BAND OF MERRY MEN Universal Pictures has teamed up with Nottingham to bring an exclusive exhibition of Robin Hood, from director Ridley Scott, to our area. The showpiece exhibition will be at Nottingham Castle and Sherwood Forest and will open to the public until the end of October. breezemagazine 4

T

he Nottingham Castle exhibition will feature the character costumes of Robin Hood, plus Lady Marion, Friar Tuck, Little John, King Richard I and Prince John. It will also feature other costumes, props, weaponry and behind-the-scenes artefacts from the movie. It will provide an amazing chance to see up close the original props, weaponry, set pieces and costumes from the film. Sherwood Forest will be displaying other memorabilia including a large wooden cart from the movie that you can sit in and watch behind-the-scenes footage on large screens. Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe reunites with his blockbuster Gladiator director, filmmaking legend Ridley Scott, for the epic action-adventure “Robin Hood.” Joining with Oscar®-winning producer Brian Grazer, Oscar®-winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland and Oscar®-winning actress Cate Blanchett, they tell the story of the legendary figure known by generations as “Robin Hood,” whose exploits have endured in popular mythology

and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and challenge the crown to alter the balance of power between the king and all of his subjects. And whether outlaw or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people. This official movie exhibition has been put together especially for Nottingham Castle and the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre by the film’s set designer, Sonja Klaus. The Sheriff of Nottingham, Cllr Leon Unczur said: “This is a really exciting time for the City. Not only Nottingham people, but visitors from across the world who come to pay homage to the legends of Robin Hood and his Merry Men will be able to join in the celebrations. With a helping hand from a major Hollywood film, the spotlight is shining brightly on Nottingham and we’ve got a unique opportunity to tell the world about the other great things that make Nottingham the place it is.” »

We meet up with Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance services and a local man raising funds to help...

T

he Air Ambulance is a rapid response emergency craft covering 3,000 square miles across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. Travelling at 154 mph it takes approximately nineteen minutes to travel from its base at RAF Waddington to the furthest point in either of the two counties. It is operational every day of the week all year round completing an average of three to four missions a day saving many lives across the region. The helicopter provides a fast, smooth, efficient journey to hospital, avoiding traffic jams and reaching accident sites which are often inaccessible to land ambulances. A high proportion of “call outs” are to road traffic accidents and they average at least five leisure activity incidents a month. Speed is essential in the battle to save life and limb. The patient can be transported to hospital within 7-12 minutes, well within the “Golden Hour” which gives the best possible chance of making a full recovery. There are always two paramedics on board who are trained to offer specialised trauma treatment Many residents of our counties live in isolated communities, often 45-60 minutes away by road ambulance from the nearest hospital and have benefited on many occasions from the speed of the helicopter. “We are one of only 18 Air Ambulance Charities in the country and financially we rely heavily on voluntary contributions with the balance of our income coming from the varied activities with which we are involved. To ensure that the air ambulance can continue flying across both counties saving many lives each year we need to raise £1.5m each year”. “Volunteers are especially valuable to the charity. We are always happy to speak to anyone who can give of their time to help us with our fundraising and this can be as little or as much as they want it to be”. For further information contact: Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, Unit 2, Chase Park, Daleside Road, Nottingham, NG2 4GT Tel: 0115 941 2255

‘In the 1970s Liz Luddy first discovered a dress agency in Newark, loved the idea of selling nearly-new clothes and accessories at genuinly affordable prices and wanted to develop the idea into a stylish, guilt-free and enjoyable fashion experience. In 1993 Liz and her husband Tom, coming from a design background, were able to create Renaissance’s impressive interior with its welcoming atmosphere where carefully selected fashions and accessories are presented using colour co-ordination and extensive displays. Mindful that customers often experience difficulty in finding what they want in dress agencies, there are separate areas for women’s fashion, men’s fashion and younger fashion, within which are sections for designer labels, occasions wear, ‘extra’ fashion and even maternity wear. Variety and the highest of standards are the watchwords for Renaissance. Items selected are displayed in the shop for just eight weeks, which means, of course, that stock is changing on a daily basis. With the onset of the recession, a record amount of sellers is resulting in the best stock ever and featuring all the favourite labels such as Paul Smith, Hobbs, Jaeger, Karen Millen, Whistles, Ted Baker, Fat Face, Topshop, Zara. Radley, Kurt Geiger and many many more, all new or nearly new and in pristine condition! Alderman White School & Language College celebrates success: The DCFS has recently confirmed that Alderman White School & Language College, part of the White Hills Federation of schools, has achieved one of the highest CVA scores in the county. This score measures the progress that students make from the time they start at the school to the time they leave. The high score of 1018 puts Alderman White among the top 5 secondary schools in Nottinghamshire. Helen Redford, Head of School at Alderman White comments that “as a small school, we feel we can offer our students a greater level of care and support. Being part of the White Hills Park Federation of schools, we are also in a position to offer students a wider range of subjects in Key-Stage 4 .The federation sixth-form, Bramcote College, also has one of the highest CVA in the Broxtowe area indicating that our sixth-form students make very good progress”. Alderman White is also playing a lead-role locally in the introduction of the new manufacturing diploma. Last year the school received an ‘outstanding’ from OFSTED for its languages specialism, extended school provision and work with the wider community. The school is one of a few schools in the county where all Key Stage 4 students learn a foreign language and are therefore well-equipped for a more global future. The community-learning programme ranges from Martial Arts classes for primary pupils to ICT courses for adult learners, Mandarin classes for adult-learners and Family Italian. Will my daughter cope in a huge school? Will she disappear in large classes? There is a real alternative. Some parents have never even considered private education; maybe it is time for you to have a look at a school which helps girls develop their individual strengths and abilities. “Hollygirt School takes girls of all abilities, not just high fliers. Girls are assessed before they join, so that their educational needs can be met, wherever they are in terms of their ability. In 2009, 92% of Hollygirt girls achieved 5 or more GCSE A* - C grades (including Maths and English), compared to 47% in Nottinghamshire. However, our girls are not statistics. They all make excellent progress and we are proud of their achievements at whatever level. It is the unique environment of a girls’ school with small classes, where everyone knows each other and teachers have the time to get the best out of each child that really works. Everyone is stretched and girls with difficulties achieve more than they thought possible”. Entry to Hollygirt can be at any time, not just the start of a school year. Most new girls join without knowing other pupils, but soon make friends in the warm and homely atmosphere. The quality of care was rated as outstanding in the school’s last inspection in 2008. Go along to their next open day on Thursday 13th May with sessions at 11am and 2pm. If you can’t make it, call them to call in for a chat and a look around. 100 NOT OUT Pioneering personalities from Nottinghamshire’s past, feature in ‘A Hundred Years Ago’, a new book which explores the earliest days of Girlguiding in the county.

W

ritten by local historian Rowena EdlinWhite, ‘A Hundred Years Ago’ adds another dimension to the activities currently underway in Nottinghamshire to celebrate the centenary of Girlguiding UK. ‘It would make a great memento for anyone connected with us during this special year,’ reflects Dee Miles, County Commissioner of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire. ‘The book shows what energy and drive these inspirational women must have had to establish Guiding in Nottinghamshire a century ago, a drive which is matched by the enthusiasm that so many girls and young women still have for Guiding today.’ Author Rowena – who confesses that, whilst she was certainly a Brownie in the 1950s, she never quite made it to Guides – was asked to write the book following her studies of Nottingham women of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. She admits she was not surprised at encountering so many familiar names during her research for the new book. ‘Local women like Lady Maud Rolleston, who was one of Nottingham’s first women magistrates and Guide Commissioner for South-West Notts from 1928, crop up in all sorts of contexts,’ Rowena explains. ‘They were obviously the real movers and shakers of their day!’ Other key characters highlighted in the book include Agnes Maude Andrews, Superintendent of the YWCA Institute in 1905 and leader of the first Guide Company to be formed in Nottingham, Lady Sibell Pierrepont, who was County Commissioner from 1916, and the Duchess of Portland

Winifred Cavendish-Bentinck, who became the first County president in 1916 and held the post until her death in 1954. Many of the early Guides and Guiders have families still in the area: Minnie Trease, for example, who led the 11th Nottingham All Saints unit for over 30 years from 1917 and who has a plaque in the local church commemorating her long service, has descendants who continue to run the family business - Weavers Wine & Spirit Merchants - in Nottingham today. The book looks at Guiding’s first 21 years in Nottinghamshire and Rowena’s researches have untangled some of the mystery surrounding the formation of the county’s very first Guide company. This was ‘almost certainly’ started at the YWCA Institute in Long Row in 1911, and early photographs, documents and newspaper cuttings show that the movement quickly flourished across the county. Anyone with more recollections or souvenirs of pre-war Guiding is invited to contact the archive office at Girlguiding Nottinghamshire headquarters in Carlton. ‘A Hundred Years Ago: The Beginnings of Girl Guiding in Nottinghamshire’ by Rowena Edlin-White is published by Smallprint for Girlguiding Nottinghamshire with assistance from the Jessie Spencer Trust. Copies (£5) are available from local booksellers, through www.nottinghambooks.co.uk or by contacting Girlguiding Nottinghamshire, 16-18 Burton Road, Carlton NG4 3DF Telephone 0115 987 7220 or e-mail secretary@girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk For details on Girlguiding opportunities within Nottinghamshire today, visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

From her late teens Kim has always struggled to control her weight. For many years she has tried every diet on the market, only to result in yo-yo dieting and ending up putting more weight than when she started. Realising that for her health’s sake she had to do something about it. Kim joined a local slimming club and set about on her journey that would change her life for ever in more ways than one. Not only did Kim start to lose weight but she decided to become a weight loss consultant. She took to this role like a duck to water and soon became very successful as a weight loss consultant. In 2009 Kim decided she wanted more than being a weight loss consultant, she wanted to learn more about food, nutrition and healthy eating, and further more to run her own healthy eating and weight loss business. Kim knows all to well about the practicalities of running her own business as she is already owns a successful mobile hairdressing business. She studied very hard on a diet and nutrition course to become a Nutrition Advisor, and in February 2010 all the hard work paid off as she became a fully qualified Nutrition Advisor. So with experience and qualifications in place Kim has started her new weight loss and healthy eating classes called ‘The Health Weigh’ which start on Tuesday April 13th at Chilwell Memorial Hall. There will be three classes every Tuesday 9.30-11am 12.30-2pm and 5.30-7pm Kim says “I am very excited about this new venture, I feel very passionate about helping people with weight problems, and with obesity hitting an all time high I feel that there is a lot of people out there that need my help. After all, I know how difficult it is to lose weight and to keep it off. Most people need motivation and a lot of support and they will certainly get that from me. I also remember how difficult it was to be able to afford slimming classes each week, especially in today’s financial climate so at £2.50 per week with no joining fee, I think everyone will agree its a very reasonable and affordable price. Why not join Kim at her class or telephone 07792 314 869 for more details

Phil started his working life at Plessey as an apprentice and qualified as an Electronics and Telecommunications engineer. He then moved into the IT industry, and has been working for the last twenty years for numerous small and large organisations including Nottinghamshire County Council, Volvo and Bombardier. He has also fully qualified as a Novell and Microsoft Engineer with numerous certifications. “I’ve always been regarded by my family and friends as a bit of a ‘Whizz Kid’ and I am always being asked to setup their TV’s, VCR’s, printers, computers, internet, in fact - pretty much anything with a plug on or batteries! So I decided, why not turn my skills and experience into a full-time business of my own”. Phil wishes to establish and grow a local, friendly and honest business, sharing his expertise with new customers at a fair and reasonable price. He believes it is important that his new business also tries to cater for the elderly and local student population and offers a generous 10% discount. “I want to help anybody having problems with any piece of technical equipment in their home. Typically, this could be a problem with their computer or they need help installing and setting up a new piece of electronic equipment they have recently purchased i.e. HD/TV, Wi-Fi, PVR, Freeview, Freesat, DVD, Blu-Ray, Sky, Virgin etc How often do you hear someone say that they hate so many messy wires everywhere and they can’t work out where they all go? Or they have read the instructions and are still totally confused. Listening to my customers needs, being patient and able to communicate with them at their level of technical understanding are my key strengths. It is important not to blind anybody with science and technical jargon”! If you would like the expertise of a ‘Whizz Kid’ or need some advice call Phil on 07595 263 878

HOROSCOPES

THE MONTH AHEAD

By ANNE HARBOUR Dip.Hyp. HPD. MNCH - Clinical Hypnotherapist HPD. Member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (MNCH) Telephone: 07845 405835 ARIES [21st March-20th April] With a busy month in front of you and a positive outlook on life in general, April produces some welcoming changes which most of you feel are long overdue. Putting thoughts and ideas into action, mid month becomes quite exciting, with a view of a more contented life in the future. You visit places dear, with many memories held tight. No longer do you make yourself available to those who take advantage. Instead you find the means to healing some area of your life, which has been neglected.

CANCER [22ND June-21st July]

LIBRA [22ND September-21st October]

CAPRICORN [22ND December-21st January]

One minute your on top of the world next you feel as if you have no energy. On realising the cause you quickly correct matters putting your newfound energy into helping others in a more controlled manner. With your confidence getting a boost you soon realise your potential and get things moving quickly into the direction of which you wish to go. Treating yourself to that something special gives you the incentive to make the most of long awaited opportunities. Finances get a boost end of the month.

Love in the air April becomes memorable for many. With lots to do and little time to achieve your goals you take the first part of the month one day at a time. After then you feel much more content that matters outside the home are dealt with correctly. Putting yourself in somebody else’s shoes saves the day when another can’t be bothered. Money owing is likely to be paid back sooner rather than later. Mislaying of important documents likely when occupied with friends or family for the evening.

Romantic moments and making up for lost time gives you that boost needed to revive what you thought had been lost. Taking life in your stride helps a person come to terms with saying goodbye to another. With an outlook on changing direction regarding work you make sure you would miss out on nothing should the changes take place sooner rather than later. Having more energy and the confidence to go ahead regarding certain ideas for the home you enjoy long enthusiastic discussions.

TAURUS [21ST April-21st May] After being put through the mill with emotions recently you take advice from a loved one putting the past behind you but making sure you miss out on nothing to which you are entitled. With plenty of places to visit and people to meet the month in front of you supplies you with some pleasant and positive opportunities to get into gear regarding unfinished business. Taking some time out for yourself assists in helping you get back to normal as well as looking forward to a more happy and relaxed month

LEO [22nd July-21st August] At some stage during April and after a busy week or so you are able to sit back and take stock of all that has been achieved. Listening to no one you go your own way in one respect taking on new and exciting challenges. Any decisions regarding the home are made with loved ones in mind bringing an end to one solution. Getting rid of the old and bringing in the new brings satisfaction all round. Family matters become important when a younger member of the family makes firm changes in their life.

GEMINI [22nd May-21st June] Solving one problem gets under way and by discovering the source has one or two people in fits of laughter. Romance and travelling go together and bring many a happy hour especially when diverted to another place at another time. Any unresolved issues are dealt with, easing unnecessary tension outside of the home. Having been hurt in the past you have no intention of a repeat performance therefore do not give in to temptation. Strong and enthusiastic you succeed where others have failed to deliver.

breezemagazine 30

VIRGO [22ND August-21st September] Accepting and letting go becomes the key to a happy outcome. Feeling more yourself and settled over small matters of concern to you, you adapt to a different approach with those who surround you, giving nothing away. Standing your ground and giving support to another goes down well with a person outside the home. Loved ones are full of pleasant surprises and are happy to go along with new and bright ideas concerning the home. A family get together becomes the topic of much conversation.

SCORPIO [22ND October-21st November] Facing up to certain situations and releasing any emotional ties helps you move on in a positive and fulfilling way. You become more aware of what the future holds for you long term and are happy to go along with a friend’s point of view. By taking up invitations to travel you succeed in putting together a plan of action which propels you further into achieving certain goals by the end if the year. Needing a break of some kind you stay where you feel comfortable rekindling one particular friendship.

SAGITTARIUS [22nd November-21st December] You discover April to be a month where you can make certain changes within your personal and working life. Mid month and after seeing the extent of some ones behaviour you change tactics, giving then an insight into what you are not prepared to deal with anymore. By supporting those you love and closing ranks you become much stronger and focused on what is important not only in your life but those around you. Happy and content with the way the month has ended you enjoy time with family.

AQUARIUS [22nd January21st February] Busy as ever and with hardly any time to spare during April you organise the first week in which you are able to visit family and friends. Any tension mounting from overwork is soon recognised and dealt with quickly with beneficial gains following. Creative abilities come to light when invited to an evening out to visit loyal friends. Standing your ground over a sensitive matter you feel better when giving your point of view, clearing any misunderstandings up. End of month its feet up and relax at last.

PISCES [22ND February-20th March] Taking stock of all what you have done recently puts light to how much you have achieved over the last few weeks or months. Giving yourself a pat on the back you make plans for a well-earned break. Family matters become important around the 24th to the 26th when news arrives of a birth, marriage or a long awaited homecoming. Making sure important documents are checked and kept up to date takes a little time but well worth the effort. Happy to help out you make new and lasting friends.

SPRING SUNSHINE If you're not going away this year, you might like to introduce an exotic corner to your patio.

B

road-leaved cannas, hostas, deep orange dahlias, fiery crocosmias and tender bulbs such as gloriosa will all add heat to the scene, while plants of architectural interest such as Fatsia japonica, palms, cordyline and phormium can all add to that tropical feel. Put sun-loving palms and succulents in the hottest spots, and position shade-tolerant plants, such as hostas, beneath the canopies of large-leaved plants. It will be too late now to grow your tropical specimens from scratch, but you'll be able to find them in garden centres and nurseries. Remember, though, that some of your plants such as cannas and bananas are tender and will need extra care to overwinter them. Tropical styles tend to look best in urban situations and work well with modern furniture and accessories. Remember, with exotic schemes the emphasis is on the bold plants, not the pots. So don't use elaborate, brightly-coloured pots for an exotic effect, and avoid anything green in the background, such as a lawn, so that all

the leaves are clearly visible. Good backdrops include: Trachycarpus wagnerianus, a neater version of the Chusan palm ('T. fortunei'), with smaller, stiffer leaves, able to withstand a windy sight; or Chamaerops humilis, a slow-growing dwarf fan palm which comes from southern Europe but is happy in colder areas. Tropical scenes need careful, sparing use of really vibrant colour. Red hot pokers (Kniphofia), ginger lilies (Hedychium) and cannas can provide this. Good varieties include 'C. striata', which has 45cm (18in) paddle-shaped, green and yellow striped leaves and produces sizzling orange flowers in midsummer. The rich orange flowers and variegated leaves of 'C. pretoria' create an exotic feel and another good choice is 'C. president', which produces scarlet blooms, or the golden yellow 'King Midas'. Cannas need loads of humus in the soil and do well in large pots in a sheltered, sunny spot. Alternatively, go for small pots of sizzling scarlet geraniums placed in front of the larger foliage plants.

Vibrant ornamental grasses can also be used in tropical schemes such as Imperata cylindrica 'Rubra', which makes a clump of bright green leaves whose tips turn blood red and then the rest of the leaves follow suit, reddening almost to the base. Fluffy silvery-white flowers appear late in the summer. This one needs fertile, moist soil rich in humus and should be placed in full sun or part shade. You'll need to mulch it in winter if it is to survive. Try to keep each pot reasonably simple, giving stand-alone space to foliage specimens such as hostas and palms. Place your architectural plants such as cannas, cordylines or phormiums in the middle of the pot and fill the gaps in front with smaller flowering plants to complement. Then, on those hot summer days when you're sitting on your patio, you'll feel like you could be a million miles away.

breezemagazine 34

Best of the bunch - Lupin No mixed border should be without lupins, with their impressive spires of flowers in a variety of colours. There are many varieties of Russell Hybrids - tall ones to stick towards the back of the border, or smaller types to be used as fillers. They are easy to grow from seed and will thrive in sun or partial shade, flowering in June, but protect young plants from slugs, which love them. The bigger types will need staking in exposed gardens in rich soil. Deadhead them once they have flowered to encourage a second flush of flowers. Lupins have a relatively short flowering period, so plant the tall ones at the back of the border with Japanese anemones to hide the fading foliage. Smaller varieties, such as 'Gallery Series', can be planted between shrubs and evergreen ground cover. Good tall varieties include the Band of Nobles series, while if you want a dwarf variety look out for 'Gallery Series' and 'Lulu', both of which are a mixture of colours.

Good enough to eat - Keep peas pestfree If your peas are in flower now, they are at risk from pea moth, which lays its eggs on pea flowers in June and July. You won't notice them until you open the pods to start shelling your peas and find that one or more of them have been attacked by a small white grub, which is usually still inside the pod. To avoid pea moth, make early sowings of peas which flower in May and early June, or later sowings which flower after July. Alternatively, grow mangetout, which is picked before the peas have developed. Pea and bean weevils can also be a problem earlier on in spring, nibbling notches out of young leaves, however they don't generally cause serious harm and will not need controlling. If you have gaps in your rows of peas it may be due to mice. Start peas off in pots or sow extra seeds to fill the gaps later.

Trade associations, including the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI), the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) and the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) have all joined together, alongside Consumer Minister Kevin Brennan, to give their approval to the Code. Developed and launched in response to consumer concerns over pricing, quality of work and customer service, the Code safeguards consumer interests by helping them to identify responsible garages. It also helps encourage the service and repair sector

to maintain a high standard of customer service. Kevin Brennan, minister for consumer affairs, said, "The trade associations coming together in support of the Code is testament to the fact that this is a robust code of practice that not only protects consumers, but also offers an opportunity for the industry to take control of its own reputation and future. Kevin Steel comments, "The Motor Industry Code of Practice is an excellent scheme. It shows our customers we are not only technically capable, but also that we will deal with them on a professional manner. It has provided us with a consistent approach to each customer and being fully independent, they know there is no commercial interest behind what we have to tell them." Father and son team Poplar Tree Services know all about what’s important to their customers when it comes to providing a professional tree felling service, “It’s not about just lopping bits off the tree.” says Dave Coupe from Breaston, father of the father and son team, “It’s about working with our clients to ensure we arrive at what’s best for the tree and the surrounding habitat. We always do our best to reassure our clients that we will leave their property as we found it. After all many properties have buildings such as sheds, greenhouses and conservatories, and we really do appreciate how much time, effort and investment people put into their homes. People are understandably proud of their homes. We talk to our clients about what changes they will expect once the work is done, and how their environment will be improved.” Dave doesn’t deny that being a professional Arborist can be a dangerous job, not to mention tricky and physically demanding. But he is adamant that the rewards far outweigh the dangers. “I left the army after 24 years of service,” he told us, “but knew a desk job wasn’t for me and was lucky enough to have the opportunity to train at the Broomfield Agricultural College as well as Kingswood Arborist Training centre in Kent, before starting up in business doing something I love. Its fascinating work and every day brings a new challenge. As a professional arborist I am always learning something new, and get to work every day outside in the fresh air looking after people’s trees – what could be more rewarding than that?”

Pete along with wife Ruth, son Tom and many friends and family are undertaking a two-week sponsored trek along the Wainwright Coast-to-Coast walk. The youngest member of the walking partly will be 9 month old Evie Marples (in her dads’ rucksack!); the eldest being Colleen and of course a lady’s age is never mentioned. This walk is 192 miles (or possibly as far as 220 miles!) along a mostly unsignposted long distance footpath in Northern England. It was devised by Alfred Wainwright and passes through three National Parks – the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. It extends from the Irish Sea at St Bees to the North Sea at Robin Hood’s Bay. Anybody who would like to support this tremendous cause can do so by either coming to the club day on 24th April or by going to the following JustGiving page – www.justgiving.com/John-Gawthorpe Pete and Ruth will also be keeping an up to date blog during the walk.
