A new look at the over fifties means changes to the way we see ourselves in our ‘golden years’. With a new emphasis on maintaining health and wellbeing into our older years and beyond, there is a growing market for the needs of a new and far more active generation of people who are fifty years and over. From support in checking out local tradesmen to sporting and leisure activities and a greater interest in self care, analysts widely recognise the sea change that has been occurring in the way we all see getting older. Indeed, getting ‘older’ is less seen as an obstacle and more viewed as an opportunity to get out there and try something new! Ones older years are also often a time that we may treat ourselves to those little luxuries that we went without whilst raising a family. Perhaps it is a home revamp and decoration, or an educational course you always promised yourself. Whatever the goal you have in mind here is a guide to help you consider what is possible in these golden years. It is also, of course, often a time for reflection and preparation so that no one is left with difficulties over important matters such as Wills and funeral arrangements. Above all, it’s about taking control over our lives and truly living to the fullest and happiest... Here’s to you in your ‘nifty fifties’....

The ‘British Kite Mark’ is a new campaign launched by the Dental Laboratories Association that aims to offer patients the opportunity to find out where their appliances have been made and whether they comply with UK and EU regulations. The Dental Laboratories Association appreciate that the different levels of regulation and professional requirements can be confusing for patients to understand and therefore have looked to design a logo that at quick glance will help inform the patient that their dental appliance has been manufactured in the UK and meets UK regulatory requirements. All of the dentures provided by Sunshine Denture are manufactured on site at our laboratory in Long Eaton complying with strict regulations in terms of materials used. Plan ahead and make the perfect choice Funeral Pre-payment plans are becoming increasingly popular as people realise the benefits both for themselves and their loved ones. However, choosing the right plan provider is important. Many plans are now taken out by post or even sold door-to-door, which can lead to future difficulties. Before committing yourself, check that your funeral can be carried out by the funeral home of your choice – many plans sold by charities or other third party agents are linked to a particular funeral group, which may not be your preferred choice, or even have a branch in your area. Check also that the plan includes everything you need – many plans include only basic cremation fees, meaning that a Service in Church or burial of cremated remains would lead to additional charges. Finally, check that the administration fees are identifiable – some plans pay high commission levels to the plan seller, so only a proportion of your money is invested towards your funeral. “With almost 20 years’ experience with Perfect Choice Funeral Plans, we at the Eastwood Funeral Partnership are always happy to give advice to anyone thinking of taking out a funeral plan, or concerned that an existing plan doesn’t fit their needs”.
DIY Wills Tips and Traps People writing their own Wills may think they are saving money, but they risk leaving their beneficiaries unwelcome bills later on. Most of us know we ought to make a Will, but some are unwilling to pay professionals to help because they think “it will cost too much”. Some do nothing and will die intestate, whilst others buy a Will form at the Post Office. If you aren’t qualified to draft a Will, be aware that lots can go wrong. Recent cases we’ve seen include someone “signing” a Will on behalf of a physically incapable testator; doubts as to whether the house has been left on trust; and gifts where the amounts were unclear. If a Will is badly drafted, its gifts can fail or the Will be void. Either way, your estate doesn’t pass as you intended. The problems will come to light only after you die. Lawyers have to sort out the mess, which can take ages and cost far more than the cost of getting your solicitor to make the Will in the first place. It doesn’t cost a fortune to get your Will done properly. It won’t be money you’ll ever need for yourself. Think of it as a first instalment of what you’re leaving your chosen beneficiaries. They really won’t mind if it saves them a small fortune in fees, time and worry later on. For help in writing wills and much more, contact Rothera Dowson Solicitors on 0800 158 5316 and speak to Wills specialist Karen Hayward

It shows in your face You heard it before and I say it again ‘if your feet hurt it shows in your face’. Even in mid Summer, it’s not too early to start getting yourself in tip-top condition. Observe and listen to your body. If you don’t put petrol in the car, it will simply shut down. The human body responds similarly, mainly affecting the extremities, toe nails and finger nails. So what better time to begin your new regime? If you are suffering cracked, split, flaking or chipping nails simply won’t grow, they may well be suffering from starvation! Start today! Wear gloves for household chores, especially when using detergents that rob natural oils. Twice a day if you can, rub cuticle cream well in, then gently push back the cuticles. This is a great way of clearing up those ragged bits of skin around the nails by providing them with nourishing oils. Apply rich hand and foot cream using what’s left with a dab for your elbows. Make it a regular discipline and within a few days, you can congratulate yourself on a noticeable improvement. Check your dietary intake which should include plenty of fruit, oily fish and vegetables. Perhaps a multi vitamin boost is appropriate - you could check this out with your GP, especially if you are taking other medicines. Call 0115 939 3662 and book your appointment now!

We use only the best equipment and our trained installers together with a ten year guarantee on workmanship and 25 year on panel output.
If you would like a car port why not have a solar car port producing electricity and getting
This product has been about in industry for many years, now Reset Renewables can install a voltage optimizer in your house saving typically between 9% -13% on your electricity costs.
paid great for those who cannot fit solar to their roofs or don’t want solar on their roofs. Car ports also allow you to get paid for the electricity you produce and electric vehicle charging points can be incorporated.
As a company we are committed to saving energy and the environment. With this in mind we have carefully put together a number of measures that will either produce electricity or save electricity. Below are a number of ways in which Reset Renewables could save considerable amounts of energy and money off your electricity bills some of which with no change to lifestyle. If you have old storage heaters why not change for the new Farho radiators 50% more efficient and 30% cheaper to run, order 4 or more and installation free( as a direct replacement to storage heater) SOLAR PV Solar pv or Photovoltaic panels produce electricity for your home or business. A typical 4 Kw system facing south will produce approximately 3,400 units or Kwh of electricity per year with the feed in tariff and savings you will earn /save over £840 per year this is index linked and householders this is tax free as well. Great investment. LED LIGHTING LED lighting has taken the industry by storm if you were to change 1 LED fluorescent fitting or tube the savings are around 70% If a small shop running 10 light fittings with 4x2ʼ tubes in each we could save you over £250 per year and with electricity prices rising this saving will keep rising and with an LED fitting running 10 hours per day 365 days per year should last over 10 years. ELECTRIC RADIATORS We are Farho Electric Radiator approved installers. These radiators are energy efficient with a saving of 30% on storage heaters. We can give a cost of running on an annual basis this is carried out with a heating survey all free of charge they are a great replacement for storage heaters, and even better for conventional electric heating. All this and a 10 year guarantee on the appliance and no leaking as with traditional water filled piped heating system. VOLTAGE OPTIMIZATION The incoming voltage into your property is around 240v but the equipment works at an optimal voltage of 220v so the over voltage dissipates as heat or vibration. A simple to install voltage optimization devise regulates the voltage to around 220 volts, reducing the electricity wasted. Savings of up to 17% and a payback of 2-3 years.
breezemagazine 12
The voltage optimization works well domestically and commercially. When using lighting and appliances ie: fridges, in the case of convenience shops you have a number of fridge units and lighting on between 12-16 hours per day. Small changes could potentially save hundreds of pounds per year. Our core business is trying to lower our customers energy bills at a time when the price of fuel is going up, all of these products are long lasting so a small investment will reap rewards over the coming years.
WHAT WE COULD SAVE YOU EACH YEAR:
• Solar PV: save over £840 per year • LED Lighting: save over £250 per year • Electric Radiators: save up to 30% in heating • Voltage Optimization: save up to 17% in electricity use and improve the life of your household electrical items eg televisions, audio, fridge etc

breeze appeal Local Notts resident celebrates 15 years of volunteering at ChildLine
Gillian Young remembers well her first shift at ChildLine Nottingham more than fifteen years ago. It was a time when calls from children and young people were written long hand and notes filed away, when volunteers only received calls from local children in the area and when the internet was something only a few knew of. Fast forward 15 years and ChildLine not only receives calls from young people in the Nottinghamshire area, but from all over the UK. Technology has also advanced, with counsellors now trained in one-to-one online chats with children. The ways in which children and young people contact ChildLine may have changed but the issues young people contact the helpline about remain broadly the same. “When I first joined ChildLine all those years ago, I was nervous about taking my first few calls, but the training I had made me feel confident to be able listen to children and young people and to help them with their concerns. The supervisors are always on hand to help and advise and we always have time for a team briefing before and after shift which always helps.” ChildLine service manager, Gaynor Birnie, is grateful to Gillian for dedicating so much of her time to helping children and young people. Gaynor said: “I’d like to thank Gillian for volunteering for ChildLine for 15 years. It is a great achievement and we couldn’t keep ChildLine open for children without all of our volunteers’ amazing commitment and dedication.” Gillian feels rewarded by helping children and young people with their problems or concerns and encourages others to consider volunteering. She said: “People should think about volunteering at ChildLine as it’s a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and help and support many children and young people who may not have anyone else to turn to. It can sometimes be a lifeline for many young people.” For many children with a problem, ChildLine is the only place they feel they can turn. Last year, ChildLine counsellors at the Nottingham base in Old Basford carried out over 22,000 counselling interactions with young people from across the UK, either by phone or via its online service*. Since the service was launched by Esther Rantzen 25 years ago, ChildLine has counselled almost 2.7 million children across the UK. The base in Nottingham currently has 125 volunteers but around 75 more are needed to help them to answer more calls from children and young people. Volunteers are especially needed for weekend and evening shifts. Gaynor said: “More counselling volunteers are urgently required in Nottingham to help ChildLine reach more children and young people who are in need of help and support. “ The Nottingham base is holding an open day event on 16 August for anyone interested in finding out more about volunteering. For details please contact volunteer co-ordinator Cat Wynne on 0207 539 6016 or email cwynne@nspcc.org.uk.

Schools flock to join in ChildLine’s Big Birthday celebrations More than 150 schools across the country have already signed up to be part of ChildLine’s Big Birthday week between 8th and 12th October, so why not join in the fun and get involved too! The event, to mark ChildLine’s 25th anniversary, will see primary and secondary schools and groups across Nottinghamshire take part in a host of fun and quirky fundraising activities to celebrate the milestone and raise £250,000. As part of the celebrations, ChildLine is hoping to break the Guinness World Record™ for the most greetings on a single birthday card, by inviting every school that fundraises to send in their greeting for inclusion in the giant card. ChildLine founder Esther Rantzen is backing the Guinness World Record™ attempt and urging local schools to show their support too, she said: “When ChildLine was launched back on October 30th 1986, it received 50,000 attempted calls on the first night from desperate young people who, until then, had no way of asking for help. “Now, 25 years on we’re still providing comfort and protection for children and young people who contact us by phone and online. But, of course, we need to raise funds to pay for the service. Taking part in the ChildLine Big Birthday week is a fantastic way for schools to show their support, helping us to continue our service for another 25 years and more.” Taking part in ChildLine’s Big Birthday week is simple. Mindfulness / Resource based / solution focus therapy Many people can be put off by the thought of going to therapy for long periods and churning over distressing past events they would rather just forget. Local leading psychotherapist Martin Smith seeks to help people move on with life by drawing on resources they already have or teaching skills that they actually need. Working from various resource and solution focused therapy approaches Martin helps people to move on effectively by getting them to realise the skills they already have or can learn. This can then help them deal with a range of issues including stress, depression, anxiety, sleep, relationship issues and more. One of the approaches he uses is Mindfulness, a practice that is growing in popularity due to its proven ability to help people with all aspects of their lives. Martin is conducting a short two-hour introduction to Mindfulness in September on Thursday 6th from 6.30pm and also on the Saturday 8th from 10.30am. If you would like to learn more about this excellent approach to better mental health and well-being call or email Martin on 07 973 410 010 or itctherapy@aol.com to book as places are limited. You can also contact Martin for personal one-to-one therapy and coaching - appointments are available during the day, evenings and weekends to suit your needs and commitments.

breeze appeal DIVAS WANTED FOR CHARITY WALK Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People is urging the ladies of the east Midlands to join hundreds of women from across the county and take part in the fabulous fundraising event ‘Divas in the Dark’ next month to help support the mums of the life-limited children the hospice supports each and every day. The five mile women-only moonlight walk around Loughborough University campus will begin at 10pm on Saturday, September 8, starting and finishing at Holywell Park. The evening - which kicks off with registration at 8pm - will be jam-packed with entertainment, and will include the services of hairdressers, nail technicians and make-up artists, who will be onsite to ‘diva up’ the ladies who get involved. As well as the pampering there will be plenty of stalls to purchase gifts and treats. In addition, a midnight feast will be waiting for everybody on their return to the park. And, to top it all off, each lovely lady that takes part in the event will receive a commemorative medal and a complementary goody bag. Katie Baxter, Community and Events Manager at Rainbows said: “Divas in the Dark aims to raise money in a fun and exciting way in support of the mums of the children that visit Rainbows. Fundraising efforts make such a huge difference both the children of Rainbows and their families, so get your girls together and join other divas from across the East Midlands and have some fun.” Divas in the Dark is a fantastic opportunity for mums, sisters, aunties and girlfriends to get together and help raise vital funding for Loughboroughbased hospice. Local mum Alison Birkin has been supported by Rainbows since her daughter Chloe was diagnosed at the age of nine with idiopathic dystonia, a brain disorder which confines her to a wheelchair. She said, “Rainbows has done so much for me and Chloe, we really couldn’t have lived without them. They have improved the quality of her life and have given me the chance to make the most of the time that I spend with her.” “I am so grateful for all of those who help fundraise for Rainbows; the money really does make a huge difference to the lives of the families that visit the hospice. ‘Divas in the Dark’ is going to be great fun and we are all looking forward to it raising some money for Rainbows and being pampered along the way!” Those who successfully manage to raise £100 or more in sponsorship will automatically be entered into a prize draw and will get the chance to win a bundle of diva goodies. For further information on the event or to register, please visit www.rainbows.co.uk.

breezewhat’s on After a hugely successful first appearance at Cotgrave Welfare Club earlier this year, the Henley Farrell Big Band is making a return visit so that you can once again dance the night away to the sounds of a live big band as they bring the magnificent sounds of swing back to the area. The band plays music to suit all the dance styles featured on the BBC’s hit show Strictly Come Dancing, including Quicksteps, Waltzes, Foxtrots, Jives, Rumbas, Sambas and Cha-cha-chas. The night will also feature old time classics and sequence dances such as Barn Dances, Veletas, Square Tangos and many more. You can listen and dance at Cotgrave Welfare Club, Woodview, Cotgrave, Nottingham, NG12 3PJ on Saturday 6th October and 3rd November. Doors open at 7:00pm with music for dancing through until 10:30pm. The venue provides a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere with a large, sprung dance floor, ample parking and good value refreshments. Tickets are priced at £7 and are available on the door. Ron Pearce, a dance enthusiast, said of his first experience of the band: “This was the first time we have attended one of your gigs ... We recommended you to all our friends at a ballroom class we attend and a group of 10 of us came along; all were very impressed.” The Band’s dance nights are attended by a wide range of people and are enjoyed by experienced and beginner dancers as well as those who are young or young at heart. The music is, of course, also great to listen to and a typical night will include well known classics from Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé and many more stars of the Big Band world from the past and present.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT THE HENLEY FARRELL BIG BAND The Henley Farrell Big Band was formed in March 1990 by Michelle Henley and Tony Farrell who were seeking an opportunity to further develop their love of big band music and trumpet playing. Michelle and Tony had met whilst playing in a local youth band and when big band leader Paul Du Cane was disbanding his group he kindly donated half of his music library to the pair who used this as a platform to start their own big band. Rehearsal premises were found, musician friends were eager to play, new arrangements were added and PA equipment was acquired. Eventually a full big band complement was achieved and The Henley Farrell Big Band gave its first public appearance in 1991.
breezemagazine 32
The line up of 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, 5 Saxes, Piano, Bass, Drums, singers and optional Guitar is in keeping with the traditional bands from the swing era. The band now plays a wide range of music for all types of events including conferences, weddings, 40's theme nights, jazz concerts, Rat Pack nights etc. The band has appeared with some of UK 's top musicians including Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams, Nathan Bray and has performed at many venues across the East Midlands and in recent years, as their fame has spread across the country. The Henley Farrell Big Band is non-profit making and also supports local charities and worthwhile causes.

breezegardening As our knowledge of gardening increases we will still find problems which look set to destroy our good work. This month we look at pests to help us treat and care for our plants. Slugs and snails: Nearly all gardens suffer from slugs and snails and since they damage a wide range of plants it is not surprising that they cause most consternation amongst gardeners. But how do you know if you‘ve been a victim of the plant eating type of slug? Here is what you will see: leaves eaten from the margin or holes (in larger leaves). Young shoots/seedlings are often eaten right down to the stem - or even completely! Root crops (such as potatos) can appear hollowed out. There are, of course, the usual slime trails left behind on plants, the surface of soil and other surfaces where they have moved. How do we prevent this most common of garden adversaries?
breezemagazine 34
Prevention/treatment: • Improving drainage; and soil structure is important as slugs prefer wet and lumpy ground. • Digging; rotavating and raking helps disturb slugs and their eggs within the soil. It also conditions the soil to dry out on the surface, which slugs don’t like. Well-prepared soil will enable seeds to get going and grow away more quickly, minimising slug or snail damage. • Natural friends; There are many creatures that feed on slugs and snails such as: frogs, toads, ground beetles, hedgehogs and many species of birds. Why not make your garden a friendly place for these beneficial creatures? Prove a variety of wildlife habitats and nesting boxes, for example: log piles, fruiting shrubs, a pond and mulches. • Inspect vulnerable plants regularly; and remove any snails that are seen - using rubber gloves can make this job just about bearable! Traps: Various designs are available for all areas of the garden, either purchased or home made, free-standing or that can be buried in soil. All will require some form of bait beer or a supplied attractant. Choose a shallow container, leaving a rim 2cm above soil level to discourage beetles and other creatures from falling into home-made buried traps. Lure and destroy! Use roof tiles or half grapefruit skins. Place on the soil near vulnerable plants to provide a shelter for the slugs and snails in the day. Inspect frequently and remove any pests found in residence. This method can be used to clear an area before planting by providing lettuce leaves as bait under the traps. Barriers: These consist of either a physical barrier or sensory repellent to deter slugs and snails getting to your plants. There are many types, either home-made or bought products are available: • Bottle cloches; cut the bottom off a clear plastic bottle and press it firmly into the soil around a vulnerable seedling/plant. • Slug collars; plastic rings with a lip to. Makes life difficult for a slimy crossing!, Placed around individual plants e.g lettuce. • Grit/rough granules; mineral products that either form a sharp, gritty repellent barrier or that suck the moisture from the slime that slugs and snails exude. • Spray repellent; made from yucca plant extract, you this spray onto surfaces and around plants. Needs renewing after heavy rain, but useful in awkward corners as another tactic. • Copper tape/ring/impregnated mats; copper gives a natural electric charge that repels the pest. The tape is wound around pots and legs of greenhouse staging. Mats can be used around plants or planted through. • Bran; slugs like to eat bran and it swells inside them, thus reducing their appetite for your plants.

breezegardening OTHER COMMON PESTS: Vine weevil
A beetle that attacks a wide range of plants, both indoors and outdoors. Container plants especially vulnerable. Container plants, outdoors or under cover, are targets of the pesky vine weevil grubs. Plants growing in the open ground are less susceptible, although the grubs can kill strawberries, primulas, polyanthus, Sedum, and Heuchera. The adult beetles feed on the foliage of many herbaceous plants and shrubs, for example Rhododendron, evergreen Euonymus, Hydrangea, Epimedium, Bergenia, Primula and strawberry. Here is what you will see: Irregular-shaped notches in leaf margins during the summer. The white legless grubs are plump and have light brown heads. They are up to 1cm long. They are often found among the roots. Plants wilt and die during autumn to spring if grubs have been busy devouring the roots. Prevention/treatment:
Trap; Adults can be trapped with sticky barriers, such as Agralan Insect Barrier Glue, placed around pots or on greenhouse staging. Encourage natural enemies: as with slugs - encourage the same type of wildlife. • Chemical control; Plants not used for food purposes and grown in containers can be treated with acetamiprid (Scotts Bug Clear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer) or thiacloprid (Provado Vine Weevil Killer 2). You cannot use these treatments with crops. With vine weevil, gardeners have to keep up their guard because stopping treatment after the apparent disappearance of the pest can allow numbers to build up again. Powdery mildew
Produces a white powdery coating on the surface of plant leaves and fruits. Here is what you will see: Plants look distorted, unsightly and growth begins to falter. Plants can also commonly display dark brown or bright yellow spots. It is lethal to plants if not treated, and affects both ornamental and horticultural (edible) plants). Many garden plants can be susceptible to powdery mildew, including strawberries, apples, peaches, plums, gooseberries, rhododendrons, roses, honeysuckle, asters, peas, brassicas and cucumbers, melons and marrows, as well most ornamental plants. This disease is a type of fungi that produce a 'powdery' effect on the surfaces of plants. Each species of powdery mildew has it’s own favoured plant that it lives on and an attack on one species of plant will generally not spread to another, unrelated plant. Prevention/treatment: Chemical control: Myclobutanil, Penconazole, Flutriafol Sulphur as a dust, or as a liquid spray. Other action; Prune out infected branches or shoots as soon as symptoms appear. Work slowly to avoid shaking spores on to healthy shoots - put the diseased material into a container and then burn the infected material. Because of their spores, powdery mildew can survive the winter on infected material. Get rid of any sick-looking perennials at autumn time. Clean up thoroughly in the greenhouse with a garden disinfectant. Prevention; Ensure plants have adequate water, container plants especially as they don’t have access to ground water. Apply organic matter in autumn and applying mulches in spring to retain moisture. Don’t overcrowd plants and thin out crowded growth to give good air circulation. Avoid giving susceptible plants too much nitrogen-rich fertiliser because this encourages sappy growth and this is more susceptible to fungi.

breeze what’s on The Beeston Wildlife Group is holding its first indoor meeting of the season on Monday September 17th 2012 at the Trent Vale Infants School, Trent Road, Beeston Rylands NG9 1LP. 7.30pm £2.00 Adults, £1.00 Children. The evening will have an illustrated talk by Nigel Slater about 'Extinctions, Re-introductions and Aliens'. It tells the story about animals becoming extinct in Britain and how man has tried to re-introduce some of them back into the wild. “Sometimes we get it horribly wrong when we release alien species that cause havoc amongst our native wildlife. Some of the species looked at include: Wolf, Grey Squirrel, Large Blue Butterfly, Rabbit and Japanese Knot weed. You will be amazed how many animals are not genuine natives to Britain”. Please contact Bill Wheatley for more details 0115 9250208. Everyone is welcome, refreshments are included in the price, you are sure to have an informative and entertaining evening.
Finally it’s the summer, breeze promotion time for a break! It’s the summer holidays and many of us will be looking forward to a well-deserved trip away. However, the experts at Churchcroft Vets are reminding everyone that just as we need to prepare ourselves for a holiday (sun screen, passport, good book to read), we also need to get everything in place for our pets. Depending on what your best friend is doing whilst you are away there are various areas to consider. George at Churchcroft says: “If your pet is travelling too, you need to consider any special needs arising relating to the journey itself. And, since there are different problems around the world (and even just around the U.K.), you need to cover for any local problems you might encounter. Disease prevention measures can include Vaccinations, Flea treatment, Worm control, Tick prevention and other steps to avoid exotic diseases that might be encountered. Depending on where your pet is going, the risks will vary and, since every animal is unique, the best solution for your pet varies according to their individual needs. Travel concerns to be avoided include travel sickness, stress and heat stroke (which can be a major issue since pets can’t sweat to cool down). A long journey with a car-sick dog can be a traumatic ordeal for all concerned! In addition, don’t forget to check that any documentation that might be needed is up to date (e.g. Passport, Vaccination record card). It’s terrible to experience that sinking feeling when you discover your holiday is going to be delayed or cancelled because of a simple administrative oversight! Finally, if your pet takes regular medication or a particular food, you’ll need to get in sufficient stocks to last you through the holiday period.” Don’t leave it to the last minute! Contact Churchcroft Vets on 0115 922 4855 to ensure the best protection for your best friend so that you can both have a relaxing holiday.

breeze what’s on Erewash Musical Society perform ‘Chess’ at Duchess Theatre, Chatsworth Centre, Long Eaton 1st – 6th October. Following on from his West End success’, Lyricist Tim Rice teamed up with Abba’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus to write the musical ‘Chess’. The show features some wonderful melodies which the cast of Erewash Musical Society are thoroughly enjoying learning, under the capable baton of Musical Director James Rayner. Within the context of the Cold War struggle between the USA and Russia, the story involves a romantic triangle between two top Chess players and a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. The show begins in Merano, Italy as the country welcomes competitors to the World Chess tournament. First to arrive is the brash American Freddie Trumper to be played (in his first principal role for the society) by Phil Deakin. Accompanying Freddie is his assistant and girlfriend Florence, played by Lynette Stevenson (who previously played the female lead in EMS’ NODA Award nominated production of ‘Jekyll and Hyde’). Lynette is thrilled to be appearing in her favourite show and recreating the role originally played by Elaine
Paige. Florence soon meets and falls in love with the romantic Russian champion Anatoly Sergiseki (played by Grant Walker). Chess is also Grant’s favourite show and he is looking forward to singing the hauntingly beautiful song ‘Anthem’. As the Chess Tournament travels the world, the 2nd Act opens with Freddie enjoying the experiences in ‘One night in Bangkok’. Anatoly’s estranged wife Svetlana (played by Kellie Pearson) arrives during the pre-tournament press conference, further complicating matters. Svetlana sings the emotionally moving song ‘Someone Else’s Story’ and later duets with Florence in ‘I know him so well’, where the two women each contemplate their individual relationship with Anatoly. Probably one of the best known songs from the show, ‘I know him so well’ was a chart hit for Elaine Paige and Barbara Dixon in 1985. Keeping a sharp eye over the Chess game proceedings is the Arbiter or referee (played by Kevin Riley), while wheeler dealers Alexander Molokov (played by Mike Seed) and Walter de Courcey (played by Martin Mould) play their own game by manipulating the various characters within the story, for propaganda purposes. Fabulous singing, a Chessboard stage and filmed sequences mean that ‘Chess’ will be a truly new and exciting experience for Long Eaton audiences. Re-uniting the successful ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ Production team consisting of Producer Nigel Taylor, Musical Director James Rayner and Choreographer Laurie Trott, together with a chorus of singers and dancers, ‘Chess’ is sure to be a spectacle for both the eyes and ears, and a show not to be missed. ‘Chess’ will be performed at the Duchess Theatre, Chatsworth Centre, West Gate, Long Eaton on the evenings of Monday 1st – Saturday 6th October 2013 starting at 7:30pm and a matinee performance at 2:30pm on Saturday 6th October. Tickets can be purchased from Chatsworth Centre on Saturday mornings, booked online at erewashmusicalsociety.co.uk or via the Box Office on 01332 875350.

When You Wish Upon a Star grants Wishes for children between the ages of 2-16 years old, who have a life threatening illness. This year the charity is celebrating 21 years of granting Wishes to some very brave and courageous children. In the last 21 years that charity have granted over 14,500 wishes All children have Wishes, but for these children and their families that Wish is so much more precious. The highlight of the Charity’s year is December when hundreds of children are taken on a truly magical trip of a lifetime to meet the real Father Christmas in Lapland. To see their little rosy cheeks, red noses and a huge smile on their face when they meet Father Christmas is truly amazing.
