Mike Barnes started his working life training as an accountant with local textile firm Penn Nyla and later Cautaulds but soon realised that his future lay in working for himself. With the knowledge he gained he began manufacturing underwear using the world renowned Nottingham Lace. From a small factory in the Nottingham Lace Market, market traders and shops were supplied by Mike. He disposed of his seconds on Sneinton market where he became easily recognised with his distinctive moustache! Besides selling his stock Mike become known locally as a source on the methods of garment production and began to sell specialist elastics and trimmings. Habadashery and craft supplies were added to the range and the word spread to the dance schools and theatre groups that if something special was required Mike would probably be able to get it or at least provide the necessary contact. Mikes business has now grown and has a wide range of fancy textile, trimmings and ribbons. Visit The Sewing Box, Willoughby Street, Beeston NG9 2LT Tel: 0115 913 4043. www.mikebarnes-trimmings.co.uk

We’ve lots to celebrate this month. Including welcoming more new businesses in to our area.... If you have a new business and would like to be featured call our team on 0115 967 8663 Let the readers of Breeze know you are here! Marty Leighton gives us an insight into his progression from the Nottingham coalfields into the field of fashion and the imminent launch of an internet fashion wear site from Beeston. “Born into a mining family, unremarkably on leaving school I ended up wo’kin’ down th’ pit. I’d wanted to study art but my headteacher, who’d left an indelible impression on me, usually via the cane, begged to differ! “ If you go down this road son” he mocked as he clocked my portfolio, “all you’ll end up drawing is the dole”. So there was an inevitability about following in my forefathers pit booted footsteps -sweatin’ cobs in the sweltering heat of the most inhospitable of workplaces - the coal face. A few years later I met my wife, a sample hand machinist, who’s ambition was to start her own business which together we eventually did. I have always made it a priority to buy and retail ‘British’ whenever possible, thus giving my customers ‘Lovely Quality’ at a ‘Fair Price’ which is precisely what our U.K. registered trade mark ‘Love Affair’ has represented to our customers over the years. We’ve now used our unique trade mark to create our internet domain name www.loveaffairfashionwear.com a bargain fashion wear site for all ages. So come on ladies, take a walk on the glamorous side. Visit our site or our Beeston retail unit - for the real deal - the ‘Love Affair Deal’. Willoughby Street, opposite Iceland on the High Road, Beeston. Open Mon, Thurs, Friday and Saturday 10am to 3pm.

Meet Linda, the owner of LH Millinery based in Sandiacre. “After working in Accounts for a number of years, in 2004 I decided to leave my job and work for myself selling hats on a market stall in Long Eaton, Bakewell, and Castle Donnington. Customers often asked for different styles, colours and sizes which is when I decided to look into doing a Millinery course. I attended a few in Wombourne which whet my creative appetite. I followed this by taking a HNC in Millinery at Leeds College of art and design and haven't looked back since. So if you need a fascinator, hat or bag which is dyed to match your outfit then please give me a call. I am also in the process of developing my hat hire side of the business, all enquiries welcome. New Super club set to open its doors in Long Eaton Long Eaton is set to have a new super club in its midst with the opening of Ciros Long Eaton. Opening up in what was formerly known as Credos nightclub, Ciros mission statement is simple: to bring the Midlands community music they want to hear in a safe secure and fun environment. The club’s music policy is 'anything goes', mixing up dance classic, current charts, R & B, live bands, seventies & eighties and the odd superstar DJ thrown in for good measure. Ciros Long Eaton is brought to you by mother and son team Lisette and Lee Firetto, who started off in the nightclub trade twelve years ago with a little local nightclub in the market town of Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire. Through hard work and the support of the local community they managed to grow the club to a thousand capacity national venue regularly hosting international acts and DJ's such as Judge Jules, Danny Dyer, Sub Focus, Stanton Warriors, Kaiser Chiefs, Sean Lynch (Boyzone), Andy C, and Jaguar Skills to name a few. Ciros Long Eaton will follow a similar format with the launch weekend being set for the four day Jubilee bank holiday starting on the 1st of June. Over that weekend the club will play host to four days of acts ranging from Radio 1’s Judge Jules to national acclaimed live band Snatch, a 70’s and 80’s night and a bank holiday Sunday with two of old Credos old legends Pete Reynolds and Leroy Crawford playing at the club. Climb every mountain... This summer, local residents Mike and Sue will be attempting to climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania - the world’s tallest free-standing mountain. Their trek will take them through five different eco-systems until they eventually reach the Uhuru Peak summit which stands at over 19,000 feet above sea level. They will face eight consecutive days of trekking with the final day challenging them to 15 hours of climbing at high altitudes. Breeze finds out what inspired the challenge...

Needless to say, preparations have been under way for some time now and, with two snapped achillies tendons and a trip to the summit of Mount Snowdon behind them, the pair are just about ready for their challenge! Although the original drive behind their trip was to fulfil personal ambitions, Mike and Sue would like to take the opportunity to raise money for charity. Their chosen organisation is Pseudomyxoma Survivor which provides invaluable support for survivors and carers of people with Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP). PMP is a rare cancer that usually starts in the appendix and is an extremely rare condition thought to affect between only one and two million people worldwide per year. As the condition is so rare it is often difficult for sufferers and their families to find information and Pseudomyxoma Survivor provides them with much needed support through a worldwide network of fellow sufferers. For further information on PMP, please visit the website www.pseudomyxomasurvivor.co.uk. If you would like to support Mike and Sue on their challenge and help to raise money for PMP, please visit their Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/mike-hibbert. All donations will be very gratefully received and go directly to the PMP charity.

breezeappeal Long Eaton Street pastors have been in action for three years now. Patrolling the town centre streets from 11pm until 3am on Friday nights. During that time they have forged positive relations within the late night social scene. They continue to build on the good co-operation between the Police, the Pub trade and local night time revellers. Breeze catches up with them... The Long Eaton Street Pastors could possibly claim to have saved at least one life, when finding a seriously injured person, administering first aid whilst calling for paramedic assistance. Often helping worse for ware vulnerable young people to get home safely and are getting a reputation for handing out ‘flipflops’ and water to the ‘high heeled needy’. All the team members of the Glo Street Pastors come from a variety of local churches, putting their Christian faith into action. “Bringing light into the darkness” says one member. Each Glo Pastor has their own personal reasons and their own tales to tell. A common question they get asked is “why do you do this? “ Julie, one of the members of the group explained: “I wanted to join Glow Pastors when I learned that my neighbour said they had stopped going into Long Eaton. I thought that was so sad and wanted to help. I believe we should all do ‘our bit’, but especially as a Christian. Instead of moaning I felt I needed to get out and put what we believe into action.” Adrian, another member adds: “Love for our community and a passion for people was the simple reason I got involved with the group”.

breezemagazine 20

A passion for life, people and hope for the future of their local area is a strong feeling amongst all the Glo street Pastors. All their team members are CRB cleared and undertake regular and ongoing training with the Police Authorities, First Aid and other official organisations. They were thanked recently by a lady who was so grateful for the Pastors assistance, ensuring the safe return of her daughter after she was abandoned by her friends in a very vulnerable situation. Long Eaton Glo street pastors continue to help make their town centre a safer place to enjoy a night out for everyone. Further information can be found at www.trinitylongeaton.org.uk by clicking on the “what we do“ tab and following the link to ‘Glo street pastors’.

breezebook review Welcome to our regular Book Review, where we give you the chance to win copies of the books we feature. Scott may not have come out of the Antarctic alive but the “rough notes” and “dead bodies” left to tell the tale have meant that his spirit is still very much alive. As we commemorate the centenary of Scott’s Polar expedition, there are queues on the slopes of Mount Everest and a proliferation of organised cycling challenges, expeditions, ocean crossings and similar adventures. His tales of endurance, hardship and courage still inspire those many - who are dissatisfied with their life, desperate to see more of the world, or determined to raise money for charity – to down tools and start on the adventure of a lifetime. With a foreword by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, How To Get to the North Pole and Other Iconic Adventures is the perfect guide for armchair adventurers and anyone who has ever dreamed of doing something really BIG. Drawing on the experience of his own adventures as well as those of organising and supporting around 100 expeditions on all seven continents, author Tim Moss has put together a guide on how to: · Row an Ocean · Get to the North Pole · Cross a Desert · Sail the Seven Seas · Cycle around the World · Navigate a Big River · Get to the South Pole · Climb an Unclimbed Mountain

WIN A COPY OF THE BOOK!

A chapter is dedicated to each of the individual challenges. For each one Moss leads with a concise summary of the vital statistics – such as level of difficulty, cost, who has done it already, and most importantly, its glory potential!

With low heat output and C02 emissions, the lack of UV also prevents fading or degradation of fabrics in retail and display areas. Domestic Replacing recessed 50w down lights with 5w-6w equivalent LED bulbs will cut the heat output significantly and if you have ten lights in a kitchen this could bring the electricity cost of the lighting down by ten times from 500w to 50-60w. John, the Manager of Reset Renewables explains why LED energy efficient lighting is the obvious choice in these cost conscious times: “I have them in my bathroom and kitchen, reducing my lighting costs by a factor of around ten and no fire risk associated with the equivalent halogen - they are now a mature technology.” He says. LED lighting comes in many different forms, including down lights, modular fittings and bulkheads amongst many others. This is one of the many simple ways to reduce long term costs to householders and businesses alike. This is probably the best time to invest in solar PV, with the cost of installation at an all time low. With the new feed-in tariff of 21p per unit a 2kwp install could save you over £500 per year on electricity saving. Feed-in tariff payments giving a return on investment of nearly 9%. These can give a much better return on investment than a typical bank or building society and is a tax free income on domestic installations. The feed-in tariff is index linked and, after years of talking about climate change, feed-in tariffs are fast becoming the accepted norm when upgrading your energy use. Solar PV or Photo Voltaic panels are electricity generators on your roof, they capture the sun light and turn it into electricity which you can use or sell back to your electricity supplier, so you are getting paid twice and if you use the electricity you save on your utility bills. This almost sounds too good to be true but the government have introduced these measures in order to attract large numbers of people across the country to install their own generators, using solar PV, and help them meet their climate change targets (as there is no C02 produced with solar technology) This is the green clean way of saving on your utility bills and the environment.Furthermore, these payments are government guaranteed for 25 years. The cost of a 2kw installation starts at just £5750 and a 2kw system would be ideal for a large terrace house or semi. A detached house could accommodate a 4kw panel array with a return on investment of up to 12%! So get using that roof space above your head to earn yourself £££££! and call us today for more information with no obligation.

Relax with a smile...

Visiting Hoar Cross Hall you are greeted with a sign ‘Through these doors walk the loveliest people in the world’ which is a warm gesture and unexpected graphic in such a grand entrance. Breeze had the pleasure of being one of those people... On arrival we were greeted and checked in by friendly and welcoming staff members. Whilst checking in, you cannot help but notice The Long Gallery is spectacular, fooling you to think you are on a daily visit to a stately home not a spa! The walls are decorated with famous personalities with signatures to show their appreciation of their visit to the Hall. You really feel you are amongst the rich and famous, not an everyday experience for most of us! On arrival you are given luxurious robes to wear throughout your stay. Each of the rooms you enter are designed to give you the best experience - Snooze Room, Slumber Lounge are wonderful for relaxing. The spa’s are definitely worth indulging in. The heated beds give a relaxing way to dry off once you’ve sampled the massage foot therapies in the spa area. Following our relaxation and pampering morning. We headed for lunch which is included in the day, comprising of a delicious 3 course buffet, in the Plantation café. The chef was on hand to proudly announce his ongoing master chef of Yorkshire Pudding trials.

The afternoon was spent at leisure after having our chosen treatment form the experts in the treatment rooms, a relaxing back massage or a facial. Both thoroughly enjoyable. Returning to the room, the Penthouse Suite was amazing, featuring a hot tub and outside balcony area overlooking the stunning gardens. The rooms reflect the stately home in their décor and design. In formal attire we headed for The Ballroom. A perfect end to the day. The staff were once again courteus and helpful in recommending choices from the menu, which proudly states ‘We are what we eat’. They proudly source and prepare local food. Something the chefs are passionate about and this is reflected in the quality. On reflection of our days events, The Ballroom, Champagne Bar and the soft tones of the piano playing in the background made you fully appreciate that Hoar Cross Hall was a rare treat in such wonderful settings. The mix of contemporary fittings in parts set against the backdrop of the stately home really is unique. As we prepared to leave we picked up a gold card, a token gift to take away. Another little reminder of the ethos of Hoar Cross Hall and its staff - a reminder of how to approach your day - with a smile. As we thumbed through the guest book it was obvious that not just us had a smile as we left. Leaving us with just one dilemma - when should we return! Minster View gives the parents of children with difficult and long term conditions a much needed break to re-charge their batteries. It’s a short break care home which helps with over night stays for children and young people with Autism, complex needs and learning difficulties. “It is a great and much needed support to families and has done many things for all the young people who attend. “They go out and about within the community.” says one of the postmen who will be riding. “The young people need an enormous amount of encouragement to do the simplest things which we all take for granted, they find it very difficult to communicate and socialise.”

Minster View are in the process of creating a new sensory room which will benefit the young people immensely. The equipment needed to fill this sensory room is very expensive. They have also created a secret garden and a vegetable plot in which the young people can be involved with. “In the past we have done other fund raising events supporting a local school in which money was spent towards a new mini bus for the pupils to get about and sensory equipment.” adds another member of the cycling posse. If you would like to consider sponsoring the postmen who are riding for this good local cause please contact Julia on 07976 875 596. “We would all like to say a big thank you to those who have supported us in the past” adds one of the group.

breezegardening This month we look at more ways to help turbo charge your garden with delightful Perennial colour this summer. Let’s see how we can expand on our efforts to really get the colour going in your garden - this summer and beyond. Now we can look at Perennials which ‘magically’ pop up each year to give us lots of free colour! Knowing the planting zone can be very useful when you are planning your garden and flower bed areas. If you want some foliage all year round then look for something evergreen. Examples of evergreen perennials include Begonia, Azalea and Rhododendron. Examples of perennial herbs are Basil, Chives, Oregano, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme. It is useful to know as these herbs won’t grow all year round in the garden but do come back the following spring/summer. For colour - which is what we are looking at in this article - there are many flowering types of perennial plants which will offer colour each summer without planting as we have to do with Annuals (the average bedding plants bought each summer season from garden centres etc).

Here are some Perennial types which flower to check out - make sure that whatever type you choose that you plant it in the appropriate part of your garden - that is the best way to choose rather than just go on looks alone as we want to succeed in our garden this year! Full sun perennials: Choose ones that are able to take the heat such as Campanula or Buddleia, Salvia and Helenium to name just a few. Perennial borders made up of full sun perennials can give the textures and shapes that really make the garden sing with a delightful harmony of colour! Full sun perennials are usually easy plants to grow for the novice gardener. Here are a few tips: Sunny Perennials care • Avoid heavy clay soils. The excessive winter moisture in these garden soils leads to rotting and death during winter months. • Full sun position (many can tolerate shade in the morning or late afternoon when it’s not as intense). • Sun on them between 9am and 3pm is vital to success so think how your house affects the shade in your garden before planting. • Soils with high organic matter content are highly beneficial so add mulch from your compost pile or buy some to add. • ‘Sunny’ perennials need regular maintenance e.g dead heading, pruning, division. • High organic content (mulch/compost) in the soil boosts perennial plant growth. • You can try a plant within a setting in your garden but don’t always expect success if the conditions above aren’t met. In which you can plant elsewhere in your garden or change the type of plant you put in.

breezegardening Shaded area perennials: • A partly shady (or mostly sunny) garden is one that receives five to six hours of direct sun during the day. When it states that a plant does well in shade it normally means this type of shade.

Shady Perennials care Shady gardens need a little extra thought and care if we want a beautiful outcome. The main thing to be clear is that while some plants survive in a dry shady location, few if any plants can thrive in these conditions.

Partial shade • Open or medium shade is found under the canopy of trees. This area will be out of the sun for four or five of the day's brightest hours, but receive sun early or late in the day. Most shade gardens fall into this category.

• Ensure plants have adequate water - keep an eye on soil moisture and don’t just let it dry out. The plants will ‘drink’ some of it, it doesn’t just evaporate. Don’t forget! Use waste water if drought restrictions are in place - bathwater won’t hurt them, nor will dish water.

Plants that may grow in these two conditions well include Wild blue phlox, Astilbe, Foxglove and Japanese anemone. Full shade Full shade is cast by the thick, broad canopies of deciduous trees. Dense shade, the heaviest type, is the cool, evenly dark shadow on the floor of an evergreen grove or beside buildings that block light for most of the day. Hepatica, Celandine poppy, Heuchera, Foamflower and Bleeding Heart all accept full shade growing conditions.

breezemagazine 36

• You may have to apply around one and a half inches of water a week in a shady area with perennials in to keep it looking good. This is especially so if there are trees nearby which are providing the shade as they compete for the water. So there we have our starter guide to Perennials! There is much we can return to but why not get started now and build as we go forward - gardening is a ‘project’ after all - it doesn’t have an end point (that would spoil all the fun!). Get cracking on the planting as we get a little warmer (hopefully by now!) and as always with your gardening... enjoy!

YOUR MONTH AHEAD

ARIES [March 21st-April 20th] Although there may be set backs to future goals any obstacles are removed quickly. Mental and physical exhaustion is eliminated when finding peace and tranquillity away from the environment. Arguments are kept at bay where you feel they belong. Disappointment in others only proves you were right and the loss is theirs not yours. TAURUS [April 21st-May 20th] Unable to be in two places at once tension mounts and you find sorting matters out is not as easy as you thought. Finding the right solution proves difficult until you come up with an idea, which solves the problem once and for all. You enjoy time alone and find peace, gaining much in the way of a clear head to deal with the rest of the month.

GEMINI [May 21st-June 21st] May brings opportunities for you to make positive changes to an area of your life to which you have felt some disappointment. Coming up with new ideas meets the approval of loved ones, giving their full support. Helping younger members of the family brings satisfaction with a helping hand if and when. Odd jobs are completed.

breezemagazine 42

CANCER [June 22nd-July 23rd] Ready for a rest and a break of some kind you take yourself off to put yourself back on track mentally and physically. Taking no nonsense you prove your worth to those around away from home gaining the respect you rightly deserve. Temptation comes your way when seeing something you would like. Cautious you give much thought.

LEO [July 24th-August 23rd Overworked and in demand drives you to resolving issues in your life to which you felt were being ignored. Taking a step back you begin making changes, which are long overdue. Financial gain through hard work comes in at a time when least expected. Support from those close helps when emotions get the better of you. VIRGO [August 24th-September 23rd] Busy as ever you manage to secure some time for yourself during the month. Seeing eye to eye with another proves difficult especially when you are aware of their actions. Plans made for alterations in and around the home may well proceed during May. Being out and about with those you love eliminates tension and pressure.

By ANNE HARBOUR Registered Hypnotherapist. HPD. MNSHP. Member of The National Society of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy. Telephone: 07845 405835 LIBRA [September 24th-October 22nd] Slowing down is not an option for many of this birth sign. Firing on all 5 cylinders and with a schedule to match, mind you doesn’t burn your candle at both ends. End of the month life slows down and you are able to rest up getting that balance in your life. Making sure you are doing the right thing could be costly, but well worth it in the end.

CAPRICORN [December 23rd-January 20th] Meeting new and influential people comes at a time when needing direction. Taking stock of opportunities and making important decisions is easier than you thought. With lots to do and think about the month becomes somewhat challenging. Younger members of the family proof their worth with a day out family thoroughly enjoy.

SCORPIO [October 23rd-November 22nd] Dealing with matters of the heart becomes vital when in doubt. Clearing the air and compromising brings an end to any uncertainty. With a heavy schedule about to take place organisation as you discover is the key to success. Requests from family may come in at the wrong time but you manage to help out and gain success end of month.

AQUARIUS [January 21st-February 19th] With so much to do and little time to do it pressure mounts giving you less time for yourself. Getting through important paperwork won’t be easy but you manage to clear most allowing others to help out. Meeting up with someone you haven’t seen for a while and catching up on all whats happened makes a welcome change from routine.

SAGITTARIUS [November 23rd-December 22nd] Trying to cram everything into some days proves difficult. Commitments take over, with your life appearing to be on hold for a short time. Taking no nonsense you put your foot down with someone giving him or her an ultimatum, which works out well. Plans and arrangements are made for time away enhancing any skills you may have.

PISCES [February 20th-March 20th] Tired and ready for a change of scenery you look forward to some kind of break in the foreseeable future. Loved ones take care not to overload you with any concerns but your willing to step in if and when to help others when needed. Plans go out the window when realising you cannot complete those jobs in and around the home

br Counselling / Psychotherapy confusing terms Local leading psychotherapist Martin Smith seeks to try and help out over the confusion between the various terms and labels that exist around the world of psychological therapies. People often ask what the difference is between counselling and psychotherapy and terms like CBT, NLP, TA and a raft of other terms. For Martin the terms are of secondary importance to the goal of any therapeutic interventions. This should be to help people move on with their lives in a more productive and fulfilling way. If you are suffering from anxiety, stress, depression, or other issues linked to pressures of modern life, or haunted by past events or traumas the most important thing is to get help that literally helps you. The approach taken by therapists can vary a great deal but Martin has an important rule he tries to apply when working with any client, that is, you feel better when you leave a session than you did when you arrived and that each session builds on progress and focuses on helping you move forward whilst appreciating the difficulties you have been facing. A vital issue these days is that a therapist is flexible in approach and has a range of skills to help people move on effectively, drawing from a range of theories and techniques. This is Martin’s approach and if you want to move your life forward now, call Martin direct on 07 973 410 010 for an initial appointment or email him at itctherapy@aol.com for more information. In keeping with his flexible approach appointments are available during the day, evenings and weekends to suit your needs and commitments.
