warm return for mechanic Well-known local guy returns to Beeston! With such a love of cars from a young age, it was only natural that Julian was drawn to the motor industry and following his dream after leaving school, Julian trained as a mechanic and has run his own business since qualifying as a mechanic in 1992. In August 2009 Julian took his family and skills to America and spent a year working in Florida. During his time across the Atlantic, Julian worked exclusively on automatic gearboxes, this has extended his knowledge to comfortably work on both manual and automatic vehicles transmissions. Julian returned from Florida in 2011 and has run his successful, trusted business in Ruddington for the past six years with the help of his assistant, Sue who manages the office/reception. Due to the Village Motors tenancy agreement expiring, Julian grasped the fantastic opportunity to return his business to the Beeston area, 2a Ellis Grove, where his much loved family is, and where he started his career in the motor industry. Whilst Julian has a vast knowledge of all combustion powered four wheels, Julian’s passions’ include classic vehicles, both owning and restoring historic vehicles

during the little spare time he has. “Julian is an approachable, reliable, honest and kind man, has a big heart and will do his best to help you in any way he can! He takes the time to help and show you any faults your vehicle has. He has a great understanding of customer care and appreciates you may not always have knowledge of services or the level of repair required to keep your vehicle happy and healthy” explains Sue, of many years experience within the car repair & maintenance industry. Sue is a friendly and approachable member of staff, who has been with the Village Motors for the past four years. She is an integral part of the running of the business, who assists in administration and customer service. Many of their female customers have felt more at ease when identifying or booking their vehicle in for repair or diagnostic. But whatever the task, Julian always works tirelessly to resolve issues promptly and efficiently and also offers a diagnostics service, working to identify possible concerns quickly to fix the problem at an affordable £38.00 per hour cost to you.

“On Your Doorstep” Places to Go, People to Meet, Things to Do AGE UK INFORMATION MORNING TO FIND OUT WHAT IS AVAILABLE IN BROXTOWE
There's strong evidence that people who are active have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, depression and dementia. NHS Choices suggests many adults aged 65 and over spend, on average, 10 hours or more each day sitting or lying down, making them the most sedentary age group. As you get older, it therefore becomes even more important to remain physically and mentally active to help you stay pain-free, reduce your risk of mental illness, and maintain your independence. When you lose a partner or close friend or have a long-term health condition it is easy to suddenly find you have lost the confidence to go out and may find it hard to enjoy socialising. Retirement can often leave you feeling you are missing the challenges and social contact work gave you. So where do you start? Why not drop in to our FREE Age UK Notts information morning at Beeston Library, Foster Avenue, on Monday 22nd August from 10.30am to midday. We’ll have several local organisations and information on a range of things to do locally including chair based exercise (with taster session), lunch clubs, bowls, coffee mornings, craft groups, dancing, day trips, games, Tai Chi, accessible sports, quiz groups and many more activities to get you inspired. Refreshments provided. So start thinking about the things you always said you wanted to do, or that hobby that you abandoned because you didn’t have time and come along to see us; we will do our best to help you find where to start. Director Chris Teasdale, Luke Grainger (Assistant Director), David Hails (Musical Director) and Jenny Scott (Choreography) have put together a strong cast who have taken on the roles to tell this epic tale of Jesus's (Paddy McCrystal) last 7days of life, through the eyes of Judas (Sam Barson). Mary Magdelene (Vivienne Tay) battles with her feelings for Jesus throughout the story. The ensemble are led by Laura Ellis (Simon) and Connah Porter (Peter), giving a strong mob like atmosphere. The darker sides of the power struggle of Jeruselem are portrayed by Meng Khaw (Caiaphas), Herod (John Gill), with the final punishment given by Jason Wrightam (Pilate). This is the second time the Nottingham Arts Theatre has had this musical performed on its stage, the first back in 2003. The show is fast paced, emotional and also has a hint of humour. Dog owners, are you lungworm aware? Following the recent death of a dog in Nottingham caused by lungworm infestation, Churchcroft Vets are continuing their push to make sure all dog owners are well informed about this serious problem. Lungworm has been spreading across the U.K. for many years now and there have been two cases seen at Churchcroft Vets in Chilwell. Fortunately both these cases were quickly diagnosed an successfully treated. However, some cases can develop overwhelming disease very rapidly and die before they can be treated. Unlike other worms, the most common dog wormers are NOT effective in preventing lungworm but there are some flea controls and wormers which are effective when used frequently. It is advisable for all dogs to have some protection. Churchcroft head vet George says “Lungworm disease in dogs can present in a whole variety of ways. Sometimes dogs cough or sometimes they bleed because the lungworm causes clotting failure. Treating is complicated and prevention is definitely the way forward. Staffies and Staffie crossbreeds are at particularly high risk. CHURCHCROFT VETS OFFER FREE PARASITE CONSULTATIONS TO ALL DOG OWNERS AND DURING JULY AND AUGUST ALSO HAVE 10% OFF ALL LUNGWORM TREATMENTS. Call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and make sure your dog is protected.

Colour After Summer
With August comes full bloom of your bedding plants and many flowering shrubs. Plan ahead now if you want to keep the colour going into Autumn... A bold block of cerise pink nerine flowers make a breathtaking sight on a bright autumn morning and Nerines give you just that - perfect for a dramatic end to the season! These colourful bulbs save their display until September or even later, while the long strap-like foliage remains intact over winter, unscathed by cold weather. Nerine Lilies are surprisingly easy to establish and Nerine bowdenii is perfectly hardy in the UK, despite its South African origins.
Planting Nerines Plant your bulbs as soon as you get them, plant each one into a 9cm pot filled with a mixture of 50% multipurpose compost and
breezemagazine 24
50% loam based potting compost, such as John Innes No 2. When planting, make sure that the roots are spread out and only the bottom half of the bulbs are below the compost level. The top half of the bulb has to remain above it. If planting in the ground then wait until the roots fill the pot before planting out into the garden, at the same level. They do best in a well-drained site with full sun and love it at the base of a sunny, southfacing wall. A good summer baking encourages plenty of flowers in autumn. Water them in well. Nerines do well in pots permanently - as well as in the ground so, use the same compost mix as above, planting so the tip of the bulbs show above the compost surface. Bring them inside when in flower for brilliant and long-lasting houseplants, moving them outside again when they’ve gone over. Mulch clumps when they’ve finished flowering for winter protection. If you think the flowers are getting less, year on year, feed during the summer with a potash-rich fertiliser. Nerines don’t like being disturbed, so once planted try to avoid moving them. After planting, the bulbs should grow some strap shaped leaves until mid summer, and then they will die down. If we have a wet summer they can remain green. In September/October flower spikes will
emerge and bloom without the foliage. Avoid planting next to daffodils. If there are no blooms in the first autumn, don’t worry. Nerines are notoriously temperamental when they have been moved/replanted. They will flower the following year. After many years the bulbs will become congested. Do not divide them as they flower much better when grown like this.
Plant Dahlias The striking blooms of these tuberous plants start to open in summer, but are at their best from August to September, bridging gaps in borders as other perennials begin to tire. Dahlias flower in an extraordinary range of rich colours making them useful for creating an exotic effect in hot-coloured borders. The best time to plant them though is in March but start thinking now where your garden tends to go a bit dead during Autumn - and be ready with your plan! (continues...)

breezegardening Planning for a full year of flowering Before you start planting, you need to create a garden plan by using graph paper and drawing a plan of your garden site to scale (this is not technical: just use one square or four squares to represent one metre in your garden). Plot every feature you find on your site, both natural and those already in place. Grab the measuring tape to get approximate measurements. It’s also now helpful to note areas of sun and shade along with where the wind tends to blow - especially if you get any ‘tunnel’ type effects (wind can really blight plant growth). Use general terms to express which type of plant might go where e.g sun-loving perennials etc. This way you keep the plan easier to execute later and not get bogged down. Look at the garden as you would if planning a room with walls, floor, ‘ceiling’ - in this case you may wish to install a tarp or a large parasol type umbrella. Consider any furniture locations - after all you will want to be sitting comfy when you have your garden as you like it! A three-season garden requires three essential ingredients:
JOBS TO KEEP AN EYE ON THIS MONTH
The Greenhouse Greenhouse plants must have regular attention. Tomatoes especially must be watered on a regular basis, as irregular watering will cause the fruit to split. Now is also the time to pinch out the centre shoot of any tomato plants so they can concentrate their growing energy on filling out the existing tomatoes, rather than producing more growth and more flowers. Bedding Plants The bedding plants you set out with in early summer with just buds & a few small flowers on them should be in full glory now but to maintain the florid display they must be fed with a liquid feed. Do not overfeed though. Dead Heading Always remove any dead flowers on your bedding plants and other • Perennials that bloom copiously year after year decorative plants, if they are left to go • Small shrubs with colour-saturated foliage to seed the plants will stop flower all season long production before the summer is over. • Plants that do not spread aggressively Winter flowering pansies Heuchera, Black-eyes Susan, Salvia & Asters all have can be sown in the greenhouse, but do not these characteristics. Along with your annually bought keep the young plants inside any longer than bedding plants these can move your garden forwards and is absolutely necessary or they will develop long help you get nearly year round colour rather than lush growth in the summer heat. get them outside everything going dead at the end of summer. Look and growing once they get established. forward to an even better garden and as always - Enjoy!
