Explore two brand new galleries at Framework Knitters Museum, Ruddington, and see the history of the knitting industry come to life Nestled in a quiet cul-de-sac in the pretty village of Ruddington, you’ll find an unexpected delight; The Framework Knitters Museum is a time capsule to a time when Nottingham was the lace making centre of Europe. Machine knitting was invented in Nottinghamshire in 1589 by William Lee, and the knitting frame made it possible for workers to produce knitted goods 100 times faster than when knitting by hand. In July 2014, the museum launched two brand new galleries, including the UK’s first gallery entirely dedicated to the Luddite revolt, which started in Nottingham before spreading across the country. As part of the redevelopment of the museum, special effects have been added to bring the museum to life for the visitor, and a new sense of drama and interaction will mean groups will get to experience the site in a completely unique way. Perfect for adults and children alike; explore the new Luddite Gallery and unearth facts about the bygone era and examine the conditions that surrounded the uprising. While the new Machine Room will chart the development of the industry, explore the birth of lace, and encourage the ongoing debate about the production of cheap clothing. Watch live demonstrations on the framework knitting machines and marvel at the historic hosiery display – including Queen Victoria’s stockings! Make sure to also pay a visit to the onsite shop, which supports young and local textiles makers, and pick up exclusive local craft gifts. Whether it is with health and well-being or more practical issues such as insurance and will making. Ageing need not be as it used to be - something to be feared. The way in which older people behave and dress has changed dramatically in the past twenty years. Whilst nobody wishes to appear to be trying to be younger than they really (well maybe a little younger!) it is accepted without question that both men and women can go on enjoying positive and constructive lives well into their sixties and seventies. Better medical care has altered life prospects and given those who once could only accept the inevitable a new lease of life. Hip, knee and other joint replacements have taken the dread out of infirmity for many. meaning that sports and hobbies can be enjoyed well into the twilight years. Here some local businesses to help along the way - enjoy life the way you were meant to! "Bowls is a game enjoyed countrywide by many thousands of ladies and gentlemen” says Roger Holwell, Chairman of Nottingham Indoor Bowls Centre. “It allows both gentle exercise, and also becomes an absorbing pastime as ones bowling skills develop.” he adds. Maybe your only previous bowls experience was just a fun game on holiday at the seaside? You may just have seen the experts making it look easy on TV? Whatever your first introduction to bowls, you now have a chance to try it for yourself during their free Open Week in September. You will find the Nottingham Indoor Bowls Centre on Beechdale Road, off the Ring Road, past the Baths, fork right at the island, then 400 yards up on the left. The Centre opened in 1981 and was the first indoor centre in the Nottingham area. The members and staff there welcomes all abilities, especially newcomers to the game and there are facilities for bowling by the disabled. “Playing is inexpensive and for the newcomer, bowls can be hired at minimal cost. Whether you prefer to play casually and enjoy a drink with friends, or to join in the Club's leagues, competitions and interclub friendly matches, you are assured of a warm welcome, and the opportunity to make new lasting friendships". explains Roger. Fill in the coupon on the left to get you free taster session. Tel 0115 929 6865 for more information about the centre.

Young at heart? Inside, we feel just like we were thirty and forty years ago. Age is just an attitude of mind. Until we look in the mirror … and as they say ‘time waits for no-one’. Like it or not we are all getting older. Perhaps August is the month for us to act our age and finally get our affairs in order. Make that Will. Tell people where it’s stored. Leave some cash to a good cause or two. Sign some Powers of Attorney – one for finance and property and one for health and welfare. Start planning our funerals. Perhaps write a letter to that person we let down or fell out with many years ago. All over nothing, really. But do make sure you deal with a firm of local solicitors you can trust. Such as Rothera Dowson. Our experienced qualified lawyers will give you a free second opinion if you’re concerned as to whether your existing arrangements are up to scratch. It will be so much easier to “encourage” family and friends to do the same after we’ve done it ourselves. And before you can say Jack Robinson (remember him?) you’ll be back to living life as a bright young thing, younger at heart than ever before. For more information please contact Karen Hayward at Rothera Dowson solicitors on 0800 158 5316.

Would you like to help improve the quality of life for people with dementia? Why not attend one of the Dementia friendly communities workshops...
Our experience of supporting people who have been diagnosed with dementia confirms available research suggesting that the way dementia affects each individual can be very different. This means that it is very difficult to predict the way the disease will affect an individual or the stage people are at. What is known however is that even at late stages a person can understand what is going on around them. This in turn means that many people with dementia can continue to live a relatively “normal” life as long as there is adequate support available, not just at home but in the community. This is where dementia friendly communities can play a major part. The concept is simple: to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and help them to become active members of the community. Making it happen involves bringing together every part of a community – health services, social care, transport, local businesses, charities and voluntary groups, the police, the fire brigade and local people. At Home Instead in Nottingham, we have developed a comprehensive training program for our CAREGivers (12+ hours of training) which covers not only the details of what Dementia is and associated symptoms and behaviours but more important, practical advice and techniques that help our CAREGivers manage the behaviours and help those suffering from the disease to continue to enjoy a good quality of life.

Pictured Above: Firefighters at the Ollerton training Centre attending one of the workshops.
Having developed the training programme for our CAREGivers we felt that we should go a step further and customise it (total of 4 hours over 2 sessions) in order to deliver the training as free workshops for families of those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other Dementias or anybody who would like to find out more about the disease. It has been further modified and delivered to the Nottingham fire brigade (over 25 firefighters trained) as well as local shops and businesses. The Hall and grounds are beautiful and walking into the property you are greeted immediately by the friendly reception staff who then whisk you away to be checked in so you don't miss a minute of what turned out to be a wonderful day. It's one of those places that you have to visit to appreciate. A lot of very hard work must go into creating such a wonderful atmosphere. Everywhere you looked people of all ages were really enjoying themselves whether chilling out by the excellent sized pool, having lunch in the lovely well run dining room, and we cannot begin to tell you how fantastic the spa was - we never wanted to leave! Everything about the place was immaculate but for us Ragdale Hall is all about being able to chill out and that's exactly what everyone was doing. Full praise must be given to all the staff who were all so friendly, but never obstrusive, from the beauticians to the lovely ladies who worked in the clothes and gift shops, and our only complaint was that it was impossible to sample all that was on offer in only one day! Sunshine Denture – Making the East Midlands Smile Many people find they need dentures as they go through life, and most of us have probably met someone whose false teeth don’t fit very well. They may have difficulty eating and their whole appearance may be affected with sagging facial muscles that make them look older. Sunshine Denture, in Long Eaton is home to highly experienced Clinical Dental Technician Roddy Patterson. Roddy believes there is a better way to treat denture patients. The look of the dentures created by Roddy are influenced by age, personality and gender, an innovative patient based approach which underpins the whole of our practice’s ethos. As well as restoring the smile, Sunshine Denture complete dentures also offer a dual effect by correcting the proportions of the face adding volume so denture wearers achieve a more natural, youthful look. At Sunshine Denture Clinic, patients will be treated directly by Roddy, who also makes the dentures himself to ensure the result is nothing less than perfect. Roddy says, “Wearing dentures shouldn’t have to be an awkward experience. Our team will do everything they can to help patients feel self-assured about their denture care”. breeze appeal Time to whip out the knitting needles and get crafty Age UK and innocent launch the Big Knit to raise vital funds for older people Age UK Notts is calling on nimble-fingered knitters to whip out their wool and needles and create little woolly hats for Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit and help older people keep warm, safe and well in winter. Now in its 11th year, The Big Knit returns and budding milliners across the UK are being called upon to get inventive and knit miniature woolly hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles, which will be sold in stores nationwide from February 2015. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, innocent will donate 25p to help Age UK fund national and local winter projects. Age UK Notts is calling on local knitters to get as many hats as possible to them by 31st October 2014 and needs knitters and those wanting to give it a go of all ages to help make this a reality. Each year, as many as 25,000 older people in the UK die because of the cold. With over a decade of support from knitters up and down the country, The Big Knit has raised vital funds to support local and national winter projects to help older people keep warm in winter. Last year alone, more than a million hats were lovingly created, with designs including a giant squid, fruit, soldiers, peas in a pod, cupcakes and an ice cream cone topped with a classic flake. Mick Tinkler, Chief Executive at Age UK Notts, said: “Winter can be a really difficult time of the year for many older people, so it’s really important that local knitters get behind The Big Knit to help raise funds for local winter projects. We need knitters in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire to help us create lots of miniature hats so that we can run services like our Winter Warmth project which helps keep older people warm and healthy during the colder seasons.” Jamie Sterry, innocent drinks, said: “Last year, dedicated knitters notched up a record number of little hats to celebrate over a decade of The Big Knit, which we hope can be reached again this year. The Big Knit is a fantastic way to get creative, knit a little hat to adorn an innocent smoothie bottle and raise money for Age UK to help older people stay warm in winter. We’re massively grateful to everyone who joins in and helps make this year’s campaign a huge success.” Knitters can contact Age UK Notts to get a free hat pattern. For those who don’t fancy making a hat themselves, wool and needles can be donated to [insert address] to help others reach the target, or a £3 donation can be made to Age UK Notts by texting ‘AGED05 £3’ to ‘70070’ For more information on The Big Knit contact Age UK Notts on 0115 844 0011 or log onto www.ageuk.org.uk/notts Please send completed hats to Age UK Notts at Bradbury House, 12 Shakespeare Street, Nottingham, NG1 4FQ.

Thinking of separating or divorcing but worried about cost?
1. Due to legal aid cuts, how can I afford to get divorced? We offer fixed fees for the majority of divorces so that you know in advance exactly how much it will cost and can budget accordingly. This is because if the Respondent does not reply or defends the divorce then the fixed fees would increase! Dependent upon your income, you may be able to apply for an exemption from the court fees. 2. Do you offer fixed fees? We can offer fixed fees in relation to some other matters such as children and property issues too. These will depend on the circumstances of your particular case. We realise that you need to know how much your case is going to cost and will give detailed estimates whenever possible. We will discuss your costs in detail at every step. 3. Would it be possible for me to pay in instalments or pay as I go? Either of these options are available. Form some people “pay as you go is an attractive idea. You may wish to represent yourself but need advice on specific aspects of your case as it proceeds. We are happy to offer this service. If you wish to instruct us more formally, monthly payments are something we can arrange in many cases. 4. What is mediation? Mediation allows separating couples to try to make decisions and reach agreement about the various aspects of their separation. Our specially trained mediator, Pat Sallis, supports and guides you through this process. Legal aid is still available for this subject to your financial situation. If you do not qualify for legal aid, the sessions are charged for separately. The number of sessions needed will vary from case to case. We offer a free 30 minute consultation in which we can discuss the different options available to you and give some initial advice.

When financial trouble hits, it’s easy to feel alone. It can seem like no one can help or that no one wants to. Local debt counselling charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) really can help and hundreds of people call each week to begin their journey towards financial freedom.
against poverty Experience has shown that there is always a way out and no debt is too big or too small to deal with. In fact, if you are experiencing debt problems then you can get free, expert advice without even leaving your house. CAP visits people in their own homes, negotiates with creditors and supports people right up until they are debt free. On top of this, the whole service is free of charge and available to anyone regardless of age, faith, gender or background. One CAP client from Nottingham said, “It all started when my husband became ill and had to leave work. I felt it was his fault we were in debt because he'd taken out a loan against the house but not told me. I felt very ashamed and embarrassed about it all. We eventually lost the house when it was repossessed on 22 December. I felt as if we had lost everything. “Our two youngest boys were devastated, although they didn't like to show it. I tried to make one meal a day so the boys had something good to eat. We ate a lot of toast. If there was nothing to eat, we didn't eat. It was tough. Things continued to get worse; neither of us were sleeping properly, and I still blaming my husband, saying it was his fault we were in debt. “I picked up a CAP leaflet and eventually got up the courage to call. Our first meeting was very professional. They told us what CAP could do and went through our finances. It is a Christian organisation but they said that we didn’t have to be Christians to use them (we weren’t Christians). Now we no longer have debt worries. It has all gone, with the help of CAP. The best thing about what CAP did for us bring me and my husband back together. They are an amazing organisation.” In the UK, there are 260 CAP Debt Centres and three of these are in Nottingham. This means that local people can access the service, which is recommended by TV’s Money Saving Expert, Martin Lewis. Nottingham CAP Centre Manager, George Russell said, “Every week we see people who think that there is no way out of their money problems and every week we offer them a solution that really works. If you are struggling with debt then there is hope. We can help you.” To find out more, call Christians Against Poverty’s freephone number 0800 328 0006 or visit www.capuk.org

BEESTON CAMERA CLUB 60 YEARS OLD AND STILL SNAPPING AWAY Beeston Camera Club first met on Wednesday 6th January 1955 in Beeston library when a group of photography enthusiasts decided to get together to share their hobby. From those simple beginnings the club has grown and continues to provide a regular opportunity for photographers to get together, pick up new ideas and techniques, chat together and share their love of taking pictures. The club has seen many changes in its 60 year history, the most significant being the move to digital photography, but the subjects that interest members from landscape, portraits, sport, transport and travel haven’t changed. One of the founder members was Harold Smith, father of the fashion designer Paul Smith and he passed on his love of photography to his son. Of the original camera enthusiasts who set up the club Godfrey Price is still a member. Various Beeston venues have hosted the club since its beginnings but the Annual Exhibition has been held every year back in their first home Beeston library. What’s on this season? Club evenings include inspiring photo talks from enthusiasts and professionals, competitions and above all the chance to share an enthusiasm for taking pictures. For the season from September 2014-April 2015 some of the highlights include a talk from Des Ong professional wildlife photographer, the landscape photogaphy of Wayne Brittle, and the regular showing of the best pictures from the North and East Midlands Photographic Federation’s exhibition. The club is also delighted to welcome Adrian and Jane Lines in April. They are members of one of the country’s leading camera clubs, Wigan 10, and regularly win awards in both national and international competitions. Points mean prizes Competitions form a popular part of the club’s activities with independent judges coming in to rate members’ work. Regular monthly competitons have four categories, colour digital images, black and white digital images, colour prints and black and white prints. There is also a digital image only competition when entries have to fit in a choice of four out of six themes, including subjects such as Seaside, Glass, Shadows and Flying. At the end of the year trophies are awarded to the member with the best overall scores in each category. The club also takes part in regional competitions and last year was delighted to get through to the finals of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain print competition. Come and join in New members are always welcome, and can attend the first few evening meetings for free before deciding to join. Subscriptions for the year are £37 for adults, £24 concessions and £52 for a couple. The club’s Diamond Jubilee Season starts on Thursday September 4th and the club will then meet every Thursday until the end of April apart from a break for Christmas. Meetings are held at the British Legion, 16 Hall Croft in Beeston and start at 8pm. More information on the website www.beestoncameraclub.co.uk or please email enquiries@beestoncameraclub.co.uk.

Losing weight is extra easy!! Rob Marshall is 26 and attends Jo’s group in Stapleford, so far he has lost 3st 4lb. Rob says, he had been aware of Slimming World but never thought he would join as he had a stereo typical view of weight loss groups (ie Little Britain) but his mom was already a member so he & younger brother James went along to join her and he is so glad he did! I would try to lose weight at home but give up after 3 days, doing the extra easy plan really works as I love food! Nothing is banned, so if I want chocolate I have it and count it in my syns. Going to group each week really helps and hearing everyone’s stories makes me feel that we are all in it together. I have made important changes, cutting out all the rubbish, kebabs, pizzas, crisps, doughnuts now I am loving the Slimming World recipes, but don’t feel as if l’m missing out as l still have my favourite meals using the new “Fakeaway” Book. I used to be really lazy but now I attend the gym a few times a week. I am enjoying my weight loss journey, so to anyone with any doubts about joining I would say try it and you will see results! The real challenge is helping those people who have this sudden change of heart during their 30s to understand that they don’t have to make drastic changes – or even be put off doing anything about their health worries for fear of being unable to cope with a strict new regime. That adopting a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to mean swapping your favourite foods for lettuce leaves and carrot sticks or counting calories and measuring out portion sizes or committing to endless agonising hours at the gym or immediately setting out to train for a marathon. Food Optimising helps Slimming World members to make small changes to the way that they shop, cook and eat that make a big difference to both their waistline and the way they feel – indeed, how many slimmers tell us they feel less sluggish and have more energy since they started Food Optimising?

Searing August A heatwave may be on the cards for this August so let’s be on our guard!
August can be a bit draining on your garden if we have long warm spell (as most of us would hope for!). Many plants we may have put in earlier in the season are starting to wind down by now as they come to the end of their growing life. This is perfectly natural and why we learn when to plant things so that we get a nice even spread of growth and colour, along with visiual interest from plant structures, all the way through the year as far as possible. Improve existing plants: • Deadhead spent flower heads (promotes more flowering) • Clean & rake the borders and remove old dead leaves. • Mulch thirsty plants This will keep any moisture trapped underneath. Thirsty plants • Phloxes • Asters • Persicarias • Aconitums • Heleniums • Monardas Here’s a quick and easy mulch for thirsty plants: Put grass clippings on a plastic sheet and leave for one day in sunshine. Turn the pile of clippings and leave for another twenty four hours, or until they have turned brown. Apply the mulch by spreading round each plant. Never cover the crown of a plant. You can make a simple mulch using partially decomposed grass clippings.
However, whenever you mulch you nearly always get more slugs. So don’t add this mulch near hostas, dahlias, delphiniums or other favourite slug fests. Cultivate some drought-tolerant plants Several types of plant are specially adapted to strong sunshine and dry conditions and they positively thrive in hot, dry summers: Aromatic plants Pungent plants have an oily coating designed to screen out the sun’s drying
rays. Many of these peak in August. • Lavender • Thymes and oreganos • Yarrow • Chamomiles • Catmint are all good examples of drought tolerant species so a mix of these in your garden covers you for those nice long sunny spells but also grow in moderate sunshine as well. (continues...)

Fleshy-leafed plants Some plants with thick water-filled leaves (like cactus have) can withstand dry conditions and purple-leafed sedums, house leeks, phormiums, eucomis and succulents will not succumb to lack of water for long periods. • Sedum • Phormium • Eucomis • Paddle plant • Agaves • Yucca • Aloa Compost needs to be open and free draining as succulents don’t like being stood in over moist ground. They have evolved for dry conditions. These should be able to thrive if given the shelter of walls, and a soil that is well-drained. Remember that location and shelter from a persistant wind can make all the difference to most plants, not just these types.

Plant out spring cabbage seedlings 10cm (4ins) apart, in rows 30cm (12ins) apart. Take out two in every three plants over the next few months as the spring greens. Lift maincrop potatoes and leaving tubers on the soil to dry off for an hour or two before you store them in sacks or boxes. Make sure you choose a well-ventilated, frost-free shed for your storage area though. Sow your lawn from seed at the beginning of September; if you read our guide to creating the perfect lawn (well, almost perfect!) then you will have read about us using turf ready made but you can sow your own lawn which us cheaper and gives you the satisfaction of having grown your own. See our guide back in the May issue to help you prepare your surface. With the topsoil down you then gently re-rake to remove any footprints. which you made when you ‘tamped it down’. Mark the area into square metres and mark this out using some string. Shake your box of lawnseed and use approximately 50g per sq metre when sprinkling. Once sown then remove your guide string and gently rake over the seed to get it slightly covered by the soil. A light watering with a fine watering sprayer (so as not to move seeds around and make the lawn uneven) after sowing and each day thereafter if the soil becomes dry will have the grass seedlings on their way up. Cover your seed with some horticultural netting to prevent birds from eating it or lay 50% more seed to compensate for the seed that the birds will eat. Now you have sown the seeds of your own gardening destiny - Enjoy!

Churchcroft Vets have launched a campaign to try and help everyone get their pet vaccinated and neutered. This August and until the September Breeze hits the press, 5th September, Churchcroft Vets have a remarkable offer for Puppy and Kitten vaccinations. Churchcroft are offering a full vaccination course for dogs or cats for just £25. This would usually cost up to £56 and so saves up to £31 per pet. In addition, any participating pets will get a voucher for £50 off the cost of neutering (dogs, £20 for cats), valid for 3 months. George, head vet at Churchcroft says "We know that owners sometimes have to delay vaccination and neutering owing to the cost and this can lead to preventable diseases affecting their beloved pets. We hope that with this offer we will encourage more owners to protect their pets with early vaccination and neutering". The neutering discount vouchers will also be available to any pets who join (or who have already joined) Churchcroft's discounted scheme for good health care, the Pet Care Plan, before the 5th September. So even if your pet has already been vaccinated you can still get a great deal on neutering. To take advantage of this offer, call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and get your best friend protected asap.

swinging success THE ERIC GIBSON & MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE CHARITY GOLF DAY PROVED A GREAT SUCCESS! The Eric Gibson and Motor Neurone Disease Charity Golf Day was held at Beeston Fields Golf Club during June to remember Eric, a great friend of people involved at Beeston Fields and a work colleague to many people throughout the country. The event also raised money for the Motor Neurone Disease Charity. Many thanks to all the people and organisations who supported this year’s event which was great success in all respects! The winning teams were: 1st Nottingham Building Society 2nd The Gibson’s – Eric’s sons and guests 3rd Countrywide 4th Beeston Birdies There were also four nearest the pin prices, the winners of these were: 3rd Hole - Ross Medlicote 8th Hole - Kelvin Dudley 14th Hole - Eddie McCausland 18th Hole - John Hollgen – nearest the pin in two The weather was excellent on the day and the shot gun style format worked well with 25 teams playing this year. “The main purpose of the day is to remember our friend and colleague, Eric, who over the years put so much in to the junior section of Beeston Fields Golf Club and was Club Captain and was known to many people through working at Northern Rock. It was a fun day and evening with a number of nongolfers joining us for the evening meal, presentation and auction. We are sure that all those who attended the day and evening will agree it was fun and very successful!” In total they will have raised in the region of £10,000 which will be presented to the Motor Neurone Disease charity over the next couple of weeks. “As well as the team entry fees contributing to cover the running costs of the day, the revenue we earned from the auction - over £4,000, raffle £900, and from the Virgin Giving site – around £2,500 - means that after 4 years of holding the golf day, it will take us close to raising a total of £50,000 for the charity”. Next year’s event will take place on 24th June 2015 – so please put this in your diary! Many thanks once again to everybody who was involved and supported the day.
