breezeappeal Heart disease kills three times more women than breast cancer but by turning red in Feb, you can help the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to reduce this number. Turn heads, warm hearts and wear red on February 24 for the BHF’s National Wear Red Day. As part of National Heart Month the nation’s heart charity is calling on Nottinghamshire to brush down their red dresses, shake out their red locks or even unlock their most precious Louboutins to help raise valuable money for its fight against heart disease. It can be a touch of red for those who want to be more alluring or it could be a full blown outfit dedicated to the ‘emotionally-intense’ colour. With a suggested donation of just £1, women, men and children around the country will make a big difference in beating the UK’s biggest killer on National Wear Red Day. As well as dressing in red, supporters can also hold their own event – doing whatever they please. One event can make such a difference. Last year, Take Heart, an East Midlands BHF affiliated Heart Support Group, supported Red for Heart by organising a quiz night which raised over £100. This gift could help to fund a cardiac nurse working on the BHF Heart Helpline for a full day. Our Nurses offer information and support to the 2.7 million people living with heart disease in the UK. It’s also a leap year which means there is an extra day you can use to help the nation’s hearts. The bonus day could be used for a Wear Red Day if you can’t fit it in on February 24 but, if red isn’t your thing, there are other ways of getting involved and sharing the love. You can pen your treasured one a Love Note for a suggested donation of £1 and have it posted in one of BHF’s shop windows for all to see. What’s more, any women thinking of taking advantage of the leap year can use the heart-shaped notes as the perfect way to pop the question. Or buy your loved one a gift such as a Sweetheart Hot Water Bottle or Heart Cufflinks – there is a whole array of heart-warming gifts at BHF’s online shop. http://giftshop.bhf.org.uk/ The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is the nation’s heart charity dedicated to saving lives through pioneering research, patient care, campaigning for change and by providing vital information. Heart disease remains the UK’s biggest killer. There are almost 2.7 million people in the UK living with coronary heart disease and every six minutes someone dies of a heart attack, so it urgently relies on donations of time and money to continue its life-saving work. Its vision couldn’t be much more ambitious - a world where people no longer die prematurely from heart disease. To find out more and to order your free Red for Heart Fundraising Kit, which is packed full of red themed ideas for all ages. Visit bhf.org.uk/red or call 0300 330 0645

Wollaton Village Day Nurseries were established in 1994. The buildings have been specifically designed with children in mind. The four Nurseries in the group are located in Wollaton Village centre, Bramcote village on Chapel Street, Eastwood on Church Street and in Heanor on Wilmot Street behind the health centre. They all have a friendly atmosphere of home with an educational environment. They take children aged between 6 weeks and 5 years and some of their Nurseries run a holiday and after school club. The four Nurseries follow the group policies regarding childcare but each unit operates its own opening times and price structure, general opening times are from 8am to 6pm, but longer hours can be accommodated for. “We have adopted this system to try and give the parents at each Nursery a more flexible service to fit into everyday working life. For instance the Bramcote Village nursery operates a pay as you go system to accommodate shift workers, and the other sites have similar options available”. The buildings provide the highest standard of safety and security. The access to each building is controlled by an electronic latch and closed circuit security cameras are installed throughout. All the nurseries are set in a well established secure grounds with play areas, consisting of lawns and large play grounds. “Our aims are to give the children a good foundation and prepare them for the future, to achieve this we have a team of committed Nursery Nurses to provide a wide range of activities and experiences for all our children to enjoy. We recognise that our staffs are the most valuable resource in the provision of high quality child care; we are therefore committed to a policy of staff development and continued improvement of the quality of care given. In addition to the Nursery staff, we also have a qualified teacher who will spend time with small groups of children from the pre-school unit”. The Nursery operates a Key carer system whereby every child will have a member of staff who will get to know your child well and to whom you can go to with any concerns. Call 0115 922 2454

Domestic Abuse affects 1 in 4 women at some point in their lives. The abuse can be to a woman, man or child. It takes many forms, emotional, sexual, physical, financial or verbal. Domestic Abuse does not discriminate against age, sex, race, colour, religion, culture or background. Breeze meets an organisation that can help... Midlands Women's Aid wishes all our supporters a Happy New Year and we extend our thanks to all who supported our fund raising efforts during the Christmas period.
Celebrating Forty Years of Women's Aid In November 1971 Women's Aid was formed. The organization is now forty years old. This means that over a generation of women and children experiencing Domestic Abuse have benefited from the services provided. In the days before Women's Aid women had no choice but to stay with their violent partners as there was no where to go. Support was limited and statutory agencies had little or no sympathy or understanding towards the effects of Domestic Abuse. Women's Aid has worked hard since 1971 to raise awareness of Domestic Abuse and its effects on families experiencing such abuse. We work in partnership with all statutory agencies to offer women a whole range of options. Women no longer have to stay in a violent relationship. “We offer Outreach support for women and children to inform them of their options, support them to make decisions about their future, offer refuge for women that need to leave their homes and support them to secure re-housing. We offer training around increasing self esteem, confidence building and employability skills to name but a few. However, due to continued cuts in government funding many of our services are at risk. We have to raise more money by our own efforts. This year as part of the birthday celebrations we plan to hold fund raising events throughout the year and we ask you to support us in these endeavours. This could be by sponsoring an event, donating a raffle prize or volunteering your time. The 8th March 2012 is International Women's day. Throughout the month we intend to hold several events celebrating women and women's issues. We are interested in hearing from local women from all walks of life who have stories about women's achievements, their experiences overcoming difficulties and/or their input into the Community. We have many other fund raising events planned throughout the year and some of these will be advertised in next months issue. If you would like to be involved in these celebrations or wish to donate to our organization, please contact Cathy on 0115 9257647 or write to Midlands Women's Aid, P.O. Box 8, Beeston, Nottingham. Why the Dojo? People practice Karate for a number of reasons, to get fit, to defend themselves, to gain confidence, to gain their Black Belt, maybe even to compete or just to be part of the social side of a club. As well as having a thriving children’s section every evening at The Dojo is dedicated solely to adults. They have every age and ability training there and cater for all. The Beeston based centre is lucky in that their facility is just for the practice of Karate so is equipped with specialist equipment as well as being fully matted and air-conditioned. Changing rooms with showers and hair dryers plus a lounge area for members to relax in adds to the sense that students are in a center of excellence. Add to this a comprehensive timetable of classes that enables members to train with people of a similar ability and it is no wonder that The Dojo is award winning! Having been teaching karate for well over thirty years Aidan Trimble, the former World Champion and a 7th Dan in the sport, has seen some quite spectacular changes in people that have been taught Karate during that time. The Dojo is a friendly, safe environment with experienced and helpful instructors headed by Aidan which means that its is second to none. Here is a student comment posted on a review website: ‘The Dojo is a gem in Nottingham. The purpose built facilities are excellent. The teaching provided by Sensei Trimble and the other instructors is of a consistently high standard. Most importantly for me, as a beginner, the atmosphere in class is very friendly and supportive. Recommended.’ Book your free lesson now on 0115 8754212 www.thedojo.biz

If anything were to happen …. Few of us like talking about death or the prospect of losing capacity to deal with things. In private we may admit we ought to write a Will, sign Power of Attorney, and tidy our paperwork to help the poor person who’ll take over when death or dementia or diminished desire stops us from dealing with things. All too difficult. It can help to switch focus for a moment. • Are your parents alive? • Do you have an ancient aunt or elderly friend? • Do you know who will handle their affairs if anything happens? If not, start a gentle conversation about their future. • Have they made a Will. • Where is it stored. • Who’s the chosen executor. • What sort of funeral. • Have they appointed an attorney to take charge of finances and health issues if and when they can no longer manage. • What type of powers of attorney are in place. • Any internet passwords that need to come to light. Now imagine how much easier that conversation might flow if you can say: “I’ve put all this in place, and I’m twenty years younger than you are.” For help in writing wills, creating powers of attorney, and planning for the future, contact a qualified and experienced solicitor such as Jayne Smith at Rothera Dowson on 0115 9165 200

breezegardening Starter project: Grow your own indoor tomatos: If you have recently been eating those pale, hard, tasteless, imitations of tomatos sometimes sold in shops, you may long for the real thing - this is the way you can have it! (see ‘how to grow your tomato plants from seed’ below to have plants ready for the following growing cycle under artificial light). 1. Add your soil/growing compost to the pot or simply use a growbag. Use a good fertiliser that is water soluble. 2. Plant your tomato plant into the soil - dig a hole about 1 to 2 inches into the soil and place the tomato plant into it, bedding in gently with your fingers. Fertilise regularly, but lightly, beginning about two weeks after transplanting.
It is still though a time of limited daylight. Here we look at a fun project that can bring you fresh produce even now in midwinter - all you need is a striplight, a few other bits and a longing to grow something...
Let there be light! The most important element in plant growth is of course light. What may surprise many people (including some enthusiastic gardeners!) is that it is remarkable easy to set up your own rig which will enable you to grow plants right now in the darkest months of a British winter. This might not seem like a big deal but think of the thrill of growing something that normally you wouldn’t be able to until around May or June time - the opportunity to tend and nurture, to see the fruits of your labours (quite literally if you grow food bearing plants!). This method is intended to put a bit of fun back into your hobby this winter so why not give it a try this weekend?
breezemagazine 34
3. Place the tomato plant directly under the artificial light around 30 - 40cm away from the tube. The light should be on for 12 to 16 hours every day for the tomato plant to grow effectively but not be left on 24 hours a day, since tomato plants do need some time in the dark. Generally, if you turn on the light when you awaken in the morning and turn it off before bed, it will be fine. Or use a timer to make sure the tomato plant gets enough light. Maintain a temperature rang in these mature plants at around 18c during artificial light hours and keep them higher than around 6c at ‘night” (when the light is not on). 4. Water plants thoroughly, but not too frequently. When plants start to flower, tap the main stem and larger side branches with your finger. This moves the plant slightly and encourages pollination. As you tap the plant, you may just see a small cloud of pollen falling from the open flowers. As each plant has provided its crop and has become unproductive, cut it off at the base, saving the potting soil for future transplants. Simply place the old plant on the compost heap. 5. Harvest your tomatoes. Harvest the tomatoes as soon as they are ripe for the best nutritional value. Continue to water and give light to your tomato plant, since you should be able to get multiple harvests from one plant.

The feed-in tariff is index linked and, after years of talking about climate change, feed-in tariffs are fast becoming the accepted norm when upgrading your energy use. Solar PV or Photo Voltaic panels are electricity generators on your roof, they capture the sun light and turn it into electricity which you can use or sell back to your electricity supplier, so you are getting paid twice and if you use the electricity you save on your utility bills. This almost sounds too good to be true but the government have introduced these measures in order to attract large numbers of people across the country to install their own generators, using solar PV, and help them meet their climate change targets (as there is no C02 produced with solar technology) This is the green clean way of saving on your utility bills and the environment.Furthermore, these payments are government guaranteed for 25 years. The cost of a 2kw installation starts at just £5750 and a 2kw system would be ideal for a large terrace house or semi. A detached house could accommodate a 4kw panel array with a return on investment of up to 12%! So get using that roof space above your head to earn yourself £££££! and call us today for more information with no obligation.
