Meet Yianni the owner and restaurateur of this fabulous Greek retreat. Yianni and his staff have built up a tight knit successful business over the last eight years. The atmosphere of the restaurant really reflects this commitment to bringing the real taste of Greece to our palettes. Yianni, originally from Rhodes oversees his talented team of chefs and waiters. His dedication throughout the years has enabled him to now enjoy a reputation that goes before him. Having spent most of his time in Greece, moving to England to be with his wife was an opportunity to develop his skills. In the beginning Yianni, a self taught chef used the expertise of his own mother to make sure he was being true to the traditional cooking of the Greek dishes - often calling her to get the dishes just right! Now this tradition continues and as you make your way through the dishes you can really taste the home cooked results and the use of fresh ingredients. “Everything is cooked from fresh, using marinades, olive oil, vegetables and herbs to bring out the flavour of every dish. Nothing is bought in, I make sure that what you are tasting could come straight from that of my Mommas table!” For those of you who have experienced Greek cuisine on holiday you won’t be disappointed. Not only is the food authentic the atmosphere itself will remind you of a happy time. Yianni has really put in extra effort to give you the full charm of Greece. At the rear of his restaurant is the newly refurbished annex, created to give you the alfresco dining experience. Sitting in this part of the restaurant definitely makes you think you could be away from everything and enjoying a relaxed meal as you would on holiday. For those of you who have never been to Greece then this is the exact place to give you a taster! Delicious selections of ‘Mezes’ are available. A taster of small dishes for you to try, usually served with pita bread, olives, yogurts, salad and if you wish, washed down with Ouzo!

Choices of dishes can also been seen on the ‘Specials Board’ a massive chalkboard with carefully selected menus at excellent prices. The mussels come highly recommended along with a selection of fish dishes. Traditionally Greek cuisine features the dominant use of nuts and honey, a reflection of the tastes that can be experienced. Looking through the menu you can see how Yianni is determined to offer you a full authentic Greek family affair with dishes such as Tirokeftedes, Yiannis aunt's special recipe cheese balls, served with a red roasted pepper coulis and olive pate. Or Kolokithokeftedes, Yiannis sister Filia's recipe. Three tasty courgette fritters on a bed of mint feta sauce. Whichever part of the family Yianni’s dishes have come from you won’t be disappointed. It’s creepy crawly month at Churchcroft!

As the weather warms, our family pets start to become home to more and more unwanted visitors. It can be confusing working out the best means of control for your pet. To help you find your way to the best method of controlling these bugs in your dog or cat, the experts at Churchcroft are having a “Purge the Parasites” month during June. There are pictures and information up about all the common parasites and lists of which products can be effectively used to treat them. For those with a desire to see the critters in the flesh or who’d like to take the time to discuss these bugs and their treatment in more detail, senior vet George will be hosting a FREE open afternoon on Saturday June 18th from 2-5pm. They will have on display fleas, ticks and mites retrieved from their own patients in the last month or two. Why not go along and have a look at these pests in the flesh and under the microscope? NOMINATE LOCAL HEARING DOGS To celebrate Hearing Dogs Week 2011, national charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is for the first-time inviting people from Nottinghamshire to nominate local hearing dogs that are transforming the lives of local people with hearing loss for an inspirational Hearing Dog of the Year Award 2011. Lucy Nalton Community Fundraising Manager for Hearing Dogs in Nottinghamshire says “We are encouraging members of the public from Nottinghamshire to nominate local hearing dogs that they know perhaps through family, friends or work colleagues, for a national Hearing Dog of the Year Award, which recognise the profoundly life-changing difference hearing dogs make to the lives of their recipients from all over the UK.” Local people can nominate hearing dogs they know for one of three Hearing Dog of the Year Awards; Life-changing,
Heroic or Team/Dual-purpose Hearing Dog of the Year. Nominations can be made via the Charity’s website www.hearingdogs.org.uk. Supported by celebrities such as Ben Fogle, Matt Baker, Kate Humble, Tim Vincent and Pam St Clement, the Charity currently has over 750 working hearing dogs in the UK transforming lives of isolation and loneliness into lives of independence, confidence and security by training dogs to alert deaf people to important household sounds and danger signals such as the alarm clock, doorbell and smoke alarm in the home, at work and in public buildings. The closing date for nominations is Friday 22 July 2011. A panel of celebrity judges will decide upon the winners and runnersup from each category ahead of a star-studded national awards presentation night in London in October, sponsored by Specsavers Hearing Centres and Royal Canin.

Are we really heading for a new period of ‘visual austerity’? Or is this the age of the ‘artist as designer’ to which we will all have access? Some experts believe the big design trends of this year will originate from consumers reassessing what they need to live comfortably, seeking innovation, searching for more local products and seeking out more personalised items. The consumer market has been changed by recent economic adjustments and this means suppliers have to now match to their customer’s revised requirements and expectations. So where does that leave us as we enter the second half of 2011? The return of ash greys and blacks are set to make their mark, enlivened with splashes of yellows or orange this time rather than the red/grey combo of the eighties. The boundaries between art and design is being challenged by interior designers, which in turn may lead to everyday products at sensible prices being reflected in this; radical new designs that play with natural and even archeological forms . Already we have a fascinating array of surface textures in the home, from designer kitchen knives with integral moulded synthetic rubber grips to cookware made from the latest materials in ceramic technology. What is changing is the way in which these products will surface as solutions to home living more widely, being both stylish and practical. Soft natural materials such as wool and the prominent use of real wood also look set to become part of the forthcoming ‘visual vocabulary’ over the next year and beyond as the home is seen as a refuge against a perceived over-globalisation. But what does this mean in everyday terms for those who will be going out to purchase items to decorate and furnish their homes on the high street?

What to watch out for this year when you revamp your home: BRIGHT COLOURS: Colour is one of the biggest thing for 2011 Not just brights, but really bright brights - flashes of cerise pinks, fresh springy greens and fruity oranges in layers, textures and patterns. Freshen up your home on a budget But what about that budget you’ve just set yourself? Well just about any home can be improved on a budget. Kitchens are often considered to be the ‘most expensive room’ to refurbish but that need not be so. Consider the service of a kitchen supplier who will re-fit your kitchen with new doors and handles - a great way to revitalise that lost sparkle in the chefs room! Get your appliances looking virtually as new with a specialist cleaner who can get in all the nooks and crannies that you never seem to be able to. A new window blind - with a design that will really make the difference when are in during the evening and is effectively what you see out of your window. Bathrooms are instantly transformed by quite simple measures as replacing the flooring. This can be with one the latest designs using toughened vinyl which is both durable and warm to stand on. It doesn’t cost the earth either for a new pedestal and toilet seat - check out your local plumber’s merchant for an end of line bargain. This can give a sense of newness back to your bathroom, along with replacing bath seals and grout, or re-painting the ceiling. Don’t forget the walls - paint has never been so good having enjoyed decades of technological improvement and innovation. There are paint surfaces that once would have seemed like science fiction with effects that are apparent only on drying. Rooms that have been repainted can immediately feel like a different room, a nice way to cast off that ‘old room’ gloom! A neat solution is a fitted bedroom. With keen prices from fitters and suppliers it is possible to get that swish look and the storage spaced needed to declutter this room, leaving it looking calmer and much more inviting. Lighting in all rooms has been revolutionised in recent years by the steady influx of new high power leds. These devices allow for novel new designs which are trendy and practical - poseable housings which allow for light to be re-directed at will, changing the mood of the room. The extra benefit of these is the fact they use a very small fraction of a normal light - being even more efficient than the standard ‘energy saver’ bulb we have all got used to these days. The living room is the most obvious candidate for a makeover as it

is the one most used in everyday life. Here the opportunities abound to create a very different feel one that reflects how you feel now rather than when you last decorated it. Perhaps it is time to consider making life easier for yourself and moving to painted surfaces rather than patterned wallpaper. There are vast ranges of superb textured wall coverings which, when they become dulled over time, can be simply painted and repainted. If you need smoother walls to achieve this neater solution then consider having a plasterer neaten things up with a re-skim, this is a quick and cost effective way to modernise your room and when done will mean that even wallpaper will look much better, without those conspicuous bumps and lumps! Carpet cleaning - not a romantic subject but quite simply one of those things that can bring a real feeling of ‘newness’ back to the floor covering. Cleaning services often provide deals covering more than one room so why not take the opportunity to ‘Summer Clean’ if you didn’t bother back in the spring? More generally: Create a focal point. Each room should have a focal point which the rest of the room is centred around. It can be anything you like – a fireplace, a bed, a window. If a fireplace sounds too expensive, a simple piece of art can work just as well. co-ordinate. Make sure the accessories, fabric and colour scheme work together throughout the room. Consider what wallpaper can do - by wallpapering a single wall and painting the rest you can completely alter a room’s look.

Don’t be boring! Try a variety of textures – smooth, rough, shiny, matte a variety helps stop a room looking dull and boring. Rugs, glass tables and leather sofas with a mixture of cushions all go well together, and if you fancy a change of colour on your sofa why not use a throw? Another great idea is to buy some material you like and get a seamstress to make a custom fit cover - a much less expensive way to get a new look into your room than buying a brand new sofa or suite. Simplicity can be best - so avoid overcrowding a room with bits and bobs – it will only make it look smaller. Why not select a few key items and arrange them carefully – don’t place furniture where you risk wasting space. If it means you can only have one layout in the room because of a chimney breast, alcove etc then so be it - that will set the best use of space - let colour and accessories do the rest. So take a look at your home and if it doesn’t quite have that feeling you once had when you walked in after a hard day at work then maybe it’s time to get a bit of fresh colour and design into your life! BAGGING A BARGAIN Shoestring style conjures images of a home filled with other people's junk and a 'make do and mend' approach - in other words, worthy but dull. So it's a revelation to visit Alexandra Campbell's home which is not only elegant but oozes charm. "Nowadays there's real street cred in boasting about finding a bargain - the whole credit crunch has turned us off spending for the sake of it," she laughs.

"But I've been a fan for years because, limited by a tiny budget, I discovered it's actually not necessary to spend a fortune to have a stylish home." It features a host of desirable homes where reusing, revamping and recycling rule. "This approach isn't just great for saving cash, but you also end up with pieces which are unique to you, have a history and are redolent with personality," she points out. "I think too that's in tune with what people want for their homes today. A style bought 'off the peg' from one or two stores is boring and bland, but thrifty chic is so far from that." True to her word, a local carpenter constructed her kitchen table from discarded Victorian church pews, and kitchen utensils are hung from a piece of painted garden trellis. Instead of expensively refitting the kitchen, she's successfully revamped it by painting units in a trendy, chalky heritage colour to bring it fashionably up to date. She's even turned her grandmother's chintz curtains into a set of vintage cushions. Her only regret is allowing many of her mother's possessions to be sold in a house clearance sale. "Now I would have hung on to them, as I realise renovation and professional dry cleaning can work wonders." Alexandra believes people are beginning to revel in the freedom of expressing their individual style. "Not being able to furnish your home the way you want because of your budget forces you to look at things with a fresh eye. "Really, the only limit is your imagination, rather than your pocket!" Be inspired with a step-by-step guide to a style that makes being a home spendthrift look plain foolish.

THRIFTY WISDOM • Spend time scouting around, checking out prices and brands, so you're sure what you really want. "An empty living space often looks smarter than one that is over-crowded, so if you can't afford exactly what you want, leave a space for it for later," advises Alexandra. • Opt for simplicity and neutral colours when buying high priced items, because pieces will be more versatile and won't date. Also it will be easier to change or adapt their look with accessories. • Small details make rooms special, whether antique handles on cupboards, or individual flower blooms simply displayed in a collection of milk bottles. LIVING IN STYLE "Thrifty style is not a narrowly defined look," Alexandra says. "It can appeal as much to those who want a sharp contemporary edge to their home as to more traditionalist types. "It works brilliantly across a wide range of looks, classic, retro, country, modern and eclectic." THRIFTY TIPS: Remember that an old sofa can be transformed by new upholstery, although do make sure it's a traditionally made, fully sprung one that's worth the investment. Don't neglect the chain stores' affordable basics, just tailor them to your taste by painting or embellishing them.

Use books as decoration by arranging them by colour. Turn shelves into a statement by painting them a slightly darker shade than walls.
CHIC COLLECTIONS Think outside of the box - they don't have to consist of valuable antiques or ornaments but can be as simple as a set of pebbles collected on holidays, which are then hand painted with an appealing design. "Think carefully about how you arrange objects. One technique is to 'crowd it up' a well-tried antique dealer's trick to make things appear more valuable. So a collection of bottles will look better than one or two," suggests Alexandra. "Alternatively, take the 'less is more' approach and give objects space so that they look special and precious no matter what their price." THRIFTY TIPS: Turn old jewellery into a room accessory - hang necklaces on cupboard handles for a 'hippy chic' look. Look for the 'oddities' - a quirky collection of glass vases and different sized candlesticks will work well especially if you focus on one material, such as glass, wood, silver or china.

TURN ON THE DETAIL The most charming homes have interesting details that catch the eye, and give visual clues about their owner's personality. "A pretty window blind, distinctive cushions on the sofa or bed, or decorative items lining a windowsill add a dash of zest to rooms." THRIFTY TIPS: Transform a chest: Look for unusual knobs in homeware stores or when on your travels, and mix and match for even more effect. Chandeliers needn't break the bank. Buy a cheap one and paint it with metal paint to give it a fashionable, visual lift. Don't put up with a bad view from a window, instead use a pretty transfer and get more privacy as well. Save a fortune on art by using clip frames for children's masterpieces, and ring the changes regularly. Painting stairs to mimic a stair runner can be cheaper than carpet, but use hardwearing floor paint, or give the finished look a coat of varnish. Also, bear in mind it will be noisier.

Consider the balance in your house with the use of colours and light. Dark or north facing rooms need warmer, lighter colours to add more vibrancy to a room, which may feel dreary or stagnant. Use up-lighters in dark corners to open the space and large mirrors to reflect light into the room. In brighter or more vibrant rooms, tone down the intensity with cool colours or grounding earth colours like terracotta. Ensure that furniture is the appropriate size for the room and that surfaces have smooth lines and are free from clutter or too many objects. Pay attention to your artwork. Consider what the picture is saying and that it is of a positive nature. In many cases we have artwork that is linked to subconscious issues that are negative rather than positive. Creative artwork is good in a creative area like a study or art studio. Landscapes are better for calming and relaxing our mind and increasing our feeling of well-being. Many people are familiar with that sense of satisfaction of getting everything in your garden just as you want it, sitting back and then enjoying what you have created. But what if you wish to improve your ‘little bit of England’ but don’t have the the budget to indulge in some of the more exotic designs we see - sometimes on television shows - and which may not apply to you? Don’t worry - this is a realistic guide as to what you can achieve and some starting ideas to get you motivated to try!

There are, of course, many themes to create your garden around but the point is to stop and think before you rush out and buy anything! Consider using part of what you already have - even moving plants around can really change how you feel about the garden. Also, if you are having any hard landscaping done then you will be better served by having looked at some ideas and how they might fit in with your wishes when you start to plant out your trees, shrubs and flowers. The shape of your garden can greatly influence how you plan it - by using optical illusions to change the perceived appearance of a garden you can make a space seem either larger or more intimate, depending on your requirements. Scale is an important aspect of the garden design - use proportions which match your garden. Keep in mind the relationships between pot sizes if using large planters and garden furniture. By selecting cleverly you can really transform the way you perceive your garden space. Sometimes it can be counter intuitive, with a very small number of larger items in a small garden looking very comfortable within the setting rather than lots of small fiddly elements. The forms you choose create different effects in the garden along with texture, which can be used to put emphases on certain aspects of your layout. Rectilinear forms create a sense of order and proportion - useful in designs where a very contemporary feel is desired. Curved forms soften the appearance of the elements within the space, which is useful in creating a restful and emotionally soothing design. Don’t forget to balance your scheme, with one part of the composition having an equivalent mass to another part. This means not having a small part of the garden fighting for attention (and losing!). Also avoid a perfectly symmetrical approach to your design - unless you are aiming for a very formal garden.

Create unity by repeating patterns and plant materials. If you look around at garden ornaments try to bear in mind the shapes of the plants you have and the textures they create already in your garden. You can very often enhance an ornament you have already by ‘echoing’ it in an other item - sometimes of a different size. An example of this would be with spheres which you may then add to and set up an arrangement in your garden or patio area. Perhaps you have some nice large square pots but somehow they don’t ‘gel’ - again look at other square or even round elements you can introduce which may get them forming a visual rythmn. Colour can be used to subtly alter moods. Create an interesting and visually pleasing garden by using contrasting

colour ways such as blue/orange - they need not be ‘full on’ colours but muted versions of these. An easy way to try out what you like is to buy some inexpensive childrens poster paints and place various colour combinations together on a cheap artists pad to see how they look to your eyes. Then search for the nearest equivalent in either outdoor paints or in the items you add to your garden.

Meet Natalie Johnson the proud owner of The Pearly Whites Studio in the Japanese Water Gardens. “I’ve grown up locally in Sandiacre and from a young age always wanted to do something exciting and challenging. At 18, I decided to go to university and complete a degree in criminal law. As exciting as this was, I wanted more life experience and so applied to be a Special Constable for Nottinghamshire Police. This gave me some of the challenges and demands I strived for. On completion of my degree, I moved into drug rehabilitation and have been in this field for the past eighteen months. During this time I found myself exploring other interests in the area of cosmetics and beauty. I soon became a fully qualified and competent nail technician and teeth whitening technician. My inspiration for setting up a professional studio came from my partner Tom. He gave me the encouragement I needed to take on such a challenge. VOLUNTARY ACTION BROXTOWE Could you be a mentor to a carer? A carer is someone who provides emotional, practical or personal care....often all three.... for a family member. Carers can become isolated and may be affected by the stress and pressure of their caring roles. The Carers Federation is looking for open-minded and caring volunteers who can be trained as mentors to support carers. Being able to listen and communicate effectively, help to build confidence and motivate others are important parts of the mentor role. Could you spare a few hours each week or so to support a carer? The role of a mentor is to provide emotional and practical support and advice for carers. The one-to-one relationship with a mentor will enable a carer to have a safe and confidential space to talk about their feelings and concerns, develop self esteem and help them to become involved in new things such as education and training, employment or simply leisure and social activities. Volunteer mentors do not need any specific experience or qualifications. There is a comprehensive training programme, on going support, and the opportunity for personal and professional development. BROXTOWE COMMUNITY CELEBRATION - A DAY TO CELEBRATE DIFFERENT CULTURES IN BROXTOWE. This free event for all ages will take place on Saturday 2 July, 11am – 4pm at Roundhill Primary School, Foster Avenue, Beeston. The event starts with the Chinese Lion dance in Beeston Square which will then accompany the crowd to the event. Throughout the day, there will be performances from local schools and community groups, a kwik cricket tournament, interactive information stalls from local organisations, crafts, music and dance workshops from around the world. There is also free food tasting with an international flavour. JB Tennis is offering two new tennis coaching sessions starting in June. These will run weekly at the Queen Elizabeth Park Courts, Stapleford Lane, next to Fairfield Junior School. The first session will be on Saturdays from 10am to 11am, for 8 -10 year old beginners, followed by a group for 13-15 year olds who can already play and may have had some coaching. There are also places for 6 and 7 year olds in a Mini Tennis Red group on Tuesdays at 3.50pm. JB Tennis was established in 2002 by Licensed LTA Professional Jan Burnett. Jan has successfully provided tennis coaching to players in the area for over seventeen years through links with Broxtowe Borough Council and other local venues. “This new enterprise at QEP brings tennis directly to youngsters in this area. If it becomes successful, I hope to continue through this year.”

With the summer holidays approaching, some couples with problems are already dreading the added stress and pressure that the school holidays entail. They may be fearful of getting drawn into bitter and hostile separation proceedings if they involve solicitors for advice over the separation. However it is possible to separate or divorce in a more civilised way. Ellis-Fermor & Negus have trained Collaborative solicitors who assist couples with separation in a more amicable way. Separation and/or divorce can have a huge effect on children involved. Studies show that if children are exposed to parental conflict, through divorce or separation they are exposed to future risks of suffering depression themselves, difficulty forming their own relationships, self blame and even drug and alcohol experimentation. However divorcing or separating parents who co-operate in the process do better for themselves and their children, in financial, legal and emotional terms. In the “normal� adversarial system a couple would both have separate solicitors and if agreement on issues cannot be reached by negotiations through letter and telephone, court proceedings may be started. However this approach is ill- suited to help families reduce conflict. A minority of cases need help from the family courts, but most family cases are better handled with co-operation, and consideration of the needs of the family. A couple may opt for mediation or Collaborative Law. Collaborative Law was first developed in the 1990s in the USA, but has now become an international approach and one that leaves the couple in control of the process, rather than to the mercy of the court system. One crucial aspect of Collaborative Law is that the parties agree from the outset that they will not drag each other through the courts. Such an approach leads to better relationships between ex-spouses, is better for the children involved and is usually a faster and cheaper way of resolving issues. It can be used for any family related issues, including financial matters and arrangements for the children. Usually 3-4 meetings are held to resolve all the issues. The couple will work through all issues in these meetings, with both their solicitors present, guiding and advising them. Many people feel that it is a way to divorce or separate with dignity and integrity. Ellis-Fermor & Negus have two fully trained Collaborative lawyers. Feedback from many couples who have chosen this approach is that it takes the acrimony out of difficult situations and enables people to deal with issues in a more civilised and dignified way. Divorcing or separating couples are often not aware of all their options. Whether your assets are large or small, and where the divorce or separation involves children so that future co-parenting is important, the Collaborative Law approach is one that should be considered first of all.
