Meet new local businesses ready to share their skills and services with you...
Meet Mary she has lived in Beeston or Long Eaton all her life and comes from a big family, so catering has always come as second nature to Mary. “As a teenager I loved to spend an evening, baking batches of apple pies, sponges and scones for the freezer. At 18 years old I cooked a Sunday lunch for 35 family and friends at home, there were tables all over the house even in the hall. I have been taking pleasure in cooking in large amounts ever since, from themed fundraising events to large pots of stew for people living on the streets. I also love to invite friends and family around to my home for dinner, good company and good food is the best recipe for a good evening. After years of being told I should turn my hobby into a business, I am doing just that. The endless possibilities for creating a PoPuPaRestaurant in your home or anywhere is very exciting. I can cook in your home or deliver everything ready for you to take the credit (if you want to). If you are fascinated by Come Dine With Me and you would like to have a dinner party but don’t have the time, confidence or a big enough table, let Mary do it for you! “I can provide all you need for an intimate dinner for 2 in your home to a themed 3 course dinner for 80 in a venue of your choice”. Starting from £15 per person for 3 courses, all food will be freshly prepared for you using fresh ingredients from local suppliers. “If you would like to know more I will be delighted to discuss your ideas with you”. At Francique Caribbean cuisine, they aim to provide you with a dining experience that is both satisfying and stress free. “We understand the importance of having good home-cooked meals, but appreciate that, nowadays, many of us lead such incredibly hectic lives, we are too busy to prepare them regularly. So, we often resort to eating out or having takeaways. Treat yourself to our authentic home-cooked, Caribbean cuisine once or twice a week or even once a month - it's entirely up to you. We’ll take the strain while you have some quality time with family and friends. We are dedicated to creating tasty but healthy cuisine. We only use high quality ingredients - organically farmed meat, dairy and vegetable products as well as locally sourced ingredients, whenever possible. We also limit the use of refined sugars, processed foods, salt and fat. For us, using organic produce has re-awoken memories of how Caribbean food used to taste ‘back in the day’. ur fish counter has never been so attractive, especially since we have sourced a family fishery in St Martin, Cornwall. They are sending us a much larger range of sustainable fish and specialise in products such as white spider crab meat, which is phenomenal and available throughout Christmas. We have also travelled to Brancaster, Norfolk , where we met a local family who now supply us with the cleanest, tastiest wild mussels. Our self service luxury olive counter continues to please, and now includes a section for quail and duck eggs. Now is the time for hearty winter veg, which we buy directly from Nottingham farmers. Bursting with flavour and goodness, no-one else can beat us on freshness and quality, along with a vast choice to keep testing your culinary skills. The Beeston Methodist Carol Choir was first formed during the 1870’s by members of the Methodist congregation then worshipping in premises on Chapel Street. Their object was to raise money for a local charity called the Beeston Benevolent Society which helped the local “poor and needy”. In the early days up to 1914, singing took place outside the homes of the chapel’s own members, in an area which ranged from the central parts of Beeston (around The City) through the newer districts by the railway, the Park district in Chilwell and as far as Meadow Lane. At this time the singing took place throughout Christmas night until breakfast and the choir was made up of men only! During the First World War, many members were called-up to the forces and it was decided to invite ladies to join the Choir. They readily agreed and so the Choir developed into one with four parts and mixed voices. The rapid expansion of Beeston during the period between the wars made it impossible for the Choir to continue to sing to all Church members, thus efforts had to be confined to the areas north of the High Road in Beeston and the Park districts of Chilwell. The Choir still goes out singing every year on Christmas Eve, but since the late 1950s it has also been necessary to sing on one or two evenings before Christmas in order to cover such a large area. Nor is it any longer socially acceptable for singing on the streets to continue late into the night, so singing now concludes around 10pm. The amount of money raised by the Carol Choir has increased steadily and now provides the Beeston Chilwell Road Methodist Benevolent Society with its only income. The Society (founded in 1826) distributes money and gifts to the sick poor and needy of the area irrespective of race, creed or sect and is still fulfilling a great need in the area. Wollaton Village Day Nurseries were established in 1994. The buildings have been specifically designed with children in mind. The four Nurseries in the group are located in Wollaton Village centre, Bramcote village on Chapel Street, Eastwood on Church Street and in Heanor on Wilmot Street behind the health centre. They all have a friendly atmosphere of home with an educational environment. They take children aged between 6 weeks and 5 years and some of their Nurseries run a holiday and after school club. The four Nurseries follow the group policies regarding childcare but each unit operates its own opening times and price structure, general opening times are from 8am to 6pm, but longer hours can be accommodated for. “We have adopted this system to try and give the parents at each Nursery a more flexible service to fit into everyday working life. For instance the Bramcote Village nursery operates a pay as you go system to accommodate shift workers, and the other sites have similar options available”. The buildings provide the highest standard of safety and security. The access to each building is controlled by an electronic latch and closed circuit security cameras are installed throughout. All the nurseries are set in a well established secure grounds with play areas, consisting of lawns and large play grounds. “Our aims are to give the children a good foundation and prepare them for the future, to achieve this we have a team of committed Nursery Nurses to provide a wide range of activities and experiences for all our children to enjoy. We recognise that our staffs are the most valuable resource in the provision of high quality child care; we are therefore committed to a policy of staff development and continued improvement of the quality of care given. In addition to the Nursery staff, we also have a qualified teacher who will spend time with small groups of children from the preschool unit”. The beauty of a greenhouse is that we can grow nearly any type of plants that we would like, because all of these other climate variables can be controlled. You can heat your greenhouse naturally with the sun or use artificial heat. In some cases your night heat will be up to 10 -20 degrees higher, using just the free power of the sun. For those who think they don’t have the space for a greenhouse there are a variety of lean-to greenhouses that can fit in a tight space such as a yard or smaller garden. Like people, they also come in many varieties and sizes so we take a look and help you choose just the right type for you to keep happily gardening this winter. Greenhouse frame materials
Getting your plants ready to take on the wind, cold, and perhaps even snow? We take a look at how we can ‘take cover’ from the harshest winter weather and keep on enjoying the gardening hobby!
Wood: Experienced hobby greenhouse owners often prefer a wooden frame and If you are building your own greenhouse or lean-to then wood is also the natural choice to work with and is strong if chosen correctly so you can use glass or plastic sheeting. The other benefit of wood is that when you want to put shelves, hooks up etc it is a simple hammer job, not something you can do with an aluminium or galvanised steel frame. Aluminium or galvanised steel: Requires virtually no maintenance and, like wood, can take any covering you choose. The disadvantage of metal that heat and cold conducts easily, so are more difficult to heat. Plastic: Only strong enough to be used with lightweight plastic sheet coverings. Generally found in small structures likes portable and mini greenhouses, they can also be prone to wind damage - especially if not secured properly. Glass or plastic windows? There are three common choices of covering for a home greenhouse: glass panes, polycarbonate sheets, or polythene plastic sheeting.
breezemagazine 34
gardening For most hobby gardeners, the choice is likely to be between a glass, or a polycarbonate cover. Glass allows the most light to penetration but is such a good conductor that heat and cold just pass through. Also not so good if going to be placed near trees, around kids playing ball or in a particularly windy area etc. Polycarbonate sheets are lighter than glass and far less prone to breakage. Sunlight penetration is less than with a plain glass cover. However, as light diffuses through the sheets, plants are less likely to burn under strong sunlight (more useful in the spring and summer). Single polycarbonate is as attractive as glass but the real value in polycarbonate comes from the double or triple thickness sheets which have an in-built air space between each sheet and can save a lot of money on heating costs. Polythene sheets are the most likely to fail on you under bad conditions such as heavy snow and usually found in smaller lean-to’s and cold frames. In summary: a wooden frame using polycarbonate sheeting units will probably give the best insulation all round and be cheaper to heat in the coldest part of winter. Heating & lighting There are several popular types of greenhouse heater: An electric heater is cheap to install, easily moved, respond quickly to sudden changes in temperature. Always choose an electric heater designed specifically for greenhouses household heaters are not safe in the greenhouse. Get one with a thermostat and preferably one you can switch the fan on or off for more options on placement. Thermostatically controlled types only come on when needed but if you are worried about the cost of electrically heating your greenhouse then why not buy one of those small plug in energy monitors? These are around £5 - £7 and will track usage which you can easily translate into ‘pounds shillings and pence’. This way you can see day by day how much your greenhouse is costing you, which is quite reassuring. Alternatives if you have no electricity to your greenhouse are propane gas heater or paraffin heating.

Gas probably the best option after electric. They can be bulky though and give off carbon monoxide. Condensation can also be a problem with these heaters. For both reasons you need to make sure that propane greenhouse heaters are only used with adequate ventilation. Paraffin heating is the simplest and cheapest way to heat a greenhouse in a relatively mild winter climate for example if the outside temperature does not fall below about -6C and the required greenhouse temperature is no more than +5C. One paraffin heater will keep your greenhouse or lean-to free of frost and should run for about three days solid with a single fill. When weighing up the economics and cost of greenhouse heaters you may also look at soil-warming cables. These considerably reduce the requirement for greenhouse heaters. These are available from gardening supply outlets. There are also small heating ‘mats’ which go under a tray and heat just that one area - very quick and cheap to run. Lighting As mentioned in our previous article, standard fluorescent tubes can offer invaluable light for plants during the shorter days and they are economical to run - you only need to supply light to the plants you are growing so you can choose how little you want to use artificial lighting or how much depending on your space and ambition! Let us take a look at how we can use artificial light to grow some fresh chillies as a beacon of warmth in the winter gloom: Ward off the chill with fresh chilli peppers Simply plant your chilli pepper seeds straight into some normal multi purpose compost, ideal mixed with some vermiculite. Remember that different varieties take different times to germinate. If you are growing habanero peppers for example you can expect them to take up to three or four weeks to germinate, where as annum varieties such as cayenne will sprout much more quickly. Aim to space them about 5cms apart then lightly cover the seeds with about 0.5cm of compost and spray the tray lightly with water. Check them every day and spray with a little water if they look a bit dry. Aim to prevent the compost from drying out rather than keeping it wet. The two main requirements the seed has at this beginning stage are heat and moisture. The optimum temperature for germination varies
gardening
from species to species but is roughly in the region of 70 degrees f. Try and keep the temperature of the seeds constant by using a heated propagator mat under your seed trays or keep them indoors in a warm cupboard until they have sprouted - then use your heated greenhouse or lean - to. The time taken for germination varies greatly between varieties. Some between one to three weeks. Others such as Habenero may take up to six weeks or longer. Then they will require light. Depending on where you are and which way your greenhouse is facing you may well have enough light to grow them on but if you don’t then you can use a cheap option which is a simple fluorescent tube light bought from any DIY store for around £20. Purchase tubes that are referred to as ‘cool white’ as they are not then likely to give off too much heat and scorch any leaves. Rig the lights up above your chilli seedlings, positioned between 525cm from the top of your plants, but using lightweight chains or thin rope so that you can adjust them higher as your plants grow. Use a simple timer switch so that the plants use daylight as long as possible and then dial in the artificial light to make up to eighteen hours e.g a winter day gives us seven hours of daylight, you set the timer to deliver eleven hours of artificial light during darkness. The end result will be lovely fresh chillies, bursting with goodness and warmth for those lovely spicy winter warmers. You can, of course, grow other plants using this basic method. Finally, by only heating the part of your greenhouse which you use at any one time you save on energy use so partition off any section not in use unless you have a small lean-to or cold frame. There! - it need not be so expensive to set up a simple and small greenhouse or lean-to, with a small paraffin heater, and a mini strip light. Low cost, effective and which allows you to still enjoy tending to your plants - even give you some ‘space’ from the indoors and a sense of purpose. In the meantime may we wish you a Merry Christmas and many happy hours ‘playing’ in your greenhouse. Have fun and be merry! * Always consult a qualified electrician if you require any electrical work for your greenhouse.

A dog is for life, not just for Christmas!
Every year around Christmas and shortly afterwards, Castlefield Kennels get a rise in the number of stray dogs. Could you offer a home now for one of these dogs which have been with them for up to two months, and all need a permanent, forever home? Many unclaimed dogs are often frightened, have been turned out on the street and do not understand what has happened to them, which is why a new home, perhaps before Christmas, would be marvellous for them all. However, Castlefield Kennels know taking on a new pet is a major decision, a lifetime commitment. So if you can afford the time for love, food, vet fees, worming, de-fleaing, annual vaccinations, then you are ready to take on a rescued dog, and just maybe one of these would be for you. ‘Santa Paws Event’ (and free veterinary advice). The staff at Churchcroft Vets are hosting a tea and cake sale to raise money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. There will be a selection of homemade cakes, tea, coffee and squash all served by head vet George and the team. As well as the Churchcroft staff, Yasmin, who is a working Hearing Dog, will be attending this event (and probably helping to keep an eye on the cakes). Hearing Dogs alert their deaf companions to everyday sounds and warnings from telephones ringing to fire alarms. Yasmin will be happy to show off her training in touching with her paw to get attention when needed. Whilst enjoying a slice of cake, why not discuss any pet healthcare concerns that you have with George or one of the other staff? In addition, bring in a photo of your pet looking cute or doing something daft and the one voted best on the day wins a prize—FREE VACCINES FOR A YEAR. All adults, children and well-behaved dogs are welcome to attend. Saturday December 10th 2-4pm at Churchcroft Veterinary Centre, 111 High Road, Chilwell, NG9 4AT.

Domestic Abuse affects 1 in 4 women at some point in their lives. The abuse can be to a woman, man or child. It takes many forms, emotional, sexual, physical, financial or verbal. Domestic Abuse does not discriminate against age, sex, race, colour, religion, culture or background. Breeze meets an organisation that can help...
Midlands Women’s Aid Charity is a specialist Domestic Abuse service provider. They were established in February 1974 to support women and children experiencing Domestic Abuse. They understand they were one of the first organizations outside London to do so. Now having 37 years experience in this field. In August 1976 they opened their Refuge (safe house) and were immediately inundated with referrals from all parts of the country. To date they have supported some 3000 women to escape Domestic Abuse and helped them improved their and their children’s lives. “We provide Outreach and Children’s Services within the local community of Broxtowe. These services provide emotional support to women and children, help them come to terms with their experiences, discuss and identify how to take control of their lives and move forward. Almost 9000 women and children have benefited from the Outreach service. Outreach also delivers training and awareness session to women, children and agencies. We offer a variety of courses from confidence building to employability skills with a view to getting women back to work and to encourage children to part in good citizenship. We are deeply embedded in this community and have many local supporters who help provide us with donations of money, food, clothing and household goods. Many of our families arrive at the Refuge with only the clothes they stand up in. These donations go some way to provide basis essentials and help our clients to set up home when they are eventually re-housed. We take this opportunity to thank all of our benefactors and look forward to their continued support. We appreciate everyone has had to tighten their belts this year especially at this time. However, we would ask every reader to please support our Christmas Appeal. This year Tesco Extra, Beeston have kindly allowed us to appeal to shoppers in their store for donations of food, toiletries or gifts. When shopping please buy a extra item and donate it in store”. “Fostering has changed my life” A former taxi driver steered her life around when she became a foster carer. The desire to have a house full of children laughing and playing is what prompted Sarah Taylor (54) to quit her job as a taxi driver and carve out a new life looking after foster children.
breezemagazine 44
l breeze appea Her story is one of inspiration as she recounts the highs and lows she has shared with over 100 children since she began fostering 21 years ago. Now working for Foster Care Associates (FCA), she believes that it is the commitment and 24 hour support the organisation provides is what helps to keep her ontrack. Sarah explains: “It really is a team effort and staff at FCA are always on the end of the phone offering advice and guidance whenever I need it.” “We’ve fostered over 100 children and everyone has been very different - it’s a case of recognising their individual needs and making sure they feel secure and part of the family.” Many of the children who come to Sarah have had very fragmented childhoods and integration in the local community can be a major challenge. Sarah encourages the children to enjoy all sorts of interests ranging from local clubs and sporting activities through to cinema trips, days out and family holidays. FCA is the UK’s leading independent fostering agency with a network of 80 offices. The organisation is continually seeking to attract new and experienced carers who believe they have the determination and understanding to take up this challenging yet very rewarding role. FCA needs foster carers who are living in the Nottingham area who can provide a safe and stable home environment for vunerable children and young people.
