WANT TO DANCE YOUR WAY INTO 2013? Doug at Start Dancin’ welcomes newcomers to their classes. He finds that the first time anyone dances they may wonder what to expect - but reassures that there’s nothing to feel worried about - it’s all about having fun and learning to dance properly. “What do I wear? people ask me this, so I can tell readers in advance that there isn't a dress code for these sessions. Just wear what you feel comfortable in, though jeans can be too heavy and trainers give too much grip. Light shoes, with out too much grip, can make dancing easier.” says Doug. For those who have never danced before Doug starts from the very beginning with the dances and will recap them each week. If you haven’t got a partner that’s not necesarily a problem as Doug tries to match numbers so contact him and he will let you know. Brrrrrr! IT’S COLD! “Well, it is Winter and may I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year. As regular readers of Breeze you know I put great emphasis on protecting ourselves by being observant ahead of the game. By that I mean, don’t wait until something goes wrong before addressing the problem. Of course, my main interest is health and we all need to pay attention to the signs and symptoms our bodies use to make us aware of problems. Specifically, let’s look at our feet! We all know that it takes very little to upset them, chilblains, corns, verrucae, fungal nails and hard skin. Even if it simply a case of nails being too long, pressure exerted on toes by shoes and even slippers can be really uncomfortable. All this boils down to the usual theme, prevention is always, always better than cure. Take time to really look at your feet and be aware of any red marks that indicate pressure points. Take time (only a few minutes) to cream your feet on rising in the morning and just before you get into bed. If you persevere with this simple regime, you will be astonished by the massive improvement you see and feel. Also, by doing this, you will get an early warning of problem areas that may be appearing”. Call Marion to make an appointment – 0115 939 3662

Home is where the ‘art’ is... Three budding artists received awards after being named winners of Broxtowe Borough Council’s ‘My Home’ art competition. Broxtowe Borough Council invited younger and older people to enter their best artwork to reflect what makes the borough their home for the chance to win one of three £25.00 gift vouchers. The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Margaret Handley, was asked to judge the entries and choose two winners from the older person’s category, and one from the younger person’s category: • Older Person’s Category – Victor Perrett, from Bramcote, for his photograph of Attenborough Village. The Mayor commented: “The reflection of the church in the water is excellent. A very artistic photograph.” • Older Person’s Category – Roger Chrich, from Chilwell, for his computer generated painting of his garden in summer. The Mayor commented: “Fantastic work, it takes skill to create a computer generated painting. This picture makes me think of summer days.” • Younger Persons Category – Ewan Parton, six, from Beeston, for his painting of his home. The Mayor commented: “Ewan has an eye for detail – very well done!” The winners were invited to the Council Offices in Beeston to receive their prize, as well as to see their award-winning paintings on display in the newly refurbished Housing Information Room at the Council Offices.

breezegardening Keeping our hobby enjoyable this winter with low cost frames & what to use them for. With still quite some way to go yet before the weather naturally warms the most obvious aspect to look at is how we can grow plants from seed and take them on to mature in the milder spring and early summertime. This is an obvious progression as we have already previously mentioned saving on your summer bedding plants by growing from seed - much cheaper than buying fully grown if you want lots of colour later in the year. But that is for a future issue. In the meantime we can grow other plants under cover. Let’s take a look at the two most basic fundamentals of plant growth in our cold winter climate: Shelter, Heating
Shelter from the storm
If you opt to do nothing else but build or buy some sort of shelter you will already save yourself from withered plants in many cases (due to the cold exposure). A very basic but effective shelter can be made from a simple lightweight wooden frame (pictured) using two layers of commonly available garden fleece pulled over the top and stapled on the Easy to make shelters - this one uses inside - neat and it works! Just lift off to fleece stapled over a simple frame. tend to plants when needed. Can be used to help overwinter succulents such as Aloe Vera but many plants will thrive under one of these so you can get them back out again in the spring. A ‘twin wall’ polycarbonate (sheeting with two layers) covered cold frame or greenhouse will do much more to keep most plants from dying off in the winter. They offer an expanded growing season by holding off the wind chill and also keeping a minimum amount of residual warmth in at night or on cold days. Unheated they won’t feel ‘warm’ as such but will make the difference in many cases as to whether a plant can survive. Certainly, frost damage should not be a problem in most normal UK winters (the severe one we had a few years ago was exceptional and would mean supplementary heating of some kind though). What size of shelter do you need? It’s an obvious question and it will be dictated largely by two factors: Garden size, Budget If funds are limited then rest assured a decent sized lean to will not cost a fortune - you can use a wall against the house as a support and even build up to it (if you don’t intend moving your shelter) using something like 25mm square treated timber. All you need to do is erect a 2meter wide by 1meter deep base and build up from this to form the height you require - usually around 1.5meters high.
breezemagazine 34
What you should end up with is a basic frame, rectangular at its base and coming up to about just below chest height. The polycarbonate sheets are simply cut to fit each side and attached using standard fitting pins which don’t damage the polycarbonate but hold it securely to the wooden frame. They are light so you can use light gauge timber as well. if you cover all surfaces except the front you can then decide to either make a pair of small doors and cover them with polycarbonate sheeting, or you could just attach heavy duty polythene sheeting to the front by fastening a batten to the top of the frame and clamping the sheet under it (this stops it tearing in the wind). Secure the front down when you ‘close’ the frame up by clamping the bottom of the sheet between two pieces of your treated timber - the weight will keep things in place. Lift the sheet up and rest it on top when you need access - simple! You can fit simple shelves on the inside as needed and remove them during the growing season to accommodate different plants such as tomatoes etc. All these materials are available from any good DIY supplier and don’t require advanced joinery skills or expensive tools. You can of course buy one at really modest cost these days.
Warm front
Then we come to heating: there’s really only one contender here for cost effectiveness and that is the standard garden paraffin heater. Keep any heater such as this away from the sides and above the heat source as it would be a fire risk. The proper garden heaters are designed to be safe though so do look at purchasing the correct type. A small one would heat the type of modest frame described above quite easily and enable you to get going with starting plants off now, ready for the spring. They use so little paraffin that you can keep topping them up and enjoy the thought that it’s not hitting your electricity bill! A small electric heater on a thermostat set to ‘frost’ will not set you back much either though - it all depends how much warmth you need for the plants you are growing. With these two basic components now at your disposal you can overwinter argyranthemums, tender perennials and even citrus plants as well grow your upcoming crops.

The 2012/13 academic year has got off to a purposeful start at Bluecoat Academy Sixth Form. 350 young people enrolled in September, including record numbers staying on after their GCSEs, as well as those joining the Sixth Form from a range of other schools across the City and County. This number represents a 50% increase over the past six years and these numbers have been boosted by the particular success and popularity of Science and Maths courses, with over 70 students opting for Chemistry A Level and Further Maths, now an established part of the curriculum. Other new courses in September included Photography A Level and a Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Creative Media. Year 13 students have completed university applications, including a number of medicine and Oxbridge applicants. Students are hoping to repeat the examination success of the past two years, including 100% pass rate at A Level, with 50% of all entries achieving A*, A or B grades. Master classes have run at lunchtimes over a 6-week block this term for Year 11 and 12 students, run by two members of

staff who are themselves Oxbridge graduates, to help aspiring and gifted students to excel in either the Science/Maths/Technology or the Arts/English/Humanities spheres. At the same time, the Sixth Form remains committed to the same inclusive ethos of the rest of Bluecoat Academy; 10 young people with Special Educational Needs embarked on a one-year Foundation Learning course in Life Skills, as well as literacy and numeracy, in September. Also this term, 50 Sixth Formers studying A Level Maths have supported younger students, by mentoring small groups of Year 9 students in Maths every Thursday. Whatever a young person’s background or aspirations, Bluecoat Academy Sixth Form is a place where everyone is known as an individual and supported to achieve their best.

Just how much noise can a group of children make when given encouragement? Hearing Dogs for Deaf People want you to help them find out by raising sponsorship for some sort of noise related event. Hearing dogs alert their deaf recipients to those everyday sounds we take for granted such as the alarm clock, door bell or baby cry, and danger signals such as the smoke alarm as well as giving greater independence, confidence and companionship. In 2008, Hearing Dogs began a ground breaking project to determine if deaf children could benefit from the profoundly lifechanging experience that a hearing dog can bring. It was well documented that for an adult a hearing dog can improve confidence, relief the stress, isolation and anxiety that deafness causes. Could a hearing dog do the same for a deaf eight year old child? The answer was a very positive ‘YES’. Now we all know that children love nothing more than to make a great deal of noise, especially if they know it will annoy the grown-ups and to capitalise on this, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People are inviting groups of children to organise an event called ‘Let’s hear it for deaf children’ to raise funds to train more puppies as hearing dogs for children. The idea is for the children to be sponsored to make noise, preferably with some sort of ‘doggy’ theme like singing ‘How much is that doggy in the window’ while accompanying themselves with home-made musical instruments such as dustbin lid cymbals, old pots and pans or anything else that will add to the cacophony. With Christmas approaching, perhaps the noise could be singing Christmas carols or playing instruments at a festive party. And of course while not all adults will sponsor children to make as much noise as possible, nearly everyone will pay them to stop! To register your event and receive a fundraising pack full of ideas and advice from Hearing Dogs spokesdog ‘Kurt’ visit www.letshearit.org.uk or call Lucy Ward on 01759 322255 or e-mail: lucy.ward@hearingdogs.org.uk

START THE YEAR WITH NICE FRESH BREATH (FOR YOUR BEST FRIEND)! How’s this for a New Year resolution—get your dog or cat’s teeth in great condition and smelling fresh? Most pets over the age of five have clear evidence of dental disease, smelly breath being a common giveaway. As George, the head vet at Churchcroft Vets says: “Pet owners are slowly becoming more aware of the importance of healthy teeth and gums which are vital for a comfortable mouth. Ongoing care is mostly about brushing the teeth and we have more and more owners who are able to manage this. However, just as with people, nothing will help a mouth with infection and tartar until the teeth are professionally cleaned”. To help all dog and cat carers get their pets’ mouths perfect, Churchcroft are offering a massive 30% off all dentistry in January and February. If you are unsure as to whether your pet’s teeth are fine or in need of attention, you can take advantage of a FREE dental check at Churchcroft. George and Jon the vets there can show you any existing problems or, if everything is in perfect order, discuss with you how to care for your pet’s teeth to keep them tiptop. George also asked us to say a big thank you to all who supported their quiz in December to raise money for Animal Accident Rescue Unit. Your generosity raised £150 to help care for injured animals.
