Meet Kyra Edwards, 16 years of age, she lives in Chilwell and trains at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham as part of the GB Rowing talent development scheme.
“I got my first rowing experience at my school: George Spencer Academy where I was Head Girl for the schools rowing team after success at local schools indoor rowing competition and becoming the fastest Girl of my age in the East Midlands I discovered I had large potential in the sport so went along to my Nottingham rowing club and quickly grew to love the sport. For the first year I thrived on indoor competition setting a British record for J15s at the British indoor

rowing champions ships, but still making the final of the National Championships placing 6th, the rest of my season was disrupted with a back injury. However after perseverance with my technique in the boat; 2013 became a very successful year for me. After winning an international Regatta in Gent in a double scull with Olivia Kay in April I then won J16 National schools Regatta, the most popular Junior Regatta of the season in my Single in May 2013 and collected a silver medal in the J17 category the day before. After my success I then began training once again in the double scull with Olivia Kay who came second in J16 at the National Schools Regatta. We competed at the prestigious Women’s Henley regatta racing the J18 category: two years above both of us, after 2 days and 5 races we reached the final and were runners up to the Norwegian national J18 national representatives. After our success we then went on to represent the Great Britain team of 2013, for GB vs. France match. It is a one off trial: the first person across the line wins. After leaving my prom early the night before the trials to attend Olivia and I won the trial. On 14th July 2013 Olivia and I took on France and won. Although, alternatively I was one of the eleven JW18 girls invited to final trials to get into the World or European Championship
team through previous trials throughout the year which I declined due to the extra work load it would have been at a young age as it is prominently 17 and 18 year olds who attend. However I am aiming to go to the Junior World Championships next year. I currently train 6 days a week which includes 10 sessions a week. The demand for training will increase throughout the rest of my rowing career, progressing to Under 23 and then senior level. Ultimately my aim is to be an Olympic champion in the sport. The cost of my goals include transport, training camps, equipment and competitions which conclusively add up to a large cost therefore I'm looking for sponsorship, any help toward expenses would be very gratefully accepted, in return for promotion of your company in any way requested”. If you’re interested please contact Kyra on 07979 31919 or email kyraedwards.rowing@gmail.com.

Deciding on after-school study? With the new school year starting, many parents start to look for things which will help their child with their maths and English studies at school. There are many alternatives available, including after-school classes and tutors. Here are a few tips which will help you get the right help for your child. Firstly anything you do must be personalised, taking into account the learning needs and style of the individual child. Any study or revision programme must be put together with your child in mind. Secondly, the study programme must be systematic. Maths and English are both skill-based subjects and skills can only be mastered through practice. This practice must be part of a structured programme so that your child can recognise his or her own achievement. Thirdly, the work must be relevant. Any course of study must be designed to meet the learning outcomes of the National Curriculum. This could involve specific exam revision, ongoing support or both. In any case it must start addressing the work studied at school and allow the child to demonstrate competence in those areas tested at school. The good news is that First Class Learning meets all three of these essential requirements. Our structured yet flexible programmes, designed for children in the UK, will help your child to achieve at school and grow in confidence. You can find out more by contacting Neetu & Steve on 07969 303171 or 0115 921 6238. Free Assessment during October 2013.

A Record Breaking Year! A Level students, at Bluecoat Academy Sixth Form, achieved a record breaking set of results in the Summer of 2013. The Sixth Form was one of only a few institutions across Nottinghamshire to achieve a 100% pass rate, for a third consecutive year. Half of A Level entries gained an A*, A, or B grade and 80% gained an A*-C grade. As a result, the majority of students successfully gained admission to their first choice of Institution with a record number going on to Russell Group Universities. At AS level students achieved their best ever results breaking records against all measures. This included a 94% pass rate and nearly 20% of entries achieving A grades. The continued exam success in recent years has led to a significant increase in the number of students choosing to study at Bluecoat Sixth Form. This year’s role has broken 420 students for the first time, up from 360 the previous year. Care and Compassion in South Africa Students from the Bluecoat Academy Sixth Form recently went on a 20 day Care and Compassion visit to Pietermaritzburg, Kwa ZuluNatal, South Africa. The purpose of the trip was to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds, sharing the compassionate and Christian principles that the Academy promotes. Whilst in Pietermaritzburg, students and staff spent their time working in local schools and being involved with projects in the local township, including one for children from abusive backgrounds. In preparation for the visit Bluecoat students carried out a range of fundraising activities. These included a sale of drinks, chocolate, and other sweet items, which almost sold out as it was so popular with younger students at the Academy; there was a basketball game between pupils and teachers in which the teachers won, much to the pupils’ dismay! In addition, there was also a common room music concert in which students performed collecting donations from other students. The Academy now has well established links in South Africa in what is now a biannual visit. Students are already thinking about planning their next visit in 2015.

Five reasons to get your child doing Karate... 1. Self-Discipline – One of the central tenets of Karate is an absolute focus on self-discipline. Today’s kids are so accustomed to receiving instant gratification that lessons in selfrestraint and discipline aren’t always easy to come by. Kids with a Karate background, however, are continually reminded of how essential selfdiscipline is. 2. Social Skills – Kids who don’t always thrive in highly social environments may find it easier to get to know people and make new friends when they’re in a room filled with peers who share a common interest. Karate can also foster camaraderie, as they force kids to pair off and build their skills together. 3. Set and Achieve Goals – Most forms of martial arts are based around an accomplishment system of coloured belts that signify the wearer’s degree of skill. When your child strives toward each new belt, they’re learning valuable lessons about setting and reaching goals. 4. Self-Esteem – Confidence comes with achievement, so your child’s self-esteem level will get a boost with every new move they master and every belt they earn. Kids who struggle with a low sense of selfworth usually become more confident as time progresses in their Karate training 5. Sense of Respect – Learning Karate will require your child to show their instructor unflinching respect. Today’s kid culture doesn’t always include respect for authority. When they go to karate, though, your child will be learning lessons in respect along with new moves. www.karatenottingham.co.uk Tel: 0115 875 4212 The Village Nursery is owned by a husband and wife team Maureen and John Scott. Maureen Scott is an experienced and qualified early year’s teacher and this is reflected across the nursery with learning activities from the baby unit upwards. “We recognise what an important role we play in each child’s development. Most of all, we want our children to be happy, confident and secure.” explains John The Nursery is in the fortunate location of being adjacent to a play park and green belt playing fields to which it has direct access. In addition, the Nursery gardens include four play areas, a lawn with flowerbeds, a bark park, woodland garden and a soft surfaced enclosed courtyard. This means they are well equipped for both indoor and outdoor activities. Early Years Foundation Stage: Throughout The Village Nursery they follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). “Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential.” adds Maureen. The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the standards that all early years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. There are four guiding principles: every child is a unique child; children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships; children learn and develop well in an enabling environment; children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. Every child has a Key carer, a Nursery Nurse assigned to them to work with you to follow your child’s development and progress. Each group has a Manager / Senior Nursery Nurse who has overall responsibility for their section, and is also available to talk to about your child. The Nursery has their very own cook on the premises who provides home-cooked hot meals daily. Special diets can be accomodated. The Kip McGrath style of tuition originated in Australia and there are now well over 200 centres in the UK alone. Tuition is available for all children aged 6 – 18, no matter what their current ability. Following a free assessment which determines the level a student is currently working at, those who enrol at the centre attend 80 minute sessions in either English or Maths which involve some 6 or 7 different activities. These include written work and working with tailor made computer programmes. All the staff at the centre are fully qualified teachers but unlike the school classroom, everything is on a first name basis. “We don’t stand on ceremony here,” says Centre Director Nick Milton. “We want our students to feel comfortable. We offer prizes for great work and progress and want every session someone comes for to be enjoyable in its own right.” The results Nick and his colleagues achieve speak for themselves. So long as students attend regularly, complete their tasks and do all their homework, they can expect to advance 3 years in 1. Furthermore, GCSE students who have attended for some months prior to their exams often find themselves achieving grades 1 or 2 places higher than originally predicted. The band recently wrapped up a successful campaign throughout Europe and the UK, culminating in a triumphant show at London’s The Forum on June 2nd. On the heels of these dates, the demand for more “Big Country” brings a second trek to the U.K. with the ‘Land’s End To John O’Groats Tour’ 2013. These will be more micro events than tour dates, with sets crafted for each hometown. Every song, and every note, of every show will be an extension of the town’s people, aimed straight at the heart of each community, promising the communion of soul and sound. The band just kicked off a three month North American tour launching with a show at the legendary Grammercy Theater in New York, on June 7th. Big Country’s latest release “The Journey” (which is the first album from Big Country in 14 years), has been lauded by fans and critics alike. This amazing body of work harkens back to the Scottish roots of the band’s beginnings, and lays down a marker for what the future holds for a group that organically collected itself out of a deep sense of love, brotherhood, and respect for original vocalist, Stuart Adamson, who left us way too early on December 16th, 2001. Hurt, Another Country, Hail & Farewell, and the title track, The Journey, invite the listener in, and hold them tight to the chest of the hope and humanity that a great album extends. “We have had to dig deep to make this record and it has given us a new lease of life, It’s been gratifying to see and hear the fans welcoming our new music alongside the old, especially after all that has happened since we lost Stuart.” says drummer Mark Brzezicki. “The past is the past and it is safe where it is. It’s now time for some new memories”. Alongside Big Country founder members Bruce Watson (guitar) and Mark Brzezicki (drums), the band are complimented by singer Mike Peters (The Alarm), guitarist Jamie Watson (Bruce's son), plus former Simple Minds bassist Derek Forbes. “The Journey represents the

transition everyone associated with Big Country has had to make and that goes for the band and the fans” says vocalist and lyricist Mike Peters “The new songs have been drawn from the same creative well that has fuelled all of Big Country’s music and everyone who has been prepared to look and listen can see the continuity.” Formed in Dunfermline in 1981, Big Country went on to become Thu 7th November one of the most celebrated Nottingham Rescue Rooms British rock bands of a JUST ANSWER THIS SIMPLE QUESTION: generation. Bartons comedy, heritage breeze p & music festivals set to entertain the crowds this Autumn
Nottingham’s unique entertainment venue, Bartons, located at the old bus garage in Chilwell, is launching a series of comedy and music festivals throughout Autumn. Despite Phase Two of the Nottingham Tram network – dubbed “Tram-A-Geddon” – causing huge disruption to people and businesses in Chilwell until late 2014, the events team at Bartons has not let this deter them. Instead it’s full-steam ahead, fighting back with a campaign of culture, heritage, laughter and fun set to span the coming months, encouraging people to visit Chilwell and celebrate all it has to offer. Bartons is a vast 35,000 sq ft indoor and outdoor space that once played host to a huge fleet of regional buses, and is now home to the largest venue of its kind in the East Midlands. The venue launched a new and exciting programme of 50 events for the first time last summer, which proved to be hugely popular with locals and visitors with over 20,000 people heading to the venue to enjoy the fantastic entertainment. Steve Wallace, event organiser at Bartons, says: “Everyone has been hit in one way or another by the tram works, but despite this, we’ve decided to take on “Tram-A-Geddon” and all its disruption. We’ve gone ahead and established a cultural resistance to reclaim Chilwell with a very exciting schedule of events based on the arts and heritage, with quality entertainment and a dash of sheer craziness. Next year, when the tram network will be closer to completion, we hope to be back with a bang. Like Arnie said in the Terminator movies, I’ll be back!” Future events in the “Tram-A-Geddon” series will include a monthly comedy club, ceilidh and music concerts from Oxjam. Long Eaton Operatic Society presents The Hired Man... Acclaimed for its epic story and rousing, romantic score, The Hired Man tells the timeless, moving story of young couple John and Emily Tallentire and their struggle to carve a living from the land. Set against the backdrop of the Cumbrian lakes in the early twentieth century, this very British story brings to life the working class realities of the Hiring Fair, drinking bouts and whippet racing before the country life they hold dear is swept away by the devastation of the war to end all wars. The Hired Man is based on the much-loved novel by Melvyn Bragg, and brought to life by the heartbreakingly-beautiful music of award-

It’s haunting, thrilling, stirring stuff. Long Eaton Operatic Society is extremely proud to present such a quality musical to the wider audience it truly deserves. Nottingham’s Isabella De Santis joins inspirational sailing trip
Isabella De Santis (17) from Nottingham has taken part in an inspirational sailing trip with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, along with 27 other young people between the age of 9 -17 in recovery from cancer. Isabella joined the crew of one of five yachts to sail around the Solent last week (22nd -25th July), in a four-day yacht adventure. Isabella, who finished treatment in September 2012 for Hodgkins Lymphoma at the Queens Medical Centre, was joined by four other young people on board their boat, Scarlet Oyster. Isabella explained what the opportunity meant to her, “The trip was really fun, the sailing was a lot more leisurely that I thought it would be, everyone was relaxed and it was easy to talk to people. I have learnt a lot about sailing, but also how easy it is to get along with people when you have to work as a team.” Sailing onboard 42-48 foot cruising yachts, the trips provide a chance for the young people to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment, encouraged to work as a team and involved in everything from helming the boat to cooking. Departing from their south coast HQ in East Cowes Marina, Isle of Wight on Monday, the trip navigated the waters of the Solent, which took them to various stopovers including Yarmouth and Newtown for BBQ and water fight. Before a whirlwind speedboat ride around the iconic Isle of Wight Needles and then sailing back to Cowes. Giving the young people the opportunity to test their new skills on the water. Dame Ellen MacArthur who joined the young people Wednesday morning for a tour of the Yarmouth Lifeboat explained the impact the trips have “These young people are truly amazing. They face experiences that no child should ever have to go through, and yet they do it with the biggest smile on their faces, they are truly inspiring.” Launched in 2003 the aim of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is to give young people in recovery from cancer the chance to rebuild their confidence through sailing. Celebrating their 10 year anniversary, the Trust has grown beyond every expectation into a national charity. Working with every young person’s primary cancer care unit in the UK, taking young people aged between 8-24 who are in recovery from cancer sailing. There are many ways you can support The Trust with your time, money or services. breeze standing proud
It was another early start for the Air Cadets of1360 (Stapleford & Sandiacre Squadron) as they made their way to St Mary's church in Nottingham to remember those who took part in the Battle of Britain. The day began waiting for the service in the cold. Over 100 Cadets from South and East Midlands Wing attended the parade. Many civilians attended as well to remember their loved ones and to lay their wreaths. The cadets then paraded to the Market Square across Lace Market and through Angel Row. The Lord Mayor of Nottingham then spoke to the cadets and inspected them. All cadets looked extremely smart and really showed their respect. Even though the weather wasn't the best, all the cadets came out on top form and some of their parents watched proudly. “1360 Squadron really stood out as we won banner drill and that played a big part in the Battle of Britain Parade. Cadet Zach Davies said "I may of been freezing during the parade but it is a good day and I forgot about the cold! Overall it was a good parade, with it being one of the most important as well. Further information available from: Flight Lieutenant Gareth Fowler Tel: 07804593455 email: oc.1360@aircadets.org

This month we look at how you can plant your own fruiting tree - not only nice to look at but which gives you something back each year. Here in our gardening column we have been mentioning the care of fruiting trees. For those of you who haven’t yet got such a tree in your own garden then let’s take a look and help you decide if and how to plant one to add to your hobby. Choice of tree Whilst perhaps most of us associate the humble appletree with being the easiest and most common type of fruit bearing tree you don't always have to stick to this convention. Have a look at plum, pear, and even fig trees which can also produce good results (and don’t confuse fresh figs with dried ones - the fresh variety are really refreshing and light by comparison). Different varieties bear fruit at different times of the year with the fruit of early ripening trees tending not to keep well whereas later ripening varieties are suitable for storing over winter. You will need to be aware of the potential size your tree will grow to when matured and check if it’s self-fertilising. Self-fertile trees produce fruit without any need for another tree to pollinate it but if your tree is not the self-fertile type it will need to be paired with another one. Ask at your garden centre on specific trees. What type of young tree to buy: Trees can be purchased either in either a container or as bare-rooted plants. Either way you should look for well-developed fibrous roots. With container grown trees, check that it’s roots aren't congested and choose younger trees of around one to three years old which tend to get established more rapidly. Obviously, avoid plants that show any sign of disease. Preparing your new fruit tree Soak the roots before planting - bare-root trees can be planted in late autumn or early winter because this is when the tree is in its dormant stage.
breezemagazine34
Don’t plant if there's a frost, just place the roots into moist soil until conditions improve (we do usually have some milder spells during early winter despite the media pundits telling us how bad the winters are becoming here in the UK!). Container grown trees can be planted at any time of year (frost or soil too dry/wet excepted). Locating a spot for your tree: Place your tree in a sunny and sheltered position to give the most time your fruit has to ripen. Dig a hole one third wider than it’s roots (and the same depth) as the tree's roots, firming the bottom of the hole into a slight mound. Insert the support stake and the tree. Fill it back in with soil and mound towards the base of the tree attaching it to the stake with a soft rubber loop (these can be bought from any garden suppliers). If you're growing your tree in a container then half fill a large tub with your soil-based potting compost and place your tree on top. Fill the tub in with more soil to the base of the tree and water well. Feed regularly to keep it growing nicely to fruition. Fruit trees for a small space A useful way to make use of the limited space in a smaller garden is to train the tree along a south-facing wall or fence. Using this method allows for a longer ripening time as the wall will take up the heat and release it slowly during the later part of the day. You must make sure the structure is strong enough to support the tree when in crop of course.
Looking after your tree Protect your fruit tree from moths (these will destroy the fruit and leaves) by applying a grease band about 45cm above soil level to the stake as well as the trunk of your tree. This sticky paper or glue will stop the wingless female moths being able to reach the branches of the tree to mate, leaving its caterpillars to eat the leaves and fruit. These grease bands should be applied in late October and reapplied as and when needed. You should also apply a plant oil-based winter wash in December or January to kill off any overwintering pests. The passion for fruit: passion fruit can also be grown in the UK but they do need the warmest spot in the garden along with good drainage. Hardy plants but can be knocked back in a very bad winter so you may lose them if they are not protected in some way under those conditions. A good long summer as we have had this year and they will ripen and give some good fruits. They are a climbing plant so ideal for a small garden as well. If you are very keen to get some fruit off them then look at building a poly tent and plant in a tub to keep semi covered until good weather arrives. As always - learn about new planting techniques and.... enjoy!

Old songs and new songs.
Heritage Open Day and Call for Volunteers The Attenborough and Erewash Heritage Explorers
The Chorus members returned to their first rehearsal, after the International competition in Canada, looking to gently flex their vocal chords and ease their way back in. The Director had other ideas - a twenty minute warm up and ‘It Was Just One Of Those Things’ which saw them ‘Beginning To See The Light’ two new songs that were brought out for them to wrap their chords around. Not the whole of the songs of course, only a few bars a week to learn, but concentration is required. Then, with new members to assimilate into the chorus and performances to prepare, it is in to the repertoire of songs. It is a good feeling! There was a good turnout on the recent Open night and hopefully one or two will return to experience some more of our style of singing. The Chorus is fifty strong now with ages from 16 to 81, if you fancy having a go come along to a rehearsal at Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ at 7.15.pm any Wednesday. The members are very welcoming.
There is so much we still don’t know about the long and rich history of Attenborough and the Erewash valley. By joining the exiting new volunteers group, the A & E Heritage Explorers, you can help them piece together the missing pieces of the jigsaw. Co-ordinated by Trent & Peak Archaeology in partnership with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, the group will offer the chance take part in a range of activities, acquire new skills and formulate your own research ideas. You don’t need to have any prior knowledge or experience, as professional archaeologists will be on hand to guide you through the multitude of techniques we use to de-code the mysteries of the past.
Like to know more? If you’d like to learn about how you can get involved, or simply have a look at some of the ancient objects that have been found in and around the Attenborough reserve, please go along to the Heritage Open Day on Saturday 2nd November in the conference room of the Attenborough Nature Centre: 11:00am – 12:00pm ‘De-coding the Past’: Short presentation by Trent & Peak Archaeology explaining the nature of archaeological research, possibilities for Attenborough, and information about joining the group. Followed by light refreshments. 12:00pm – 3:00pm Display open to the public. Entry is free, no need to book.
If you cannot make the open day but are interested in joining the A & E Heritage Explorers, please contact Genevieve Carver at Trent & Peak Archaeology, email gcarver@yorkat.co.uk, telephone 0115 896 7400

breeze into winter
Preparing your Home for the Winter months: Tips from Age UK Nottingham and Nottinghamshire’ Unfortunately, the cold winter weather will soon be with us so now is the time to prepare your home for these colder months. Here are a few tips that may help; • Check to see if your radiators feel cold at the top and warm at the bottom. This can be solved by bleeding your radiators to let the air escape. This will instantly make your room feel warmer. • If your radiator feels warm at the top and cold at the bottom this may be due to a build-up of sludge in the system. If this is the case you will need the help of a professional to flush the system. • An annual boiler service ensures your heating systems are not only working properly but are safe to use. This ensures your system is working as efficiently as possible but it can also prevent those unexpected breakdowns. Anyone who services your boiler must be a Gas Safe registered Heating Engineer. • Ensuring your home in properly insulated helps to retain heat in your home. In a home that is not insulated a quarter of the heat is lost through the roof and if your house was built before the 1990s there is a chance that you may not have sufficient wall insulation. By insulating you can save money on your heating bills and have a much warmer home. Age UK Notts actively encourages you to prepare your home for the winter. The charity can provide Information and Advice about grants and schemes that are available to help people to stay warm this winter. For more information call 0115 8440011 If you need the help of a professional trader Age UK Notts can help. The charity runs a directory of local reputable traders and businesses that have all been checked by local Age UK staff. This business directory can be accessed online at www.acbdnottinghamshire.co.uk or by freephone number 0800 011 4643, where a member of Age UK staff will happily search the directory on your behalf.
