breeze fashion Form an orderly queue, ladies. Colour blocking has been the daddy of all trends for several seasons now.
By Maddy McIndoe
Collaborations between high-end designers and high-street brands are nothing new. In fact, we barely even bat an eyelid anymore, at the throngs of fans camping outside stores at 5am to get the first look-in. Versace for H &M was perhaps the most hypedup collection yet, but, we have to ask ourselves, do they live up to the media attention they receive? Luckily for you, we have done all the legwork to find the best pieces from the cream of the collaboration crop this year. When it comes to paying a premium price for what is, essentially, a high-street manufactured piece, versatility is key. This Vanessa Bruno for La Redoute shirtdress has it all- a flattering fit and the perfect mix of laidback cool and sexy, due to the slouchy shape and sheer chiffon fabric. Wedges, lipstick and a leather jacket would transform it from a daytime dress to a vamped-up party outfit in one fell swoop. People Tree, the fair trade fashion pioneer, has teamed up with both Zakee Shariff and Orla Kiely this season. Both offerings are characterised by each designers’ signature prints. Zakee Shariff’s designs feature delicate, illustrative prints with a smattering of paisley whilst Orlia Kiely’s features bolder designs. Celebrity collaborations are often even more anticipated than the high-end designers (who could forget Kate Moss for Topshop?) Geri Halliwell by Next is surprisingly well thought-out: structured pieces in solid colours and girlie floral print produce a mix of grown-up chic and fun. From March also is a selection inspired by that Union Jack minidress, albeit not so tight and with a longer hemline. The limited edition nature of these collaborations means that unfortunately it can be very difficult to get hold of even the less popular items, let alone the key pieces. For this reason, it is advisable to check with stores to find out when they receive delivery of the items. It may sound extreme, but will avoid disappointment. The plus side is knowing you have paid a fraction of the usual price for your favourite designer!

property matters Q: My tenant is causing a nuisance in the neighbourhood by having loud parties on a regular basis. I am receiving complaints from his neighbours demanding I do something about it, but what can I do?
Welcome to our new regular feature where Julian Divine, Director of Whitegates Estate Agents answers your questions regarding buying, selling or letting property. A: This is a most unpleasant issue for all concerned and it is important to remember that only the relevant authorities have any real power in such instances. The neighbours should be advised to report their concerns directly to the anti-social behaviour unit of the local authority who will then be able to advise them on how to gather evidence in the correct manner for further action to be taken by the authority and/or the police. You should also politely advise your tenant that complaints have been made and the activities need to cease or further action may be taken to remove them from the property.
gives the tenant the necessary prescribed information and notice period to implement the increase. The form, which is a legal necessity, advises the tenant on what his/her rights are and what they must do. It is not acceptable simply to write to the tenant and ask for more rent, it needs to be done formally for it to be a valid increase. Q: I served my tenant a months notice to leave and he is refusing to go. Do you have any advice on what I can do to resolve the situation?
Q: I have been letting a house to the same tenant for 5 years now and I wish to increase the rent slightly. How much notice do I have to give the tenant?
A: A landlord must always serve at least 2 months notice, in the form a Section 21 notice when asking a tenant to vacate. As this hasn’t been done, the notice you gave is invalid and the correct notice now needs to be served. If, after the expiration of the new notice, the tenant still refuses to leave then you would need to begin an accelerated possession claim through the county court – a solicitor can help you with this and so can Whitegates if you contact us on 0115 922 2222.
A: I am assuming your tenant is now on a statutory periodic tenancy and if so then you need to serve a Section 13 notice which

breeze get your kit on Recently a team of well-trained athletes from 1360 (Stapleford and Sandiacre) Squadron woke up early and raring to go. They began the morning by travelling down to RAF Wittering (Peterborough) where they took part in the Cross Country Competition. The cadets were up against others from different squadrons around the Wing so the pressure was on. Cadets were split into their age categories which consisted of junior boys and girls, senior boys and girls and Youths. The cross country distance that all cadets ran was 3.5 miles and the squadron had some very impressive results from certain runners in the team these were Cadet Flight Sergeant Osbiston (17) from the youth’s category who placed a credible 3rd along with Cadet Joel Terry (15) who came sprinting behind in 4th place. Corporal Shannon Conway (14) was the squadron’s fastest girl coming 3rd in the Junior Girls category. These three successful runners have made it into the Regional Competition which will be taking place in the next month. “We wish them the best of luck”! With all the running over all squadrons formed up ready for the overall scores to be announced, it
was great to hear that 1360 Squadron came 2nd in the junior girl’s category out of 29 competing Squadrons that day. Flight Sergeant Osbiston said “I really enjoy cross country as my strong sport is running, I’m proud of all the cadets that took part that day as they put all their best efforts in. I’m now looking forward to competing in the Regional competition.” Flight Lieutenant Gareth Fowler, Officer Commanding 1360 Sqn, said: “I am so proud of all the cadets that ran on the day, they put in a huge effort. The Unit is growing week by week; I am looking forward to the future and 1360 becoming a force to be reckoned with” Further information available from: Flight Lieutenant Gareth Fowler Tel: 07804 593 455 Email: oc.1360@aircadets.org

Nottingham & Derby Hot Air Balloon Club was started by a group of enthusiasts in 1978 and has been a regular sight around Notts and Derbys for 34 years. They are looking for new members, how about you? The club is believed to be unique in the UK as the only balloon club with membership open to the general public. Members get a chance to get involved in all aspects of flying balloons. We organise regular training evenings and a number of other social events. The club is a non-proft making sports club and run by volunteers. We own two complete balloons and mainly fly locally - although in previous years members have taken a balloon over to balloon meets in the USA, India, France and even Australia. In 2005 we flew our balloon across the English Channel. In July 2011 we attended a meet at Chambley in France and helped set a new world record for the largest simultaneous launch of hot air balloons. “We sometimes get asked to inflate our balloons at local shows and fetes and also at wedding receptions”. Positive changes in store for Stagecoach Beeston! Stagecoach Beeston has been providing quality part-time training in singing, dancing and acting for almost ten years. As part of the longest running and most successful children’s performing arts schools network in the world, Stagecoach Beeston is more than just a stage school, theatre school or drama school. The staff at the school are proud to offer a full and rounded education, teaching life skills to build confidence and stretch imaginations through singing, acting and dance classes. The school was set up from scratch by Christine Nicklin in April 2003. She has now stepped down to concentrate on other commitments, and has passed the reins over to her step-daughter, Debbie Pickard. A parent of a six year old boy, Debbie brings to the school fresh enthusiasm and ideas for an exciting future. “I have already arranged a live radio broadcast for the 2nd March this year for the whole school to participate in. I am looking forward to seeing the school work together to put a broadcast together that their parents can tune into live online, as well as listen to time and time again. My son attends the school in Stage 1 and he is immensely excited about the forthcoming radio workshop!” says Debbie. In addition to the above, Debbie will also be holding 10th birthday celebrations for the school at the end of the Spring term, when the students will have fun doing an X-Factor/Britain’s Got Talent style talent show. There may even be a birthday cake and a bit of Gangnam Style! In July of this year, the whole school will be performing “The Rocky Horror Show” live on stage at the Royal Concert Hall for charity. This is a really exciting time to be joining Stagecoach Beeston. Students (new and old) are welcome to come along and try the school out for size! You will be made to feel welcome the moment you walk in the door. For further information on the school, please visit: www.stagecoach.co.uk/beeston

Dagfa Pupil Goes Back to School! A former fashion and textile designer has returned to her old school in Nottingham to retrain in a new profession. Andrea Finden is being given vital training towards gaining a teaching qualification by Dagfa School, an independent co-educational school for children aged 3-16 in Beeston. Despite leaving the school as a pupil over 20 years ago, Andrea is now back in the classroom at Dagfa as a teaching support assistant as part of her training to become a fully qualified primary teacher. Andrea, who is from Wollaton, left Dagfa School in the 1980s to study fashion and textiles at Clarendon College in Nottingham. She went on to enjoy a career in fashion design and sales at Courtaulds Clothing, Charnos and Coats Vyella. But, a couple of years ago, and now with two children of her own, she decided she wanted a change in direction. Realising that teaching was her calling, she enrolled for a degree in education at Nottingham Trent University. Needing to get a first foot on the career ladder, she called her old school to ask head teacher Jane Le Poidevin for some advice. After some discussion, it was agreed that Andrea should join the school as an apprentice. Having completed a Cache level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, she was offered a position as a teaching support assistant. Ms Jane Le Poidevin said: “I was delighted to be able offer Andrea her first role in teaching here at Dagfa. She brings a great deal of experience with her and embodies the ethos of our school. I am sure she will go on to have a great, second career and influence many young lives.” Andrea remembers her school days fondly. “Dagfa was a close, supportive, family environment which gave all of us lots of confidence and encouragement to achieve whatever we wanted. I particularly liked maths, art and sport and it is good to see the same values holding true at the school now all these years later.”

Action for Children and a team from Karnival, Europe’s largest student RAG team from Nottingham University, will take the captives by limousine to Nottingham’s renowned Castle, where they will be held in the impressive Nemi Room. Armed with just a mobile phone, laptop and list of contacts, colleagues and friends, the captives’ challenge will be to secure their release by raising at least £1,000 for Action for Children’s work. The event runs from 10.30am-3.00pm and includes a buffet lunch. Andrew Legge, Action for Children’s East Midlands Fundraiser, said: “Captured at Nottingham Castle is set to be a fantastic day and we would love to hear from more people interested in taking part. It’s a chance for local businesses and others from the community to raise vital funds for vulnerable children and young people, while networking in an atmospheric historic setting.” To take part in the Captured at Nottingham Castle challenge or for more information, please contact Andrew Legge on 07841 255 063, email andrew.legge@actionforchildren.org.uk or visit www.actionforchildren.org.uk/getinvolved/events/captured-at-nottingham-castle. breezegardening As we start to see the sun a little more it’s a reminder to get prepared for the next stages in our garden cycle... We all seem to hanker after Spring after what seems like eternal Winter here in the UK. With it’s lovely promise of better days the extra hours of daylight may not be that hot but they certainly warm the spirits! What then of our plans for the growing season ahead? The basis of all that we do is the growing medium itself - soil of course. As we begin tentatively poking the softening soil once again, we perhaps now ought to look back at what we didn’t get right last year and see if we can fix it this year as we learn the basics of good gardening. Here is a refresher as to what is so relevant about soil types and ultimately to what we will be doing later in the year : SOIL TYPES There are five main types of soil found in this country: • Clay. very fined grained and smooth when wet. Can be very difficult to work with but on the plus side it does have good moisture retention during dry spells. Best dug in the Autumn so allowing the frost to help break it up ready for spring. The use of lime - sprinkled on and dug in - helps to reduce its stickiness and opens up the soil. Also, this will be wetter for longer so it tends to be a ‘late’ planting soil i.e planting can’t take place early in the spring so any food crops will be ready later than crops grown in more sandy soils. • Sand. This is a lighter soil type (less than 10% clay content) and, due to it’s content, tends to warm up much more quickly in spring which allows for earlier planting. It can be worked year round but does need more care with watering and plant food as it contains less plant nutrition than clay soil. • Loam. In short this is a blend between the two soil types above. This mix of clay and sand (which can vary depending on location) is considered to be the best soil for a larger range of plants. Having the nutrition that is present in clay with the better drainage of sand type soil yields a nice balance which makes life easier for the gardener especially the novice! • Chalk. Usually deficient in plant nutrition and requires additional help in the form of manure etc. • Peat. Referred to as ‘sour’ due to their lack of lime, these soils contain more than 20% humus (the part of soil which is made of old decayed leaves and other plant material along with any dead insects etc - the biological component of soil). The use of lime and other additions such as sand (to improve drainage) greatly benefit them for gardening purposes.
THE SUBSOIL That which is below about a foot in depth (or less in some cases as some gardens are only a few inches over hard rock) is also part of any outdoor soil structure. The subsoil may be similar in nature to the ‘top soil’ but may not contain the goodness of that which is above it. The general approach in gardening is to get the top soil to as great a depth as possible. DRAINAGE Drainage is the key aspect of what the subsoil may be responsible for - with a clay subsoil causing problems during periods of wetter weather for instance (this can be big problem with lawns). Long term problems with a growing area may well have to take the subsoil into account. (continues...)

SOIL ACIDITY Amongst the most important factors that will determine what you grow (or how successful you will be in your efforts to grow) is the soil acidity balance The Ph Scale is nothing to feel bamboozled about: it is just a simple way to give you some idea of what the acid content or alkaline content is in your soil and this affects which plants will thrive. The ones mostly used these days are electronic and use a probe to stick in the ground. Test a few areas to get an overall picture of what a patch of soil is about, then you know from plant information what will or will not grow there. Or you can condition the soil by adding lime if the reading is below 6 (acid). If above 7.5 (alkaline) you can add soil sulphur. Both these products are available from garden suppliers. If you are getting above 7.5 on the Ph scale it means you won’t easily be able to grow vegetables until you do treat it as the soil will be too alkaline for most veg. When adding anything to your soil you must follow the instructions for the specific product you are using - usually it will tell you how much weight of product per square foot of garden.
breezemagazine 36
Changing the Ph can take several applications of whichever you are applying - and it is best not to rush in and simply ‘dump’ lime or sulphur to try and get a quick fix. Give the soil several months to absorb the compounds and then retest. Further ‘top up’ applications may well be needed from time to time in future to prevent the Ph drifting back to what it was. It is sometimes easier to simply find plants that suit the existing Ph in your garden environment. So, before Spring is sprung, do your homework and maybe get out and test your soil, ahead of the growing season. Obviously,if your existing plants are growing healthily then it’s safe to assume all is well and there is no need to test. Take a look at your soil with the knowledge gained in this article and gain a mental picture of what type of garden type you have. Then, when you next go to buy some plants to brighten up your garden, or to grow some new crops, you will be a long way ahead in achieving what you hoped
rather than seeing your efforts wasted. As always, enjoy your gardening and use this vital time to learn a few of the basics such as this and the article we ran last month on shelter. Then you can impress your friends this summer with your growing body of knowledge. Enjoy!

breeze pets corner It’s not just the folk round the dinner table who might be feeling stuffed by too much food this season – sadly our pets could be suffering the effects of overindulgence too, according to figures from leading animal welfare charity, PDSA. PDSA’s research* has found that 98% of dog owners are giving their pets inappropriate treats on a daily basis including chips, crisps and cake. If this trend continues over winter, a time when food temptations are at an all time high, pets are set to pile on the pounds and may even be poisoned by some common festive foods. “Giving a few extra treats here and there may seem harmless, but when given regularly over a long period all these extra calories, in addition to their own food, can have a devastating effect on the longterm health of our animal companions,” warns PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley. “Too much food and not enough exercise leads to obesity, which reduces a pet’s quality of life and is linked to other serious medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and heart disease. Obesity can also reduce a dog’s life expectancy by two years.” Sean adds: “People often don’t realise how many calories are in human foods and how our pets, which are often much smaller animals than us, may struggle to burn them off. “Any calories that can’t be burned off are converted in to fat, which begins to have harmful effects as the amount stored in the body increases.”
“This is why we’re urging pet owners to be treat-wise this winter. If you can’t help giving your pet a food treat, go for something healthy like a small piece of lean high- welfare meat. Lots of dogs also love raw carrot - it might sound boring, but carrot can make a healthy and much-valued food reward.” For more information visit www.pdsa.org.uk

Dog and Cat neutering special offer at Churchcroft Vets. HALF PRICE!
It’s the time of year, as the days get longer, where animals start to feel the love bug. In dogs and cats the end result is unwanted puppies and kittens contributing to the number of pets ending up in rescue shelters, homeless or worse. Cats in particular can start having kittens at just 5 months of age. However, with advances in veterinary care there is really no difficulty in preventing unwanted litters. Both dogs and cats can be neutered from before the age they can have young therefore avoiding any risk of them getting pregnant. There are also substantial further benefits to neutering. As George from Churchcroft Veterinary Centre says: “Neutering reduces the risk of fighting and straying in male cats and dogs. In female cats and dogs spaying massively reduces the risk of breast cancer and other life threatening diseases. Also, spayed animals do not come into season in the way intact females do”. Elizabeth, the nurse at Churchcroft adds: “Since we have followed recent evidence and started neutering younger, we have noticed how amazingly unaffected the younger cats and dogs are by the whole thing. They come in and play in their kennels until the operation and are usually playing again an hour or so later before they even go home. They really don’t seem to notice anything has changed”. To help ensure everyone can give their dogs and cats the benefit of early neutering, Churchcroft are offering HALF PRICE neutering until the end of April. That means cat neutering from just £23/29 and dog neutering from just £65/85. Hurry though because places are limited. Call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and take advantage of this deal immediately.

Practical Solutions If you have issues, which have been troubling you and want a practical approach to resolve them and move you on then Martin Smith, a therapist based in Long Eaton can help you. Martin has a well-established private therapy practice and deals with a variety of issues using common sense practical approaches of solution focused therapy. What puts you off seeking help through therapy for issues such as stress, anxiety, phobias or depressive states? Is it the thought of prolonged sessions, or deep analysis of your past life? Uncovering events and things you would rather not have uncovered? These are some of the common things that put many off going to see a therapist. As we uncover more and more about how our mind/body systems really work at a scientific and practical level we come to realise the need for more practical approaches which are based on moving forward from where we are now, rather than moving back to where we came from. Martin draws on a variety of techniques and therapeutic approaches, all working on the same theme of solution-focused therapy. A vital factor to Martin’s approach is flexibility. “We are all individuals and processes and interventions which work for one person may not work for others; it is vital to ensure treatment suits the client” comments Martin. As is the case with many Home Instead Senior Care franchise owners, Primo Sule has personal experience of the problems that arise when dealing with ageing family members. Finding the right help to support his 85 year old mother at home proved to be a major challenge and when the help was found, the service was poor and inconsistent. Following a similar experience when trying to obtain help for his mother in law Primo decided to look in some detail at domiciliary care provision, and after considering a number of options he discovered Home Instead Senior Care. "Once I looked at their approach to care and the quality of Caregivers I knew I had found the right organisation". Home Instead Nottingham was established in 2010 and now delivers care to clients across Nottinghamshire. Sarah Gell, a state registered nurse with 25 years experience in managing the provision of care within the private and independent sectors, joined the team during June 2010 and following an initial period as Community Liaison Manager took the role of Care Manager. “Our aim is to provide care that meets the requirements of people who come to us for help and to ensure that Caregivers are successfully matched with clients in order to go beyond basic needs and enhance the quality of life of those who use our services”. The Nottingham Home Instead Senior Care Office is part of a global network of more than 900 locally owned and operated offices.
