Riverside Drama Company invite you to join the night shift at Kale Moor Grocery Distribution Depot in Tim Firth’s hilarious play ‘The End Of The Food Chain’. If you thought working the night shift a tedious chore, think again! Amongst the pallets and cartons, clip-boards and overalls the “animal shift” is transformed by tournaments of ‘smartie and flan based tiddlywinks’, energetic games of ‘sprout tag’ as well as nail-biting rounds of ‘frozen fish sword fighting’. The all-male team use food-sports, juvenile humour and sarcasm to help keep fatigue and boredom at bay to get them through the night shift. However, when a new colleague- a female - is introduced to the mix, the team fear that their right to habitual high-jinx may be seriously under threat. From the writer of Calendar Girls and Neville’s Island, 'The End of the Food Chain' is a wildly funny and well-observed play which will have a humorous appeal for all. Riverside are set to put on yet another spectacular performance, this time under the skilful direction of Lizzie Norris. Performances are at the Duchess Theatre in Long Eaton from Thursday 20th to Saturday 22nd March, curtain up at 7.30pm. The Duchess Theatre offers excellent viewing comfort with 180 tiered seating, ample parking and refreshments. Riverside Drama Company are an amateur group with a reputation for high quality productions. They most recently brought Shakespeare to the Duchess Theatre in Long Eaton in an incredible production of Twelfth Night. As part of the RSC’s Open Stages National Showcase in 2012, they earned a standing ovation at the Swan Theatre, Stratford for an excellent performance of “The Pocket Dream”. The group rehearse every Thursday night at Bramcote Church of England Primary School (7.30pm) and new members are always made welcome. Tickets for The End Of The Food Chain are priced at £7 full and £6 concessions and are available via the website www.riversidedrama.com, from the Chatsworth Centre coffee mornings on Saturdays (10am-noon), or by calling 0115 875 6041

TAKE CARE BEFORE YOU SAY: “I WILL” Do you know that getting married normally revokes a Will? Those two tiny life-changing words - “I will” – may decide who gets what when you die. Now the last thing on your mind when planning a wedding is drawing up a Will. It’s morbid and unromantic. Particularly with all those other decisions about what to wear, who gets an invite, where to go on honeymoon. Not to mention the “Abba or Birdie Song” dilemma! English law assumes you’ll want to favour your new spouse over any blood relatives or people named in a Will. Since 1837 “Marriage Revokes Wills” resulting in an intestacy so your assets will pass to your new spouse or civil partner, with a little for the close blood relatives of the wellheeled. Step-children, lovers, friends, charities, distant cousins – all these get nothing. That can be OK, but definitely not for those with children from a previous relationship. But will they realise your big day operates to disinherit them? Asking your little girl to be your bridesmaid is a bit cheeky if her ability to inherit gets chopped at the same time. Does this mean you have to sign your new Wills straight after the ceremony? You won’t want your lawyer in the photos - it’s supposed to be a happy occasion. Wills “in contemplation of marriage” Fortunately it’s not every Will that gets revoked. English law allows you to make a Will “in contemplation of marriage” before the wedding day. With the correct wording, such a Will can survive the ceremony – good news for children or grandchildren from earlier relationships who might otherwise lose out. There’s more to it than that, so make sure you get proper legal advice a few weeks before the wedding to ensure the rules are followed and that your wishes rule OK. There’s enough to do on honeymoon without worrying about that plane trip home. For more information or advice on writing a Will contact Jayne Smith at Rothera Dowson solicitors on 0800 158 5316. Helen’s Sewing Services is a friendly local business, based in Beeston, specialising in alterations to bridesmaid dresses, prom dresses and occasion wear, general clothing repairs and custom soft furnishings. breezebook review Welcome to our regular Book Review. This month Eat yourself Young!

From Elizabeth Peyton-Jones, food and health expert and author of Eat Yourself Young 2014 is going to be the year that people start to change their relationship with food and focus on what they are eating and the effect it is having on their health, says Elizabeth PeytonJones, food and health expert and author of Eat Yourself Young. Reading labels, buying and cooking fresh food instead of ready-meals, taking control of our eating habits and educating ourselves about good food will be more important to most of us than trying the latest fad diets. Here Elizabeth explains further about the concept of “we are what we eat” and how understanding a few simple principles can change our bodies and lives for the better. 1. Know what you are putting into your body: 2014 is about making sense of confusing information regarding diet, food and labels. It’s about learning to create dishes that are less complicated, addictive, fatty and compulsive. It’s about finding an everyday diet that you can follow for most of the time without getting into a binge/deprivation cycle. 2. Indulging is ok: There is going to be more interest in finding a general healthy eating plan that doesn’t make you feel as if you are going back to ground zero whenever you break it, or that you’re a loser who will never be able to manage your weight or health properly. The new eating regime is about finding principles to follow for life, and building in indulgences that won’t ever send you off on a guilt trip. 3. Prevention is better than cure: This year is also about bringing health awareness to the table, taking control of our health and wellbeing and relying less on doctors, hospitals and medication. Instead of treating the symptoms we will be trying to avoid getting ill in the first place with a balanced and nutrient-rich diet. 4. Good health is for everyone: Consumers are starting to realise that the tools to good health and optimum weight are in your kitchen and on your plate. It is your choice – good health is not for a select few. Make good food a gift you give yourself every day because you want power, concentration, good self-esteem and a passion for life rather than exhaustion, illness, lack of focus and depression. 5. We are what we eat: This year, we start to understand that the food we eat has profound consequences on our bodies (physical), attitudes (mental), and impacts on both our short and long term

breezemagazine 20

health. For example: if you have a headache, maybe your liver is congested and needs a light detox, or maybe you are dehydrated. Stomach pains normally occur because of a low grade inflammation or intolerance. Try and find the source and change your eating and drinking to help sort it out. 6. Ditch the sugar: We will start to cut down on sugar as we begin fully to understand its detrimental effect on our health and weight. Not all sweet was created equal: sugar is complicated and made more so by scientists who have created synthesised sweet yet low calorie tastes, thus fooling us into believing there is no detrimental impact to the body… We’ll all be learning how wrong that viewpoint it! 7. Spice it up: Herbs and spices make a comeback having been downgraded over the years to a garnish or flavouring. Yet for thousands of years before they were used medicinally. As we come to understand the benefits of ginger, cinnamon, fennel, turmeric, basil, mint and parsley, we can learn to use the kitchen as a pharmacy to good health and a healthy weight. 8. Doesn’t have to cost the earth: Anything you make yourself from scratch is going to cost less than readymade food. So you will notice the difference in your pocket as well as your physique. Eat Yourself Young (Quadrille, £12.99) has been updated and reprinted and is available from good bookshops or online from www.epjhealth.com.

breeze what’s on

Melbourne Operatic Society will be presenting Gilbert and Sullivan’s delightful operetta ‘Lolanthe’ at the Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton. From Wednesday 12th march to Saturday 15th March at 7.30pm. This will be the third production the Society has staged at this lovely theatre. Why not join them...

Tickets are £11 or £10 for concession and FREE for accompanied children 16 years and under. Tickets can be purchased through the website at www.melbourneoperaticsociety.com or by downloading a booking form or by contacting the Box Office on 01332-875350 or Society members. Tickets are also available at the Chatsworth Centre, Long Eaton “Saturday Coffee Mornings”. “Iolanthe”, or “The Peer and the Peri”, opened at the Savoy Theatre on November 25, 1882 and ran for nearly 400 performances. Both Gilbert and Sullivan were at the height of their creative powers in 1882, and many people feel that Iolanthe, their seventh work together, is the most perfect of their many collaborations. Gilbert had taken pot shots at the aristocracy before, but in this “fairy opera,” the House of Lords is lampooned as a bastion of ineffectiveness and privilege. Both author and composer managed to covey the criticism among such lively and affable absurdities that it is all received as good fun.

Strephon, an Arcadian shepherd, wants to marry Phyllis, a Ward of Chancery. Phyllis does not know that Strephon is half fairy (his upper half —though his legs are mortal!) and when she sees Strephon kissing a seemingly young woman, she assumes the worst. But her “rival” turns out to be none other than Strephon’s own mother, Iolanthe, a fairy — fairies never grow old! But Phyllis’ guardian, the Lord Chancellor, and nearly all the peers in the House of Lords are sighing after her. Soon the peers and the fairies are virtually at war. However, all is happily sorted out in true Gilbertian fashion.

get your skates on !

With the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics fast approaching, why not get on your skates and experience Nottingham on ice?

Nottingham has a long tradition of ice skating stretching back many years. Here is a Nottingham skating fact file which is bound to get you in the skating mood. Nottingham’s Torvill and Dean The county’s biggest skating accolade was achieved thirty years ago this year when Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean became world famous at the Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics. The pair was announced as gold medal winners for their perfect performance of the Bolero. They were the highest scoring figure skaters of all time by receiving 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge! Their triumphs have inspired a whole new generation of youngsters into taking up ice sports. To mark the anniversary of their celebrated victory, in February the ice legends will return to Sarajevo and perform their Bolero routine in the same stadium. After announcing in 2013 that the pair will hang up their skates and say goodbye to their ITV show, Dancing on Ice, they will skate for one last time on the Dancing on Ice UK Tour. They will glide into Nottingham on 8 – 10 April 2014 and will be joined by a host of skaters from the show. Nottingham’s Sport Stars The Great Britain Short Track Speed Skating team are based in Nottingham and are some of Britain’s brightest medal hopes for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. They have left their training base and began their journey to Russia. Among the squad is the British number one Short Track Speed Skater, Elise Christie, the former world record holding men’s relay team featuring two-time Olympian Jon Eley, World Cup medallists Paul Stanley and Richard Shoebridge, and Nottingham born European gold medallist, Jack Whelbourne. The city’s Hockey team, Nottingham Panthers, also train at the National Ice Centre and use the venue for their home games. They are the oldest ice hockey team in the country! England Netball are encouraging women aged 16+ to make ‘Back to Netball’ their resolution for 2014. Could you be one of the ones joining in?... Back to Netball sessions are running nationwide and are ideal for ladies who have not taken to the court for a few years, or since school, or anywhere in between. Running across England since 2010, nearly 40,000 women have taken part in sessions and realised the benefits of getting involved in this fabulous sport. Kaylea McQuade, Nottingham Netball Development Community Coach said: “Back to Netball provides a gentle re-introduction to the sport for ladies of all ages and abilities. Sessions are coach-led and cover the basics from chest passes to shooting.” “Whether it is about rediscovering sporting abilities you forgot you had, losing a few pounds or making new friends, these sessions have something for everyone. With sessions in Nottingham giggles are guaranteed!” Kaylea added: “Re-introducing the sport to ladies who perhaps haven’t played since school is very rewarding. Many have forgotten how much they loved playing, but I am happy to remind them! It’s great for getting fit, having fun and making friends. Perfect for helping to hit numerous resolutions this January.” Claire Collin from Nottingham started playing netball through her local Back to Netball session last January. She said I probably last picked up a netball when I was 14yrs old. I’ve always wanted to get back into netball but worried if I was good enough. When a colleague mentioned ‘Back to Netball’ at work, I was keen to find out more! 18yrs after I last picked up a netball I went along to the first session, slightly nervous about my fitness level and not wanting to be split up from my friend!! Straight away I was put at ease, the group was made up of a real mixed ability and friendly chatty people! The coach was great, easing us back into the game emphasising on the fun but allowing my competitive streak to come out!! ‘Back to Netball’ gave me something to look forward to each week to get me through the weekly grind of work! I’ve made new friends through the session and got back together with some from the school netball team! Best of all is I’ve been able to introduce my 8 year old daughter to the game and comes along to watch me train. At weekends we find a local court and practise netball skills together!! Thanks for getting me ‘back to netball’ I love it!

breezegardening It is at last time to begin growing again as the winter starts to wane. Let us take a look at what we can do in the garden... We have covered the subject of growing your own potatos before so why not start some yourself? Children can get involved and this can be rewarding in showing them where those tasty baked potatos come from! Start off with seed potatos (these can be bought from a garden centre or seed supplier). Choose ‘earlies’ which are suitable for planting now. Then place them in old egg boxes or seed boxes with the end with most of the eyes on it (the ‘rose’ end) face up. You leave them like this in a cool but light place such as an unheated room or a porch area but out of direct sunlight if possible. Leave them until small purplish coloured shoots appear of about one inch long. Using either a compost filled bag or your garden soil (you can buy potato sacks which open at the bottom if you prefer) plant the sprouted (this is referred to as chitted) potatos as follows; • Potato bag planting: fill about one third with multipurpose compost then plant two of your seeded potatos, sprouts facing

breezemagazine 34

upwards, on top and cover with more multipurpose compost to about two thirds full. Then you can add two more seed potatos here and cover up to the top with your compost. Water in and give them a potato feed every other week. Maintain watering to keep the compost moist. You should locate the growing bag in a bright and frost free position. You should have potatos ready to harvest in about ten weeks. You can check in the soil to see how big they are and leave a little longer (around a week or so) if they look too small. • Soil planting: choose a full sun position and ensure the drainage is adequate. Slightly acid soil is preferable but if it isn’t then just add some sulphur to the top of the potato ridge after you have planted (this can be obtained from your garden centre). Dig a four inch deep trench and place your seed potatos in with the sprouts facing upwards. Cover with soil and build up a slight ridge above the trench. You can add some potato fertiliser to the top of the trench to aid growth if you wish. Ideally you

should have dug your soil over back in November or December and added compost then - always something to learn for next year! Planting time is around the end of February and harvesting is about ten weeks after you have planted. Remember: if you plant potatoes in soil it is important not to plant in the same place each year due to pests in the soil - so move your planting area (called rotating the crop) each year, returning to the original only every fourth or fifth year with the potato crop. Container grown potatoes don’t have this issue. Continued...

breezegardening Quick and easy coldframe Soon it will be time for trying out your starter bedding plants ready for spring and to grow some food crops even - all with the help of a coldframe. We have covered this subject before and looked at construction using wood. However, if you are not feeling up to building anything then a quick, effective and instant cold frame can be had. Simply buy a large and deep clear plastic storage box with a lid. Turn it upside down and leave the lid on the floor as you remove the box, there you have an effective coldframe! Before you laugh just think - this will give both light and insulation to small plants and it does work. You could always try this and then build a better one for next season if you don’t have time right now. You can of course also buy a ready made one if you choose to. We shall be looking at planting bedding plants in forthcoming issues but now is the time to arrange for a shelter to grow seedlings in for early spring. Plant a container grown fruit tree We covered tree planting in our October issue last year and this may be a good time to look at planting out a container grown tree as it will not be so susceptible to frost. To get your tree started in a container then, half fill a large tub with your soil-based potting compost and place the tree on top. Fill the tub in with more soil to the base of the tree and water well. Feed regularly to keep it growing throughout the early spring, summer and beyond. You can try a variety of tree types including fig which can eventually deliver the fresh figs that are a real treat over the dried variety. Your tree can be purchased in either a container or as bare-rooted plants and you should look for well-developed fibrous roots. So, even though we still have some more cold weather to come, don’t think that we can’t start the growing process once again for the year ahead. Get your fingers in the compost and enjoy!

When asked what she wanted for her Birthday local girl, Jessica from Toton wanted to hold her 11th Birthday Party in aid of Water Aid... This refreshing story shows that youngsters of today aren't all 'takers' but some prefer to give generously. Jessica had told her parents she had everything she really wanted and therefore didn't want Birthday gifts but instead wanted to do something for her nominated charity Water Aid. So Jessica with the help of her mum Claire and dad Barry organised her Charity Birthday Party. Water Aid volunteer of 25 years Jackie Willems was booked. Raddison Blu Hotel East Midlands Airport kindly donated the use of one of their functions rooms, local Magician Duncan William reduced his fee and was booked, donations for raffle prizes came from Nestle, McDonalds, The Village Hotel to name but a few.

breezemagazine 38

Jessica invited her many friends from year 6 at Bispham Drive Junior School Toton. She provided them with a water bottle each, inviting them once they'd drank the water, to fill the bottle with loose change and bring it along to her party. At the party the children were given a talk about Water Aid's valuable work and were shown a film about how donations help people around the world gain access to safe drinking water and healthy sanitation. Interactive games were played with the children having to carry full buckets of water around the room to emulate what children of their age in Africa have to do when bringing water back to their village. This can sometimes take up to 5 hours a day! This was a fantastic idea from Jessica, highlighting the plight of people in poorer countries than ours. At the same time providing an educational and wonderfully enjoyable party for her friends who all agreed Jessica was the heroine of the day and her friends have raised lots of money for Water Aid. A total of £508.79 was raised - well done Jessica and her friends! www.wateraid.org/uk

ABOUT WATER AID WaterAid's history stretches back to 1981, when on 21 July they were officially established as a charitable trust. In the last thirty years, they have gone from strength to strength to become one of the most respected organisations dealing solely with water, sanitation and hygiene issues. Your money and support has also helped them to influence policy and practice to ensure that the vital role of water, hygiene and sanitation in reducing poverty is recognised globally. The Eastwood Funeral Partnership is an Independent Family business which can trace its origins back to 1867. Over the years the business has changed and grown, and now comprises four funeral homes serving a wide area from premises in Eastwood, Kimberley, Stapleford and Heanor. Each funeral home is distinctive, and the funeral directors who work at them have between them almost 100 years of experience of serving their local communities. The business has retained its family roots –Barry and Elaine Hutsby and their daughters Joanne and Alison work together in the business, alongside Anthony Topley, who began his career in the funeral profession working with his father-in-law Jack Gillott at Gillotts Funeral Service in Heanor. When Jack retired the two businesses merged, and the Gillotts name has since been extended to the partnership’s Stapleford funeral home. The partners believe passionately in providing the best for the families they serve - probably best represented by their funeral vehicles - a fleet of gleaming black Jaguars purchased in 2013 which represent an investment of over £350,000. “ It doesn’t matter who you are” explains Anthony Topley “when you’re planning the funeral of someone you love, you want the best for them. ARCADE PLAYERS OFFER A RAY OF WINTER SUNSHINE Following their completely sold out production of “Volunteers” in November, the well known drama group Arcade Players are busy rehearsing their next hilarious production. “Caught in the net” is a farce by Ray Cooney, and the sequel to “Run for your Wife.” For the taxi driving bigamist John, time has moved on, and now has a teenage boy by one wife and girl by the other. The kids having met on the internet are so surprised just how much they have in common, that they decide to meet in person. When it dawns on John what is about to happen, he creates havoc trying to keep them apart. Stanley, his friend and lodger, might just help, but he has problems of his own when his rather decrepit and bemused father turns up at the house, convinced he has just arrived at his seaside holiday hotel. The situation gets even more out of hand as John tries to juggle the truth, and it’s only the twist at the end that brings some sort of sanity to this convoluted story. A classic farce written by the master of comedy, combined with the skills of the Arcade Players, will leave you out of breath, aching with laughing, and wanting more. Most definitely not to be missed ! “Caught in the Net” will be performed at the Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton on February 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th at 7.30pm nightly. helping hands Most of us want to live independently in our own homes for as long as possible, but as we get older we may need some support and assistance. 80% of older people say a helping hand at home improves their quality of life.

A recent survey by Age UK Notts shows that people who have help at home with everyday tasks such as cleaning, shopping and laundry feel their quality of life has been improved. The charity found that by offering a helping hand they enabled people to spend more time with their loved ones and doing things that enjoy. Equally many older people find they are no longer able to complete these tasks to the best of their ability. With this in mind, the charity has launched a Home Help service to offer relief to older people who need a little help around the house. For an hourly charge a Home Help can assist with everyday tasks including cleaning, shopping, laundry, ironing, light meal preparation and carers’ sitting. Just like thousands of people throughout the country, Robert is the sole carer for his spouse. He and his wife, Mary, have been married for over seventy years, thirty years of which Robert has been caring for her full time. Robert’s caring responsibilities mean that he doesn’t have the capacity to do everyday jobs such as cleaning and shopping. His limited time to complete routine tasks started to have a negative impact on their quality of life. Following a recommendation from a friend, Robert decided to get in touch with the cleaning and shopping services of Age UK Notts. Robert and Mary are now visited a couple of times a week by a Home Help who assists them to clean their house and do their shopping. Robert is now able to spend more time caring for and being with Mary and less time worrying about everyday tasks. Robert and Mary not only personally benefited but their custom has also had a wider positive impact as any surplus from the Home Help service go towards helping vulnerable older people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. For more information, please call our Home Support team on 0115 952 5331 or 01623 488 218.
