new year new you

Each year brings new hope, both on a personal level and also for the collective benefit of our community.

After a difficult and prolonged period of economic strain are we at last emerging into better times for local businesses who have been working hard to remain in good health amidst many challenges? Let us hope that the natural economic cycle is turning the wheel back in the favour of those who have been an integral part of local life, the shops that we see almost as familiar as our friends and beacons of our main streets. When we choose to use local businesses we give people a chance to build their lives amidst those they know and the place they care about. The campaigns to encourage us to do this recognise that, perhaps we can no longer take for granted the bustling high street and the sense of vibrancy that it can give to our everyday way of living. Family members who may often set up their own business in the area can see and feel their own sense of belonging when they are able to develop an idea and make it real. In the wider community we are very fortunate to have many groups who bring people together to enjoy activities or interests that are shared. Still others offer support for a variety of needs. As with any other local area it is often the combination of things that makes us feel that we live somewhere in particular, somewhere with character and history rather than simply a plot of land with houses on it. Still, as we see further growth and a renewed building development with at least some housing needs being met, we also can detect that new areas need well established ones to tie them into something that creates a sense of long standing permanence. The area has never stood still, even though it may seem that way for certain periods. New developments are in evidence all around us and are a reminder that we live in a popular and viable part of the country. As we turn the corner yet again and begin our new year we look to live our lives maybe a little better than the last. Maybe for those who have been thinking of joining a group this will be the year they get up and Het involved - a new sport or a walking club. Maybe even something creative and rewarding such as drama! Whatever your hopes and aspirations this year let us all recognise the strengths of living where we do and use our local services, our local resources as much as we can. Let us begin the new year with a smile and a practical sense of optimism - Happy New Year Breeze Readers! New Year’s Resolution: “Write a Will” Why writing a Will should be at the top of anyone’s list of things to do in 2014. It’s time to think about those New Year’s Resolutions. We’ve all been there, stepping into a brave new year with the very best of intentions, only to fall at the first or second hurdle. Research shows that most of our New Year’s resolutions come a cropper before we’ve even reached the end of January The main problem is that we set ourselves tasks that are too ambitious, or which demand too much of our time and energy and will-power. But there’s one simple New Year’s Resolution that everyone over 18 should consider. It requires very little will-power from you, and gives you masses of control in return. Make a Will! Getting together with family and friends at Christmas and New Year reminds us that none of us lives forever. And when we do shuffle off this mortal coil, how will anyone know what we want to happen with what we leave behind? Do we know ourselves? Who needs a Will? It’s a fairly short list: Anyone with children. Anyone without children. Married couples. Unmarried couples. Couples about to get married. Separated and divorced people. So pretty much everyone. If you die without a Will, you die intestate. The law imposes rigid “intestacy rules” which are rarely the best solution for those you leave behind. English law allows you a huge say in who gets what and when, but you have to write a Will, not leave it to chance. You’ve probably noticed that there are a lot of unqualified will-writers out there who know a bit about the law. We often have to sort out their mistakes. To be sure of getting the right solution for you, there needs to be a resolution by you: “To see a solicitor and make my Will in 2014.” For help with any Wills, Probate or Trust matter, please contact the Wills, Probate and Trust team at Rothera Dowson on 0800 158 5316. breezemagazine 9

Winston’s Wish wants you, together with your family, friends, colleagues or classmates, to join them and help raise £30,000 to support bereaved children by hosting a charity breakfast in February. It is a known fact that breakfast is an important meal helping everyone, including children, have a more positive proactive day. When you start with a nutritious and balanced breakfast, you’re getting the energy you need to embrace the morning, refuelling your body and brain and kick-starting your metabolism. Life is so busy nowadays and this most important meal of the day is often forgotten. From the 10th – 16th February Winston’s Wish is asking everyone to hold their own Great British Brekkie and revive the tradition of the Great British breakfast! This can be anything from a traditional full English to a good ol’ cuppa and toast! Let your imagination get boiling! When? 10th - 16th February 2014 Where? ANYWHERE! Your home, work, school, village hall, local pub...the possibilities are endless! What? Breakfast...think muesli, muffins, fresh fruit salad, pancakes with hot maple syrup, sumptuous berries with fresh cream, freshly squeezed orange juice, aromatic filter coffee, thick sizzling bacon in a doorstop sandwich or a delicious bagel filled with smoked salmon and cream cheese. Or why not go glam with a champagne breakfast for friends or take time out to have a tea and toast moment with your work colleagues. The possibilities are endless but they will all set you up for the day and raise vital funds for bereaved children at the same time. How much? It’s free to register, we just ask that all of your guests donate whatever they can! Speaking about the Great British Brekkie, Chloe Moorhead, Chief Brekker, said “Bring on the brekkie! We’re asking everyone across the country to join the breakfast revolution and support our second Winston’s Wish Great British Brekkie week. Every single penny counts and the £30,000 raised will allow us to directly support 250 children and their families before, during and after bereavement. This is fundamental in enabling bereaved children to face the future with confidence and hope and we need your support to make this happen.” Winston’s Wish supporter Julie who took part in the first ever brekkie said, “My children and I hosted a Great British Brekkie event last February. Our local Sainsbury's and Ocado supported us along with family and friends in our community. For our event, we chose to indulge our guests with cream cakes and Buck's Fizz! Everyone had a fabulous time and my children and I were thrilled to raise over £800 for Winston's Wish; a fantastic charity very close to our hearts.” For more information and to register please visit www.greatbritishbrekkie.org.uk or tweet us @winstonswish using #greatbritishbrekkie.

breeze what’s on Breeze meets up with Campbell Bass a Nottingham Jazz singer, he gives us some insight in to his next concert venue...

As a Nottingham Jazz singer I have performed at many venues across Nottinghamshire and around the UK, including Langar Hall that is situated in the Vale Of Belvoir, recently crowned Britain's best rural hotel 2013 by the Food and Travel Readers Magazine. The awards were voted entirely by readers of the magazine over a three-month period and presented by comedian Lucy Porter at the lavish Savoy Hotel in London. For those of you who are not familiar with Langar Hall, it is a country house that has evolved into a 12 bedroom hotel and restaurant. You may also be interested to know that Langar Hall can be traced back to when it was a Medieval castle, the original castle sitting on a different plot of land to that of the Hall we have today. Langar Hall also has ancestry linking back to Shakespeare, with the mention of the Hall's previous occupants, the Scrope family, in Shakspeare's Henry V. The Scropes did in fact inherit the property through marriage and in Henry V, Lord Scrope is last seen being taken away for execution, after accusations of plotting to kill the King. (source: Experience Nottinghamshire, article: Langar Hall is top of it's class. Sept 5th 2013)

Although their guests have included fashion designer Sir Paul Smith, musician Jools Holland, romantic novelist Barbara Cartland, comedians Jack Dee and Lee Evans and cricket commentator Henry Blofield, please do not be fooled into thinking that whilst the celebrities choose to stay there and their recent successes at the awards have turned this wonderful retreat into a den of opulence, you would be so wrong. Langar Hall is a family run business that has the same approach to all of their guests whether they are regulars or visiting for the first time, you will be met with a sincere welcome and made to feel at home straight away. I regularly preform at Langar Hall and often hear how visitors have enjoyed their stay and can't wait to come back. Recently I managed to have a casual chat with Imogen Skirving the proprietor of Langar Hall who had just got back from her research trip of Taj Mumbai, India. Still suffering with jet lag she told me all about her trip and what an beautiful part of the world Mumbai is, then proceeded to discuss the award ceremony, saying how she didn't expect to win anything but was happy to have been nominated. 'We were just going to have a night out in London and then after winning the award it just made the whole evening fabulous'. There you have it, a little in-site to Langar Hall, well worth a visit! Campbell Bass will be performing a romantic set on Saturday 15th February 2014 at Langar Hall. For more information visit www. campbellbass.com or email campbellbass11@gmail.com

ray of sunshine! Arcade Players offer a ray of Winter sunshine - Following their completely sold out production of ‘Volunteers’ in November, the well known drama group Arcade Players are busy rehearsing their next hilarious production.

“Caught in the net” is a farce by Ray Cooney, and the sequel to “Run for your Wife.” For the taxi driving bigamist John, time has moved on, and now has a teenage boy by one wife and girl by the other. The kids having met on the internet are so surprised just how much they have in common, that they decide to meet in person. When it dawns on John what is about to happen, he creates havoc trying to keep them apart. Stanley, his friend and lodger, might just help, but he has problems of his own when his rather decrepit and bemused father turns up at the house, convinced he has just arrived at his seaside holiday hotel. The situation gets even more out of hand as John tries to juggle the truth, and it’s only the twist at the end that brings some sort of sanity to this convoluted story. A classic farce written by the master of comedy, combined with the skills of the Arcade Players, will leave you out of breath, aching with laughing, and wanting more. Most definitely not to be missed! ‘Caught in the Net’ will be performed at the Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton on February 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th at 7.30pm nightly. In 2013, UK Booker, Nick Brown was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis while booking a UK tour for Austrian Band Cornerstone. Seeing first-hand the effect the disease had on the lives of their friend the band decided to raise money to help those suffer with CF in the Nottingham community.

Small Town Boy is the product of that effort, to help with the building of a state-of-the-art centre for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) sufferers at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). Small Town Boy aims to raise enough money to ensure the centre can help create a new benchmark for hospital care, both locally and nationally. Cystic Fibrosis patients are a unique group of young people who require a wide range of different treatment to manage their illness. One aspect of the condition is that patients cannot mix with other sufferers due to the risk of cross-infection. This means they miss out on support from meeting with and talking to other people with the same condition, leaving them feeling isolated and segregated. Around half of the CF population can expect to live over 38 years, although improvements in treatments mean a baby born today could expect to live even longer. “The lyrics of the song hit the CF-topic quite perfectly. You might feel as an outsider, no one cares about you, people treat you like an alien, and this probably makes you want to ‘run away‘ and find a cure. We immediately saw that connection“, says Steve, “and I really hope we can earn enough money, to keep our friend Nick Brown alive as long as possible.” Take Listen: https://soundcloud.com/landerprsoundcloud/smalltown-boy-cornerstone/s-DPjxZ

EVE Works – tackling long-term unemployment with expertise, enthusiasm and experience There are many reasons why unemployment remains so stubbornly high in parts of Nottinghamshire. Indeed, long-term and socially destructive unemployment is about far more than a lack of opportunities and the size of the employment market. It happens as a result of multiple problems and challenges, ranging from a simple shortage of skills and a lack of experience to more nuanced problems like a lack of self-esteem or confidence. EVE Works, a specialist organisation providing life-changing employment opportunities, was established in order to provide a professional, compassionate and effective response to these problems – to work closely with potential employees and bring them closer to potential employers. Originally founded by homelessness charity Framework, the service, which helped more than 1,500 people last year, recognised the very clear links between education, volunteering, and the potently transformative impact of employment. Its committed staff now use their considerable experience and expertise to help people from all different backgrounds. It helps hundreds of people into work each year by listening to their problems, acting to resolve them, and finding the right job for them. Service manager Jill Jefferies explained: “Being unemployed for any length of time is depressing and starts to affect people’s self-esteem. The longer they are unemployed, the more their debts mount up and their mental and physical health can decline. “Many people who have had jobs aren’t familiar with the modern technology, online applications and person specifications and they just need someone to work with them for a short time to up skill them and boost their confidence. The free service we offer looks at the barriers that people might be facing and gives practical support and advice on how to overcome these issues. I would urge anybody who is unemployed for several months to come and see us. We will not judge them or patronise them just listen to them and try our very best to help them.” For more information call 0800 111 4262 or visit www.eveworks.co.uk

STEVE’S STORY Steve was unemployed for more than two years after he was made redundant. During this time he lost his home, his self-confidence, but never his determination to get back into work. Steve is now working as the caretaker at a local shopping centre. He explained: “At first I wasn’t sure about EVE Works. I didn’t know what to expect but when I got here I was really pleasantly surprised. “They never told me that I had to do this or had to do that; it was about them discussing with me what my options were and helping me to follow them up... "They helped with the little things like writing a CV and preparing for interviews… They also helped me to apply for the right jobs. He added: “In myself I feel so much better than I did this time last year. A year ago I had lost all my self-confidence. I was not outgoing anymore and I felt down. I feel so much better now I am doing something with my time again.”

secret dealers

Do you have a treasure lurking in your living room? The hit TV show “Secret Dealers” is returning to ITV and is on the hunt for people to take part. Turn your unwanted antiques into serious money, without even leaving the house! Complete with a fresh look for the new series, Secret Dealers sees three rival antique dealers doing battle in private homes for items they can sell. The competing dealers tour the house inspecting everything of value. From jewellery, sideboards and children’s toys, to jumbled attics, and furniture; nothing is out of bounds to the dealers. The owners are then faced with a bonanza of surprise valuations and cash offers on some of their most prized (or not so prized) possessions. They can either accept or reject the offers and the owners must then face the choice between sentimental attachment and the chance to make a fast buck. The dealers must use all their skill to sell the items and compete to make the most profit. How to apply for Secret Dealers: We are now looking for people nationwide to take part, so if you think you have any quality antique items or collectables and want to cash them in then we would like to hear from you. breeze what’s on

Long Eaton Operatic Society Youth Group proudly presents The Rocky Monster Show. Thursday 20th to Saturday 22nd February 2014, starting at 7.30pm The Rocky Monster Show is a high-spirited, bizarre, chaotic and very funny Rock ‘n’ Roll musical. It is a riotous mix of the Addams Family, Young Frankenstein and Phantom of the Opera, with Rebecca and The Rocky Horror Show thrown in for good measure! Baron Frankenstein's descendant and ex-pop star turned Professor of Genetics, creates DNA moulds of people in his computer. How these moulds come to life as the ultimate Rock Group, headed by a clone of Elvis himself, is the highlight of the hilarious plot. More traditional monsters also add spice to the explosive mixture. Audiences will love the Rock 'n' Roll score, much of which is an affectionate sendup of the 60's. This is the group’s sixth production following their very successful concert in July 2013 where every member was able to show off his/her individual talents. The youngsters are enjoying rehearsals for this completely different and incredible style of show, and are looking forward to presenting this to everyone who enjoys light-hearted funny entertainment. They are excited to be performing once again at Long Eaton’s delightful Duchess Theatre, and would welcome all friends and supporters to put on their blue suede shoes and creep down there for a feast of nostalgic entertainment. The show takes place from Thursday 20th to Saturday 22nd February 2014, starting at 7.30pm, with a matinee performance on the Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets are available with effect from 6th January 2014 by contacting the Box Office on 07864 033663, or from the Duchess Theatre, Westgate, Long Eaton, with effect from 11th January 2014, at their regular Saturday coffee mornings.

breeze appeal Local charity, My Sight Nottinghamshire is urging more people across the county to pledge their support to the Campaign to End Loneliness by volunteering to visit a lonely and isolated blind or partially sighted person. Breeze finds out what they do and how you can help.... The campaign has been set up by an alliance of local charities to ensure that as many people as possible are doing all that they can to tackle the factors that cause loneliness. Loneliness is a huge issue for many people across the region, with as many as 51% of all people aged 75 and over living alone, which is equivalent to 41,000 people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire*. According to research by one national charity, half of the individuals asked considered their television to be their main form of company. Shocking, though, this is, imagine if watching the television was not even possible because you could no longer see it. This, sadly, is the reality for all too many older blind and partially sighted people in our local communities. What is My Sight Notts doing to tackle loneliness? My Sight Nottinghamshire is already very lucky to have a great team of home visiting volunteers, a small army of friendly individual who visit lonely and isolated people within their own homes once a week spending time, chatting, sharing a few jokes over a cup of tea, reading mail, doing a crossword together and maybe going for walk. Can you help us tackle loneliness? If you can spare some time each week to visit an elderly blind or partially sighted person living near you, then we’d love to hear from you. One person who did just that is Rachel Imms who has been volunteering for My Sight Nottinghamshire for over a year as a home visitor, Rachel said, “I visit Florence in my lunch break because she lives just around the corner from my office, which makes it a lot easier. She’s a lovely lady and it’s been a real privilege getting to know someone I wouldn’t usually have the opportunity to meet. She’s got so many interesting stories to tell that the hour just simply flies by! It’s really rewarding to know that I can spend my lunch hour doing something worthwhile.” Make you New Years’ Resolution really count - Become a home visiting hero! www.mysightnotts.org.uk Follow us on Twitter @mysightnotts Like us on Facebook

Has your dog or cat slowed down this winter, breeze prom maybe started acting a bit older? At this time of year when the weather gets colder some pets become less keen to get out of bed and exercise or maybe become less keen to socialise with the family. Owners frequently mistake these signs as old age but they are more often symptoms of arthritis. Any one of these signs can indicate your pet has arthritis: 1) Struggling to get up out of bed or onto the sofa /into the car 2) Licking at a joint e.g. a wrist or an elbow 3) Toileting in the house 4) Being less keen to go for a walk or to go into the garden 5) Getting less keen to be stroked 6) Losing coat condition, grooming less 7) Becoming bad tempered with other pets 8) Appearing stiff when walking or dragging back feet along the ground 9) Gaining weight despite no change in feeding If your pet has any of these signs then they may have arthritis and be in pain. The best way to check is to have a thorough check over by a veterinary surgeon. A professional examination can pinpoint areas of discomfort and joints with reduced movement. Owners whose pets are treated for arthritis often report that their pet becomes much happier and more playful and generally acts more like their old selves. Churchcroft Vets are keen to help owners give their arthritic pets a better quality of life so they are offering free arthritis consultations and treatment during January. Any dog, cat or rabbit presented for an arthritis check during January will get a thorough check over by one of their veterinary surgeons, George, Jess or Jon, at no charge. Dogs with arthritis who would benefit from pain relief will also get a week of tablets free so that owners can see the difference for themselves. Why not take this opportunity to check that your best friend is not in pain? Call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and ask for a free arthritis check.

This talk will focus on two birds that reached critically low numbers. Firstly new technologies from New Zealand help to rescue a bird from near extinction so that it is now secure. Secondly a collaborative exercise by scientists from many countries is endeavoring to save a long-distant migrant suffering from habitat loss, predation and over-hunting. About the speaker David Parkin was born in Sheffield and raised on Tyneside. He started bird-watching at the age of 12, and has never stopped. Degrees in Zoology from Durham and Manchester led to the University of Nottingham in 1971 where he helped found the Department of Genetics. He has always believed that scientists have a duty to report their work to the public. David has given countless lectures to local groups and societies. breezegardening With the shortest day of the year behind us it is not too early to plan ahead for your spring & summer garden. We have tried to cover a good number of the basic knowledge areas required for a budding gardener to get results rather than frustration when planting and maintaining their garden. Planning ahead and knowing what type of garden you want to end up with later in the year can begin now. It need not be an exercise in military precision so don’t worry - we simply aim to keep in mind our goals and either buy or grow our own plants at the right time and get them where they will give their best. If you have just moved into a house with a well-established garden, then live with it for one year to see what it does throughout the seasons. If you moved house in summer you will not be aware of winter-flowering bulbs for instance. Then again, in mid-winter any summer perennials and spring bulbs already planted will not be visible yet. Do think about what you want to use the garden for - are there little ones to enjoy it with you? Or are you intent on growing your own tasty vegetables? Essential items such as a washing line or recycling bins ought to be plotted in first and plan your garden on paper, giving you chance to change your mind before you come up with the final layout. You may, upon reflection, prefer to keep a smallish corner to tend and experiment with and go for a fairly low maintenance garden - it’s no use pretending that you will have heaps of time to fully explore the possibilities of a larger garden if you know your busy life will mean an undertended garden. Be realistic but of course, also try to create the space to enjoy your hobby throughout the year. Once you have plotted out the basic items as described above, then make sure you make the effort to find out what type of soil you have (consider an inexpensive testing kit from a garden suppliers) and have a little dig around to see the type of soil structure e.g is it clay or does it have good drainage

breezemagazine 34

like sandy soil? We have covered different types of soil previously in our articles and we shall no doubt be covering them again, but broadly speaking we can have Clay, Sand, Loam (a mixture of clay and sandy soil), chalk, silty (near rivers) and peat. The simple process of adding good garden compost can help with either sandy or clay type soils - especially if you are wanting to grow vegetables. This is a starting point then for a compost bin or heap for your grass cuttings and vegetable waste. Roughly speaking you can get an idea what kind of soil is in your garden by getting a handful and if it will roll into a shiny ball easily it tends to be clay or if it’s sandy soil it won't hold a shape at all and will feel sandy/gritty. If you are near to a river you can also get soils that come from silt and feel silky whereas limestone soil will have small particles of white stone in them. The ideal, as we have previously described, is loam, and this looks dark and feels crumbly. It’s a balanced mixture of the different mineral sizes and humus (vegetable matter that has broken down into nutrient). Look at our quick plant types guide in the September 2013 issue of Breeze and reacquaint yourself ready for that trip to the garden centre. As for you handy gardeners out there, you will already be plotting your path to glory in your garden using your handy garden shelter or greenhouse along with what we have learned so far. All this may seem quite basic but as we go through the spring we can start to build our knowledge and see the results of our efforts rather than failed plants and poor vegetable crops. Whatever your plan for your garden year ahead do keep in mind the possibilities that

will open up for us as the weather gradually warms. Containers can be used to create specific growing conditions for specific plants as you can make the correct soil and compost mix separately from your main garden soil type. You also get to control drainage and the location very well - always useful fir decorative plants as we shall see in a few months. So, go on - get out there and do the basics first, then we will really get to feel why this hobby can be so very rewarding and health giving. Enjoy!

the energy squeeze We cannot escape the fact that we are in a long period of increasing energy costs. We can though escape the impact financially of the upwards energy spiral.

Over the past fifteen years energy companies have been putting up the cost of electricity and gas. Over that same period Reset Renewables have been cutting the amount of electricity people use so that, in real terms, they have been cutting your fuel bills. “This is allowing you to spend extra on holidays and shopping - a welcome relief from the constant squeeze on finances” explains John Allen, the owner. “Our business is based on providing new types of switches, sockets and light bulbs and other technologically driven items to the general public and trade at very competitive prices, some items being cheaper than wholesale.” he adds. Alongside this they sell products that will save you money. LED lamps or bulbs are a great example as they have instant light unlike the ‘old style’ energy saving lamps. Did you know that with a standard bulb, for every £1 in electricity used an LED bulb will cost less than 10p to run? “The figures in terms of what can be saved when added up across an entire household can be quite shocking and furthermore, with the reliable brands of LED that we use, there is no detriment to the quality of light when switching to these astonishingly efficient ones” says John.

breezemagazine 36

breeze advertorial

The savings are even more eye opening on heating and electricity generation via solar. For instance Reset Renewables supply and install Farho and Rointe heaters. These are a good replacement for old inefficient storage heaters and cost 30% less to run. Additionally they can be controlled via a smartphone or tablet. Currently, If you buy four or more at the same time then Reset Renewables will also install them free. “Beat that for value!” Solar panels are still great value, with possibly the best returns. You are paid to produce the electricity which you use for free but in addition you are also paid to export (put back into the grid). This means you are not buying as much electricity so it’s a win win. You can also heat a hot water tank via an immersion heater with just the electricity you were going to give back to the grid. “We sell quality German roof mounting system Solar World all black German panels at a price that will surprise. Our electricians install everything from a light switch to a full solar system. There are many ways to save on energy so pop in for a chat and let me or one of my colleagues help you save money - it’s why we opened our new shop so you can see for yourself before you buy anything” adds John. If you have a new business and would like to be featured call our team on 0115 967 8663 Meet Adam, a computer website designer and founder of All Things PC. “Since leaving school I have worked closely with computers, working at PC retailers and repair agents whilst studying software development at New College Nottingham. Selling computer equipment to the public gave me the opportunity to develop the right solution to the right person, and it turned my hobby into a career. It’s good to know that I’m able to resolve people’s problems with tailor-made solutions. Although I take on all PC related tasks, my main speciality is in the design of websites, and their day to day running and maintenance. I take a systematic approach to the whole task, looking into the needs of the business, making suggestions for the layout and text, and above all, taking an active role in the running of the website AFTER the design is done. Designing the site and making sure it’s able to do what is required is a time consuming one which realistically no small business has the time for. However, I put the time and effort in for the business and there is nothing better than seeing a completed website in all its glory. It’s great to play a part in another company’s success story. The pride in my job shows itself on your webpage. I can offer any sized business the right package with tailor-made features and support. It’s going to be one less job for your company to worry about, and one step up on improving your company’s image”. Call Adam on 07800 921 920 today

end loneliness The Campaign to End Loneliness has been set up to ensure that as many people as possible in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire are doing all that they can to tackle the factors that cause loneliness. Age UK explains the background to its efforts to end this scourge of the elderly in particular. We believe that through small changes in the behaviours of individuals we can reduce the levels of loneliness in our community. Why is loneliness such an issue It’s distressing to find out the real impact of loneliness on an older person’s health is just as damaging as lifelong smoking and alcoholism, and it’s actually more detrimental than obesity and inactivity. Some important facts about loneliness are listed below: • Over 1 million people 65 and over feel ‘always’ or ‘very’ lonely. º Over 27,000 older people in Notts feel trapped in their own home • Over 100,000 older people in Notts say the TV is their main company. • Around 39,000 older people in Notts are in contact with family, friends and neighbours less than once a week. What can be done to help? Age UK Notts believe that individuals can change the communities we live in. Even through small acts of kindness we can make a difference and alleviate loneliness in older people’s lives. The nature of the pledge can vary from something like ‘I pledge to ring my Mum at least once a week’, to ‘I pledge to arrange a regular coffee morning in my local community.’ The pledges aren’t just for individuals trying to help battle loneliness in older people’s lives. They’re to challenge people to socialise as well. Age UK Nottingham and Nottinghamshire’s Membership provides a great way for people to make new friends with others who share the same interests. It’s not simply a matter of someone feeling as if they would like ‘bit of company’ - it is a real health issue. Acute and chronic loneliness can greatly increase the onset of a debilitating range of conditions affecting mental well being as well co-ordination whin in turn affect the ability of a person to live an independent and higher quality of life. The knock on effects lead to more resources having to be channelled then into dealing with the problems this leads to for individuals who cannot function as fully as they once did. For more information on how you can help visit: www.ageuk.org.uk/notts/news--campaigns/campaign-to-endloneliness

The main initiative of our campaign to end loneliness is for individuals to make pledges that they will carry out in an effort to help older people feel less lonely. The pledges also look to help older people become more socially active. Here are examples of the kind of pledges that you could carry out: • To talk to Mrs Smith who lives opposite at least twice a week. • To volunteer for a visiting service and visit a housebound older person on a regular basis” • For our church to organise a craft group for older people in our neighbourhood once a fortnight” • To phone my parents/grandparents more than once a week” • Ask Mrs Smith if she needs anything from the supermarket” If you feel that you could carry out one of these pledges or think of a pledge of your own you can fill in the online pledge form from our website. Once your pledge has been submitted you are able to request an information pack to help you carry out your pledge.
