e t a l p a n o Notts County Cricket Club have teamed up with Cook4Life East Midlands to encourage families with young children to start cooking healthy, tasty, easy and affordable recipes. The Cook4Life campaign is a part of the nationwide Change4life movement encouraging people to eat well, move more and live longer. Cooking with children from an early age helps them to eat happily and healthily for the rest of their lives. It’s also a fun way for families to spend time together – and it even saves money. In support of the campaign, Notts County Cricketers, Neil Edwards and Akhil Patel, agreed to whip up a quick and delicious summer fruits smoothie - just one of the many recommended Change4Life recipes and cooking videos found on the campaign website www.cook4lifeeastmidlands.org.uk. Nottinghamshire CCC works in partnership with Rushcliffe Borough Council on several community health programmes, including Cricket4Life which gives local children the chance to find out the importance of eating well, as well as being physically active through the sport. Rose Melvin, health development officer at Rushcliffe Borough Council said:“We support the East Midlands Cook4Life campaign as links well with our community Cricket4Life programme. We hope that, through the programme, children will have a better understanding of the need to keep active in different ways to suit them and the importance of eating the right food to ensure that they keep healthy. We know that kids love smoothies, so we will be using the cooking videos as part of our programme to help engage children on this topic”. A Blue Plaque was unveiled last month to commemorate ‘The Guv’nor’ at Barton House. Breeze finds out more... T.H. Barton, who was affectionately known as ’The Guv’nor’, is to be the first person in this area to be commemorated by a new series of ‘Blue Plaques’. The plaque is to be unveiled by Sir Neil Cossons, a hero of the heritage scene, and a former Chairman of English Heritage. The plaque will be attached to the landmark Art Deco Bartons office building built by T H Barton’s bus company, Barton Transport Limited, in its original form in 1913 and modernised in the 1930s and 1960s. T H Barton was so much more than the person who created what was to become Western Europe’s largest independent bus company. He was an enterprising engineer ahead of his time, he was amongst the first in the world to work on the then unnamed Diesel engine. He was one of the first in the world to operate a timetabled bus service, he invented a new alternative fuel system for vehicles during the oil shortages of both world wars. He worked in ships engine rooms across the China Seas. He installed lighting on railway stations across Russia and Siberia. He extended and modified buses to ‘carrying capacities’ not to be repeated elsewhere for decades. He applied himself to improve the comfort for, and service to, his passengers, and they in turn held his Company in great affection. T H Barton was awarded the OBE in 1943 for his services to the passenger transport industry.“For over a forty year period …

he experimented and introduced both zany and forward thinking ideas” When in 1946 T H Barton died one obituary reflected on his life that he was ‘beloved of his employees for his genius as a mechanic, inventor, organiser, and human understanding.’ His large workforce was amongst the many who lined the streets to say goodbye to him. After his death the following was reported to the board of Barton Transport Limited: ‘Several suggestions having been made from outside the Company that a memorial should be instituted and the proposal was approved in principle’ But it seems that issues including the looming Government threat to nationalise the Company were more pressing, and after a year the matter was ‘deferred to future consideration’. So it seems finally that tribute is about to be made. The commemorative plaque will be affixed beside the window of the office T.H Barton left for the last time sixty four years ago. Sir Neil Cossons OBE (born in Nottingham in 1939) is Pro-Provost and Chairman of the Council of the Royal College of Art, of which he has been a Governor since 1989. From 1986 to 2000 he was the Director of the Science Museum, London, UK, the National Museum of Science & Industry (NMSI). (The NMSI includes the National Railway Museum,York and the National Media Museum, Bradford (formerly the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television) Previously he was the first Director of the Ironbridge Museum from 1971 and then at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich from 1983. He was Chairman of English Heritage from 2000 to 2007.The son of a Beeston, Nottinghamshire headmaster and noted historian, Neil Cossons studied historical geography at university and perhaps just as importantly travelled as a boy on Bartons buses. The plaque scheme is a collaborative effort by the Beeston and District Civic Society, the Beeston and District Local History Society and
the Stapleford and District Local History Society, supported by owners and others with the object of celebrating people and place.The plaque is the first of a series planned for South Broxtowe over the coming months.
Heritage Open Days - Saturday September 11th 9am until 1pm. After the huge success of Bartons centenary celebrations in 2008 and to coincide with the plaque unveiling, Bartons are to participate in this year’s Heritage Open Day scheme. Doors will be opening to let people see behind the scenes at the historic ‘Garage’ in Chilwell. The Company’s Directors over the last 100 years showed great foresight in retaining for future generations a unique and extensive record of the pioneering days of bus travel. Many of these documents, films and memorabilia have never been shown in public before. Furthermore, during the Heritage Open Day at The Garage there will be additional display material from other companies from the East Midlands who had a huge impact on the world: Raleigh, with their bicycle production. Just like everyone else, our children need a place to play, laugh and love life. A place where they and their families are cared for and supported. Welcome to Rainbows – the East Midlands’ hospice for children and young people. Sadly, some children simply don’t live long enough. Since 1994 Rainbows has opened their doors and hearts to those children and the people who love them most. And now more than ever, they need your help to keep on bringing care and happiness to the children and their families. As the East Midlands’ only hospice for children and young people, Rainbows is a place where life-limited children and their families can take a break from life’s worries and heartaches. Rainbows £4m development will soon be open It’s a sad fact that there is now so much demand for Rainbows’ services that they have spent £4m expanding and renovating their building to provide new facilities and accommodate more children and young adults. Rainbows has more than 15 years experience of caring for life-limited children from the East Midlands.Their wonderful new wing will further benefit the children and enable them to care for young people over the age of eighteen. It can be difficult to maintain a focus on the normal activities of daily life whilst a child is receiving terminal or palliative care. A child’s own priority would not necessarily be their physical needs or medical treatment. Play within the hospice provides sensory stimulation.The provision of more specialist

equipment (including a hydrotherapy pool, multisensory room and soft play room) and the opportunity for extra social activities, together with improved facilities, will allow the children to behave like children. Six extra bedrooms will allow more children and their families to stay at the hospice – a real benefit for everyone allowing Rainbows to offer a lot more care. Although essential end-of-life care is always available, the number of nights for specialist respite care has reduced.The new wing added to the current building increases the number of nights for respite stays. This vital project will help enrich and improve the short lives of so many children. Together we can give even more Rainbows cares for over 250 families every year, helping them to have fun and really enjoy life through our specialist multi-sensory facilities, adapted accommodation, hydrotherapy pool and music room to name a few. Fancy a night at the pictures 1950’s style? Breeze finds out more...

During the austere post war days of the early 1950’s, the brightest aspect of many people’s life was a visit to the “pictures”. It was a temporary escape from the routine of everyday life. Beeston boasted four cinemas and business was good.TV was just coming in but the ‘pictures’ was still king. Many people still look back at those days with fond memories; there was always some thing magical about a ‘night at the pictures’. Beeston Probus Club and The Chilwell Arts Theatre have joined forces to recreate that special 1950’s feeling. On Saturday October 9th they are bringing one of the greatest Hollywood films from that era to the big screen, at the Paradiso Cinema, based at the Chilwell School. What a great picture, probably the best Hollywood musical of them all. Starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds, this is a real happy” feel good “ experience. ‘Singing In The Rain’ was first released in April 1952 and was a world wide smash hit. Whilst being a musical it is also a mild ‘send up’ of Hollywood.The story follows the trials and tribulations of a film company coming to terms with the transition from silent to “talkies “and is set in the 1920’s. Most of the musical numbers have stood the test of time to become standard favourites . The title song is iconic and is featured in the popular dance sequence, performed by Gene Kelly when he literally sings in the rain.The story goes that this sequence was filmed in a single takem - some achievement! Donald O’Connor gets in on the act too when he dances to “Make ‘em Laugh”. It’s the one where he runs up the wall and performs an amazing back somersault. This film was the then unknown Debbie Reynolds’ first starring role, she is still working today. So if you are nostalgic for a touch of the past or if you are too young to remember but wonder how your parents or grandparents used to enjoy their nights at the “pictures”, why not go along and see. Join the special guest Jacky Williams, deputy Mayor of Broxtowe for this terrific night. All profits from the night will be donated to Skcin, the Karen Clifford skin cancer charity. It was set up in remembrance of Karen by her husband Richard. Based locally in Nottingham, it has become a national organisation. Its chairman is John Holmes, the well known broadcaster and television presenter. There are currently 70,000 cases of skin cancer a year reported in the UK resulting in 2000 deaths. Civil ceremony: An increasingly popular choice since 1994 when a change in the law permitted weddings to take place in venues other than a registry office. This means that some of the most beautiful places in the country have become hot wedding venues. Choice of location comes down to a mixture of the emotional, convenience and the desire to make the day a memorable one - it is well worth taking days out to site see potential places to gain a feel and then decide afterwards over a nice meal with your partner! The cost of a civil ceremony varies with district and the fees for the registrar are higher due to the travelling involved - but not excessively so. You will have to inform your home town’s registry even when marrying under another
town’s authority. Approximate amount for paperwork in a civil wedding is around £250. Overseas wedding: A more popular choice for those with either small families, or a wish to combine the wedding with the honeymoon. About 30,000 UK couples now marry overseas and often take advantage of packaged weddings which remove the hassle and stress from the situation. All the razzamataz of the big day is arranged with you when you get there, with a wedding coordinator who meets you and helps with the finer details such as choice of flowers etc and even witnesses if need be! Invites: Many options available from stationary suppliers who keep sample books and custom requirements. Do-it yourself options, or hand made invites are becoming increasingly popular, as this offer the couple the personal touch. Decorations: Themed weddings are on the increase, although the traditional can benefit from excellant decor to compliment your chosen colours.Table and venue decorations can transform a room into your own dream wedding. Attention to this can make all the difference for the ‘wow’ factor. Cake: A good cakemaker will advise you on type, size etc and will also have a catalogue of examples they have created as well as magazine samples to work from. Visiting your cakemaker on their premises is the best advice. Photography: Take a look at their previous work. Check out their credentials. When you have chosen, be very clear about the type of photographs you want showing examples from magazines is best. Jewellery: ‘Till death do us part’ that’s how long you’ll be wearing your rings! So make sure you choose the rights ones. Individually made designs are extra special. Or again, opt for the more traditional designs.

New President of the Inner Wheel Club of Church Wilne, Pauline Sheehy-Smith was pleased to welcome members to the July meeting, including a new member Angela Beal who was inducted at the meeting and visiting District Chairman Elaine Harrison who was there to give a talk. After the Club business, Pauline mentioned several visits she would like to include in her year such as The Galleries of Justice, Nottingham Caves and the Houses of Parliament amongst several others. Any monies raised this year will go to Pauline’s chosen charity ‘Air Ambulance’. The club’s guest, Elaine, proceeded to give her talk on Mary Talbot, Bess of Hardwick’s daughter. Elaine was dressed in period costume to enrich the experience for her audience and this was made and embroidered by herself. Club members were all enthralled and fascinated by her tales. Other events held by the club recently was a ‘Meet the President’s Day’ which was held at Rotary President Barry Woodhead’s home as this was a joint occasion. It was very enjoyable and thanks go to Jan and Barry. Also held was an ‘In-Out Meal’ for outgoing President Margaret Norman and incoming President Pauline. Committee was held at The Bulls Head, Breaston which was much enjoyed by everyone. Past President Margaret concluded her year by sending cheques to Treetops Hospice and Borrowbrook Home Link. Earlier this year she had also presented cheques to NSPCC and to her son Gareth for the charity ‘Balls to Poverty’. In return Gareth presented Margaret with a signed commemorative photograph from Nottingham Forest thanking Inner Wheel for their support and generosity.

Architect in the House is a fundraising campaign run by Shelter and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Architect in the House is entering its 14th year and has raised over £1 million for homeless and badly housed people. Architect in the House is an innovative scheme that matches homeowners with an RIBA chartered architect, who has given up their time, for an hour-long design consultation. In exchange, the homeowner makes a suggested minimum donation of £40 to Shelter. This innovative scheme has also directly introduced over 40,000 homeowners to the benefits of employing an architect and helped them reach a new and exciting target audience for Shelter. This year, celebrity architect and TV ‘Home Show’guru George Clarke has given the scheme his backing and at present they are now working on a huge PR campaign to spread the word about this fantastic initiative. Shelter believes everyone needs a home in a place where they can thrive. They help over 170,000 people a year fight for their rights, get back on their feet, and find and keep a home. They also tackle the root causes of bad housing by campaigning for new laws, policies, and solutions. Their work won’t stop until there’s a home for everyone. Please help them. No one chooses to be homeless! When you think of the Homeless do you typically think of people sleeping rough on the streets? A group of people are trying to change things in Long Eaton - you can show your support.... Individuals loose their homes for a wide range of reasons – unemployment, falling out with family, domestic violence, mental health problems, being evicted by their bank, building society or landlord. The Homeless are not just ‘rough sleepers’ but people who ‘sofa surf’ – stay with friends or acquaintances sleeping on floors or sofas. Homeless leads to a rapid downward spiral that is very difficult to recover from emotionally, physically or spiritually. Once homeless the world can feel like it’s against you! While the Homeless may feel helpless the Canaan Trust seeks to ensure they will not be left hopeless. The Canaan Trust is a local Christian Charity that has two properties in Long Eaton. Jordan House is a nine bedroom large property with shared facilities staffed 24 hours 7 days a week. The other property is a shared house having three bedrooms with shared lounge, kitchen and bathroom. Both properties are situated close to Long Eaton town centre and its amenities. The Canaan Trust is about to commence a £40,000 lounge extension at Jordan House on Main Street. One of the Charity’s Trustees, Jay Lane, has undertaken to swim the Channel, toward the end of September, to help raise the money towards the cost of this essential extension. ENJOY A RIOT OF COLOUR IN LATE SUMMER Don’t be downhearted if your summer borders look a little faded, because you can still have a riot of colour in late summer if you plant carefully. Blazing crocosmias and red hot pokers, burnt orange heleniums and deep yellow rudbeckias will brighten up any border at this time of year partnered with impressive foliage plants such as the smoke bush (Cotinus) and cordyline. Dahlias, hollyhocks, Michaelmas daisies, nasturtiums, day lilies and summer-flowering euphorbias provide much-needed freshness. Many combine well with perennial verbenas and grasses. Try growing thistle-like Cynara (a group which includes the cardoon and globe artichoke), which produces handsome foliage and dramatic purple thistle flower heads at the back of a border to add summer interest to shrubs, or allow them to grow through cottage garden favourites. Plant sun-loving cone flowers (Echinacea), in

shades of pink and white. The daisy-like flowers and height (they can grow to 120cm (4ft) tall) mean they work well towards the back of the border, they attract bees and butterflies and add impact alongside globe thistle (Echinops) and monarda. You may have to go to a specialist grower to find perennial sunflowers (Helianthus) but it will be worth it for the zingy yellow blooms they produce in late summer. Like their annual cousins, they like a warm, sunny spot, but perennial sunflowers aren’t fussy about soil provided they have good drainage. The flowers are more subtle than those of the annuals and there are numerous varieties, ranging from H. salicifolius, a tall plant with small daisy-like blooms which last well into autumn, to the golde yellow double variety ‘Lodden Gold’. Red Schizostylis coccinea ‘Major’, russetcoloured Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’, cool yellow Phygelius aequalis ‘Yellow Trumpet’, blue Agapanthus Headbourne Hybrids and bright blue Aster frikartii ‘Monch’ all provide late colour. Dark-leaved caster oil plants and orangeflowered dahlias such as D.
‘David Howard’ provide striking colour, along with tall red hot pokers such as Kniphofia rooperi and the deep red D. ‘Altami Corsair’, all of which are attention grabbers. Use drifts of perennial border phloxes in the middle of borders to provide intense pools of summer colour. Herbaceous potentillas or small asters can be planted in front to hide the bare phlox stems. Phloxes are ideal follow-on plants for poppies and shouldn’t need staking except i windy gardens. Don’t let them dry out in summer as they need a mois soil. If you want to add late summer-flowering plants to an existing border, buy as many of the same colour and variety as you can afford and repeat-plant them through the border to unify it and develop a sense of rhythm. Such plants will need to have a distinct colour and reasonably long flowering season. Keep it simple and remember that limiting the colour palette can greatly increase the impact. In general, when mixing colours, aim either for all pastel shades - pale pinks, blues, mauves, creams - or strong contrasting colours - reds, yellows, strong blues and purples. If you mix strong colours with pastel ones, the bright colours will swamp the more subtle ones.

1. Bury garlic cloves at the feet of rose bushes to keep blackspot away (garlic is an accumulator of sulphur, an effective antidote to blackspot).
2. Plant onions and carrots together as carrot and onion flies become confused by this intercropping. 3. If you have mole hills in your lovely lawn, invest in some mothballs to stick down the holes as moles can’t stand the smell.

BEST OF THE BUNCH - Agapanthus I always seem to see agapanthus at their best in warmer climes, but it is possible to have plenty of success with these glorious globes of blue or white flowers in this country, as they come into their own in late summer. Growing to around 80cm (31in) tall, the flowers appear above a fountain of strappy foliage in August and, while they’ve a reputation for being tender, some varieties such as the Headbourne Hybridswhile and the deciduous A. campanulatus can withstand frost. In milder gardens they are long-lived perennials which require little maintenance, while in cooler areas they will need a winter mulch of bracken or can be grown in containers which can be moved under cover in winter. They should be grown in an open, sunny spot in well-drained soil and make good plant partners for perennials including phlox and hemerocallis. If you’re growing them in pots, plant them on into bigger containers each spring using loambased compost and add some slow-release fertiliser.

GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT Blackberries (Rubus) They’re so expensive in the shops yet so easy to grow and go wonderfully with apples in pies and crumbles or in a combination of summer fruit dishes or even as a stand-alone fruit in mousses. Unlike other fruits, blackberries will do well in most areas and soils and one plant should feed a family. Grow bushes against a post-and-wire fence, training the stems out and leaving a wide enough path for weeding and harvesting. Canes should be well mulched in spring with compost and then fed with blood, fish and bone in late April. Fruits should be ready for picking from July to September, but make sure you protect the ripening berries from birds by covering the plants with netting. As new stems grow, keep them tied to the vertical post and completely separate from the horizontally trained stems which produced this year’s fruits.Then, when it comes to pruning, it’s clear what has to be cut back, which is the old stems which have cropped.Then lower the next batch into position and tie them in place. Good varieties include ‘Black Butte’, which produces huge fruits of excellent quality, and ‘Veronique’, a thornless, compact variety which bears large fruits in late summer.
WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK • Ensure birds and other wildlife have fresh water and keep ponds topped up. • Prune rambling roses after flowering. • Collect ripening seeds from plants you want to propagate. • Take cuttings from tender perennials such as pelargoniums and fuchsias. • Lift and dry onions. • Water and feed tomatoes at regular intervals, and remove yellowing leaves. • Plant new strawberry plants, keeping them well watered. :• Sow parsley and pot up herbs for later use. • Continue to weed borders, watching out for any self-sown seedlings in the process.They can throw up all sorts of variations in flower colour. • Apply lawn feed using a fertiliser with a high phosphate content to promote root growth and toughen the grass for the winter. • Trim faded lavender spikes with hand shears, but avoid cutting into old wood or it won’t recover. • Give hedges their final trim as they will not grow too much after this. • Cut back wayward perennials which have collapsed or spread over the lawn.

Anyone who has ever grown a courgette plant knows they can produce a glut of fruits. Stapleford’s Dig In community allotment presents this tasty recipe for courgette bread as an alternative to using them as a side vegetable. Layer 1lb coarsely grated courgettes in a colander. Lightly salt and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse; pat dry. Mix 1and half lb plain flour, 4 tablespoons grated parmesan or hard cheese, and 2 sachets fast-action yeast; season with black pepper.

'Attenborough Colts U11 Blue are looking forward to the new season in the YEL Saturday Division 2 league. The team are now on their summer break before training begins in earnest for the new season.They have a number of pre-season friendlies set up with teams from around the area and are also facing the new challenge of moving to the 11 a side game, and mastering the off side rule. Attenborough Colts play their matches at Long Lane in Attenborough but league opponents from September will see the team travel to Southwell and beyond as well as visiting the teams they may draw in the FA shield which they have also entered for. Stir 2 tablespoons olive oil and the courgettes into the flour. Mix together, adding sufficient lukewarm water to form into a firm dough. Knead on a lightly-floured surface until smooth. Return to the bowl, and leave in a warm place, covered with cling film, until it has risen to double size. Grease and line a 9 inch round sandwich tin. Preheat the oven to 400˚F/200˚C/Gas 6. Turn out the dough, punch down and knead lightly. Form into eight balls, flatten, and place in the tin with seven of the circles arranged around one in the centre. Brush with milk and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Allow to rise again, then bake for 25 minutes, until golden brown. Cool slightly in the tin, then turn out to cool further. Enjoy this tear-and-share bread for eight people as an accompaniment to soup or casserole.

Last month saw the best of Britain’s young swimmers come together to compete at the ASA National Age Group Swimming Championships 2010 at Ponds Forge Pool Sheffield, in which every Derventio eXcel swimmer that qualified won a medal. First in for Derventio was James Latham who was competing in his first ever nationals. Next in the 13 years 200m Backstroke, Eve rose to the challenge and stepped up at Nationals to swim a Personal Best time by 1.28 seconds to 2.27.45. Lucy Wood, improved on her personal best time with an excellent 2nd 100m in the 13 years 200m Backstroke. Coach Kim Hill says “I want to thank all that came to support us during the week, particularly those who came up on the last two days to support the swimmers and their tremendous swims.They already know this but I could not be prouder of them. Not only have they all stepped up, with over half of the team competing in their first nationals individually, it shows the strength and quality that Derventio have. All swimmers were there to support each other and to have fun whilst working towards some amazing achievements.The team spirit and dedication to themselves and each other could not be in more abundance!”
Oliver Davidson 12 from Castle Donington a medal winner at last years Age Group Swimming Championships, has been invited to attend the England Development program level 1 camps later this year. Oliver is Jr Captain of Long Eaton SC and trains with Derventio eXcel the Derbyshire performance swim squad. He is resting from swimming for two weeks as are the rest of the squad in preparation for the season ahead.
