Call 0115 967 8663 Meet Liz Coyle. "My background is working in cosmetic clinics for the last ten years on reception. I love being front line and front of house as I enjoy meeting and chatting with different people. I used to be a customer at Beyond Bronze for many years as I live in Chilwell, and I was an especially big user of the collagen machine. I also used to come for the Xen-Tan spray tans, even though I could get free spray tans at my old work, I much preferred the olive tones of Xen-Tan and was happy to pay to get the perfect colour. Whilst thinking of working for myself or setting up a small clinic I had heard that Beyond Bronze was for sale so I jumped at the chance to buy it. I am so happy with my decision as its a delight to run with lovely customers and situated in a great area. There is excellent free parking for customers, so its a nohassle stop for people, with no meters ticking away! We have three vertical sun showers, a leg tanner, a collagen red light therapy bed and we offer Xen-Tan spray tans. We also offer eyelash extensions, teeth whitening and botox clinics. I know from working in the clinics just how much people do like to feel good and I hope and aim to give people at Beyond Bronze that same feeling." Helen Bowen is a successful mobile hairdresser who has become an independent distributor for Forever Living Products, one of the world leaders in aloe vera and bee hive based products. She became a distributor for the company after being introduced to it by one of her hairdressing clients. Her client noticed that the back of Helen's hands were sore, and irritated as she suffers from dry skin. Her client gave her a sample of Forever’s Propolis Crème and within two days her hands had completely cleared up. She has tried a number of high street products and nothing has worked for her until now. Helen became a distributor because she could see the product range being able to help people maintain good health. At the time Helen wasn’t aware that you can drink aloe vera and what benefits this great natural drink can bring and so she uses Aloe Vera in this liquid form every day and really feels the benefits. Everything is made from naturally produced products meaning they can be used by anyone of any age and used on animals but not tested on animals, which was very important to Helen. The range includes aloe vera drinks, beehive products, skincare, personal care, make up, supplements and weight management. Helen has been following the weight management programme, has lost one stone in the first three weeks and is still going. “I feel fantastic, never feel hungry and my energy levels have soared.” she says. For more information about these amazing health and beauty products book your free place at an aloe vera coffee morning on Saturday 27th October 2012 or Saturday 3rd November 2012. SAFETY FOR KIDS ON LINE Brooks Computer Solutions recommends that parents take the time to go through the ‘be Smart - be Cool’ rules with their children. Safe - Keep safe by being careful not to give out personal information when you’re chatting or posting online. Personal information includes your email address, phone number and password. Meeting - Meeting someone you have only been in touch with online can be dangerous. Only do so with your parents’ or carers’ permission and even then only when they can be present. Remember online friends are still strangers even if you have been talking to them for a long time. Accepting - Accepting emails, IM messages, or opening files, pictures or texts from people you don’t know or trust can lead to problems – they may contain viruses or nasty messages! Reliable - Someone online might lie about who they are and information on the Internet may not be true. Always check information with other websites, books or someone who knows. If you like chatting online it’s best to only chat to your real world friends and family Tell - Tell your parent, carer or a trusted adult if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, or if you or someone you know is being bullied online. Laura from BCS says ‘Viruses can infect your computer without obvious signs. Once activated a virus can access information and devices on your laptop or desktop including personal photos and it’s Webcam. The good news is that up-to-date virus software should block this type of virus. If you continue to be concerned you could simply deactivate the Webcam internally or more simply put tape across it.’ Additional Details can for found at www.kidsmart.org.uk and for tips keeping your computer virus free www.bcs.uk.net/top_pc_tips.html or call 0115 9468333 to book a professional computer service from Brooks Computer Solutions. breezemagazine 8

Giving to charity by will – everyone’s a winner A Beeston law firm has welcomed new tax laws cutting the rate of Inheritance Tax payable from 40% to 36% whenever a Will contains fairly modest gifts in favour of charities. Karen Hayward, a Wills and Probate specialist at Rothera Dowson, says that the tax rate on the first £325,000 left on death is normally nil. Anything over this initial tax-free amount gets taxed at 40%. Widows and widowers can qualify for a double nil rate band of £650,000. Gifts to churches, charities and certain other worthy causes have always reduced the Inheritance Tax payable on the rest of the estate. Now since April 2012, if you leave at least 10% of the excess above your NRB to charity, the taxman will further reduce your IHT bill by charging only 36% on the balance instead of 40%. A double benefit. Note that you don’t have to leave a full 10% of your whole estate to qualify for the reduced rate – it’s

breezemagazine 10

just 10% of the excess, which can be quite a modest proportion of the whole. As Karen says, none of us knows when we’ll die or what we’ll leave, so it’s best to draft this sort of Will using a particular set of wording. “If you want to leave something to your favourite charity and also help your family qualify for the new reduced tax rate, it’s worth getting professional help as the rules are complicated.” Strange but true What if the Will leaves something to charity, but not enough to pass the new 10% test? Karen explains: “The beneficiaries could think about topping up the charitable gifts by varying the Will within the two years after the death. They’ll not only benefit their own favourite charities at the expense of the taxman, but may even get a tax refund for doing so, and end up with even more than they started with.” Strange but true. So apart from the poor old taxman, everyone’s a winner! For more information and advice about making a Will, giving to charity and tax planning, please contact Karen Hayward at Rothera Dowson Solicitors on 0800 158 5316.

Have you planned for the future? The importance of making a Will If you haven’t already made a Will, have you ever considered how complicated it could be for your loved ones after your death if you don’t? If you have made a Will, is it still what you would want if you were to die? Ellis-Fermor and Negus solicitors in Long Eaton can advise you on preparing for the future, including writing a Will. Here are some points you may need to consider... • Would your partner be protected financially if something happened to you? • Would your children be protected financially if something happened to you? • Who would look after any children under the age of 18 should both you and your partner die? • If you’ve been married more than once, have you made proper provision for the children of the first marriage? • Do you want to protect your money in case your partner should remarry? • Do you want the Government to receive all your money? • Are you worried about Inheritance Tax? • What would happen if your partner were to be admitted to residential or Nursing care? • Who would look after your pet(s) and would they be properly provided for? • Do you want to leave money to other family members such as grandchildren or to a charity which you support? As well as making Wills, Ellis-Fermor & Negus also store clients’ Wills for free, review previous Wills that clients may have made (even if it was with another solicitor) and can help with other probate matters such as estate administration, Lasting Powers of Attorney and the provision of advice about Care Home Fees. If you would like to find out more about making a Will, or any of the matters mentioned above please contact Mrs Ellie Wreford or Mrs Sam Fryer at our Long Eaton office on 0115 972 5222.

Riverside Drama Group are to perform the legendary Calendar Girls as well as help boost funds for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research at the Duchess Theatre, Chatsworth Centre, West Gate, Long Eaton, from Wednesday, 31st October - Saturday, 3rd November (7.30pm). The story of the Calendar Girls has touched hearts all over the country, but only professional groups have been able to do the show until now. However, from this month the rights to amateur productions of the Calendar Girls stage show have been released for 18 months only, giving women up and down the country the chance to follow in the footsteps of the many actresses who have dared to bare all in the roles before. Calendar Girls was made famous by the 2003 movie, starring an ensemble cast headed by Julie Walters and Helen Mirren, and the story brings tears and laughter in equal measures. When Annie’s husband John dies of Leukaemia she and her best friend Chris decide to raise money for a new settee for the local hospital waiting room.

breezemagazine 30

They manage to persuade four fellow Women’s Institute members to pose nude for an ‘alternative’ calendar, with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence. News of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapely in the Yorkshire Dales. The Calendar is a success but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of new found fame. Based on a true story of 11 WI members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for Leukaemia Research Fund, Calendar Girls opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre in September 2008 and has since become the fastest selling play in British theatre history. The Riverside production will be directed by Liz Turner. Annie will be played by Lizzie O’Hara, Chris by Mina Machin and Cora by Donna Chinn. Charlotte Lloyd takes the part of Ruth with Clare Toska as Celia and Celia Billau as Jessie. Louisa Hatton makes her Riverside debut as Marie as does Carrie Churchill in the role of Elaine. Brenda will be played by Moya Magee. Of the male roles, John will be played by Dan Bates, Rod by John Lomas, Lawrence by Conor Daly and Liam by Gary Peake. Riverside have also produced their own version of the saucy Calendar Girls calendar, featuring the cast of the show, which will be available during the run and the price will include a donation to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

The company will also be selling other Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research merchandise from a stall at the theatre. This production will bring to an end a memorable year for Riverside whose brilliant version of The Pocket Dream saw them invited by the Royal Shakespeare Company to perform the show in the RSC Open Stages regional finals in Manchester and, ultimately, at the legendary Swan Theatre in Stratfordupon-Avon. Tickets for Calendar Girls are priced £7 full and £5 concessions and are available via the group web site www.riversidedrama.com, from the Chatsworth Centre coffee mornings on Saturdays (10am-noon), or by calling 0115 9170327 or 0115 8750506. The group rehearse every Thursday night at Bramcote Church of England Primary School (7.30pm) and new members are always made welcome. Riverside offer the chance for people of all ages, abilities and experience (or lack of ) to try their hand at acting. But for those who have no wish to tread the boards, the group also offer a wealth of opportunities to become involved with all aspects of modern theatre from backstage to front of house. If you would like to become involved, simply turn up any Thursday at the Bramcote Church of England School or you can e-mail contact@riversidedrama.com or telephone the above numbers.

GETTING A HELPING HAND. Leading local psychotherapist, Martin J Smith PhD highlights the benefits and importance of getting help for stress and related issues and difficulties. Taking back control of our lives can be very difficult if we are trying to do it alone. The task can be far easier if we are willing to allow others to help. Family and friends can assist, but more specialist assistance can turn things around faster than people first realise. Martin specialises in resourced based, solution focused therapy, which aims to help people look to the future and work quickly on feeling better and moving on with their lives by utilising their strengths and resources with some help and guidance. If people injure muscles or joints they think nothing of going to the Physiotherapist to get help to aide recovery. Unfortunately we can suffer strains to our mind just as easily as to our bodies; the problem here is people are far more reluctant to seek help in mending their mind through the assistance of a psychotherapist. Martin has been qualified and in private practice since 2000 and firmly believes that, stress, anxiety, depression and other related issues should not rule peoples lives. He has worked with many clients’ to break the negative cycle that so often engulfs them and all aspects of their lives. Do not let the stress and strain of work, home or life in general, get you down, to see what he can do to help you or a family member, call him on 07 973 410 010 to make an appointment; Martin does appointments at times to suit you including evenings and weekends so call now and start to take control, you can also email on itctherapy@aol.com for more information.

breezegardening The Autumn now beckons and we start to fiddle with the settings on our central heating. But what about the animals that live in and around our garden? Let’s take a look at our garden foragers. As we live in the various parts of the cityscape rather than in the countryside it’s interesting to see how wildlife has adapted to our artificial environment. What constitutes an artificial environment as different to a natural one anyway? An Artificial ecosystem is one made by man to mimic a naturallyoccurring ecosystem - a delverate attempt to recreate that which is held to be good for biodiversity and life for animals of differing types and sizes - even the bacterial life that we don’t see. A natural ecosystem is occurs through biological laws and the chances that arise from these. In the wild predators catch prey, trees will try to crowd out other competing types of plant life and bacteria flourish invisibly and in many cases helping the larger stuff to function properly! Artificial ecosystems offer a different approach since they will have had thought and planning put into them. This mean that some of the dynamics involved in an entirely ‘wild’ scenario simply do not exist. This doesn’t make them ‘wrong’ as such but does introduce the element of care and responsibility upon us - the creators of artificial environments.

There is a great deal more control in artificial ecosystems. as the placement of plant life si more ordained, and the choice of which animals are allowed in,even the content of the soil can be changed (and think about the smaller animals that live in the soil itself - how they are affected by the very medium they need to exist). All these points are a good indicator of how much we simply take for granted as ‘plant and maintain’ our gardens. We have covered this subject in previous issues but it is always worth taking a look at your garden and asking yourself ‘what can I do to make my garden more friendly, more responsive to the needs of nature’? Why does it matter? Well, whilst globally speaking, bio-diversity is in decline, gardeners can really help in the fight to slow this as much as possible. This makes sense if you consider that a large part of natural decline is due to homes being built on land where nature was; place some of the elements back that were lost and we have a much improved prospect for life in all its diversity from the clearly visible and beautiful (birds, dragonflies, voles etc) down to the not so beautiful (at least to our eyes) such as worms, beetles, moths etc and even the invisible (but essential) micro bacteria that breaks down garden waste products and contributes to the food chain. Why not leave a few hanging fruits for the birds, hedgehogs and other animals for instance. (continues...)

breezegardening (continued from p34)... So how much of a difference can you make? This all depends on your location but even the smallest space can help some sort of natural life in some way - it is never a wasted effort! For a smaller garden, why not try this: • Why not build a ‘bee hotel’? You may have seen this in visitor attractions. They help attract and shelter Red Mason Bees. Unlike the more familiar bumblebee, mason bees are solitary. After hatching in spring, the female spends most of her life searching for hollow stems in which to lay her eggs and if you can provide something suitable, that is a welcome nest for her and a chance to flourish. How to build: Make a simple box structure from untreated timber who’s sides are about four inches wide (simply screw it together so each side is butted up to the next). Then get some larger diameter canes or bramble, hogweed, reed, bamboo for example Cut the stems into four inch lengths, discarding any bent or knobbly ones. Include some really big stems - using a fine saw to cut - even though they’re no use to the bees, they speed up the assembly stage, look attractive and help shelter lacewings and ladybirds over winter. Lay your frame on a tilted surface and start to pack it with your stems. The whole thing will only firm up and lock together as you put the final stems in. Where to locate it: Hang it on a sunny wall, sheltered from rain, and wait for the bees to investigate in spring. Female bees selects a stem and lay an egg inside with a store of pollen for the grub to eat when it hatches. She will then seal up the cell with a plug of mud, and start again. A stem can end up with several cells. The young bees won’t emerge until next year. The reason this is good for your garden and nature is that Mason bees are much more effective pollinators than bumble bees, so they’ll help pollinate your fruit and veg. They also offer a fantastic opportunity for children to watch and learn as they scurry and buzz to fill a nest you put together for them at virtually no cost to you. Let’s return to this subject as we wander through Winter and make it part of our grand scheme to not only add colour and beauty to our ‘little patch of paradise’ but to know that the beauty is not merely ‘skin deep’. So come on - pick up those few tools you need and get cracking on the first project! Enjoy your garden hobby!

Breeze catches up with her... “I was driving to work and it was advertised on Capital FM radio that help a capital child was raising money by walking the Great Wall of China so I immediately rang my partner and said I was going to do it. From the group that have volunteered to go, I didn’t know anyone and then several weeks ago my dad decided he would join me in raising money and walk the wall with me! We leave for China on March 16th 2013 and return on 26th March. Visit capitalfm.com/helpacapitalchild and Trek China event for details. Both myself and my dad have to raise £3,200 each for the charity In addition to this I am organising a fund raising evening at the Village Hotel in Chilwell on Friday 16th November. There will be music, buffet, raffle and an auction. I will hopefully have fantastic items such as a Forest and Notts County shirt signed shirts to auction and a virgin balloon flight and raffle prizes including family ice skating at Nottingham arena and meals out. Any donations or gifts to auction would be greatly appreciated. I'm still on the case for more goodies. Any help would be amazing from readers. Would you like to join Liz between the 16th–25th March 2013 for an unforgettable adventure trekking along the Great Wall of China for Help a Capital Child. Stretching 6000km in a snaking line across China, the Great Wall conjures up a sense of history which is difficult to grasp until you have had the opportunity to experience it. Trekking along the ancient wall, through woodland and terraced farmland, our adventure will follow the contours of the beautiful hills and mountains in remote areas north of Beijing. This trip of a lifetime will be made all the more memorable by the knowledge that every step will raise much-needed funds to improve the lives of teenagers and young people affected by cancer living in our local communities. Why trek the Great Wall of China for Help a Capital Child: Help a Capital Child is supporting Teenage Cancer Trust units across the UK, and the funds you raise will fund specialist hospital units and care for teenagers and young people with cancer. For six teenagers a day, life changes overnight when they are told they have cancer. The aim is to help make sure that cancer doesn’t stop these teenagers in their tracks and that they are given the best possible quality of life and chances of survival. FIREWORKS NIGHT - ADVICE AND DEMONSTRATION OF HOW TO HELP YOUR DOG OR CAT It’s coming up to Guy Fawkes Night and many of us will be looking forward to a colourful fireworks show. In fact, what used to be Fireworks Night is becoming more of a Fireworks Season, lasting for all of November and a few days either side. This is great news for those who love their fireworks but bad news for any pet which is terrified by the noise and the flashes. George and the team at Churchcroft Vets are trying to raise public awareness of all the measures that can be taken to help your pet cope through this tricky season. These days, there are many effective strategies and medications that have been developed which can make a major difference. For pets that are only slightly bothered by the bangs and crashes there are simple, safe and cheap medicines which can be used, the right one depending on the exact case in question. To discuss these you can call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and they will be very happy to help. For those pets who are more upset, rearranging the house and, sometimes, some more powerful medicine can work really well. However, in all cases, as always with pet behaviour, a key part of successfully improving matters involves training for the owners! To show everyone what to do to provide the ideal fireworks environment for dogs and cats, Churchcroft Vets are holding a free meeting to demonstrate the correct approach. They will set up an example of how to make a safe and calming refuge for your pet and George and the staff will be on hand to discuss individual cases and offer advice. If you know that your precious pet is unhappy during fireworks season, or if you’re not sure what signs to look for, why not go along on Saturday October 27th between 2 and 4 pm at Churchcroft Veterinary Centre to find out more? Churchcroft Vets are at 111 High Road, Chilwell, NG9 4AT opposite College House School. If you can’t make that time or you need more information, give Churchcroft a call on 0115 922 4855.

Telephone: 07845 405835 LIBRA [Sep 24th-Oct 22nd] Trying to get some balance in your life proves difficult especially when there is much to do with added pressure. Challenges are met head on and with you making a stand toward someone around you, mid month produces some good results. Getting rid of the old and bringing in the new provides a wealth of opportunities for future gains. SCORPIO [Oct23rd-Nov 22nd] Any sign of feeling down in the dumps passes after a day or so. Cheering yourself up you visit those you haven’t been in touch with recently. One journey of choice helps put life in perspective. Second week your jumping for joy when news comes in you had been waiting for. For the single meeting the right person is likely around the 15th. SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23rd-Dec 22nd] Love and romance dominates the first half of the month when after then its all systems goes with family first. News you kept to yourself is only shared when you’re ready to do so. Putting ideas forward for financial gain is considered with input from another. Having a change around with furniture or re-decorating keeps someone on their toes.

CAPRICORN [Dec 23rd-Jan 20th] You appear to be on a bit of a roller coaster. It seems nothing will put a stop to what you intend to accomplish. Support is given to your new and inventive ideas. With family and friends around celebrations get under way. News from afar reaches you with a visit not far away. Finances get a good overall with adjustments made to suit. AQUARIUS [Jan 21st-Feb 19th] Finding the balance in life may prove difficult until someone actually listens to what you have to say and issues resolved. Tired and exhausted you take a short break needed. With one person you give an ultimatum proving to them you mean business. Feeling more yourself as the month progresses you plan accordingly with you in mind PISCES [Feb 20th-Mar 20th] It seems one person has you running around in all directions until their lives are sorted once and for all. Arrangements made could well be cancelled putting a spanner in the works, which doesn’t go down well with partners. Checking all is in order with cars, bikes etc. ready for the season ahead puts someone’s mind at rest. Admirers around.

Performances will be from Wednesday 14th November to Saturday 17th November 2012, commencing at 7.30pm at Round Hill School, Foster Avenue, Beeston, NG9 1AE. Return of Russian Choir to St Leonard's Church

WEST HALLAM DRAMA GROUP NEWS

The Resurrection Choir of St Petersburg, who gave a stunning performance to a capacity audience last year, will return to give another concert in the church at 7.30pm on Tuesday 20th November 2012. Their programme will include Russian sacred music and folk songs. Tickets are available for £8 (£5 students) from the Parish Office (0115 928 9963) and Community Centre (0115 928 5778). Full information on the St. Leonard's website www.stleonardswollaton.org.uk

Next month sees our production of ‘Kindly Leave The Stage’ by John Chapman ‘hit the boards’ on 8th, 9th & 10th November, at Stanley Village Hall, Coronation Road, Stanley. Performances start at 7.30pm and there will be an interval raffle, licensed bar and light refreshments. The posters and programmes are ready, the plans for the set are nearing completion and the cast are ‘limbering up their memories’ for their lines - we hope! The play is very funny and poignant too, being a ‘play within a play’; with the portrayal of both seasoned actors and young hopefuls all vying for a bit of limelight, and inevitably arguments and jealousies come to the fore. The plot unfolds further when it becomes apparent that two of the actors in the ‘play’ are married but their marriage is in difficulties - and subsequently this affects their portrayal of the ‘play’! This is a well-written play which has many memorable lines - whether sarcastic, tragic or rib-ticklingly funny! To order your tickets, which are £6.50 each, please call 01159 305386 - If you get the answer phone, please leave your name & tel. no., saying you’d like tickets for the play and somebody will ring you back as soon as they can.

Lynn of Tristram’s Hairdressing would like to welcome you to their salon. Tristram’s have been trading in The Village Hotel and Leisure Club, Chilwell Retail Park, since the hotel first opened in 1995. Although they are off the High Street, they are still local, open to the general public and very accessible with free parking, and offer a very professional hair salon in luxurious surroundings to make their customers feel very special. The dedicated team there have worked extremely hard to build up a regular clientele of both ladies and gents with four fully qualified stylists and a wealth of experience in all aspects of hairdressing. As the Village is a wedding and full function venue Tristram’s specialise in wedding and party hair. Lynn has seen many brides come through the doors, creating many individual styles for that special day, and this expertise has been passed on to her team. Tristram's are a L'Oreal Professional appointed salon offering all current colours including INOA. “As we are in a health and leisure club, we offer a very upmarket experience but we don't reflect this in our pricing. Gents dry cuts are currently £10 and all ladies services are comparable with other local salons” says Lynn. You can visit their website at www.tristramshairdressing.co.uk and find them on Facebook where information and current offers can be found.
