GILLOTTS CHRISTMAS APPEAL RESULT
Gillotts Funeral Directors help give Kimberley charity’s appeal a flying start.
A Kimberley charity’s new drive to raise £25,000 to send families of children and young people with cancer on holiday has been given a flying start thanks to Gillotts Funeral Directors The Ryan Lee Trust, which runs a drop-in centre in Main Street, has launched the new appeal in order to purchase and fit out a fully equipped holiday caravan in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, this month. The charity is hoping that the local business community will help it to raise the money and the first company to answer the call was Gillotts Funeral Directors, which handed over a £1,500 cheque this week. Gillotts, which operates funeral homes in Stapleford, Kimberley, a Eastwood, as and Heanor, raised the money through its annual remembrance Christmas tree appeal last month.
“The Care-avan has the power to make a huge difference to the families who will use it and we are extremely happy to give the fund a head start with the proceeds of our Christmas appeal.” This week Gillotts’ partners Joanne Hutsby and Anthony Topley visited the drop-in centre to hand over the cheque to trust founder Deb Lee, who launched the charity when her son, Ryan, died in 2010 at the age of fifteen after developing five brain tumours. The charity lends much-needed equipment to local families, such as supportive seats, sensory lights and walking frames, but now wants to buy the caravan – which it has called a Care-avan – so that they can enjoy a week away at the seaside. Deb said: “We are extremely grateful to Gillotts for their kind donation, which represents a wonderful start to our Care-avan Appeal.

“Raising £25,000 is a big task and we hope that businesses and individuals in Kimberley will be able to help us to achieve it because it promises to become a much-needed lifeline for families. Joanne Hutsby, a partner at Gillotts Funeral Directors, said: “We have got to know Deb and her team extremely well over the years and we know what a great and worthy cause the Ryan Lee Trust is.

love it, cook it, share it. Local Slimming World groups celebrated the start of Free Food February, which is named after the healthy Free Foods its member can enjoy without weighing, counting or measuring when losing weight on Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. Free Food February is being held in Slimming World groups up and down the UK during February and aims to show how the organisationís members lose weight without hunger and often discover (or rediscover) a love of cooking. It coincides with the publication of Slimming Worldís latest recipe book Free Food Feasts*. Members of the local groups, created a delicious feast for the event. Members each brought along a dish made entirely from Free Foods, which include fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, eggs and more, showing that Slimming World members never need to suffer the hunger pangs that usually see people throwing in the towel on other weight-loss plans. Now the slimmers have challenged one another to share their new love of healthy food with the local community, including cooking for their families, hosting dinner parties for their friends and making nibbles for their colleagues. Consultants certainly believe preparing, cooking and eating the same meals and supporting one another on their weight loss journeys has been key to their success. When members first join Slimming World groups they cannot believe how much food they could eat and still lose weight. Making

small changes to the way they cooked meals meant that they could still enjoy all of there favourite meals like curries, bolognese, roast dinners, pasta, chips cheesecake and enjoy spending time in the kitchen and love sharing new recipes with family and friends - they taste so good and people can never believe they can eat all the food and still lose weight. Since joining Slimming World members, say: “We’re lucky because as well as the support we had from each other, the rest of the group have also been there for us. a fairy tale...

Rachael’s fairy doors is a small family company created by chance after a poor purchase which left them feeling that they could do much better. Here is their tale of what happened for real as told by Rachael Kemp, the ‘Queen Fairy at her little workshop in Bramcote! “One weekend whilst perusing the web for interesting things for Christmas I stumbled across a fairy door. I purchased and it arrived but I was most disappointed with the quality. I showed my husband who commented that we could do better ourselves …. Challenge accepted! We had both several years earlier given up our full time jobs to care full time for the two siblings we had fostered back in 2009, now that both boys were now full time at school, we had thought about hobbies we could do from home. In November 2014 I started making a few doors and posted the images on my Facebook page, people loved them and asked where they could buy them. We hadn’t thought about selling them but before we knew it I had orders for a dozen. It turns out everyone loves and believes in Fairy’s and what better way of inviting them into your home than through a magic portal attached to your skirting board? We started experimenting with designs and styles, before we knew it we had a range of thirty doors and had our own facebook page. After a few months we decided to have a website built a big step for a small business but we wanted to get our doors out for everyone to see. The website went live as did the sales. Rachael’s Fairy doors was official. Both hubby and I now work full time from home from our workshop at the top of our garden, we love the freedom that working for ourselves gives us. We can still

fit all the training and meetings that come with fostering around the fairy doors and have lots of time to spend with the boys. Our youngest is so proud of our fairy doors and tells everyone that we make fairy doors and that he has thirteen in his bedroom…most of them taken from my workshop when I’m not looking!” Rachael’s fairy doors hopes to fill the world with magic and sparkle one door at a time. breezegardening This month we look at a basic but popular method used for different plant types ahead of the growing season. gardeners seem especially gifted at turning it their food crops of home grown cabbage, carrots, onions, parsnips, potatoes and other delights. In fact they have learned just what is necessary to tend to each of these plants and to manage the pests that may predate on them. Grow bags Commonly used throughout the gardening world these are versatile and most helpful. They are also less prone to pests as the soil is contained.
Last month we looked at the basic types of plants and the soil ph. These things do matter. What also matters is when we plant and how we maintain good plant growth through watering and feeding. Plants vary so much between species that the level of care can vary to quite intensive. The learner gardener need not be put off by this - simply learn the basics with easier to grow plants and work along to ones that may need that bit more expertise as you gain knowledge. It is often the case that good horticultural

Preparing to plant Always loosen the compost by shaking and kneading it in your hands whilst still sealed. Flatten the bag back out, making sure compost is evenly spread. Pierce the base of bag for drainage (a few small holes here and there with a hand fork will do) then turn over and cut out the pre-marked planting squares or, if you are planting rows of salads, cut out a long rectangle. Scoop out compost from each square leaving a hole big enough for the root ball of your plant. Put your chosen plant in each hole and refill around it with compost so that the top of
each root ball is just below the top of the bag. Water them well and make sure you label the bag. What you can grow in a bag Growing bags are really suited to plants that don't have deep roots, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, chilli peppers, aubergines and courgettes. Plant two to three plants in each bag during spring. Alternatively, cut a long panel in the top of the bag and sow salads in rows. Endive, lettuce, basil and rocket can be sown from spring to late summer. If you are growing salads, prepare the bag as before and cut out a long panel on top of the bag. Plant or sow in rows across the width of the bag. Aftercare When taller growing or top-heavy crops (e.g tomatoes) are 20cm (8in) high, push a cane into the bag next to each plant. Tie the plant to the cane and attach the cane to a frame. This will prevent the plants from toppling over in the wind or if they become top heavy. Keep the compost moist and feed plants such as aubergine, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers with a high potash fertiliser when flowers appear - this will ensure you get the plumpest fruit. When crops have finished, split the bag open and recycle the compost as a soil conditioner in the garden. continued...

breezegardening Planning ahead to early spring Yes, there is always a time to plan ahead in the garden something therefore to look forward to! Why not try sowing some lobelia this month? Sprinkle seeds on a surface of a good seed compost and gently firm down. Place the seed tray in a propagator (plastic covered tray) at a temperature of 18-24C (indoors near a window is ok). Keep the soil damp but not wet. Do not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes around two weeks and will take us towards March and early spring! When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions such a porch or a small coldframe with small heat source such as paraffin lamp to ward of the frost at night. When large enough they can be planted outdoors. When lobelia plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over around ten days. Transplant them outdoors in full sun or semi-shade on moist, fertile, well drained soil at a distance of 10cm apart. You can use pots or window trays or the ground itself. As always, keep learning with us and aiming to grow your knowledge and enjoy!

CALLING ALL RUNNERS – TAKE ON THE BROXTOWE BADGER RUN Runners in Broxtowe are being urged to join 250 others in the local area to take part in a challenge with a difference next month, to help raise as much as possible for an armed forces charity, Forces in the Community and Nottingham Children’s Hospital, which looks after sick children. Broxtowe Sport, Broxtowe Borough Council’s Sport Development Team have teamed up with Virtual Runner to host the Badger Run where participants complete a ‘virtual’ 5K, 10K or a half marathon distance, picking the time, the place and the route they wish, all in aid of Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw’s chosen charities, Nottingham Children’s Hospital and Forces In The Community. Whether it’s at the park, on the road, at a local parkrun or even on the treadmill in the gym, complete the challenge with friends, colleagues, family or solo. Distances must be completed between the 1st February 2016 and 29th February 2016 and once completed, Virtual Runner will send each participant their very own badger shaped medal. The idea of a virtual run came from Virtual Runner founder, Susan Wheatcroft. She said: “The idea for the venture came from my frustration of not being able to find a race in January one year that was close to home which worked around my busy work and home life. I had been running for 2 years and I’d really caught the bug and needed a challenge.” Councillor Bagshaw said: “The badger is a symbol of Broxtowe and I’m so grateful to Susan for coming up with the idea of the Badger Run. We’ve already had 250 sign up to help support these worthy causes and I urge anyone else who would like to help to sign up today.” The event costs £10.00 to enter at www.virtualrunneruk.com.
