challenging behaviour... Is your child’s over-active behaviour leaving you feeling out of control?
That’s exactly how one local mum felt before taking part in an innovative research project currently offering support to Nottinghamshire parents with active preschoolers. “I have an incredibly energetic little boy,” says Ruth Greene, who recently took part in a parent programme being offered through the University of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS trust. “Adam is always on the go and quite destructive really. It was quite a disruptive situation and really upsetting the family balance. I just felt out of control.” As part of the COPPI research study at the University of Nottingham Ruth joined a free12 week parenting programme. In sessions of around an hour each week she explored tried and tested techniques for tackling challenging behaviours in over-active children who may be constantly on the go, fidgeting and wriggling, not listening and not concentrating. Now, having finished the programme she’s pleased to Pictured, The COPPI Research team (Joanna Lockwood, Dr Elvira Perez, Prof David Daley, Anannya Chatterjee) have taken part. “I’ve regained my confidence in parenting. Local Care Would you like to make a difference?……… Home Instead are delighted to have been revealed as England’s leading home care provider in a report from the UK’s leading healthcare information specialist, Laing & Buisson. The report, Laing & Buisson’s Care Compliance Monitor, includes headline data from Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection reports and presents a digested view of providers’ performance. “We are proud of our success and the fact that more and more people trust us with their support and care, or that of their relatives. We know that our ability to deliver consistent and person centred care is due to the fact that we have a passionate, committed and caring team of CAREGivers. We are looking for CAREGivers who can help us to assist people with non medical services including Companionship, Home Help and Personal Care in their own home. “If you are dedicated, have a caring and compassionate nature and a genuine desire to work in an environment where you will be helping others then please get in touch. One of our CAREGivers was r e c e n t l y interviewed as part of a careers recruitment programme. When asked about the role, Katie who is 26, said; “I have regular clients and depending on my availability I work 20-24 hours a week, this is perfect for me as I have young children and I can fit work around them. Twice a week I take a lady who is 86 shopping, she loves going out and looking around the shops. Without me to assist her she wouldn’t be able to do that” Katie also said; “If you are thinking about becoming a CAREGiver I would say it is a very satisfying and rewarding job, it is not the job you first think it is, you walk away at the end of the week knowing you have made a difference to somebody’s life, who without you would not necessarily have the quality of life they want to have”

Meet Justin - who successfully kayaked 420 miles while connected to a life support system for 24 hours a day....
“In Bristol on Tuesday 8th October I completed a kayaking trip that had begun 32 days, 420 miles and 280 locks earlier on Saturday 7th September in Skipton, North Yorkshire. These are large numbers, and the logistics to carry out a trip like this over so many days, miles and locks are immense. These were complicated by my medical condition - I have had my intestines removed on account of Crohn's disease and am attached to a life support system to receive nutrition. This condition is called short bowel syndrome and my nutrition, or feed, is known as total parenteral nutrition (TPN). The feed needs to be kept refrigerated until in use. I was attached to this life support system for 24 hours a day, for 32 days, even while kayaking to be able to complete this challenge. I needed, therefore, to ensure that wherever I ended up I was always accompanied by my medical supplies. This meant trying to accurately predict where we would be mooring at the end of each day. What I realised very early that the River Trent represented the most unpredictable section of the trip and would require the most planning. Our schedule set us 100 miles to paddle, upstream, over 6 days. My reconnaissance trip, with fellow paddler Stevo, to the Trent at the beginning of August only strengthened my fears that perhaps my chosen route was too ambitious. How long would we be able to paddle into the current following heavy rain fall? Could we deal with strong headwinds? How many miles could we paddle if conditions were against us? Difficult questions to answer but I was lucky to meet up with Terry Oliver and between us we spent many months discussing possibilities, tides, timings, expectations and permutations of the River Trent. Terry's vast knowledge of the river was invaluable as we set about planning how to paddle it together. On September 13th Terry and I had a 6 hour window to paddle 27 miles, before the tide turned against us. Everything went perfectly, despite Terry having badly twisted his pelvis the day before, we made it from Keadby to Torksey minutes before our support boat.
breezemagazine 16
I was exhausted but relieved to have finally got this day over with. But the next two days of 17 and 10 miles were more physically demanding as the weather turned against us. Strong headwinds, gusting up to 40 mph, made progress a struggle. I have to rely on many people and organisations to make a trip like this possible. My sister, Victoria, and I spent about 10 months putting it together. Around the River Trent special support came from: Nottingham City Council Adventure Team who provided and crewed a support boat, "Tinker's Leen" of the Nottingham Narrowboat Project; Valley Sea Kayaks who refitted my Nordkapp kayak; plus, of course, Team GB Canoeists Tim Baillie (Gold, London Olympics 2012) and budding Olympian Adam Burgess, who both paddled with us. So far our fundraising efforts have accrued over £10,000 for research into the early detection and treatment of bowel cancer. This is particularly relevant to me, since my own father died from bowel cancer about 20 years ago”. Please visit www.gutlesskayaking.com for more details of this trip, Justin’s condition and the research that donations are funding. breeze what’s on Pollyanna’s Celebration of the Spirit of Scotland
2013 has been officially designated The Year of Natural Scotland, and in celebration of this event Wildlife Artist Pollyanna Pickering has created a remarkable new collection of work inspired by her recent travels in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland. She will be opening her private gallery at Brookvale House Oaker, Matlock, DE4 2JJ (AA signposted) from 16th Nov – 1st Dec 10.00am – 6.00pm for a special exhibition, when over fifty original paintings inspired by her love of the wildlife of Scotland will also be on display to the public for the first time. Widely acclaimed as one of Europe’s foremost wildlife artists, Pollyanna is renowned for her travels into some of the most remote and inhospitable parts of the world, where she studies and paints endangered species in their increasingly fragile habitats. However every winter Pollyanna opens her private gallery for an exhibition inspired by her love of British Wildlife. Pollyanna has sketched Scottish wildlife – including red squirrels, pine martens and the elusive Scottish Wildcats – from the banks of Loch Ness to the Black isle, observed dolphins and the Moray Firth, and ospreys at Loch Garten. Also featured in the exhibition will be Pollyanna’s favourites – Highland Cows – animals for whom every day is a bad hair day! Also on display throughout will be Pollyanna's extensive ranges of greetings cards, fine art and limited edition prints, and a wide variety of gift ware featuring her work, including stationery, china mugs, cross stitch kits, signed sets of her postage stamps issued in Africa, and first day covers for the Royal Mail alongside an exclusive display of the latest selection of gift ware commissioned by Harrods. There will be over 150 Christmas card designs to choose from, including the latest charity cards published by Guide dogs for the Blind, the RSPCA, Cats Protection League, The Wildlife Trust, and Blue Cross among many others. Five new fine art calendars of her work will be available for 2014, along with a new range of eco-friendly wrapping paper and cards, and even Christmas crackers featuring her designs! Nottingham Casuals Rugby Football Club has been part of Beeston since 1922, the Clubhouse is situated in Beeston Rylands between the Trent and the canal and was built in 1972. Breeze finds out how the club is developing and encourage you to join them... The Senior playing squad has increased from two to three teams in the last few seasons and they won a national award from the RFU for recruiting students from the local Universities so they keep playing Rugby whilst away from home. Recently, the club has developed a strategy to bring Rugby to the children of Beeston and in 2011 - “We set up a Minis and Juniors section, which has grown from nothing to 6 age groups in 2 seasons and we're hoping to introduce many more kids to this wonderful sport this season.

In October, we were selected by Broxtowe council as their third 'Satellite' club and we'll be offering free coaching to local schools on a Thursday night, from November 7th”. To support this bold strategy and ensure they can provide adequate facilities for a growing number of local adult and junior players, they have recently asked local architects to produce plans for a large clubhouse extension and are seeking, and in some cases secured, funding from a number of sources, including the RFU to carry through our dream and upgrade the clubhouse. “We're now trying to increase our local presence to ensure everyone Beeston and the surrounding area knows who we are and that taking up Rugby can improve your fitness, make new friends and have loads of fun at the same time, be you young or old! We've also been taking part in community events, like the Beeston Carnival and Christmas lights switch on and coaching local cubs and Scouts plus in local schools - so look out for us”. It’s MOVEMBER, Prostate Disease awareness month for men AND DOGS!! November has been a month for raising the awareness of prostate cancer in men for several years now. This year, Churchcroft Vets are joining in but with the focus on dogs. Unlike in men, benign prostate disease is very common in dogs but prostate cancer is really quite rare. Research shows that the majority of uncastrated male dogs over 5 years old have evidence of prostate disease. As affected men will testify, prostate disease is uncomfortable and annoying. Untreated prostate disease can progress to life-threatening illness. Fortunately the canine version, when caught early, is usually treated quite easily with a course of tablets. To help everyone to have the healthiest possible male dogs, Churchcroft Vets are undertaking free prostate examinations for all entire male dogs over 5 years old during “Movember”. George, head vet at Churchcroft, says “A prostate examination is a quick and painless test that is done without any sedation. It is a simple way to make sure that your male dog is not one of the affected ones.” George is also signing up for the main Movember event and growing a sponsored moustache in November in aid of Men's Health programs although he admits he is nervous about his ability to produce a lustrous upper lip (progress will be shown on Churchcroft's Facebook page). To arrange a free prostate examination for your male dog or just to donate to help improve men's health, call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855.

breezegardening This month we start to see the real onset of winter, with colder nights and much shorter days. We need to care for our hard work earlier in the year... After a remarkably warm summer and then a very benign autumn we can surely expect changes to come our way weather and temperature wise. This is nothing to fear as plants are either evolved to adapt or can be protected sufficiently to enable them to thrive when next spring comes. Why plants die in the cold The first thing to note is that not all plants do die off in the cold! Native plants to this country are totally adapted to our seasons. The problem comes, in some cases, with the very popular range of imported plants (but many of these are used to cold weather as well, depending on where they came from). The basic process of plant death due to cold/freezing conditions are that the water within the plant can freeze and then this frozen water expands and ruptures the cells which leads to the plant being unable to function and thus it begins to decompose as cell life is extinguished, turning plant material black as it does so. Plants that can survive these harder conditions have internal mechanisms which move water out of cells and generate a sort of plant antifreeze. They also slow all activity down and become dormant. But what if you have the types of plants that were never evolved to deal with temperatures of near or below freezing? Whilst it is the first step to insulate a plants leaves and stem when looking at insulation methods it is also important to remember that the roots of a plant are the most vulnerable. This is because if cell death
breezemagazine 34
occurs here then the plant cannot derive nourishment whereas if leaves are damaged in a period of low growth they can grow back later in better weather. Practical ways to shelter plants Insulation: Bubble wrap, sack cloth or fleece can be wrapped around the pot of any large container plant. Lift the pot off the ground using either wooden decking panels (which can be bought ready made) or ceramic pot supports. The idea is to get the plants just that bit off the frost level. Stems and leaves: the normal material in use today is the synthetic fleece which can be bought in packets or off the roll for larger plants. Even a basic shelter which provides cover from above can really help your plant’s chances of survival through tough weather. Better still bring them in to a greenhouse or conservatory. If you are able to add some sort of base level of heat, to simply protect against the very lowest temperatures, then all the better. Don’t over-water In general it is usually not necessary to water plants so much in winter unless they are true house plants (i.e in a fully heated environment to around 20c - and even then less watering is required in winter). In the cold plants tend to slow down and simply require less water & nutrients. Which plants need protecting? If you know the species of your plant then you can research which country it originated from and it can be surprising that even something as popular as the palm tree can grow in both hot climates and very cold ones - depending on the species. This is also worth bearing in mind when you next choose a plant for your garden or container. Even amongst so called ‘outdoor
plants’ there can be quite a wide variation in survivability here in the UK. It’s one good reason to get some solid advice from a professional landscaper or garden supplier if you are in any doubt about a specific type of plant. Don’t forget that basic shelter such as a fence or thick hedge can also boost survival chances - we have covered this previously. Other jobs to do in the winter garden Cleaning our pots - not exactly thrilling is it? We tend to put it off, at least until we actually need to do it at sowing time! So come on, scrub those pots with a stiff brush in warm water and household detergent to get rid of the encrusted dirt. This cleanliness now will really help when we get going again next spring so do make the time. Soak in a garden disinfectant to finish the process to get rid of the things you can’t see. Leave them to soak for several days to be sure all spores are killed. Unwashed pots might need to be soaked for several weeks to let disinfectant penetrate the grime. Rinse well before use, obviously. If you are intending planting out seeds next year (were you on our journey when we covered building your own coldframe or greenhouse?) then now is the time to browse the seed catalogues and deciding which ones to try your hand at. (continues...)

PLANTS THAT CAN GROW ALL YEAR OUTDOORS: Yucca: Will flower in summer and keeep it’s leaves in winter. You can pull off any dead leaves that appear to keep it looking tidy. Golden Creeping Jenny: You need to keep the soil moist in summer and in winter it really rewards as it cascades over the rim of a pot giving you lovely greenery just when you need it most. Its golden, coinshaped leaves are a delight and go with other plants well for a medley of green winter life! Japanese Pieris: In winter, the flower buds are showy - most usually dark red, with some opening to shades of pink. Though its evergreen foliage provides interest in all seasons, the spring growth on Japanese pieris is especially striking, varying in color from glossy red to salmon pink to creamy white, depending on the type.
(... continued) Prepare the ground ready for next years borders. Winter is an ideal time to dig over any new beds or borders ready for spring sowing. Don’t bother if the ground is frozen or waterlogged, other than that it is an ideal time to get to work, and not too hot of course. Don’t forget nature. Try to make the effort to feed our feathered friends so they are still with us next year when we sit outside. Winter is an especially challenging time for birds as food is scarce and water can be frozen. You don't have to go buying in ready packaged bird food; starlings go for peanuts. Thrushes & blackbirds like overripe apples and raisins .Consider buying fat balls as they are so high in energy and it is easy just to buy them now in many forms including moulded into a half coconut shell ready to put out. As always in our lovely hobby, embrace the challenges and enjoy!
Bergenia: With its green, glossy, oval leaves, it is a strong grower that provides a good anchoring element in a container design. The leaves turn a lovely burgundy in Autumn. Variegated redtwig dogwood: The leaves have a white margin and grayish green centre, with bright red stems that shine in winter. These look especially good against an evergreen backdrop. Sedum: These are nearly the ideal plant. When they emerge from the soil in spring they look good and continue to look superb all growing season. Many varieties are attractive in winter when their foliage dies and is left standing. New Zealand Broadleaf: Evergreen shrubs and some varieties have simple, ovate leaves and tiny yellow-green flowers. Hebe: This distinctive variegated plant remains a good choice for a winter garden. With a foliage taht is dark green, yellow and cream along with some greyish tones towards its centre. When summer comes back to us the display is augmented by fluffy spikes of reddish-purple flowers. These last into Autumn. Witch Hazel: These tarditional and visually beautiful shrubs really work in the winter garden. By autumn their leaves produce colourful displays as they fall, with winter giving way to the bare branches which are covered with fragrant, spidery like flowers.

WHAT PRICE FREEDOM? As so often in life the effects of either ageing or an illness can creep up slowly and gradually deny us the freedom to move around the home as we once did. “The worst case scenario is a fall for an elderly person whilst trying to get up their own stairs” explains Roger, the owner and hands on manager of Liftec. Such a fall in familiar surroundings can unnerve and lessen confidence in the elderly - even if they were lucky enough not to be badly injured. The result can be a life confined to living in one or two rooms at best and a sense of being demoralised at not having full use of the facilities at home which was once taken for granted. Roger of Liftec deals with these types of case all the time and also sees the positive impact his installation work has for them. “I have seen many, many people who are clearly in a much happier place - quite literally - after their stairlift has been installed and they have used it for the first time themselves. All the hard work, risk and worry of ascending their stairs has disappeared as they enjoy having use of, in effect, their own personal domestic lift”. adds Roger. The price of a stairlift can be astonishingly affordable, especially as Liftec is an independent company and customers deal with the owner. “I offer straight forward advice, quotation and follow up service with no nasty hidden charges, gimmicks or anything else that may upset the customer. I care about the people I install for and can understand their issues” says Roger. By fitting a stairlift a customer can avoid having to move house or struggle in conditions they shouldn’t have to. Call Roger, the owner, and see if he can help with an installation that can assist in giving back your freedom. Autumn sale: Brand new Brooks Stairlift from £895 fitted with full warranty. ARIES [March 21st-April 20th] Love and romance is most certainly in the air once you have made your mind up about someone special. Holding on to past emotions gets in the way until you decide to let go at long last. You find organization becomes the key to some success. Independent and raring to go you make plans that even could raise your eyebrows.
CANCER [June 22nd-July 23rd] Looking forward to some kind of break seems to be out of the question for most. However as life gets more hectic you plan some surprise to look forward to for you and a loved one. Watching the pennies you travel some miles to enjoy some peace and quiet. Opportunities arise for you to make one decision regarding financial gains.
LIBRA [Sept 24th-Oct 22nd] Trying to keep your feet on the ground when so busy has your head in a spin for a while. Not always seeing, eye to eye with someone, a compromise is made to make life easier all- round. A family get together is more than likely which brings solidarity and eases one delicate situation. Mind set on good prospects you deliver well on time.
TAURUS [April 21st-May 20th] Busy as ever one way or another you try to keep in some control when you feel certain pressures building. Not taking no for an answer you curtail slightly when another has you thinking in terms of gains. Keeping a distance from either a family member or friend you do your best even then to give some support when needed.
LEO [July 24th-Aug 23rd] Understanding the needs of others you make sure some of your spare time is spent with them. Partners give support and working as a team allows some one to see what they are up against. Getting any neglected paperwork out of the way you put ideas into reality, which in time could bring financial gain. Social life becomes busier.
SCORPIO [Oct 23rd-Nov 22nd] Once you have your feet under the table regarding future prospects your mind is then set on making life much easier. Exciting moments with loved ones compensate for any disappointment away from home. Emotions get the better of you when least expected but soon out of the way and dusted you continue to gain admiration.
VIRGO Aug 24th-Sept 23rd] When driving a hard bargain you become as formidable as ever succeeding in your plan to gain control and the respect you so rightly deserve. With family commitments in tow you adjust accordingly making sure you still reach certain goals for the month as planned. Investing time and effort into projects may well pay off in the long run.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23rd-Dec 22nd] Trying to do your own thing may prove difficult with so much to occupy your mind. Listening to another persons point of view becomes tiresome until discussions are held and a positive solution is found which suits all. Working toward achieving your goals has its moments with social life becoming more exciting with those you know.
FEEL THE BREEZE 0115 9678663
GEMINI [May 21st-June 21st] Speaking your mind when least expected rattles some one close. Not interested in what others have to say you decide for yourself what is best. Love and romance gives one day particularly plenty for you to think about. Making decisions regarding the home comes as no surprise. Making sure all is up to date you go and treat yourself.
breezemagazine 42
CAPRICORN [Dec 23rd-Jan 20th] Feeling more positive about life in general certainly has its benefits. Gaining control and standing up for yourself causes a few feathers to ruffle but trying to get one person to see sense is another matter. Plenty of laughter and taking a trip out does the trick and puts things in perspective. Younger members of the family keep you busy. AQUARIUS [Jan 21st-Feb19th] November is a good month to regain control one way or another. Not feeling fairly treated you decide to turn things around for you and not others. Making important decisions becomes easier than of late with someone having to tow the line. Any imbalance in relationships is soon corrected with lots of love and romance around. PISCES [Feb 20th-March 20th] Once some event is out of the way life takes a turn for the better. Meeting new people and making new friends brings happiness and a sense of belonging. With long term future in mind financial gain likely which could well bring a smile to your face. Keeping occupied one way or another you bring pleasure to family and friends.

The Derbyshire based, Thorntons employee will be pedalling the tarmac from London all the way to Paris – that is over 280 miles in just a maximum of 24 hours. This will include the ferry crossing and then cycling through the night in an attempt to reach the Eiffel tower within the time period. Ian wants to raise over £1000 for Scope, which he plans to do by doing raffles, coffee mornings, quizzes, good old badgering friends and even selling sponsorship opportunities on his cycling clothing!
