Meeting Peter Andre was 'insania', says Nottingham Slimming World Consultants

A group of Slimming World Consultants say meeting singer and TV presenter Peter Andre was the perfect way to get set for a super-slimming start to 2015. Meeting the Mysterious Girl and Insania singer was a wonderful way to round off what’s been a great 12 months for Slimming World, as well as the perfect way to kick start another successful year: “We are so proud of all of our members. They’ve lost fantastic amounts of weight throughout 2014, with many of them reaching their target weights and improving their health substantially. “It’s so rewarding to see people achieve things that they didn’t think possible before losing weight, whether that’s wearing smaller-sized clothes, taking up new hobbies, reducing medication or being able to do more with there family and friends. Meeting Peter was a real treat – he was such a nice guy – and a great way to celebrate all of that. Now we feel powered up and can’t wait to help our members hold on to all of the fabulous changes they’ve made and to support even more people to become happier and healthier in 2015.” Peter added since becoming a Dad ”I’ve realised it’s about more than just looking good; it’s much more important to me that I’m fit and healthy and setting a good example to my children. At the awards I met lots of people who’ve lost incredible amounts of weight and it has completely transformed their lives – and their families’ lives too”. “We truly believe that joining Slimming World is the best way for people to lose weight. Getting off to a great start is really important when embarking on a slimming plan; seeing results on the scales and feeling lighter and brighter will motivate people to keep going and achieve their goals. Everyone will be sure of a fab start with Slimming World this New Year and even if people have struggled to stick to weight loss plans in the past, We can help them to make a change for life this time around – our members and their success are proof of that. "Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan isn’t a ‘diet’, we simply help our members to discover new healthy habits and a healthier way of eating that they can enjoy without ever feeling hungry or deprived. They make small easy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat, introduce activity to their daily routine, and get regular support to reward their successes and overcome the hurdles they face along the way. This helps them to stick to their personal goals and can make a big difference to the way members feel about themselves as well as their weight. “On top of seeing success on the scales, our groups are great places to make friends. We’ve had a lot of fun throughout the year – we’ve held parties, raised money for charity and members have cheered each other on with every step of their weight loss journey. We can’t wait to see what 2015 holds for Slimming World and would love anyone who’s thinking about losing weight in 2015 to join us.” New to Iceland Stores on sale from 19th February Delicious Slimming World Meals - why not give them a try!

breeze appeal Find out how you can help a local organisation make a massive difference. Step this way.... On Boxing Day in 2004, millions of people around the world felt their holiday celebrations fall flat as they witnessed the devastation of the Indian Ocean Tsunami. Lee Todd, a manager in the shoe business, watched on television a very poignant clip of a single shoe washing up on a beach in a sea laden with the detritus of human lives. It was an image he never forgot and it moved him to develop the Shoe-Aid charity in 2010. Over the next few years, Lee leveraged contacts built up within the shoe industry to send over 30,000 pairs of shoes to people around the world who needed them, with the logistical support coming from The National Police Aid Convoy. Shoe-Aid is a social enterprise charity established to raise awareness and support for the 300 million children worldwide who walk barefoot every day. In the UK alone, we throw away 2 MILLION pairs of shoes every week. This goes to UK landfill sites and serves no useful purpose. So far, Lee has found the public very supportive. Shoe-Aid offers many unique opportunities for people to get involved. People can donate shoes or organise “shoe-drives” where they collect shoes from family, friends and colleagues. Each year Shoe-Aid organises a barefoot walk at Wollaton Park in Nottingham (which starred as Wayne Manor in Batman Begins). As well as the walk to raise awareness, there are live bands, acts and entertainment for all the family. The event collects funds and shoes for Shoe-Aid but also provides a platform for every charity to get involved and raise money. Shoe-Aid hopes that by providing this multi-charity platform, the positive impact will be felt throughout as many of our communities as possible and reach people who otherwise might

breezemagazine 14

not have received aid. In 2015, Shoe-Aid will be offering places for volunteers to travel to Africa, Eastern Europe or Haiti where they can actively help in the distribution of shoes from the UK and have a potentially life-changing experience as they witness first-hand the work that Shoe-Aid does. Shoe-Aid also has opportunities for businesses to get involved as well. Companies can sponsor Shoe-Aid ‘shoe bins’. The strategically placed shoe bins are used to collect gently used and new shoes. These can be found in participating schools, offices, factories and religious and retail establishments. The sponsorship covers the cost of the shoe bins, which are branded so that the company sponsoring the bin can get valuable exposure as partner to a great charity. Shoe-Aid is working to establish itself as a leading global charity that will continue to provide needed shoes to people in the UK, developing nations, disaster zones and refugee camps. In addition, Shoe-Aid will be establishing micro-businesses in developing countries where they will be teaching people how to create commerce on gently worn shoes. The newly donated shoes will be proudly allocated as designated by Shoe-Aid. Shoe-Aid has collected tens of thousands of shoes for people in need. In partnership with The National Police Aid Convoy the shoes that were collected have benefitted and helped improve the lives of people in the UK, Malawi, Gambia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Russia, Albania, Pakistan, Ghana and Rwanda. Shoe-Aid is also has long-term plans to be able to help those in poverty in the UK with a vision of establishing charity shops throughout the UK for people in need of re-purposed shoes at a nominal price. Shoe-Aid helps the environment by redistributing resources from UK landfill sites to people who need them. Shoe-Aid helps other charities and community projects by giving them a large fund-raising platform to use. Shoe-Aid helps the poor of the world by giving them materials they need, but also boosting economy, business growth and recovery through the creation of micro-businesses – which also helps people to rebuild lives and purpose which restores pride and self-respect. Shoe-Aid strives for the day when all people can walk side by side as equals in comfort because we believe that walking barefoot should be a choice, not a hardship. If you would like to know more about how to run your own shoedrive, how to sponsor shoe bins, how to volunteer with us or anything else you have read about – we would love to hear from you. With various events organised why not see if you can join in and help raise valuable funds... Make your will fortnight 6 – 27th March 2015 Local solicitors across Nottingham have generously agreed to offer appointments free of charge, to help you make or update your will. Instead of paying the solicitor for their professional advice, we ask you to make a donation to Nottinghamshire Hospice. Why make a will? Your will is one of the most important documents you will ever sign and it ensures your estate and possessions can be distributed as you wish. In order to do this it is advisable to use the services of a solicitor, and Make Your Will Fortnight gives you the opportunity to do this. It will also ensure peace of mind and security, not just to you but to those you love, as well as supporting your local Hospice. See web site for more information and form to complete to take part. breeze appeal Every flower counts - Volunteers are needed for the annual stock take of UK’s Wildflowers... Why not be a part of this exciting scheme... The new National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS), launching in spring 2015, will for the first time enable scientists to take an annual stock take of the UK’s wild plants and their habitats, but to do this we need the public’s help. We are looking for volunteers to carry out surveys of wildflowers and their habitats that will provide robust evidence of which widespread plants are increasing or declining, as well as indicating the changing state of our most valued habitats such as grassland, fenland and even road verges. Plants are nature’s building blocks and this new monitoring scheme will sit alongside existing schemes for the UK’s birds and butterflies to help us understand more about how the countryside is changing. Chris Cheffings, from the Joint Nature Conservation Committee says “Currently, information on plant species’ abundance and change is very limited, and it is difficult to gauge the condition of habitats outside protected sites. JNCC is delighted to be able to support the NPMS, which will fill this significant gap in UK biodiversity surveillance. The annual results collected by volunteers will help to identify trends in hundreds of species, allowing us to assess plant community changes.” The search is now on to find 2000 volunteers to take part in the NPMS who will play a vital role in gathering information. Together the volunteers will monitor wild plants in 28 important habitats, ranging from hedgerows and meadows to salt marsh and scree slopes. Hayley New, from Plantlife says “The NPMS is hugely enjoyable and over 400 volunteers have helped us set up the new scheme. It’s easy to do and everyone will receive free training and guidance plus support from the partnership for volunteers who have queries, as well as web support and illustrated guidance notes – so volunteers will have the perfect survey tool kit to get them started!” Dr Kevin Walker, Head of Science, Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI) says:

breezemagazine 20

“It’s really great to finally have a national scheme that everyone can take part in. Whether you simply love wildflowers or are a budding botanist, input from volunteers will provide sound evidence on how our wild plants and habitats are changing. It’s a fantastic achievement and should mean that wild plants are at the forefront of discussions on how our environment is changing and what we should be doing about it.” How does the NPMS work? Volunteers will be able to choose from three options depending on their level of expertise: recording from a short or an extended list of target species in each habitat or recording all species they find in their plots. Volunteers will be given a 1 km square with a grid showing up to 25 locations. Surveyors will be asked to visit three of those locations and carry out surveys in square plots and then identify two linear features such as hedgerows, rivers and road verges and survey these locations too. The squares have been randomly chosen, but with a focus on squares containing habitats of interest. Oliver Pescott, from the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology says “The results from this new scheme Plantlife is the charity should allow us to quantify the speaking up for the smaller changes that are nation’s wild plants. We occurring within our most work hard to protect wild valuable habitats. In the past, plants on the ground and volunteer-collected data have to build understanding of been able to demonstrate the the vital role they play in results of large-scale habitat loss everyone’s lives. Plantlife over the last century, now we carries out practical would like to reveal even more conservation work across detail about the changes within the UK, manages nature the remaining areas of these reserves, influences policy habitats in our landscape.” and legislation, runs events and activities that For more information on the connect people with their NPMS and how to take part local wild plants and works please visit www.npms.org.uk with others to promote the conservation of wild plants for the benefit of all.

breeze appeal Ovarian Cancer Action strives to stop women dying from ovarian cancer by funding world-class scientific research leading to innovative treatment and progressive solutions. They only fund research that can be quickly translated into meaningful outcomes for real women in real life. The Ovarian Cancer Action Research Centre drives new and more targeted treatments from pre-clinical studies, to clinical trials and into gynaecological clinics across the UK. This month World Cancer Day encourages women at risk to be identified as early as possible...

Ovarian Cancer: The facts • It is the most deadly gynaecological cancer and currently the fifth most common cancer among women.

For Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, research charity Ovarian Cancer Action has chosen the theme ‘Right to Know’. Ovarian cancer isn’t as well-known as some other female cancers, yet it is the fifth most common - with more than 7,000 diagnoses in the UK each year. The UK has one of the lowest survival rates in Western Europe, with a woman dying from ovarian cancer every two hours, resulting in 4,300 deaths annually. Even so, treatments for ovarian cancer haven’t progressed much in the past 20 years. Almost one in five (17%) women with ovarian cancer carries a BRCA gene mutation. We all have BRCA genes but the likelihood of developing ovarian cancer if you have a mutation in one of these genes increases from one in 52, to one in two.

• There are 7000 new diagnoses each year in the UK

What are BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes? BRCA1 and BRCA2 are genes that prevent cells from growing and dividing too rapidly. All of us have two copies of these genes. Mutations in these genes can cause cells to become abnormal and grow in an uncontrolled way. Having a mutation in one of these genes can increase a woman’s risk of both breast and ovarian cancer. This can mean that a woman has an 80% chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime and a 35%-60% chance of developing ovarian cancer in her lifetime. How do I know if I’m at risk? If you have just one relative with ovarian or breast cancer this is likely to have happened by chance and not due to an inherited gene mutation. You may be at a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer if: • Two or more of your relatives who are blood related to each other have had ovarian cancer • There have been multiple cases of breast and/or ovarian cancer in your family Ovarian Cancer Action has created an online BRCA risk assessment test, an online calculator to help you explore your family history and make an informed decision about whether you should consider being tested for BRCA 1/2 gene mutations. To explore your family history and assess your BRCA risk visit http://ovarian.org.uk/brca-risk-tool/

breezewhat’s on A Nottingham one-woman theatre company, mon0lisa Productions, is staging a unique new play called ‘A Tale of Two Woman’ to coincide with National Heart Month in February... The play, which is being supported by the British Heart Foundation, will explore how feelings and psychological and emotional issues can affect the way we look after ourselves, and therefore our health. We use many words linked to the heart to describe our feelings, from heartfelt to heartbreak, but do our emotions really affect our heart health? The play will also explore health and wellbeing themes around Jamaican and British cultural identity and belonging, to reflect the ongoing work mon0lisa Productions is doing with the British Heart Foundation to raise awareness of heart health in Nottingham’s African Caribbean community. For example, Lisa created the character of Patty Dumplin’ – a largerthan-life Jamaican lady, who has engaged communities throughout Nottingham with her humorous approach to heart health. This work is part of the Hearts and Minds programme being run by the British Heart Foundation in partnership with Nottingham community organisations, to tackle heart health in Nottingham’s Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities. It’s the first programme of its kind in the UK outside London. Ali Orhan, Project Manager (BME Communities) at the British Heart Foundation says: “Lisa Jackson has worked tirelessly with Nottingham’s AfricanCaribbean communities to highlight their increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke. Her inspiring play brings to life the very real struggles that thousands of people are living with each day and the relationship between our physical and emotional health. “Making healthier choices can feel overwhelming, which is why this year our Heart Month is about making small, sustainable changes to your lifestyle that can have a lasting impact. By taking 10 minutes a day to get moving, adding one or two pieces of fruit more a day, or finding a way to quit smoking can make all the difference – and every 10 minutes counts!” About the play During Lenford’s funeral service, Glorious paints a picture of a caring husband and wonderful father, while Blossom, holding a wake in her living room for the man she loved as a teenager, tells a very different story as she attributes her obesity and ill-health to the man she says abandoned her and their children. Will 55-year-old Glorious cope with her loss and can 69-year-old Blossom finally move on with her life? Lisa Jackson, the one-woman tour de force behind mon0lisa Productions said: “The play is called A Tale of Two Woman to reflect Jamaican patois and it explores the emotional and psychological issues involved in health and wellbeing, against a backdrop of Jamaican and British cultural identity. It looks at how the love of one man by two different women has taken them in different directions in their lives. It’s a story of friendship, love, betrayal and loss and I hope it engages and touches audiences, making them think about their own lives and how health and wellbeing can be affected by things we don’t usually think about, such as culture and the way we deal with emotions.” Lisa has written the play and will perform both main characters as well as directing. She’s also working with a group of African Caribbean women from Nottingham, who have been involved in the Hearts and Minds programme. Lisa explains: “The women are helping me take the play from page to stage, by informing the characters, story and themes. They’ll also be involved in the performance itself and in a post-performance discussion. Their input has been invaluable and I hope I’ll be able to tell their amazing stories in my future plays!” To find out more or to book a ticket please call the New Art Exchange box office on 0115 924 8630. A Dove of Peace was released outside the Town Hall in Beeston last month as a symbol of community cohesion and to demonstrate solidarity in the fight against hate crime. In light of the recent tragic incidents across the world, the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Stan Heptinstall MBE released the dove during a short ceremony yesterday on Holocaust Memorial Day to show support for peace and harmony in the local community. At the event, children from Round Hill School laid white roses on a dove motif on the ground in front of the Town Hall. Local musician Emma Bladon-Jones also performed during the ceremony. Community groups, individuals and organisations joined Councillor Heptinstall to mark this important occasion. Each year for the past fifteen years Broxtowe Borough Council has held a ceremony at Bramcote Hills Park on 27th January to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. This year’s event took place in the Walled Garden at Bramcote Hills Park and included readings from Youth Mayor, Jade Cox and pupils from Hall Park Academy, Eastwood and a song from Springbank Primary School, Eastwood. Members of the Pulp Friction Atmosphere Glee Choir concluded the event with a musical performance.

spring into action... The signs of spring should begin to just about show around the end of February with some signs of our garden friends returning so let’s look at what we ought to be doing next ... Make sure you continue to dig over existing beds and borders, incorporating as much organic matter as you can. This aeration using a garden fork not only helps prepare the soil for spring, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds and hedgehogs! With the expectation of higher temperatures this month (if only slightly!), there is still a risk of frost and even snow so be on your guard and protect vulnerable plants, pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation such as garden fleece around them. Check pots and containers are raised off the ground if possible. Any tender trees and shrubs will greatly appreciate a generous application of dry

breezemagazine 34

mulch to protect their roots from freezing conditions (remember our tutorial on why plants die?) Once the ground has passed any reasonable chance of being frozen you can make new beds and borders. Mark the shape (a good tip is to trickle sand from a bottle) remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over. Incorporate as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf and stack it upside down somewhere out of the way - after a year or two it will rot down into fantastic compost. Remember not to let leaves accumulate around your alpines - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty compost to encourage regrowth.

Clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to the effectiveness of your heating thus saving you energy costs. Get out those garden tools and check them - didi you store them properly or have they caught a bit of rust during their winter rest? Book the lawn mower in for a service and be ready for the first spurt in growth as your lawn re-awakens! As it is still a little cool what about a few nice projects to set up ready fort the spring? Let us take a look at some ideas to set you on the path to creativity and, hopefully, a little ‘upcycling’! (continues......)

(continued...) MAKE YOUR OWN OUTDOOR TABLE/PLANTER

By the simple re-use of an old pallet you can easily achieve the type of urban garden look for your patio. This simple design requires only basic tools • Set square • Claw hammer (to get some of the nails out of the pallet) • Inexpensive plastic mitre guide (optional) • Saw (this can be a hand saw as pallet wood is not difficult to cut) • Battery drill & small pilot bit • Jigsaw (preferable but not essential) • 2cm long screws/size4 • 1/or 2 pallets • 2x1cm outdoor wood strips 1.8m length (thin wood) • 1 x 4cm by 4cm (or similar sized slightly ‘chunky’ wood length) (instead of pallet wood you can buy some cheaper brands of decking lengths) First cut the lengths of wood from the pallet. Where you can, just cut short of where it was nailed as you can then simply discard the bits of wood with those nails in. You should have four pieces of wood to form the sides of your outdoor table. at this point decide if you want to mitre the corners or simply ‘butt join’ them (this is ok in a type of structure such as this so don’t worry about its visual appearance - it even adds to it). Once you have measured and cut your sides to the precise lengths that match to for the basic structure. Do not join them together yet but take a spare piece of your pallet wood and line up the edge of it to the top of one of your length at 90deg angle - you can now mark the thickness of the pallet wood onto your first side: Do this for all four sides. Then you cut four lengths from your thin

wood, to the same length as two of the sides. For the other two sides you must cut the thin wood strips 2cm shorter than the table sides to allow for the other two strips to fit snug when we assemble it. You then fasten the thin strips to the sides, making sure they are position just down from one edge by the thickness of the pallet wood (you measured this in the earlier step). You should now have the basic construction shown left. From these basic parts you have assembled (you will have the four sides of the structure if you follow the diagram image above multiplied four times) you can then go on to create the table by joining the four sides and then adding the legs (fasten them from inside the frame so the screws won’t show) For the centre on the top surface cut a long channel out after you have placed the lengths to form the surface (start a hole with a drill and either use a jigsaw or if you drill several holes you can make a large enough starter slot to get a hand saw in). This centre channel should be made when you have found a suitable planter tray to place in it. Simply screw two lengths of palet wood underneath so they support the lip of your plastic planter tray. Paint or stain the table and plant out with a choice of your favourite early flowering bedding plants! You could also set this up as a mini herb garden - as always - Enjoy!

BE A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER HALF PRICE NEUTERING SPECIAL OFFER AT CHURCHCROFT VETS. Everyone knows that responsible pet ownership means not producing unwanted puppies and kittens. Rescue homes are already turning away needy pets because they are full. All pet owners should arrange for their pets to be neutered so as not to be part of the problem. Luckily, Churchcroft Vets have an amazing half price neutering offer on this month. The offer runs for the whole of February so this is a great time to take action to prevent unwanted puppies and kittens. Of course there are significant health benefits to neutering too so it is a simple decision to make. At Churchcroft Vets, head vet George comments “The evidence is now clear that early neutering is associated with better welfare for pets. In addition, since we have started neutering earlier we have noted that the patients recover more quickly from the surgery. We have also been delighted to find that they do not seem to associate the surgery with an unpleasant experience in the way some older pets do. Best of all, since we now do invisible stitching for all our neuterings there is no need to use those horrible bulky head collars. This makes the aftercare much nicer for the pets and their owners!” Churchcroft Vets are open from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday so busy folk can drop their pets off for treatment before work and pick them up later in the day. Churchcroft’s HALF PRICE neutering offer means cat neutering from just £23 and dog neutering from just £65. Hurry though because places are limited. Call Churchcroft Vets on 0115 922 4855 to take advantage of this deal.

making friends.... Kindred Spirits celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2015 Kindred Spirits began in 1995 and has always existed to help people in later life who are experiencing some form of loneliness or social isolation through bereavement, retirement or simply a move to a new area. Kindred Spirits gives people the opportunities to make friends and socialise at a pace that suits them. There is a team of volunteers and staff who help people along their journey with encouragement and motivation and there is also a monthly newsletter delivered to their door. This is packed with over 150 things to do each month including: exercise classes, lunches, day trips, coffee mornings, walks, special interest groups, holidays, bowling, darts, theatre, social afternoons and lots more! Whilst some activities are included in the membership fee, some have a small charge to cover costs, such as trips and holidays. Carol Wilby, who has managed the service for nine years, says: “I’m looking forward to celebrating our 20th anniversary as it really is a fantastic service. Over the years it has enabled around 3000 people to enjoy lots of different activities. I could list all the activities we provide but actually they are immaterial in a way, it is the platform Kindred Spirits offers for people to make friends, enjoy life and be part of a community that is important. Bereavement, retirement, a decline in health and other life changing situations can often result in loneliness and subsequently a lack of confidence or motivation to get out and about. Kindred Spirits helps people with those first steps along the journey, whatever the pace, to enjoy a fulfilled social life and realise they are not alone.” “Our members constantly provide positive feedback about how the service changes their lives for the better. For example: • Kindred Spirits has changed my life in too many ways to detail. I am happier than I have ever been. • Since becoming a member I have made a new life for myself. • I feel I now have a reason to go out and meet people. • Kindred Spirits enables me to choose as much or as little as I wish to do over the month. It is helping me to have confidence to book things on my own and not to feel isolated. • Having been a member for ten years I have seen with my own eyes the very positive side it has for members in terms of relief of loneliness, sometimes caused by the loss of a spouse. To celebrate Age UK Notts will be holding a special event for our members on Older People’s Day (1st October 2015). If you are interested in finding out more, Age UK Notts hold regular Welcome Mornings where anyone who is thinking about joining Kindred Spirits can drop-in and meet some current members and some of the team, to see if it is for them before they join. The next welcome mornings at its Shakespeare Street office are: Tuesdays 7th April, 12th May and 9th June 2015 from 10.30am – 12noon. To find out more about Kindred Spirits just email membership@ageuknotts.org.uk or give Age UK Notts a call on 0115 841 4473.
