young at heart Getting older should be a happy affair, with a happy body, a happy mind. Sometimes we need a little help and guidance. Whether it is with health and well being or more practical issues such as insurance and will making. Here are some suggestions to help along the way- enjoy life the way you were meant to!

The Nottingham & District Pre-Retirement Council is a charity based in Beeston, and is celebrating its 45th anniversary of helping those approaching retirement to do so with confidence and understanding of what can be an uncertain time. Its two part-time members of staff have 53 years service between them and the rest are volunteers, all contributing to this remarkable achievement of 45 years providing service. But just who are the Nottingham & Pre-Retirement Council? Linda and Phil Whitt (pictured) are the two tirelessly working part-time staff, who has guided the charity into its 45th year of service with the aid of selfless volunteers. They have lent their expertise and knowledge to provide those approaching retirement to be truly prepared through courses which run throughout the year. These courses have been run and aimed at all types of professions with attendees being former Lord Mayors, Surgeons, Teachers, Probation Officers, Nurses and Chief Executive Officers to name but a few, with the feedback suggesting that attending a course is a must before retirement. With delegates constantly leaving positive feedback after attending, one saying it was the best course they had been on in 28 years of teaching, being enjoyable, interesting and extremely useful. Courses are often held over a three day period, at the Beeston Town Hall covering a range of topics and including lunch for all those attending. Throughout this period the delegates will listen to a number of guest speakers on their specialist topics and have the chance to chat 1:1 with the speakers to clear up any queries or questions delegates may have. The topics covered range from Finance, Health, Pensions and how to make the most of your retirement while providing the attendees with a resource pack to take home and use when needed. This resource pack will provide information on the topics covered at the courses and are a great refresher for use after attending or even after retirement. It is recommended that people within three years of retirement look to attend a course, although they also offer courses aimed at people aged between 40-50 years and those facing redundancy. These Mid-Life courses are often one day courses, which are aimed at those thinking of retirement in 15-20 years to provide an insight into the tasks ahead the may face. The Nottingham & District Pre-Retirement Council offer these courses to everyone, with open courses for all to attend, while also providing

courses for the benefits of those in companies such as the NHS, ZF Great Britain and Probation Trust. All of the courses run by the NDPRC have a small cost attached to them to cover the likes of lunch but they pride themselves on being terrific value for money, with reviews proving that you get so much out of attending one of their courses. To find out more about the Nottingham & District Pre-Retirement Council, its courses and dates visit their website www.ndprc.org.uk

“Already, some of my patients are planning early trips to warmer climes by dusting off their sandals. It’s quite natural to concentrate on wrapping up warmly during winter months and with heavy snow falls and icy surfaces, boots have invariably been the order of the day. Even if your holiday break is not as imminent as with more fortunate souls, we can all begin on a determined regime that will reap rewards in the coming months. Not only do we want our feet to look attractive, even more importantly, good condition and pain free is even better reasoning. As we age, natural oils become less plentiful and so should supplement them but we don’t necessarily have to buy expensive products to achieve the objective. We all have our favourite products but the main requirement is ‘time.’ Most people, especially ladies I have to say, make time to protect face, neck, hands and legs with moisturiser and this is an excellent daily routine that really shows the result of such dedication to looking good. But, what about the undercover areas such as our feet? When you have creamed your hands, be honest, do you simply give a cursory dab of leftovers to your feet or are you just too tired at the end of the day to bother at all? “I’ll do it tomorrow” is the easy option but how virtuous you will feel if you make an extra few minutes purely devoted to your feet. Feet can become very dry, cracked heels, chilblains, sore toes and a simple regime need not take very long but done regularly, you will reap the benefit. Before washing, use a long handled rasp, using rough side first on rough areas followed by smoother side to finish. Then wash, rinse and dry thoroughly followed by a nice massage. With cream on your hands, every little bump or blemish seems amplified and can be dealt with appropriately. Importantly, this massage is stimulating circulation to sometimes neglected toes. The result of all this inexpensive self-help is ‘happy feet’ but should you encounter any problems you can’t deal with yourself, I will be pleased to visit you at home”. NEVER TOO EARLY TO PLAN Planning for the future is important for all of us. Sadly, making sure that everything’s in place should you or a family member become ill, need care or pass away is all too often on the ‘to do’ list. Sometimes on the ‘too difficult’ list. Planning ahead can make life so much easier for those who are left to pick up the pieces. Making a Will is something most of us have not yet done. Setting out your wishes can avoid family disputes and can often save Inheritance Tax. If you have no Will the Government’s intestacy rules decide who gets your assets. Preparing a Lasting Power of Attorney whilst you still have all your marbles will allow your trusted family member, friend or professional advisor to take over conduct of your finances or make decisions about your welfare when you cannot do so yourself. Making gifts during your lifetime can save tax – but you need to make sure that you stay within the rules. Planning for Care Fees is an issue that many are concerned about. There’s talk of the Government announcing that long term care bills will be capped at £75,000 and that pensioners will be expected to take out private insurance to cover them up to the new limit. What will this mean for your family? Many fear that thousands will still be forced to sell their homes to fund the payments. Despite the wealth of information now available online, there is no substitute for getting face to face professional legal advice about your own family situation. For help in writing Wills, creating powers of attorney, and planning for the future, contact a qualified and experienced solicitor such as Jayne Smith at Rothera Dowson on 0800 158 5316. breezemagazine 10

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHEN MAKING A WILL. Does everyone have to make a Will? It all depends on whether you care who receives what you leave behind when you die (your estate). If you leave no Will then the law stipulates who will inherit your estate – this may not be what you would have wanted. A Will enables you to choose who receives what! In extreme cases, if someone leaves no Will everything they own could end up passing to the Government! I am not married to my partner. Will they receive anything if I leave no Will? It does not matter how long you have lived together. Unless you are legally married or in a civil partnership, then, apart from assets which you may own together (e.g. a joint bank account), your partner will not be automatically entitled to any part of your estate if you leave no Will. Can’t I just make a home-made Will or a simple one from the Post Office or WH Smith? Yes you can, but you want to be sure that it will do what you want! A Will is both a technical and a very important document. “At EllisFermor & Negus we can help you to make a legally effective Will that will accurately express what you wish to happen when you have died”. If you would like to receive further information or have any questions about these or any other probate matters, please contact Sarah Jordan, Jo Bridges or William Skinner at our Beeston Office on 0115 922 1591 or email: s.jordan@ellis-fermor.co.uk

Riverside Drama Company are to perform Tim Firth’s dark comedy ‘Neville’s Island’ at the Duchess Theatre, Chatsworth Centre, West Gate, Long Eaton, from Wednesday 20th - Saturday 23rd March (7.30pm). 2012 was an extraordinary year for Riverside. They celebrated their 20th anniversary year by performing at the RSC Swan Theatre in Stratford as part of the Open Stages project to showcase the best of amateur theatre from around the UK. They followed this with a string of sold-out performances of the legendary Calendar Girls. For their first production of 2013, Riverside hand over the reins to the men of the society who present Neville’s Island. Laughs which come at a cracking pace in this dark comedy, which tells the tale of four middle-aged, middle-managers shipwrecked on a small island in the Lake District as part of a training event. We see their careers and relationships hit the rocks along with their boat as cold, hunger and paranoia kick in. What should have been a bonding process for Gordon, Angus, Roy and Neville turns into a muddy, bloody fight for survival. Because when night settles in, strange things happen out in the wilds. And what took place on Neville's Island that foggy November weekend none of this particular middle-management team would ever forget. Featuring Mike Evans as the hectoring, intimidating Gordon, Martin Holtom as patient Neville, the calm and reliable team leader, Paul Norris as the repressed Angus, and Dan Bates as Roy, the religious birdwatcher with a troubled past. Director Rachel Kirkland says “With such a strong ensemble you will be captivated as you travel with them through a whole weekend marooned on the island. Bound in fog, menaced by wildlife and cut off from the world, this perfunctory middle-class exercise turns into a carnival of recriminations, French cricket and sausages...” With a breath-taking set, featuring water, real life trees, amazing lighting and stand-out performances, this really is one not to be missed. Tickets for Neville’s Island are priced £7 full and £6 concessions and are available via the groups web site www.riversidedrama.com from the Chatsworth Centre coffee mornings on Saturdays (10am-noon), or by calling 0115 9170327. The group rehearse every Thursday night at Bramcote Church of England Primary School (7.30pm) and new members are always made welcome. Riverside offer the chance for people of all ages, abilities and experience (or lack of) to try their hand at acting. But for those who have no wish to tread the boards, the group also offer a wealth of opportunities to become involved with all aspects of modern theatre from backstage to front of house. If you would like to become involved, simply turn up any Thursday at the Bramcote Church of England School or you can e-mail contact@riversidedrama.com or telephone the above number.

When Chief Constable Henry Potterton and his sister Sarah arrive at the country house of their late lamented brother, they are astonished to find several scantily –clad ladies wandering about, not knowing that Bernard’s housekeeper has turned the place into a ‘house of sin’. Being fearful of the questions the Chief Constable may ask, she hurriedly tries to hide the truth from him. This leads to many hilarious comings and goings and when Bernard turns up from the ‘Orkneys’ (or is it from ‘Heaven’), the household is thrown into further confusion and chaos All seats are bookable. The Cast will perform another fun evening... “Eurobeat – Almost Eurovision” at the Duchess Theatre in Long Eaton at the end of this month.

Audiences will have the chance to enjoy a new show from The Cast, one of the region’s liveliest theatre groups. Anyone lucky enough to have seen their “Hot Mikado” show last spring will know what a talented, hard-working group this is, who transmit their own enthusiasm for acting and singing, making for a thoroughly impressive spectacle to be enjoyed by all. This month The Cast will be performing Eurobeat, which will be the first time this production has been put on in the region following its success in London’s West End last decade. The idea of the show is a simple one:- think of all that we love about the Eurovision song contest (a chance to take the mickey out of nearby nations) and transfer this to a live stage show. It’s all there, from the enjoyably dreadful songs and tongue-in-cheek homage from great europop bands like Abba and Kraftwerk, to the cheesy enthusiasm of those plucky presenters and of course the unbearable tension of the race to avoid “nil points” as the scores come in. As the show’s director, Rob Corner, says “It’s all about giving the audience a fun, good evening out. There will be lots they will recognise to laugh at, plus the witty script is worth listening out for, and of course they will get to vote for their favourites at the end.” Yes, that’s right… this is live theatre where the audience decide the ending! During the show the audience are invited to text in their favourite acts, meaning that every night a different country may win. “This is what makes this show special” continues Rob, “there is a genuine tension when the results are delivered, so this is one show where no-one can say the outcome is predictable!” The Cast have again invited talented performers from many different groups to join forces for this show. The award-winning Alexandra Tavener from Erewash Musical Society is partnered by the charming Chris Collington as the two hosts of the show. Many other familiar faces to local theatre will be appearing – Craig Arme, Claire Farrand -Preston, Rachael Brown to name but three. “It’s brilliant getting so many of us together to work on a production, it really reminds us why being on stage is so much fun, and that energy spills over making it a great laugh for the audience as well as ourselves”, comments the versatile James Rayner, who is also in charge of the music for this show. So whether you come on your own or with family or friends, this show promises to be worth catching. ‘Eurobeat – Almost Eurovision’ will be at the Duchess Theatre in the Chatsworth Centre, Long Eaton on Weds 27th Feb – Sat 2nd March, each evening at 7.30 (also a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm). Tickets at £9.50 each, (concessions are available for some performances),can be purchased from the theatre or by calling 07727 629911.

Having worked his way up to a position of seniority with a large firm of national accountants, Karl Watts of Sunny Accountancy Services recently realised what he was missing – client contact – the opportunity to sit down with small to medium ambitious firms, who were eager to grow their businesses. As Karl says “In large firms, the client contact, the part of my job I love the most, is missing. I like nothing more than sitting down with my clients, giving them proactive advice and suggestions to help them realise their dreams. I genuinely feel there is a gap in the market for this level of service.” Karl has already achieved chartered accountant status but his studying hasn’t stopped there. He is currently working on achieving chartered tax adviser status, which he feels will help him provide an even better service to new businesses. Karl explains “Clients can easily find an accountant to file their accounts and tax return but how many accountants also offer tax planning advice at no extra cost?” To arrange a free no obligation meeting with Sunny Accountancy Services, or simply to enquire about price levels, please call on 01623 232592 or 07565 982077 or email: enquiries@sunnyaccs.co.uk. There is even the facility on their website to obtain a quotation at www.sunnyaccs.co.uk

We are both uPVC window fabricators with over twenty five years experience between us. During this time we have seen a lot of changes in the industry and we have to work to these standards. PWS Nottingham was established to offer a service for repairing uPVC doors and windows rather than replacing them. The Terrace Tea Rooms, formerly ‘The Terrace Cafe' is a family run business located near Bardill’s Roundabout off the A52, next to the Japanese Water Gardens. Lee Wharton and his family invite you to enjoy a cup of tea in a friendly, comfortable, relaxed environment, in a traditional 1940’s-50’s tea room, with music from the era accompanying your visit! Lee comes from Lee Bay, near Ilfracombe, in Devon, where his family has run a tea shop for many decades. Now he would like to bring his experience and tradition of a tea shop to recreate it for you in the heart of the area. “All our food is freshly prepared, using local and Devon sources wherever possible. The tea rooms provide a wide range of meals; from all day breakfast, jacket potatoes, filled baguettes to Sunday lunch with a choice of meats and all the trimmings. A take away service is also available. Savoury or Cream tea is, of course, our speciality, with generously filled sandwiches, a crumpet, scone, English muffin or tea cake, and a piece of home-made cake. This can be washed down with your favourite tea or coffee. You can also browse and treat yourself to locally made produce such as jams, pickles, fudge or sweet treats for sale. All this to provide that unique teashop experience! We have a proper Devon welcome and the nearby countryside, but all we have missing is the sea and the sand!” The Terrace Tea Rooms, Japanese Water Gardens, 261 Stapleford Lane, Toton. Free Parking

Perfect Pancakes For many of us we have fond memories of grandmas and mothers cooking up a delight on Shrove Tuesdays during our childhoods. Here’s a quick reminder of how to great the delicious delights this month with a filling that will make you want to go backfor more! Preparation notes Serves 4 Ingredients For the Pancakes: 50g plain white flour 50g gram flour, sifted 15g poppy seeds 300ml pint soya milk pinch of salt 1 tsp sunflower oil 150ml natural soya yoghurt

Method To make the pancakes blend the flours, poppy seeds, soya milk and salt in a blender or food processor. Leave to stand for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, make the filling by mixing the bananas, lemon juice, apricots and almonds together.

For the Filling: 2 ripe bananas, chopped juice of 1 lemon 50g ready-to-eat dried apricots, chopped 50g toasted almonds, chopped 1 tsp groundnut oil

Heat a little oil in a non–stick pancake pan. Use a 50ml/2oz ladle to measure the batter for each pancake. Pour the batter for one pancake into the pan, swirling it around to cover the base evenly. Cook until set and golden brown underneath, then flip the pancake over and cook the other side.

To Decorate: 1 tsp poppy seeds (optional) thin slivers of lemon zest

Make 8 pancakes and layer to keep warm. Fill each pancake with a couple of spoonfuls of the filling and fold into quarters.

As well as traditional tweed, Burberry incorporated Arts and Craftsinspired woven florals with a country feel into the collection, which, along with the addition of bow belts around the models’ waists and velvet detailing, put a feminine spin on what is generally considered to be very much a masculine trend. And it is the now iconic illustrated owl emblem (along with other woodland creatures including foxes, dogs and sparrows) that featured on jumpers and t-shirts on the Burberry runway that have spawned a thousand high street lookalikes in their wake. While a cute owl jumper is a wise way to invest in the look, other elements of the Country Heritage trend are everywhere on the high street, too. Quirky tweed hats with feathers can be worn with a tweed or waxed coat or jacket, chunky knits can be teamed with tweed skirts and trousers, and 60sstyle tweed pointed flats are a subtle way to incorporate the trend into your everyday wardrobe. The beauty of this trend is that whether you wear just one item or fully embrace the look, including some element of Country Heritage in an outfit will give you an instant new season wardrobe update.

NW3 by Hob bs. Oak mid i skirt, £119 .

The Country Heritage look is one of the biggest trends out there. Tweed, feathers, furs, flat caps, equestrian-style boots and waxed quilted jackets, once the preserve of the countryside and the hunting, shooting and fishing brigade, suddenly seem like the chicest option even for urbanites not planning on going anywhere near a field.

breeze on your bike! The longstanding Great Notts Bike Ride, which is now in its 32nd year, will form the finale of the Cycle Live weekend on Sunday 23 June. Why not take part... This year’s ride, which promises to be bigger and better than ever, will feature three distances: 100 miles; 50 miles; and a 25 mile route, all of which will weave their way through sleepy Sunday villages and striking Nottinghamshire countryside. Chris Simon, who organises the ride commented: “Each ride has a capacity limit and entries have been coming in thick and fast, so if you’re planning to take part, I would encourage you to get signed up now to avoid disappointment and to take advantage of our early bird entry offer”. Chris added: “With the cold snap really setting in this week, exercising outdoors isn’t very practical at the moment, but if you’ve made a resolution to be more active in 2013, what better way to keep that promise than to look ahead to the warmer weather and give yourself a goal to aim for”. The Nottingham City Ride will move from Sunday to Saturday (22 June) next year, allowing organisers to add in a longer distance route to make it more appealing as a family day out. The ride will include two predominantly off-road routes of either 6 or 12 miles, starting and finishing at the Victoria Embankment with a feed station en route to give participants a similar experience to those taking part in the Great Notts Bike Ride. For those that don’t want to ride, the Cycle Live event village will offer a whole host of family fun across the entire weekend, including live music and stalls, so there will be something for everyone. The Nottingham Grand Prix will make a return on the Friday evening (21 June), incorporating high octane professional circuit racing, a corporate relay race and children’s racing, all of which will be free to watch. Participants are encouraged to raise sponsorship money for the official event charities, with every penny raised donated in equal share to Cerebral Palsy Sport, CLIC Sargent and Nottinghamshire Scouts. breezegardening Growing your own can be extremely satisfying and it’s also good for our health!... Potatoes: Begin ‘chitting’ potatoes now - this makes for nice healthy sprouts to get them off to a good start for early planting. Chitting just means we encourage the seed potatoes to sprout before planting. The seed potato has a more rounded, blunt end that has a number of 'eyes'. You can get these from garden centres. Stand the tubers with the blunt end uppermost in trays or even old egg boxes, with plenty of natural light (our shelter will be ideal). The potatoes will be ready for planting out when the shoots are 1.5-2.5 cm long. Chitted potatoes can be planted when the soil has started to warm up around mid-March onwards. Here’s how: dig a trench about 7.5-13cm deep, (varies with the variety of potato). Put on a sprinkling of fertiliser to the trench before planting. Plant early potatoes (the type you will be chitting in January) about 30cm apart with 40-50cm between the rows. Cover lightly with soil. When shoots appear, earth up each plant by covering it with a ridge of soil so that the shoots are just buried. Keep doing this regularly as shoots grow so each plant will have a small mound around it about 15cm high. We’ll come back to harvesting when we are ready. Chillies: You can germinate (start the seeds going) these indoors if you wish, then use your outdoor shelter. Simply plant your chilli pepper seeds straight into some normal multi purpose compost, ideally mixed with some vermiculite. Remember that different varieties take different times to germinate. If you are growing ‘habanero peppers’ for example you can expect them to take up to three or four weeks to germinate, where as annum varieties such as ‘cayenne’ will sprout much more quickly. Aim to space them about 5cms apart then lightly cover the seeds with about 0.5cm of compost and spray the tray lightly with water. The main requirement the seeds have at this beginning stage are warm moist soil. The optimum temperature for germination varies from species to species but is roughly in the region of 70 degrees f. Try and keep the temperature of the seeds constant by using a heated propagator or old electric blanket under your seed trays - these costs pence to run. The time taken for germination varies greatly between varieties. You can then plant them out in your little old lean-to (if you have some heat of course at this time of year) and let them grow. As they get bigger just repot in a slightly bigger pot for each plant. Be careful not to overwater them. As the days get longer you should start to see chillies appear, by which time we will be on our way to spring! Go on - give it a go!

breezegardening (continued...)

Wind exposure Wind places a damaging stress on plants. If you look for nearby high ground, trees, hedges, fences or buildings, these are highly significant in helping plant growth if utilised as part of your planting scheme come the early spring. Exposed areas or in ‘wind tunnels’ between houses or hills are the most likely to benefit from introducing some sort of shelter. Slow down rather than block wind using fence panels which are alternated (leaving small gaps), by not using a solid fence which causes turbulence and is far more prone to being blown down. You may find it surprising but growing conditions are improved on both sides of a shelter for up to thirty times the height of the fence or hedge. Closer proximity to it yields the most benefit of course. Depending on the direction of the shelter you may have to watch for shade - so make sure you plant only the types that can grow in less than full sunlight if this is the case. Of course, it may be that the shelter faces South so no problems there, just a nice toasty place for your plants to thrive! Avoid corridors between buildings as the air flow not only dries and cools plants but the flow in such places is turbulent with gusts that are especially damaging. Gusts stresses plants and reduces planting options. Containers are especially vulnerable to drying and wind damage, especially if positioned in exposed areas. Frost pockets Our old friend Jack Frost can wreak havoc with plants well into early spring so a garden in a frost pocket is at significant risk of late and early frosts. Avoid early flowering plants in these areas. Cold air can collect behind barriers which sit at the bottom of a slope such as a fences or hedge. Creating a gap in the barrier can give the air a pathway to drain away which helps alleviate a frost pocket - a simple solution. Happy winter gardening - enjoy!

Making the most of your garden It’s also a good time to take stock of your garden as we see all too clearly where the wind and other weather aspects generally come from within the local sites and areas we use to grow plants in throughout the year. Take a look just beyond its borders: are there any buildings or trees sheltering it? Does it lie where it is exposed to wind? Can cold air low from higher ground or even nearby trees into your garden and can it escape? or is likely to collect in cold pool of air? Are there any buildings, trees, hedges or walls which have sheltered warm spots or are there any exposed windy corners and corridors? See what potential there is for siting new hedges, shrubs and trellis to create sheltered areas. Soil Drainage We have covered soil types in a previous issue and we will return to them again but in general poor drainage can be due to being near ditches, brooks or ponds, with water levels that come close to the surface. If this is something that is all year round then bog and water gardens are likely to be highly successful rather than fighting it with futile attempts to drain away more water than is possible. Summer time usually brings dryer conditions but an area can remain wet for the larger part of spring, autumn and winter. Such gardens are very difficult to manage with only a limited range of plants able to grow in them. Raised beds are often the most practical solution in many cases as they offer a greater degree of control being above the water level. New build house gardens might have severe waterlogging problems even though not in low-lying areas due to the pressures placed on them during construction from heavy machinery etc.. Drainage may be more likely to succeed in these cases (it is not uncommon to have a boggy lawn area in these instances). In all cases it is wise to take stock before the planting season.

Owners of dogs and cats often overlook the signs of dental disease. Smelly breath for example indicates that there are problems with your pets’ teeth. George, the head vet at Churchcroft Vets, comments: “Pet owners are slowly becoming more aware of the importance of healthy teeth and gums which are vital for a comfortable mouth. Ongoing care is mostly about brushing the teeth and we have more and more owners who are able to manage this. However, just as with people, nothing will help a mouth with infection and tartar until the teeth are professionally cleaned”. To help all dog and cat carers get their pets’ mouths perfect, Churchcroft are offering a whopping discount of 40% off all dentistry in February. Hurry though; this is your last month to be able to get this amazing discount. If you’re not sure about whether your pet needs any dental work, give Churchcroft a ring on 0115 922 4855 to arrange your FREE dental check up. The vets, George and Jon, will give your pet’s mouth a thorough check, see if there are any problems and advise on any treatment needed. Eighteen cadets from 1360 (Stapleford & Sandiacre) Squadron Air Cadets have just been through a training night on how to handle the No. 8 Rifle safely. This is a small calibre rifle which provides an introduction to shooting. They were taught various safety drills and how they should go about handling the weapon when ready to shoot. Each cadet then went waited nervously as they were called up to take their Weapons Handling Test. The test consisted of answering four questions then a practical test on how well they could handle the weapon. If the cadet got through the test with no safety failures they successfully passed the test. All eighteen cadets including the squadrons NCO’s passed the test and are now safe to fire the No. 8 Rifle at a range. Cadet Alex Habgood said “I found the training fairly easy and interesting as I had never handled the No. 8 Rifle Before so it was all new to me. Although I passed my test I found it was tricky but challenging which made me want to pass it even more. I am now happy that I can confidently shoot the Rifle and can’t wait to get on the range. “ Are you up for fun, adventure, incredible experiences and making new friends? breeze community Communities were brought together for holocaust memorial day... A romany gypsy teenager who writes his own poetry helped Broxtowe Borough Council mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2013 with a reading of his powerful poem, which tells the story of his great grandmother Rose’s experience in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Danniel was invited to deliver his first public reading of his poem ‘Gypsy Snow’ at a short ceremony to mark the 13th annual Holocaust Memorial Day event, which took place in the Walled Garden at Bramcote Hills Park. Danniel joined Broxtowe Youth Mayor Adam Stockwell, Deputy Youth Mayor Leigh Alder and Igor Chernyavsky, the grandson of a Jewish Holocaust survivor, in delivering readings to reflect the theme of this year’s event, ‘Communities Together: Building a Bridge’. The Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic, said: “We are delighted that Danniel, Adam, Leigh and Igor will help us to mark Holocaust Memorial Day to remember the millions of victims of the Holocaust and subsequent atrocities around the world.” Holocaust Memorial Day is a nationwide event held each year to remember those affected by the crimes against humanity committed during the Holocaust and in subsequent atrocities throughout the world. During the Holocaust, it is thought that at least 200,000 Romany Gypsies were murdered and they were probably the second largest category of victims after the Jews. The poem Gypsy Snow was created especially for the event by Danniel to share the experiences of his great grandmother, also a Romany Gypsy, who survived the Holocaust as a teenager despite many of her relatives being murdered during the atrocities. Although Danniel never met his great grandmother, her story has been passed down through her grandchildren to spread the word about the Holocaust and to ensure it can never happen again. Danniel will follow up his appearance at the event by recording a DVD of his Holocaust poems at the memorial in Auschwitz-Birkenau, which will be available for free to all schools and libraries to spread the word about the atrocities.
