On Friday 14th December the Village Singers invite you to join them at their Christmas Concert, when they hope, with your help, to bring some cheer into the lives of our local homeless. Performing a wide range of their Christmas favourites, the evening promises to be a wonderful curtain raiser to the Christmas Season. The Christmas Concert takes place in the Oasis Church, commencing at 7.30pm. Admission is £5 donation. All the proceeds from the evening will go to support the Canaan Trust, the local independent charity which provides accommodation and 24-7 support to the homeless of our local communities. Michelle Cassidy, Musical Director of the Village Singers commented, Toton Churches Christmas Services “Every member of the choir wanted to help raise awareness of the 9th December existence of homelessness in our Family Worship Gift Service area. No-one chooses to be St Peter’s Church 10.30am homeless, and this is especially true at Christmas. Sadly, for many, it will 16th December be the harsh reality which will greet Joint Nativity Service them on Christmas morning. With no Methodist Church 10.30am family to bring cheer to their day, no Carol Services presents, no turkey – it’s just another Methodist Church 6.00pm day, with little or no hope. The choir, St Peter’s Church 8.00pm together with those who join us in concert on the 14th December, hope 24th December to at least provide some cheer to the Christingle Services homeless. We plan to have a lung St Peter’s Church bursting and joyous evening.” 3.00pm & 5.00pm Tickets for the Christmas Concert Methodist Church 4.00pm can be obtained from the Canaan Communion Trust Office on Main Street. Ducks Away 2013! As usual the Mayor of Broxtowe, will start the race by releasing 1500 plastic ducks into the River Erewash. They will float down the river and be caught at the bridge approximately 600 yards down stream. The owners of the first 10 ducks to cross the winning line will receive a prize. and people start ringing as soon as Christmas is over to make sure that they can reserve a duck for the race. We usually attract hundreds of local people and many family pets. It is one of the few events that all of the family can enjoy together. And there is always a great atmosphere. The people in the Toton/Beeston/Long Eaton/Sandiacre, Stapleford, Nottingham and Derby area now attend as a matter of course. After all what else can you do on New Years day? Home Instead Senior Care in Nottingham, who provide care to older people, to allow them to remain independent in their own homes, invited members of the local community to join them as part of Macmillan’s ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’.
The Home Instead team, along with support from attendees, managed to raise over £110 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The coffee morning was held at the Methodist Church in Beeston, where a selection of fun activities were planned including, a ‘Guess how many Jelly Babies in the jar’ competition and a raffle, all prizes were donated by caregivers and other generous businesses. Disability Direct also attended on the day, giving older people and their families advice on services, such as personal budgeting and benefits. Owner of Home Instead, Primo Sule commented, “As a company who specialise in providing care to people in their own homes, Macmillan Cancer Support is a charity which is very close to our hearts. It is an illness that affects many of our older clients and we deeply appreciate the work that Macmillan does in support specifically of older people. Twinkle Little Star This Christmas, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People is launching a Twinkle Little Star appeal to raise much needed funds and spread the word about the work of the charity and the children it supports.
On their Twinkle Little Star appeal webpage, www.rainbows.co.uk/twinkle, beautiful singing from a child at Rainbows, who was never expected to speak, is topping the bill; it is guaranteed to warm the hearts of everyone who listens to it. “For all the children who use Rainbows, we cannot be sure of Christmas times to come. The charity is hoping that people will spare a thought for those children whilst they are still with us and make a donation to make Christmas really special. They said that the video’s little star, Charlotte Blissett, would never talk, but she has overcome all the odds and is singing an emotional version of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star to support Rainbows. Charlotte will not have an easy life and there will be many frustrations and heartaches along the way, but for her parents, Alison and Michael Blissett, Rainbows is one of the few places they can come to for support. Wollaton Village Day Nurseries were established in 1994. The buildings have been specifically designed with children in mind. The four Nurseries in the group are located in Wollaton Village centre, Bramcote village on Chapel Street, Eastwood on Church Street and in Heanor on Wilmot Street behind the health centre. Some 120m of tram track foundations were laid using an innovative machine, which not only speeds up the process of laying tram tracks, but also reduces the amount of noise and dust created in comparison to using traditional track-laying methods. One of only four machines in the world will be used to lay approximately half of the track needed for the tram extension, which will also serve Wilford and Clifton in the south of the city. Foundations for tram tracks will start to be laid next year, once utility services have been moved out of the way of the tram routes. Wild Mushroom Stroganoff with herb Crumb Topping The original version of this impressive dish was created in honour of Count Stroganoff by a Czarist chef for a cookery competition in the 1890s. Since then Stroganoff has been served at celebratory banquets the world over, and this stunning gourmet vegetarian version will give any occasion a little Imperial magic.
Method Boil or steam the potatoes until tender. Drain and return to the pan.
Serves 4
Heat the milk, pour over the potatoes and mash well.
Ingredients Serves 4 - Prep and Cooking Time 20 minutes Makes 12 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 14 canapes Ingredients 1 large courgette (approx 200g), straight if possible 45g vegan cream cheese (eg Swedish Soft or Tofutti) 2 artichoke hearts (in brine) drained & chopped 2 sun dried tomatoes, drained of oil and chopped 1 tsp lemon juice 2 tsp chives, finely chopped Method Peel 12 or 14 vertical strips of courgette using a potato peeler (preferably a swivel type one). Bring a large pan of water to the boil, blanch the courgette for 30 seconds and then refresh under cold water. Put the cream cheese, artichokes, tomatoes and lemon juice into a food processor and blend until smooth, then add the chives. Lay the courgette strips flat and spread a tsp of the pate on top. Then roll up gently and stand upright. Garnish with extra chives and thin strips of sun dried tomatoes.

675g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 150ml milk or soya milk 1 tbsp mixed fresh herbs, finely chopped 40g butter or margarine 450g assorted white mushrooms, roughly chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 150ml double cream 50g fresh white breadcrumbs 2 tbsp fresh herbs, finely chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Stir in the herbs and season to taste. Melt 15g butter or margarine in a pan. Add mushrooms and garlic and cook gently for 5 minutes. Stir in the cream, season to taste then heat gently - cover and keep warm Melt the remaining 25g of butter or margarine in a pan and stir in the breadcrumbs, herbs and season to taste To assemble, serve individually by placing equal portions of the mashed potato on each plate. Spoon the mushroom sauce over the top, and finish with the topping. Toast under a hot grill until golden brown.

Ben Strange started an apprenticeship with Reg Vardy Vauxhall at Chilwell soon after leaving school aged sixteen. He gained all his certificates there and is a fully qualified Vauxhall Technician. After seven years in the business working at several different garages he has gained a lot of experience and is now happy to work on any make of vehicle. Ben is so passionate about cars it is all he ever wanted to do. During a spell this year when he was out of work he was still busy every day helping his friends rebuild engines etc, much to the dismay of his Mum and the neighbours as this took place on the home driveway! It was during this time he decided he wanted to run his own garage. He found premises at Bessell Lane, Stapleford, it was a good size and only a few minutes from his home in Chilwell so he decided to take it on. It took a while to get the equipment and all the paperwork sorted but he has been up and running for about eight weeks now. Ben has had a steady stream of customers including Funeral Director Julie Wesson who has asked him to maintain all of their vehicles - very important! Ben’s garage has computer diagnostic equipment and he can help with a basic service to a full engine rebuild or tuning for better performance. Still time to give a child a magical Christmas with the NSPCC’s Letter from Santa The NSPCC is reminding people in Nottinghamshire, there is still time to add some extra magic to a child’s Christmas this year by ordering a Letter from Santa, before 17 December. The charity is helping to give a truly memorable Christmas by arranging for a personalised letter from Santa to be sent to children throughout Nottinghamshire for a suggested donation of £5. There are five magical styles of NSPCC Letter from Santa for children of all ages, making them the ideal gift for families with more than one child as each child can receive a truly unique letter. breezegardening Reflections on what December brings as the cold starts to bite: as meteorologists keep warning us of a hard winter this year let’s be on our guard and also continue to enjoy our hobby in the darkest days of the year. It seems strangely contradictory but according to some experts the record loss of Arctic sea ice this summer may mean a cold winter for the UK. This region has been subjected to bad winters before after summers with very low sea ice, such as 2011 and 2007. Wild extremes this winter seem to be a strong possibility if we base it on past records. Gardening always poses more challenges as a hobby in winter, not least because it is simply harder to get things done on the whole: harder ground, adverse and therefore uncomfortable weather, low light levels. It is not all doom and gloom though - after all it’s not as if we shouldn’t be used to it by now! Indoors We have covered the use of artificial light before and it is a very good way to ‘keep things going’ if you miss simply growing something - whether to eat or just display. Obviously, we don’t want to use expensive electricity profligately so we look at the light source first and for most hobbyists that means plain ordinary fluorescent tube lights. These types of bulb are the coolest burning and most energy efficient source. They also provide enough light to be a primary light source - literally replacing nearly all or entirely the natural daylight we get so plentifully during spring & summer. Grow indoor plants under these lights and you will see results providing you keep them undercover and reasonably warm certainly not exposed to frost. It’s possible to set up such lighting hung above the plants - about one foot away for a twenty five watt tube, slightly ore if higher wattage is used. Lightweight chains & hooks can be purchased from most diy stores. Make sure you follow any safety advice in this regard and do consult an electrician on matters such as installation of electrical sockets if needed and the use of safety rcd/circuit breakers. Time the artificial lights for twelve to sixteen hours per day and coincide the time the artificial light is on with the time of day the plant would get natural light. Most indoor plants also need ten to twelve hours of darkness each day as well to balance their daily cycle. Do the usual tasks of watering, fertilising and repotting indoor

plants exactly as you would if they were growing in natural light which is the whole point of it, keeping your hobby going in some form. Once you have set up a small growing frame (not unlike a cold frame with sides to keep everything together and offer some shelter if in a cooler place such as the garage or a potting shed) you can have the lights arranged on chains so you adjust the height to the growth of your plants. A timer and some experimentation will lead you to better results each crop (whichever plant type you decide on e.g Basil, or other herbs). It really is about learning and having fun at the same time and need not be on a large scale - just one tube is a good starting point and you can grow from seed to add to the sense of accomplishment. Imagine - your own fresh Winter Basil or Chives! Harvest If you have already been busy planting some food crops in time for a winter harvest then now is the time to reap what yo have sown! Usually December means hard frosts and it's time to get those cabbages and cauliflowers out of the ground. Sticking with the brassicas, the Brussels sprouts should be starting - you are allowed to eat them on other days as well as Christmas day! Task list for December As things start to get a bit battered it’s well worth keeping a check on the things that can really cause you problems: • Sheds: check damage to roofing • Fence posts: any starting to wobble and weaken in the winds? • Lawn: try not to walk on frosty lawns as it can damage the blades • Spray fruit trees: Once the leaves have totally fallen, spray with a winter tree wash, (vegetable oil based). This cleans the branches and kills fungal spores and over-wintering insects and their eggs. • Ponds: Stop feeding fish. Clean and service pond pumps. • Our feathered friends: Put out feeders for the birds, as well as fresh water. Put up a natural bird box - shelter in winter and a home to a young avian family in the spring! • Outside taps: watch for freezing and switch them off at the isolator when not needed. (continues...)

likely to be damaged by frost with garden fleece or perhaps sacking. • Have a garden reshuffle: moving pots and planters closer to the house so you can enjoy the
colours and textures of the plants as you keep warm on the inside!. • Clean up ready for next year: once herbaceous perennials have finished flowering and die
back, remove and clean plant supports. Back indoors With the nights now well and truly ‘drawn in’ houseplants require less feeding and watering. Of course, as the temperature drops outside on goes the central heating and the temperature in the house gets nice and toasty for you but a little too stuffy for your plants so make sure they don't dry out. Try to create an indoor garden - situate a moderate sized lined basket near a patio window and get something growing in there. A good example are tomatoes, choose the ‘indeterminate’ varieties which continue growing and producing indefinitely. Cherry and plum types work better than large slicing types. Limit the number of plants - it is a temptation, especially if you are growing plants from seed, and you get a lot of high quality seedlings, to make your ‘mini garden’ overcrowded. Keep enough space, with good lighting for every plant. Get rid of the weakest ones and trim the excessive growth when needed. Why not try your hand at growing your own Avocado plant? If you save the pit from a very ripe avocado, wash it well of any traces of fruit and then dry it off for a few days. After drying, the pit can be suspended in a glass of water and you should see root growth of about two inches. This can now be planted in a pot of soil and tended to as a houseplant. It all adds a little spice to your hobby! So come on let’s try these simple indoor tips and see if we can’t beat the winter blues with our hobby! Maggie’s First Birthday Brings in 100 people! Last month, Maggie’s in Nottingham celebrated their first year open! It took nearly four years to fundraise to get the money to build the centre, and now it has been open for a full year. “So how did we celebrate? We had lots going on in the centre with taster classes of some of the sessions we hold throughout the week. Lots of people dropped in for the Creative Writing, Tai Chi, Yoga and Relaxation classes. Over 100 people came to the centre in total for the birthday celebration and it was great to see the centre so busy and everyone so happy. With mushy peas and mint sauce available it was a true Nottingham party! With bunting out, people were writing lovely birthday messages to Maggie’s Amongst the guests were Sophie Doughty, the ten year old girl who organised the children’s sponsored bike ride. She enjoyed a cup of mushy peas and cake. The Saturday after Maggie’s birthday Sophie, and lots of other children rode on their bikes, scooters and in pushchairs 3 miles round Calverton Village to raise money for our birthday. To date the money is still coming in and being counted, and currently stands at just over £3000! Elsewhere on our birthday was another party for us, at Jenny Davidson’s house. She hosted a coffee morning with her friends, with 30 people showing up and raised over £260 for Maggie’s! At the end of the day, Kate, the Centre Head cut the Maggie’s birthday cake as we sung happy birthday! Maggie’s wants to say thank you to everyone that came to our birthday party and for all the people who fundraised for us”.
