One of Nottingham’s ‘best kept secrets’, Bromley House Library is a bustling hive of activity with over 1,500 members and its bookcases stacked high with over 45,000 books.

best kept secret... Bromley House Library operates as an independent subscription library, a model that pre-dates the network of public libraries, and its history can be traced back to 1816 when Nottingham Subscription Library was formed by the movers and shakers in the city at that time. Originally founded on Carlton Street, in 1822 the Library moved to Angel Row, to take up residence in the splendid Georgian townhouse that is Bromley House, and this is where it has stayed ever since. Bromley House Library always welcomes new members. The reason that people join is as varied as the eclectic collection held on the shelves. Some join for the books, and in particular the fine collection of local history and travel guides. Others join to enjoy the garden, one of only two walled gardens left in the city, or to read the morning papers. Many join to use the Library as a place of sanctuary, or to work (Wi-Fi and a supply of freshly brewed coffee is always available). Whatever the reason, there is a sense that the subscription fee provides good value at an equivalent of only £2 per week at full price and covering the entire household. The fee-paying model is one of the reasons that the Library (a registered charity) is still around after over 200 years but the fees alone are not enough to ensure the upkeep of the Grade II* listed building. Through the considerable generosity of members, supporters and local trusts, the Library has been able to make some significant repairs over the years and recently opened a new wing, creating extra space for books and a designated room for lectures and events. The next phase of development will be to replace the roof to ensure that the building remains watertight and the important collections inside are protected. You can find out more about Bromley House Library by visiting the website at www.bromleyhouse.org. Tours of the Library run every Wednesday afternoon at 2.30pm (booking advised) and the Library and its various collections will be open to the public on Heritage Open Day, Saturday 9th September, from 10am – 4pm.

Oxfam Beeston 2017 is go go go!

The Oxjam Beeston journey - a success story for the whole community Since 2011 Beeston has built up the festival from nothing to a very successful community event of which the town is very proud. Over the years several hundred artists have performed, all for free, including local successes, chart topping St Raymond, The Voice finalist Lia White, as well as others who have gone on to play at Glastonbury Festival. Equally important to Oxjam Beeston is the generosity of residents, organisations and businesses in the local community eager to give their time, resources or skills to this worthwhile cause.

Operatic Oxjam, Saturday 14th October, 7pm Beeston Parish Church We are thrilled to add this new event to the Oxjam Beeston “portfolio”. The programme will include pieces by Mozart, Bizet, Verdi and Mendelssohn, performed by the Il Bel Quattro vocal quartet with the Beeston Oxjam Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Derek Williams and lead by Richard Laing. **************************************************************** Classical Oxjam, Saturday 11th November, 6.30pm Beeston Parish Church. With a loose interpretation of the term “classical”, previous Classical Oxjam evenings have featured Led Zeppelin pieces arranged for strings and harp, a Beach Boys song, as well as music by Bach, Mozart and so on. Each year we aim to bring you something different - last year it was Indian classical on sarod and tabla. This year we hope to feature an innovative ensemble performing a mixture of jazz and world music, as well as piano, strings and mixed ensembles playing a varied programme of music to appeal to all.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE We have a programme of events to suit a wide range of musical tastes. “The Takeover” Saturday 14th October - 12 hours of music from more than 80 acts in bars, cafes and other venues throughout Beeston town centre. As well as bands and solo artists performing an eclectic mix of live music, from indie to Americana, folk to DJ, acoustic to rock, local choir leader Simon Thompson will organise an afternoon of choir performances in the wonderful surroundings of Beeston Methodist Church, Chilwell High Road.

*************************************************************************** Oxjam Ceilidh, Friday 24th November, 7.30pm Royal British Legion Once again Beeston will be jigging, reeling, shimmying and do-si-do-ing the night away to the foot stamping, toe tapping music of the Beeston Ceilidh Collective. This is a popular event for all ages., and with the humour and patience of Steve Benford to guide you through the dances, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know what to do; in fact it’s probably even more fun if you don’t! **************************************************************** Want to get involved? As always we need help to make the event better than ever! Does your band want to take part? Would you or your business like to be a sponsor? Could you be a volunteer at the Takeover?

What is Oxjam? Oxjam is a major fundraiser for Oxfam and also the UK’s largest music festival. Taking place in towns and cities across the UK, volunteers celebrate music in their local communities by organising their own events in aid of Oxfam. Beeston is firmly on the Oxjam map having raised over £60,000 all for Oxfam, and ranking in the top 3 Oxjam fundraisers for the last 3 years.

The local Oxjam team are excited to announce that for the seventh year running Beeston will be hosting the very popular and successful Oxjam Music Festival this autumn.

seeking volunteers The newly opened Canalside Heritage Centre is urgently seeking enthusiastic and friendly volunteers to join their passionate team. The Canalside Heritage Centre, a small local charity sharing history and stories of the canal opened just a few weeks ago. This is the perfect opportunity to join a small and personal team, and to make a huge impact. Just by helping out 3 hours a week on a project that makes you smile, will make a huge difference to how the charity grows and flourishes. There are roles to suit a huge variety of interests, most urgently sought are: Friendly people to meet and greet visitors and create a great welcome People to help in our tea room, clearing, serving and pot washing. Something a bit more challenging behind the scenes helping with our infrastructure, bookings systems, or volunteer database, computer skills needed. If you are creative and enjoy a little retail therapy, perhaps helping out in our shop is for you. The centre is also looking for volunteer walk leaders, garden volunteers, and education volunteers. All volunteers will receive an induction, training and ongoing support. People who enjoy working as part of a team and getting stuck in would fit in perfectly and would be able to make a real difference to the charity and the local community. Zoe Cockcroft, Arts Volunteer says: “I love being a part of the Canalside Heritage Centre team, I enjoy working with other volunteers on the arts team to plan events and to make sure that the Canalside Heritage Centre gets off to the best possible start. I can’t wait to come in the summer and go on a guided walk and have tea and cake.” Andrew Smith, Buildings Volunteer says: “Working with the team at the Canalside Heritage Centre is great fun; and I enjoy being able to use my skills to really benefit a local charity and a community project. As it is a small and friendly team I get the opportunity to be heavily involved, and I know that the work I do really makes a difference.” For more information visit us at Beeston Lock or online at www.canalsideheritagecentre.org.uk , or call 01159 221773 and ask for Jenny.

A recovery period has commenced enabling you to heal old wounds and start over again. An old love will slowly fade away allowing you to make new contacts and begin a more successful chapter with a partner who is far more suitable and sensitive to your needs.

Do the only sensible thing and cut your losses regarding a frustrating situation or risk losing even more time and money. Interesting developments in both your working and personal life will restore your faith in life once more as you realise that doors are beginning to open which will lead you to meeting new like minded people that will appreciate your friendship.

You may even embark on a brand new business venture that will pay handsomely once you get going. If single, be cautious about any newcomer as it’s important that you get to know something about them first before involving yourself in their world and problems, Devote time and attention to your loved ones and put home matters first every time. Remember, others must fit in with your timetable, not you with theirs. Avoid repeating past mistakes.

breezemagazine16

Even though it’s hard to imagine, your whole life is slowly changing direction because you are now starting to people and things from a totally different perspective, so much so that you are starting to wonder why you even tolerated them previously at all? As a result, you are beginning to enjoy your own company far more than putting up with those who have nothing remotely interesting to say or those who show little or no sensitivity towards others.

A number of recent incidents lately have woken you up from out of your beauty sleep and shook you rigid to the point where now you are more than aware of who your true friends are and which people have earned your trust and respect. If there is one thing you cannot abide, it’s being talked about and discussed behind your back and there has been plenty of that going on recently. Hangers on are being turned out big style because you are fed up with their attitude and mischief making. Instead, as a result of all these changes you are about to realise a number of dreams and ambitions coming true.

Although you enjoy socialising and meeting new people and can think of nothing more entertaining than throwing a dinner party for a group of newcomers, right now you are thinking twice because of your financial commitments and refusal to go into debt just for the sake of pleasing a few folk who always expect you to put your hand in your pocket first. Instead, you may decide to spend some quality time on the dating scene with a view to meeting someone totally different to the norm.

A night of passion may lead to either a full blown romance with a few twists and turns thrown in for good measure or just a simply goodbye at the end and thanks for the experience. Someone from your past may also turn up from out of the blue expecting to speak to you about the possibilities of starting the relationship over again.

You are on an exciting journey of self discovery and realising just how strong and resolute you are once you have made a decision. Not only that, you are becoming more and more aware of what certain people can be like when they are sober and not full of drink and false promises to the point where you are avoiding them like the plague so as not to become embroiled in their messed up lives. Because of previously difficult past experiences in your love life and the agony you have endured when things went wrong, you are now behaving more cautiously before jumping into situations blindly just because you don’t want to be on your own and think you have to be part of a couple in order to be happy. So much is going on in your world right now and there is little private time for you to just sit back and smell the coffee. You feel as though you are on some kind of merry go around because people are making such huge demands upon your time and energy. If you don’t call a halt to all this roller coasting it will be too late for you to put on the breaks because by that time the hangers on and those with an agenda will have had their pound of flesh.

There is someone you are either related to or friendly with who is either equally as strong a personality as you or even stronger, which is not going down well because you both like to be top boss and insist on being right even when you are evidently wrong. A number of challenging scenarios are going to take place soon and before you even consider entering into verbal combat, you must get your facts right otherwise you risk look a complete fool.

You may have not noticed it yet but someone is playing cat and mouse games with your heart. Its highly likely that you have given them all your power and so they are now conducting the foreplay of either a romance or business venture on their terms dictating their wants and dislikes knowing that you will dance to their tune. If single, its possible that you are feeling a little wild and excitable at all the attention you are receiving just recently and this is making you feel incredibly energised and in the mood for partying.

All My Sons If you had a secret that could tear your life and family apart, would you – could you – keep it hidden? All My Sons is a family drama not to be missed at the Nottingham Playhouse next month... Joe Keller is a successful businessman who lives with his wife Kate and son Chris in 1950s suburban America. Their only sadness, it seems, is the loss of their other son Larry, who went missing in World War II. After three years, Kate still clings to the hope that her son is alive. This fragile calm is ripped apart with the arrival of an unexpected visitor. Deep wounds are opened and the family have to confront the truth behind their comfortable lives. All My Sons is a family drama at its best: gripping and powerful, and written by one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th Century, Pulitzer Prize-winner Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman, The Crucible and A View from the Bridge). Exploring the dark side of the American Dream, it's a story that has never been more relevant to our modern world. happy retirement Nottingham and District Pre-Retirement are a charity based on the High Road in Beeston, this month they celebrated 50 years with the Lord Mayor of Nottingham and Volunteers, Guests and Speakers.... Nottingham and District Pre-Retirement help people with the transition from work into retirement. Many people sleep-walk into retirement with no preparation and spend more time planning a fortnight’s holiday. “We must have helped over 22,000 people during the last 50 years. A remarkable achievement we think. Many local companies in the area use our service and the feedback from the people attending say that this course is a must. With so many changes in legislation concerning New Pension Freedoms, Lump Sum Payments, Pension Deferral and the new Flat Rate State Pension, more people are turning to us to help them make those all important decisions. The next Pre-Retirement Course takes place at Beeston Town Hall on 18-20 September and for large companies, courses are held on site. Care for your flowers July is now passed but we still have much summer to come, as well as our recently warmer Septembers. We need to keep on top of things so that we can continue to benefit from the many rewards of our previous month’s efforts.

With August being a holiday month for many of us your plants will miss you whilst you are away - really! They still need some attention so if you have a neighbour or friend who can give your plants a watering whilst you are on your jollys this will keep them happy and ready to greet you on your return with lots more colour. If you can then combine the use of wood chippings or peat spread around the plant roots which can then be soaked with water to help prevent too much moisture evaporating during a hot summer day. This can really make the difference between coming back to withered plants or not. Greenhouse plants in particular must have regular attention with tomatoes being especially thirsty: water them on a regular (daily) basis, as irregular watering will cause the fruit to split. Now is also the time to pinch out the centre shoot of any tomato plants so they can concentrate their growing energy on filling out the existing tomatoes, rather than producing more growth and more flowers. Your bedding plants should be in full glory now and to maintain their intense colour and richness they must be fed with a liquid feed. Always read the directions as to application because overfeeding can encourage too much leaf growth, rather than the flowers that you are seeking. Hanging baskets and tubs need a weekly feed as the feed originally in the compost will now be exhausted and being confined to a container the plant is unable too send out roots to gather nutrients from the surrounding area. This is always an issue with any containerised plants so do be aware of this - feed is not expensive. Always remove any dead flowers on your bedding plants and other decorative plants, if they are left to go to seed the plants will stop flower production before the summer is over, depriving you of any chance of the extended riot of colour we have been seeking in our gardening journey of knowledge. Planning ahead: daffodils and other spring bulbs are best planted this month! Give the ground you are planting them in a good deep digging and try to mix some form of food into the soil - a good general fertiliser will give you flowers and much welcome colour next spring.

breezemagazine 24

Winter flowering pansies can be sown in the greenhouse, as these will need to get establish ready for late Autumn if growing from seed (and why not - it’s what our hobby is about). Don’t keep the young plants inside any longer than is absolutely necessary or they will develop long lush growth in the summer heat. get them outside and growing once they get established. If you have been trying your hand at runner beans this year then don’t forget that you need to give your them plenty of water at this time of year to keep them on track for a good harvest. (...continued) With a bit of forward thinking you can really give yourself a hand when you come to next year’s summer flower fun by taking photographs this year. Sounds a bit advanced? Well look at this way: can you really remember all the things you planted last summer or the one before that? For most people the answer is ‘probably not’. So take some images and even make a few notes about sun direction and where the wind tends to blow in your garden along with simple line sketches: these will help you in future. They don’t have to be elaborate but are just pieces of information you can come back to when we are ready - just file them away until the darker months come. Back to the present: towards the end of August you can start planning next year’s colour by sowing your hardy annuals. If you have wisely been planting your bulbs to flower right now then look after them as they can be rather tall and fragile: support dahlias, lilies and gladioli with stakes, metal supports and flower rings to ensure the weight of their beautiful flower doesn’t cause their stems to break. It's never too late to stake large plants such as dahlias to keep them looking good until the frosts. Do this before the autumn winds come sweeping in! Did you not get the flowers you wanted this August? Well, think ahead and take a look at planting some of these ready for next year. Remember: think ahead!

These plants really shine in August and they include crocosmias, kniphofias, phloxes, European asters, heleniums and buddlejas.

AUTUMN COLOUR PLANTS • Helenium 'Sahin’s Early Flowerer' Shimmering mahogany and orange daisies

• Aster x frikartii 'Monch' Large lavender-blue daisies with very long rays.

• Crocosmia 'Emberglow' A blaze of dark-red flowers in August.

• Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' Crisp yellow daisies with brown centres set against good green foliage

• Kniphofia 'Timothy' Subdued gentle pokers that smoulder like red-hot iron!

So, there we have plenty to keep you busy for now and as we always say, keep learning, and Enjoy!

BUILDING HEALTHY BONDS The Nottingham team, led by Head Coach Chelsea Martin, aim to offer a fun, stimulating and informative environment for dogs to learn household manners, whilst working to identify and prevent unwanted behaviours. Of the launch, Head Coach Chelsea Martin said, “I’m extremely excited about the opportunity we have to make a real difference to the lives of dogs and pet owners. By preventing problem behaviours in the dogs we see and training for the real-world we’re hopefully able to keep more dogs with their families.” “If we can help build a strong, healthy and happy bond between dogs and their owners, I would see that as a huge success. That’s what Dog’s Trust is ultimately about. In a year’s time, I would love to see us working with and helping 100 dogs and owners a week through that process.” By offering a variety of puppy, adult and rescue dog training classes, Dogs Trust hope to prevent problem behaviours & reduce the number of dogs given up for rehoming. To achieve this, the Nottinghamshire Dog School team will: • Utilise science-based, positive reinforcement training methods in all classes • Offer affordable seminars, workshops and other events to local dog owners • Provide CPD accredited events to veterinary staff in the area

WE ARE CURRENTLY RUNNING PUPPY AND ADULT CLASSES AT THE FOLLOWING VENUES: • Thurgarton Village Hall on Tuesday evenings • Beeston Community Centre on Thursday evenings • St Johns Parish Church and Hall, Long Eaton on Saturday afternoons • St Johns Church and Family Centre, Bulwell on Friday evenings

The times, they are a changing… But is your current pension plan living in the past? Some people’s shoes still fit: others need a new pair to help them walk faster and further. So it’s worth doing some ‘window shopping’. The same applies to your pension planning. Products that once were ideal for you may now be second best to new approaches approaches that can help shape the retirement you want! As they say - ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. You needn’t always follow the latest trend, especially if the cost outweighs the benefit. But switching an older pension into a current product may reap rewards at minimal cost. Even without moving to another provider, switching could offer benefits such as:

• Simpler, transparent, costs see what you’re paying. • Lower management charges higher net growth. • Easier access to valuations track your own investment. • Faster online fund switches respond to changing market conditions • Vastly improved death benefits • Pension freedom - the ground-breaking

a great, relaxing day out... There are lots of reasons to visit Strelley Hall: a lovely café with a picturesque garden; shops selling gifts, crafts, plants and garden items; and also a hairdressers. Not to mention the historic Strelley Hall building itself – with luxury fullyserviced office space to let (from a small office to a full suite), and the gorgeous newly-refurbished functions rooms to let for conferences, parties, wakes, and weddings. The Mulberry Tree Café in the Stables area now has a new wider range of delicious Bluebell Dairy ice creams, the rhubarb ripple and the liquorice flavours are going down a treat! Many people now visit regularly for the legendary homemade quiches – roast vegetable and goat’s cheese is a particular favourite, now served with a choice of freshlymade deli salads. If you have a special occasion coming up, or just fancy a treat, then book the Afternoon Teas – the Deluxe version starts with a refreshing glass of Apple and Elderflower fizz, followed by delicate crustless sandwiches with a piece of homemade quiche, together with a homemade scone, clotted cream and jam, and a selection of our homemade cakes. “Our cakes are made in our dedicated on-site bakery in the Hall itself, which doubles as the kitchen used to prepare buffets for functions held at the Hall”. During the week at Strelley Hall we have Pilates sessions on Monday mornings and a Mindfulness course on a Friday morning. Check out the Mulberry Tree Café facebook page or the website www.mulberrytreestrelley.co.uk to stay informed of the many attractions and events going off at Strelley Hall. Next up is an Open Air Theatre performance on Friday 18th August, “Tea with Oscar Wilde”; preceded by a delicious Mulberry Tree buffet supper. Tickets are £15 and available from the Café, Strelley Hall reception or telephone 0115 9061200.

David began working with glass in 1997 and his first piece (a stained glass tiffany style lamp) he still has today. After many years working with stained glass David bought a kiln and started fusing and slumping glass. If its high quality unusual, unique or something that makes you smile then we want to know about it”. After two successful years running his first shop in Chilwell, David has recently celebrated his first year in The Stables Courtyard at at Strelley Hall.
