Join Pollyanna as she travels through the remotest areas of this enigmatic and fascinating country on her quest to paint the rarest wolf in the world. Date: 5th October 7.30pm Talk: The Red Wolves of Ethiopia Venue : The Dales United Reform Church, Parkdale Road, Bakersfield Nottingham NG3

breezemagazine 6

Internationally acclaimed Wildlife Artist Pollyanna Pickering is delighted to return to the church to present her brand new talk about her first expedition into Ethiopia. For many people Ethiopia may be most associated nowadays with the 1984 famine, but Pollyanna was drawn to the country by its unique wildlife. Abyssinian wolves are an elegant, long-legged species of wolf found only in a handful of scattered remote mountains in Ethiopia. At heights of almost 5,000m above sea level Pollyanna and Anna-Louise had to

contend with altitude sickness, thick cloud cover and freezing conditions as they drove in 4 wheel drives or trekked through the afro-alpine habitat. This illustrated talk is a humorous and gripping account of her quest to sketch one of the least known and rarest animals in the world. This event is a fund-raising evening for the church - all are welcome. Tickets £5.00 including refreshments. To book, or for further details Tel: 0115 9875605 or visit www.pollyannapickering.co.uk

Every year local people pull together to enjoy an evening of live music, dancing, auctions, food - all in support of a fantastic cause. Now in its fourth year you are invited to join in the fun in the 4th Annual Fancy Dress Fundraiser. Make sure you get your tickets for a great family night out! This October’s Fancy Dress Fundraiser has something extra special to celebrate. Well done and a massive thank you to all that have supported this event as the original aim to become a registered charity has been realised! Founder member Dawn Green was the original inspiration for this amazing evening of family and friends getting together to raise awareness of a very rare form of cancer. Dawn is a survivor of an extremely rare cancer called Pseudomyxoma Peritonei also known as ‘PMP’ for short. She was diagnosed with the disease in Jan 2008 and was initially told she had just three months to live. Now Dawn is going from strength to strength. If you speak to Dawn and ask where her inspiration and fight comes from she will tell you: “After losing Julie Stanton a good friend, I decided to set up a charity and website dedicated to helping others and creating a support network for those with the one in a million cancer that brought them together. Just a year on and the charity www.pseudomyxomasurvivor.co.uk is now registered with the uk charity commission no 1143642.” The work Dawn does through her website and facebook connections is extremely valuable for those who are unfortunate to have this terrible and rare disease. Countless people are able now to find out information that, previous to Dawns efforts, wasn’t easily available. Her efforts have now reached worldwide recognition! With network friends in America, Dawn offers advise and support via an online group and to show how far her efforts have reached she has recently been invited to be a guest speaker at a conference in Toronto held by the Canadian organisation for rare disorders, a prospect she is thrilled about. Dawn modestly explains “Other than having the privilege of opening this years cancer research Race For Life, I have never done anything like this, but I welcome the opportunity!” So, from bringing herself back from facing a nightmare none of us can even comprehend, Dawn has moved her life forward to help others, with recognition coming from larger organisations enlisting her help to raise awareness. This show’s how much Dawn’s hard work is paying off. To make sure Dawn and everyone else’s involved can continue to give this much needed support and awareness please join in and be apart of this fantastic evening. Held at The Beeston Community Centre, West End, Beeston NG9 1GL on Saturday October 29th from 7.30 onwards. All ages are welcome. Fancy dress is optional with the theme being Hollywood meets Halloween! Tickets are only £4 each and can be ordered from CVH Accounting on 0115 922 0815.

Leading local Psychotherapist, Martin Smith PhD has been in private practice for over ten years and specialises in helping people overcome issues around stress, anxiety and depression as well as a range of other issues that life brings us. Why bother, afraid to bother

If we were to consider phrases that could concisely sum up depression and anxiety they would be these; why bother and afraid to bother. This is not to deny the very real issue that these two conditions bring to those who suffer them; rather it is highlighting how debilitating these conditions can really be. When they take hold they can literally ruin lives. In a deep depressive state people just cannot do anything and simply question the value of trying. With anxiety it can be the fear of trying that brings more fear and feeds the anxiety. Difficult as it can be to understand how we can get to this position the more important thing is to consider how to get out such a position. Martin recognises the struggle many have to seek help, in fact too many people who suffer these conditions do not seek help or rely solely on medication. Martin states “It is the fact that people are struggling and often question the worth of treatment that makes it vital from the first session to get people moving in the right direction For those suffering from depression it is vital to allow them to begin to see a way forward; to develop an understanding that they can move their life on and regain purpose and direction. For those suffering from anxiety it is to give them a feeling of control, an ability to feel safe in themselves and ultimately in their day-to-day lives. Martin utilises a range of approaches to achieve results, emphasising the need to match the treatment plan to what works for the client rather than imposing something on a client that does not suit or fit their current needs. If you feel your life is blighted by these very crippling conditions give Martin a call to see how he can help. Martin has a well-established private practice in Long Eaton. If you are struggling with issues in your life Martin can help you to take back control. Call Martin on 07 973 410 010 or email itctherapy@aol.com to arrange an appointment, he is available for appointments at times to suit, especially weekends and evenings.

Comedy lovers and fans of Shakespeare will delight in Riverside Drama Company’s forthcoming production of The Pocket Dream, being performed in conjunction with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Riverside, under the directorship of Fleur Hebditch will be performing this anarchic and hilarious show, written by Sandy Toksvig and Elly Brewer, at the Duchess Theatre in Long Eaton’s Chatsworth Centre. Riverside are one of a limited number of companies nationwide to be successful in their application for backing from the RSC’s Open Stages project which aims to ‘embrace, develop and celebrate amateur theatre, re-forging the bond with the world of professional theatre while opening up access to Shakespeare for performers and audiences alike.’ That link-up has already seen Riverside members heading up to Manchester for workshops covering both onstage and backstage. The best productions regionally will get the chance to perform on one of the top local professional stages and the best of those could move on to perform in Stratford as part of the prestigious World Shakespeare Festival next summer. Pocket Dream, first performed just up the road at Nottingham Playhouse in 2002 before moving on to the West End, centres on a company about to perform A Midsummer Night’s Dream when members of the cast fall out with the management. Several walk out to get drunk at the Cricketers pub up the road and backstage and front of house members are called upon to take their places and cobble together a show with the inevitable hilarious consequences. Each ‘performer’ must play multiple roles with whatever costumes they can find, and off we go for two hours of confusion, bravado, romance and fun. Liz O’Hara, Donna Chinn, Martin Holtom, Dan Bates. Keith Salway and, making his Riverside debut, Gary Peake, tackle the array of characters in the show. Almost 300 amateur companies have signed up to produce RSC Open Stages productions across the UK from the Isle of Skye to the Isle of Wight. Some of these have been regularly producing Shakespeare since well before the establishment of the RSC and some are trying it for the first time. Productions are due to be performed everywhere from castles to village halls, from beaches to ballrooms, with many being performed in the hundreds of successful amateur run theatres around the country. Tickets for A Pocket Dream are priced £7 full and £5 concessions and are available via the group web site www.riversidedrama.com, from the Chatsworth Centre coffee mornings on Saturdays (10am-noon), from Down The Rabbit Hole toy shop at 44 Market Place, Long Eaton, or by calling 0115 9170327 or 0115 875050. The group rehearse every Thursday night at Bramcote Church of England Primary School (7.30pm) and new members are always made welcome. Riverside offer the chance for people of all ages, abilities and experience (or lack of) to try their hand at acting. But for those who have no wish to tread the boards, the group also offer a wealth of opportunities to become involved with all aspects of modern theatre from backstage to front of house. If you would like to become involved, simply turn up any Thursday at Bramcote Church of England Primary School or you can e-mail riverside.drama@ntlworld.com or telephone the above numbers. For more information on the group visit www.riversidedrama.com

Vets offer vaccine ‘Amnesty’ to help reduce fatal diseases in pets. Recent research showed that nearly two-thirds of all vet practices had seen at least one case of the killer dog disease Parvovirus in the preceding year and 40% had seen Leptospirosis. Keeping your dog’s vaccinations up to date is the only reliable way of preventing illness and death from these and other diseases. Similarly, Cat Flu and Feline Leukaemia Virus are still common causes of death but are preventable just by maintaining your cat’s vaccinations. To help you keep your pet protected, Churchcroft Vets are offering a course of vaccination at just the cost of a booster for pets whose vaccinations have lapsed. This means a full vaccine course for dogs is just £32.40 and for cats is only £42. A full health-check is carried out at the same time so you can discuss any other concerns you may have and get peace of mind that your pet is entirely healthy. Lead vet George says “There is nothing worse than finding a preventable but fatal disease in an otherwise healthy pet. It’s upsetting for us and often devastating for the owners. Vaccines are so safe and effective these days that no pets should have to suffer these awful illnesses”. You can check if your pet needs a booster or a full course of vaccines or book an appointment by calling Churchcroft Vets on 0115 922 4855.

Yes it is time to get out and about to discover where you can walk in Derbyshire. The annual Autumn Footprints Amber Valley & Erewash Walking Festival, set in the heart of picturesque Derbyshire, will embark on sixteen days of walks on Saturday 10th September to Sunday 25th September 2011. This Walking Festival offers a range of 32 guided free walks over 16 days. The Walking Festival has proved to be very popular with both inexperienced and experienced walkers. The walks, led by volunteers and staff from over twenty organisations, will take place in Amber Valley and Erewash. These two areas are well known for their natural beauty, superb scenery, industrial heritage and attractive towns and villages. Last year the festival had over 900 people attending during the 16 days, and this year, we hope it will be just as successful. The Walking Festival will begin on Saturday 10th September 2011 at 10.00am, with a launch event at Shipley Country Park Visitor Centre. This is followed by a short circular walk (3.5miles) at 10.30am in Shipley Country Park. One of the Walking Festival Co-ordinators Marion Farrell from Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire, said: “This Walking Festival is a fantastic way to see more of your local area. Each walk has two leaders – there is plenty of time to chat and admire the views. The idea behind the festival is not only to get local people to appreciate the countryside on their doorstep, but also to show visitors that you don’t have to go racing up to the Peak District to walk through beautiful countryside. Most of the walks are close to bus and train routes enabling everyone to get to the start point.” All the walks are free of charge, and will take place in areas of local heritage and natural history interest, taking walkers alongside rivers and canals as well as through towns and villages. The walks are of varying lengths and gradient, ranging in length from one mile to 8 miles, offering something for everyone no matter what their interests or abilities. They are all led by knowledgeable local people who are enthusiastic to show off their local patch.

Remember back in spring when you used quite a lot of your time and resources to make your garden the lovely place you want it to be? Well don’t let winter rob you of all your efforts - take some time now to prepare your garden for the inevitable seasons change. It will soon be time when we start seeing the trees vibrant green crown tumble once again, delivering an often equally vibrant display of rich yellows, oranges and russet browns. Nature’s cycles ensure that all that goodness used in the leaves of trees throughout the spring and summer will be reused as it falls to the ground and is effectively turned to compost. Next year’s growth will benefit from this steady accumulation. What then of our gardens at this time of year? Is your garden ready to take the eventual onslaught of winter? Alright, so it’s just the autumn, let’s not get ahead of ourselves too much you may think... but now is time to at least begin doing some of the work to help your ‘little bit of paradise’ get through anything but heavenly weather when it does come! • Clear out any debris Clearing plant debris along with any diseased leaves from your flower and vegetable patches is essential around now. Time to dig up those annuals (plants that last one season), putting them on the compost heap (a little like the leaves from the trees - so you are mimicking nature in a way).

Flowering perennials (plants that pop up each year, every year) from their roots - need to be be cut back. Get rid of yellowing or dead leaves & flowers before rot has a chance to develop. Remove any weeds hiding beneath plant foliage.

gardening

• Clean up your garden. We’ve had a wet summer and if combined with a warm September will means that plant mildew may will be a problem this autumn. Be scrupulous about tidying up. Good hygiene in the garden will be more important than usual this forthcoming autumn season because of the rather wet summer overall. Whilst things look lush and green at the moment, there could be problems storing up for the next six months and beyond if you fail to tackle things now. • Begin composting The one blessing of Winter for plants is that it gives cuttings and leaves a chance to break down, releasing nutrients when it turns to compost. This will be your friend (and it’s free!) when boosting the garden in the new year. It’s also timely to turn your compost heap with a fork. This will help it heat up nicely as it oxygenates it, and then it will gently rot over winter. • Plant for the seasons to come It’s a perfect time of year to plant your spring bulbs, such as tulips, daffodils and new perennials. The soil will still be quite warm but moisture levels are increasing. This gives time for plants to get established before the onset of real cold starts to bite. Plant or move shrubs and trees to give them enough time to anchor down before the next growing season. Look back on what was or wasn’t successful in this past year's planting scheme so you can change your planting next year.

• Protect those Palms If you have been pot growing a Canary Palm this summer it will ideally need taking indoors - a conservatory is best. At the very least cover it up with fleece before the nights get below about six degrees centigrade. Hardier versions such as Trachycarpus fortunei (Chinese palm) still require some insulation for the coldest months of the year so why not cover up in the next few weeks and avoid losing what is quite an expensive plant to replace? • The lawn, don’t forget the lawn! It’s easy to just sit back and think “at least I don’t have to mow it for the next four months” but lawns need care and attention to keep the grass roots healthy for next year’s fun & barbecues! Mow less frequently and raise the height of the grass cutter because the growth rate of grass slows down about now. Rake out dead grass and moss that has built up over the summer with a scarifier. Use a high-potassium autumn lawn feed, which is designed to release the correct balance of nutrients throughout the winter. continued......

spare space to do this, cover it with a tough waterproof sheet securely fixed and taking care to allow a good circulation of air to keep the damp away from direct contact. Treat wooden items like benches or pergolas, with a chemical preservative - and some of them these days are superb as well as low odour.

• Put the furniture away If you will not be using your garden furniture, have it stored away in the shed or garage to protect it from the worst weather, keeping it dry. If don’t have the

• Don’t forget our garden friends They were there for you all summer (did you take up on our tips last month on encouraging wildlife into your garden?) Give birds a friendly welcome in the garden by putting out extra food. The feeder should be placed near a tall shrub, mature tree or fence providing protection from potential predators. Berry-bearing plants are an extra source of food for birds and other wildlife - so consider planting some for a natural yearly source of nourishment for them. Rowan, Firethorn and holly plants can all be recommended.

gardening • Check on the conservatory Whilst you will want to reduce ventilation once the cooler, windy autumn weather sets in, it is important to ventilate conservatories during the waning warmer days to prevent runaway temperatures. Shading paint or blinds can both help to keep things cool. Keep an eye on the light levels as they fall though, gradually reducing the shading and watering of houseplants to keep them going through the darker months. • Cover the pond Get your pond covered up with a net to stop falling leaves - these will pollute the water, and do make sure you clean it regularly or the net can start to sink into the pond, defeating the object! If you have fish make sure they can continue to breathe by preventing the water from freezing. Ideally the pond should be at least eight feet deep if you keep fish as they live in the deepest levels during the winter months. So don’t give up on your garden come the cooler weather - keep things going and show you care!

A typical eight panel installation can make you £19,000 profit over twenty five years and generates £900 per year yet can only costs approximately £8,000 to install. These can give a much better return on your investment than a typical bank savings account! After years of talking about climate change, feed in tariffs are fast becoming the accepted norm when upgrading your energy use. Solar PV or ‘Photo Voltaic’ panels are like little electricity generators on your roof, they capture the sun light and turn it in to electricity which you can use or sell back to the electricity company. Feed in tariffs are payments of 43.3p/KWh (index linked) or unit of electricity generated on your roof. You are then free to use it cutting your electricity bill or sell it back to the electricity company, so you are getting paid twice. This sounds too good to be true but the government have introduced these measures in order to attract large numbers of people across the country to install their own generators (solar pv) and help them meet their climate change targets. These payments are government guaranteed for the next twenty five years. Contact Reset Renewables for more information on 0115 837 8322 or 07989 428732

DON’T SHIVER THIS WINTER, PUT A BLANKET ON YOUR HOUSE With the soaring cost of energy sapping more and more of our available resources it makes sense to invest in measures to help conserve heat and reduce the cost of staying warm. And now under a new Government initiative requiring the major energy suppliers to reduce levels of domestic CO2 emissions, the cost to the householder, has just fallen through the floor. It could even be free. One of the most important measures we can take is to properly insulate the loft space since, according to estimates a whopping 25% of the heat generated in a house is lost straight through the roof when adequate insulation is not fitted. Fortunately help is at hand for all households. Nottingham based Framework UK in association with GSI Carbon Solutions is helping to deliver the latest government initiative to help reduce carbon emissions. By supplying and fitting loft insulation and arranging Cavity Wall Insulation to meet the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT), Frameworks UK can access funding which is available for many households to benefit from completely free supply and installation. Many others are eligible for huge discounts on materials (cheaper than DIY) and free installation. If you currently have no loft insulation and you install the recommended 250mm depth you could save around £150 - £225 a year on your heating bills. By properly insulating homes, people can save money on fuel bills, protect the warmth of their home and cut carbon emissions. Add cavity wall insulation as well and potential savings could be almost three times that amount. Don’t miss out on this remarkable opportunity for free insulation, contact David at Framework and arrange to get your share now. Tel: 07801814209

Member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (MNCH) Telephone: 07845 405835 LIBRA Your capabilities exceed when in a hurry to complete one task. Pleased with something on going around the home you accept a helping hand. A strong possibility of changing course regarding your working life may arrive. You stand back when words are spoken which hurt. Mentally preparing for the future long term pays off.

CAPRICORN Any overtiredness moves away during the first week. Trying to get into a routine proves difficult when there is so much interference away from home. Pleased with one outcome you challenge some one giving them food for thought. Ready for a break plans are made to do just that. Younger members of the family help out when needed.

SCORPIO With so much going off around you life becomes quite challenging one way or another. Getting to grips with some news is easy as you expected the results you receive. Keeping your cards close to your chest you give away nothing allowing others find their own way. Social events prove exciting when confronted with options.

AQUARIUS Busy as ever you plan the month carefully so that you have some time alone. Making new friends may not be as easy as you thought but is worthwhile. Confident and self-assured you prove yourself when one person has their doubts. Planning ahead at a time of celebrations brings family and friends you haven’t seen lately together.

SAGITTARIUS Trying to sort others lives out instead of yours delays a positive outcome you were looking forward to. Response is slow when standing back waiting for a reaction. Happy to accept offers socially you embark on what becomes a fulfilling event. End of month has its rewards when you make a choice out of options and go with it.

PISCES In a rut or just feeling down in the dumps you manage to stick to routine getting yourself back to being the real you within days. Sea or sun or both play a major roll in your sign. For many you are ready to gain from both. Speaking your mind is difficult when there is so much to be said. Unpredictable pays off when taken for granted.

GREENING BEESTON – HELP THE ENVIRONMENT AND SAVE MONEY Public Meeting on Tuesday 27th September at 7.30, Beeston Baptist Church, Dovecote Lane, NG9 1HR A group of local people need your help in this simple, yet successful, campaign in Beeston. If you are concerned about environmental issues or want to learn some simple steps to save money and reduce our impact, please go along and find out more. All are welcome. Refreshments will be available. The group is planning to launch the Greening Beeston Campaign in early 2012 with a public event, and then they will be distributing cards to households in Beeston. The cards will have a list of simple energy-saving actions, such as turning off lights in a room when not needed. When five of the actions have been undertaken, the ‘leaf’ on the other side of the card can be displayed in a front window, so that a count can be made of how many are taking part. The group warmly appreciates any help with any of these activities. For further information: greeninginbeeston.weebly.com or phone Janet Poliakoff on 0115 925 6368. Advice on incorporating your business to trade as a Limited Company by Bramcote Accountancy Services. “In the past when a sole trader or partnership business was considering incorporating their business to trade as a limited company we would compare tax rates to find the ‘break even’ point for incorporation. In the past this ‘break even’ point meant that it was only beneficial to incorporate your business if the annual profit exceeded £50,000. However in recent budgets corporation tax rates have been lowered and are now significantly lower than income tax rates, meaning that all businesses need to consider incorporation whatever the profit. Apart from saving money are there any other benefits to incorporation and practical issues that a business needs to consider? Benefits • Reduction in tax bill • Limited liability - should a company fail the liability of the share holder is limited to the amount unpaid on the shares (if any). • Different share classes to take advantage of the different personal tax circumstances of individual shareholders. • IHT Planning - a company enables greater flexibility. • It may prove easier to sell shares rather than the business and assets. • A director can borrow from the company with no need to pay high credit card or loan interest. • Tax free employee benefits and incentives can be provided with the company obtaining tax relief thereon. • Where the business premises is held outside of the company the director can extract funds from the company in the form of rent with no PAYE or National Insurance issues. • Overlap relief may be available on cessation of self-employed trade. • Potential transfer of trading loss - relieved against salary then against dividends. Practical issues • Stationery and websites must by law display certain company details. • New bank accounts, VAT and PAYE registrations will need to be set up. • Be careful to choose the best date for cessation of self-employment - choosing the wrong date may increase tax liability for the final year. • Some companies in regulated industries may be required to apply for new licences as the status of the business has changed. • Consider whether it would be more beneficial for cars to be held in the director’s personal name outside of the company. • Caution is needed where there is the possibility of the shares being transferred or disposed of within two years of incorporation. • The business may have built up goodwill which will need to be transferred to the new company, it is important that this is valued correctly. If you are interested in incorporating your business our website www.bramcoteaccountancy.co.uk has an incorporation calculator within the Tax Zone section where you can see how much tax you could potentially save by incorporating. You can also sign up for our newsletters which will include lots of helpful advice on issues such as this. Lynsey Lawrence Chartered Tax Adviser
