family life and therefore it is vital all aspects are considered. For instance, appliances such as cookers, hobs, dishwashers, fridges etc., come in many guises and price ranges. The ergonomics of lay-out must take account of how to minimise the work in a kitchen. Lifestyle will first establish your choice of style; Victorian, Country Cottage, Contemporary or Ultra Modern. This then leads onto choice of finishes. Work tops can be laminated, wood, silestone, acrylic or granite. Doors can be solid woods such as oak, beech, or maple, high gloss or modern lustre colour finishes. All this leaves a lot to be considered, Lifestyle can lessen the worry in making the choices. With seven different style layouts in their Beeston Showroom plus a large range of work top finishes, door styles, plus fittings and many unique labour saving devises available to make kitchenware storage more accessible. Designing bedrooms give far less concern, but nonetheless layout and planning is carried out with equal precision and endeavour. Lifestyle offer tailored furniture to fit into the most complex shaped bedrooms, offering a large choice in colour and styles.
With six layouts in the showroom it’s the ideal place to start. Nowadays more people choose to work from home. Lifestyle can provide the answer with ideas to maximise clever use of space from simple studies to complete tailored home office solutions. At Lifestyle project management is an important part of the service with major installations that can include a combination of building, electrics, plumbing, and fitting. “With a team of highly skilled craftsmen you can be assured of our dedication to seeing that your project will be completed with care and consideration on budget and on time”. Enjoy the first of our success stories - Breeze finds out how local businesses have weathered the financial storms and enjoyed great success over the years...
G
illotts Funeral Service in Stapleford is part of the Eastwood Funeral Partnership, a family business whose origins go back more than a century to an era when funeral service was very different. In 1867, the Leivers family started the ‘Star Livery Stables’ in Victoria Street, Eastwood, next to what was to become the birthplace of the author DH Lawrence. The business originally supplied horse-drawn hearses to Undertakers throughout a wide area, and has changed over the years to reflect the changing needs of modern families. Today, the business remains family owned and run, and operates funeral homes in Eastwood, Stapleford, Heanor and Kimberley. The Stapleford Funeral Home was the Partnership’s first branch office; established in 1986 at Carrara House on Cemetery Road in Stapleford. In 1997, the funeral home moved to the current much larger premises at 136 Derby Road in Stapleford. The funeral home was originally named Staplefords Funeral Service, but in 2008 was renamed Gillotts Funeral Service to reflect the funeral home’s growing reputation throughout a much wider area, and to strengthen its identity as an independent family business. “Our emphasis is on providing a personal service in a flexible and professional way. After meeting with a family to discuss their wishes, our funeral directors will then do everything they can to make those wishes a reality. For some families this may involve a traditional Church service followed by a burial, for others this may mean a nonreligious service followed by cremation, with a brightly decorated coffin carried in a horse-drawn or motorcycle hearse”.
In the past decade in particular, the number of choices and options available to families has grown enormously, and sometimes time is needed to make certain decisions. “For this reason, families in our care receive our 36-page funeral folder, which contains a host of information to help them over the days leading up to the funeral. This includes a list of well-known hymns suitable for funeral services, information about our service sheet printing service, a number of poems and verses which can be read at the funeral, and a range of containers for cremated remains, ranging from traditional Urns and Caskets, to remembrance jewellery, sundials and even a teddy bear specially designed to hold a portion of cremated remains or keepsakes”. In years past, the subject of money and funerals was often shrouded in mystery. As members of the National Association of Funeral Directors, they have always believed in being open and honest about funeral costs. The funeral folder contains information about their charges and those of third parties, and is available to all from their premises, and can also be downloaded from their website; www.gillottsfuneralservice.co.uk

All clients receive a written estimate of the likely costs when a funeral is arranged. They regularly monitor funeral costs in the local area to provide the highest quality service at a fair price, and they welcome all enquiries. Over the years there have been many changes, but some very important aspects remain the same - the business has retained its family base, and still operates to the same maxim as it did in generations past: “Treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself.” Gillotts Funeral Service 136 Derby Road, Stapleford NG9 7AY Tel: 0115 9491534 www.gillottsfuneralservice.co.uk

WEAR A DAFFODIL Marie Curie Cancer Care is asking people to help ‘paint the town yellow’ this March by wearing a daffodil pin to back its annual Great Daffodil Appeal.
E
very donation for a daffodil will help more Marie Curie Nurses to provide free care to terminally ill people in their own homes or one of the charity’s hospices. Sixty-five per cent of the population would choose to die at home if they were terminally ill, yet the majority die in hospital, the place they least want to be. This year Marie Curie Nurses will provide free care for 29,000 terminally ill people across the UK. Debbie Ventham, one of the charity’s Nursing Ambassadors, tells her own story. “My mum died of cancer on the first day of the millennium and, just a couple of weeks later, my sister Diana was diagnosed with breast cancer. Diana battled with cancer for several years but she made sure she lived life to the full during the time she had left. I looked after her right to the end and she died at home in May 2007 surrounded by all her family, including her husband and four children.
breezemagazine 10
“Like my sister, most people want to be at home – in their own bed, looking out onto their own garden, with their family and friends close by – and Marie Curie Cancer Care makes this possible. “Marie Curie Nurses work shifts, often at night, to give patient’s carers the chance to take a break, spend quality time with their loved one, or simply get a good night’s sleep. Just being there to talk to patients and their families and put their mind at ease about any worries or fears they may have can make all the difference. “In March I’ll be wearing my daffodil pin in memory and celebration of my mother, sister, and all the patients I’ve had the privilege of looking after over the years. Please join me by wearing a daffodil pin and ensuring that every person with a terminal illness has the choice to access free Marie Curie nursing care.” Daffodil pins can be picked up from local stores, schools, street collectors and Marie Curie Shops across the UK throughout March. People with a couple of hours to spare can turn these into Marie Curie nursing hours by joining their local team of volunteer collectors, or by organising their own fundraising event. Why not get your colleagues together and set yourself a new work target - help raise £5m for Marie Curie Cancer Care as part of the Great Daffodil Appeal this March.
For further information about the appeal or to find out how you can help, please call the Daffodil Hotline on 0845 601 3107 (local rate) or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil To access a Marie Curie Nurse, speak to your GP or district nurse. STYLE IDEA You’ve entertained the relatives, put away the seasonal decor it’s now time to turn your attention to your home. With this month’s suggestion we’ve the experts on hand to help you get the look you desire...
S
oft, colourful shades are easy to live with, and a great way to get rooms ready for spring. Pick up on the power of pastels with our guide to pretty pinks, beautiful blues and gorgeous
greens. If you need further convincing, just look around at the new crop of soft pastel colours blooming in homeware. These gentle shades mimic the colours of new growth and plants that we can look forward to seeing blossom in the garden as well as uplifting, sunny skies. So think of a palette of blushing pinks, soft blues - duck egg and teal are particularly popular this year - as well as delicate mossy greens and primrose yellows. Pastels seem to have a perennial appeal, possibly because they’re uber-easy on the eye. There’s something cosy and comforting about them, reminiscent of childhood rooms. They’ve now graduated from the nursery and grown up into ideal colours for conjuring a number of looks, from the faded but glorious grandeur of vintage to a fresh coastal style or cosy country. Fionnuala Johnston, design manager, suggests using a patchwork of fresh blues, whites and pinks to recreate the country living look this spring. “A gentle pastel colour palette can be brought to life with a shock of pink to produce a homely, comfortable and inspiring look,” she says. Pastels work particularly well when used in floral and gingham prints, perhaps intertwined with lace, ribbon and embroidery for a folksy look. Alternatively, be imaginative and revamp a piece of furniture by painting it a pastel shade, or choose wallpaper or bed linen in a pastel pattern. Even a discreet nod to pastels will make your rooms feel ready for spring. continued...

Pretty Pinks Soft pink is an obvious choice for the bedroom but is also worth considering for a small room, like a study, as it creates a warm and optimistic feel. When planning your scheme, try to avoid using more than two pastel colours in the same space, unless you want a very girly look. Pastels are a fresh and cheerful way to lighten up a space, making it look larger and creating a calming effect. Why not try yellow for hallways and kitchens, and a combination of pale yellow and blue for a timelessly stylish living room.
Beautiful Blues Capture the feeling of blue skies and seaside settings with pale blues, or opt for the fashionable duck egg shade for a bang-on-trend look. Team a duck egg blue floral with pinks or maybe lavender, suggests Jo Cassabois, window dressings expert and owner of Pret a Vivre in London. “As pastel tones are so pale, they’re not so suitable used individually for major interior decorations like a window dressing. Singly, the effect can be too washed out,” she says. “Mixing a couple of pastel colours turns them into a strong combination.”
Gorgeous Greens Soft greens are the perfect shades to warm and complement neutrals. They’re totally in vogue because they reflect our desire to bring the outdoors in, with leaf-inspired patterns and foliage hues.

Calm Beauty was set up by Jacqueline in Sandiacre in December 2009. It all started about twenty years ago. “All my friends and work mates used to line up for a massage, I found I was really good at it and decided to become qualified” From there Jacqueline worked in her spare time but like so many people, she found it hard trying to fit everything in whilst still working full time. Jacqueline loves her work this shows in the quality of her service and the care all her clients receive. Jacqueline is a member of the Erewash Partnership and the Derbyshire and Nottingham Chamber of Commerce and takes an active interest in the community. “I enjoy participating in charitable events. I’d like to get more involved. It feels good to give something back”, says Jacqueline. With Calm Beauty, Jacqueline really believes it should be “Your treatment Your way” and you deserve to be pampered. Everyone needs a bit of “Me time”. Life is hurried enough so your treatment should not be rushed. There are a full range of treatments on offer from luxury facials, Hopi ear, Hot stones massage, Manicures and Pedicures to Spray tanning and so much more. Every visit is made to feel like a special occasion. It really is ‘All About You’ because you are all worth it. Calm Beauty Tel 07830 902308 Netherfield Road, Sandiacre NG10 5JN

SOWING THE SEEDS As the new year begins, you may be considering which flowers to grow from seed to create a riot of colour in the months ahead and there is no shortage of new varieties. Breeze has some advice...
T
he seed catalogues all look so tempting, promising masses of blooms in a vast array of colours but what you need to know is whether they produce what they promise, longlasting flowers which will withstand a host of pests and diseases, keeping your garden colourful through till autumn. Friolina trailing pansies and new collections of bacopas and calibracoas are sure to add pizzazz to your hanging baskets and containers. The following will flower this summer from a January to March sowing. They include Foxglove 'Carillon', a dwarf (12in/30cm), primrose-yellow variety with large flowers, and Geum 'Cooky', which produces bright orange, single blooms from June to September, reaching 16in (40cm) in height. To see how a number of new varieties fared, Which? Gardening, the Consumers' Association magazine, trialled 34 new varieties, before they came on the market, revealing the results. Seeds were sown in a heated greenhouse at the
breezemagazine 34
Association's trial gardens at Capel Manor College in north London. Young plants were hardened off in cold frames during May and planted out in June. Overall winner was Rudbeckia 'Cappuccino', whose enormous flowers were up to 24cm across. When many were planted together, they looked like a carpet of bronze, gold and chocolate brown. Bursting into flower in July, these half-hardy perennials (grown as annuals) continued to flower well into November. Other high performers included Marigold 'Double Mr Majestic', described by the magazine as a 'brilliant bedding plant' with dense foliage, strikingly uniform plants which produced hundreds of dazzling gold and maroon striped flowers. Lavender 'Spanish Eyes' also received the thumbs up in the trial, producing a haze of sky blue flowers on long, elegant stems. It remained untouched by disease and flowered from July to September. Other flowering plants which received acclaim included Cosmos 'All Sorts Mixed', which featured picotees (different coloured edging) and plain flowers, singles and semi-doubles in shades of crimson, pink and white, Viola 'Chicky Chicks', a lovely mix of early and late flowering perennial varieties with pretty faces in blue, white, apricot, yellow, pink and purple, and Antirrhinum 'Spangles', selected to include early and late flowering types for a long display.
BEST OF THE BUNCH - Dogwood (Cornus) If you clipped some of the colourful leafless stems from your dogwoods over the festive season, you'll realise what valuable plants they are, producing vibrant stems in shades of red, orange, yellow, pink and purple/black. If you want red stems in winter, look no further than the traditional Cornus alba 'Sibirica', while for something different try out C. sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire', which has orange and pink stems. Dogwoods, which bear clusters of white flowers in spring and white or blue-black fruit in the autumn, can tolerate wet soil well and are useful for planting in clay soil, bog gardens or along riverbanks, as well as normal gardens. They are easy to grow, but when you prune them you must cut out the oldest stems at the end of each winter, as the new shoots replacing them will have the brightest stems. These are shown off to their best in full sun.

The snow has vanished, it’s once again time to have your mower serviced and avoid the upset of its misbehaving when you get it out. Most powered mowers need an annual service and servicing saves money by improving efficiency and prolongs machine life. Helen Bowen is a mobile hairdresser providing hair services such as full head foils, perms, restyle, cut and blow dry and also specialises in bridal hair. Having been through her own wedding day she understands that every bride wants to look and feel beautiful. When a bride books Helen for her wedding she will perform a trial run with the bride and any bridesmaids. At the trial she will put the bride’s hair up in a few styles. Each style is photographed and the photos are emailed to the bride to help make her final decision. For the bridesmaids the same process is followed to make sure the styles compliment the bride. It is usually advised to take place six to eight weeks before the wedding as the hair is its natural state and makes sure everything will run smoothly on the day. HOROSCOPES THE MONTH AHEAD
By ANNE HARBOUR Dip.Hyp. HPD. MNCH - Clinical Hypnotherapist HPD. Member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (MNCH)
ARIES [21ST March-20th April]
CANCER [212ND June-23RD July]
You are certainly not going to sit back with your feet up this month. With plenty to do and with you feeling much stronger in yourself, a plan of action to get things on their way becomes not only challenging, but exciting at the same time. Having adopted a different outlook on life to what it has been in recent months you make a clear picture in your mind of how you would like 2010 to go, and that is your way. Any break ups or difficulties in any relationships during February are dealt with in a mature and sensible way. Having taken more control over how your life is run, you make good and positive moves which in time are beneficial, not only to you but others also.
By making sure everything goes your way you arrange a suitable time to visit an interesting place for a wellearned break. Careful not to rock the boat with finances you plan the time accordingly. Loosing small items in or around the home infuriates you, particularly when the episode keeps you away from meeting up with someone. Checking upon those important days and dates takes some of your precious time but keeps you from rushing around at the last minute, plus gives you that peace of mind. Being in company and overhearing chatter pricks your ears. Taking in what they have said puts a smile on your face and little do they know you know the truth behind it all.
TAURUS [21ST April-20th May]
LEO [214TH July-23rd August]
Taking care not to rock the boat you tread carefully in one area of your life which you feel you have been treated unfairly in at times. By thinking things through you adapt a different attitude and welcome other changes in a different way. Feeling unloved and emotionally insecure, you reach out to someone close, listening to what they have to say but not necessarily taking their good and sensible advice. Some success regarding work pleases you with some financial improvement. By accepting one social invitation you become aware of an admirer of yours and enjoy the evening much better than you thought possible. Any minor health problems are dealt with easily.
Feeling more secure and confident in your own abilities you step forward making some alterations, which you feel, are long overdue. Two or more people consider another person’s point of view and from that you make a firm decision. With the outlook positive you oversee a plan of action not by choice but necessity. With a busy schedule during the month you manage to fulfil one wish of yours and please others at the same time. Going with the flow mid month you put your feet up with family or friends enjoying a few hours of good old solid basic discussions of life in general. With plenty of good humour and laughter you become pleased how time was spent.
GEMINI [21ST May-21ST June]
VIRGO [24TH August-23rd September]
With your charismatic persona you tread where no other dare regarding romance. For the single this is a month of excitement, with many an opportunity to make that special relationship more special. Making up for lost time goes well and in turn allows you both to look forward to the future in a positive and secure way. It appears to become important to you during the month, that time is spent with friends or family who you haven’t been in touch with for some time. A gathering socially leads to better times for all. Any disappointments experience of late becomes yesterday’s news. Ideas for earning extra pennies become reality with welcoming prospects.
breezemagazine 40
By distancing yourself a little from those who take your time and energy you recharge your batteries quickly and soon get down to important business. By not Seeing Eye to eye with those you love some concessions are made to find a happy outcome for those involved. Any unexpected visits from family around the 11th to the 26th of February make a pleasant change to the humdrum of routine, which has taken so much of your spare time. Planning ahead from the ideas you have had regarding how to spend spare time in the future keeps you well occupied toward the end of the month. Outings to the pictures or the theatre as well as travelling long distance are accommodated.
LIBRA [24TH September-22nd October] Finding an alternative solution to something that has been of concern to you relieves any pressure or tension felt recently. Loved ones become supportive when you make one decision to change certain plans and go more with what you know best. Others welcome any ideas drawn from present experiences and are put into practice. Relying on forms of travel becomes a headache when either someone or the vehicle you are using lets you down. For the time it takes to correct matters all turns out well with nothing lost and the episode put behind you. Happy hours spent with family away from home put an end to an uncertain time. A good positive outlook for the future.
SCORPIO [23RD October-22nd November] With a new and exciting chapter in your life about to open up for you February becomes the start to new beginnings. Being in demand proves you have still got what it takes regarding both your professional and social life. Taking new and exciting ideas aside then putting them into practice confirms to others what your capabilities are. Having a certain amount of freedom to achieve your goals becomes important and with some recognition coming your way, the following weeks are most welcoming. Standing your ground becomes easy when the other person is well out of order. You make your point and move on. With romance in the air the month becomes complete.
SAGITTARIUS [23RD November-22nd December] In as much as you try, the month seems a little tipsy curvy. As soon as you work out why, the correction is made and the rest of February becomes calmer. By taking things in your stride in the second week, many achievements come to light around your working life. Travelling becomes highlighted third week, when against your will and with little or no time to spare you help out if and when. Taking no chances you keep your cards close to your chest giving nothing away. Needing some time alone you make arrangements where you can reflect from the past months experiences.
CAPRICORN [23RD December-20th January] With added responsibilities coming your way you organise the month to your liking. With others in mind and with a little help and support you accomplish and complete something you feel has been neglected in your home. Taking a new course of action you collect information and books, which are relevant to certain plans for later in the year. A gathering of friends helps you see clearly what is achievable now and in the future. Muck and mess may well be on the way for many. Building alterations within or outside the home is likely to occur any time. Organisation becomes the key to success. Plans to make anniversaries or events memorable you enjoy the planning.
AQUARIUS [21ST January19th February] Your intentions to keep busy and well occupied pay off when feeling a little under the weather beginning of the month. The feelings soon disappear and you’re back on form. Guarding against any intruder you reach out for information regarding a future event including someone either in the family or a close friend. Taking time you check whether things have worked out well for them. With lots to do this month you make sure you balance areas of your life out so as not to burn your candle at both ends. Being wined and dined on a special day releases happy and fulfilling emotions. On the ball you secure your future in a positive form with no doubts about your capabilities
PISCES [20TH February-20th March] February is a month in which you try to go with the flow most of the time. Wanting to show appreciation to a loved one you tread carefully discovering there is plenty to talk about. Not able to see one way out regarding a small concern you take note and accept advice given freely, taking away any pressure and tension surrounding you. Helping out you take over and show another person an easier option regarding a problem they have and cannot solve. Loosing keys could well keep you from earning money. Feeling more yourself toward the end of the month you enjoy time out with close friends and family. With younger members of the family joining in, plenty of laughter.

The shows begin at 7.15pm from Wednesday 17th February until Saturday 20th February. Tickets are on sale now and cost £4.50 for adults and £2.50 for children (and include refreshments). To book your ticket call 985-4659 or 925-3470 or pay at the door on the night.

On March 6th at 7.30 pm ‘Land of the Harp’ is the concert linked to St. David’s Day which Liath Hollins (lever harp clarsach) and Kathryn Lewis (pedal harp) will perform at Chilwell Road Methodist Church. This will include some Welsh pieces along with other classical and traditional harp music. Tickets are £6 (£5 in advance), Student/Child £3 and are available from the church office - 0115 9431164.
Harpist Liath Hollins’ lifelong fascination with the harp has blossomed in to a successful freelance career. She specialises in traditional music from across the UK, combining harp and voice in beautiful combination. Born in to a musical family, Liath plays a variety of instruments but was especially drawn to the harp, choosing to study with some of the UK’s most respected traditional music specialists - including Ashbourne native and renaissance specialist Jean Hudson, renowned Scottish harper Charlotte Peterson and harping superstar Catriona MacKay - while developing her own distinct style. An engaging and accomplished performer, Liath is much in demand at folk venues and this year completed a season of solo concerts at the Buxton Festival Fringe, spell-binding audiences with her own arrangements. Originally from South Wales, Kathryn Lewis grew up surrounded by harps and harpists.
