Continuing our success stories Breeze finds out how local businesses have weathered the financial storms and enjoyed great success over the years...

THE CHANGING FACES OF OAKES INSURANCE OVER THE YEARS INCLUDING RICHARD OAKES

It all started on Friday 13th twenty five years ago for a local company Oakes Insurance, now based in Long Eaton - Breeze finds out how times have changed for them...

W

hilst the business started circa 1966 as W H Hughes Insurance it was taken over by Pat John Deere in 1972. The business traded as John Deere Insurance Consultants and after Mr Deere’s death the business began to suffer. In 1985 as one of three partners, Richard Oakes purchased the ailing business from Mr Deere’s widow. Although operating as a partnership, Richard constantly found himself running the business single-handed and therefore, in 1992 decided to buy his partners out with a ten year business loan. Freeing himself of his old partners, Richard decided to put his own name above the door, allowing him the freedom to invest as he saw fit. He began to expand the business,

breezemagazine 4

investing in the most up-to-date technology and also realised that paying for inexperienced staff was a false economy and recruited personel who could “cut the mustard” Finding local staff with experience proved to be paramount in helping move the business forward. Local staff know local people and what they want. Ten years ago on 6th March 2000 Oakes Insurance Consultants moved to their new premises at the current location on Derby Road, Long Eaton. The new office was ideal, as being on four floors and having a stable block in the rear, provided adequate space in which to expand and provided a visible ground-floor shop front to capture the passing trade. In 1985 the main business stream was motor insurance and home insurance but using expertise gleaned from working in Nottingham for an Insurance Company and then for a local broker Richard grew the business insurance portfolio providing competitive policies for local businesses. Richard’s business philosophy is to provide the client with a policy they can trust and a service that is top notch. “If we say we will do something we will do it and if we can’t we will tell you why”. This seems to have been successful over the last twenty five years and is one of the reasons why Oakes Insurance Consultants has succeeded when other local brokers fought for the local custom and why Oakes is

still standing whilst several of its competitor have fallen. Over the last few years with new regulation Richard has had to devote most of his time to ensuring the business meets with regulatory requirements and therefore has had to delegate the business insurance side. Still looking to expand, in 2008, RIchard made one of his employees, Ashley Burton, a partner and this has proven to be extremely successful. “With Ashley’s natural enthusiasm we are doing quite well in the current recession and are very well placed to move forward with the economy”. Although he has built a business of which both he and the local community can be proud, Richard is still excited by the constant challenges of change and to that end still arrives early every morning to work on pushing Oakes Insurance Consultants further forward. And as he approaches the 25th Anniversary of Oakes, Richard is not turning his thoughts to the “pipe and slippers”, but rather to the next twenty five years. PDSA, the UK’s leading veterinary charity, provides free veterinary care to the sick and injured pets of people in need. Find out how you can help...

T

he PDSA charity operates through a network of forty three PetAid hospitals, five5 PetAid branches and over three hundred and fifty PetAid practices. This year PDSA vets and nurses will provide more than two million free treatments and over 360,000 affordable preventive treatments, including vaccinations, neutering and microchipping. To be eligible for PDSA care, pet owners must be in receipt of either Housing or Council Tax Benefit and live within the postcode catchment area of their local PDSA PetAid service. In 2010, PDSA PetAid services will cost more than £50 million. The charity is funded entirely by public support; mainly donations, gifts in wills and trading. PDSA operates over 170 charity shops UKwide and the charity is supported by 4,800 volunteers.

£6 MILLION APPEAL With your help we can build for the future, PDSA faces an ever-increasing demand for its veterinary services. They need to raise at least £6 million over the next four years to construct four new PDSA PetAid hospitals, with each one costing approximately £1.5 million.

breeze pet parade March is Pet Oral Health Month, a nationwide campaign that the experts at Churchcroft Veterinary Centre on the High Road in Chilwell are supporting to improve the health of pets’ mouths. Most dogs and cats over three years of age have significant dental disease. Not only does this cause an invisible discomfort to the animal, ranging from a mild nagging ache to intense pain on eating, it also compromises health by causing bacteria to invade the rest of the body. Bacteria occurring in the mouth in association with dental disease have been shown to cause kidney infections that can lead on to kidney failure and in other cases can cause heart disease and liver disease. It is this bacteria that causes the antisocial halitosis that we can often smell! To encourage owners to appreciate the importance of good oral health care Churchcroft are offering Veterinary tooth checks free of charge throughout March. “We will have tooth care goodies for all patients and talk through any tooth problems found. In addition we are stocking up on a range of client education material for you to take away and browse at your leisure”. For any pets who need dental attention they are also offering a full 33% off all dentistry and dentistry associated costs for the whole of March! Do a good deed for your faithful friend. Give Churchcroft a call on 0115 922 4855 to arrange a free tooth check ASAP. Whether your pet sadly passes at your home or is put to sleep at your Veterinary Practice, you can choose where it is cremated. Forget Me Nott Pet Crematorium is set in tranquil countryside between the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire border. They offer guaranteed individual cremations which they can personalise to suit your needs. This may include the collection of your pet from your veterinary practice or home if you are having difficulty in coming to terms with your pets passing. They let you decide what you would like for your pet in your own time and charge reasonable, affordable prices for their services. You can telephone Tracy or Steve to talk through everything you need, or you are more than welcome to visit them, by prior appointment, to give you the peace of mind that you need and to assure you your pet is handled with great care throughout the process. They can return your pet’s ashes to you usually within 24 - 48 hours. “We also have a private Farewell Room which offers a peaceful place where both adults and children can say your final ‘goodbye’s’, in privacy and comfort before cremation takes place. If you have any worries or concerns please call us, we are very happy to help and guide you through this sad time to give you all the peace of mind you need”. Honour your pet’s memory through cremation, at Swancar Farm, Trowell, Nr Ilkeston, Nottingham. Contact Tracy and Steve on 0115 9441047 or 07980486715 www.forgetmenottpc.co.uk breezemagazine 7

SPRING CLEAN The daffodils are out, the sun is shining and the chill in the air has really eased off it finally feels like spring has sprung. For some this sounds hellish, for others pure bliss, but no matter which side of the fence you sit it’s time to don those Marigolds and dig out that duster Or better still call in the experts to transform your home and add that sparkle!

T

houghts have turned to that favourite spring pastime of having a good old clean right into the dark depths of all our home’s nooks and crannies. Aside from pristine skirting boards and a spotless oven, there are many benefits to a spot of vacuuming, polishing and scrubbing, such as burning off some of that extra Easter weight you will accumalate with your chocolate goodies!. And you can even do your bit for the environment when working your way to a house beautiful, by choosing planet-friendly products - or ditching shop-bought ones altogether and using old-fashioned methods instead.

breezemagazine 10

HERE’S OUR TOP TEN TIPS:

1 2

For example, a mixture of boiling water, baking soda and vinegar is the ideal solution for cleaning drains, while soap or ecological shampoos can be used to clean rugs and upholstery.

Get rid of ants by simply wiping affected areas with a solution of half vinegar and half water, and de-clog showerheads by dismantling them, soaking the pieces in vinegar for two to three hours, then cleaning off any sediment with a stiff brush.

3

Baking soda is another household item that can work natural wonders. Make into a paste and scrub stainless steel, iron and copper pots to a superb shine, or use as a cheap alternative to supermarket products for freshening up smelly bins and fridges. It can also be sprinkled on the carpet and left overnight then vacuumed up to get rid of odours, added to cat litter to keep smells away, and mixed with lemon essential oil to treat pet 'accidents'.

4 5

After cleaning brass, get it sparkling using olive oil to prevent tarnishing, and make your own effective furniture polish by mixing two parts olive oil with one part lemon juice or white wine vinegar. Bring the 'great outdoors' indoors and brighten up the house with flowers. Conserve water by choosing beautiful floral varieties that don't need much to 'drink', like lavender, buddleia and wallflowers.

6

Tackling various household maintenance jobs can also help you be more eco friendly - and could even save you money.

7 8

Make repairing dripping taps your top priority because they could be wasting as much as 13 litres of water a day, which is especially costly if you’re on a water meter. Now there’s more natural daylight to make the most of you can avoid switching on lights well into the evening, but even so it’s a good idea to replace old-fashioned bulbs with energy efficient ones.

breezemagazine 12

9

Only use washing machines and dishwashers when they are full and check whether your electricity tariff is cheaper in the evening and at weekends. Give the tumble dryer a rest and make the most of the warmer weather by using a washing line outside. Just watch out for April showers! Avoid washing clothes at high temperatures and turn the iron off when there's only one thing left to press, so heat isn't wasted afterwards. The same principle applies to hair straighteners; make the most of residual heat.

10

Brush aside thoughts of harming the environment when touching up your paintwork too, by donating to local community projects any leftover oil, paint, varnish or solvent, instead of throwing it all down the drain. The effort is really worth it when you consider the UK wastes millions of litres of paint every year. Making the most of your home doesn't have to be at the cost of Mother Earth, as these simple ideas show. Helping to save the planet is easy when you know how.

breeze women in business Christine Hibbert has been in the accountancy business working locally for over twenty five years, eight years ago she set up her own practice - CVH Accounting. “I consider myself, very much as a people person accounts and anything relating to finance can be very daunting for most people, this is where the job brings out the best in me. I pride myself on being able to offer advice and a service that gives my clients a clear understanding”. Christine puts her success down to being part of a team. For many years she has worked along side John Green, a well respected man in his field. Together they have built up a reputation that goes before them. Her success also comes from hard work and determination to get the best for her clients - it’s important to keep up with all the latest tax issues and governmental changes. “I attend courses on a regular basis to keep up with the latest regulations”. Anyone who meets Christine will comment she is not your typical accountant! She offers knowledgeable advice, with a welcoming smile. “I love the fact I can help so many people, whether it’s a local tradesman setting up on their own to a taxi driver through to pensioners - whatever walk of life they will all feel welcome. Heather Hill qualified as a Beauty Therapist in 1977. Over the past thirty three years she has had an interesting and varied career which resulted in the development of euphoria situated on Stoney Street Beeston in 2000. “I had been working as a Beauty and Complementary Therapy Programme Manager at an FE college in the north of the county and decided it was the right time to strike out on my own. I missed the client contact, I hated the twice daily journey on the motorway, by working closer to home I would be able to see more of my family, and I hoped the management skills I had gained whilst working in education would help me to develop a successful business.” says Heather. “When I first qualified as a therapist most of the clients were middle aged ladies who had time on their hands. Now we have a society who regardless of their age or gender, are interested in making the best of themselves and at euphoria I have selected treatments and products which really do work. Our skin care company, Jan Marini, incorporate cutting edge medical research in the development of their products so that we are able to offer our clients visible, dramatic results. We are also having tremendous results with CACI Ultimate which I believe is the next best thing to a face lift!” The next euphoria treatment menu will see the introduction of threading to remove facial hair, a new, quicker, lash extension treatment and a lash lifting service which makes even the smallest of lashes look much longer. “We now have a team of highly qualified therapists who are dedicated to providing clients with the best possible service. I am proud to say – we have the technology, we have the knowledge, we have the skills, we get the results.” Please telephone euphoria on 0115 922 0304 to make an appointment or call into the salon at 4 Stoney Street Beeston

breeze women in business It’s strange how something enters your life and ends up becoming a major turning point…. Pat Ashmore’s sister had joined a weight loss programme called ‘LighterLife’ and she shrank before Pat’s eyes. “At the time I was overweight and had successfully lost weight several times with various other organisations, but had always put most of it back on, LighterLife offered the longterm solution. I had reached the point where I felt I was destined to be overweight for the rest of my life, but didn’t realise the control was all in my head. I was sceptical, but joined in September 2005 and by Christmas had lost 3 stones! Whilst on the Programme I was made redundant and decided maybe it was time for a change of direction. I was so pleased with my success, I wanted to help others achieve the same success. My new found confidence gave me the courage to start my own business and after completing training I was up and running and have not looked back since. Four years on I have helped over 600 clients lose an amazing 1400 stones. I have maintained my own goal weight by making only small changes to my life style and using clothes as a measure instead of the scales! LighterLife, telephone 01332 874048

Tracey Weathall has always dreamt of opening her own hair and beauty salon. The dream came true when she took over a hairdressers in Beeston Rylands . She qualified in beauty therapy and holistic massage with distinction, working part-time over the past few years. So when she took redundancy from her full time job she was in a good position to go for it! However starting a business in today’s climate was an incredible challenge and a nerve-racking experience. Not only is Tracey a qualified beautician but also a shrewd business women, who recognises an opening when she sees one. Their pamper evenings have been a huge success as she puts together a just the right packages for her clients to relax and enjoy the evening. Her aim was to make the salon, a relaxed and welcoming environment with a touch of glamour and fortunately Tracey and her team have the formula right and are going from strength to strength even after only five short months. So much so they are already recruiting another hairdresser on a rent a chair basis. Tracey would like to thank all their new customers who have become friends as well as clients and her partner Jamie for all his support in getting her business off the ground. Audrey Loveland of Panache in Beeston was born in Kent and moved to Derbyshire in 1973. Currently she lives in Nottingham with her husband Len. Audrey has always worked in the fashion industry. In 1987 she became the ladies fashion manageress and buyer for the Barry Austen group. She developed a keen sense of customers tastes and requirements. Eventually, wanting her own business Audrey bought the already established ladies wear shop Panache in Stoney Street Beeston. Being in the retail sector is notoriously tough with competitors that include large national chains, but where Panache has succeeded over the years is in being a very astute provider of finest ladies wear, in a local and friendly context. Audrey always endeavours to make every single customer who comes through the door feel comfortable to simply browse and yet she is also available for advice when required. A guiding hand from someone who can genuinely tell you if something is working or not, is invaluable for that special outfit. As a result Panache has customers who return time and time again. This is no surprise to anyone who visits the shop and sees for themselves the lovely designs and accessories, which includes jewellery for that finishing touch. Panache is open Monday to Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pm. They look forward to welcoming you! Panache 1 Stoney Street, Beeston. Telephone: 0115 9225 278

Jodie Lilley of Bodyworks Beauty is 38 and married with a 12-year-old son. Her love of beauty therapy, and in particular waxing, began when she was 14 and used to save up her pocket money to get her legs waxed at a local salon in Chesterfield where she grew up. She loved the calm atmosphere in the beauty salon combined with the ability to make people feel great and this inspired her to become a therapist. After looking into the courses available she decided to study for A levels which were needed to apply for the BTEC HND course which was the highest level possible. At 18 she moved to London and studied for two years at LCF College, qualifying with distinction. After working for two years in a busy salon in Islington, North London, the opportunity arose to travel the world so Jodie decided on a career break and travelled for eighteen months. Returning home she moved to Nottingham and after having worked in various salons, decided to take the risk of going it alone. Through sheer determination and hard work she has managed to make it a success and the salon has gone from strength to strength, surprisingly having its best year ever during the recession last year. Jodie would like to thank her loyal clients and also her exceptional senior therapist Holly Chan who has been with her now for three years. She would also like to welcome new senior therapist Clare Lowe, who joins the team in March with ten years experience. After surviving the recession Jodie is very optimistic about the future and would like to welcome all clients old and new to visit Bodyworks beauty and try out their wide range of quality treatments in their calm and relaxed salon. HOROSCOPES THE MONTH AHEAD

By ANNE HARBOUR Dip.Hyp. HPD. MNCH - Clinical Hypnotherapist HPD. Member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (MNCH) ARIES [21st Mar-20th April]

CANCER [22nd Jun-23rd July]

LIBRA [24th Sep-22nd Oct]

This month, particularly you become satisfied that any preparations made over the last weeks or months from which you are able to benefit from, show themselves to be working in a slow but positive way. Stronger and ready to move forward you begin clearing any debris that has held you back - seeing the future look more than promising. Time spent with close and trusted friends is welcoming. Taking a step back in time you learn from past experiences. The month ends with pleasing results.

Channelling all that energy, proves difficult to handle when flitting it away in all directions, however you put it to good use, supporting those who have had a difficult time recently. Loosing or mislaying items of importance, when not in control annoys you. Learning from this you plan the next time round with more caution. With some kind of a break approaching for most of you, a plan of action is put into place pleasing you and loved ones. Excited by new prospects you look into matters thoroughly.

With an understanding of a situation with unusual circumstances you help someone live part of their life you feel is long overdue. By making some arrangements with another person long-term commitments get under way. Anything outstanding financially is dealt with accordingly with the relief of seeing the future much brighter. Drawn by your own instincts you complete and achieve one of your goals. Your creative abilities shine through when providing someone with information on you.

TAURUS [21ST Apr-20th May] Any delays or set backs in the beginning of March are soon overcome with negotiations taking place and a significant outcome in your favour, after the meeting is held. Bottled up emotions are kept under control, until you feel the time is right to say what is on your mind, causing some surprise to a person you feel has little or no emotions toward you. Friends and family gather to celebrate at a time, which is suitable for all. For those who are single a chance meeting takes place, which blows you away.

SCORPIO [23rd Oct-22nd Nov] LEO [24th July-23rd August] Energized and raring to go you enjoy what the month brings. March becomes hectic and with the way you feel everything seems to fall into place under your supervision. Whether surrounded with muck and dust or an orderly mess of some kind you begin to feel happy when progress is being made. For those enduring long distance travelling some relief is felt when changes take place, which are out of your control. When in doubt transport is checked and provided supplying others with support.

GEMINI [21st May-21st June] With a busy month approaching, you quickly discover you have no alternative than to become more organized than normal, therefore you plan a day or so with loved ones prior to the time. People who rely on your generosity understand and quickly adapt, dealing with their own lives accordingly, proving you are not required in the same capacity after all. Important paperwork left unattended may be removed from your safe place, accidentally causing delay but with no harm done. A welcome change at the end of the month.

breezemagazine 28

VIRGO [24th August-23rd September] Sharing and caring becomes the key to a very lovable month. With lots going on in your life a day with loved ones helps elevate any tension you have felt recently. Disappointed with someone’s behaviour you decide to pull back to see for yourself the outcome when they are left to their own devises. Invitations for social events come your way latter part of the month in which you are introduced to people alike making new and lasting friends. A days outing is enjoyed with close friends or family.

March holds much in terms of promise, and achievements. Having been let down in the past you make sure you benefit when dealing with important matters. Taking care not to rock the boat advice is taken when seeking guidance putting your mind at rest. Feeling more confidants and in control you plan accordingly putting all the pieces of the jigsaw into place. Enjoying time out you make March one month to remember. Inviting new and exciting people into your home make their visit worth your while.

SAGITTARIUS [23rd Nov-22nd Nov] With some kind of change in the air you prepare yourself for the unexpected, that either way doesn’t affect you or your family. Happy to help out you make sure the ending is satisfactory putting a closure on the matter. Tension in or around the home lifts when an explanation is given, understanding everything was blown out of proportion. Trying to be in two places at once becomes a test in itself but proving this to others becomes impossible. However the day ends well with fun and laughter.

CAPRICORN [23rd Dec-20th Jan] March becomes unexpectedly challenging, with you ending up feeling tired but good at what has been achieved short term. Benefiting from changes made in the home you look forward to some kind of social event. Sorting out cupboards and drawers throwing out the old and bringing in the new gives you a feeling of self-satisfaction. Members of the family you haven’t seen for some time turn up on your doorstep unexpectedly. Spending time with them helps you catch up on all the la test news.

AQUARIUS [21st Jan-19th Feb] Busy as ever and with hardly any spare time for yourself you make certain a few days are put on standby for some well-deserved peace and quiet. Helping out where others cannot takes precious time but you become satisfied all has been accomplished. Speaking your mind doesn’t seem to go down well, but does the trick for someone else. Taking no chances you thoroughly check on paperwork before signing on the dotted line. Your confidence builds when an admirer comes into your life suddenly.

PISCES [20th Feb-20th Mar] Left to your own devises you continue and complete some form of work within the allocated time. Giving sound advise to a colleague is welcomed when confusion steps in. Feeling more yourself, you look forward to the sun and sea and all that is healing for you. Having neglected some item in the home you find that carrying on where you left off is not as easy. You prove how valuable you have become when spending time with younger members of the family. Finances take a boost when least expected.

GARDEN FLUTTER Attracting wildlife to your garden is still on the agenda of top designers, as horticultural shows are demonstrating this year - with butterflies very much in the picture.

A

good garden might be visited by twenty two species of butterfly and hundreds of different moths each year. Yet three-quarters of the 59 resident butterfly species that remain in

Britain are in decline, including the most common ones: the large white, small white, red admiral, peacock and small tortoiseshell. Now PlantforLife, an initiative run by the Horticultural Trades Association to help people make the most of their gardens, has teamed up with environmental charity Butterfly Conservation to launch a public awareness campaign to encourage people to attract butterflies into their garden. Butterfly Conservation president Sir David Attenborough said: "Almost unbelievably, much of Britain's countryside is a no-go area

for many favourite butterflies. Habitat has been ploughed up or become overgrown. Anybody who's been for a country walk recently will tell you butterflies are a rarity. Scientists fear that in some areas we're entering a post-butterfly era." The campaigners have now produced a guide, Making Your Garden Flutter, which offers tips to help preserve these creatures. Butterflies love heavily-scented flowers, so plant Sedum spectabile and Verbena bonariensis to attract them into your garden.
