The Beeston Methodist Carol Choir will be singing again this year, raising money for a local charity called the Beeston Benevolent Society which helps the local “poor and needy”. The Choir was formed during the 1870s by Beeston Methodists, then worshipping in premises on Chapel Street, and in the early days up to 1914, singing took place outside the homes of the chapel’s own members. Singing would start on Christmas Eve and lasted throughout Christmas night until breakfast. The Choir still goes out singing every year on Christmas Eve, but since the late 1950s it has also been necessary to sing on one or two other evenings before Christmas in order to cover such a large area. This year you can listen out for the choir on:

There has been a lot of interest shown since Fred Hallam Ltd opened their new store on the corner of Beeston High Road and Derby Street. Aimed mainly at offering indoor plants, fresh flowers, and an excellent value garden centre - fully stocked with everything you would imagine to be on offer - it also mirrors their main shop, in offering excellent quality fruit and vegetables at an unbeatable price...

At this time of year the gardening aspect is limited - a good thing for Fred Hallam Ltd as they need the space for their hundreds of fantastic christmas trees! Sourced as usual, directly from Scotland, this year they have at least five varieties to choose from, and the choice on offer is bigger than ever. Parking in the Derby Street car park makes collection a doddle (they will happily carry it to your car) and local delivery is always available. At the main shop on Beeston High Road they are enjoying another hectic run up to Christmas - stocking up on those festive essentials like dates and nuts as well as offering a whole host of seasonal produce, fresh from the frosty fields of England. The new look fish department continues to please with its large selection of fresh fish on the new ice-bed counter and large self service chiller filled with items pre-packed on the day by their expert fishmongers (they start at 6am, did you know!) With everything you need from olives to home-made patĂŠ and Colwick cheese to caviar, their delicatessen has everything you need to make your Christmas feast complete. Merry Fishmas! But they forget to invite the Fairy Black who doesn't take kindly to this and she casts a wicked spell over Princess Aurora. Under the protection of Fairy Lilac the Princess grows up to her 18th birthday but the spell comes true and she pricks her finger on a spindle, falling to sleep for 100 years, only to be woken by true loves kiss. Follow the adventures of the Princess, Nanny Nettie Nettle, Chester the Jester. The cast and crew of Sleeping Beauty are bursting with energy and excitement as we rehearse and prepare for this year’s pantomime offering which will be performed at the Nottingham Arts Theatre between the 7th and 22nd December. The show is full of upbeat songs chosen by musical director, Ray McLeod, and writer and director, Amanda Hall who is back with the theatre directing the second pantomime following the award winning success of Puss In Boots last year. She says “the pressure is on to build on last year’s success but the cast are so enthusiastic and talented that I’m confident everyone will enjoy it, both on stage and in the audience”. The Dame this year is played by Gavin Alston who has thirty years of pantomime experience and still enjoys the role as much now as when he first started. He is new to The People’s Theatre Company, but the cast have been very welcoming and are excited to work with him. Gavin said” that pantomime appeals to everyone, on all levels and that we all need a bit of fantasy and fun in our lives. Who isn’t interested in Glitz, glamour, sparkle and a happy ending!” Over thirty children are performing in this year’s pantomime, ranging from 6 years old up to 17 years old and coming from all over

write to santa

There’s still time for people in Nottinghamshire to make Christmas extra special this year by ordering a personalised Letter from Santa for a child, and at the same time raise vital funds for the NSPCC.

For a suggested donation of £5 to the charity, a child will receive a fun, colourful and personalised Letter from Santa, arriving via ‘Rudolph Mail’. The Letters feature a festive story tailored to their age and you can choose from seven different beautifully illustrated styles. Santa can even write a special poem to celebrate baby’s first Christmas – a keepsake to treasure for years to come. Each letter includes the child’s name, age, gender, best friend or family member’s name, favourite activity and achievements, as well as a special ‘PS’ option when you request your letter online. You can also choose whether the letter is signed by ‘Santa’ or ‘Father Christmas’. Last year, 21,158 children in the East Midlands received a Letter from Santa. Sharon King, NSPCC community fundraising manager for Nottinghamshire, said: “Christmas is such a special time of year for children and what could make it more special than a letter from Santa himself. By requesting a Letter from Santa, not only will you make Christmas even more magical for a child but you’re helping the NSPCC to be there for vulnerable children, right here in Nottinghamshire and across the UK.” Every £5 raised by Letter from Santa will help ChildLine be there for a child in danger or distress, either online or over the phone. Every £12 raised could help us talk to one primary school child about abuse and give them the confidence to talk to a trusted adult. And every £50 could help an NSPCC practitioner deliver two hours telephone support to anyone with concerns about a child. The reindeer mailroom is open until midnight on 17 December 2013 and all those who request a Letter from Santa will be entered into a draw to win a once-in-alifetime trip to Lapland for a family of four. Order your Letter from Santa online at www.nspcc.org.uk/santa or by calling 0845 839 9304.

2. Heat 20ml of vegetable oil in a frying pan. Add in the finely chopped onion and fry gently until soft and translucent. 3. Add in the sausage meat and cook, stirring occasionally until the sausage meat is well done. 4. Stir in the chestnut puree and if necessary, a little of the stock. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper and continue cooking for a few minutes. Set aside. 5. Meanwhile, roast the bones in a roasting tray until brown.

8. Mix in a little stock and cook briskly till the tomato puree has browned. 9. Add the remaining stock, bay leaf and thyme and season with salt and freshly ground pepper.

14. Layer the sage leaves on top of the pork, then wrap the pork in the Parma ham and tie with string. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper.

10. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for forty minutes, skimming frequently.

15. Heat the remaining oil in a roasting tray until hot.

11. Pass through a fine sieve, return to a clean pan and cook briskly until reduced by half. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground pepper.

6. Add in the chopped vegetables and the garlic and roast until lightly browned. Mix in the tomato puree and the white wine.

12. Make an incision lengthways down the middle of the pork fillet, open it up and lay between two layers of cling film. Using a chef’s mallet beat the pork until flattened.

7. On the hob, bring the white wine mixture to the boil and cook briskly until reduced and caramelised.

13. Spread the chestnut stuffing evenly over the pork fillet, then fold the fillet over the filling.

16. Add the pork and the vegetables for roasting to the roasting tray. 17. Roast for twenty five minutes, turning the pork and vegetables three to four times during that time. Once roasted, remove the pork from the oven and rest for ten minutes, keeping the vegetables warm. 18. Remove the string from the pork and slice it into 1cm thick slices. Serve with the roasted vegetables and the gravy.

oh yes he is... WIN A 30 year reign for the Dame - meet Kenneth Alan Taylor as he prepares for his last ever pantomime Dame performances! Breeze has teamed up with Nottingham Playhouse to giveaway a family ticket for the evening of Thursday 9th Jan. Kenneth Alan Taylor is back one last time. Oh yes he is! See him star as Dame Daisy in the same pantomime with which he began 30 years ago, Jack & the Beanstalk. With over half-a century of pantomime at Oldham Coliseum and Nottingham Playhouse ‘behind him’, Kenneth has firmly earned his place in the pantomime history books. For the last three decades Kenneth Alan Taylor has been an instrumental part of Nottingham’s cultural heritage. He was Artistic Director of Nottingham Playhouse for seven years and the person responsible for bringing pantomime to the Playhouse.

His annual show has become one of the region’s most beloved winter events, having drawn three generations to witness the magic of pantomime. Kenneth has been writing pantomimes since 1962 and over this time has perfected the pantomime triple whammy of writing, directing and performing. His work has inspired audiences and pantomime performers alike, and he is seen as one of the most influential pantomime practitioners working in the UK today. Kenneth said: “Thirty years ago I could never have imagined that I would still be presenting and appearing in panto at the Playhouse three decades on. I know I have said it a few times before, but this is definitely my last appearance as Dame. I feel so fortunate to have been doing something I absolutely love for thirty years, and for that I must thank the Nottingham audiences who have given me such support and pleasure over all these years. As always I cannot wait to be up on the Playhouse stage doing the thing I love best.....pantomime.”

Simon Sladen, Pantomime Editor from the British Theatre Guide said: “In Nottingham Playhouse’s 50th anniversary, what better way to round off the year than to see one of the UK’s leading pantomime practitioners Kenneth Alan Taylor - give his final Dame in Jack and the Beanstalk, the very same title he launched pantomime at the venue 30 years ago.” Although tradition family-values and exquisite and unique costumes and sets lie at the very heart of a Playhouse pantomime, Kenneth Alan Taylor isn’t afraid to play with the genre and embraces the possibilities of pantomime by utilising a variety of conventions. This has led to ‘Dick Whittingtons’ and ‘Aladdins’ with more than one Dame, and productions embracing both male and female Principal Boys. Jack and The Beanstalk will feature a cornucopia of cattlestrophic costumes, melodious moo-sic, madness and glitter aplenty in this magical winter treat for all the family. Jack may well have his head in the clouds, but he could do with a bit more fee-fifofun in his life. But when he udderly foolishly sells Buttercup the family cow for a handful of boring beans, oh yes he is in trouble! But he’s about to climb new heights in this giant of a magical adventure! Joining Kenneth will be Playhouse panto favourites, John Elkington, Rebecca Little and Daniel Hoffmann- Gill. seasonal tricks...

It’s easy to pull together last-minute decorations and be eco-friendly at the same time. Creative use of candlelight throughout the home can create a cosy, magical ambience while saving precious energy.

• Use fresh fruit for decorations. Vases filled with vibrant citrus fruits such as lemons, clementines and mandarins will create a stunning centrepiece for the dining table. • Decorate gifts with natural materials or wrap empty boxes and use them as decorations. Wrap each present/box with brown paper and finish by tying with raffia and a few carefully place cinnamon sticks. Add a luggage label for a name tag. • Group scented candles together in a fireplace or on a silver tray for a focal point that will give warming, winter scents. (Never leave lit candles unattended or near animals and children). DECORATING TIPS Making a centrepiece for a dining table or coffee table is easy, and children can enjoy helping. • Take some petit fours cases - tiny cupcake papers in gold if possible - and half fill with Plasticine. Cover the Plasticine with red winter berries and stick a long thin taper/candle in each. Arrange on a plate covered with a gold doily.

breezemagazine 24

• Fruit candles: Make a hole in some apples, pears and oranges with a corer, spray them with gold paint and allow to dry. Add a few gold-sprayed grapes. Insert a gold candle into each and arrange on ivy leaves on a heatproof plate. (You MUST blow out before the reaches the fruit). • Pretty place cards: Spray some pasta bows with gold paint and attach one to each piece of folded white card. Write the name neatly under the bow. Or write each name with a gold pen on an ivy leaf, and wind a few ivy leaves round each napkin to match. • Cheat if you don’t have a large tablecloth and use a large sheet that reaches almost to the ground (put a blanket underneath first to give a sumptuous padded feel). This will mean you won’t need mats. Add a tablecloth on top, and loop it up at intervals into swags pinning or tacking each one in place. Add a bunch of ivy leaves or red bows at each apex. • Buy cheap crackers and decorate them yourself to make them look special; you can even gently open them at one end and pop little extra presents in. Then add glittery bows, pieces of gathered net, sequins, holly leaves etc.

breeze book signing On Saturday 7th December, between 2pm and 4pm, Jonathan Emmett will be signing copies of his picture books at the Oxfam Books and Music shop on Beeston High Road.... Children’s picture book author, Jonathan Emmett was born in Leicestershire in 1965, the son of a factory fitter and a primary school teacher. He loved books from an early age and some of his earliest memories are of visiting the local library where he grew up. The picture books that he borrowed then, including Where the Wild Things Are and The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss had a great influence on the picture books that he now writes. But like many children of his generation, the author who made the biggest impression on his early childhood was Roald Dahl. It wasn't until Jonathan was about fourteen years old that it occurred to him that he might write for a living. He tried to make the covers of his school rough books look like real book covers, each with its own reviews and biographical details on the inside covers and publisher's blurb on the back. Of course, there was nothing inside the books – except the rough notes that he had taken during lessons! It was while Jonathan was at college, studying architecture, that he first started developing his own illustrated texts, illustrating poems and lyrics that he’d written. Pleased with the results, he found himself spending more and more time on writing and illustration. Although he qualified as an architect, he found the job unsatisfying and began pursuing a career in children's books in his spare time, eventually going full-time in 1995, a few months before his thirtieth birthday.

breezemagazine 26

As well as writing picture books such as Bringing Down the Moon, Someone Bigger, Pigs Might Fly and Ruby Flew Too, he also writes and paper-engineers pop-up books. Jonathan’s books have won several awards including the Red House Children’s Book Award for Pigs Might Fly and the Sheffield Children's Book Award for The Pig's Knickers. Jonathan now lives in Beeston with his wife, Rachel, and his two children, Max and Laura. On Saturday 7th December, between 2pm and 4pm, Jonathan will be signing copies of his picture books at the Oxfam Books and Music shop on Beeston High Road. A wide selection of his books will be available for purchase, with all of the proceeds going towards the Oxfam Philippines Typhoon Appeal. Any of these books can be signed by the author and would make fantastic presents for the small (and not so small) person in your life.

At this time when we are rushing around buying presents and stocking up the pantry. Why not spare a thought and support your local ‘Foodbank’... Hope Nottingham was set up initially as HopeNG9 to provide a platform where churches could work, together with other community leaders, to enable lasting transformation for communities and individuals in the area. Support and partnerships have grown all around Nottingham which resulted in Hope Nottingham being established as a registered charity 2010. By mobilising sustainable projects that make a real difference Hope Nottingham enables lasting transformation for communities and individuals all around the area. In 2009 Hope started working with Beeston Parish Church who were providing a soup kitchen. This was later transferred to Hope House in Boundary Road in Beeston after the URC offered use of the premises and Became “Hope Cafe” In 2011 Hope Nottingham opened its first Trussell Trust Foodbank as part of Hope Cafe. This work with the Café and Foodbank have grown to now offer GP, Mental Health Support, Furniture recycling, clothing, employment training and through DHL, legal advice on tenancy issues; but above all it offers a secure, welcoming place where people can come for support and to share with others. In addition, the centre provides a Family Drop in Centre for young children and their parents/carers and a ROC Café Youth Club for young people plus much more. “Since opening the first Foodbank in 2010 we have seen a further 9 Foodbank outlets opened in and around Nottingham with possibly 2 or 3 more to open over the next few months. Each of the foodbanks is now being developed as one stop community support cafés along similar lines to Hope Cafe in Beeston. Since opening the foodbank, Hope Nottingham has provided 3 day food parcels to nearly 5000 people in Nottingham as well as enabling several homeless people to get housed and long term unemployed people get back into work.” To continue the work of Hope Nottingham they do need ongoing support with Volunteers, Food Donations and Money. The team at Churchcroft Vets are holding a fun, animal based quiz with a few animal health questions to see who is the cleverest of clever clogs. In addition, homemade Mince Pies and Mulled wine will be served to everyone-whether joining the quiz or not. All funds raised will be used for caring for injured or stray pets. The timing may be particularly appropriate since there is always a rise in these cases just after Christmas as puppies and kittens given as inappropriate gifts are abandoned. All the staff will be providing homemade mince pies so you can judge their in-house bake off at the same time. Head Vet George is defending champion after his (Nigella Lawson recipe) winning pies last year. Mulled Wine, Mince Pies and a Pet Quiz with prizes, all to raise money for a good cause - what could be better? Head down to Churchcroft Vets after work (7.30pm-8.30pm) on Thursday Dec 19th and join the fun. This month we look at how to use nature’s beauty to create your own Christmas decorations...

Christmas is looming and so we look at ways in which we can fully enjoy the garden and all it has to offer to help us decorate the inside of our homes. The perfect materials for adding natural beauty to any festive scenes include berried ivy, holly as well other not so obvious choices such as crab apples, hazel, dogwood, silver birch stems, along with a variety of seedheads and pine cones. Artifical Christmas paper trees which come pre-lit are the in thing this year, but it is possible to create a similar pretty adornment at a fraction of the cost. Just get half a dozen thick stems of perhaps birch or willow for your uprights, and fasten together with some florist's wire. Then add festive ribbon or other decorations to this. Wind a set of Christmas lights around the branches (use a larger set than you think as lights soon look weedy if not sufficient in number). This gives any corner a focal point and takes up less room than a regular tree in a smaller space. Don’t add water to the pot if you are using lights as this could be hazardous. You can use the clippings from your Christmas tree to make the base of a delightful wreath, using a wire stand upright, to take the card holders that florists use. frame (like the one illustrated) wrapped in moss as The same natural materials can then be added to your your base. breeze appeal People living in the East Midlands are the joint-third most likely in England to adopt. Could you be one of the ones that make a difference?... With local women aged 41-50 likely to come forward, according to research* carried out on behalf of the Department for Education and published today by First4Adoption – the national adoption information service for England. Now, First4Adoption is urging more local people to consider offering a loving home to one of the 4,600 children in England currently waiting to be adopted. According to the research, published today to mark the start of National Adoption Week, of the 1 in 7 people in England who say they are ‘certain’ or ‘very likely’ to adopt a child, the joint-third largest group (4% or 116,600 local people) live in the East Midlands, along with the North East (4% of the total or 66,100 people). People from the East Midlands are also the seventh most likely to contact First4Adoption for more information about adopting - 6% of calls to the First4Adoption telephone information line have been from people living in the East Midlands**. Those living in the East Midlands are very likely to use First4Adoption’s online information service, with many also following First4Adoption’s social media output. “There are lots of girls and boys out there who desperately need the love and stability that a permanent family can bring,” said Gemma Gordon-Johnson, Head of Service at First4Adoption. “We urgently need more adopters to come forward, so this National Adoption Week I appeal to anyone in the East Midlands who would like to find out more about adopting a child to get in touch with our friendly advisors on 0300 222 0022.” Women living in the East Midlands were more than three times more likely to contact First4Adoption than men. Although nearly two-third (65%) of these local women who contacted First4Adoption were married or in a civil partnership, around one in seven of them were single (13%) and over a third (35%) were aged 41-50 years old. “It’s really encouraging that so many local people aged over 40 and those who are single are interested in adopting because it shows that we are finally beginning to bust some of the myths around who can adopt. You can adopt if you are aged over 40, single, unmarried, lesbian or gay, or if you already have children,” commented Gemma Gordon-Johnson. Adoptive mum Ali, who adopted a two-year old girl with her partner Lauren, said: “Being able to give a loving home to someone who wouldn’t have one otherwise is a fantastic thing, but we did this for ourselves, so that we could have a wonderful family.” First4Adoption has also launched a handy guide to adopting ‘Exploring Adoption: Step By Step’ to mark National Adoption Week, which can be downloaded from its website www.first4adoption.org.uk/the-adoption-process/explorationfinding-out-about-the-road-ahead/ You can also find out about information evenings being held by adoption agencies in your local area at www.first4adoption.org.uk/find-an-agency. The government is currently introducing wide-ranging reforms of the adoption system to make it faster and easier to adopt. Under the new two-stage adopter assessment process, prospective adopters should know if they have been approved to adopt within six months. The government also recently announced the creation of £19.3 million Adoption Support Fund providing post-adoption support for adoptive families. Rotary fundraising brings hope to the Philippines Aid created and supported by Rotarians, is starting to reach the Philippines which was devastated on November 8 by Typhoon Haiyan. The Rotary Club of Wollaton Park has so far raised £1340.00 mainly from a street collection at Bramcote shops, which will be allocated to the worst affected areas providing water, tents, clothing, blankets and cooking utensils to the victims. Each box costs just under £590 and contains survival equipment to help communities get though the coming months. The Rotary Club of Wollaton Park is also funding another 2 ‘Aquafilter Community’ Items which provide 500,000 litres of water, each to be sent to the Philippines. The President of the Rotary Club of Wollaton Park Lynn Martin said: “The boxes will be used to provide long term and sustainable support for survivors of the typhoon. To keep this relief effort going, Rotary members are mobilising to raise funds, make donations and help in any way that they can. Funds donated by members of the public will support the relief effort and enable victims to reclaim their lives.” It is too early to tell how long it will take the region to recover from the aftermath of this devastating typhoon. Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI) has set up a disaster fund which will be used by Rotarians, working together with Rotary clubs in the Philippines, to help rebuild schools, hospitals, roads and other essential parts of the country’s infrastructure in the long term. The success of these projects relies solely on the fundraising efforts of Rotary clubs and the generosity of the public. As the boxes are sent out, more are being packed, creating a need for new boxes and further funding. To donate please contact your local Rotary club or send a cheque to: RIBI Donations Trust, c/o Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, Kinwarton Road, Alcester, B49 6PB. Please make your cheque payable to RIBI Donations Trust and mark your envelope ‘Philippines Appeal.’ Anyone interested in finding out more about Rotary clubs in the local area, should contact John Clifford of the Wollaton Park Rotary Club john.t.clifford@ntlworld.com. Rotary is for communities Many members say they join Rotary because it gives them a chance to give something back to their community. In local communities alone, each club raises tens of thousands of pounds for community projects and local charities, often more. Members also volunteer their time supervising and organising community events, running projects to promote the achievements of young people, coordinating educational programmes and supporting local businesses.
