A local hospice is looking for ladies to join them on a Moonlight Walk on 27 June.
It’s the fifth year Treetops Hospice has organised the ladies-only event which is a sponsored walk around Derby at night. Walkers raise money for the charity which provides end of life care for adults in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. This year the event starts at the University of Derby and there’s a choice of 5k or 10k routes. The first event was held in 2010 and since then 1,669 women have walked, raising a total of £179,706 for Treetops. Helen Percival, a Stapleford GP will have done all 5 walks. Helen says: “I often refer my patients to Treetops and can see how much it helps them. It gives them somewhere to go and provides extra support. It also provides much needed respite for their loved ones, as being a fulltime carer can be exhausting. Treetops give them the chance to do something for themselves and have a break.” Mary Rose, community fundraisers at Treetops, added: “Anyone can do the walk regardless of their fitness levels. I did the 10k route last week and if I can do it, anyone can! Get on board and support Treetops Hospice, let’s make this year a record breaking year.” Event Details: Date: Friday 27 June 2014 Start Time: 10pm Distance: 5k or 10k Venue: Start/Finish at University of Derby, Kedleston Road, Derby Registration: £12 to include a free T-shirt Entrants: Women only Register online at www.treetopshospice.org.uk/moonlight or phone 0115 949 6930 The Moonlight Walk is a different colour every year, and these ladies are wearing the t-shirts from all five years. OLIVER! Performed by THE PEOPLE’S THEATRE COMPANY From 13th May 2014 until 18th May 2014 At the Nottingham Arts Theatre, George Street, Nottingham, NG1 3BE Music, book & lyrics by Lionel Bart based on the novel by Charles Dickens Director Maggie Andrew Musical Director David Hails The next musical venture for the Nottingham based People's Theatre Company is the much-loved musical Oliver! with director, Maggie Andrew, and musical directors, David Hails and Steve Williams. The theatre company is no stranger to producing big musicals, with Maggie Andrew recently directing the critically acclaimed productions of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat and The Sound Of Music at the Nottingham Arts Theatre during 2013. They are confident that this next musical extravaganza Oliver! will be
just as big a success and provide the opportunity for Nottingham’s home-grown musical talent to showcase its ability. The Cast are a large team of youngsters of all ages to fill various roles and to give them the opportunity to perform on stage alongside the adult company, and Maggie said “we wanted this to be a truly community based production and give opportunities for all to get involved.” Katie Inglis is “Nancy”, in her first musical leading role. Katie studied drama at University gaining her degree at De Montfort, Leicester. She was the principle boy in The People’s Theatre Company’s production of “Sleeping Beauty” which has been nominated for a National Operatic and Dramatic Association Award for Best Pantomime, so we have our fingers crossed. Katie has always wanted to play the part of Nancy from a very early age and used to sing the songs as a young girl. She is living her dream. Katie has been developing her talent through coaching lessons which have boosted her confidence and Katie says that she is really enjoying rehearsals and has made lots of friends from the gang of orphans, street urchins, street sellers, Bullseye and the usual suspects. The two Olivers (played by Lennon Bradley and Jacob Simpson) are very versatile, they provide an air of innocence, display the mannerisms of a child who is lonely and lost, and can portray the inner strength and determination required in order for their character to survive. Oliver, as we know from the story written by Charles Dickens, is a survivor. Oliver spends time with Fagin, Bill Sykes and his new best friend the artful Dodger and learns how to pick a pocket or two! Aware of what is right and wrong Oliver is forced to fit in and conform until he can find an opportunity to escape under the protection of Nancy, who looks out for him. Gullible, Oliver is easily manipulated, but his character and story captures people's hearts." To book tickets contact the Nottingham Arts Theatre Box Office on 0115 9476096 during office hours, buy online at www.nottingham-theatre.co.uk purchase them from the Nottingham Tourism Centre on Smithy Row off Market Square.

CONSIDERING A CONSERVATORY?
breeze promotion
Looking for more space? An expert at Trent Valley Windows gives some pointers on what decisions you need to make. All of our conservatories are bespoke designed for you so you can pretty much have anything you want. Things to consider: What do you want to use the conservatory for? Remember it’s probably more important to get the internal look and feel right as that’s the part you’re looking at when using your new conservatory. You very rarely spend time admiring your conservatory from the garden. Your flooring and heating choices go hand in hand, if you’re thinking about underfloor heating this works best with a tiled floor as they hold the heat better than a carpet or laminate. Making your conservatory a useable space year round One of the most common complaints about old conservatories was that they were only comfortable to use for ½ the year. With design and technology improvements in recent years we can build a conservatory that is as thermally efficient as a traditional single storey extension. Added extra’s for the wow factor Add a ceiling pelmet, an insulated pelmet which transforms the inside of your conservatory into an orangery style extension. This real room feel means more styling and furnishing options and the perimeter ceiling is perfect for down lights. Carefully chosen colours can transform the look of your new conservatory, we offer a wide range of standard and bespoke colours. Make the floor a feature with some stunning porcelain tiles, many have matching outdoor tiles to run the floor seamlessly from a conservatory onto a patio. Create a beautiful panoramic effect with full width bi-folding patio doors to open up your new conservatory into the garden.

hearing dogs
Hearing Dogs are trained to alert deaf recipients to important sounds and danger signals that most of us take for granted while also providing vital companionship and emotional support. National charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People would like to tell you more about this life changing work by sending a local speaker to visit your clubs, school or community group.
Lucy Ward, Community Fundraising Manager says ‘We have a dedicated network of volunteers who are able to give an interesting and emotive insight into how hearing dogs makes such a difference to the lives of deaf people and how groups and individuals can help us in our work. For more information or to arrange for one of our Speakers to come and talk to your group please contact Lucy Ward on 01759 322255 or lucy.ward@hearingdogs.org.uk or visit www.hearingdogs.org.uk.
More than deafness, loss of hearing can lead to stress, isolation and loneliness. A Hearing Dog can help to overcome these and change the life of a deaf person for the better. The charity does not receive any government funding and relies on the support of individuals, groups and businesses to help fund its life-changing work. There are currently around 800 working hearing dogs assisting the lives of severely and profoundly deaf people across the UK. Hearing Dogs are easily recognisable by their distinctive burgundy jackets and lead slips providing visibility to an otherwise largely invisible disability, giving confidence to their recipients when in public.

the big tree plant The title comes from a national project that is funding Big Trees in Cities and, in particular, replacement trees in streets. It was brought to the attention of Beeston & District Civic Society (and residents of Grove Court) by Broxtowe Borough Council after they had complained about the ‘missing’ highway trees in Beeston, and they agreed to work jointly on finding ‘missing tree sites’. “We were supported by the local press and we had a great response in terms of sites suggested and people willing to be ‘TreeGuardians’. Unfortunately, some of the suggested sites were not suitable, and some privately owned. The result was that in March 2013 seven trees were planted along Devonshire Ave, Beeston, and in the grass verge at the junction of Bramcote Road and Glebe Street, with local residents willing to be ‘Tree-Guardians’, watering the plants when needed and generally keeping their eye on them. The trees were supplied and planted by Nottinghamshire County Council who are responsible for maintaining street trees in the Borough”.
breezemagazine 20
In summer 2013, Tim Crawford (Parks and Environment Manager), at Broxtowe Borough Council, suggested that they look at sites suggested in Chilwell by Councillor Joan Briggs and other local residents. “We met with members of the Parks team to look at each of the sites. Once again they were checked for nearby vegetation and underground utilities. The result was that Broxtowe Borough Council agreed to go ahead and plant trees on five sites in their ownership.”. The sites are:Aldene Court - 2 Red Oak trees planted in the large round area. Grove Court Central Ave - on the grass verge near the entrance to building - 2 Rowan (Golden Wonder). Wheatgrass Road - near Pearson Close – 3 Cherry trees Rathvale Court - on the grassy area between the Court and Field Lane - 2 Cherry trees Welbank Close – grassy area off Field Lane - 5 Rowan, 3 yellow and 2 red.
“We are very grateful to the local residents, who have volunteered to be ‘Tree-Guardians’, and who will keep their eye on the trees and water them, especially if there is a drought in summer. If you are aware of a site near you, which would be enhanced by one or more trees, then please let us know. We will then meet again with the Parks team to investigate if the ideas are possible”. Broxtowe Borough Council is very keen to support the initiative as they work towards their target of planting 100,000 new trees in the Borough by 2016. To date just under 65,000 trees have been planted.

So after an appointment with my GP where we discussed my health, it was suggested that through the "Healthy Change" I joined a slimming world group. At the group l was given a warm and friendly welcome, where food optimising was explained to me. I was amazed at the amount of food l could eat and still loose weight. I never feel hungry eat lots of fresh meat and fish with slimming word chips or wedges with lots of healthy salad or vegetables. When l feel like a treat l have my slimming world syns to fall back on. The chocolate caramel HiFi bar is a favourite to use as a healthy extra or a syn, or l can have a meringue nest over flowing with fresh fruit and yogurt for a lovely desert so l don't feel deprived. No food is banned it's not like being on a diet, its just a healthy way of eating for life. I always stay to my image therapy where we discuss food and menu ideas as a group for the week ahead. calling all brownies! As part of the celebrations to mark their 100th anniversary, members of Brownie units in Beeston, Toton, Attenborough and Chilwell are interviewing former Brownies of all ages to create an archive of memories and anecdotes. ‘Were you a Brownie? If so, our team of crack Brownie reporters want to hear your stories!’ says Tonya Machin of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s Beeston Division, who is coordinating the project. The interviews will be transcribed and available for the public to view during Heritage Open Days (11-14 Sept), when local Guide, Brownie and Rainbow Units will have a special display at Bartons on High Road in Chilwell. ‘If you think Brownies is all brown bobble hats and making tea, then think again!’ urges Tonya. ‘Today’s Brownies are tackling a huge array of challenges to celebrate the centenary, from adventurous day trips and sleepovers in unusual places to the Big Brownie Birthday Challenge, where girls are encouraged to make their own decisions, learn new skills and, of course, have lots of fun.’ Former Brownies from any era who would like to contribute to Beeston Brownies’ Heritage project are invited to contact Tonya Machin via ggbeeston@virginmedia.com or to talk to Girlguiding Leaders at the Beeston Carnival in Broadgate Park on 12 July. IT’S A BUG’S LIFE
breeze promotion
Now that summer has arrived there is a huge increase in the infestations of dogs and cats with fleas, worms ticks and mites. All of these parasites are unpleasant and potentially fatal to their unfortunate host. In fact they can also be very dangerous to the people living with the dog or cat that the bugs are making their home. To make matters worse there are many unsuitable flea and worm products that are available. Pet owners trying to protect their pets from these harmful parasites can often spend large amounts of money on products that are essentially useless. The solution is to talk to an expert. Churchcroft Vets know the benefits and pitfalls of all the available flea controls. This month, to help you to protect your dog or cat and yourself, Churchcroft are offering free parasite consultations and a whopping 25% off purchases of 6 months of parasite controls until July. During your free parasite consultation, George or Jon (the Churchcroft Vets) will discuss your pet’s lifestyle and risks and work with you to decide on the most suitable parasite control to keep your pet and those that live with them in good health. They will then make sure that you know how and when to use it, ensuring you get maximum value out of your purchase. George, head vet at Churchcroft says “There is a lot of confusion amongst the general public about fleas and worms and the best ways to control them. We see a lot of cases of parasites causing disease where, had the owners been better informed, the problem could have been avoided”. Call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and ask for a Free Parasite Consultation and /or your 25% discount. It could be the best investment you will make this summer.

Changes in the road ahead All drivers of commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes need to obtain their Driver CPC Qualification Card (DQC) by 9th September 2014. If they have not obtained their card by this date they cannot drive professionally, and could be fined up to £1,000 if they do.
Drivers can attend courses one day at a time or the full week. However time is running out, so you need to book as soon as you can. For free advice, just call Pride between 9:00 and 17:00hrs Monday to Friday.
Pride Training was one of the very first Approved Training Centres and is based here in Long Eaton. As well as providing Driver CPC training to local drivers, they design and develop Driver CPC training material for large organisations, for example Aldi, The Co-op, and Northgate Vehicle Hire, as well as other training providers. They can travel to the clients premises if they have a large enough group. The Driver CPC syllabus covers all aspects of a professional drivers role, from driving safely and economically to working with others. Pride has a core of ten 3.5 hrs Approved Modules to cover the full syllabus. Two of these modules are delivered within the compulsory 7 hrs training period and drivers have to attend five sessions to meet the requirement of 35 hrs approved training. Once they have completed their training, they will receive their Driver’s Qualification Card, which must be carried with them whenever they drive professionally. There is no test at the end of the session, however Pride’s very interactive training style ensures that drivers get the most from their training. The staff at Pride fully appreciate that not everyone looks forward to this compulsory training, so they ensure that the training they provide is relative, engaging, interesting and fun.
“Our aim is to provide both PCV and LGV operators with different options to suit their training and operational need. Whether you need a training provider to provide the Driver CPC Training, or you have aspiration to setup your own approved training centre, we are here to help.” says Steve Morison. Steve, who has over thirty five years training, development and testing experience, leads the team at Pride which is unique. Steve was the Training Manager for the Driving Standards Agency, as well as one of the headquarters quality control team. The Team includes highly experienced and qualified trainers, as well as administration staff who are fully conversant with the Driver CPC requirements.
The Pride Training ethos
Pride is located close to Junction 25 (M1) at Mohan Business Centre, Cooper Suite, Tamworth Road, Long Eaton, NG10 1BE

Pastures greener Lawns are commonly used to play on, socialise on and generally are designed to be used as a practical surface in the garden. So many times though, they are laid badly. If you ever see a road being constructed then you will appreciate how little the top surface layer is compared to what’s underneath. Lawns bear some comparison as what is underneath provides not just essential nutrients & water but the mechanical structure to keep the lawn flat and allow adequate drainage in times of heavy rain. You will need: • Rolls of turf (from a good supplier) • gravel/back fill (optional in some cases) • Heavy roller (water filled ones are ok) • Heavy duty wheelbarrow • Old long kitchen knife/non serrated • Long plank/floorboard section (1.5m) We’ll assume you are rolling ready grown turf as it’s quickest.
breezemagazine 34
Measure the length and width of the area in cm and multiply to get the square area and convert to metres by dividing by a hundred. Make sure you add on five percent for wastage. Lift any existing grass with a sharp spade after a downpour. You can retain this and use it as loam after about a year so store it somewhere in the garden out of sight. Preparation is key to a good result if, after a downpour, your area retains a lot of surface water then you have no choice but to dig down at least 60cm and remove this soggy/clay type soil. You then backfill using small rubble or gravel. Level/landscape with a rake. Flatten this gravel well using a heavy roller (you can hire or buy plastic ones you fill with water so are only heavy when filled which is easier to transport). You should now have a nice even surface (it may have a slight slope up to any raised areas you wish to butt up to but not too steep). The aim is to have either a level or gently sloping surface (where needed) and a flat, even surface of compressed hardcore. Using string, lay a line across from one side to the other (attach to two old bricks) and
do the same on the other length so they cross over. Use these as your guide when putting the topsoil down and rake it so it is level with these strings. Remember to go slightly higher (about 1cm) when butting up to paving etc so your mower won’t catch on the hard surface). Once your topsoil has been levelled with the rake you can ‘tamp’ it down using a flat piece of wood like a section of old floorboard and put your weight on it a section at a time. (continues...)

breezegardening (...continued)
Gently rake the top of the soil to soften the surface again as it will be compacted. Starting in one corner start unrolling the turf. If the corner is not a straight edge then use your string as a reference to work to. Where you have a rounded edge you must place the turf overlapping any curved areas so you can trim back to them with your kitchen knife. When you join two rolls together then lift the edges and tuck them together so that you can’t get any gaps as the lawn dries before it fully knits. Once the lawn roll is down you can tamp is slightly to clear out any air and lay it flat. Use your floorboard or plank to rest your knees on as you lay subsequent turf so that you don’t dig in. Once it’s all down give it a good water and maintain this everyday (if it doesn’t rain heavily) to help bed it in for the first few weeks. Of course, for larger areas you could always employ the services of a landscape gardener as it can be quite hard work and you are then able to sit back and enjoy the results the easy way! To do this month • Weeding: your flowerbeds to keep all that soil goodness going to your lovely colourful flowers. If you want a wild area then create one for nature where you aren’t planting out decorative flowers. • Harden off: any half hardy plants by leaving outside during the day and bring them back under cover in the evenings before the temperature drops. • Water & feed: your container plants - it’s all systems go for plants at this time of year so give them the fuel they need! Top up with liquid feed every two weeks or so. Refresh your year round pot plants with a new top layer of compost & feed them. • Pests: Keep an eye out for pests & diseases as these start to wriggle and come alive around this time too!
breezemagazine 36
• Plant maintenance: divide hostas as they come back to growth. • Let your dafodil and other spring bulbs die down naturally so they absorb the goodness for next year - don’t tidy these up by cutting! • Containerised appletrees: make sure they get watered and not drought stressed as we warm up. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser. In the ground ones tend to be alright as they can grow roots downwards but keep weeds clear and check for pests such as aphids and caterpillars - spray if necessary. • Potatoes: earth up by building earth up to nearly the top of their stems. Halfway through your earthing up add around 10g per metre of fertiliser such as Growmore or similar between the rows. Make sure you water any containerised potatoes as, again, there is less water held naturally as compared to the ground. There’s till time to plant maincrop potatoes for those of you who didn’t take up on the challenge earlier in the year! Come on - get planting! As always, keep your gardening active and make it yours - Enjoy!

breeze appeal Teams race to sign up for Nottingham dragon boat spectacular! Why don’t you? Companies, clubs and organisations from across the East Midlands are getting their teams together and signing up to take part in the sixth Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge. This hugely popular annual event takes place on Sunday 3rd August in aid of Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People and has fast become one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the local and regional events calendar. A large proportion of the entries are new teams each year and, as technique and timing are more likely to win the day than physical prowess, everyone has an even chance. Carol Lester, Director of Challenge organisers, Gable Events, explains, “The beauty of dragon boat racing is that it’s not reliant on brute strength. The key to success is team work, timing and the ability to listen to your helm’s instructions, failure to do so could result in an early bath! There’s nothing more amusing than to see a crew of super-confident burley builders come unstuck against a mixed crew of IT consultants! Organisation and team work will be triumphant every time. So even if you don’t have the arms of Thor or the athletic prowess of Victoria Pendleton, fear not as anyone can succeed in Dragon Boat Racing, which is why this event is so appealing to companies looking for a fun way to motivate staff and strengthen team spirit”. With more than one prize on offer there really is something for every team to aim for. Trophies will be presented to the winning crew, the top mixed crew (minimum 5 ladies), the ‘best dressed’ crew and the crew raising the most money for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. The top fundraisers for Rainbows will also receive a special meal kindly donated by The Oriental Pearl Chinese restaurant, based in West Bridgford, who plan to enter a team into the Challenge. Exciting, colourful and great fun, no previous experience is required to enter a team of up to 11 people into the event. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. The Challenge promises a fantastic day for competitors and spectators alike with all
the attractions of the Riverside Festival to enjoy including a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world. By taking part in the Dragon Boat Challenge to raise money for Rainbows, the teams will be part of something really special that brings care and happiness to those who are facing the most extraordinary challenges. Katie Baxter, Events Manager at Rainbows, adds, “Rainbows has little guaranteed funding so events such as these help us to keep our doors open. Sadly all the children and young people who use Rainbows have life shortening illnesses but with support, we can be there for them and those that love them the most.” To make sure your company, club or group of friends is on the start line on Sunday 3rd August please call Gable Events on 01780 470718 or visit the Dragon Boat Challenge website at www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/nottingham
