BEST FOOT FORWARD With its quirky premises of a post-war pre-fab, its corrugated iron roof and its iconic ‘woody’ doll in the window, The Beeston Cobbler is among Beeston’s oldest shops. Residing in its location on Station Road since 1947 the shop has become a town favourite with customers regaling tales of how they’ve been visiting for decades with the smell of polish being a nostalgic reminder of childhood shopping trips. However, news hit earlier this year that the land where the shop currently sits is being sold for development forcing the business to find alternative premises. Fortunately, a few yards down the road at 147-149 Station Road, the shop that was formerly U2 canvas store and before that Lighthouse Antiques, was vacant and the owners have been giving it a little TLC to make it their new home with some exciting new additions to existing services. Proprietor Daniel Fox commented on the upcoming move; “Along with our customers, we loved our old premises but with change comes opportunity. Although it’s the end of an era, it’s the start of a new one and the new shop is much bigger giving us the chance to try some new things on top of everything we currently offer.” The Beeston Cobbler will be opening the doors of its new shop at 147-149 Station Road for the first time on Monday 2nd September offering shoe repairs, key cutting, watch batteries, leather repairs as well as a vintage section and a brand new range of fine leather shoes by Barker of Northampton.. For us it’s personal
For us it’s global
“Our centre, has only been open for a few months but it has been very successful in helping many soldiers and their families in the East Midlands, including several veterans, whose age ranges from 17 to 75, who’ve previously not ventured beyond their immediate surroundings and those who have been injured in past and current conflicts. The key is our volunteers are all local, mostly with some connection to the Armed Forces, who are doing their bit to just to help those who are a little less fortunate than themselves, need a bit of a boost, fancy a quick brew, or just need a little advice on where to go next, in their lives or their careers”.
“As a charity, here at Forces in the community we have an on going fundraising programme, our biggest event so far is going to be ‘Run forces run’ on 29th September. A team of our fundraisers will be taking part in the Robin Hood marathon, taking place in Nottingham. Could you become a ChildLine volunteer and help support children through our helpline or Childline Schools Service?
CHILDLINE HELPLINE ChildLine is the UK’s free, 24-hour service for children and young people who need to talk, whatever their worry. Since the service launched in 1986 we’ve helped 2.9 million young people, over the phone and online. Young people contact ChildLine about a range of issues, from bullying and family relationship issues to self harm and abuse. Although ChildLine is most well known as a phone service, last year nearly half of the counselling interactions took place with young people online, via chat or email. The East Midlands ChildLine base in Nottingham is one of 12 bases in the country, and this year celebrates its 25th anniversary. Over 130 volunteers from Nottinghamshire and the surrounding counties regularly give their time to support young people either as a counsellor or as a ChildLine switchboarder. We want to make sure that we continue to be there whenever a child needs us. If you, or someone you know, would like to find out more about volunteering at the Nottingham ChildLine base, please contact local volunteer coordinator Cat Wynne on 0207 539 6016 or cwynne@nspcc.org.uk. CHILDLINE SCHOOLS SERVICE The ChildLine Schools Service is a ground-breaking service that aims to ensure all children have an understanding of abuse in all its forms - including bullying - and know where to go for help if they need it.

By 2016, we hope to be visiting every primary school in the UK, including those in Nottinghamshire, at least once every two years. In doing so, we passionately believe that we can start a societal change that will bring about a long term reduction in child cruelty. We’ve already made a great start in Nottinghamshire, having delivered our empowering assemblies and workshops to over 11,500 local primary school children. But we need more volunteers to help us to visit all 381 local schools, reaching over 88,000 local children. You don’t need to have previous experience of working with children to become a ChildLine Schools Service volunteer. If you would like to find out more about how to get involved, please contact local ChildLine Schools Service area coordinator Emma Grishin on 0115 9258602 or egrishin@nspcc.org.uk. “I have to say, I think the ChildLine Schools Service is quite frankly ground breaking. Next to being a Mum, volunteering for the service is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done in my life. It’s so amazing to watch children being empowered and to show them they should never put up with unkind, abusive behaviour. We’re creating a better future for them and others. It’s breath-taking to watch.” Claire – CLSS volunteer Full training and support is given to all our ChildLine volunteers. ChildLine is a service provided by the NSPCC. breeze what’s on In celebration of reaching forty years Hemlock Garden Club are holding a special event, inviting all present, past and potential future members...why not join them?
Back in October 1973 a group of 25 garden enthusiasts got together to form a local gardening club - originally meeting in Gardeners Cottage almost opposite the Hemlock Stone which provided the idea for the name. The club has gone from strength to strength and currently has over 50 members. It provides a programme of talks during the winter months and outings to interesting gardens, stately homes and garden shows over the summer. This year we have enjoyed a very cold trip to Easton Walled Gardens, a damp trip to Lea gardens, a very wet evening visit to Woodside Cottage, Newstead (where the cosy coffee and cake in the lounge after was very welcome!) and a very sunny outing to Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire (shown). “We will be celebrating our anniversary by holding a social evening (including AGM) on Nov 21 at the Bramcote Memorial Hall at 7:30pm to which all past/present/future members are invited to attend. Please let us know if you are intending to come so we have an idea of numbers.” Meetings at Bramcote Memorial Hall will resume on Sept 20 at 7:30pm with a talk on Artistry with flowers by Hilary Brian. Visitors will be very welcome, cost £2. See www.hemlockgardenclub.co.uk or e-mail enquiries@hemlockgardenclub.co.uk for more information.

Bluecoat Academy warmly invite you to join them for their Open Evening on Thursday 19th September. This is an opportunity for parents and students to look around Bluecoat Academy, meet the staff and students as well as explore their buildings and experience a little of what goes on inside them! Bluecoat’s premises span across two campuses, Aspley Lane and Wollaton Park. “We are especially keen this year to show you our new building at Wollaton Park. This state of the art facility is now completed. The rooms are bright, airy and overlook the beautiful Wollaton Park itself providing an ideal environment for outstanding learning and teaching to take place. All that remains over the next few months is for last refurbishments of the Great Room, the Learning Resource Centre and Learning Support to be completed. You can see from the photo below we are very proud of our new facilities and the students are already benefitting from them and love being in them and using them. Bluecoat Academy has a long and proud history spanning over 300 years. It has a reputation for academic excellence which is borne out by the way our results have increased year on year for the last three years. This year 95% of our students achieved 5 or more A*-C grades, a record and a fantastic achievement! Bluecoat is about much more than academic progress although this is a very important element of our work. Each student is nurtured and valued as an individual and we work closely with our young people to bring out their gifts and talents. This year students have tried their hands at canoeing, ice-skating, zumba, kick boxing, charity community activities, street dance, horse riding and so many more. In addition we have a football, cricket and street dance academy that meet in the mornings before the start of the day. As a Church of England Academy we are passionate about our faith in God. Acts of Worship are lively and often student led. The Christian Union is very active and runs groups for different ages. All our students get involved in a range of activities raising money for a variety of charities. In the course of the year we have raised over £5000 for local, national and international charities. We look forward to welcoming you to Bluecoat Academy so that you can see for yourself what makes us so special.

breezecompetition The award winning ‘The People’s Theatre Company’ are proud to present The Vicar of Dibley and the cast are all very excited....! The cast are being directed by the wonderful and talented Mr Robbie Robb. His choice of cast has been very accurate to the characters behaviours. Paula Smith who plays Geraldine is, in real life a church warden, who sits in on monthly parish council meetings and she says “Thank fully they are nothing like the Dibley ones – at least not very often! I do lead church services on a regular basis and run Brownies, attend and lead summer camps teaching drama skills”. The cast and crew come from Nottingham and Derbyshire and as far away as Norfolk. In preparations for the auditions the cast have watch hours of Vicar of Dibley videos and some are finding delivering lines hard whilst keeping a straight face, but they promise they will be focused during the actual show. There is an eagerness from the cast members to get in to batty and extrovert personae, which they are thoroughly enjoying within rehearsals. There are plenty of funny and cheeky lines throughout this play and of course a lot of quality non-verbal acting. Cast members (both old and new) have enjoyed getting to know each other and working together and this is evident in the way they execute the comedy timing and delivery of lines. Cast members have a vast variety of performing skills from drama, comedy, singing, pantomime, dance, combat fighting, drama degrees and membership of other local performing groups.
A show not to be missed! When we say Vicar of Dibley everyone associates it with Dawn French. When we mention “Black Adder”, Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “Love, Actually” we are talking Richard Curtis the talented creator and author of all these along with The Vicar of Dibley. With the first show being shown on television in 1994, four Christmas Specials and two Comic Relief Special Shows to raise money for charity in 1997 and 1999 it’s quite an accolade. All the royalties from this show performed by The People’s Theatre Company have been donated to Comic Relief. This script has been adapted by Ian Gower and Paul Carpenter for the stage and has been received very successfully as a play by audiences. The royalties from the adaptation have also been donated to Comic Relief. The 11 strong cast including Geraldine (Paula Smith) make for an extremely entertaining play. David Horton (Phil Ashford, farmer, counsellor, Chairman of the parish council and local pillar of the community (or so he thinks). breeze appeal The Great Nottingham Bake Off. Youth volunteers from the National Citizen Service held Bake Off and Tea Party raising over £200 for Age UK Notts. Ten local teenagers organised the events as part of the nationwide NCS scheme. The project is a Cabinet Office initiative which encourages young people to volunteer in the community. Mentored by local teacher Debbie Murfin and law student Jacqueline Yawson the group held an all-day Bake Off. They baked for a solid five hours to raise enough money to hold a free tea party for local older people. The Tea Party, held at Sneinton Market was a huge success. Over 150 older people from across Nottinghamshire came to enjoy the festivities. As well as offering free tea and cake, the volunteers got the crowd dancing by playing their requested songs. Abigail Nichols, youth volunteer said ‘We wanted to The Big Knit is ten years young! One million hats support Age UK Notts because we felt, as younger needed for bumper birthday celebration... people we should give back to the generation who have provided for us. Older people and their cause can why not join in! often be ignored so we wanted to do something to show our appreciation. We enjoyed the Tea Party as For a decade, budding milliners up and down the country have been much as they did and I will definitely volunteer again in supporting Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit by knitting funky little hats as part the future.’ of Age UK’s Spread the Warmth campaign. Over the last ten years, 4 million hats have been lovingly created and this year Age UK is calling on nimblefingered knitters all over the country to whip out their wool and needles and help create one million little woolly hats in 2013. Knitters across the UK are being asked to flex their creative muscles and knit little woolly hats which will adorn innocent smoothie bottles in stores nationwide from November. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, innocent will give 25p to Age UK’s Spread the Warmth campaign, helping to fund national and local winter projects. Age UK Notts has been tasked with knitting 12,090 hats by 16th September and needs knitters of all ages to help make this a reality. Mick Tinkler, Chief Executive at Age UK Notts, said: “People in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have been supporting The Big Knit for the past five years. Winter can be a really difficult time of the year for many older people, so it’s really important that local knitters get behind The Big Knit to help raise funds for vital local winter projects. We need knitters in the City and the County to help us reach our goal of 12,090 miniature hats so that we can run services like our Winter Warmth Project which focuses on keeping older people warm and healthy during the colder seasons.” James Peach, innocent drinks, said: “To celebrate The Big Knit’s 10th birthday this year we’re planning our biggest ever Big Knit. It’s a fantastic way to get creative, knit a little hat to adorn a smoothie bottle and raise money for Age UK to help older people stay warm in winter. We’re massively grateful to everyone who joins in and helps make this year’s campaign a huge success.” Knitters can contact Age UK Notts to get a free hat pattern. For those who don’t fancy making a hat themselves, wool and needles can be donated to Age UK Notts, Bradbury House, 12 Shakespeare Street, Nottingham, NG1 4FQ to help others reach the target, or a £3 donation can be made to Age UK Notts by texting ‘AGED05 £3’ to ‘70070’ . For more information on The Big Knit contact Linda Taylor at Age UK Notts on 0115 8414 468. Please send completed hats to Age UK Notts at Bradbury House, 12 Shakespeare Street, Nottingham, NG1 4FQ.

Mick Tinkler, Chief Executive at Age UK Notts said ‘It is inspirational to see younger people doing such good work in the community. As a local independent charity we rely on being able to raise £3 million every year and the funds raised by NCS mean we are one step closer to our goal. Events like the Tea Party enable older people to make new friends and socialise, something which we are championing through our Campaign to End Loneliness.’ For more information on fundraising or volunteering for Age UK Notts or the Campaign to End Loneliness please call 0115 844 011.

breeze competition THE LOST CITY ADVENTURE GOLF OPENS WITH A SWING! As Nottingham’s newest leisure attraction opened its doors, enthusiastic adventurers flocked to The Cornerhouse and queued up eagerly, all keen to be the first to play a round at The Lost City adventure golf. Breeze gives you the chance to win a pair of tickets The first indoor course of its kind in the East Midlands, the Inca-themed, state-of-the-art adventure golf complex features two 18-hole courses. Whether you choose to play Temple Trail or Sacred Skull Pass, both courses boast dramatic interactive features such as talking Inca statues and musical landscaping.
Towering ancient walls complete with animated snakes and moving rocks transport players into a lost world of epic adventure, where they can discover their inner ‘Indiana Jones’ – and test their putting skills at the same time. The brainchild of entrepreneurs Lane Scott and Barry Hobson, The Lost City is an activity for all ages, combining theme parkesque surroundings with a game that anyone can play. Indeed, Lane says this simplicity is its main appeal. “Adventure golf is for everyone, it’s not about how good you are at golf but about having fun and giving it a go,” he explained. “This is one game where age isn’t an advantage and children are just as likely to beat their competitive Dads or teenage siblings. In The Lost City anything can happen!” Intrepid pioneers of all ages have already given the course their seal of approval. One group of keen explorers even took the day off work to be the first to play and two intrepid adventure golfers drove over from Birmingham to try out the courses. Owen Johnson and his dad Paul are avid adventure golfers, members of the British Minigolf Association and have played all over the UK in competitions. The Lost City adventure golf can be found on the lower ground floor of Nottingham’s Cornerhouse. Along with the two 18-hole courses is a licensed bar serving drinks and snacks. breeze pro Dental disease is still the most overlooked pet health issue – have your pets checked for free and get great discounts on dentistry.
Most dogs and cats get dental disease at some point in their lives. Dental problems can start at a very young age although they are more common in older pets. Unfortunately, it is very rare for owners to notice the problem until it becomes extreme. Usually the affected pet has had years of pain before the problem is apparent to the untrained eye. Owners may notice signs like smelly breath, reduced activity or reduced sociability of their pet but often put this down to ageing rather than pain. Sometimes nothing is noticed until the problem has been fixed and suddenly the dog or cat acts like they are 5 years younger. The best way to make sure your pet is not suffering with unknown tooth problems is to have the teeth checked by a vet. To make sure that all pets have access to a proper assessment of their teeth, Churchcroft Vets are offering to check all dogs, cats and rabbits teeth for free until the end of October. One of their vets George, Jess or Jon will give any pets booked in for a FREE tooth check a thorough dental examination and discuss any problems with you. Any pets needing dental attention will be offered a great discount on the work needed (up to 40% or even more) to make sure this is available to everyone. Once all problems are resolved Churchcroft will then plan with you the best way to prevent further problems occurring – according to the specific needs of your best friend. To take advantage of this excellent opportunity for a free check, call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855

It’s not only two-legged creatures that are being affected by the austere times in which we find ourselves, but the financial pressures are also affecting those with four legs or wings. The Radcliffe on Trent Animal Shelter has become a cornerstone of the community over the past 50 years and the present regime have raised both its profile and conditions to a level that not only benefits its inhabitants but also its visitors. The centre however is currently feeling the effects of the economic downturn with more and more animals being brought in, but less visitors who are in a position to help or adopt them. Contrary to popular belief, the shelter is self-funding and governed by a local board of trustees. The shelter’s financial ties with the RSPCA are minimal in that they only receive payments for certain boarding arrangements and RSPCA Inspector assistance. The shelter is licensed to house 90 dogs, 90 cats and unlimited miscellaneous animals with their new cat pod considered as one of the most up to date in Europe. Under the guidance of the trustees, the present General Manager,David Stearn, took over control in 2006 and since his arrival the shelter has gone thru an overhaul which has seen it progress from an outdated complex in need of some serious TLC into one of the finest-equipped animal rescue centres in the UK. David’s and the Trustees’ vision has been possible due to the shelter’s staff and volunteers working tirelessly to raise funds via attending major county shows, carnivals, sponsorships, presenting open days and special events at the shelter. Many members of staff such as Rowena Hammond, Ella Herring, Helen Ackroyd and Caroline Parker have all put in over 20 years of dedicated service each. Be they financial, food, old towels or dog walking, any contributions made to the centre ensure that the residents are well cared for both mentally and physically and greatly appreciated by our furry and feathered friends. On the 14th September from 12noon - 4pm, the shelter celebrates it’s 50th anniversary with A Fun Dog Show, “Have A Go” Dog Agility, Stalls, Refreshments and much more! Admission adults £1, children free. At 8pm it’s “PARTY IN THE TENT” time when you can bring your own tables, chairs, drinks and food and enjoy a great evening’s entertainment with the fantastic party band “JUICE” and rock ‘n’ roll legend Vince Eager as your host. breezegardening We look at the fistrt stages of planning ahead for the Autumn & beyond - keeping our flowers going. Well, what a summer we’ve had! We should all by now have enjoyed a full bloom in our gardens and to still be able to savour our hard work earlier in the year. We want to continue our enjoyment though as we slowly move into the autumn period. This is not a time to feel gloomy but to take advantage of the really nice conditions we’ve been having by planning ahead and planting ahead to keep our little patch looking lovely well into September and October. When annual flowering plants start to get exhausted your garden will start to look a little wilted too - if you don’t have something ready to fill their role! This is where perennials and hardy perennials come in: they can bring on the colour when it gets cooler. Things to do in September: • Plant out bulbs ready for next spring • Sow hardy annuals ready for next spring. Plan ahead! These can be sown in pots and then planted out in spring or sown in the ground and covered with cloches or fleece if frost is expected (when the young plants appear). Sow in the warmer soil conditions present in early September so that germination can take place. Avoid fertiliser on the ground where you sow as this can lead to leafy growth whereas we will want flowery growth. Cast thinly over the area you wish to grow and then cover with a thin layer of soil. You can alternatively scrape a small groove and sprinkle in rows then rake over (make zigzag or irregular grooves as this will look more natural when the plants grow). Watch out for slugs and fungal attack as the
breezemagazine 34
young plants grow; good circulation (if plants are covered) and good cleanliness (if planting in pots) is key to prevention. You can spray with a copper based fungicide of you do have problems. Plants to try are Ageratum, Balloon flower, Poppy, Butterfly weed, Cornflower, Delphinium and many others to choose from so you can really have some fun in trying out new varieties. Of course there are many other ways to create texture & a sense of life in the garden such using evergreens. These can complement any flowering shrubs you may already have such Viburnum and serve as a backdrop to winter flowering plants such as Jelena Witch Hazel which can flower through the darkest months. Another good shrub is Chimonanthus for winter colour. Don’t forget to look at your shelter whilst we’re at it: this is a good time whilst it’s fine to work on any areas that get a bit of a bashing come the stormier weather. It’s far easier and more enjoyable to be working outdoors on this sort of project than when it is inclement and you will tend to do a better job as a diy’er as a result. Did you read our issue about shelter? We covered this in our March 2012 issue as well as other aspects such as drainage - always important when planning ahead. What you should be looking at next is what went wrong this time so that you can put it right for next season; did your planting not work out last winter? Now is the time to look at why and correct it. Did this spring bring you lots of colour? No? Then now is the time to look at which bulbs to plant ready for next spring gardening is not instant and that is part of the appeal, to see the rewards of your efforts as an ongoing process. An antidote to all the rushing around that we do these days!
As always learn as you try new plants & techniques around the garden, and enjoy! A QUICK REFRESH OF PLANT TYPES Annuals: Single season plants. Sown outdoors in spring, a Half Hardy Annual is normally raised under glass before being planted out due to frost danger. Bedding Plants: Annuals, Biennials or Perennial Planted out in autumn or spring to provide a temporary display - ‘summer’ plants in plain speak. Hardy: Perennial or annual Not effected by frost or colder temperatures. Perennial A non-woody plant which flowers each year, dying back over winter but regrows the following spring. Alpine: Small perennial plant Used in the fronts or borders, in rockeries, in walls, in paving and in containers. Biennials (two yearly) Sown outside in summer to produce stems and leaves in the first season, then flowering the following season (the 2nd year). Shrub: Usually low height with several woody stems at its base but lacks a single trunk (unlike a tree). Deciduous Sheds its leaves for winter. Evergreen Retains its leaves through winter. Climber Twines around an upright structure, such as a trellis etc or other woody stemmed plants.

Giving much thought to recent developments consideration is given which you feel is better late than never. Control and manipulation is recognised and is quickly stamped out. Lost keys found.
SCORPIO [October 23rd-Nov 22nd] Romance dominates the month when all seems lost. Making up time could well be worth the wait. Invitations and congratulations are around with news of a birth. Any concern over a long lost friend is soon squashed when hearing what they have to say. Changing forms of transport last minute may happen but all turns out well in the end.
VIRGO [August 24th-Sept23rd] Keeping your own council pays off when dealing with family or friends at a sensitive time. Not happy with one area of your life you try and sort matters out but with a view of change in the foreseeable future. With a new project in mind September brings positivity in more ways than one. Any money owing you, could well be received.
SAGITTARIUS [November 23rdDecember 22nd] Putting yourself first for a change allows you in a better frame of mind. Any guilt felt disappears when a loved one encourages you to take a well earned break. Meeting up with colleagues opens up new avenues of work in the near future. One project brings satisfaction when in doubt. Cutting ties likely with someone close but not for long.
CAPRICORN [December 23rdJanuary 20th] Any misunderstanding with family or friends is quickly dealt with. Younger members of the family show their creative side when least expected with future gains sooner rather than later in life. Running around for someone stops when you realise their capabilities with no repeat performance. Social gatherings bring exciting moments. AQUARIUS [January 21st-Feb 19th] A more confidant you is beginning to emerge. Tackling any obstacle head on brings one chapter to a close. Not only do you make more time for yourself but for others too. With some re-arranging and a positive outlook goals are achieved this month. Keeping a balance and control over matters of importance you are acknowledged. PISCES [February 20th-March 20th] Standing your ground and not budging one inch pays off when dealing with one particular person. Waiting for an outcome could well get the better of you. Mid month a much stronger and more confidant you emerges. Interested in taking up new hobbies of interest and keeping yourself in tip top condition has more than two thinking same.

Wollaton Road Allotments (Beeston) in association with the recently formed Beeston Community Growers are celebrating their Annual Allotment Open Day on Saturday 7th September.
Rehearsals are well underway for Bestwood MVC’s annual Gala Concert at the Albert Hall, Nottingham on Sunday 29 September 2013 at the new time of 3.00pm. The choir is joined on this occasion by the well known Thoresby Colliery Brass Band, based in the heart of Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire. The band is extremely proud of its local heritage and links with both the County and the local community. The Band formed in 1948, the result of a conversation held between two men, Mr Kitchener and his friend Mr Miller, on a bus between Mansfield and Edwinstowe, the idea being to form a brass band in the north Nottinghamshire village of Edwinstowe. As with Bestwood MVC, at one time as the name “Thoresby Colliery Band” suggests, many of the musicians were employed in the coal industry. The audience is promised a rich mixture of voice and brass instruments, with the grand finale being a combination of choir, band and audience! Proceeds from the Gala Concert will go towards Bestwood MVC’s funds to enable the choir to continue supporting local And national charities long into the future as it has in the past.

Singing is good for you! On Friday 13th of September a a charity evening will be held to help raise awareness and support to Cole, who suffers from tuberous sclerosis. This is a genetic condition that can lead to growths in all or various organs. Each month 10 babies are born with TSC so it's important that we help raise awareness, as catching this condition early is the key ! Cole is 2 years old and tuberous sclerosis has caused him to have severe epilepsy, visual problems balance problems and insomnia, to name a few but he is a little fighter and he doesn't let anything stop him and he will always manage a smile regardless of how poorly he feels. Such an inspiration!
The event will be held at the Beeston Royal British Legion, NG9 1EL on Friday 13th September, 7pm - 10 pm. There will be a range of luxury treatments including reflexology, manicures, facials, massage, card readings, candles and waxing. Also cakes, luxury raffle and a bar to name a few. “So if you want to come and support us and spoil yourself at the same time come along for a great evening...”

Magpie Drama Company are to perform a Regional Premier of Joe Penhall’s Dumb Show at the Duchess Theatre, Chatsworth Centre, West Gate, Long Eaton, Nottingham from Thursday 19th September to Saturday 21st September 2013. Magpie Drama’s aim is to bring fresh, compelling theatre of a national standard to local audiences. An ambitious challenge, but one relished by founders Rachel and Daniel Bates - two accomplished and imaginative members of the thriving Long Eaton drama scene. Their experience and passion for the arts has combined to create something bold and exciting. With no regular membership, each play brings together a hand-picked group of only the strongest in local talent, both on and off the stage. Their opening play: Dumb Show by Joe Penhall, is set in the present day and tells the story of Barry - TV’s “Mr Saturday Night.” He is approached by John and Jane, employees of a prestigious private bank, who flatter him shamelessly, ply him with champagne and offer him a lucrative fee to speak at a corporate hospitality event. Barry greedily takes the bait relishing the thought of outsmarting his agent on this deal. But all is not as it seems: John and Jane are in fact Greg and Liz, two undercover tabloid journalists, trying to get an exclusive expose on Barry’s hedonistic lifestyle.
breezemagazine 46
Will they get their scoop and the real dirt on Barry? Or is he smarter than he appears? Dumb Show is a smart, witty and thought provoking play, which takes you on a journey through the murky world of tabloid scandalmongering. Premiered in 2004, the themes are more relevant today than ever before. Writer Joe Penhall comments: “I think now the play is vindicated because we can see precisely how spiteful, sneaky, hypocritical, devious and dangerous tabloids can be.” Playing the role of Barry is Matt Fry, an accomplished actor who recently directed BMTG’s awarding winning “My Fair Lady.” Jane/Liz is played by Clare Toska, a talented performer and local artist/costumier, who dared to bare all in Riverside’s “Calender Girls”. Lastly, John/Greg is played by Daniel Bates, a prolific local actor who is also responsible for the original music in the play. Director Rachel Bates says “I am so pleased to be working with a very talented cast and professional crew, but the biggest achievement has been securing the regional premier of an excellent play. Plays of this calibre are rarely released to amateurs, so to have this as the opener to our season is just amazing.” If you have never ventured to the theatre before, you will be astounded at the quality on offer on-stage as well as the facilities, excellent seating and free parking in the surrounding car parks. Tickets for Dumb Show are priced £7 full and £5 concessions and are available via the website www.magpiedrama.com, from the theatres box office on Saturdays (10am-noon), or by calling 0115 9430119 or by emailing tickets@magpiedrama.com
