This month feature is all about the Kids keeping them busy, educating them and having fun!

Karate promotes physical health and agility, discipline, concentration and self-defence. It is a great way for children to get exercise, meet other children and learn valuable skills which stay with them for life. The belt system used in karate provides a useful way for children to focus on "moving up the ranks" and the sense of satisfaction and self-fulfilment this brings builds self-esteem and confidence. It is also about training the mind and spirit so children learn skills they can take into other areas of life too, such as better concentration and perseverance, vital for academic success. For More Information, call today on: 07789 095 467. Or stop by for a free introductory session!

Bramcote Day Nursery aim to provide a secure and happy environment for your child which will enable them to develop to their full potential. Established since 1994, there is a baby room to cater for babies and crawlers up to the age of eighteen months, an area for walkers, another area that accommodates toddlers and an area for the pre-school children. Children are grouped according to age and developmental stage. There is an outdoor play area, and when weather permits the facility makes use of nearby parks. The nursery is open from 8:00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday. There are also support systems in place for children with additional needs. Children attend for a variety of sessions each week. The staff understand that the framework is not about pushing children yet ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to learn through high quality play to the best of their ability. They strongly believe that children are active learners from birth and that if provided with the right environment, support and experiences; it will then in turn encourage their curiosity, imagination and creativity. The care team ensure that they work together with carers and parents to ensure that they stimulate each child emotionally and intellectually by providing unique circumstances that promote individual active learning. The environment is organized into clearly defined areas to accommodate different activities appropriate to the development and competence of the children. Areas are divided, and where possible, by the use of low-level shelving that reduces distraction and allows children to become engrossed in their activities. Mealtimes should be social, happy times where skills can be developed and foods tasted! All of their meals are carefully planned and created using only the freshest ingredients to meet the individual needs and requirements of each child. The Village Nursery is committed to maintaining the highest standards of day care and nursery education from six weeks to five years. They offer full day and part time day care and early years education in a safe, secure and stimulating environment, along with good access to outside play areas. Maureen Scott, one of the owners, is an experienced and qualified early year’s teacher and this is reflected across the nursery with learning activities from the baby unit upwards. “We recognise what an important role we play in each child’s development. Most of all, we want our children to be happy, confident and secure.” explains Maureen The Village Nursery is divided into five groups: The Bumble Bees – 6 weeks to 12 months The Caterpillar Crew – 12 months to 18 months The Butterfly Bunch – 18 months to 2½ years The Squirrels Nest - 2½ years to 3 years The Den Pre-school – 3 to 5 years Early Years Foundation Stage: The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the standards that all early years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. There are four guiding principles: every child is a unique child; children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships; children learn and develop well in an enabling environment; children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. Every child has a Key carer, a Nursery Nurse assigned to them to work with you to follow your child’s development and progress. Each group has a Manager / Senior Nursery Nurse who has overall responsibility for their section, and is also available to talk to about your child. The Nursery has their very own cook on the premises who provides home-cooked hot meals daily. Special diets can be accommodated. Enjoying the lighter side of life after losing a total of over ten stones... Long term changes to lifestyle and eating habits are encouraged as the key to a better quality of life. Two ladies show the way forward...

Alysen McLaughlin has lost an amazing 6.5 st after joining in April 2013 through the GP referral scheme. Alysen says 'a lot of people worry about joining a Slimming club because they don't know what to expect, but from the minute I walked into the group, the support I've received from my Consultant Louise and the rest of the group has been brilliant. I've dropped several dress sizes and loved shopping for an outfit for my daughters wedding in August where lots of family and friends didn't recognise me! It's made a huge difference to my life, I've got so much more energy and I can now do things that I couldn't before'. Cheryl Bowers joined along with two of her friends who wanted to lose

weight after having their babies, and she has lost over 4 stone. They all love Slimming World's Food Optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmers to fill up on satisfying yet healthy foods like fruit and veg, lean meat and fish, pasta, potatoes, rice and pulses without having to weigh or measure. Cheryl says 'I love trying out all the delicious healthy recipes I pick up from other members at the group and my friends are amazed at how much I can eat and still lose weight.

They both slimmed down at Wollaton Cricket Club Group and were crowned 'Woman of the Year' a Slimming World Competition that recognises the achievements of women making long-term healthy lifestyle changes. Louise who runs the Wollaton Cricket Club group says ' I am so proud of Alysen and Cheryl, not only do they both look fabulous, their health has improved, they're bursting with energy and are an inspiration to everyone. The Wollaton Slimming World group is held every Tuesday at 5.30 and 7.30 and Friday at 9.30am, and Louise is also relaunching a lunchtime group at The Pearson Centre Beeston on Tuesdays at 12.30. breeze on yer bike!

Safer cycling around tram tracks is crucial if accidents are to be avoided. To help prepare, TravelRight Broxtowe held training sessions on cycling around tracks, which covered everything from how to cross over the tracks safely to tips on good road positioning. The sessions were a part of Nottingham’s European Mobility Week programme that took place throughout Broxtowe Borough and the Nottingham urban area. At sessions held last month. The Mayor of Broxtowe Borough, Councillor Stan Heptinstall attended a session to show his support and encourage more local people to take advantage of training on offer. After chatting to participants, the Mayor got on a bike to join in the fun. “I think the training was an excellent opportunity for everyone to find out about the few simple rules we all need to follow. It is important to know how to be safe on a bicycle whilst still being able to have fun” said the Executive Director of TravelRight, Gary Smerdon-White. “I am pleased that TravelRight was able to offer this training to the people of Broxtowe Borough and that we helped with community safety in some way.” Twenty two people attended the sessions which were held in the evening and at the weekend, to be accessible for the working population who use their bike to commute. Jamie Swift, NET Marketing Manager, commented: “We are delighted to have supported this training as we're committed to ensuring the safety of all road users as the tram network expands to Chilwell and Clifton. This latest initiative complements our own efforts to remind cyclists of a few simple precautions they need to take in areas where trams operate.” NET were a sponsor of the training and recognise the needs of cyclists, and Sustrans Ucycle assisted with the promotion. breeze restaurant review Looking for a great atmosphere, good food and service that will want you returning for more? Then look no further than Table 8 on Wollaton Road in Beeston...

Our visit to Table 8 was nothing less than a taste of international standards of dining right here on our doorstep in Beeston. Each of our guests chose a different dish so we could sample the delights of the choice of menu, which has been chosen carefully to reflect both British and classic European cuisine. Starters we opted for Mussels with garlic delicious! Also enjoyed was the pork, liver and pistachio pate with an onion and raisin confit, served with toast. We lapped up the sampling and enjoyed every mouthful. For our mains the experience continued, from the succulent pork to the mouthwatering fish dish, each of which left none of us disappointed. The highlight was the Fillet Steak...

chef’s talents - a beautiful and intensely flavourful dance of notes and balances which delighted and left me once again expressing my approval enthusiastically. It’s obvious that the front of house team have a passion for the food they handle and a pleasing respectful manner, the friendly staff will advise and help you chose, to make the most of their delicious menu. A classic choice which is a menu item that many restaurants get wrong. Not so here! The level of care exhibited in this deceptively simple dish was clear to both the eye and the palate. Having enjoyed the finest steak in New York, I can honestly say that the chef at Table 8 would give them a run for their money. It was cooked to perfection! breeze what’s on Bringing in the Harvest….

As the nights take on a chill and the leaves turn a golden hue, the tasks in the garden don’t slow just take on a different focus. It’s a busy time harvesting the fruits and vegetables of your labour while also thinking beyond to next year’s crops and the joys of the work ahead. At DIG IN COMMUNITY ALLOTMENT they will be celebrating this time of year and all its glory with their annual Harvest event. This will take place on Saturday 18th October at 11-3 at the Dig in site, Albany allotments on Pasture Rd Stapleford. It’s a free event with many activities such as pumpkin carving, apple pressing, arts and crafts and food tasting. You can even pick up a preserve or help to knit or crochet our beautiful community blanket that’s taking shape.

breezemagazine 26

Kathy, a volunteer at the Garden explained… ‘Harvest is the culmination of the growing season and we like to celebrate the hard work of all the volunteers. It’s great to share the work we do with the local community and invite everyone to celebrate with us. This is a fun and educational event and there is something for all the family. Come along and see what we do, just drop in!’ DIG IN COMMUNITY ALLOTMENT is run by volunteers and is a haven in the heart of Stapleford north. It is run by local people for local people and is open to all. The aim is to encourage local people to grow healthy food, bring people together and enjoy and understand the environment around them. If you would like to know more about DIG IN COMMUNITY ALLOTMENT or how you can enjoy being part of a community garden on your doorstep contact: Karen on 07943 700302 or www.digincommunityallotment.blogspot.com or like us on Facebook.

Museum Offers Unique Way to Honour Fallen World War One Soldiers

Members of the public will be able to knit a poppy on the same type of hand-powered machine that was used to knit socks for soldiers during the Great War to honour Nottinghamshire’s fallen soldiers. This one-off opportunity, on Saturday 11th October, is free of charge, and is part of a wider knitting day being held at the Framework Knitters Museum, Ruddington, for BBC Radio Nottingham’s Big Poppy Knit campaign. The Big Poppy Knit campaign, organised by BBC Radio Nottingham as part of the World War 1 centenary, has been created to commemorate the people who lost their lives during WW1. They are asking members of the public knit or crochet 11,000 poppies to mark each of the 11,000 Nottinghamshire men who fell during the war. The poppies will then be donated to the Royal British Legion to be sold as part of the Poppy Appeal. The knitting day, which will run from 11 am to 4 pm, is open to all ages, and both knitters and non-knitters. The knitting machines that will be used to knit the material for the poppies, called Circular Knitting Machines, are really easy to use so can be used by children and those with no knitting ability. For those who can knit there will be space in the tea room to sit and create poppies, with a variety of patterns available. It will be free to take part in all activities. In addition to the poppy knitting all visitors will also be able to see the newly redeveloped museum for free that day. During World War 1 a movement was launched to provide the men at the front line with knitting clothing, especially socks. The Country set about this task with great vigour, and many of the socks knitted would have been created on hand-turned knitting machines, such as the Circular Knitting Machines that are now at the Framework Knitters Museum. “The Great War saw the country pull together and provide the troops with the knitted goods that they needed,” Paul Baker, Museum Manager, said. “Now it is our turn to knit, and help to raise as much money as we can to support our Armed Forces personnel. We hope as many people as possible will come to the event, both knitters and non-knitters, and support this great cause”. breeze success Greenwood Community Awards Recognises Broxtowe Volunteers Three individual volunteers and groups from Broxtowe borough were recognised with Greenwood Community Awards. Greenwood Partnership Board Chair, Councillor John Knight presented the awards to community groups and individual volunteers, for outstanding contribution towards improving the environment. He praised volunteers in his welcome speech: “we would not have the beautiful county that we have without volunteers who work hard to keep it that way.” Nominations had been received from groups and organisations for environmental work carried out over the last year working towards the creation of Greenwood, Nottinghamshire’s Community Forest. One Hundred and thirty guests enjoyed a review of achievements by volunteers and organisations presented by Colin Barson, Chair of the Friends of Greenwood Community Forum. Eleven awards were presented on the night to volunteers from all areas of Greenwood and included awards for individuals and teams of all ages and abilities who take part in conservation tasks or work behind the scenes. A highlight of the evening was the Walking for Health Award which was presented to Maureen Hayden, a member of Walk & Talk walking group for twelve years. Colin Barson, Chair of the Friends of Greenwood Community Forum commented: “This is always a big night for volunteers who work hard on our parks & green spaces within the Greenwood area. I never know how the event will better the previous one and I’m always surprised and delighted.” Friends of Bramcote Ridge and Ken Hamilton, Friends of Brinsley Headstocks also received certificates thanking them for their contribution during 2013.

misty mornings As we start to see shorter days we also sense the start of colder and damper weather in the garden. With some lovely warmer days over September, autumn has now definitely turned, and it feels colder. It's a time to start preparing for early frosts as well using all those dead leaves for mulch! Why not get some broad beans started? An early cropping broad bean called Aquadulce Claudia has long podded, whiteseeded tasty broad beans and it’s early to mature. It is recommended for autumn and winter sowings throughout the U.K. for the earliest crops the following spring and summer. Broad Beans - here’s how: Prep: Sow direct into soil prepared by digging and raking to a depth of 50mm, spacing the seeds 15-23cm apart. Sowing: Best sown alternately in double rows allowing 23cm between the two lines forming each row. Allow 60-90cm between further rows.

breezemagazine 34

What to expect: Germination takes up to twenty one days and that’s when you see shoots coming up. Support on canes or similar as they get taller by tying them with soft garden wire. These can also be sown in pots or trays of compost on a windowsill or in a greenhouse for eventual planting outside. They grow best in a sheltered site, but not shaded, in well drained soil. Sowing cropping is about six months after germination. For earliest crops sow late OctoberNovember but can be sown right through to late January. It is advisable to pinch out tips of plants when the first pods have set (started to form beans) to deter blackfly. Winter Herb Growing Let’s take a look at something anyone can do during winter to keep something going in our garden or even on a balcony! Not all herbs will grow in winter here in the UK but some most certainly will: Rosemary will do fine even without a cold frame. You should be able to crop a little from it if it’s a well-established plant, but don’t overdo it as it’ won’t put much new

growth on unless the winter is quite mild, but taking some of the old growth is fine.

breezegardening (continued...) Mint and Parsley: both okay in winter, and parsley in particular will keep growing even if it’s snows! It’s slow growth, though, and you won’t be able to use that much of it unless you have a lot of plants. It’s probably worth moving it into a cold frame to encourage more growth. Parsley self-seeds with abandon, so after a season or two you can end up with plenty of small plants in the corners of pots so plenty to harvest.

Sage and thyme: can survive without any protection over the winter, but again, can have slow growth so don’t take too much from any one plant unless the winter is unusually mild or you’ll take away all the plant’s reserves. These will do well in a cold frame and should grow at least a handful of fresh leaves, in which case you should be able to keep getting small but useful quantities of fresh herbs from them over the winter. Why not get a simple coldframe and try out getting more from your garden this year? They come in handy in Autumn and also in early spring. You could also build your own: Basic Cold Frame The back of the frame should be about twice as tall as the front so the lid slopes to a favourable angle for capturing sun rays. Build the frame tall enough to accommodate the maximum height of the plants before they are removed. The frame can be made of brick, block, plastic, wood, or just about any material you have on hand. It should be built to keep drafts out and soil in. Use the inexpensive and widely available double walled clear plastic cell sheeting for the top. Partially burying it takes advantage of the insulation from the earth, but it also can cause water to collect and the direct soil

breezemagazine 36

contact will shorten the lifespan of the wood frame parts so treat them first with some preservative. Placing your frame near a wall, rock, or building adds additional insulation and protection from the elements - and wind is definitely one to keep away from your plants! Make sure your frame is South facing to capture maximum sunshine and heat. The ideal temperature inside is 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 55 to 65 degrees at night. Use an inexpensive thermometer in a shaded spot inside the frame for quick reference. Beware of overheating at certains times of the year; a bright spring day can heat a cold frame to as warm as 100 degrees, so prop up or remove the cover as necessary. The more you vent, the more you should water. On cold nights, especially when frost is predicted, cover the box with old quilts, or similar insulation to keep it warm inside - and remember to remove it to allow daylight in the next day! There is always a way to keep on gardening and it need not take up much space as we have shown, neither is it expensive - you can spend minimal amounts putting your own simple cold frame together (some have even used upturned large clear plastic storage boxes with holes drilled in the sides! So why not be inventive? It’s all part of the fun of gardening and you have virtually nothing to lose, always something to learn so as we journey towards Winter - Enjoy!

breeze promotion Prepare your pets for Fireworks Season It’s nearly Guy Fawkes’ night, the start of a stressful time of year for most dogs and cats. Every year millions of pets are terrified and some go missing or damage themselves or their homes in fear of the bangs and flashes of the fireworks which are fired off from late October until New Year. However, modern science means that we now know the best ways to help these pets to cope with the fireworks experience. The best strategies start before the fireworks so you should seek expert help as soon as possible to discuss the solution for your pets. It is important to recognise that pets who are scared of fireworks will tend to get worse every year if they are not helped through this time. Churchcroft Vets are experts in advising on the most effective methods to help your pet (and on what not to do too). As head vet George says “Each pet has specific needs so what suits one pet will not necessarily suit another. A thorough discussion of the problem is needed to make the best recommendations”. Through October, Churchcroft are offering FREE fireworks fear consultations so that your pet can get the best advice tailored to their individual needs. To take advantage of this offer and to help your pet through this stressful season, call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and ask for a free fireworks consultation.

Mid month you make changes with benefits, securing something of importance to you and those you love. Dividing time may prove difficult

TAURUS [April 21st-May 20th] Certain responsibilities take up precious time but this has no effect on either you or your family. Learning new skills and meeting influential people has a positive effect all round. Welcoming someone into your life has its moments of tears and pleasure. Making sure someone keeps an appointment you may end up telling porky’s one day.

LEO [July 24th-Aug 23rd] Not happy with one area of your life you swing into action making all your hard work worthwhile. Partners adjust to your demands when ideas for the home come to light. Stepping back and just letting others have their say puts you in good light with another. Opportunities arrive for you to put your best foot forward to move on.

SCORPIO [Oct 23rd-Nov 22nd] Feeling let down soon passes when better opportunities and loyal people surround you. Taking nothing for granted you change direction with one area of your life giving one person something to think about. VIRGO [Aug 24th-Sep 23rd] Although October becomes much busier than expected your able to glance ahead and become aware that certain changes taking place around you are of a beneficial nature. Taking time out to sort other people’s problems puts you in a dilemma. However one person comes to the rescue giving you the time needed to deal with important matters.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23rd-Dec22nd] Any exhaustion both mentally or physically is considered when changes are made to make life easier for you. Under pressure its seems someone cannot take no for an answer. Making sure all is in order you take that wellearned break with loved ones. Putting plans into action you make sure you reach your goals by the end of the month.

GEMINI [May 21st-June 21st] Plans are put into action to have some time alone where there is peace and tranquillity. Second week a meeting could well turn out better than you had anticipated with ideas for future gains likely. Turning things around in the home to suit you takes time and effort with promises to complete one unfinished job.

breezemagazine 42

CAPRICORN [Dec 23rd-Jan 20th] Feelings of isolation soon leave after discovering the reason for these feelings. Taking a trip down memory lane jogs emotions out of the blue therefore decide to put closure on one small chapter of your life. Discussions are held regarding future ventures as well as becoming more independent from others. Social invitations come your way. AQUARIUS [Jan 21st-Feb 19th] Instead of putting everyone first you make time for yourself and those closest to you. With no solution in sight to one problem you decide to go with the flow and no longer stress. Not feeling your best first few days your soon back on your feet organising and making progress in what could turn out to be a good move. A new friend not far away. PISCES [Feb 20th-March 20th] No longer likely to cut your nose off to spite your face and lose out you also begin to realise how strong you have become. Standing up to those who are not honest with you are found out and put in their place. Something new brings pleasure with a thirst for the best. Busy with family or friends keeps you occupied for the rest of the month.
