Where as the lighter, individually blended creation conjured up especially for the curry novices out there is full of flavour but not intimidating. Both dishes were complimented by a delightfully tasty Peshwari Naan drizzled with honey. The traditional flat bread was the perfect accompaniment to soak up all the gorgeous sauce. Numerous deserts are available to round off your meal from the classic Ice Cream Sundae to the more traditional Gulab Jamun of succulent soft spongy balls flavoured delicately with aromatic cardamoms and pistachios and covered with a sweet syrup. A facinating entertainment is watching your meals being prepared in their light, spotless open kitchen by their team of highly experienced chiefs from superior quality fresh and seasonal ingredients. In all the food is faithful to it’s origins but presented in a more contemporary fashion, adding a surprising but pleasing change to the traditional curry house style. NEW YEAR TASTE APPLE AND FENNEL SLAW (Serves 12-14) 1 head green cabbage Ice water as needed 1 lemon, halved 4 fennel bulbs 4 Granny Smith apples 250ml (8floz) mayonnaise 60g (2oz) sugar 60ml (2floz) fresh lemon juice 60ml (2floz) sherry vinegar 2tbsps whole milk 1tsp salt 185g (6oz) sultanas 4 spring onions thinly sliced 20g (3/4oz) finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
BOURBON GLAZED HAM (Serves 12-14) 10kg (20lb) bone-in whole ham 545g (17 1/2oz) firmly-packed dark brown sugar 80ml (3floz) bourbon 15-20 whole cloves Preheat the oven to 165C/Gas mark 3. Line a shallow roasting pan with aluminium foil and set a roasting rack in the pan. Cut away any skin from the ham and trim the fat to 12mm thick. Place the ham, fat side up, on the rack in the roasting pan. Roast until the ham is fully warmed through and a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the ham (but not touching the bone) registers 60C - approx three to three-and-a-half hours. Remove the ham from the oven. Raise the oven temperature to 220C/Gas mark 8. In a bowl mix the brown sugar and bourbon to make a paste. Score the fat on the upper half of the ham in a diamond pattern, cutting about 6mm deep. Rub the paste over the surface, and then place the cloves at random intersections of the diamonds. Return the ham to the oven and bake, basting several times with the pan juices, until the surface is shiny and beginning to glaze, about 15-20 minutes. Transfer the ham to a cutting board and cover loosely with aluminium foil. Leave to stand for 20-30 minutes. Remove the cloves. Carve half of the ham and arrange on a warmed platter. Carve the remaining ham as required.
Cut the cabbage in half through the stem end. Slice the cut face of each half into paper-thin slices. Place in a large bowl and add ice water to cover. Set aside. Fill another large bowl with ice water and squeeze the juice of half a lemon into it. Bring a large pan three quarters full of water to the boil and add the juice of the remaining lemon half. Cut off the stems and feathery fronds of the fennel bulbs and remove any bruised or discoloured outer leaves. Cut each bulb in half lengthways and cut out any tough core parts. Using the small julienne blade of a mandoline, slice each half into matchsticks and place immediately into the bowl of cold lemon water. When all the fennel is cut, transfer it with a slotted spoon to the boiling water and blanch for 30 seconds. (Reserve the cold lemon water for the apples). Drain the blanched fennel and rinse well under cold water, then set aside in a fresh bowl of ice water. Quarter the apples and cut away the cores. Slice each quarter into matchsticks, starting with the rounded side, and place immediately into the reserved bowl of lemon water. In another bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sugar, lemon juice, vinegar, milk and salt and mix together. Taste - the dressing should be both sweet and tangy, and the consistency should be pourable but not thick. Add a little more milk if the dressing is too thick. Taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary. Drain the cabbage, pat dry and place in a large bowl. Drain the fennel, squeeze gently to remove excess water, pat dry and add to the cabbage. Drain the apples, pat dry and add to the bowl. Add the spring onions and parsley. Pour the dressing over and mix well. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
GOAT'S CHEESE AND SHALLOT TOASTS (Serves 12-14) 1 baguette 155g (5oz) soft goat's cheese, at room temperature 4-6tbsps double cream 1/2 tsp salt | 2 or 3 small shallots, finely chopped 3tbsps pink peppercorns, crushed Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas mark 4. Have ready two ungreased baking sheets. Cut the baguette on the diagonal into slices 6mm breezemagazine 8
thick. Arrange the slices in a single layer on the baking sheets. Bake until lightly golden, about 15 minutes. Turn the slices and bake until the second side is lightly golden as well, about 10 minutes longer. Set aside. Put the goat's cheese in a bowl and mash it with a fork. Add one tablespoon of the cream and mash it in. Continue to add the cream, one tablespoon at a time, until you have a soft, mild spread. Mix in the salt and the shallots to taste. When ready to serve, spread each baguette toast with the cheese and shallot spread and top with the crushed peppercorns.

AN AERIAL VIEW With a regular profile within Breeze, Stewart Cliff is used to having his face known around the area. We take a look at the man behind the ladder...
W
hen people first meet Stewart Cliff, the man behind Notts & Derby TV Aerials they may feel they already know him from somewhere. That may well be because Stewart is keen to promote his local company by featuring in his own promotional literature. “I find that as it’s me who is going to speak to and deal with the customer it is helpful that they already know who is going to turn up at their house beforehand so there is a serious point to this.” explains Stewart.
breezemagazine 14
Importantly, adds Stewart, his customers also go on to recommend him to friends and family who are equally delighted by the standard of service provided by him. As an aerial engineer Stewart carries a broad range of TV aerials, including both digital aerials and analogue aerials, to ensure they can meet your home viewing requirements. He also specialises in the installation of Satelite dishes for those wishing to try the Free HD TV and extra channels available via Freesat. All digital aerials are benchmarked and compliant to the CAI standards, and can be installed to improve the quality of reception for your home television viewing. Stewart is a qualified NVQ college assessor so he is keen to promote high standards. “My role as a college assessor is not part of my daily work, however, because I have the responsibility of judging others it certainly makes me mindful of maintaining the very highest standards when conducting an installation for one of my customers. For Stewart the customer is king every time, so for your next step to an improved picture why not give Stewart a call and meet the man behind the ladder!

HOROSCOPES THE YEAR AHEAD By ANNE HARBOUR Dip.Hyp. HPD. MNCH - Clinical Hypnotherapist HPD. Member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (MNCH) ARIES [21st March-20th April] Having faith in yourself during 2010 becomes the key to one of the most successful of years. Dealing with past emotions and putting them behind you gives you the strength to see the first part of the year go your way with the rest of the goodies following on. Recently disappointed by discovering who your real friends are and those who have cleverly used you in some way has been quite an eye opener.Dusting yourself down and by just getting on with life in general you greet new and welcoming changes into your life. Concentrating more on family and those you love brings a much richer and fulfilling life. Taking more in your own well being makes life more interesting.
CANCER [22nd June-23rd July] Any setbacks experienced lately are dealt with and you become more settled with life in general. Taking up new and exciting interests gives those you love a nudge assisting them into making new and loyal friends. Putting yourself first for a short time pays off with positive actions taking over and bringing new light into your life. Unresolved issues are dealt with mid month making an awkward day turn into a fabulous night. Sensitive and caring you hide your emotions when seeking solace. With your strong personality you win over those who had doubts about you and by proving them wrong becomes the best thing ever. You relax more end of the month.
TAURUS [21ST April-20th May] With unexpected changes having taken place, some you like and some you don’t you adjust accordingly. No longer taking what others throw at you, you stand up for yourself and take no nonsense from anyone. Emerging much stronger than ever before you plan 2010 sooner rather than later. Any delays regarding unfinished business within the home become frustrating, but you soon sort matters out and to your advantage. Careful not to hurt family or friends you handle one situation brilliantly which takes on immediate and positive effect. Firm decisions made January keep someone on their toes. You are pleased with a welcoming outcome end of month.
LEO [24TH July-23rd August] By reflecting over the last year you take great care during 2010 not to make the same mistakes. You give up trying to understand the feelings of others when they don’t open up, but by providing them with the emotional support they need help them to understand the core of their problem. Dealing with matters outside the home put you in a good stead making one environment much better to be in. You realise that any pressure felt between the 18th and 24th of January is due to your own neglect of your own well being. Getting things under control your soon back on form sending energy to those around you. With plenty to keep you occupied a time to unwind comes in.
GEMINI [21st May-21st June] Taking a positive view on all what you would like to achieve during 2010 you put your best foot forward and start the ball rolling. Any unexpected problems in relationships are handled well. Taking time to accommodate one persons needs solves a problem of another. Younger members of the family prove they were correct in thinking the way they did regarding a matter of concern to them. With a few words from someone they respect all turns out well in the end. Receiving social invitations boosts your confidence and with a happy and exciting night out life begins to move in the direction you wanted it to. Cherished memories creep in taking over a day or so.
VIRGO [24th August-23rd Sept] 2010 becomes a promising year with lots to do during January. Hectic it may be for a while but things soon settle down with life becoming more relaxed toward the end of the month. Getting rid of the old and bringing in the new gives you satisfaction allowing you to make certain changes in the home. Feeling under obligation you volunteer your help with regrets after. Catching up with paperwork takes longer than you expected and with one document being signed on your terms and no one else s. With property in mind you assist in giving a friend some help and advice. Concern over a younger member of the family fades when a reasonable explanation is given.
23 Carrfield Ave, Long Eaton Nottingham NG10 2BW
LIBRA [24th Sept-22nd October] The New Year brings a more peaceful existence that that of the last year. January is spent sorting out any unfinished business so you can get under way and move on in life. Discovering you can achieve your ambitions alone instead of relying on others marks the beginning of a new and challenging phase, eliminating those who have dragged you down, being selfish at the same time. Family takes priority and with that in mind you cherish what you have. Making provisions for those who are dear takes time but you become satisfied you have done your best. An offer to travel more is met with some doubt but through discussions benefits are seen for the future long term. SCORPIO [23rd Oct-22nd Nov] Celebrations get under way first part of the New Year. Happy with events you make the decision to take the bull by the horns arranging another evening in the same company. Taking no for an answer you get your own way when dealing with someone who thinks you’re a pushover when it comes to business matters. Falling in love may well happen suddenly and without warning for those who are single and with miles apart manage to speed up a special chapter in their lives. Any doubts or fears vanish when wined and dined away from home. Not allowing yourself to be hurt in anyway you keep that special group of friends close to you. Loyalty pays off in abundance. SAGITTARIUS [23rd Nov-22nd Dec] At last you can concentrate on yourself rather than others. 2010 provides you with the time to put all your effort into succeeding where others have failed. Trying to help out with family requests and running your own life needs nothing short of a miracle but you do achieve your goals. Partners and loved ones give their support when one decision has to be made which helps to boost your career. Eliminating unwanted emotions gives you the freedom of choice. Being introduced to new and influential people gives you the opportunity to plan long term in a beneficial way regarding more than one area of your life. You keep a distance from anyone who has a grievance.

CAPRICORN [23rd Dec-20th Jan] This year you concentrate more on building relationships outside the home, which you and your family could well benefit from. Putting any disappointments behind you a plan of action is taken which not only puts you back on form but could well boost your finances at the same time. Doing things your way might cause disruption of some kind but your determined all will turn out well and it does. With excellent prospects for the foreseeable future you look forward to the rest of 2010 with an air of excitement, which you and other people feel you deserve. With pride you make sure the support is given to a younger member of the family who you feel is talented. AQUARIUS [21st Jan-19th Feb] At long last your beginning to see some pleasing results from all the hard work over the last months. This year you feel is your year and with it comes many nice surprises. January you seem to be on a mission making sure everything you plan is achieved by the end of the month. Your perception with experience pays off when dealing with business matters. Relationships take on a new meaning with partners becoming more involved and working together as a team. Taking a journey under duress involving family goes well with a second visit being discussed. Welcome ideas regarding the home become reality and with satisfying results makes one person very happy. PISCES [20th February-20th March] Entering the New Year your happy to take each day at a time. Doing things your way and not being rushed you perfect and complete something you began some time ago. Romance gets under way should you be single or otherwise providing you with long term commitments and an exciting future. Your wish to see a family member who lives many miles just may be granted bringing happiness all round. You help in a heated discussion by giving emotional support but make it quite clear you will not become involved. Going out the odd day or two you treat yourself to something special. Feeling more yourself you make plans for an overdue romantic evening.

SAVING ON STYLE Bagging a bargain has never been more fashionable We give a step-bystep guide to creating a great home on a shoestring budget.
A
lexandra Campbell believes people are beginning to revel in the freedom of expressing their individual style. "Not being able to furnish your home the way you want because of your budget forces you to look at things with a fresh eye. "Really, the only limit is your imagination, rather than your pocket!" Be inspired with a step-by-step guide to a style that makes being a home spendthrift look plain foolish.
CHIC COLLECTIONS Think outside of the box - they don't have to consist of valuable antiques or ornaments but can be as simple as a set of pebbles collected on holidays, which are then hand painted with an appealing design. "Think carefully about how you arrange objects. One technique is to 'crowd it up' - a well-tried antique dealer's trick to make things appear more valuable. So a collection of bottles will look better than one or two," suggests Alexandra. "Alternatively, take the 'less is more' approach and give objects space so that they look special and precious no matter what their price." TURN ON THE DETAIL The most charming homes have interesting details that catch the eye, and give visual clues about their owner's personality. "A pretty window blind, distinctive cushions on the sofa or bed, or decorative items lining a windowsill add a dash of zest to rooms."
THRIFTY TIPS: Turn old jewellery into a room accessory - hang necklaces on cupboard handles for a 'hippy chic' look. When creating mantelscapes and tablescapes, try to find a unifying theme maybe in the colour, the objects or the pattern. Look for the 'oddities' - a quirky collection of glass vases and different sized candlesticks will work well especially if you focus on one material, such as glass, wood, silver or china. Small mirrors cost little in sales. Mix vintage and chain store ones in a display to instantly enhance the light in a room. Vintage blankets or traditional plaids used as they are or lined with a pretty fabric make great throws for beds and chairs. Collect vintage photos or maps of your local area and framing them for a wall. Museum shops often have well-priced replicas of art objects or iconic designs.

e're quick to transform our fashions once temperatures plummet but our locks are often left out of the seasonal switchover. Hair can be a hidden casualty of the winter months - and often we can't see the effects until the damage is already done. Dried-out, frizzy ends or static and lifeless, limp locks are just some of the hair nightmares we face when the weather turns nippy. Not sure how to keep your hair in peak condition? We check out the best winter fixes for lacklustre tresses from Britain's best hairdressers so don't allow the winter to wreak havoc on your hair.
FRIZZ ALERT
Wet and windy weather is turning my style into a frizz-ball. "Serum is your secret weapon against frizz," advises Charles Worthington. "It calms wayward strands and helps lock in moisture by sealing the hair shaft. Smooth a serum into wet hair prior to blow-drying to achieve fantastic frizz control."

I hate these long, dark nights. How can I give my hair some easy home pampering during the winter? "Use a good deep conditioning treatment once a week to replace lost moisture," Andrew Collinge advises. "Use the intensive conditioner when you're in a hot bath or steam room as this opens the cuticle, allowing the conditioner to really sink in for best results. Or apply the treatment to towel-dried hair, then wrap your hair in a fresh towel for 10 minutes before rinsing out. This will allow the conditioner more time to penetrate the hair so you will really feel the benefits."
GOODBYE STATIC
AS TANGLED TRESSES DULL DISHWATER Once temperatures drop, my long locks start to look dry and tangled. Help! "Harsh winter winds can cause long hair to tangle and matt, leaving your hair looking dull, frizzy and in bad condition," warns Collinge. "For best results when washing, try a shampoo and conditioner especially for longer hair. They'll gently untangle all those snags and keep your hair looking smooth and shiny."
breezemagazine 20
By the time I've arrived into work from my morning commute, half my hair is flying around my head like a halo. Static is a nasty side-effect of the cold winter months but the problem can be curbed, according to Collinge. "If you find your hair getting static when going from cold weather into a warm centrally-heated house, try turning down the heat setting on your dryer," he advises.
My hair colour looks so dull and lifeless during the winter. What can I do without the sun to brighten it up? "If you live in the city, winter can be an especially bad time for your hair. The pollution in the rain can leave dulling deposits," Joel Goncalves explains. "Use a clarifying shampoo daily to get rid of residues that may discolour your hair."

There has been a lot of research into the benefits of Chocolate and the beneficial qualities it contains. For instance, did you know Chocolate is an Anti Ageing Therapy. The antioxidant concentration in the cocoa is twice that of red wine, two to three times that of green tea, and four to five times that of black tea. Antioxidants are thought to play an important role in cancer prevention and slowing the effects of aging. Combine it with Oxygen and Water, and you have a powerful and potent defence against the effects of ageing. It is also used to smooth wrinkles due to its anti-oxidant properties. It rejuvenates the skin. The anti-oxidant properties prevent the free radicals from causing damage to the skin’s elastin, other protein and collagen. Chocolate has several ingredients that can potentially affect your skin. Chocolate also contains fats such as cocoa butter or shea butter. Both of these are used routinely as topical moisturizers and as anti-inflammatory agents. Shea butter can also used as a skin softener. It has a nourishing effect on the skin. One can exfoliate the dead skin cells and regenerate news ones. Hydration of the skin is possible. Chocolate is a good moisturizer. Uma Thurman, Madonna and Victoria Beckham are all reported to indulge in chocolate facials. Raw cacao (cocoa) powder is now considered one of the worlds most beneficial super foods emerging in our world today. The Cacao Tree was worshipped by the Mayan civilisation who believed it to be of divine origin, Cacao is actually a Mayan word meaning "God Food" For more information contact Calm Beauty Telephone: 07830 902308 Netherfield Road, Sandiacre NG10 5JN

Replacing your teeth is more than trusting someone with your smile. Your appearance and image are at stake as well as your day to day functioning when eating and talking. It is essential that you have your dentures inspected annually along with a check up on your oral health, or more frequently if necessary. Dentures need attention for a variety of reasons: when they become loose, when teeth or denture base discolours, when tooth surfaces become flat, when you develop deep lines around your mouth, when your chin sticks out and the corners of your mouth are constantly wet, when you stop smiling and feel embarrassed. Sunshine Denture can repair, re-line, fit and make dentures on site at their clinic in Long Eaton. They provide and manufacture quality precision dentures. With over twenty eight years experience they are able to provide dentures using the most advanced techniques available. Do you suffer from frizzy, curly, unruly and damaged hair? Then the Brazilian Keratin Smoothing Treatment is the only answer! Developed in Brazil, hence the statement “Brazilian Blow Dry” it’s a new procedure created as the long lasting solution. Made from natural, herbal ingredients and with no negative effects, your hair will feel softer, more manageable and in exceptional condition following application. Treatment time depends on the type of the hair but the effects can last from 3 – 5 months. Subsequent treatments will build on the previous application enabling the effect to last even longer. Once completed other benefits are: • Frizz problems caused by rain, damp and humidity are completely eliminated • Moisture is sealed into the hair • Unruly hair is smoothed without making it flat and lifeless • Time and effort needed to style your hair at home is dramatically reduced This process can be used on all hair types including bleached and coloured hair, regardless of condition. Afro/Caribbean hair may require pre-relaxing in order to obtain a satisfactory result. Results on virgin hair may not be quite as good as those achieved for more porous, colour treated/pre-straightened hair. A shampoo and conditioner is required to maintain the effects but this is included free within your treatment and again for the return blow dry 3 days later. For more information call Ronald Masters on 0115 973 33006

Then why not try I-Lipo from Chromogenex the revolutionary new system for fat reduction and body shaping treatments. Treatment is quick and uncomplicated and can be completed in just thirty minutes. Ideal for a lunch time visit! breeze who’s new From the age of 12, when his parents bought him his first computer, Lee Davies developed a keen interest in what you could do with a computer and how they work. “I remember being very curious about what was inside these things. So one day, without my parents knowing, I opened it up and had a play around! Since then, Lee has completed a degree in Computer Software and Hardware engineering and has now accumulated over twelve years of experience, writing and designing software, maintaining and building computers and analysing the needs of computer users. Lee has worked all over the UK and also three years working in Istanbul, Turkey. Settling back into Beeston in 2005, Lee’s wife is now expecting their first baby in April. “I’ve always wanted to run my own business. So, to have a role in my local community allowing me to be nearer home and my family is very exciting indeed.” Lee says, “These days, computers play a role in almost every aspect of our lives - and they are getting more complicated every year! Most people don’t realise that you need to look after your computers in the same way as you do your car or your central heating system. If it’s not serviced or maintained in the right way it can start to develop serious problems.” Please contact Davies Computers Services on 0115 925 5565 or 07900 business 322884 for any computer problems or questions

Martin Smith has been a qualified psychotherapist since 2000 running a highly successful private practice, ITC Therapy, at Chilwell Road in Beeston. He has recently moved to new premises on Derby Road in Long Eaton. In his private practice, Martin has specialised in treatment for a range of conditions including anxiety disorders and psychological trauma; he also sees clients for a variety of other issues including stress, depression, obsessive behaviours and relationship issues. Over the past ten years he has developed his practice and his qualifications which culminated in him obtaining his PhD in psychology in late 2006. He has both the qualifications and the experience making him a well sought after therapist helping individuals to, as his practice suggest, take control. Martin takes a practical, solution focused approach, which supports individuals and allow them to regain control of their lives. Martin utilises a wide range of therapeutic techniques and interventions which concentrate on getting people out of their current state and moving forward to new goals whilst at the same time builds a foundation from which they can regain control of their life. This foundation can also prevent people falling back into past patterns and once that safe guard is put in place progress can often be fast and permanent. Martin highlights the importance of having a flexible approach to suit the client rather than forcing them down a treatment path which is not right for them. Martin firmly believes that conditions such as stress, anxiety and depression should not rule people’s lives and has worked with many client’s to break the negative cycle that so often engulfs them and all aspects of their lives. If you want to take control and keep control or know a family member or friend who would benefit from positive solution focused therapy, then call now on 07 973 410 010 to make an appointment or email on mjs@taking-control.co.uk. Martin does appointments at times to suit including evenings and weekends so call him down and start to take control.

breeze promotion ARE YOU HAVING NEW YEAR RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS?
E
arly January is the busiest time of the year for family lawyers as clients seek advice on family breakdown. Christmas and holiday periods can be a stressful time for many families, as the pressure to meet unrealistic expectations, as well as the added financial strain at this time of year can be too much for some couples. If there are already problems in a relationship, the added pressures at this time can result in some couples deciding they have had enough and that it is time to separate. This makes it important to get proper legal advice. If there are children, which parent should they live with and how often they will see the other parent? Should there be a shared care arrangement? A house may have to be sold or transferred. There may be concerns about debt issues. How much maintenance should be paid? Should there be a divorce or should there be a trial separation? It is a very emotional time for all the family and it is essential that independent legal advice is obtained. At Ellis-Fermor and Negus they aim to give quality legal advice sensitively delivered, and a sympathetic listening ear. As members of Resolution, they are committed to resolving disputes in a non confrontational way. “We aim to help guide people through this difficult time in their lives so that they can move forward in a positive way, and will advise on the options available so that they feel able to make decisions that are best for their family situation. If you need such legal advice please call their family solicitors Sarah Slack or Hannah Bramley at the Beeston office on 0115 922 1591.

GREEN FINGERS
If you’re making any green-fingered New Year’s resolutions for 2010, try to make them realistic and achievable.
B
ear in mind the amount of time you have available. If you’re extremely busy at work you’re unlikely to have time to totally re-landscape your garden on your own. If you have a bad back, don’t resolve to double dig a vegetable patch unless you have plenty of volunteers to help. Make the resolution something that you will be able to do with the time and space you have vailable. Here are a few suggestions for more achievable projects. Go on a gardening course. One of the most widelyavailable courses is the RHS General Certificate in Horticulture, aimed at both the career gardener and the dedicated amateur. A list of colleges which run the course can be found on the Royal Horticultural Society’s website a www.rhs.org.uk. If you just want a lecture or a weekend workshop, try the National Trust, which has a variety of events throughout the year. Go t www.nationaltrust.org.uk for details.

Rent an allotment. As the push to grow your own fruit and veg continues, having an allotment is an ideal way for people to grow their own produce. It may be time-consuming, but if you don’t have enough space in your own garden for a vegetable patch, acquiring an allotmen may be the answer, especially if you can persuade the whole family t take part. Grow from seed. If you don’t want to spend a fortune at the garden centre, pick up some packets of seeds, some seed trays and compost, make some of your windowsills available and start growing in late winter and early spring from seed. You don’t need masses of room to be productive. Think about the annual bedding you like, which you might normally spend a lot of money on, and grow it from seed. It should save you a fortune and you’ll probably have more plants than you would if you filled trolley at the local nursery. You don’t need a greenhouse o conservatory to enjoy success. Create your own compost bin. It may take a day to clear the area where you will house it, but it will be worth it. Ideally, have two compost containers - one which can be filled and then left for the compost to rot down while the other is being filled up. The container needs to build up heat inside so to avoid holes in the sides. Make the bin out of wooden slats. The area should be at least 1m (3ft) squared. If you have an open compost bin, turn the compost waste every three months to ensure that the material around the edges breaks down properly. Cover the compost heap with plastic sheeting or old carpet in winter or rainy weather to keep the heat in and excess water out. A free-standing compost heap should take six to 12 months to rot down sufficiently for the compost to be used. It should be a dark, crumbly consistency when it’s ready.
THREE WAYS TO... Succeed with permanent container plants. 1. Don’t plant small subjects straight into large containers, as their roots will be engulfed by too much wet compost and they may rot. Start them off in small pots and pot them on gradually, in spring. 2. Unless otherwise stated, use a mixture of equal parts John Innes No 2 potting compost and a soilless potting mix for containers. 3. Apply an appropriate slowrelease fertilser in spring to encourage healthy growth.

The Inner Wheel Club of Church Wilne members were delighted to welcome Margaret Pay and the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The Inner wheel Club also helped with the Rotary Charity Horseride last year, providing hot refreshments and drinks for the riders as they finished the course. Monica Welbourne held a Knit and Natter evening at which many bags for overseas were made up. Monicas' Coffee Morning in aid of Overseas quickly followed this, and it was a great success. The club also welcomed Linda Smith, who gave an interesting talk and demonstration of flower arranging. Their newest member, Derinda Welbourne-Hull talked of her work for Family Social Services.
