Advice seminars for Sole Traders, Freelancers & Micro-businesses Adam, a Nottingham businessman, is passionate about self employment. Having started his own research consultancy business, Chimera Consulting, twelve years ago, he knows how much commitment, enthusiasm and sheer hard work are needed to get up and running in business and survive and thrive. He has learned a lot along the way. “The buzz of doing your own thing and what the future might bring being a business owner is great, yet most people who are thinking of working for themselves will also have a mix of apprehension of stepping into the unknown together with being confident in their abilities.” he explains. “There is plenty of advice out there about starting up a business but nothing really prepared me for what it would be like making every single decision, dealing with every aspect of the business and the challenges I would face. I decided to design a short two hour session to cover a number of issues which will be relevant to anyone going self-employed, whatever line of work you are pursuing”. adds Adam. These seminars are a grounded in real-world ideas of what it is like to set up your own business. Adam is also a ‘Business Mentor’ to help people test their ideas, nurture their development and act as a sounding board to specifically help those working on their own. Those attending the seminar will have their seminar fee redeemed against a mentoring package of support should they wish to follow up the event with one-to-one mentoring support. “Welcome to my new venture i Build. My name is Michael Sparkes and I am hardly new to the trades having been formerly called ‘Plumbing & Tiling by Michael Sparkes’ and ‘Sparkes Bathrooms Ltd’ . This is only a name change as I want to offer a wider range of services instead of specialising in just bathrooms as I have the skills and fellow qualified trades people available to make a full property maintenance and refurbishment business possible. I loved doing the full bathroom/kitchen refurbs which is reflected in the quality of the finish and I know my previous customers will give testimony to this. I also enjoy tackling the smaller jobs - they can be completed with satisfaction in one day usually which is very rewarding for me as the customer is left with a problem solved. My skills partly stem from the family business which started back in1926 in Cambridge by my grandfather and a major input from my father. Having grown up around the trades all my life I put them to good use in 2004 when I first set up my own business. Previously I had spent some time working in engineering which I believe helped with my eye for detail , accuracy and sense of finish”. So, for any size job from a dripping tap to a full property refurbishment call Michael for a free quote on 07455 090 060 or 01773 770 136

“I lost my job, but now I’m the boss!” Things looked bleak for Stuart Milner when he was let go from the furniture store he had worked in for five years. With two young children, a new house and a wedding to pay for, it was not the time to be looking for a new job. “Unfortunately when money is tight, the last thing people want to buy is furniture,” explains Milner (31), “but the timing could not have been worse.” After applying for a host of jobs and some terrible interviews, Milner decided to take a trip back home to see his family in Nottingham. During the visit, Milner helped his father out with a couple of jobs for his conservatory cleaning business. “Dad was so busy, that he needed everyone to pitch in,” said Milner, who has lived in Norfolk for the last 12 years. “Suddenly the solution was obvious. I realised there was nothing similar in Norwich. Why couldn’t I bring Dad’s business to Norfolk?” After persuading his father to give him an option, Milner set up the Norwich branch of Conserv-A-Clean, professional cleaners of conservatories, patios & driveways. A company that cleans all Conservatories by hand and uses a high pressure jet washing system to restore outside paving areas, UPVC windows, doors and facias. “A few months later and things are really starting to look up. People are starting to see just how we can transform their conservatories and gardens for relatively little cost and no fuss. Next we are starting to work with local pubs to get them ready for when the sun finally arrives,” says Milner. For more details, go to http://www.conserv-a-clean.co.uk

breezeget your kit on NOTTS BROWNIES GO WILD! Adventurous Notts Brownies have just returned from spending a night surrounded by chimpanzees and gorillas at Twycross Zoo. Seven girls from 2nd Attenborough (St Mary’s) Brownie Unit were among more than 400 members of Girlguiding from across the Midlands who joined the two-day girl-only event at the Twycross Zoo World Primate Centre in Warwickshire. The Brownies and their Leaders spent an action-packed Saturday tackling animal-themed activities, exploring the zoo and meeting hundreds of its residents, including elephants, snakes and big cats. After dinner in the Gorilla Outpost, the girls pitched their tents and settled down for the night just yards from the monkey, chimpanzee and gorilla enclosures. Ava (9) took part in the adventure in a bid to complete her Friends to Animals badge and said ‘It’s been really good, as I have never camped before - it was unforgettable!’ Her friend Aimee (9) added ‘I would love to come again and recommend it to all my Brownie friends.’ ‘The event was a great success,’ reflected Brownie Leader Kelly Congreave. ‘The Brownies thoroughly enjoyed the camping experience. It was one of the most unusual locations ever for a Girlguiding camp and was a real adventure for the girls.’ For information on membership or becoming an adult volunteer with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire, visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

Attenborough Cricket Club are very pleased to report that one of the biggest, voluntary based building projects to have been undertaken in Attenborough in living memory - phase 1 of the ambitious ‘Inclusion Project’ - is now nearing a satisfactory completion. Planning for the project, which in essence is aimed at ensuring that those with disabilities and girls can benefit from improved facilities at The Strand, started back in January 2012. The results will give the opportunity for a wider number of people to experience the activities and get involved in the Cricket Club (phase 2 of the Inclusion Project). Much of 2012 was taken up in writing applications to source monies to enable the project to go ahead and then speaking with local people and Broxtowe Borough Council to gain the appropriate planning permission. Underpinning the project are funds from a variety of sources, including Sport England ‘Inspired Facilities’, England & Wales Cricket Board, The Thomas Cook Children’s Charity, Notts County Council ‘Olympic Legacy Fund’ plus many more smaller funders. The Cricket Club was also very grateful for the support of its own members/VPs and the local community in raising a substantial amount of money through its own ‘Buy a Brick’ scheme. The Long Eaton Ladies Circle also supported the project through its own fundraising activities. After a delayed start to the building project, work commenced in November 2012, only to be swiftly halted again by the floods in December! Fortunately, a generally dry but cold January & February

breezemagazine 24

enabled the building work to get back on track, finally resulting in the fantastic new pavilion that we see today. Examples of how the project became truly community driven, was in the amount of support given from several local businesses in delivering many ‘benefits in kind’ – materials, labour and expertise. Without this help the project would not have reached the excellent standards now evidenced. Also, the time, effort and support given by a number of Cricket Club friends & volunteers should not be understated. During the depths of winter (and a cold spring!) this reliable band of workers attended the pavilion (or what was left of the old one!) each day to ensure the work was done, supporting the contractors, and that costs were kept to a minimum. As spring came and went more and more people from the Cricket Club (young and old!) and the local community volunteered their time to help complete the redevelopments. The Cricket Club is hosting an ECB supported ‘Open day’ on Saturday 13th July, 11.00a.m – 7.00p.m where members of the local community are invited to visit the new pavilion to view the improvements first hand. Refreshments will be available. The official opening for the Pavilion is on Monday 26th August 2013 (Bank Holiday) when there will be activities for the youth section members in the morning, followed by a Past players versus Present players Celebration cricket match in the afternoon. The new pavilion can be conservatively valued at around £280k. The amount spent on the developments to achieve the improvements was substantially less, evidencing very good value for money and will benefit the local community for many years to come. Attenborough Cricket Club is extremely proud in being able to deliver a first class, new improved facility, and encourages new members of all ages and abilities, through the continued development of its Inclusion Project. For further details and information about the club please visit the club’s website at www.attenborough-cc.net

Millions are living on the edge of a crisis, only secure in their homes for a matter of weeks. At the same time, support for people who have lost their homes is being stripped away. It’s easy to see why every 15 minutes, another family in England finds themselves homeless. The survey of 2,000 people found families with children would fare even worse in the event of redundancy. Around two-in-five parents said they could not afford to pay for their home for more than a month, while a quarter said they could not meet their payments at all. This is the reality of life for so many across our local community. When people think of someone being homeless too often they

breezemagazine26

think it is just a big city issue or worse that those who become homeless somehow have made a choice which, through their own fault, has resulted in their becoming homeless. Nothing could be further from the truth. No one chooses to be homeless! The Canaan Trust has been supporting and serving the needs of our local homeless since 1995. Based in Main Street, Long Eaton the charity has places to accommodate 12 males, aged 16 to 60, at any one time. In fact the Trust supports many other individuals, male and female, who come seeking our assistance on a weekly basis – help with food, warm clothing, hygiene products, help with official paperwork. The provision of accommodation is but the visible tip of the Trust’s service and support to the homeless. Each client is given access to a comprehensive series of courses which enable them to develop the necessary life skills (literacy and numeracy, budgeting, personal hygiene, D.I.Y, health & fitness, cooking, first aid etc). The focus of our

support is to enable each individual client to rebuild their lives, to achieve the best they can achieve, and to move on positively into their own accommodation. In supporting our local homeless the Trust’s work provides the community with significant savings in terms of cost and time with less calls being made on NHS Services, demands on Council Services, and Police resources. Over the course of a year these savings can total tens of thousands of pounds. To achieve the success it does the Trust needs your help. It needs you to understand the nature and potential causes of homelessness – loose job, family breakdown, health problems (especially mental health). In the reception area at the Canaan Trust there is a picture with has the caption: ‘Do not look down on anyone unless you are picking them up’. Maybe you might consider helping the Trust as it seeks to help those who are vulnerable, without hope, isolated and often forgotten. Maybe you might be interested in volunteering. We need individuals who have all sorts of skills: maintaining bikes, art, cooking, DI.Y, teaching skills (the Trust has its own fully equipped classroom), computer skills – the Trust would be welcome your assistance. Of course the Trust does need help with funding. Everything the Trust does has to be financed. The Trust is totally dependent on the charitable donations of individuals, local organisations and groups, and some local commercial concerns. Whether you only have £1 to offer or something more the Trust is truly grateful for your consideration and support. Donations can be made on-line via www.justgiving.com/canaantrust/donat e or alternately your can donate via your mobile phone via text message – simply text the message ABED14 £1 (donation amount can vary) sending the text to telephone number 70070. Lastly donations can be sent direct to the Canaan Trust at Jordan House, 14 Main Street, Long Eaton, Derbyshire NG10 1GR

breeze appeal Girlguiding Nottinghamshire has seen another year of growth, with its current membership comprising 9,264 girls, young women and adult volunteers, up by 3.6% on last year. Nationally, total membership of Girlguiding now stands at 546,406. This has increased from 538,247, reflecting a growing demand among girls and young women for a space of their own. The news comes as girls face a set of unprecedented and complex pressures, many very different to those faced by their male peers. According to the latest Girls’ Attitudes Survey commissioned by Girlguiding:

to join us and make the most of the amazing experiences, activities and friendships which come with being a member of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire. We’d love to hear from more adult volunteers to ensure that we can keep opportunities like these open to thousands of girls across the county.’ Enquiries about membership and volunteering with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire are always welcome. • One in three girls says they would be willing to consider some form of surgery to change their appearance • Three out of five girls of secondary school age say they feel pressure to look like celebrities • Seven out of ten girls believe women are judged more on appearance than ability. Girlguiding provides a unique forum for girls to explore issues like these in a supportive, nonjudgemental environment, away from the pressures of school and boys, while learning new skills and enjoying an unrivalled range of activities and adventures. ‘There’s never been a greater need for a space where girls can share their thoughts and feelings with other girls, without feeling they are being judged, pigeon-holed or laughed at,’ says Chief Guide Gill Slocombe. ‘Girls growing up today face a dangerous combination of pressures. They are bombarded with images of how the perfect woman should look, stereotypes of how girls should act, pressures around sexual behaviour and a feeling that what they can achieve in life can be limited by their gender. Girlguiding gives girls a place to escape from these pressures and focus on building friendships, learning skills and having fun.’ Girlguiding Nottinghamshire County Commissioner Kate Royse agrees. ‘We’re absolutely delighted that more and more girls are choosing

Get a team together and be part of Nottingham’s fifth Dragon Boat Spectacular! Gable Events and Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People are inviting companies, clubs and groups of friends from across the East Midlands to enter a team in the fifth Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge. The 2013 Challenge takes place as part of the annual Riverside Festival on Sunday 4th August on the River Trent at Victoria Embankment and is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated team events in the region. Up to 50 crews are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course watched by thousands of spectators. No previous experience is required to take part in the dragon boat racing, just plenty of team spirit so why not take up the challenge? Thankfully, you don’t need the physical strength of a Steve Redgrave or the athleticism of a Jessica Ennis to be successful as teamwork, timing (and of course a little bit of luck!) will win the day. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew of up to 11 people is guaranteed a minimum of three races. Teams and spectators also benefit from being part of one of the region’s largest family festivals with a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world, staged by Nottingham City Council. In 2012, 44 teams ‘raced the dragon’, the largest in the Challenge’s history. Many of the teams were new including Beeston-based MEDIAmaker Ltd. Led by crew manager, Mike Kruft, the team met all their pre-event objectives which were; Number one, raising money for a great charity. Number two, coming together as a team on an

breezemagazine 32

occasion where it’s not just a few drinks down the pub. And Number three, promoting the MEDIAmaker brand! After the event Mike commented, “My team had a fantastic day, not only because dragon boat racing is enormously fun and we did quite well, but we found the whole event was run with enthusiasm from all the organizers, safety instructors, helms and support staff.” The Challenge’s official charity, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, is the only children's hospice in the East Midlands and cares for over 230 local children and their families every year. Katie Baxter, Events Manager at Rainbows Hospice, says, "The Dragon Boat Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for Rainbows as it gives us a chance to raise essential funds with the help of the local community. Thanks to everyone involved, we are able to continue to be there.” The top fundraisers for Rainbows will win the charity trophy plus a special prize meal kindly donated by The Oriental Pearl Chinese restaurant in West Bridgford. breezegardening The summer is finally here and we should, by now, be starting to enjoy the warmer and gentler days of our sun kissed isle. By now your garden should be full of colour and your summer bedding should be at its best. The pay back for your efforts earlier in the year. In the (hopefully!) hot weather your plants will need plenty of water so add water retaining gel crystals to their soil if you haven’t already. If you are on a water meter then make the most of your precious resource by saving all your ‘grey’ water (old wash water etc.) and water either early in the morning or evening to ensure that the plants receive as much of the water as possible without it evaporating. Here in the UK we seem to be moving towards a pattern of sudden torrential downpours and this is a very swift way to fill up water barrels if they are connected to the drain system of your house roof. Many gardeners swear by natural rain water over chlorinated tap water anyway so maybe it is time to look at setting up a water capture system. There are many on the market and are not expensive, many with overspill features which automatically push excess water into the drains when not needed. Elsewhere in the garden you should look at your perennials and cut back half of all that have flowered, such as lupins and delphiniums. This should persuade more flowers to grow later on in the season, helping to keep the blooms coming! Weed and deadhead your existing flowers regularly making sure that you check for any pests. All faded heads on the annuals should also be removed and cuttings can be taken of non-flowering shoots of shrubs and climbers. One common pest in the garden is our old friend the aphid: Aphids From time to time, aphids may attack almost any garden plant. Chemical: Lambda-cyhalothrin and deltamethrin are both contact insecticides which are effective only when sprayed directly onto the aphids. A suitable systemic insecticide is thiacloprid which is taken in through the leaves and is taken up by the feeding aphids. Naturally occurring insecticides such as pyrethrum and fatty acids can also be used. Don’t over-feed plants. Too much fertiliser will lead to lots of soft, sappy growth which will encourage aphid attacks.

Fruiting Trees All fruit trees should be pruned and fruit should be protected from birds using netting, however, check regularly to make sure no birds get trapped - let’s keep up our eco-friendly intentions as covered in previous gardening articles. The Greenhouse If you did acquire or build yourself a greenhouse make sure you keep an eye out for pests and diseases such as whitefly - fumigate or spray the greenhouse. Keep adequite circulation as a good defence against diseases when growing such as tomato plants. Although we may have cool air in the UK the sun can still be powerful under glass so to avoud wilting try whiting out part of the glass area in the height of summer. Pot Plants Continue to feed flowering pot plants. Don’t forget that a pot does not hold the water as does the open soil of your garden - you must imitate conditions that exist in nature here by watering regularly, even on non sunny days as the wind also cause water loss in plants which soon leads them to become stressed and holds back growth. ...(continues)

breezegardening On The Vegetable Plot For those of you who ventured into the world of with vegetable growing it is time to lift shallots and autumn-sown onions and complete the planting of broccoli and autumn and winter cabbage. Spring cabbage (for next year), spinach beet, lettuce and Chinese cabbage should all be sown now. The choices are many so if you fancy a try at ‘growing your own’ why not seed some cabbage now? Then you can add to this by starting your own potatoes off next January. Thinking ahead is the game when growing veg! Time to check for potatoes Back in January did you try our suggestion to get some potatoes started, ready for a delicious crop around now? (If you planted certain types of potato they will have already been ok to harvest by now). So how do you tell if your potatoes are ready? When your crop is covered by a foot or two of your soil this is a rather difficult thing to judge but don’t worry as there are indicators to tell us (without digging some up to see which can damage the plants): Within a few weeks of planting your seed potatoes, fine root hairs are produced and as these grow larger, nodules form along the roots which will form into tiny juvenile potato tubers. These young tubers will continue to swell and grow right up until the time the potato plant stem (above ground) begins to produce its flowers. As soon as this occurs, the energy from the plant will be diverted away from the production of tubers and over to the production of flowers, which leads to the formation of its fruit and seeds. As soon as they come into flower, because it is unlikely that your plants will produce and more - or any bigger - potatoes after this

point so this is the time to get gently digging and reaping the rewards of your careful work back in the cold months. That is part of the ‘miracle’ of gardening - the sense of time and lifecycles that take place. For many this is a very relaxing and reassuring aspect of the hobby. If you didn’t take up our suggestions to try this yourself perhaps bear it in mind for this winter as something to look forward to and keep alive in those rather trying months. For now though, let’s sit back a little and begin to enjoy our blooming marvelous little paradise! Enjoy!

Charity event at Churchcroft Vets to raise money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Heart disease is common in dogs and cats. In some breeds it is so common that regular screening is recommended by the breed society (Doberman’s for example). Usually, signs of a problem are not apparent until quite late in the disease. Lung disease is also common, especially in cats and elderly dogs. Lung disease has a tendency to suddenly become life threatening, just as it does with asthmatic people. Churchcroft Vets are inviting you to take your favourite furry friend along in the afternoon on Saturday July 20th for a FREE heart and lung check. Churchcroft will be taking donations on behalf of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People to help to raise money for this excellent charity. All dogs and cats (in cat carriers) are welcome as are all members of the family. Vets George and Jess will check the heart and lungs of all cats and dogs attending this event to make sure everything is tickety-boo. If there are any abnormal noises they will discuss these with you. The vets will also give you advice as to what to check for yourself if you suspect a problem and how to help in an emergency situation. As an extra bonus there will be ice cream for all who correctly answer a simple question after their pet’s check-up (or for a small donation to Hearing Dogs)!

breeze pets corner HEARING DOGS FOR DEAF PEOPLE 30 YEARS OF LIFE-CHANGING PARTNERSHIPS Cast your mind back to 1982 – Prince William was born and Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ album hit the shelves before going on to become the biggest selling album of all-time. At the same time, world-renowned vet Dr Bruce Fogle and Lady Beatrice Wright of the then Royal National Institute for Deaf People (now Action on Hearing Loss) were about to introduce to the UK a charity that has since gone on to radically change the lives of over 1,750 deaf people right across the country. The scheme involved training dogs to alert deaf people to a range of sounds in the home, and also in the workplace and public buildings. But more than anything else, these dogs would give their deaf recipients greater independence, confidence and companionship in the face of having such an isolating disability. After a great deal of hard work by many, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People was launched at Crufts in 1982 – and as they say, the rest is history. A former police dog-handler Tony Blunt was appointed as administrator and trainer for the scheme alongside Gill Lacey – its first placement counsellor – with work initially beginning at Gill’s home in the Oxfordshire village of Chinnor. By 1984, a total of 16 deaf people were on the Charity’s waiting list and nine dogs had been successfully placed, including hearing dog Skipper who was the first to accompany a recipient to a place of work. This just happened to be at the BBC Television Centre in London and Skipper even received his own BBC staff identity card. breezemagazine 38

After taking its first tentative steps in the mid-1980s, the Charity began to make real strides both within the dog world and of course, with deaf people in the UK as time moved on. By 1986, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People became a registered charity and moved to a new property in neighbouring Lewknor and by 1990, the Charity had doubled in size. The Charity also placed their 100th dog in 1990 – a Springer-Spaniel Cross aptly-named Spring. Demand for hearing dogs continued to grow at a pace and in the early-nineties, a BBC Lifeline Appeal was launched with the main objective of setting up a second centre in the north of the country. This came to fruition by 1993 when the Beatrice Wright Centre was opened in North Yorkshire in recognition of Lady Wright. Also in that year, the 200th hearing dog, Jess, was placed. By 2013, the Charity had created over 1,750 hearing dog partnerships with over 800 in operation nationwide today. Recipients have spoken of a sheer weight being lifted from their shoulders once a hearing dog has been brought in to their lives. Also the fact that all hearing dogs, when in public, wear a burgundy jacket while with their recipients helps to bring an all-too-rare visibility to deafness. To find out more about Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, go to their website: www.hearingdogs.org.uk.

breeze appeal Local groups and organisations with great ideas to make their communities an even better place to live are now invited to apply for funding to turn their ideas into reality. With new funding available for local groups in Nottinghamshire People’s Health Trust has just launched Active Communities in Nottinghamshire and Nottingham – a funding programme for local people wanting to create fairer places to grow, live, work and age. Using money raised by HealthRegard through The Health Lottery, People’s Health Trust is looking to invest in projects that support people living in the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods of Nottinghamshire and Nottingham. Active Communities is a funding programme for not-for-profit groups with an income of less than £350,000a year, seeking investment of between £5,000 and £25,000 a year, for projects lasting up to two years. The projects should take place within a small area for a small group of people, such as 20 or 30 streets or a couple of villages. John Hume, Chief Executive, People’s Health Trust, says: “We’re looking to support ideas designed and run by local people which help create even stronger links and ties within communities. Whether it’s a tenants and residents’ mediation group or a computer skills group for older people, we’re interested to hear about it.” “Applying couldn’t be easier - it’s about local people telling us what would make their local community an even better place grow, live, work and age. It’s an online process with a step by step guide from start to finish.” The closing date for applications is midday on Monday 15 July 2013. To find out more about Active Communities, visit www.peopleshealthtrust.org.uk

Active Communities People living in the poorest neighbourhoods in Britain die, on average, seven years younger than people living in the richest neighbourhoods. What’s more, they will spend 17 years more of their shortened lives with an extra disability and have a lower quality of life. We believe that where people live should not unfairly reduce the length or the quality of their lives. Currently recruiting for education.... FC Africa is a 12-month course for 17-24 year olds. Originally the course was designed for individuals not in education, employment or learning, but it is now open to anyone wishing to increase their skills and take part in the trip of a lifetime. Students spend nine months at Notts County, studying City and Guilds qualifications in Sports and Leisure. On completion of this element, students travel to Africa for three months to work in the community sector within different local organisations, including blind and deaf schools, as well as disability centres. The Futsal Scholarship nurtures aspiring and weekend footballers who want to develop their skills and technique whilst gaining a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, worth three A Levels. This gives students a strong grounding and enables them to access the sports industry and forge a career for themselves. Scholars train with our highly trained, FA qualified coaches, represent Notts County in the Futsal League and are still able to fully commit to their weekend football club. Foundation Football Learning is a bespoke learning programme developed for students who leave school with GCSEs at D grade and below. The course allows male and female learners aged 16-18 to play football in their local college league and re-engage with education. Learners gain Levels 1 and 2 in Maths and English, as well as BTEC Levels 1 and 2 in Sports and Leisure. The course allows students to improve their employment prospects and go on to further their education. All our Education projects are based at Meadow Lane and are accessible to people no matter where they live. To find out more about the courses above, including course syllabuses and application forms, please contact Education Manager, Martin Carruthers on 0115 955 7215 or email mc@nottscountyfitc.org.uk
