Time for the Personal Touch... With the highest divorce rate now amongst the over 60’s, adding to the growing number of younger singles, what better time to launch a truly personal introduction service in the region? Fifty three year old Michelle Castro-Vieira is passionate about people and helping them - whatever their age - to achieve further happiness by finding a rewarding relationship. She has been divorced twice so can empathise with what it’s like to be a divorcee and a single parent. Now happily hitched for the past thirteen years to Rui, who is Portuguese, she says “I travelled a lot and lived in Hong Kong which is where we met and married....” A doting grandmother of five and an active member of the local community, Michelle trained for ministry in the Church, has worked for local charities and serves as a Magistrate on the Mansfield and Worksop Bench. She also ran a driving school specialising in teaching the anxious and is a trained listener with counselling skills. “I’ve seen good friends hurt using online dating and I think people are tired of the impersonal approach serving a mass market - which has a low success rate with obvious security fears,” said Michelle. “I became aware that there was no locally based introduction service for people genuinely seeking a relationship. I think it’s time for a return to the personal touch offering honesty, integrity and trust. I provide an accessible service without computer matching, where all members are interviewed face-to-face.” Contact Michelle at Castro & Vieira today to secure one of a limited number of free memberships to celebrate the launch of this new venture.

POWER THE BILLS DOWN There was was a time when we were told that power would be virtually pointless metering as it would be so cheap! Whilst that dream was, sadly, never realised we do now have the technology to gain free energy from the sun to help cut our energy bills significantly. Here is how one local company is helping homeowners save money year upon year. eset Renewables are a family company based in Nottingham and who service the East Midlands and Yorkshire. As a company they have built up a reputation for quality at a very reasonable cost. They are a friendly team with over thirty five years of experience. The company was set up in 2009 after many years trading as electrical contractors, primarily working on domestic and small commercial projects. “I saw the need for low carbon and low
R
energy solutions as the cost of electricity was rising out of all proportion to income. We have now installed over 200 solar installations ranging from 1.2kwp up to 50 kwp . The larger solar projects are ideal for commercial concerns with either large roof spaces or areas of land for ground mounted systems” says John Allen the owner of the company. As the government have changed the rules governing solar technologies and eligibility to accessing the payments Reset Renewables have kept up to date and are providing EPC (energy performance certificates ) as required from April at no cost to their customers. “As a company our eyes are on the future with new technologies including, instead of exporting your unused solar electricity to your electricity company you could heat the water in your hot water tank for when you get home” adds John. The company started by looking at reducing cost and cO2 emissions and are now supplying and fitting Led lamps. These lamps have a long life and can reduce the cost of an equivalent halogen by over ten times. Example 50w halogen equivalent 4.5w
in Led lighting. Commercially the replacement of fluorescent light fittings with Led technology have a number of advantages along with the saving on electricity they also reduce the need for air conditioning as they emit very little heat and the cO2 savings are yet another positive outcome from their installation. At Reset Renewables this is a bright time for our customers and there has never been a better time to take advantage of this now mature technology. It is safe, cost effective and helps the planet what are you waiting for? Contact Reset renewables on 0115 837 8322
This is probably the best time to invest in solar PV, with the cost of installation at an all time low. With the new feed-in tariff of 21p per unit a 2kwp install could save you over £500 per year on electricity saving. Feed-in tariff payments giving a return on investment of nearly 9%. These can give a much better return on investment than a typical bank or building society and is a tax free income on domestic installations. The feed-in tariff is index linked and, after years of talking about climate change, feed-in tariffs are fast becoming the accepted norm when upgrading your energy use. Solar PV or Photo Voltaic panels are electricity generators on your roof, they capture the sun light and turn it into electricity which you can use or sell back to your electricity supplier, so you are getting paid twice and if you use the electricity you save on your utility bills. This almost sounds too good to be true but the government have introduced these measures in order to attract large numbers of people across the country to install their own generators, using solar PV, and help them meet their climate change targets (as there is no C02 produced with solar technology) This is the green clean way of saving on your utility bills and the environment.Furthermore, these payments are government guaranteed for 25 years. The cost of a 2kw installation starts at just £5750 and a 2kw system would be ideal for a large terrace house or semi. Did you know that it takes nearly eighteen years for a child’s foot to fully develop? This means that children’s feet remain vulnerable to poor-fitting footwear right through their school-days, and into their late teens. It is vitally important that your child’s shoes fit their feet properly to prevent problems later in life. The ideal shoe can be difficult to find and it is often a matter of compromise, particularly with older children who may be influenced by fashion or their friends. Footwear which is too large, too small, or does not fit properly, can cause life-long foot problems, which can be easily avoided by taking care with the type of shoe purchased and considering a few main points. All children’s footwear should be measured for length and width and fitted by an appropriately trained shoe fitter. If fitting is not available, or is refused, go elsewhere. Poorly-fitting footwear in young children could result in deformity, whereas in older children it may result in toenail and skin problems. If your child tells you that their feet hurt, do check their shoes, as well as their feet, for signs of wear and tear. Make sure the shoe is not rubbing and if it is, it’s time for a new pair. Further information on caring for your child’s feet and purchasing footwear can be found at www.feetforlife.org and www.shoe-shop.org.uk Copies of the Childrens’ Foot Health Register – Centres of Excellence for Children’s Shoe Fitting are available at FEET (etc), free of charge. Ockbrook School to Introduce Co-Education for Year 7 Entry from 2013 A leading Independent School in Derbyshire has announced its commitment to the growth of the Senior Department and Sixth Form as a co-educational school from 2013. Ockbrook School in Ockbrook, Derbyshire will undertake a transition to co-education, with the first intake of boys in to Year 7 in September 2013. This follows the success of the school’s move to strengthen co-education to age 11 in its Grangemount Nursery & Junior School to Ockbrook School in 2011. Alison Steele, Head Teacher, Ockbrook School, says: “Our decision to embrace co-education, starting in Year 7 in 2013, is a positive response to the growing number of boys who are now benefiting from the high quality education that we offer in Grangemount, and whose parents are keen for them to continue to be educated at Ockbrook School. “Boys and girls now mix naturally in our Nursery, Primary and Junior Schools and we think that the gradual move to co-education will enable us to build a strong family feeling in our Senior Department. It will also enable our pupils to prepare better for life, university and the work place.” This is not the first time in Ockbrook School’s long history that boys and girls have both benefited from the school’s focus on exceptional academic attainment. The school has prospered as both single sex and co-educational. Reverend Robert Hopcroft, Chair of Governors and Trustee of the Moravian Church, says: “The school is healthy and vibrant. We are acting now as a positive response to longer-term demographic and social trends identified in research undertaken by independent education consultants and the Independent Schools Council. This indicates that more and more parents are seeking a balanced educational experience for their children. “Over the coming months the school will be investing in appropriate facilities, infrastructure and staffing to deliver a full curriculum for both girls and boys. This will include extending opportunities in sport and other extracurricular activities, from which all our pupils will benefit.” Grangemount and Ockbrook School are located between Nottingham and Derby, just off the A52. Grangemount Nursery & Junior School to Ockbrook School is an Independent School for boys and girls aged 2-11. Ockbrook School is currently an Independent School for girls aged 11-18 years. DYSLEXIA Does your child have difficulty with reading, writing, spelling, short-term memory or organising themselves?
People with dyslexia think and learn differently from others. They sometimes feel as if their mind is 'differently wired'. Dyslexic people find it particularly difficult to learn to read, write and/or spell, even though their abilities in other ways may be average or better. They usually also have an unusual pattern of strengths and weaknesses in other areas. There is no cure for dyslexia but with the right teaching and support, dyslexics can overcome their difficulties and achieve great things. Dyslexia means 'a difficulty with words' and particularly written words but other things may be affected as well: maths, memory and organisation, to name a few. However, people with dyslexia can learn strategies to help with their difficulties. Those with dyslexia do not all have the same way of thinking, but there are common patterns. For instance, Dyslexia can happen in people of all levels of ability - some are very gifted, most are of average ability, some struggle with other aspects
of learning, but all have strengths. Dyslexia is sometimes diagnosed in children soon after they start school but quite often it is not recognised until much later in life. If you recognise any of the symptoms shown in the panel you may wish to contact our confidential Dyslexia Helpline for free information and advice. We can provide dyslexia screening, dyslexia assessment, one to one specialist tuition and courses for dyslexic children. Call to discuss how we can help your child overcome their difficulties.
Telephone: 0115 924 6888 Helpline@dyslexia.uk.net / www.dyslexia.uk.net Sherwood House, 7 Gregory Boulevard, Nottingham NG7 6LB
SOME INDICATORS OF DYSLEXIA: • Difficult reading / problems understanding text. • Reads a word on one page and can’t remember it on the next. • Finds spelling difficult, reverses letters (e.g. b for d or was for saw). Spells the same word several different ways in a piece of work. • Learns how to spell a word one week and has forgotten it the next. • Has lots of ideas, but can’t put them down on paper. • Has difficulty remembering sequences such as the days of the week, the alphabet and times tables. • Is disorganised at home and school, constantly loses and forgets items and information. • In other ways a bright and alert child. • Frustration has led to behavioural or emotional difficulties.

breezeappeal LOCAL CHARITY NEEDS YOUR HELP. For thirty eight years Midlands Women's Aid have provided support and a Refuge to thousands of women and children experiencing Domestic Abuse. Unfortunately, due to severe cuts in funding they cannot continue to provide services at the current level.
Midlands Women's Aid are currently reviewing their Outreach Services to look at the most cost effective way they can continue, however there will be a reduction in their service provision. “We will continue to provide our Drop-in service. Unfortunately many of our smaller projects will end. This will include some of our evening and weekend Outreach, our Helping Hands Project and some of our Children's Service provision. Statistics show that Domestic Abuse are on the increase and our referrals have doubled in the last six months. We do not have the capacity to deal with these numbers. What will happen to the women and children in need of support when services are cut further? Our work is not only emotionally demanding but dangerous as our workers
place themselves in danger on a daily basis. We often receive threats because of the work we do. Why them do we continue to do so? Because we have a passion and are committed to the plight of victims of Domestic Abuse. If you have followed our last four adverts in this magazine you will have read about how our services have saved and changed the lives of many women and children. We have supported them to remain safe and helped them raise their self esteem. Please help Midlands Women's Aid to continue their work. breezegardening Breeze takes a look at how the novice gardener can gain a garden full of colour this spring and beyond.
M
ost people seem to regard flowering plants as the most important part of the garden, and with good reason. The many beautiful colours are a tonic when we look out onto our garden space or
patio. The strength of some of the colours we see is especially striking and are entirely natural which lends a depth seldom seen elsewhere. So how do we use our newly acquired knowledge (you have been following us these past few months haven’t you?) to plant out and successfully grow those spring and summer beds & pots of plants? How flowering plants work A flowering plant can be perennial, annual, a shrub or even a tree. The most important thing is that they flower. It is necessary for the plant. Flowers produce seeds and seeds produce new plants and this lifecycle enables us to enjoy them each year. There are different ways that flowers have to help the plant regenerate. Flowers can attract insects of different kinds which then pollinate the flower - which in turn helps the plant ‘set’ seed. Some flowers have been modified over the years by plants in order to attract certain types of insects. An example of this is a plant which flowers in the depth of winter and so does
breezemagazine 34
not need to attract bees - which are active only in the summer. This month we take a look at two main types of flowering plants: Summer bedding plants (half hardys) Whilst many will go to their local garden centre and buy these ready for planting it can be great fun to seed your own from packets - and is cheaper as well! Half hardy plants have to be sown either indoors (no light needed until they sprout) or a heated greenhouse, coldframe or shed. Any time around April is ideal but they can be sown a little alter than this as well - it will just mean a slightly shorter growing season that’s all. Simple three inch lightweight plastic pots (even yoghurt pots with drain holes in) containing potting compost will suffice, with one seed in each. Keep the compost slightly moist but not soggy. If any particular pot shows no signs of life (when others have sprouted) then simply pop in another seed as sometimes the odd one will fail - it’s just nature! Now here’s a good tip: cover your little pots with a black bin bag or some other thick black plastic covering, to exclude the light. Do not leave them uncovered until they have sprouted. This way you get nice strong growth later - without the ‘legginess’ that some plants can suffer. You may be wondering which seeds to try at this point. The best way to choose is to look at where you want them in the garden so take a look at any packets which will show you if they will tolerate partial shade (most half hardys like full sun). Why not try some Night Scented Stock where you sit out at night? After your seeds have sprouted and start growing they are then kept somewhere warmish an light (a windowsill is ok) until they get to a larger size after around a month.

breezegardening You will then need to gradually acclimatise them to the cooler conditions which they will meet as fully grown plants. This is known as ‘hardening them off’ and is no more than a gradual introduction for a young plant to harder conditions so it is not killed off by a sudden shock. The way to do this is to place them outside during the day and early evening but bring them back inside at night (either your windowsill or a coldframe/greenhouse). You can buy inexpensive plastic coldframes which keep them warm enough at night outside while they get bigger - or make your own little ‘mini coldframe’ if you wish. As long as the plant is sheltered and covered but has light that’s all that matters - it doesn’t have to be heated at this stage where you will have small plants. If you buy your plants fully grown (bedding plants etc) this is not required but you do have to watch for late frosts. Obviously the same applies if you have grown your own - don’t plant them out until it’s fairly safe to say a ground frost is unlikely. If you are planting into pots you can always bring them under cover if frost is forecast or use some gardeners fleece to cover them. Some of the most popular bedding plants are half-hardy annuals, such as marigolds, busy lizzies, salvias etc. Whichever you choose just enjoy growing a few batches - each a week later than the previous. This way you will have a steady supply of plants to start off in your baskets and tubs with a backup in case of any problems. Your little pots which you sowed them in really come into
breezemagazine 36
their own when planting out - no messing about, just replant them in your chosen position - keep it simple! Most of all just enjoy this fairly easy and really rewarding process of growing your own bedding plants. Have a look at some of the fantastic ranges in seed packets and explore - maybe you will try something you haven’t bothered with previously and really set your garden alight with colour this summer as result of your ‘bedding plant trials’ now? You certainly don’t need to worry about making any expensive mistakes as this is the cheapest way to get maximum flowers in your little bit of paradise! Whichever types of plants you choose just get some going and really enjoy growing your own this year - it’s a fantastic feeling when you see the results of your hard work in bloom later on! Let’s continue next month to explore how we can get our gardens turbo charged with colour this spring and summer - set the scene for those lovely garden get togethers to come!

During this time a quiz booklet was produced and sold for £1.00 a copy, and the result of this will be announced at the beginning of April, so if you have bought a copy please send it in, even partly completed by March 31st, as there are prizes to be won. This should raise a tidy sum for the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre and other Inner Wheel Charities. And then a fashion show was held at Trowell Parish Hall, which was attended by 200 people who were enthralled by the models This raised approximately £1200 for Children in Distress and other Inner Wheel Charities. So this year a lot of hard work and enjoyment for the members of Inner Wheel”.

br Practical Solutions for serious issues What puts you off seeking help through therapy for issues such as stress, anxiety, phobias or depressive states? Is it the thought of prolonged sessions, or deep analysis of your past life? Uncovering events and things you would rather not have uncovered?
