n 2009 the Nottingham Masters provided fantastic tennis, glorious sunshine and gave Northern Vision the perfect platform on which to grow. Legends such as Richard Krajicek, Greg Rusedski, Mats Wilander, Mansour Bahrami and Ilie Nastase entertained the crowds as well as top British junior Laura Robson. This year the Nottingham Masters in 2010 will entertain 250 corporate clients and fill a grandstand of 2500 public guests per day. With an exciting programme planned the event will be bringing together a strong team of legends to play there this year which so far includes Martina Hingis, Jeremy Bates, Paul McNamee, Barry Cowan and Mansour Bahrami with more players being released daily. The former Wimbledon champion from Switzerland Martina Hingis is coming to the Nottingham Masters. In 1997, Hingis most famously won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open to become the youngest female World no. 1 of all time. Hingis is very excited to appear in Nottingham, saying that she is really looking forward to play at the Nottingham Tennis Centre. But there will also be another former Wimbledon champion coming to the City of Legends. Dutchman Richard Kraijcek is looking to defend his title which he has won last year in an exciting final against Greg Rusedski. Having retired from professional tennis in 2003, Kraijcek is sure to impress again after he has shown an excellent form in 2009. Also arriving into the Nottingham Tennis Centre will be Mansour Bahrami. The man behind the moustache will come and entertain the crowd with his skills and talent, just like he did in 2009. Amongst other players to appear in Nottingham are also Paul McNamee, who won the doubles title at the All-England Lawn Championships in Wimbledon twice, and Jeremy Bates, former British Davis Cup captain and former British No. 1. However there will be even more players coming to Nottingham, so watch out: the legends are returning to Nottingham again! Full schedule of play will be announced a week before the event. The tournament will be a round robin format with each day play beginning at midday with singles and doubles legends matches continuing all afternoon. All of the tournament information can be found at www.nottinghammasters.co.uk * FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN TWO TICKETS ON ONE OF THE SPECIFIC DATES JUST ANSWER OUR QUESTION ON A POSTCARD STATING WHICH DAY YOU WOULD PREFER... PERFECT PATIOS
Warmer evenings are an ideal time to have a few friends round, light the barbecue and do some socialising, especially if your annuals are in full bloom and the garden is a riot of colour. Here’s some suggestions to make sure your patio is perfect...
H
ow do you perk up your patio for a social occasion? It's amazing how, with a little forethought, you can have your garden looking even better and with clever lighting and carefully-placed pots you can create a warm, inviting and sweetsmelling atmosphere. If your social gathering is imminent, have a look around your beds and borders and fill in any gaps with spring bedding which is already in bloom when you buy it. Check out your indoor plants which can also add drama if you bring them outside. Pot chrysanthemums, spider plants and kangaroo vines will provide instant architectural interest and colour outside at this time of year. Create scented corners in seating areas - pots of stocks, nicotiana and lavender will provide
breezemagazine 16
delicious scents in the evening, as will sweetpeas climbing up wigwams. If your sweetpeas aren't near your patio, cut as many as you can and put them in a vase in the middle of your patio table, where guests can enjoy the colour and scent. At the same time you'll be encouraging further blooms on the plants by regular cutting of the flowers. Flower fragrances tend to be stronger in the evening, when the air is warm and humid and there isn't any breeze to waft it away. Some plants increase their perfume production at night to attract moths to pollinate them. The tobacco plant Nicotiana alata actually folds up its petals during the day and comes to life at night. Lighting can also make all the difference to the look of a patio and garden. After dark, it can create shadows, highlight interesting
architectural plants such as cordylines and Japanese maples and bringing the garden to life for dining and entertaining. If you have a small space, invest in a lowvoltage garden lighting kit which operates several lights off one transformer. Solar lighting is okay for providing subtle light to mark a path or steps but it won't light up your garden. Don't kill the atmosphere of the patio with too bright a light. If you have a fairly small area, large lanterns, citronella candles to keep the bugs away and nightlights in a variety of outdoor casings can create an intimate mood. If you need more light, try switching your inside lights on, which will illuminate the exterior and make the house look warm and inviting. If you are having an evening party, use marker lights to illuminate paths and steps for safety. Spotlights can be used to highlight focal points in the garden, but avoid using them on the patio or they will kill the atmosphere. A few days before the event, trim the hedge, mow and edge the lawn and give beds and containers a last tidy-up, deadheading and tying in plants as necessary. Most importantly, have fun with your friends on the night!

breeze sowing the seeds GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT Fruit tree thinning If your apple and pear trees fruit some years and then don't for many more, it is often because the tree exhausts itself by overcropping one year and then has to take one or more years off after that. It is known as biennial bearing. The solution is to thin the fruits ruthlessly in early July, after the June drop, a natural process when trees, of their own accord, will drop small, diseased and pest ridden fruits. Remove at least half, taking the crowded, deformed and diseased and leaving only the best. This reduces the load on the tree by reducing the number of seeds. The remaining fruits should swell and give a good crop. The tree should fruit each year provided the fruits are always thinned. Try leaving no more than one apple or pear to each handsized area of foliage.
BEST OF THE BUNCH - Peony Peonies are the blousiest blooms on the block, producing huge pompom flowers which are hard to beat, even though their flowers tend to be shortlived. And while many peonies flower in May, some bloom later in June and make great cut flowers, if you can bear to snip them off. Herbaceous peonies are best grown in borders among other perennials. Many grow to around 1m (3ft), their weighty flowers appearing over the deep green leaves. Good companions include bearded irises, and they can be given a stunning backdrop of clematis growing up a trellis fence. Tree peonies, which are deciduous but keep their woody stems throughout winter, flower later than the herbaceous varieties and their flowers tend to be larger. Newly-planted peonies may not flower the first year as they hate being moved. But give them a chance and it will be worth it. They should be planted in a sunny spot in rich, fertile, well-drained soil. If you need to move one that's already in your garden, do it in October when the plant has lost its leaves.
breezemagazine 18
THREE WAYS TO... Reduce maintenance Consider what jobs take the most time and are the least enjoyable. Maintaining a lawn, for instance, is time-consuming. Redesign lawns which have fiddly, small parts to cut to make them easier to mow. Check you are using the easiest and most efficient mower for the job.
1 2
Look at your borders. Could the planting be redone to feature more trouble-free plants such as potentillas, herbaceous geraniums, peonies and shrub roses? Cut down on taller herbaceous plants that need staking and splitting, annuals and bedding plants which are moved in and out.
3
Apply a thick mulch every two years of a coarse-grade bark or equivalent in the spring to suppress annual weeds and reduce back-breaking weeding.

breeze get ready for summer Why is exfoliation so important to any face/body skincare routine? During the winter months our skin is generally drier, duller and appears thicker due to a build up of dead skin cells on the surface of our skin. One of the most effective ways to address this is by having a face and body exfoliating treatment to prepare your body for summer. Preparing your body will give you an even skin tone, smooth the texture of your skin, help you to tan and ensures your fake tan goes on evenly! Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells. By removing the dead skin cells, not only does it prepare the body, it also helps to speed up your cell renewal process which keeps us looking young. It also enables the products you are using to penetrate deeper into the skin making them more effective. Exfoliation is quick and easy to do and should form part of your skincare routine. For a fantastic treatment and expert advice, book Escape in Long Eaton’s offer to give your face and body the perfect start to summer! FUN OF THE FARM
At Manor Farm Owl, Donkey and Woodland Adventure, they are proud to say...“We just about have it all” – because we are more than “just another farm park”. Breeze finds out more...
S
et in thirty acres of beautiful Wolds countryside, Manor Farm offers easy access for all ages and abilities – pushchairs to wheelchairs, toddlers to teens, parents to great-grandparents. Visitors are able to enjoy a leisurely stroll from the main entrance, past the Old Barn Coffee Shop and the Main Animal Barn to see the cuddly rabbits and guinea pigs, with the opportunity then to feed ducks or listen to a story in their ‘Animal Chat Room’. Follow the path towards the lake and stop to admire the handsome donkeys grazing or playing in their paddock – they may even be nosey enough to come across and say “Hello”! When you are able to tear yourself away from these characters, you can explore ‘Hoots Hollows’ – home to their impressive array of Owls from Around the World – you might even want to ‘get up close and personal’ to a number of friendly birds. When you finally decide to leave the owlery continue on towards the lake, taking time to see if you can spot the many native countryside plants and herbs in their Wildflower Meadow – here is a chance for the young ones to play in the sand and spend some time pond dipping. Whilst you are here make some time for a spot of bird watching – there are several types of duck and, from the bird hide, you can see lots of woodland birds as they come to feed. The Nature Trail then takes you along the brook, past some of the new planting and ‘Beetle Banks’ (built to provide homes and food for the wildlife) and you find yourself at the magical Fort Adventure Play Area – a paradise of activities for the youngsters to let their imagination run wild and let off steam on the range of play equipment specially selected to be challenging as well as adventurous.
breezemagazine 34
Get them trim on the trail; defend the Fort; catch the train; or ride off on the wagon and horses – there are lots of different adventures to be had for all ages. Whilst all this is going on around you, those of a more relaxed attitude can sit amongst the trees and willow structures and unwind with a picnic. When, eventually, it is time to move on, head back towards the Young Farmers’ Play Barn, a few minutes walk past their flock of sheep (known as the ‘Manor Farm Lawnmowers’) and admire their ponies. At the Play Barn even more adventure awaits! Navigate your way around the dark tunnels and slide in the Knight’s Castle; Captain ‘The Skullion’, our Pirates’ Galleon, on an adventure for treasure; race to the finish on the pedal carts whilst mum or dad keep an eye on the little ones in the tots soft play area and the toddlers’ pedal tractors. Then everyone can enjoy a well-earned drink and snack from the Gallery Tea Bar. Time is getting on, but there is still plenty more to do – it’s Animal Bedtime, and they certainly won’t wait for you! In from their paddocks come the geese and ponies closely followed by the goats and the llamas. Next, up come the donkeys who like a final fuss and feeding the llamas a carrot is an absolute must! This show is brought to a close by the Star – Afra the pony, who shows his manners before wishing everyone goodnight and We’ve one family pass for 2 Adults and 2 Children thanking them for coming. to give away! As part of National pet month Churchcroft Veterinary Centre held a tea party in aid of The Blue Cross Animal Charity on bank holiday Monday 3rd May. Homemade cakes and tea were served by nursing assistant Elizabeth and veterinary surgeon George. George also provided free flea checks and weight checks for the dogs and cats that came along to take part although he declined to comment on the weight of the clients themselves who asked for advice! A healthy £107 was raised for The Blue Cross and will be used to provide care for animals in distress throughout the U.K. Elizabeth said “We are very grateful to our generous clients for helping us to raise this money for such a good cause.” Churchcroft plan to hold another charity fund raiser on the Summer Bank Holiday on Monday August 30th, more details to be released nearer the time. The new Beeston Conservative Club opened on 16th April 2007, at which time the move from its previous location on Acacia Walk was complete. Founded in 1903, this is the third location the club has occupied in Beeston. Local residents will remember the Station Road location as the old Bostock’s building and its use as the Regent ballroom in the 1930s. Whilst ensuring that the interior has been completely renovated and attractively restyled and complete with all the latest features, the Club has been careful to retain the building’s façade. In particular, the magnificent bay window, which dominated the front with its stained glass, which will be remembered as a feature of the ballroom, now forms an attractive setting to the front of the lounge. The Regent Suite on the ground floor is available for hire and offers excellent meeting accommodation for up to 100 persons with a dance floor and bar facilities available. The club enjoys a variety of entertainment throughout the week including popular prize bingo, the Lucky Thirteen Card Game and a weekly quiz. One of the most successful evenings is Tuesday evening when many participate in playing indoor bowls. Members are now settled into the new surroundings and wish to invite new members to join them. Those considering membership may call in and take a look around and collect a joining form. A introductory, six months’ special rate membership is currently available to new members. Beeston Conservative Club, Winston Churchill House, 146 Station Road, Beeston. Contact the Secretary on 0115 925 4391 or e-mail on: regentsuite@beestonconservativeclub.co.uk
If you are unattached and want to meet someone special but are fed up with leaving it to chance or don’t want to risk internet dating, singles events or newspaper advertisements, Connections, your local personal introduction agency could be the answer. Since 1985, Connections has had great success helping unattached people aged 35 – 60+ find a meaningful, long term relationship. Its members live mainly in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire areas so unlike nationwide agencies members aren’t expected to travel all over the country to meet someone. Owner Victoria Edwards says, “Looking for someone special is often a daunting prospect with few, if any safeguards. I come across people who have had bad experiences using internet dating sites. For example, they see a photograph of the person and when they meet them realise it was taken twenty years ago! Sadly, people can be untruthful about themselves, their circumstances and even worse - are married.” Victoria meets everyone before they join. She says, “As a personal matchmaker, I feel it is extremely important to meet clients to find out first hand what sort of person they are and the type of partner they are seeking.” She deals with every aspect of membership and carefully selects introductions for you. Connections belongs to the Association of British Introduction Agencies a professional body with strict rules and regulations made up of the top 30 agencies in the country. HOROSCOPES
THE MONTH AHEAD
By ANNE HARBOUR Dip.Hyp. HPD. MNCH - Clinical Hypnotherapist HPD. Member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (MNCH) Telephone: 07845 405835
ARIES [21ST MAR-20TH APRIL]
CANCER [22ND JUN-21ST JULY]
LIBRA [22ND SEP-21ST OCT]
CAPRICORN [22ND DEC-21ST JAN]
May holds the key to solving many a problem during this particular month. Tension and pressure building up second week is quickly eliminated when realising the core of the problem. Taking each day at a time you soon get things under way speeding up the process of achieving one particular goal within the foreseeable future. By letting go of the past you release those emotions which have clung to you like glue allowing the real you to re-surface once again. Happy to meet up close ties are formed once again.
Things slow down a little, as you seem to have achieved a certain level of satisfaction with one project. Taking into consideration your abilities to help and support others you witness the end of a few weeks work into making one persons life much easier. Romance is highlighted 24th when a difficult situation turns into a special and mementos occasion. Looking forward to a break of some kind you go on a spending spree with some regret afterwards. Family gatherings allow you to catch up generally.
Any ideas of peace and quiet beginning of the month soon go out of the window when family matters take hold for one day. Getting the story right is one thing then realising things are not as bad as they seem lightens the day and removes all doubt. Any opportunity for future meetings are welcomed in view of long-term commitments. Cancellations of any kind rock the boat for a few days but all ends well. Happy hours are spent with those you love with May ending calm and peaceful for those around.
Any minor worries or concerns are lifted first days of the month with misunderstandings sorted and forgotten. Giving a helping hand when others can’t gets things moving one way or another. By making plans you look forward to a break of some kind. Meeting up with a person you haven’t seen for some time brings happiness and contentment. Improvement in finances becomes pleasing with a positive outcome for the future. Taking care of your well being brings dividends and to those you love.
TAURUS [21ST APR-21ST MAY]
LEO [22ND JULY-21ST AUGUST]
Questions may be asked to which you are not prepared to answer. You feel at times you are banging your head against a brick wall, getting nowhere. Fed up with a long drawn out situation you draw the line and prepare to make those inevitable changes, enhancing your life in general, giving you the emotional stability you so desire. A change of scenery with those you love does the power of good with the go ahead of plans for the future. Standing your ground where others have failed gains resects.
Trying your best to please everyone becomes a bit of a challenge. As the month progresses you take stock of your life in general, realising who and what is important. Finances may become tight but you manage to secure some form of relief before the month ends. Minding your own business and just getting on with your own thing gives one person the signal to leave well alone. Any feelings of isolation disappear when a family get together happens with firm arrangements for future meetings.
Remarkable progress is made when invited to make a journey away from home by those familiar to you. Creative ideas for making a little money move in around the 7th to the 19th are pleasing. Some support you venture forward and take one opportunity you cannot refuse. Generous and lovable you make sure your not hurt once again when romance takes over. After a discussion ideas for the home go ahead with a view of a small alteration along the way. Travelling to a familiar place you enjoy time out.
VIRGO [22ND AUG-21ST SEP]
SAGITTARIUS [22ND NOV-21ST DEC]
PISCES [22ND FEB-20TH MAR]
However busy you become during May you manage to accomplish so much for yourself and others. Hiccups in life appear when least expected but as always you take control and make everything run smoother and happier for all. A profound remark made by a stranger gets your back up. But with the look you give them they apologise and move away. Giving advice to a younger member of the family may not be taken at first but you soon see a difference in their attitude toward you with pleasing results.
Feeling more confidants, you make a journey with lasting impressions. With love and romance all around you cant go wrong. Being taken out wined and dined certainly makes up for lost time. Visiting a place mystical and magical enlightens you, with open invitations to go there in the future. Bringing paperwork up to date frustrates you but has good and pleasing results in the end. Support is given to a loved one when dealing with matters of the heart. Feet up enjoying treasured moments are welcomed.
This month you shake off any negative energies hanging around. Going where the sun and sea is may prove difficult but you improvise when needing a little peace and quiet second part of the month. Younger members of the family keep you well occupied and have their moments. Thoughts of changing direction regarding your working life become important with the outcome favourable to many. Keeping yourself to yourself you hear news of a pleasant nature. Those unfinished jobs in the home are completed.
GEMINI [22ND MAY-21ST JUN] Influential and ready to move forward you gather information, which leads to a positive outcome for all. Risks worth taking will be, with an overall view for the future. Loved ones support your ideas assisting you in making the outcome happen sooner rather than later. Smaller members of the family bring laughter and joy when time means nothing. News of a birth and a forthcoming anniversary bring celebrations. Gathering ideas for change in the home drives some one else to despair.
breezemagazine 42
SCORPIO [22ND OCT-21ST NOV]
AQUARIUS [22ND JAN-21ST FEB] More confident with yourself you make certain plans, which help you, and others gain a more satisfactory outcome when younger members of the family are involved. Frustrated with one situation out of your control you go out of your way to bring an ending in sight pleasing to all. Challenges are met head on with benefits following. Not taking no for an answer you stand your ground until a person understands your meaning. Away from home with family you discover new and exciting places to visit.

On 22nd March the Toton Special Care Baby Knitting Circle held its 27th Birthday “Open House”. Members and friends had knitted 953 garments and cot covers over the past year for the QMC Neo Natal Unit and these were on display and gave much encouragement to new ladies who decided to join in this scheme. The stalls and donations raised £390.37 and £200 of this has been donated to the University of Nottingham Heartlight Sensor Appeal for a monitor to help brain damage or even death in tiny babies. Over the 27 years the circle has produced 18,401 garments etc for the Neo Natal Unit and in recent years 198 Angel pockets for the labour and Gynaecology wards. Information and offers of help would be welcome by the cirle on 0115 973 2861
A Women’s Meeting is held at Toton Methodist Church on alternate Tuesdays at 2.15pm. It is a non-denominational devotional meeting and out theme is “Outreach”. Projects reflect care in local, national and overseas charities – over the last twelve months they have had speakers and been able to help 14 different charities They have just completed a Winter project where members and friends knitted in their spare time at home 509 garments and blankets for the Notts Police Aid Convoys to take to Albania, whilst non-knitters helped with donations for wool and transport. They are anxious to enrol new members and would stress that there is no membership fee but a voluntary collection is taken to cover expenses and charities. Easter week they held a Communion Service led by Rev. Melanie Stoodley and cards and chocolate eggs were distributed. Why not go and see what makes them tick. Dates and further details can be obtained from Eileen Hall on 0115 973 2861.
