breeze100 not out! ‘Old Fred’, as he is affectionately known, was speechless for once in his life when the Attenborough Friendship Group held a surprise party to celebrate his 100th Birthday.
PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF BRIAN PETTITT
With the Queen’s Card, a basket of flowers from Broxtowe Borough Council - presented by the Mayor, Cllr. Jacky Williams and a special Birthday Cake, Fred Riley was reduced to tears as he thanked everybody in a packed Village Hall at Attenborough. Fred, born in Styring Street, Beeston, has lived in Attenborough since 1969 and is a very well known character in the village where he still lives on his own, looked after on a regular basis by his 73-year-old eldest daughter Pat, who pops over from Long Eaton several times a week. Fred, a widower, also has another daughter, Barbara who lives in South Wales. He has three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Fred well remembers his childhood and his schools, Meadow Lane and Nether Street. He also recalls his motor cycling days when he competed in motocross and grass track events. A joiner all his working life - and he worked until he was 83 ! he remembers with pride that he was with Hoftons for thirty years. He suffered a severe injury to his left hand when he was 19 which denied him from entering the war - but keen to do his bit he joined the Auxillary Fire Service part-time. On such a wonderful occasion as his 100th Birthday Party, the last words certainly belong to Fred Riley. “I like a shot of whisky and the occasional cigar. A small one mind you -and, oh, by the way, I don’t know why everybody has always called me Fred. My names John.” Good old Fred!

Domestic Abuse affects 1 in 4 women at some point in their lives. The abuse can be towards a woman, man or child. It takes many forms, emotional, sexual, physical, financial or verbal. Domestic Abuse does not discriminate against age, sex, race, colour, religion, culture or background. Breeze meets an organisation that can help...
Midlands Women's Aid Charity is a specialist Domestic Abuse service provider. We were established in February 1974 to support women and children experiencing Domestic Abuse. We provide Refuge for women and children admitting clients from all parts of the Country. Our Outreach and Children's Service are delivered in the South of the Borough of Broxtowe providing support to women and children who for what ever reason cannot access Refuge. We deliver Domestic Abuse awareness training clients and agencies. Also, we provide courses on confidence building, healthy relationship, early intervention and prevention to name but a few. We have an advice and information centre at 112, Derby Road, Stapleford, Nottingham, NG9 7AU and run a drop-in every Wednesday between10.30am - 1pm, where women and children can access advice. We are often asked "Why do women stay" It is because there are many barriers which prevent women leaving. Elizabeth is an ex client and tells her story.
l breeze appea ELIZABETH'S STORY:
“I stayed because I believed him and thought no-one could help”. I'm fat, ugly, lazy and a bad mother. No-one else will want me. I can't cook, I have no money, I can't take the kids away from their family, friends and all they know, where would I go?, I'm mad, no-one will believe me, I could not cope on my own. I have no friends, my family have disowned me, he and the kids are all I've left. He says he'll kill me. I heard it so often during our six year relationship, I believed it. I left him once before but he found me like he said he would. ‘He taught me lesson’. On this occasion he had hurt me quite badly. I had to go to the hospital. He refused to leave me alone but a nurse insisted he left. She asked me how I had sustained my injuries. I told her I had ‘fallen downstairs’. She did not believe me and insisted I contacted Midlands Women's Aid. She said they could help. I wish I'd listened to her then but it took a further assault by him to make me contact them. It was the best decision I ever made. I went with my children to a Refuge. I was scared and upset. I was surprised how comfortable and clean the accommodation was. My children settled in quite quickly. The staff were very supportive. They listened, believed me and gave me the strength to survive. They encouraged me back into education. They made me realize that it was not my fault. I got back in touch with my family who had only stayed away because of him. I made many good friends in Refuge and they and the staff showed me I was not alone. Life in Refuge wasn't all easy but it was much easier than what I had put up with living in an abusive relationship. It's now five years since I left my old life behind. I have a good job, my children are happy and doing well at school and I have got my old self back. I still keep in touch with Midlands Women's Aid and support their work where I can. "I'm not fat or lazy, I'm a good mother, I can cook, I'm sane, I have my own income, a healthy relationship with a new partner and most importantly I'm free, safe and alive" IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT ! YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IT! Contact Midlands Women’s Aid. 112, Derby Road, Stapleford, Nottingham, NG9 7AU or visit the drop-in every Wednesday between10.30am - 1pm, where women and children can access advice.

Now, five years later, Rare Disease Day is marked by patients, families and those with an interest in rare diseases across the world. 2012 is an especially significant year in the Rare Disease Day movement as it represents a return to the official date – the 29th February (a rare day that occurs only every four years).

Up to fifty crews representing companies, organisations, clubs and groups of friends from all over the East Midlands are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course on the River Trent at Victoria Embankment. reigning champions whilst raising much-needed funds for the Hospice. According to the Chinese calendar, 2012 is the Year of the Dragon which may result in some interesting races as the dragon is said to be all powerful but completely unpredictable! It also symbolises great success and happiness, so the winning teams should be even more excited than usual in their victories! No previous experience is required to take part in the dragon boat racing, just plenty of team spirit so why not take up the challenge? Thankfully, you don’t need the physical strength of a Steve Redgrave or the athleticism of a Jessica Ennis to be successful as teamwork and timing win the day. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. Teams and spectators also benefit from being part of one of the region’s largest family
festivals with a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world, staged by Nottingham City Council. In the 1970s, Liz Luddy first discovered a Dress Agency in Newark, loved the idea of selling nearly-new clothes and accessories at genuinely affordable prices and wanted to develop the idea into a stylish, guilt-free and thoroughly enjoyable fashion shopping experience. Coming from a design background Liz and her husband Tom were able to create Renaissance’s impressive interior with its warm and welcoming atmosphere where very carefully selected fashions and accessories are presented using colour coordination and extensive displays. Mindful that customers often experience difficulty in finding what they want in fashion agencies, there are separate areas for women’s fashion, men’s fashion and younger fashion, within which are sections for designer labels, occasion wear, ‘extra fashion’ and even maternity wear. Items selected by Liz are displayed in the Shop for eight weeks and, if not sold, are returned to their owner which means, of course, that stock is changing on a daily basis - something rarely, if ever, found on the high street! With the onset of the recession, every season is now bringing in a record-breaking amount of sellers resulting, of course, in the best stock ever and featuring all the favourite labels such as Paul Smith, Hobbs, Jaeger, Karen Millen, Whistles, Coast, Ted Baker, Fat Face, Topshop, Warehouse, Zara, Radley, Kurt Geiger and many many more, all either new or nearly-new and in pristine condition!

WISHING FOR CHANGE OR MAKING THE CHANGE? We all wish something about our past could have been different but realise that such a wish is unrealistic and move on with our lives. The problem comes when we keep dwelling on the past, wishing for change, which never comes. Worrying about what will happen in the future or having increasing negative feelings about the future is the foundation of anxiety. Getting out of these loops on our own can be difficult – with outside help and guidance change is possible and new perspectives on what has been or what will be; can be achieved. Martin Smith is a local psychotherapist who has been helping people break out of negative and destructive loops of thinking and behaviour for over twelve years. Getting people to realise change is possible can be difficult but by no means an impossible task. If your life is being ruined by constant negative reflections on your past or on current or future events, Martin can help. At Ellis-Fermor & Negus they take a client centred approach to their work with you. “It is important to us that you feel in control of your own situation, that you feel heard and understood and that you are able to communicate easily with us. With that in mind, our Family Department offers Specialist Lawyers skilled in a range of skills through which we offer a variety of services to help you to resolve your family issues. “One size does not fit all” and so, together we are able to choose a route tailored to suit your particular circumstances and needs, and what can be afforded. Most clients prefer, whenever possible, to settle matters without the worry, uncertainty and expense of court proceedings. We therefore offer a ‘Collaborative Service’ where we will meet with you and your partner and their lawyer to discuss issues in a spirit of compromise in round table meetings. Underpinning the process is a mutual agreement not to issue court proceedings during the process. Once the process has concluded orders are often applied for by consent to legally record the agreement. We also offer Mediation, a process in which we cannot offer legal advice but our Mediator will meet with both parties to resolve issues around the table. PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF BRIAN PETTITT
Three local women have been presented with special awards by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire to show how much their enthusiasm and commitment is appreciated across Attenborough and Toton. Angela Smith, Helen Kirk and Veronica Watson were presented with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s Oak Leaf badges by Assistant County Commissioner Joanne Bardgett. They had been nominated for the awards on behalf of the Attenborough District by new Assistant District Commissioner Carolyn Huckerby, who says ‘We wanted to recognise the hard work which Angela, Helen and Veronica have put in over the last three years to make the Attenborough District so successful.’ Carolyn goes on to explain: ‘When the previous Commissioner stepped down in 2008, Angela, Helen and Veronica suggested running things as a team. With nearly 300 members, Attenborough is one of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s busiest Districts and at that stage noone felt able to commit to running it alone for a three-year tenure. The concept of managing local Guiding in this way was relatively new, but they proved it can work very successfully.’ Success indeed: during their term of office, three new units opened in the district - including a Rainbow Unit (for girls aged 5-7), a Guide Unit (ages 10-14) and a Senior Section Unit for young women aged 14 and over. Eighteen new adult leaders were also recruited, helping to ensure that Guiding in this part of Nottinghamshire continues to flourish. Between them, Angela, Helen and Veronica also managed several sub-teams who were responsible for specific activities like raising funds to enable local girls to enjoy Girlguiding UK’s year-long programme of centenary celebrations. This included a Christmas Fair, bagpacking in local supermarkets, carol singing and a disco, together with a calendar featuring photographs from every unit. As part of the three-way split, Angela Smith took on responsibility for managing the Guide section across the Attenborough District. In addition to running the 1st Toton Guides, she provided much-valued support to new Guiders and led local contingents on camps. This culminated in taking an 80-strong party from Attenborough to Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s Knotts 2010 centenary camp. While Angela was looking after the Guides, Helen Kirk offered to be District Commissioner for the Brownie section. This role ranged from coordinating a memorable Adventure Day to assuming the role of leader with 4th Attenborough Brownies while the assistant leader was completing her training. Helen is now Division Commissioner for Beeston and continues to run 2nd Toton Rainbows. The third member of the team is Veronica Watson, who is now Assistant Commissioner for the Beeston Division. As well as running 3rd Attenborough Rainbows, Veronica volunteered to be District Commissioner for the Rainbow section, which included helping to establish the 4th Attenborough Rainbows, coordinating the celebrations for Rainbows’ 21st birthday and ensuring that even the youngest member of the local Rainbows took part in the centenary events. ‘The Oak Leaf award is unique to Girlguiding Nottinghamshire and highlights how much we value the time and energy which people like Angela, Helen and Veronica put in to ensure our members make the most of life,’ says Carolyn Huckerby. ‘We may be one of the county’s busiest districts but we still have girls waiting to join, and always welcome enquiries from adults who feel they have something to offer.’ For details on volunteering with the Beeston Division of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire, call Helen Kirk on 0115 9677896, contact county headquarters on 0115 987 7220, e-mail secretary@girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

SOIL TYPES There are five main types of soil found in this country: • Clay. very fined grained and smooth when wet. Can be very difficult to work with as it doesn’t drain as such but on the plus side it does have good moisture retention during dry spells. Best dug in the Autumn so allowing the frost to help break it up ready for spring. The use of lime - sprinkled on and dug in - helps to reduce its stickiness and opens up the soil. Also, this will be wetter for longer so it tends to be a ‘late’ planting soil i.e planting can’t take place early in the spring so any food crops will be ready later than crops grown in more sandy soils.
This month we take a look at all round general gardening knowledge ahead of the spring season yet to come. It seems as if an ‘expert’ gardener has some magical power that enables them to grow virtually anything out of anything and, if things go wrong, intuitively know how to put things right - such as pest control. This mistaken idea comes from the novice’s lack of basic knowledge in understanding what plant types need in order to grow and flourish. By looking at a few basic factors which come into play in every garden environment we hope to empower the novice and take them on a stage further, after which they can literally take their hobby as far as they wish to. In looking at these easy to understand fundementals we really are giving those who have not succeeded before the chance to enjoy the sense of reward that gardening can give - in all its many aspects. So don’t give up - read on and pick up a few straightforwad to use tips and enjoy the journey with us.... BASIC PLANT TYPES • Hardy Perennials. These will survive outside, growing back back each year (Perennial) and includes shrubs, trees
along with herbaceous plants that will often die down during the winter, growing from roots or crowns again the following spring. These need to be placed with care and thought if they are to thrive as they will be there for many years. • Tender Perennial. Often known as half-hardy perennial - they all need protection from frost. These plants include most greenhouse or house plants, and those plants which go dormant in winter e.g dahlias. • Hardy Biennial. Many root vegetables are hardy biennials, because they are sown one year and flower the next. • Hardy Annual. These can withstand frost, but usually grow, flower and die within one year. As they can cope with cold temperatures, some can be sown in the autumn to produce flowers the following summer. Excellent for containers or as a supplement to herbaceous perennials and shrubs. • Tender Annual. If these plants get frost damaged, they will die, so only plant out when the last of the frost occurs - usually around the middle of May. These plants can be grown under glass earlier than this, so when planted out they will have a good start. If you don’t have a coldframe or greenhouse they can be sown outside in early May. With the Autumn frosts they will soon die though.

• Sand. This is a lighter soil type (less than 10% clay content) and, due to it’s content, tends to warm up much more quickly in spring which allows for earlier planting. It can be worked year round but does need more care with watering and plant food as it contains less plant nutrition than clay soil. • Loam. In short this is a blend between the two soil types above. This mix of clay and sand (which can vary depending on location) is considered to be the best soil for a larger range of plants. Having the nutrition that is present in clay with the better drainage of sand type soil yields a nice balance which makes life easier for the gardener - especially the novice! • Chalk. Usually deficient in plant nutrition and requires additional help in the form of manure etc. Like clay this type of soild gets sticky and difficult to manage but yet does not retain moisture either! They dry easily in hot spells. • Peat. This is usually found in low lying areas and is derived from marsh land which has been subject to thousands of years of growth and decay. Referred to as ‘sour’ due to their lack of lime, these soils contain more than 20% humus (the part of soil which is made of old decayed leaves and other plant material along with any dead insects etc - the biological component of soil). Peat soils are, in a sense, the opposite of chalky soils in that they are acid and therefore the use of lime and other additions such as sand (to improve drainage) greatly benefit them for gardening purposes.

breezegardening The subsoil - that which is below about a foot in depth (or less in some cases as some gardens are only a few inches over hard rock) is also part of any outdoor soil structure. The subsoil may be similar in nature to the ‘top soil’ but may not contain the goodness of that which is above it. The general approach in gardening is to get the top soil to as great a depth as possible. Drainage is the key aspect of what the subsoil may be responsible for - with a clay subsoil causing problems during periods of wetter weather for instance (this can be big problem with lawns). Long term problems with a growing area may well have to take the subsoil into account. Soil acidity balance Many will be aware of the Ph scale and it is nothing to be frightened of! It is simply a way to measure & define how much or how little acid/alkaline there is, in a soil in this case. That’s it. The reason it matters is that if your plants don’t seem to grow well in your garden you may well be trying to plant out flowers or crops that are not suited to the Ph within the soil. If your plants are growing healthily then it’s safe to assume all is well and there is no need to test the soil. Test kits are available from garden centres etc - and are inexpensive, involving a few simple steps to get a result instantly so you know where you are soil wise. In general you can add lime to raise the PH level and a form of sulphure to lower it - both available widely within
breezemagazine 36
garden outlets. Changing the Ph can take several applications of whichever you are applying - and it is best not to rush in and simply ‘dump’ lime or sulphur to try and get a quick fix. Give the soil several months to absorb the compounds and then retest. Further ‘top up’ applications may well be needed from time to time in future to prevent the PH drifting back to what it was. It is sometimes easier to simply find plants that suit the existing Ph in your garden environment. We will cover more on plant types for each garden scenario in a future issue. In the meantime do your homework and maybe get out and test your soil, ahead of the growing season. Take a look at your soil with the knowledge gained in this article and gain a mental picture of what type of garden type you have. Then, when you next go to buy some plants to brighten up your garden, or to grow some new crops, you will be a long way ahead in achieving what you hoped rather than seeing your efforts wasted. As always, enjoy your gardening and use this ‘quiet time’ to learn a few of the basics - and impress your friends this summer with your new found ‘green fingers’ Enjoy!
