Matt Church was born and grew up in Beeston Rylands. After leaving the local sixth form decided to start a plumbing and gas apprenticeship. Whilst undertaking a four year City and guilds course at Basford Hall, he found that he had a passion for his chosen career and won awards to become the Bpec East Midlands Plumber of the year, coming runner up in the national final. This meant he then had the privilege of welding the lead time capsule buried in Nottingham Market Square. Matt learnt his trade at a local building firm, training for there for five years. After completing his apprenticeship was made redundant which lead to him working for a well known energy provider where he gained a wealth of experience, repairing boilers and heating systems. Whilst providing excellent customer service he became engineer of the year finalist in 2009. Starting up his own business has always been something Matt wanted to do. Now, having the opportunity he is looking forward to each day being different. Meeting new challenges and people in the process. “I have always prided myself on doing the best job I can. Therefore hoping that by providing a service of value and quality I can create a successful business my young children will be proud of” says Matt. The Fireplace & Stove Shop is owned and run by Adam Gregg. Born and bred in Bramcote and Wollaton he knows lives in Chilwell. “I had always wanted to follow in my Dad’s footsteps and own my own business ever since I can remember, but knew I needed to find something I would enjoy. I worked for the fireplace distribution business my Dad had started and now my Uncle owned since leaving school. I had done everything within the business and spent the last four years as the first and only sales manager the company had employed and in that time even through the recession seen fantastic growth in sales. As I got older I knew I was ready for the challenge of owning my own business so started looking for premises to set up a dedicated multi-fuel stove and fireplace retailer in the local area. When I found the shop down on Queens Road, Beeston I knew the potential was there to create a chic shop that felt warm and homely and would create the ideal setting for my showroom! Since opening the doors I have enjoyed every minute and have been very pleased with the responses from the customers through the door. Please come down and take a look at the fires, fireplaces, stoves and accessories we have on offer and you’ll receive the second to none service I strive to achieve” Fireplace & Stove Shop 121 Queens Road Beeston Tel: 0115 849 9909

All the staff at Hallams raised awareness for the raffle by wearing pink fancy dress on Friday, which was the breast cancer campaigns national 'wear it pink' day. Helium balloons were generously donated to decorate the shop. A total of ÂŁ1036 was raised by 4pm Friday. LET YOUR HOME MAKE YOU MONEY Solar PV or ‘Photo Voltaic’ panels are like little electricity generators on your roof, they capture the sun light and turn it in to electricity which you can use or sell back to the electricity company. Feed in tariffs are payments of 43.3p/KWh (index linked) or unit of electricity generated on your roof. You are then free to use it cutting your electricity bill or sell it back to the electricity company, so you are getting paid twice. This sounds too good to be true but the government have introduced these measures in order to attract large numbers of people across the country to install their own generators (solar pv) and help them meet their climate change targets. These payments are government guaranteed for the next twenty five years. • Start reducing your electricity bills immediately • Make you 43.3p per unit up to 3’400 Kwh (units) per year. * • The electricity you do not use goes into the national grid and you are paid approximately 3.1p per unit. • You also do not have to pay for electricity you have produced so there is a saving of another £250 per year on your electricity bill.* • A total saving of up to £1’760 per year.* • A reduction of CO2 produced by this clean green solar system by approximately 30 tonnes over 25 years. *(Dependant on the size of system and orientation)

DON’T SHIVER THIS WINTER, PUT A BLANKET ON YOUR HOUSE With the soaring cost of energy sapping more and more of our available resources it makes sense to invest in measures to help conserve heat and reduce the cost of staying warm. And now under a new Government initiative requiring the major energy suppliers to reduce levels of domestic CO2 emissions, the cost to the householder, has just fallen through the floor. It could even be free. One of the most important measures we can take is to properly insulate the loft space since, according to estimates a whopping 25% of the heat generated in a house is lost straight through the roof when adequate insulation is not fitted. Fortunately help is at hand for all households. Nottingham based Framework UK in association with GSI Carbon Solutions is helping to deliver the latest government initiative to help reduce carbon emissions. By supplying and fitting loft insulation and arranging Cavity Wall Insulation to meet the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT), Frameworks UK can access funding which is available for many households to benefit from completely free supply and installation. Many others are eligible for huge discounts on materials (cheaper than DIY) and free installation. Congratulations to the hundreds of satisfied customers who have already taken up this remarkable free offer and now have fully insulated loft spaces. “Readers will probably be aware of the recent government decision to axe funding for solar installations and in light of current policy decisions we recommend that you act quickly to take advantage of this opportunity whilst it lasts”. Don’t miss out on this remarkable opportunity for free insulation, contact David at Framework and arrange to get your share now. Tel: 07801 814 209

on breeze what’s Pollyanna’s English Country Garden Exhibition Pollyanna Pickering is widely recognised as one of Europe’s foremost wildlife artists. Driven by the beauty and intricacy of the wilderness, she is renowned for her travels into some of the most remote and inhospitable parts of the world, where she studies and paints endangered species in their increasingly fragile habitats. However she continues to draw inspiration from the beauty of the British isles, and especially the Peak District of Derbyshire, where she has made her home, and every winter Pollyanna opens her private gallery for an exhibition inspired by her love of British Wildlife. Between 19th November – 4th December visitors to the gallery at Brookvale House Oaker, Matlock, Derbyshire, (AA Signposted) will be able to view over fifty new paintings of the wildlife which can be found in an English Country Garden. Many of the birds and animals featured in the paintings were cared for by Pollyanna in the animal sanctuary she ran for fifteen years. The lavishly illustrated book 'A Brush with Wildlife', which will be available throughout the exhibition, is filled with anecdotes of the trials and tribulations of a wildlife artist whose life and home is taken over by a succession of wild creatures and provides a fascinating insight into the inspiration behind Pollyanna's paintings. The exhibition will also see the exclusive launch of new limited edition prints of British Wildlife. Visitors will be able to browse at leisure through the latest additions to Pollyanna's extensive ranges of greetings cards and fine art prints, and a wide variety of gift ware featuring her work, including stationery, china mugs, cross stitch kits, signed sets of her postage stamps issued in Africa, and first day covers for the Royal Mail alongside an exclusive display of the latest selection of gift ware commissioned by Harrods. There will be over 150 Christmas card designs to choose from, including the latest charity cards designed by Pollyanna for Guide dogs for the Blind, the RSPCA, Cats Protection League, The Wildlife Trust, and Blue Cross among many others. Six new fine art calendars of her work will be available for 2012, along with a new range of eco-friendly wrapping paper and cards, and even Christmas decorations featuring her designs!
breezemagazine 12
Ten percent of all sales at the event will raise funds to build new aviaries at the Secret World wildlife hospital, while funds raised by the Prize Draw for an original painting will support The Badger Trust, of which Pollyanna is patron. Also on exhibition for the first time will be the dramatic painting which last month secured Pollyanna the 'Environmental Concern' Award in the 2011 Wildlife Artist of the Year awards. “It was wonderful to have this aspect of my work recognised in these prestigious awards” Pollyanna
commented “Especially as this year’s exhibition features paintings of wildlife like hedgehogs and sparrows which we all take for granted in our gardens – but which are becoming increasingly endangered.” In her new role as Global Ambassador for Australian charity Wildlife Warriors, Pollyanna has just launched an international writing competition for children. Full details will be available during the exhibition – and on the web site at www.pollyannapickering.co.uk

The UK’s hottest new boy band, One Direction, took time out of their busy schedule to visit Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People on Friday 28th November as part of the BBC’s One Show Children in Need programming. The band turned up at Rainbows to meet the children, young people and their families and treated them to an acappella rendition of their number one hit ‘That’s What Makes You Beautiful’. They then spent time meeting everyone who had turned up for this special surprise visit. One Direction’s visit to the local children’s hospice who are supported by BBC Children in Need was filmed as part of the charity’s appearance on BBC1’s The One Show aired on the 3rd November. Presenter Carrie Grant held interviews at Rainbows before the big surprise. These interviews help to explain the desperate need for a charity like Rainbows and give some insight into support BBC Children in Need gives the Hospice.. One Direction said: “The work Children in Need do with projects like Rainbows Hospice is so important to these children and their families. We have grown up with Children in Need and this was the perfect chance for us to show our support. With two weeks to go we hope the public will dig deep and give generously"

Spokesman for Rainbows, Scott Lea said: “Having a visit from such a famous band was absolutely fantastic. And keeping it a secret was probably the hardest thing we’ve done in a long time! All the boys were brilliant, they really got stuck in with meeting everyone, having their photos taken and signing autographs. Everyone who came to see them had a huge smile and took away a lasting and happy memory. It really did mean the world to us.” Photos of the event can be seen on the Rainbows Flickr page available through their website www.rainbows.co.uk.
Rainbows first opened its doors in 1994 and in April, 1995 HRH Prince of Wales officially opened the Hospice, which was founded by Gail and Harry Moore whose daughter, Laura, died of Leukaemia in 1989. Since then hundreds of life-limited children, their families, siblings, relatives and friends from across the East Midlands have been cared for and supported by the hospice. They come to visit for specialist respite, palliative and end-of-life care. Each child receives one-to-one care around the clock from a highly skilled team of children's nurses supported by doctors experienced in pediatric palliative and end of life care. www.rainbows.co.uk

Last month we looked at ways to deal with the onset of Winter and creative ideas to battle back with something to enjoy and work at even though many plants (and some animals!) start the process of shutting down for next three to four months. Well here we are and having enjoyed a lovely season of unusually mild and benign weather we have every reason to still expect the season to bite somewhat harder than it has done so far. Which leaves us with a greater reliance on either very hardy plant varieties and greenhouse cultivation when it comes to growing anything in the garden itself. It is possible to grow nearly all types of plants during this season. Winter greenhouse crops are protected from extreme weather in your greenhouse. Whilst some tropical fruits can be grown in winter they require extreme heat all year round - which is an extra expense and not for the feint hearted! This is the reason why greenhouse fruits are more expensive during and just after winter. Most leafy and root vegetables will still do well though, without too much heat if you take proper care. Grow them in containers or raised grow beds. This reduces the transfer of the cold from the ground and makes it easier to move your crops if freezing looks on the books (as it certainly did last year with unheated greenhouses dropping down to minus eight on some nights!). As well as containers, some gardeners add extra insulation to their greenhouse to help prevent heat loss. Use plastic to surround the soil to help keep frost at bay. You can also surround any vents with plastic sheeting to further reduce heat loss. Some of the plants that do very well in the
gardening winter greenhouse without costing a fortune in heating are Kale, carrots, radish, lettuce, Swiss chard or any other plants that are not susceptible to frost. A greenhouse winter vegetable garden can keep the cold off the winter hardy crops allowing a plentiful harvest even during the winter - and a lovely way to ‘keep something going’ for these months. Whatever your choice of winter crops, you will often need more water than usual as there is no natural rainfall of course. Ensure that your water level does not leave the roots clogged - just enough without drowning them. The right amount of water is just as important in the winter as it is in the other seasons. There is one crop that can be started now in an unheated greenhouse and which can also be very educational too. Garlic is one of the few vegetables grown today that almost never sets seed, so it actually increases by vegetative propagation. Regular gardeners will be familiar with the process, and it’s a great way to teach the kids being not too difficult a plant to start off and grow. You need to buy a bulb of what is referred to as ‘seed garlic’ from a garden centre or supplier, which is disease free and selected for good garden performance. Then you split this bulb into its individual cloves. During growth, each clove fattens and divides under its soft and slightly papery looking skin with tall leaves being produced at the same time. The leaves will eventually die back and the result is a new fat bulb of many cloves, which you can use in cooking and for many of the myriad uses that garlic is put to today as the ‘wonder food’ it has become! The process of growth continues - you just harvest as and when. With a bit of planning, your winter greenhouse can be a very enjoyable place to spend some spare time with that feeling of being ‘semi outside’ when we are in the darkest depths of winter but in the sheltered space that the greenhouse is. Who knows, your efforts in the greenhouse could even become a profitable enterprise for you!

No greenhouse? - read on! But what if you don’t have a greenhouse? Well, another good way to keep your gardening interests alive (and it’s good for kids to get involved with as well) is to create and maintain an indoors herb garden. They smell lovely and really help stave off the feeling that all is ‘dead’ in winter. Some good choices to grow indoors in the winter include rosemary, bay, oregano, marjoram, parsley, scented geranium, chives, mint, winter savoury and sage. The best way to start off your herbs is to either buy plants or dig up and transplant them from your garden outside.
Any container with good drainage will suffice to plant into, with Terra cotta pots an especially good choice, since the clay allows moisture out so they ‘breathe’. Use high quality potting soil to get healthy herbs growing nicely. Herbs love a sunny window (don’t we all in Winter!) in which to bask in as much UV as they can possible get in these shorter days. Most herbs need at least six hours' direct sunlight, plus an additional six to eight hours of indirect light. You can supplement their needs with artificial lights. Specific ones designed for the purpose are available (aquarium shops stock UV type lights actually so it may be worth enquiring there), but plain fluorescent lights will do the job, albeit not quite as effectively. Rotate your herbs every few days so that each side gets adequate light. Herbs like daytime temperatures around 70 degrees Fahrenheit and night-time temperatures closer to 55. Water your herbs every two to four days the soil should remain evenly damp but not too wet.
gardening Fertilise only sparingly. ‘Hungry’ herbs tend to have more flavourful leaves. A single application of fertiliser or plant food should be enough to get them through the winter. Remove any yellow leaves so that the plant doesn't waste any energy maintaining them. For maximum flavour, do not allow herbs to flower - pinch out any buds that show. Keep using your herbs regularly - this will encourage your herbs to continue to grow more leaves, ensuring that you will have a supply of fresh herbs all through the winter. Don’t be put off growing some herbs just give it a go - enjoy the process of trying to tease the best out of them, whether with a bit of extra UV lighting from an old strip light (or maybe that old aquarium light you never got round to throwing away?) or just plain old positioning where the sun is best. So, as we settle in towards the winter season and await the festive rush, let’s continue onward with our journey and enjoy the hobby of gardening as a real antidote to all that darkness and cold here’s to the Winter gardener, enjoy!

Is it time you replace your boiler? It doesn’t have to be in such a state that it has ‘steam coming out of its ears’ as it struggles with the descending temperatures of Winter to warrant a replacement - find out more with BathTime, who have been installing boilers for over nine years. There is no set time as to how long your boiler may last as many factors can weigh in to the equation from how often it has been serviced to the basic robustness of the design. What you can be sure of though is that if your existing boiler is more than around ten years old it will probably not be giving you the best return in providing the most heat for the least money. To put it simply, boilers have been getting far more efficient over the past ten years. Jon Malone, who runs BathTime on Wollaton Road in Beeston, has seen how much the trade has changed over the past nine years he has been involved with installation. “I would say that the most important aspect of boiler design today is the reliability factor. This is due to the vast improvements there have been in newer technology which includes heat plate transfer and condensing heat scavengers” Explains Jon. He adds that in working with the newer designs of boiler it is important to spot the pitfalls at installation and to check that the new unit will work reliably in what in many instances will be a system with older pipework. “We come across all circumstances and have built up a knowledge

base which helps us assess and forestall any problems as we replace an old boiler with a brand new one”. Part of that service is offering a free Magna-Clean device which is installed at no extra cost to the customer. Once installed this small piece of equipment filters out any harmful deposits which may be dislodged during the time the heating system is on and pumping water around the pipes and radiators - it uses no extra power and works 24/7 to keep your new boiler safe from these harmful deposits. “We are proud of this free service as it enhances the quality of our boiler installations” adds Jon. Katelyn Severn, 18, from Bramcote qualified for the Royal Academy of Dance Genee International Ballet Competition by passing her RAD Advanced 2 examination with Distinction (81%) in July 2011. It was held in Cape Town, South Africa from 29th September to 9th October 2011. Breeze finds out more... The Genee competition brings together young ballet dancers (aged 15-19) to be coached and judged by world-wide renowned choreographers and ballet company directors in a two-week competition. Candidates had to learn two classical ballet variations in advance of the competition but also were taught a completely new commissioned dance in just five days. The competition prizes are awarded as Gold, Silver and Bronze medals - if the standards are achieved. Katelyn was one of four UK entrants who all travelled from Scotland where they are training as part of their BA degree course in Classical Ballet. Other entrants came from the USA, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Africa, Israel, China, Japan, Spain and Cyprus. They performed in a professional theatre, Artscape, in central Cape Town to packed audiences. It is the pinnacle of a young dancer's training to be part of the Genee and winning recognition in the competition will almost certainly lead to a professional engagement in any international ballet company. The Genee is known as 'the friendly competition' as all candidates live together and train together for two weeks prior to the finalists being chosen. Cape Town Tourism office kindly sponsored part of the competition and the candidates had several cultural visits and opportunities to enjoy the city. Those candidates who were semi-finalists (including Katelyn) who did not make it to the final had a day off to sightsee. They were taken to Table Mountain by cable-car (it stands 1067 metres high) and some of them posed in their ballet tutus at the edge of the mountain ridges to the delight of passing tourists. Cape Town City is lobbying to have Table Mountain recognised as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature and the attached pictures are being featured on their official tourism website. Katelyn is the second dancer in line in the

black and white photo. In the large group photo she is sitting in the forefront, wearing a beige tutu. The competition results gave Bronze medals to two South African candidates (one boy, one girl) and Silver medals to one Chinese and one Japanese girl and Silver also to a Chinese boy. An Australian boy and a Canadian girl were offered contracts with Cape Town City ballet and the South African ballet company. No Gold medals were awarded this year. The UK finalist did not get a medal, but performed with credit. Katelyn thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and gave a most professional set of performances. She continues to train in Scotland and will be given a featured role in the ballet school's next production, 'Swan Lake'. She will be listing her success on her CV when she graduates and starts looking for work in a ballet company and it will certainly impress prospective future employers. Breeze wishes her every success in the future.
