Handmade For Little Rascals is a small local business run by two neighbours Gaynor Hall & Helen Ashton in Beeston. They specialise in making handmade childrens clothes at affordable prices. They pride ourselves in their quality after working in the trade for many years. “Our range has expanded a lot since we started over a year and half ago, we have girls dresses from new born - age six, we have lovely boys cord trousers, a great range of babies bibs, taggie blankets and burb cloths all in matching fabrics and great for a gift. We have knitted and fleece hats in fun fabrics. We will make items to order for special occasions. Just get in touch for more details.” says Helen. They are now offering sewing packs for those who want to make their own little girl an extra special dress. Sewing classes are also offered at St Leonard's Community, Wollaton. Why not pop in and see them there on 5th April when they attend a craft fair - they will have a range of clothing and sewing packs along with lovely fabrics & trims. “We have started our own sewing classes at St Leonard's Community it's centre in Wollaton Nottingham. We are searching for an evening venue as well.” adds Gaynor. To add to their business portfolio they have now started to sell fabrics as well. Their Facebook page is called Craft Makers Fabrics. You will see them pop up at local craft fairs and they have their own sale booked in on 5th April 2014 at St Leonard's Community centre from 9.30- 11.30. Funeral Director Joanne Hutsby is pleased that seeing a woman leading a funeral is no longer an unusual occurrence. A funeral director for more than fifteen years, in the early days Joanne received numerous comments about how unusual it was to see a woman ‘in charge’ of a funeral. “I can’t remember the last time someone said that to me” says Joanne, a partner in the independent Eastwood Funeral Partnership, which has four funeral homes in Eastwood, Stapleford, Kimberley and Heanor, “which I consider to be a sign of how established women have become in this profession.” Joanne has always championed the role of women, and has been a member of Soroptimist International Nottingham for many years. This is a women’s organisation which strives to improve the lives of women and girls through service projects, lobbying and fundraising activities. Last year, Joanne was President of the East Midlands region of the organisation, and the highlight of her year was a peace vigil held at Speaker’s Corner in Nottingham to raise awareness of International Day of Peace. breezemagazine 9

I've never thought as myself as a business women but l suppose that is exactly what I am and have been for quite a while.� Coleen White has always had strong ties to Beeston with her families ownership of a shop since before she was born. “I worked in an office until l was married and had two boys who kept me very busy and very happy! lt was during that time that l started my business apprenticeship. I started to help my Mum and Dad in their second hand shops, Bodens on Chilwell Road. The shops originally belonged to my Grandma and Granddad. They opened the doors in 1910. In 1913 my Dad was born there and quite a bit later l was also born there! The shop was like Aladdin's Cave. If you lived in the area and walked passed it you just had to go in and explore. It was packed with treasures old and new. When my Mum and Dad retired it was a lovely shop, a great re-cycling centre. We sold everything from wardrobes to cups and saucers to almost everything in between. l followed in the family tradition, taking it over with my sons in 1987. My customers came from far and wide and l still see some of them in the Garage to this day.

At this time I also ran a catering business over in Ruddington where we had all kinds of family celebrations from silver/gold wedding anniversaries to 18th and 21st birthdays parties. From there in 1981 I started up my present business with my husband Dick White: Coldi Motors on Ellis Grove. Dick used to play for Liverpool Football Club and a lot of my present customers remember him. We were both members of Chilwell Manor Golf Club for twenty years, so we made a lot of friends there. To be in a local business is lovely because you get to know your customers and their family and friends over many years. To me that is part of business life that is vital as it relies on trust and I always remember that, making sure we look after them and providing a high level of service at an affordable price and with sensible advice when needed. I look forward to many more years running a business in this thriving and welcoming community of ours�.

breeze appeal Join Down Syndrome International for World Down Syndrome Day – 21 March 2014 21 March 2014 marks the 9th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) www.worlddownsyndromeday.org and each year the voice of people with Down syndrome, and those who live and work with them, grows louder. But there is still so much more we can do. Down Syndrome International (DSi) www.ds-int.org encourages our friends all over the world to choose your own activities and events to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities. We will share your WDSD World Events on our dedicated WDSD website in a single global meeting place. For WDSD 2014, DSi is focusing on: “Health and Wellbeing - Access and Equality for All” All people with Down syndrome have the right to access healthcare when required on an equal basis with others without discrimination and with proper assessment of the specific health needs of the individual. They will be highlighting that: 1. Having Down syndrome does not make a person unhealthy. 2. Down syndrome is a genetic condition, not an illness. 3. People with Down syndrome may have health issues throughout their lives, just like everyone else and they should have access to healthcare on an equal basis with others. 4. There are specific known health issues which may affect people with Down syndrome, for which accurate, evidence based information is available. 5. Health professionals should be aware of these specific issues when treating a person with Down syndrome. 6. Health professionals should not discriminate against people with Down syndrome by: • refusing to treat them;

• blaming health issues on Down syndrome in general, or; • considering only specific known health issues which may affect people with Down syndrome. The WDSD Global Video Event and WDSD Conference will both explore this important area of focus. If you would like to join this campaign, then they very much welcome its adoption into your plans for WDSD 2014. Once again in 2014, they are inviting everyone across the world to wear LOTS OF SOCKS on 21 March to get people talking about WDSD. Through this campaign you can also help them to raise much needed funds to help us develop “Reach Out”, our outreach training programmes supporting people with Down syndrome in developing countries. You can also participate in the WDSD activities by joining them on their various WDSD Social Media channels, and you can promote their WDSD Patrons Messages. “Whatever you plan to do, lets create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with Down syndrome on 21 March”.

As winter gives way to spring, and with the onset of longer and warmer days, thoughts often turn to outdoor activities. Camping, walking, cycling, picnics, barbecues…it’s enough to raise the spirits and shake off the dark, old, coat of winter. But here is another option, and it’s on your doorstep! In the local wildlife gem of Attenborough Nature reserve, you have the opportunity to experience the outdoors in a beautiful setting, learn a new skill, have some fun whilst exercising, and be part of a friendly and sociable club. Welcome to Attenborough Sailing Club! You can get a real buzz from skimming across the water on a warm, breezy, summer’s day, and although most people enjoy the sensation of being on a boat, many also imagine the sport is restricted to the wealthy. However, dinghy sailing is much more accessible than people would think. “Here at ASC we pride ourselves on providing a range of opportunities to be out on the water. For those that are competitive, there are several race series throughout the year. Races take place every Sunday, and also Wednesday evening during spring, summer and autumn. There is also the opportunity to take part in inter-club racing with other local sailing clubs. If you don’t want to compete, you can also take a boat out for relaxing cruising, and this is supported on Friday evening (between April and October), Saturday and Sunday.

Everyone is welcome, from complete beginners, to ultracompetitive experts, from juniors to the more mature. If you have never sailed before, ASC offers training courses to RYA level 2 standard, so you would be competent to sail in reasonable conditions. But of course, the best way to learn is to spend time out on the water, have fun, and discuss sailing with other members. You would be offered plenty of help and support, including advice on sailing techniques, how to choose your first dinghy, and how to make the most of the club facilities. A wide range of dinghy classes are sailed at the club, for both racing and cruising, and we have club boats available to suit all age groups that can be used by new members. The club enjoys the use of the ‘Conneries Lagoon’ on the edge of the nature reserve, and is ideally placed if you live in the Nottingham-Derby area. The British Heart Foundation store in Beeston is urgently appealing for volunteer drivers. Anyone who has a car and a couple of hours a week to spare can help. “We need volunteer drivers to collect donations of items to sell in our shop, from people who are unable to bring them in to the shop themselves�. These donations are the lifeblood of the shop. Without them they could not continue to raise funds for the fight against heart disease. For over fifty years the British Heart Foundation has pioneered research that has transformed the lives of people living with heart and circulatory conditions, as well as funding patient care and providing vital information, but so many people still need our help. East Midlands community urged to support East Midlands’ only children’s hospice’s birthday

The East Midlands’ only children’s hospice is celebrating 20 years of care this year and is calling on people in the area to help celebrate the milestone. Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People first opened its doors in 1994 and over the years, staff and volunteers have supported thousands of children, young people and family members. To commemorate its birthday, the charity wants to raise an extra £100,000 over the year to help fund more children’s nurses at the Loughborough-based hospice. Rainbows was founded by Gail and Harry Moore, whose daughter, Laura, died of Leukaemia in 1989. Laura's favourite thing in the world was a rainbow. The hospice was officially opened in April 1995 by HRH Prince of Wales and in 2009, a £4m extension was built to create a new therapy wing and separate facilities for young people. Mr Moore said: “It was 22 years ago that Gail and I stood in a field outside Loughborough overlooking the Charnwood Forest. This would be an ideal place to build the children’s hospice we said to each other. Three years previously, we had lost our five-year old daughter Laura to Leukaemia after three years of treatment, including a bone marrow transplant from her twin brother Kit. “The journey along the way has not always been easy. It has involved a lot of hard work from a lot of people to develop it into what it is today. After 20 years, Rainbows continues to realise its dream with wonderful facilities and palliative care programmes that have been instrumental in both extending the lives of our children, and improving their quality of life. Over and above everything however, its success is down to its people and the quality of care they provide to ensure that our children get the best support possible throughout their all too short journey of life.” Rainbows currently cares for 288 children and young people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses as well as supporting 249 bereaved families and 521 siblings. People can help to support Rainbows by joining in with 20th birthday celebrations which include the Rainbows Great Cake Bake; a “do 20 good deeds” schools’ challenge and business challenge. There will also be a birthday party for the children and their families, a ball and themed 20th events. Geoff Ellis, chief executive of Rainbows, added: “Rainbows is continually developing and is now a hospice that is nationally and internationally recognised. But none of this would have been possible without the amazing help that Rainbows has received from our supporters in the East Midlands over the last 20 years. “Turning 20 is a very special time for us and we have devised many ways that you can help to raise funds to support the hospice this year. Please do get involved, have some fun and be a part of your local children and young people’s hospice by joining in our celebrations. It can offer the chance to obtain the sort of grip and torque that hitherto has been difficult to achieve at the price. This is due in no small part to the
commitment that is taking place at Ssangyongs facilities and the emphasis that they place on delivering top class vehicles for less outlay. Being such robust vehicles the Rexton and Korando offer a useful and reassuringly commanding view of the road. This is a great benefit in today's sometimes frenetic driving conditions. Whilst the driver is well taken care of in terms of facilities and technology such as cruise control, self levelling headlights and windscreen de-icer to mention only a few, the passenger area is also well appointed. Plenty of room is given to the rear seated area and there is an option for two extra seats to fold up in the boot space of the Rexon, thus offering a total of seven seats great for extra kids on those trips out and may well be the feature many will wonder how they got on without it. Given that both the Rexon and the Korando are also specified as off road vehicles as well it’s no surprise that when you do turn off the hard stuff and onto a soft and slightly boggy, bumpy track or field turned parking space they soak up the rough stuff with ease. Again, its an option that many will find most useful when compared to a ‘conventional’ car and furthermore, with the more unpredictable spells of bad weather we seem to be getting here in the UK will be most welcome come the winter time especially.
The Rexon dispenses with gimmicks and works extra hard to bring solid and reliable performance to the discerning and wise buying customer. The Korando fits in nicely where a driver wants the extra grip of four wheel drive and which is durable on the inside as well the outside to take the knocks of everyday life without showing it unduly. This and a generous boot for domestic uses such as shopping make it a good choice for value conscious buyers who want to get about in something that looks smart as well. There are two other models in the range, the Turismo which comes as a two-wheel or four-wheel drive variant seven seater people carrier and the Korando Sports which is a four-wheel drive pick-up. The taste of spring... With spring approaching now we can at last look forward to seeing some real changes around the garden. First of all you can plant those seed potatoes out that we started last issue (we explained how to do this in last months article which you can view online). Any summer flowering bulbs that you intend to grow can be planted around mid March as well. You can obtain these from garden suppliers if you haven’t stored any from last year. Wait until the outside temperature gets up to around 13c though as if not the cold will inhibit growth and this can lead to them rotting in the ground as they can’t thrive. Choose a free draining site for your bulbs as they don’t like being in soggy soil and summer flowering bulbs really want to be in a warm and sunny position. If your soil is a bit on the clay side then add some sand two to three buckets should suffice within about a one metre planting area and add

some well rotted organic matter (leaves, grass, old vegetation from the home etc that has been composted down). Plant them down about two or three times the depth of the bulb size and about three bulbs widths apart when planting in groups. Try Lilium Arena or Canna Indica types along with Agapanthus for a lovely display come early summer. Why not start your own herb supply for this spring & summer’s gourmet efforts? (come on - we know you like to show off at least sometimes in the kitchen!). Herbs do have differing requirements but can be broadly split into two growing ‘sectors’: those such as thyme, sage, rosemary, french tarragon and oregano that like full sun; and those that like partial shade, such as rocket, sorrel, mizuna, mustard, parsley and chervil. For your typical window box full of herbs try starting off on the sunny side of the house with chives, oregano, lemon thyme and a creeping rosemary to drape over the edge. Looks good and offers those
wonderful tastes and aromas for your cooking! For the shady side of the house why not get your second window box up and running with wild rocket, chervil, French parsley and red mustard? In both cases use a soil based compost such as John Innes potting compost as very few herbs grow in peat. Also, soil based composts don’t dry out as quickly which keeps your herbs refreshed all day long (as long as you water them in the morning!). Use a feed on them that promotes leaf growth, between March and September. (continues....)

A Welcome To Wildlife It is easy to encourage greater biodiversity without compromising the way your garden looks. With a few small changes you can make to the way you manage your garden, you can bring major benefits for the creatures that call it their home. By choosing plants that provide pollen and nectar all season through, from spring (Crocus, and Mahonia for example) to autumn (Michaelmas daisy, Sedum spectabile and ivy, which is especially late to bloom and helps provide food into early winter) you give sustenance to life. Wildlife studies show that it doesn’t matter if a plant is native or not – Buddleja davidii comes from China and yet British native butterflies really love it! So you can choose from a wide variety. Growing a range of trees, shrubs and climbers can really help or a mixed hedge to provide food and shelter. Larger plants, particularly trees, support more wildlife with their food in the form of flowers, fruits and seeds. They also provide cover and nesting sites for garden animals, from insects to larger species such as birds. We have covered the subject of growing your own tree last month and in previous issues - so why not establish one this spring and get started? It may not look much at first but you are beginning the process of giving back to nature - if each house planted another tree it would equal millions of homes to a diverse range of creatures - all of whom work together to support our precious eco-system. Introduce water - it need not be so deep as to be hazardous to young children either - a decorative container of water will do. The single easiest way to 'add wildlife value' to a garden is to install a pond, even the tiny ready moulded ones seen in garden outlets but a large pot or even an inverted dustbin lid in an out-of-the-way spot will do. Plant round it to make it look natural and to encourage nature. Let’s begin our growing season with our garden friends and continue as we extend our knowledge and pleasure in the garden. Enjoy!

ATTENBOROUGH GETS NEW COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDER TEAM East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) in partnership with the Beeston & District Community First Responder scheme has launched a new Community First Responder (CFR) dispatch point in Attenborough. The team will respond to emergencies in Attenborough, Beeston, Long Eaton, Chilwell, Toton and the surrounding areas. Angela said, “This is a fantastic initiative that will help save more lives and we look forward to responding in our community” Types of calls a CFR might attend: • Cardiac arrest (defibrillation) • CPR • Stroke • Choking • Diabetic emergencies • Breathing difficulties (Asthma & Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disease) • Patients suffering from seizures (convulsions) • Chest Pains
EMAS has recently made a commitment to its CFR schemes with the purchase of 15 CFR cars and our scheme has been allocated a vehicle to remain in our community on a permanent basis. The vehicles will allow volunteers to travel to incidents in a marked and fully equipped car and these cars will remain in their respective communities, however volunteers are still fully equipped to respond in their own personal vehicles where necessary. The cars have high-viz markings to give the volunteers a much higher profile – as a charity organisation the schemes are grateful for the support of local people and businesses. Members of the community won’t fail to see our responders out and about doing their great work. The car scheme has already made a huge difference to our local community, helping people in their hour of need prior to the arrival of an Ambulance crew. Since October the car has responded to over 200 emergencies locally. “It is important to know that community first responders do not replace the professional service, but we are able to provide early resuscitation, de fibrillation and other medical assistance until the arrival of an ambulance”. Please note: The CFR team carry a Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) but local residents should also be aware there are a further two Community Public Access Defibrillators (CPADs) in Attenborough in the following locations: • Attenborough Cricket club – mounted on the pavilion wall in a steel yellow box • Vicarage – mounted on the side of the garage wall (Church Lane) The codes to access these AED boxes will be given when dialling 999 in the event of an emergency related to a cardiac arrest, chest pain or breathing difficulties. The Wollaton Branch the Royal British Legion Women's Section will be holding their annual Fair on May 10th to raise funds for widows and children. There will be home made cakes, bread, jam and chutney; plants, crafts and jewellery; White Elephant, Tombola, games and a Raffle. Entrance is £1 which will include tea and cake. Local charity shops are dependent on your generous donations. By donating your unwanted items to our shops, you will help to generate vital funds to transform the lives of older people. Every 10 minutes, a vulnerable older person is left helpless without the charity’s crucial work. Your local charity is reliant upon being able to raise over £3 million every year and over £300 every hour of every day to continue its vital work. Who can you help? Consider people like Barbara... After her beloved husband Stan died, Barbara would often go weeks without seeing or speaking to other people. She was unable to manage her household finances and struggled to do basic tasks like cooking, cleaning and reading letters. Partially sighted and suffering from diabetes, Barbara had no family to help her. With her independence slipping away, she became desperately low. Your generous donation could help distressed older people like Barbara to start enjoying life again, manage her finances, meet friends and support her with the help of a care worker. What you can donate Clothing and shoes; bags and accessories; jewellery; books, toys and games; home wares e.g. china, kitchenware, ornaments, pictures and collectibles; soft furnishings e.g. small rugs, linen and curtains; knitted items and blankets; electrical goods and small furniture.
