WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS TO SEE ABIGAIL’S PARTY ON MONDAY 21 JANUARY AT 7.30PM Direct from the West End Theatre Royal Bath Productions and Chocolate Factory Productions present Abigail’s Party by Mike Leigh, Directed by Lindsay Posner. Donna Summer is playing on the stereo. Dishes of cheese and pineapple are on the coffee table…the social get-together from hell is about to begin. Beverly, and estate agent husband Laurence, have invited round new neighbours, Tony and Ange and nervous divorcee Sue. As Beverly plies the guests with alcohol, cigarettes, Demis Roussos and nibbles, this horribly compelling evening descends into drunkenness and debauchery. Mike Leigh’s comedy became an instant classic when it first appeared as a BBC ‘Play For Today’ in 1977. It is a ruthlessly accurate observation of the pretensions of suburbia, a world obsessed with class and taste and ruled over by the monstrous Beverly. Mike Leigh is one of Britain’s most influential theatre and film directors. His numerous awards include Best Comedy Award for the stage play Goose Pimples, a BAFTA for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema, Film Critics Award for Best Film Life is Sweet, the Palme d’Or at Cannes for Secrets and Lies, and an Oscar for Topsy Turvy. Solicitors offer local housing market ‘Conveyancing Quality Scheme’ service Choosing a conveyancer or solicitor when buying or selling your home is difficult. We know that some are good, and some are not so good, but the question is how to know which is which? Robert Meredith, Head of Conveyancing

To help in this, the Law Society launched its Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS). Law Society President John Wotton said “CQS improves efficiency with common, consistent standards and service levels and enables consumers to recognise practices that provide a quality residential conveyancing service. "Buying a home is one of the largest purchases anyone will make in their lifetime, so it is essential that it is done to the highest standard by a solicitor.” Mortgage lenders have recognised the benefits of the CQS, with Santander and HSBC being just two which now require new solicitors on their panels to be CQS accredited. Also, the popular consumer finance website, moneysupermarket.com, has urged first time buyers to seek out a CQS solicitor. As such, it is understandable why Ellis-Fermor & Negus solicitors (with offices in Ripley, Belper, Long Eaton and Beeston) are pleased to announce they are one of only a handful of local firms to have been admitted to the CQS. Robert Meredith, Head of Conveyancing, stated: "This is recognition of the excellent service level we provide. It is a tribute to our staff and to the procedures that we already had in place that Ellis-Fermor & Negus was able to gain accreditation. “Our membership of the Scheme ensures that clients can have total confidence in our ability to handle their conveyancing transactions. Our experienced and friendly team can handle their sale or purchase smoothly and efficiently, dealing with any hiccups on the way.” On the Scheme in general, Robert commented “This is an excellent development for the house buying process. In what is already a crowded conveyancing market, the scheme will ensure that the public, lenders and insurers will be able to easily identify CQS practices with the knowledge that the service offered will be of a truly excellent standard.” Contact your local Branch of Ellis-Fermor & Negus on: Beeston: 0115 922 1591 email: beeston@ellis-fermor.co.uk Long Eaton: 0115 972 5222 email: longeaton@ellis-fermor.co.uk Ellis-Fermor & Negus has other branches at Ripley and in Belper. The firm has developed strong links within the local communities in each of these locations and offers a comprehensive range of legal services. breezemagazine 14

Local Care

Home Instead Senior Care in Nottingham, who provide care to older people, to allow them to remain independent in their own homes, invited members of the local community to join them as part of Macmillan’s ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’.

The Home Instead team, along with support from attendees, managed to raise over £110 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The coffee morning was held at the Methodist Church in Beeston, where a selection of fun activities were planned including, a ‘Guess how many Jelly Babies in the jar’ competition and a raffle, all prizes were donated by caregivers and other generous businesses. Disability Direct also attended on the day, giving older people and their families advice on services, such as personal budgeting and benefits. Owner of Home Instead, Primo Sule commented, “As a company who specialise in providing care to people in their own homes, Macmillan Cancer Support is a charity which is very close to our hearts. It is an illness that affects many of our older clients and we deeply appreciate the work that Macmillan does in support specifically of older people. The coffee morning was a fantastic way to inform the community about the local services available to them in their area, as well as bringing everyone together to raise money for such a deserving charity.” If you would like more information on Home Instead in Nottingham and the services that it provides, call 0115 922 6116 or visit www.homeinstead.co.uk/nottingham

As is the case with many Home Instead Senior Care franchise owners, Primo Sule has personal experience of the problems that arise when dealing with ageing family members. Finding the right help to support his 85 year old mother at home proved to be a major challenge and when the help was found, the service was poor and inconsistent. Following a similar experience when trying to obtain help for his mother in law Primo decided to look in some detail at domiciliary care provision, and after considering a number of options he discovered Home Instead Senior Care. "Once I looked at their approach to care and the quality of Caregivers I knew I had found the right organisation". Home Instead Nottingham was established in 2010 and now delivers care to clients across Nottinghamshire. Sarah Gell, a state registered nurse with 25 years experience in managing the provision of care within the private and independent sectors, joined the team during June 2010 and following an initial period as Community Liaison Manager took the role of Care Manager. “Our aim is to provide care that meets the requirements of people who come to us for help and to ensure that Caregivers are successfully matched with clients in order to go beyond basic needs and enhance the quality of life of those who use our services”. The Nottingham Home Instead Senior Care Office is part of a global network of more than 900 locally owned and operated offices.

Twinkle Little Star This Christmas, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People is launching a Twinkle Little Star appeal to raise much needed funds and spread the word about the work of the charity and the children it supports.

On their Twinkle Little Star appeal webpage, www.rainbows.co.uk/twinkle, beautiful singing from a child at Rainbows, who was never expected to speak, is topping the bill; it is guaranteed to warm the hearts of everyone who listens to it. “For all the children who use Rainbows, we cannot be sure of Christmas times to come. The charity is hoping that people will spare a thought for those children whilst they are still with us and make a donation to make Christmas really special. They said that the video’s little star, Charlotte Blissett, would never talk, but she has overcome all the odds and is singing an emotional version of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star to support Rainbows. Charlotte will not have an easy life and there will be many frustrations and heartaches along the way, but for her parents, Alison and Michael Blissett, Rainbows is one of the few places they can come to for support. Charlotte’s mother, Alison comments: “Rainbows is absolutely fantastic. When I need someone to talk to, Rainbows is there. They care for Charlotte, but they also do so much more than that for our family and all the other families they look after. Christmas is a special time for children and I really hope people will be kind and donate to Rainbows at this time of festive giving.” As a special thank you, Rainbows are giving everyone who donates more than £6 online a special Twinkle Wish Star product. To listen to Charlotte sing and to donate and to children like Charlotte this Christmas, visit www.rainbows.co.uk/twinkle, call Rainbows on 01509 638000 or post cheques to Rainbows Hospice, Freepost NAT 13561, Loughborough, LE11 2BR.

Wollaton Village Day Nurseries were established in 1994. The buildings have been specifically designed with children in mind. The four Nurseries in the group are located in Wollaton Village centre, Bramcote village on Chapel Street, Eastwood on Church Street and in Heanor on Wilmot Street behind the health centre. They all have a friendly atmosphere of home with an educational environment. They take children aged between 6 weeks and 5 years and some of their Nurseries run a holiday and after school club. The four Nurseries follow the group policies regarding childcare but each unit operates its own opening times and price structure, general opening times are from 8am to 6pm, but longer hours can be accommodated for. “We have adopted this system to try and give the parents at each Nursery a more flexible service to fit into everyday working life. For instance the Bramcote Village nursery operates a pay as you go system to accommodate shift workers, and the other sites have similar options available”. The buildings provide the highest standard of safety and security. The access to each building is controlled by an electronic latch and closed circuit security cameras are installed throughout. All the nurseries are set in a well established secure grounds with play areas, consisting of lawns and large play grounds. “Our aims are to give the children a good foundation and prepare them for the future, to achieve this we have a team of committed Nursery Nurses to provide a wide range of activities and experiences for all our children to enjoy. We recognise that our staffs are the most valuable resource in the provision of high quality child care; we are therefore committed to a policy of staff development and continued improvement of the quality of care given. In addition to the Nursery staff, we also have a qualified teacher who will spend time with small groups of children from the pre-school unit”. The Nursery operates a Key carer system whereby every child will have a member of staff who will get to know your child well and to whom you can go to with any concerns. Call 0115 922 2454

Bringing NET to Beeston and Chilwell NET is very proud to be supporting Broxtowe Borough Council and the Beeston Business Improvement District, which represents businesses in the area, with this year’s Beeston Town Centre Christmas festivities, which include fun, free festive entertainment and opportunities for free parking too. For more information visit: www.broxtowe.gov.uk/christmasentertainment. Where possible, tram works taking place on the main routes into Beeston Town Centre and Nottingham City Centre will be removed during December to assist shoppers and retailers at this busy time of year. In the New Year works will take place on Middle Street in Beeston Town Centre and at the junction of Queens Road and Station Road to improve road capacity along the A6005, so that tram works can begin on Chilwell Road in the spring. If you would like to find out more about tram project and the works involved in bringing the tram to this area, there are evening drop-in information sessions being held in Chilwell, at Eskdale Junior School, on Tuesday 4th December, and in Beeston, at the Town Hall, on Thursday 13th December. Elsewhere on the project, the first tram track foundations have now been laid at a new 1,300 space tram Park & Ride site which is being created near to the Bardills Island on the A52. Some 120m of tram track foundations were laid using an innovative machine, which not only speeds up the process of laying tram tracks, but also reduces the amount of noise and dust created in comparison to using traditional track-laying methods. One of only four machines in the world will be used to lay approximately half of the track needed for the tram extension, which will also serve Wilford and Clifton in the south of the city. Foundations for tram tracks will start to be laid next year, once utility services have been moved out of the way of the tram routes. Ben Strange started an apprenticeship with Reg Vardy Vauxhall at Chilwell soon after leaving school aged sixteen. He gained all his certificates there and is a fully qualified Vauxhall Technician. After seven years in the business working at several different garages he has gained a lot of experience and is now happy to work on any make of vehicle. Ben is so passionate about cars it is all he ever wanted to do. During a spell this year when he was out of work he was still busy every day helping his friends rebuild engines etc, much to the dismay of his Mum and the neighbours as this took place on the home driveway! It was during this time he decided he wanted to run his own garage. He found premises at Bessell Lane, Stapleford, it was a good size and only a few minutes from his home in Chilwell so he decided to take it on. It took a while to get the equipment and all the paperwork sorted but he has been up and running for about eight weeks now. Ben has had a steady stream of customers including Funeral Director Julie Wesson who has asked him to maintain all of their vehicles - very important! Ben’s garage has computer diagnostic equipment and he can help with a basic service to a full engine rebuild or tuning for better performance. Usual hours are 9am – 6pm, Monday to Friday but he is happy to arrange earlier/later or weekends if required. Still time to give a child a magical Christmas with the NSPCC’s Letter from Santa The NSPCC is reminding people in Nottinghamshire, there is still time to add some extra magic to a child’s Christmas this year by ordering a Letter from Santa, before 17 December. The charity is helping to give a truly memorable Christmas by arranging for a personalised letter from Santa to be sent to children throughout Nottinghamshire for a suggested donation of £5. There are five magical styles of NSPCC Letter from Santa for children of all ages, making them the ideal gift for families with more than one child as each child can receive a truly unique letter. Santa can even write a special letter to celebrate Baby’s First Christmas – a keepsake to treasure for years to come. Already the charity has processed 110,000 letters, with more orders coming in every day. Sharon King, NSPCC Community Fundraising Manager for Nottinghamshire, said: “Christmas is such an exciting time of year for children, so why not bring even more magic and excitement by ordering your letter for a child, friend or relative, before 17 December and support the NSPCC and ChildLine during this festive season. “Every £5 raised by Letter from Santa could help ChildLine be there whenever a child seeks help either online or by phone. And every £25 raised could enable a trained practitioner to deliver one hour of support through the NSPCC’s helpline for adults who are concerned about a child.” Each letter is uniquely personalised with the child’s name, age, address, gender and best friend’s name, and there’s also the chance to include a final ‘P.S.’ thought from Santa when you order online. The letters are beautifully illustrated and arrive via reindeer mail to make the experience truly unforgettable. Children will be amazed that Santa knows them so well! By sending a Letter from Santa, supported by Heart FM, you can make a child’s Christmas and help the NSPCC to protect children all year round through its projects and services including ChildLine – the UK’s free, confidential 24-hour helpline and online service for children and young people in distress or danger. The reindeer mailroom will be open until 17 December 2012, and all those who request a Letter from Santa this year will be entered into a free prize draw to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Lapland for a family of four. For online orders please visit www.nspcc.org.uk/santa or alternatively you can call 0845 839 9304 to place your order.

breezegardening Reflections on what December brings as the cold starts to bite: as meteorologists keep warning us of a hard winter this year let’s be on our guard and also continue to enjoy our hobby in the darkest days of the year. It seems strangely contradictory but according to some experts the record loss of Arctic sea ice this summer may mean a cold winter for the UK. This region has been subjected to bad winters before after summers with very low sea ice, such as 2011 and 2007. Wild extremes this winter seem to be a strong possibility if we base it on past records. Gardening always poses more challenges as a hobby in winter, not least because it is simply harder to get things done on the whole: harder ground, adverse and therefore uncomfortable weather, low light levels. It is not all doom and gloom though - after all it’s not as if we shouldn’t be used to it by now! Indoors We have covered the use of artificial light before and it is a very good way to ‘keep things going’ if you miss simply growing something - whether to eat or just display. Obviously, we don’t want to use expensive electricity profligately so we look at the light source first and for most hobbyists that means plain ordinary fluorescent tube lights. These types of bulb are the coolest burning and most energy efficient source. They also provide enough light to be a primary light source - literally replacing nearly all or entirely the natural daylight we get so plentifully during spring & summer. Grow indoor plants under these lights and you will see results providing you keep them undercover and reasonably warm certainly not exposed to frost. It’s possible to set up such lighting hung above the plants - about one foot away for a twenty five watt tube, slightly ore if higher wattage is used. Lightweight chains & hooks can be purchased from most diy stores. Make sure you follow any safety advice in this regard and do consult an electrician on matters such as installation of electrical sockets if needed and the use of safety rcd/circuit breakers. Time the artificial lights for twelve to sixteen hours per day and coincide the time the artificial light is on with the time of day the plant would get natural light. Most indoor plants also need ten to twelve hours of darkness each day as well to balance their daily cycle. Do the usual tasks of watering, fertilising and repotting indoor

breezemagazine 34

plants exactly as you would if they were growing in natural light which is the whole point of it, keeping your hobby going in some form. Once you have set up a small growing frame (not unlike a cold frame with sides to keep everything together and offer some shelter if in a cooler place such as the garage or a potting shed) you can have the lights arranged on chains so you adjust the height to the growth of your plants. A timer and some experimentation will lead you to better results each crop (whichever plant type you decide on e.g Basil, or other herbs). It really is about learning and having fun at the same time and need not be on a large scale - just one tube is a good starting point and you can grow from seed to add to the sense of accomplishment. Imagine - your own fresh Winter Basil or Chives! Harvest If you have already been busy planting some food crops in time for a winter harvest then now is the time to reap what yo have sown! Usually December means hard frosts and it's time to get those cabbages and cauliflowers out of the ground. Sticking with the brassicas, the Brussels sprouts should be starting - you are allowed to eat them on other days as well as Christmas day! Task list for December As things start to get a bit battered it’s well worth keeping a check on the things that can really cause you problems: • Sheds: check damage to roofing • Fence posts: any starting to wobble and weaken in the winds? • Lawn: try not to walk on frosty lawns as it can damage the blades • Spray fruit trees: Once the leaves have totally fallen, spray with a winter tree wash, (vegetable oil based). This cleans the branches and kills fungal spores and over-wintering insects and their eggs. • Ponds: Stop feeding fish. Clean and service pond pumps. • Our feathered friends: Put out feeders for the birds, as well as fresh water. Put up a natural bird box - shelter in winter and a home to a young avian family in the spring! • Outside taps: watch for freezing and switch them off at the isolator when not needed. (continues...)

breezegardening (...continued from previous page) • Watch out for frost: Keep an eye on plunging night temperatures and cover shrubs that are

likely to be damaged by frost with garden fleece or perhaps sacking. • Have a garden reshuffle: moving pots and planters closer to the house so you can enjoy the

colours and textures of the plants as you keep warm on the inside!. • Clean up ready for next year: once herbaceous perennials have finished flowering and die

back, remove and clean plant supports. Back indoors With the nights now well and truly ‘drawn in’ houseplants require less feeding and watering. Of course, as the temperature drops outside on goes the central heating and the temperature in the house gets nice and toasty for you but a little too stuffy for your plants so make sure they don't dry out. Try to create an indoor garden - situate a moderate sized lined basket near a patio window and get something growing in there. A good example are tomatoes, choose the ‘indeterminate’ varieties which continue growing and producing indefinitely. Cherry and plum types work better than large slicing types. Limit the number of plants - it is a temptation, especially if you are growing plants from seed, and you get a lot of high quality seedlings, to make your ‘mini garden’ overcrowded. Keep enough space, with good lighting for every plant. Get rid of the weakest ones and trim the excessive growth when needed. Why not try your hand at growing your own Avocado plant? If you save the pit from a very ripe avocado, wash it well of any traces of fruit and then dry it off for a few days. After drying, the pit can be suspended in a glass of water and you should see root growth of about two inches. This can now be planted in a pot of soil and tended to as a houseplant. It all adds a little spice to your hobby! So come on let’s try these simple indoor tips and see if we can’t beat the winter blues with our hobby! A Merry Christmas to all you learning gardeners out there - Enjoy!

There are pet themed prizes for the highest scores. All funds raised will be used for caring for injured, stray pets. The timing may be particularly apt since, unfortunately, there is always a rise in these cases just after Christmas as puppies and kittens given as inappropriate gifts are abandoned. All the staff will be providing homemade mince pies so you can judge their in-house bake off at the same time. Mulled wine, mince pies, a Pet Quiz with prizes and all to raise money for a good cause. What could be better? Sample quiz question: Q. Which breed of dog has webbed feet, has historically been used to help tow fishing nets to shore and can be 75kg without being overweight?

Head down to Churchcroft Vets after work (7pm-8.30pm) on Thursday Dec 20th and join the fun.

Maggie’s First Birthday Brings in 100 people! Last month, Maggie’s in Nottingham celebrated their first year open! It took nearly four years to fundraise to get the money to build the centre, and now it has been open for a full year. “So how did we celebrate? We had lots going on in the centre with taster classes of some of the sessions we hold throughout the week. Lots of people dropped in for the Creative Writing, Tai Chi, Yoga and Relaxation classes. Over 100 people came to the centre in total for the birthday celebration and it was great to see the centre so busy and everyone so happy. With mushy peas and mint sauce available it was a true Nottingham party! With bunting out, people were writing lovely birthday messages to Maggie’s Amongst the guests were Sophie Doughty, the ten year old girl who organised the children’s sponsored bike ride. She enjoyed a cup of mushy peas and cake. The Saturday after Maggie’s birthday Sophie, and lots of other children rode on their bikes, scooters and in pushchairs 3 miles round Calverton Village to raise money for our birthday. To date the money is still coming in and being counted, and currently stands at just over £3000! Elsewhere on our birthday was another party for us, at Jenny Davidson’s house. She hosted a coffee morning with her friends, with 30 people showing up and raised over £260 for Maggie’s! At the end of the day, Kate, the Centre Head cut the Maggie’s birthday cake as we sung happy birthday! Maggie’s wants to say thank you to everyone that came to our birthday party and for all the people who fundraised for us”. If you would like to know more about Maggie’s, go to one of their Maggie’s Welcome Experiences, every Wednesday at 4.00pm for one hour to find out more about what they do. Go along, have a cup of tea and experience your Maggie’s Centre. “See for yourself how we can make a difference for people with cancer in Nottingham”.

TAKE ACTION NOW AND TAKE CONTROL IN 2013!

tion breeze promo

Leading local Psychotherapist, Martin Smith PhD runs a well established private practice in the Long Eaton area which specialises in helping people overcome issues around stress, depression, anxiety and a variety of other conditions and issues which can so often blight people’s lives. Martin firmly believes that such conditions do not have to rule and ruin lives; with effective therapy, individuals can take back control of their lives and move on. New Year is often an ideal time to take action, the problem is that many people take action alone and try to solve their problems without vital support. With the right support, individual efforts, which are so often well meaning can be greatly enhanced to the point where life changes can be made, and the blight of anxiety, stress, depression and other related issues can be lifted. Trying to deal with issues like, anxiety, stress, depression and phobias on your own is difficult and when things do not work the issue just gets worse for the person. Martin comments “People have often commented that coming to see me has made tackling issues so much easier and they state it has been worth seeking outside professional help” If you feel ready to take action now and take control call Martin on 07 973 410 010 or email: itctherapy@aol.com to arrange an appointment, he is available for appointments at times to suit, including weekends and evenings.

ion t o m o r p e z e e br Funeral Service chooses Children's Air Ambulance for annual appeal... The Eastwood Funeral Partnership have chosen the Children's Air Ambulance as the nominated charity for their Christmas Remembrance Trees appeal. The appeal by the independent family partnership, which comprises four Funeral Homes in Stapleford, Eastwood, Heanor and Kimberley, is in its 6th year. "The appeal is always well received by clients and members of the public alike" explained partner Joanne Hutsby. "Christmas is a difficult time for those who have lost a loved one, and writing their tribute, and knowing that it will be on our trees throughout December can bring great comfort to people." "It is also a good opportunity for us to help those who help others - the Children's Air Ambulance, which is based here in the Midlands to provide a nationwide transfer service for seriously ill children needs our support to continue saving lives, and we are delighted to be able to help."
