application because overfeeding can encourage too much leaf growth, rather than flowers. Hanging baskets and tubs need a weekly feed as the feed originally in the compost will now be exhausted and being confined to a container the plant is unable too send out roots to gather nutrients from the surrounding area. Always remove any dead flowers on your bedding plants and other decorative plants, if they are left to go to seed the plants will stop flower production before the summer is over, depriving you of any chance of the extended riot of colour we have been seeking in our gardening journey of knowledge. Was spring so very long ago? Strange as it may seem, daffodils and other spring bulbs
are best planted this month! Give the ground you are planting them in a good deep digging and try to mix some form of food into the soil - a good general fertiliser will give you flowers and much welcome colour next spring. Winter flowering pansies can be sown in the greenhouse, but do not keep the young plants inside any longer than is absolutely necessary or they will develop long lush growth in the summer heat. Get them outside and growing once they get established. Keep on learning with us and really get into this lovely hobby of ours - enjoy!

450 members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire gathered in Nottingham’s Albert Hall on Sunday to build a ‘Ginormous Choir’ in a day.
Those taking part included members of Rainbows (aged 5-7), Brownies (7-10), Guides (10-14), Rangers and Senior Section (14-25) from all over the county, supported by adult volunteers from Girlguiding Nottinghamshire and a team from community arts organisation Music for Everyone. Amongst those singing were girls from 6th Beeston Rainbows in Beeston. ‘It was fantastic!' said Josie Lane, aged 6. ‘I really liked singing and learning the actions to 'I Wanna Be Like You' from The Jungle Book’. Her friend, Daisy Chapman, added ‘It was exciting to sing songs by One Direction - I enjoyed that best of all!'’. Steering the day was Angela Kay, Artistic Director of Music for Everyone, who helped the girls polish up a diverse programme ranging from pop songs, rock anthems and favourites from film and stage musicals to folk and world music. The morning was filled by group workshops and rehearsals, with the whole Ginormous Choir rehearsing together after lunch. The day culminated in a special concert for the participants’ families and friends. ‘All 450 girls worked really hard all day and I was amazed at the high standard shown in the final performance,’ says County Commissioner Kate Royse. ‘My thanks must go to all the helpers and, of course, to Angela and her team, for all their time, energy and enthusiasm in making the day such a Ginormous success!’ Girlguiding Nottinghamshire needs more adult volunteers, not only to make events like the Ginormous Choir possible but also to help run units for girls who are waiting to join. Enquiries about membership and volunteering are always welcome at county headquarters on 0115 987 7220 or via secretary@girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

SUMMER HOLIDAY BOREDOM BUSTERS Finishing off our What’s On Issue this month, why not try this - Entertain the kids this summer with FREE Sun Safe educational activities from charity Skcin – www.skcin.org Now the summer holidays are upon us we are all looking for fun and engaging ways to entertain the kids over the summer months. The ‘Sun Safe Summer’ children’s activity pack has been developed by national skin cancer charity ‘Skcin’ as part of the charity’s national primary school’s accreditation scheme Sun Safe Schools. Skin cancer is the UK’s most common and fastest rising cancer and is now one of the biggest cancer killers in 15-34 year olds. Surprisingly, more people die from the disease in the UK than in Australia. The good news is that skin cancer is almost entirely preventable! The importance of growing up with a knowledge of sun safety and understanding of the dangers of over-exposure to UV cannot be underestimated, so if you’re looking for some fun and engaging ideas to activate your child(ren) throughout the summer, we have 10 activities to entertain them whilst learning all about how to enjoy the sun safely. There are plenty of activities to choose from, with something for all ages and abilities to enjoy. From colouring, cutting, sticking and designing, to origami, planting, card games and even a great competition to win a bundle of Sun Safe goodies... let your little sunbeams shine and become Sun Safe Superstars this Summer!
