NOW YOU CAN LOOK AND FEEL EXCEPTIONAL “It’s a delight when we see the outstanding results that our clients achieve with Strawberry Lipo and Endermology” explains salon owner Cailee Byron. Many have tried lotions, potions, diets, working out in the gym and the like – all to little or no avail, but Cailee has seen clients’ faces light up with the results they’ve achieved with this new treatment and comments:“It really does warm our hearts.” Clients can help regain their self-esteem with these treatments as many people find the the effects of cellulite, sagging jowls,‘bingo wings’, bulging tummies, poorly defined bottoms or enlarged thighs can have a dramatic effect on how they feel about themselves. Lowering self-esteem and, sometimes, self-worth. That’s what Cailee finds so great – “seeing the self esteem pour back into peoples’ lives”. “After each treatment you can actually see peoples’ self confidence being regained as their skin tightens, as their tummies reduce in size. It is almost, as their cellulite melts away, their self-confidence just soars. That can be so rewarding”. she adds. Strawberry Lipo and Endermology treatments are at the very cutting edge of technology. It is truly amazing what these machines can achieve. All whilst the client is lying down, relaxing, as the treatment gently works its magic. It’s simple and painless. Cailee isn’t one to give treatments that she wouldn’t have herself. “I regularly have Strawberry Lipo and Endermology sessions” she enthuses. Clients are not alone in recognising the benefits of this treatment - it’s a regime that is believed to be shared with many well known celebrities such as Coleen Rooney, Claudia Shiffer and Elle Macpherson. “Strawberry Lipo can be just so effective in particular” Cailee continues. This is a view shared by many in the international press - with rave reviews, Suzi Dixon

writing in the Telegraph Newspaper about the treatment with favourable results for her. “You are in safe hands with guaranteed results” Cailee explains. “All my staff are highly trained both in using the machines and in the help & advice they offer. This can really put you at ease. Plus, we can actually offer a guarantee behind the treatments that we offer.” Try before you buy with a superb offer at Cailees:“I realise that some people can be suspicious of the claims CAILEE BYRON - OWNER OF CAILEE HAIR & BEAUTY we make. This is why I’d like to extend my own personal invitation for people to try either the Strawberry Lipo or Endermology treatments for just £35 – a real fraction of the cost. I would urge anyone to just give it a go.The results you’ll be able see are just outstanding. The results you’ll feel are even better! Plus membership packages are available to help you stay as the new you forever!” Booking couldn’t be easier, just call (0115) 946 1994 and Cailees will do the rest.

l a e p p a e z e e br Babbington Rescue CIC was first establish in February 1993, catering for stray and abandoned dogs. Breeze finds out more... They have a none destruction policy and now deal with almost 1000 dogs a year, this represents almost 1% of the total UK stray and abandoned dogs annually. Since the rescue changed hands in late 2003, they have found homes for nearly 3500 dogs, who, through no fault of their own, have come into care. They are continually looking to re-home their dogs and invite you to enquire about the animals they have in their care, all looking for someone to offer the love and attention they crave for. “We hope you will find the time to look through our website knowing there is a dog waiting for you”. Babbington Rescue CIC are a non profit organisation, all the profits go straight to their dogs to pay for Vaccinations, any operations needed, to help spay/neuter, microchip, feed, heating, water, bedding, staff etc etc. Employees at the Babbington Hall Rescue Centre are appealing for donations after a 12-week old puppy suffering from an eye condition was found abandoned on a busy road in Watnall last week. Broxtowe Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Wardens were called after the cross Mastiff puppy was found scared and covered in dirt at the side of a high-speed country road by a passing motorist. The puppy – named ‘Benny’ after the motorist who found him – suffers from an eye condition known as Cherry Eye that will require an operation costing up to £400 to rectify. The condition may be the reason why he was abandoned by his owner. Benny is currently being looked after by employees at the Babbington Hall Rescue Centre in Awsworth who are looking to raise funds for his operation before he can be adopted into a new loving home. If you’re interested in adopting a rescue dog or think you can help towards the cost of Benny’s operation, please contact Babbington Rescue Centre on 0115 932 4576 or visit www.babbington-rescue.org.uk Alternatively, please send your donations to help Benny to the Babbington Rescue Centre in Westby Lane, Awsworth, Nottingham, NG16 2SS.

Dental Health Month - Bad Breath isn’t normal, even for pets! From now until Easter is ‘Dental Health Month’ at Churchcroft Veterinary Centre. They’re aiming to improve the health of our pets’ mouths. Apparently, most pets over the age of two years old have significant dental disease! As George, the senior vet at Churchcroft says,“Dental disease is painful and can cause anything from an ache to intense discomfort. It also compromises health by causing bacteria to invade the rest of the body. Bacteria from the mouth in association with dental disease have been shown to cause infections that can lead on to kidney failure and in other cases can cause heart disease and liver disease. It’s these bacteria that cause the horrible smelly breath some pets have.” To encourage owners to appreciate the importance of good oral health care, Churchcroft are offering Veterinary tooth checks free of charge throughout March. They will have also have an informative dental display and tooth care goodies for all patients as well as talking through any tooth problems found. In addition, for any pets who need dental attention Churchcroft are also offering a full 33% off all dentistry and dentistry associated costs right up until Easter. Give them a call on 0115 922 4855 and arrange a tooth check ASAP to get fresh breath and a happy pet.

depressed, and have higher selfesteem than those who don't.

How will you be treating your mum on Mothering Sunday?... One urban myth states that the Chinese symbol for trouble is two women underneath a single roof. Although this is almost certainly not true, we can all understand the sentiment. A mother is the one person a daughter can simultaneously abhor and adore. But Deborah Tannen, author of You're Wearing That? Understanding Mothers and Daughters In Conversation, says that this unique and powerful

bond doesn't occur between a mother and her son. "Mothers and daughters are brought face to face with reflections of themselves, and that forces them to confront who they are, who they want to be and how they relate to others," she explains. The resulting relationship therefore resembles "an intense love affair", she explains, veering between passion and pain". It should come as no surprise then that this relationship so often runs into problems. As daughters and mothers around the UK get ready for Mother's Day now is a good time to set things back on track. Research has shown that adult women who get on with their mothers are less anxious and

THE APPROVAL SEEKER The mother-daughter relationship provides the child with her first experience of feeling secure in the world, says family counsellor Stephanie Palin of Relate - and that's often the root of the problem. As a daughter grows up she wants to continue to please this person who provides this support. However, as Palin explains, this can turn many girls into approval seekers who end up making the wrong decisions, all because they want to please Mummy. Although a mother may see her supportive role as benign, the pressure exerted on the daughter can be very intense, and lead to situations where the daughter feels 'she can't anything right'. "I remember coming home with my first senior school report with a 99% on my maths, and my mother said to me, 'What happened to the other 1%?'," says Palin. "It was never, 'Well aren't you clever' or, 'Good job, well done'. I quickly learnt that if she said, 'How did your friend do?', the subtle message was that I could have done better." This so-called 'tough love' approach can explain the reason why many mothers and daughters seem to have such differing views over their bond.

REPAIRING PAST INJUSTICES As mums and daughters age, the mother's role moves from from actively caring for her child to one of quiet observance. Some mums can feel rejected, Palin says, by the fact that their baby daughter's growing up.They lose their sense of self as the mother and can consequently find it hard to treat their daughter as an equal. And while we little girls might want a fairytale world where mum is perfect and always says the right thing, it's time that daughters woke up to reality, she adds. "Your mother is a flawed human being, just as you and your friends are flawed. "You put up with your friends' flaws because, 'Oh God, that's just how Jane is' - but you don't give that leeway to your mum. Understanding why she does things the way she does, and that she did the best she could despite her flaws, is essential to you having a healthy relationship with her." "In many families, Dad helps calm down the tension between mother and child and soothes things over. He can play a pretty important role." Understanding that your mother doesn't mean to hurt you can actually transform your relationship, says Tannen. So it's worth remembering that next time the two of you are under the same roof.

World Owl Trust launches fund-raising campaign for Barn Owl nest boxes, Breeze finds out more...

l a e p p a e z e e br

The Word Owl Trust, which is based at Muncaster Castle in the Lake District, has launched a campaign to fund the building of 100 new nest boxes for one of Britain’s most beautiful birds. Barn Owl numbers have been in decline over recent years mainly due to the loss of traditional roost and nesting sites and suitable habitat areas. There are now only between 3,000 and 6,000 breeding pairs in the UK and approximately 70% of those rely on nest boxes to breed successfully. To raise funds for the new nest boxes, staff and volunteers from the World Owl Trust are undertaking a gruelling 25 km sponsored walk in the Alicante Mountains in Southern Spain. The walk involves climbing five peaks with a total 1570 metres of ascent. The trip will be funded entirely by the participants and Brian Fagg, a director of Mountain Walks in Spain. Wulf Ingham, from the World Owl Trust, who will be taking part in the sponsored walk, says: “Barn Owls are incredibly beautiful. Seeing a ‘white ghost’ flying across a meadow is an unforgettable experience. “At the World Owl Trust we want to do everything that we possibly can to protect and conserve this wonderful bird. “The walk will be very hard work, but it will certainly be worth all the effort if we manage to raise the money we need for our nest boxes.” Nest boxes need to be replaced every four to five years and each one costs approximately £50.The World Owl Trust wants to put up the nest boxes in places with species rich grassland which is ideal habitat for voles - the Barn Owl’s main source of food. The World Owl Trust is the world’s premier owl conservation organisation and for more than 30 years has worked to ensure the survival of endangered owls from all over the world. The Trust also operates a wildlife rehabilitation unit where injured birds and animals are cared for until they are well enough to return to the wild. The World Owl Centre, at Muncaster, is home to over 200 owls from around 50 different species and sub-species. They range from the biggest owl in the world - the European Eagle Owl to the tiny Pygmy and Scops Owls. The World Owl Trust is a charity and relies on public donations for much of it’s work. You can find more information on the World Owl Trust at www.owls.org. To find out about Muncaster go to www.muncaster.co.uk. WORLD OWL TRUST ANNUAL SPONSORED WALK 2011 The World Owl Trust receives no public funding and relies on owl adoptions, membership and private donations to support its continuing efforts to protect and conserve the UK Barn Owl population. The 8 walkers, including volunteers Roy, Debs, Deb and Colin pictured above, will aim to raise £5,000 to raise money to build 100 new Barn Owl nest boxes throughout the UK. Nest boxes need to be replaced every 4-5 years and each costs approximately £50. Each walker will be paying all their own travel and accommodation expenses. Therefore every penny raised will go directly to the Trust. “If we do not continue to support the work of the World Owl Trust then the only owls we will see in the wild will be representations, like the one pictured above”. More information on the work of the Trust can be found at www.owls.org. Details of the walk and how to donate can be found at www.justgiving.com/royanddebs-smith/

Beeston Camera Club provided Breeze with its very first cover in 2002. We find out whats been happening since as they celebrate their 50 years of success...

n o t i k r u o y get

50 YEARS OF CAPTURING THE IMAGINATION When Beeston Camera Club member Godfrey Price won the Best Creative category in this year’s Annual Exhibition at Beeston Library, it brought back memories. That’s because Beeston Library is where the camera club started, and Godfrey, 80, was one of the founder members after responding to an advertisement by local sweet shop owner George Whiteman in 1954. Godfrey joined with Harold Smith, father of Sir Paul Smith, the acclaimed Nottingham designer. It seems that creativity runs in the family, as Harold was a regular winner of Club competitions, along with Eric Moore. Godfrey’s wife Eunice is also a long-standing member of Beeston Camera Club. She says:“The Club hasn’t altered much but photography has changed dramatically. In the old days, we could only work in black and white, although we did occasionally add colour by hand. Godfrey did all his own processing and built a dark room outside the house. With colour and digital photography, we have a lot more scope now and it’s less time consuming.” Another advantage of digital is that taking pictures is relatively cheap and as Godfrey and Eunice point out, you don’t have to go far for an interesting photograph. They list Attenborough Nature Reserve, Wollaton Park, Highfields and the buildings in the city centre as good local starting points. Godfrey adds:“I love getting out and about with my cameras. We’re always on the look-out for a good photograph and you always have to be ready. I like candid photographs, so as soon as you see your shot, you have to be there to capture the moment, or the moment is gone. “Photographs are also useful historical records. Over the years I’ve taken photographs of buildings in Beeston before they’ve been altered or demolished and one of my favourite pictures is the last train leaving Victoria Station before it closed.” Such is his contribution to the group, Beeston Camera Club has made Godfrey the Honorary Vice President. He’s proud that the Club he joined over 50 years ago has gone on to be one of Nottingham’s great success stories. Now based at the British Legion building on Hall Croft, the Club has received several national awards over the years. Among its 75 members are the Vice President and Exhibition Secretary of the North and East Midlands Photographic Federation (NEMPF) as well as its President, David Gibbins, who is a nationally acclaimed judge. The Club also includes Beeston professional photographer Alan Thompson, winner of several Photographer of the Year awards in the Portraits, Weddings and Commercial categories. Professionals from the industry and national/international award winning photographers include Beeston Camera Club on their lecture circuit. The age range spans from 17 to over 80, but no matter how experienced you are, there’s always something to learn, which is why the Club is now running workshops on some Tuesdays (on matters such as Photoshop and lighting) in addition to the regular Club meetings on Thursdays. For more details visit www.beestoncameraclub.co.uk. Beeston Camera Club’s annual exhibition is at Beeston Library from 1st-31st March 2011 during the library’s opening times.

Serious issues and serious help Issues relating to our mental health and well being should be taken seriously and dealt with as a matter of the highest importance. Although we know that we should deal with such issues too often we put off seeking any help. There may be many reasons for this but the fact is that by not getting help we simply make our lives and the lives of so many around us poor and unfulfilling. It is vital to avoid laying blame on a person or their family, friends or work colleagues for not seeking help. By not doing anything the chances of things getting better are slim. Procrastinating will do little to help either and it is important to understand that the longer things go on the more likely they are to get worse. Things can be done to make things better, even if you have tried before without success. Issues around mental health should be considered serious and not put to one side with a misguided idea that it will get better if we just pull ourselves together. Local therapist, Martin Smith PhD, has been running a successful private practice since 2000. He believes it is never too early or too late to get help and guidance which can change your life. If you would like more information on what he can do to help, contact him on 07 973 410 010 or email itctherapy@aol.com Martin is available at times to suit and appointments can often be made in just a few days and done evenings and weekends.

gardening

Believe it or not, the degradation of our natural landscape has now reached the point where gardens are considered very important refuges for wildlife of all types. Therefore, the thoughtful gardener really can make a big difference in the fight to preserve our wildlife. To maximise this effort you can turn your whole garden into a wildlife refuge providing all the proper habitats and plants to sustain a mini-ecosystem.This is the perfect answer if you are a relatively lazy gardener too, because most wildlife likes to be left alone. However, even if you garden actively, there are a few simple things you can do to help support our native fauna. So here are a few thoughts for you over the coming months. Be lazy and avoid mowing by creating a wildflower meadow. The best way is to sow wildflower seed in seed trays that

breezemagazine 34

have little compartments and when the plants are a good size, these ‘plugs’ can be planted directly into the lawn. Carefully managed, you should be down to a couple of cuts a year, and as well as providing good food for a host of bugs, you will get a glorious flowering display. Think about what you are planting. Certain plants have a huge wildlife benefit. Everybody knows butterflies adore buddleia, but the caterpillars of the red admiral love nettles. Equally, many native trees and shrubs provide safety for an enormous number of species including birds, insects and mammals - the oak is home to over two hundred. They find protection, eat one another, devour bits of the plant, but all depend on it in one way or another. Bird boxes are another thought, but must be positioned out of the reach of cats. Another splendid wildlife haven is a pond or pool. This should be as large as possible and vary in depth, with a minimum of 60cm at its deepest point. If properly looked after, a pool can become home to a whole range of plants, insects, fish and amphibians such as toads and frogs. The latter are both wonderful

natural predators of slugs, but don’t forget to give them a means of getting out of the pool. Another tip to save you some work and be eco-friendly is to leave a remote corner of the garden untended as a refuge habitat. Finally, just have a think about what you put on your garden. Maybe try biological controls and organic remedies before toxic pesticide chemicals. And remember homemade compost is so much better than the ones you can buy.

Plant of the month: Clematis Armandii This clematis is a native of China and was first introduced into Britain in 1900, by the famous and very successful plant hunter Ernest Wilson. This strongly growing, evergreen climber will spread into an amazing flourish that will brighten up any garden. To see the creamy white blossoms (which are 5-7cm across) set off against the glossy deep green of its long (12cm), leathery lance-shaped leaves is one of the true joys of Spring. The flowers come out in clusters in mid to late Spring (although as with much else this year it is flowering early) and the plant prefers a sheltered, warm and sunny position. It will require protection in the severest of winters, but otherwise just let it romp away. If required, pruning should be done after flowering.

“Serendipity is a wonderful thing and sometimes, we don’t really know what exactly we need until we happen to chance upon the very thing! Having moved from my home in Wiltshire where I had a busy practice, I found myself having to re-establish a brand new patient base. Experience meant that I already knew that advertising had to work for me so I was seeking a means of focussing on specific catchment areas and reaching people who might benefit from the services of a Foot Health Professional whose charges are deliberately capped to remain affordable to all those in need whatever their age or circumstances. Therefore, when thumbing through a copy of Breeze Magazine I was first impressed by basics necessities: Quality glossy paper, vibrant colours, coverage of local areas, interesting features and a wealth of useful contacts for a wide range of services and products. These days, I use Breeze Magazine exclusively for advertising because I believe it to be an excellent source of reference. Also, the staff, all of whom are efficient, friendly professionals know their market and invariably produce a quality monthly magazine. For me personally, I can honestly say that 95% of business has come from patients who tell me ‘I saw you in Breeze.’ My aim is to provide an effective, affordable service for all. My surgery on Nottingham Road in Stapleford allows for patients to be treated in clinical yet friendly surroundings but we also provide home visits for those less ambulant who are unable to travel. Look out for the April edition of Breeze Magazine for news of another service that will soon be coming your way. This involves ground breaking, well researched information that may well offer life changing opportunity! ARIES [March 21st-April 20th] Team effort becomes vital in making something work out for you and your partner long term. By keeping your cards close to your chest a certain selfsatisfaction takes over with an understanding of how much more in control of your life you have become. Unexpected events bring a positive reaction with unexpected invitations.

CANCER [June 22nd-July 23rd] Learning new skills and becoming interested in subjects you never thought possible opens up a new and exciting world. Being drawn into someone else’s arguments does not go down well and by making this clear to those involved you walk away leaving them to sort their own problems out. Plans for a well-earned break is not too far away.

TAURUS [April 21ST-May 20th] Any misunderstandings regarding matters of the heart are soon sorted bringing to a close any feelings of insecurities. Time out gives you that space needed mid-month. Doing things your way becomes difficult when dealing with something you are not familiar with. After all the hard work celebrations get under way with those close.

LEO [July 24th-August 23rd] Sometimes you feel doing your best isn’t always good enough. However, once minor obstacles have been removed you begin to feel more yourself and in control. Any extra travelling could well prove beneficial with a view of financial gain. Being supportive when necessary is given at the right moment. Wined and dined enjoyed.

GEMINI [May 21st-June 21st] With a busy and fulfilling month ahead you put plans into action allowing you and others close enjoy certain celebrations. Having to make a quick decision becomes easier with the support of a younger member of the family. Taking up new and interesting hobbies provides you with a source of an outlet when under pressure.

VIRGO [August 24th-Sept 23rd] Meeting up with those you haven’t seen for some time brings invitations your way. Time spent alone is valued when after the first week a hectic schedule is kept. Ideas for the future become clearer and learning new skills seems vital when wishing to keep a certain amount of independence. You enjoy catching up with family or friends.

Not going back to how things were you make sure only those close to you benefit from all your hard work. The mislaying of keys becomes very frustrating.

CAPRICORN [Dec 23rd-Jan 20th] Whatever decisions you make early in March you stick by them. Any limitations are accepted temporarily. Planning and making things happen for you and your family well into the month becomes enjoyable. Meeting up with family highlights one weekend. Good news comes your way regarding future gains. Feet up end of month.

SCORPIO [Oct 23rd-Nov22nd] Taking on extra responsibility brings added pressure but after the first week March becomes much easier to manage. Supervising and regenerating your positive energy helps others to move forward in the right direction for them. Listening and observing helps you make a decision regarding an acquaintance. Romantic evenings enjoyed.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21st-Feb 19th] An extraordinary month where you succeed in achieving your goals for March. Ideas for the home are put on hold until all agree on a suitable time. Standing firm on one-decision helps another see sense. Promises are met when least expected bringing a smile all round. Younger members of the family help out just at the right moment.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23rd-Dec22nd] Busy with the welfare of another you hardly have a moment to spare. Pleased also for someone close when decisions are made for them bringing to an end any uncertainty. Busy and trying to get organised you manage to secure a place and time where you excel in making things work for others. A mini break of some kind is welcomed.

PISCES [Feb 20th-March 20th] Frustrated with the same situation you make decisions, which eleviate any pressure felt. Visiting places and people long distant is on the cards. A change of scenery does the trick and your ready to face the world with much more positive energy around you. Feeling good about yourself you embark on a journey where memories are held.

The Nottingham Centre is a friendly social organisation affiliated to National Trust. Members enjoy a varied programme of talks throughout the winter, and outings during the summer months. Recent topics have ranged from some gory anecdotes from Aly Greenway in her description of life as an Environmental Officer: a nostalgic look at newspaper advertisements of yesteryear: and an enlightening evening with George Wilkinson, looking at ‘Georgian Houses Great and Small.’ In April the winter programme draws to a close with a talk by Beth Dawson of National Trust on new developments at Clumber Park. The talk will be preceded by a very brief Annual General Meeting. Finally, on April 14th, Tony Williams’ topic will be ‘Pacific Panorama,’ covering Australia, Canada, Fiji, and New Zealand. The Centre’s summer programme began early with a tour of Birmingham Botanical Gardens and a visit to Hagley Hall. In June there will be a trip to Stratford on Avon which includes a tour of the Lord Leycester Hospital, a medieval charitable institution for ‘the housing and maintenance of the needy, infirm or aged.’ Nottingham Centre members need not apply! Among other excursions planned are trips to Calke Abbey in July, and Hanbury Hall in August, with river cruise and cream tea. There are also two great holidays on offer: a week in Hampshire in June, and a trip to Newcastle in October. The Centre’s activities also include a Walking Group, a Local History Group, and a Gardens Group. The annual subscription to the Nottingham Centre is £5.00 (£4.00 for another member at the same address) but you must be a member of National Trust to join.Guests are always welcome: the charge at meetings is £3.00 for guests, £2.00 for members. However, summer outings get booked up very rapidly and priority is given to Centre members.
