The 17th Nottingham Boys Brigade and 30th Nottingham Girls Brigade are proud to announce this years annual pantomime of Cinderella.
oh yes it is! “This is our 68th in total; 10 of which have been performed at The Pearson Centre for Young People following a previous 58 at Beeston Lads Club.....where have all those years gone! This year sees several of our young people in major principle roles, including sisters Kayleigh and Shannon who star as Principal boy and girl consecutively. We are also fortunate enough to have Pat Eyre Dance School take part again this year and their talent and enthusiasm adds a further dimension to our ever successful production. All the cast; both old and new to pantomime are extremely eager and are looking forward to the performances at the end of January. Once again we are indebted to the team of volunteers both backstage and front of house who enable us to put on the pantomime and of course you the public”. A SPELL-BINDING CAST LEAD THIS YEAR’S THEATRE ROYAL PANTOMIME,
beauty and the beast The Theatre Royal Nottingham’s sensational family pantomime, Beauty and the Beast, will star Sherrie Hewson, Ben Richards, Ben Nickless, and Andrew Ryan, in an all-new spectacular production opening on Saturday 9 December. Much-loved actress, TV star, ex-Loose Women presenter, and Nottingham native, Sherrie Hewson will lead the cast of this year’s spectacular panto Beauty and the Beast as Mrs Potty. Her roles in Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Crossroads, and the legendary Carry On films have all led to Sherrie becoming one of Britain’s best-loved and most popular faces on television. Sherrie currently stars in the hit TV series Benidorm as Joyce Temple-Savage, the manager of the Solana Resort. She has been filming the tenth series since March and it is set to air in early 2018. Alongside Sherrie, television and stage star Ben Richards will play The Beast. After rising to fame on the ITV drama Footballers’ Wives, Ben went on to secure high-profile television roles in Holby City, The Bill, Doctors, and Hollyoaks. No stranger to the stage, Ben has appeared in theatres across the UK and the West End with leading roles in Grease, Saturday Night Fever, The Full Monty, 9 to 5, Rock of Ages, and The Bodyguard opposite Beverley Knight at the Dominion Theatre, London, which broke Box Office attendance records. Zany impressionist and comedy actor Ben Nickless will make a welcome return to the Theatre Royal Nottingham pantomime this Christmas. This will be Ben’s fourth Theatre Royal Nottingham pantomime, having previously appeared alongside David Hasselhoff in Peter Pan (2013), Lesley Joseph in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (2014), and Christopher Biggins and Simon Webbe in Aladdin (2015). Completing the line-up this year is pantomime dame extraordinaire, Andrew Ryan. This year marks Andrew’s fourth appearance at the Theatre Royal Nottingham having previously appeared in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 2014, Aladdin with Stephen Mulhern in 2010, and Jack and the Beanstalk with Nigel Havers in 2009. Dreaming of a happier life, the beautiful Belle finds herself transported to a cursed castle. Held captive by a hideous beast, the castle is full of magical characters placed under a spell by an evil enchantress. Can Belle see beyond the monster and fall in love with her captor before the last petal falls from the enchanted rose, or will the Beast’s selfishness cost him the world he once knew and the hand of the girl who has melted his heart? In a production packed full of sensational special effects, beautiful costumes, music, comedy, dancing, and audience participation; Nottingham’s audiences should book their tickets now for this year’s spell-binding pantomime. Theatre Royal Nottingham, Saturday 9 December 2017 – Sunday 14 January 2018 Tickets: £18 - £35.50 plus discounts for Members, Under 16s, Families and Go Card holders

a warm and welcoming environment within the traditionally furnished surroundings. Emphasis is placed on personal service, correctly fitted frames and accurately dispensed ophthalmic lenses by exceptional manufacturers such as Carl Zeiss, Nikon, Seiko, Rodenstock, Essilor, Hoya and many other superior independent lens suppliers. The team are genuinely passionate about providing the best possible product for the needs of the client. The largest range of quality niche eyewear such as Etnia Barcelona, Face a Face, ProDesign, Salt and Silhouette and designer frames such as Polo Ralph Lauren and sunglasses such as Ray-Ban, Oakley and Maui Jim are stocked. In a market dominated by larger optical groups here is a practice dedicated to providing patients with a reassuring, Dr Janjua individual and professional service. Indeed, Dr. Janjua advocates the following guidance: “The prescribing and dispensing of spectacles are very closely linked and it would be in your best interests to have your spectacles dispensed where you had your eyes examined. It is more difficult to resolve problems you may have with your spectacles when prescribing and supply are separated.”
The College of Optometrists, which is the professional, scientific and examining body for optometry in the UK working for the public benefit, has issued this advice regarding your spectacle prescription.

Christmas Galette
Chestnut and Butterbean Wellington
Serves: 4 Preparation: 10 mins Cooking: 25 mins
Serves: 4-6 Preparation: 25 mins Cooking: 1 hour 15 mins
Ingredients
Ingredients
For the pancakes: For the pancakes: 100g buckwheat flour* 300ml milk or soya milk ½ tsp paprika 1 tbsp vegetable oil (and some extra for frying)
For the pastry: 500g vegan puff or shortcrust pastry, in a block Flour, for rolling out
For the filling: 1 tbsp vegetable oil 300g mushrooms, sliced 2 cloves garlic, chopped 40g walnuts, chopped 100g vegetarian or vegan cream cheese 100ml single cream or soya cream 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves, chopped Salt and pepper To serve: 100g vegetarian Cheshire cheese or vegan cheese, crumbled or grated Mango chutney and/or cranberry sauce Small side salad (optional)
For the inner filling: 50g sun-dried tomatoes (oil reserved), drained and chopped 1 onion, chopped 300g cooked chestnuts, mashed 400g tin butter beans, drained and mashed 2 tsp fresh thyme leaves, chopped 50g ready-to-eat prunes, chopped 1 tsp mild curry powder 100g chopped mixed nuts Salt and pepper Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to a rectangle measuring 40cm x 30cm. Cover and refrigerate until needed.
For the outer filling: 400g mixed mushrooms, chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 tsp soy sauce 200g frozen spinach 1 lemon, juice and ½ zest only To glaze: 2 tbsp soya milk
Method 1. To make the pancake batter, whisk the buckwheat flour, milk or soya milk, paprika and vegetable oil together and set to one side. Preheat the oven on its lowest setting.
2. To make the inner filling, heat a little of the sun-dried tomato oil (save some for later) in your largest frying pan and gently fry the onion for 5 minutes. Add the remaining inner filling ingredients, except the seasoning, and cook for another 10 minutes over a low heat, stirring often. The mixture should be fairly dry and hold together. Season to taste and set aside to cool.
2. To prepare the filling, fry the mushrooms in the oil for 5 minutes, then add the remaining filling ingredients and cook for another 5 minutes. Season to taste and keep warm.
3. To make the outer filling, use the rest of the tomato oil to fry the mushrooms and garlic for 5 minutes. Add the soy sauce, spinach, the lemon zest and juice. Cook for 10 minutes, or until all of the moisture has evaporated. Allow to cool.
3. To make the pancakes, heat a little oil in a medium non-stick frying pan. Add a quarter of the batter and cook the pancake for around 2 minutes on each side, until set and lightly golden brown. Slide the pancake out of the pan and fold the edges in to create a square shape with the centre exposed. Place the pancake on a baking sheet, cover with foil or greaseproof paper, and keep warm in the oven. Repeat with the rest of the batter.
4. To assemble the Wellington, line a baking sheet with greaseproof paper and transfer the pastry to it. With the long edge facing you, use the back of a table knife to lightly mark the pastry in half horizontally, giving two long rectangles. Place the inner filling in the top rectangle, leaving a 3cm border around the edges, and form it into a sausage shape. Pat the mushroom and spinach layer all over the filling to form the outer filling.
4. To serve, place each pancake on a warm plate. Unfold the edges, place a quarter of the filling in the centre, then refold. Sprinkle with the extra cheese and add a dollop of mango chutney or cranberry sauce, and a side salad if you like.
breezemagazine 12
5. Brush the pastry borders with a little water. Fold the lower half of the pastry over to enclose the fillings and press all around to seal, then crimp the ends with a fork. Brush with the soya milk and bake for 45 minutes or until golden. Note: This can be baked and chilled for up to three days or frozen for up to three months. If frozen, allow to thaw and then thoroughly reheat.

help fuel the sleigh
this Christmas to ensure all Young Cancer Patients in Nottingham Hospitals receive a special gift from youth cancer charity.
Fuel the Sleigh is the Christmas gift campaign from The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust which aims to provide special gifts to all young cancer patients in hospital at Christmas by collecting donations and gifts. Approximately 500 young people aged between 13 and 24, will be spending Christmas in hospital this year, away from family, friends and the familiar comfort of home; so the charity is ensuring that gifts will be delivered to the 45 hospitals throughout the UK and Ireland that take care of young cancer patients to make sure each one receives something special. Young cancer patients in the Nottingham area will be sent to the Queen’s Medical Centre or Nottingham City Hospital; both of which are supported by The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust. The trust needs your help with kind donations and gifts for young people with cancer aged between 13 and 24. To make a financial donation text FUEL45 followed by the amount you wish to donate to 70070. You can help The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust make a big difference to a young cancer patient’s Christmas by buying an extra gift this year to donate. A list of gift drop off points is available at www.lauracranetrust.org/fuel45 This year’s campaign is in memory of Clinton Stringer, the charity’s treasured and very much missed Father Christmas. Clinton had volunteered for the charity for a number of years and had been instrumental in promoting the gift campaign and collected hundreds and hundreds of selection boxes; which he donated to the LCYCT gift campaign, as well as many other charities and community organisations in his local area.
breezemagazine 14
Clinton sadly lost his battle with lung cancer in July and this year’s campaign is dedicated to him. Clinton and the team at KCSA have been shortlisted for an upcoming Community Award for their tremendous support of this campaign. The Trust Manager, Pam Thornes commented, “This is the eleventh year the charity has run its Christmas gift campaign and it is an emotional rollercoaster because of the kindness and generosity demonstrated by members of the public for the appeal, teamed with the knowledge that many of these young patients are in the fight for their lives. This year’s campaign is especially emotional because it is dedicated to our dear friend and supporter Clinton Stringer.” The charity will be fundraising and holding events in the run-up to Christmas, as well as collecting gifts from shoppers at numerous supermarkets. The fundraising events include The Big Festive Tasting and Sheep (in Reindeer clothing) Racing, both of which will be taking place in Huddersfield. Companies, organisations and individuals can get involved in other ways. Organisations or individuals can Dedicate a Christmas Tree, whether at home or at work, dedicate your Christmas tree to The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust and add a special gift tag that represents a gift for a young patient. Festive Whack-Attack will be a fun way to add competition to your Christmas celebrations or help fundraise by wearing fancy dress on any Tuesday in December, making it a festive Tinsel Tuesday. Donate by texting FUEL45 and how much you wish to donate to 70070 and post your festive fancy dress picture using the hashtag #FuelTheSleigh. The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust urges you to join the fight against teenage cancer and help give a young person in hospital a very special Christmas gift.

Close friends are proving supportive even though they are heavily burdened by their own problems, so you are all feeling the pressure yet know that nothing can last forever and this surreal period will eventually pass, but you are still not sure when or how long it’s going to take. A new flirtatious person will come along unexpectedly, lifting your mood and spirits. Taurus This is not the time for you to waste money just because you are feeling bored. Concentrate on paying off debts thus improving your future financial situation because you are going to experience a complete change of direction in your life. If you are unsettled at work, now is the time to look at other career options or starting your own business. There is nothing stopping you from making a complete success of yourself except your own attitude. Because you are very select with whom you associate with, you can very easily detect who is genuine and the ones with a hidden agenda. You are rarely wrong on matters such as these, much to the annoyance of certain individuals who still feel you can be a little hard on people, but in actual fact you have been proved right on so many occasions, you are advised to keep up the momentum and follow your gut instincts at all times.
It’s been a hard slog so far this year and you are right to question just where your life is going and what to expect in the future. You are in a strong commanding position and master of your own destiny. Whatever you focus on, you will attract, good or bad so be careful for what you wish, because you may get it. A promotion or pay rise at work will put a smile on your face as you finally receive the appreciation and recognition for your efforts and loyalty.
You can never judge a book by its cover so its not great surprise that you may still be wondering why certain people are behaving so strangely. Perhaps they have secrets they would rather not share? In turn, it’s probably a good idea that you keep your personal life under wraps, choosing wisely who to confide in especially matters concerning your romantic life. You may find yourself having to choose between more than one lover. A last minute holiday arrangement could mean that you will be visiting pastures new and once again, meeting new people. Virgo Be aware that not everyone is as organised as you nor do they have the wherewithal to sort themselves out so it will come as not surprise when a close friend or relative shows up with the intention of crying on your shoulders soon regarding the state of their finances. Perhaps they are hoping that you cough up the cash and bail them out? Are you really that stupid? There is an old saying. ‘Never a borrower nor lender is’. Information concerning an ex or current will leave you flabbergasted! And you confidently assumed that you could read them like a book?
Focus your attentions on those who contribute to your life and not those that drain both your energies and wallet. You are about to sever a number of links to a person or people who have stood in your way and held you as their emotional hostage. Scorpio It had been very necessary for you to do a lot of soul searching and being absolutely honest with yourself as to what really makes you happy in your life. Even though you enjoy the company of nice friends and lovers, it is also very important that you enjoy some private personal time alone in order to gather your thoughts. You are beginning to see a number of people in their true light and not overly impressed with their behaviour and attitude making this the right time for you to move forwards . A secret meeting with someone you are communicating with could result in a new long term meaningful relationship that will be a happy one for you both. You are right in keeping personal details to yourself at this stage because the last thing you need is free advice from so called well wishers.
The state of your finances is always important to you as you prefer to remain independent and in charge of your spending. Not everyone benefits from a joint bank account and this could be true in your particular case. A number of career options will become available soon enabling you to change direction with your work. Book a holiday and give yourself the opportunity to enjoy a much needed rest and change of scenery. Pisces Those nearest and dearest to you recognise you are a very private person and tend to keep a lot of personal information to yourself, choosing very carefully whom you confide in. You may experience a bad feeling about someone you have taken an instant dislike to and know that you are right about them. Be guided by your gut feeling as they will prove accurate time and time again. You will be busy wining and dining to the early hours of the morning and thoroughly enjoying yourself whilst others are still chomping on their fingernails wondering what your next move is to be?
Capricorn Perhaps you should learn to recognise your limitations and say ‘no’ occasionally to people who tend to take you for granted and assume that you are at their disposal every minute of the day. Communication from a loved one will put your mind at rest once you know exactly what is happening in their world and where you stand in the equation. Legal documents may also need your attention soon so be sure you know what you are signing

NOTTINGHAM PLAYHOUSE SET FOR A MAGICAL FESTIVE SEASON WITH
Cinderella ...
Renowned as a ‘Midlands institution’, the Nottingham Playhouse panto is returning this festive season – oh, yes it is – with traditional family-favourite Cinderella. Running from Friday 1 December through to Saturday 20 January, Kenneth Alan Taylor’s magical story is set to delight audiences of all ages with its sumptuous costumes and magnificent scenery, as well as a coachload of hilarity, slapstick, song and dance! With a pumpkin that gets magically transformed into a sparkling coach, an array of white horses, a collection of friendly mice, and a glass slipper with magical powers, the classic fairy-tale tells the story of a young girl who’s had her fair share of bad luck. As the well-known story goes; Prince Charming (James Nicholson) is hosting a ball – with the help of faithful side-kick Dandini (Adam Pettigrew) and Cinderella (Kelly Agredo) would give everything and anything to go, but her evil stepmother Devilla (Rebecca Little) and ugly sisters Bella (John Elkington) and Donna (Darren Southworth) have other plans. Can Cinderella escape their clutches and - with the help of her kindhearted Fairy Godmother (Claire Storey) and loveable best friend Buttons (Tim Frater) - find the true love she deserves? Audiences are invited to join Cinderella on her enchanted journey to find true love in the Prince’s arms, whilst avoiding the wicked and cunning tricks from her evil stepmother and ugly sisters. Panto lovers will boo, hiss and cheer as they see this traditional pantomime come to life on stage, and enjoy performances from ‘one of the country’s greatest dames’ John Elkington among other much-loved Nottingham Playhouse panto performers. There will be plenty of glitter, sparkles, dazzling costumes and a spectacular set, and as with all Kenneth Alan Taylor panto’s, it will feature a selection of jokes, puns and panto acting at its best. Tickets cost from £23 with family tickets starting at £100 for a maximum of four people per household, with a minimum of two adults. Groups of ten or more can save up to 20% on selected performance dates. For more information visit www.nottinghamplayhouse.co.uk/groups Listings: Nottingham Playhouse Friday 1 December – Saturday 20 January Mornings 10.15am Matinees 1pm or 2.30pm Evenings 5.30pm, 7pm or 7.30pm There is also a relaxed performance at 10.15am on Wednesday 17 January and a dementia-friendly performance at 2.30pm on Thursday 18 January.

Have an accident free Christmas.... If your house is like mine on Christmas day then you will recognise the following. • Excited children • Toys scattered everywhere • Wrapping paper heaped • Food being prepared • Batteries being hunted down You get the picture, there are a lot of distractions and as a result a lot of potential for accidents. There are a few precautions you can take to avoid electrical related accidents in your home over Christmas. • Make sure Battery Chargers have kite marks (buy from trusted retailer only) • Do not leave ovens/hotplates unattended for long periods without checking • Watch children trying to plug in electronic toys etc • Ensure your socket outlets are in good shape • Be wary of cheap battery operated toys (they can start fires) • Bag up and bin wrapping paper, foil can be a conductor and paper burns easily ... And then we have Fairy Lights Around 350 people a year are hurt by Christmas tree lights, according to RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents). Injuries include people falling while they're putting them up, children swallowing the bulbs, and people getting electric shocks and burns from faulty lights. Test your lights and the wiring before you put them up, as they can deteriorate over the years. If you have old lights, buy new ones that meet higher safety standards, don’t overload sockets, as that’s a fire risk. Have a great Christmas! From John @ AES ELECTRICAL

New tools come onto the market and not all are gimmicks - it is worth trying some of them as you may find a ‘tool for life’. These are a few ideas for you this festive season: The Golden Gark A multipurpose garden maintenance tool, it is a rake, shovel and soil sift in one. This lightweight tool is ideal for clearing up weeds or fallen autumn leaves and much more. The Oscillating Hoe With a razor sharp blade that travels below the soil surface and slices through the weeds where they are most vulnerable below ground. This stops or slows them from rejuvenating themselves because they have no foliage exposed to life giving sunlight. The long handle allows you to reach in amongst vegetable beds without trampling on them. The blade is removable so it can

be interchanged if damaged or worn and it can be re-sharpened. It has a double edge so this garden tool can be used in a forward and backwards action. The Xact Digging spade by Fiskars has an extra strong, sharp blade and non slip step board for penetrating hard soil. It offers an ergonomic fit. Control and comfort is assured thanks to a broad Push-Pull handle. They come in medium size for smaller users has a new innovative head design made of durable boron steel solidly welded to smart composite and steel shafts for optimized light weight, stiffness and durability. Think about the longer term Whilst these may seem ordinary to a non gardener they can really help the keen gardener get the essential jobs done without so much strain and are affordable being non powered. Avoid gimmicky garden gifts - they often fail to deliver and money is better spent on
something durable and genuinely useful. If your recipient is older then consider a replacement for something that may help their back or knees whilst in the garden they will enjoy that over the longer term. Tasks around the garden this month • Continue protecting plants from frost. Collect leaves to make leaf mulch and tidy-up and dig over borders ready for winter. • There is plenty of time from now until the end of December to plant spring bulbs. Save money on trees and shrubs by buying bare rooted stock now ready for planting in early spring. • Cover compost heaps with a layer of old waste carpet to retain heat and keep heavy rain off. • Container plants, especially those in a rain shadow (under eaves or balconies etc.) will still need watering over the winter months. The ideal is to just keep them moist, but not soaking. ... Enjoy!

christmas trees
Planting out live
Choosing a Christmas tree is all part of the fun of the season and many people are deciding on live trees to plant after the holidays, as an alternative to cut or synthetic versions. There are a few points to consider if thinking of planting out your tree at the end of the festivities: • What type of tree do you want planted on your property? A dwarf evergreen may be a better choice for a small garden. • You will also need to consider the tree’s growth rate and what its height and width will be at maturity. Fir is excellent as a cut tree, but it might not find ideal growing conditions in your garden. Pines make very good Christmas trees, but they will get very tall and as they grow, the distance from ground to the first branches increases. • What grows well in your area? Norway spruce is used as a cut Christmas tree, but it’s needles don’t retain water well and you could have problems with a live specimen drying out while it is in your home. • Survival Rate. Don’t select the largest tree. Smaller trees may be in better proportion to the size of the root ball and stand a better chance of survival. Whatever variety you choose, only consider trees that have been recently dug or were container-grown and that look healthy. Many times the bargain trees are leftovers from the growing season. They may be in a stressed condition and might not recover.
Caring for a Live Tree Store the tree in a cool area, protected from winds, freezing temperatures and direct sunlight.Check often to be sure the root ball does not dry out.Once inside, keep the tree away from sources of heat such as radiators, vents or fireplaces. It will still do best in cool temperatures around 60 to 65 degrees F.It’s best to keep the tree indoors for as brief a time as possible, not more than two weeks.Planting Your Tree Outside To plant your tree the depth of the hole should be the measurement from the bottom of the root ball to the soil level. The width should be twice the width of the root ball.Place the soil you remove in a container and store until you need it to cover the planted tree. It’s a good idea to keep the hole mulched and covered so it doesn’t fill in or freeze if you are digging the whole in advance of planting. You might want to mark its location, too.Plant the tree at the same depth it was grown at the nursery or in the container.Try to loosen the outside roots and direct them outward.Refill the hole with the soil you saved and gently heel it in.Water the soil thoroughly after planting and every month or so if temperatures remain mildIf the ground around the tree freezes, apply about 3-6 inches of mulch. For over two years now, something magical has been happening at The White Lion Kitchen and Bar. On the second Wednesday of every month, the bar is heaving as people pick up their drinks and tapas and head upstairs, where they sit at the candle lit tables and face the empty stage. Then it begins. Stories, myths, legends, tall tales, songs, comedy, terror…nobody knows quite what to expect, but they come back for more, month after month, sharing the stories again as they walk into the night.
...beeston tales
This is
The club was formed back in December 2015 when two Beeston based professional storytellers, Tim Ralphs and Mike Payton, decided it was time that they bought their craft a little closer to home (they had both been running successful clubs in Sheffield and Matlock for many years). Mike tells us, “I was at the Oxjam festival in October 2015, watching a great documentary about Beeston in the top room at The White Lion, and I thought it was the perfect spot for a storytelling club…the place was rammed, and I knew that a lot of the Oxjam audience would love to come along to a night of stories. Thankfully, I was right, and we’re still going strong today.” So what happens at Beeston Tales? In the first half, Mike or Tim welcome guest tellers to the floor for a series of short tales, and the half ends with a local musician playing to the interval. After a short break, the stage is taken over by a professional teller, many of whom have never performed in the midlands before. Back to Mike - “We’ve had tellers from Derby, Matlock, Sheffield…but also Denmark, Belgium, Brazil, Sweden and Laos. We’ve had Viking Sagas, Day of the Dead specials, Arthurian legends…too many stories to count!” But aren’t stories just for children, you might ask? Mike tells us that he hears that sometimes, as people are dragged down by their friends who have become hooked. “They are often the ones sitting with their mouths open, desperate to hear what happens next! And they come back.” Mike and Tim both make a living telling tales, travelling widely to perform in schools, museums, festivals, galleries and other stranger venues. However, Beeston Tales is a non profit making community club that they formed to bring something different to Beeston. “We’ve also run training courses for people who want to tell stories better, and many of them now tell at our club, and other places.” There is also an informal story circle that runs once a month, where people can have a go at telling a tale without the pressure of a paying audience. You can find more information about the club on Facebook, or at www.timralphs.com/beeston-tales or email beestontales@gmail.com.

Wednesday13th December, 7.30 pm at The White Lion, Beeston. Tickets £5 in advance , £6 on the door, available from The White Lion, or online at www.timralphs.com/ beeston-tales . balloon club celebrates 40 years...
018 Calendar 2
Nottingham and Derby Hot Air Balloon Club has been a regular sight around Nottingham since 1978. It was started by the then managing director of Nottingham Building Society John Webster who wanted a novel way of publicising the expanding building society. The club’s first balloon was green and white and featured a giant picture of Robin Hood. The club has owned 11 different balloons over the years including the famous Nottingham Building Society cottage shaped balloon. rg.uk www.ndhabc.o The club is run as a non-profit making sports club. Members get involved in all aspects of the sary iver 40 Ann 1978 2018 sport and an elected committee organise the general running of the club. The club holds regular training evenings for new members and trains its own pilots. It is believed to be unique as the only balloon club in the country with membership open to the general public. One of the highlights in the club’s history was in May 2005 when Tim Ward and Dave Briggs flew a balloon across the English Channel as part of a charity event. Other highlights have included attending balloon festivals in India and America. In July 2017 members attended the Chambley World Balloon Festival in France and helped set a new world record of 456 for the most balloons launched in one hour. The club are currently looking to recruit some more members. No previous experience is necessary although it is essential to be a car driver. It is possible to join for a 3 month trial although majority of people enjoy the experience so much they remain active members for several years. Further information about club membership can be obtained by phoning 0115-8541028. The club are also always interested to hear from any local firms that would be interested in sponsoring a banner to be flown on one of the club’s balloons. th
A special A4 sized calendar of stunning aerial views of Nottingham and Derby has been produced by the club to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2018. Copies are being sold at the Tourist Information Centre in Nottingham or can be ordered from the club by phoning 0115-8541028.

The Renewal Trust has launched a new, affordable, multi-sport program for children throughout Nottingham – giving them the chance to try everything from football and cricket to tennis and dance.
could your child be a budding sports star? Developed with the help of parents and children, the Move Program is designed to take children from their first ‘have a go’ sports session, all the way through to professional training with partners including Nottingham Forest FC, Notts County FC and Nottingham Tennis Centre – for those children who want to progress beyond the program. Children can take part in the Move Program from as soon as they’re able to walk up to 5 years old, so it’s a great way to keep your child active and introduce them to sport from a young age. For children aged over 5 years, the Renewal Trust runs the Move Up Program for 6-12 year olds, designed to help them build on their skills and progress into specialist sports training if they want to. Sessions cost £3 per child and are open to children throughout Nottingham. All sessions are held at the Brendon Lawrence Sports Centre on Hungerhill Road in St Ann’s. Cherry Underwood from the Renewal Trust explains: “The Move Program involves three steps – Ability, which we believe all children have; Availability, in terms of offering children a range of sports locally and affordably; and Progression, making sure that young people with talent and the desire to progress beyond the program can move seamlessly into professional training and academies. “We believe all children deserve the chance to try and enjoy as many sports as possible, and benefit from all the advantages that sport provides. For example, one of our Move sessions will give children the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity they need each day and get them into healthy habits from a young age. Plus, sports help children develop a whole range of skills, from motor skills like throwing and catching, to social skills and life skills, like being able to listen and work as part of a team.” Parents already involved in the Move Program are enthusiastic too. One parent whose child attends football sessions at Brendon Lawrence Sports Centre said: “I noticed very early on that coming to Brendon Lawrence brought Caleb out of his shell, so it’s been great in that way, as well as teaching him new skills. It’s good to have something we can do together and the interaction has made the bond between us even stronger. “I’d advise anyone with little ones to come along and take part, it’s a great way for children and parents to get involved in sport together in a fun, unpressurised way.” In addition to the Move and Move Up Programs, the Renewal Trust offers a range of sports for both children and adults at the Brendon Lawrence Sports Centre, including Zumba, Yoga, Kung Fu, Karate, Dance, Badminton, Volleyball and Netball – with Archery and Wrestling coming soon! thank you, from all at the canaan trust... This month a breath of fresh air was blown through the Project by the amazing people at Breeze magazine. Never before has a local media company contacted the Trust to inform us that they have raise money to help us with our work caring for and supporting our Local Homeless! Yes! Everyone here at the Trust was truly grateful for the cheque for £500 which the people of ‘Rewind’ donated to the Trust at the end of November! It transpires that friends of Breeze Magazine held a disco evening resulting in their raising this magnificent sum of money to support the Trust’s work. This time of year is particular poignant for those who are homeless and in need. The homeless are invariably socially isolated throughout the year their lives devoid of hope and love. Come Christmas their loneliness hurts even more as they witness the bright lights and the shops full of goods which we are buying to show our love for those closes to us. At this time of the year the lack of hope, the pain of loneliness, the sense of isolation hurts all the more. The Trust is truly appreciative of the £500 donation from Rewind. It will help the Project spread a little Christmas joy among those who the Trust has helped and supported both as residents who have lived with us in our hostels and those individuals, living across the community, who have needed our help during the course of the year. Among a raft of ways the Project will seek to help bring a smile to their faces the Trust will be holding its annual Christmas Lunch in the Community on the 18th December in the Trinity Methodist Hall on Cross Street. As well as providing our guests with a hearty Christmas Lunch each guest will be given an extra special food parcel and a bag of Christmas treats and goodies.
“We would like everyone who played any part in organising, attending and supporting ‘Rewind’ in their fundraising event to know that your efforts ARE helping make a difference this Christmas. Thank you for thinking of us….. Thank you for caring”. The Project will be working 24-7 throughout the Christmas Season caring for and supporting those who are vulnerable and in need. If any readers would like to consider supporting the Trust’s work then you can make a small donation via your mobile phones – simply send the following text message: ABED14 £5 send that message to telephone number 70700 Homeless Lives Matter. No-one chooses to be homeless – becoming homeless can and does happen to anyone.

fundraising hero’s...
GET INVOLVED Hospice hails its heroes as it celebrates its charity challengers of 2017... Staff at Nottinghamshire Hospice have paid tribute to volunteers who ran, climbed, biked and skydived their way to raising an incredible £26,000 for the charity during 2017. The 49 charity challenge fundraisers were honoured at a recent awards events hosted by the hospice, in Woodborough Road, Nottingham, to say thank you for their efforts. Attended by Sherriff of Nottingham Councillor Glyn Jenkins and Great Britain two times World Champion para-triathlete Steve Judge, the event heard how many of the volunteers had pushed their bodies and minds to the limit, often in memory of a loved one who had benefitted from the care and professionalism of the hospice’s staff. Rowena Naylor-Morrell, CEO of Nottinghamshire Hospice, said: “Whether they ran around the city or took to the skies, none of our work would be possible without our volunteer fundraisers so getting them together to say thank you is the very least that we can do. “The vast majority of our money comes from donations and when you consider we need to raise £2.7m each year to deliver our current service to our patients and their families, you can understand just how much we rely on other people’s generosity. “Everybody who raises money for us has a story to tell, whether they have someone special in mind or they are doing it to prove something to themselves or others, so it was wonderful to meet them and find out more.” To find out more about its Challenge Events for 2018 or any other aspect of fundraising for Nottinghamshire Hospice contact the fundraising team on 0115 910 1008 or email fundraising@nottshospice.org
Have-a-go heroes who are setting their sights on taking on a personal challenge in 2018 are being invited to get in touch with Nottinghamshire Hospice to find out how they can achieve their goal and raise money at the same time. The hospice is looking for volunteers to take part in a year’s worth of sponsored activities which have been drawn up to give people an adventure of a lifetime in return for thousands of pounds of muchneeded funds. They include the chance to walk along the Great Wall of China in October, run the Robin Hood Marathon in September, take part in the gruelling Tough Mudder Half event at Belvoir Castle, cycle from London to Paris or scale the lofty peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in August. The hospice is also looking for daredevils who maybe have a head for heights and who fancy taking part in its Summer Solstice Skydive, which takes place on June 23. Each year the hospice needs to raise £2.7m to deliver its current services, which means it relies on the support of the local community, who, in return, get to experience a challenge that they would never ever have thought possible. Anybody who is interested in finding out more – or who already has a challenge lined up and wants to use it to help the hospice – should contact Elaine Hopkins on 0115 9101008 Ext 251 or fundraising@nottshospice.org
