n o i t i t e p m co Bored with the Gym? You should go for a free lesson at The Dojo on Humber Road in Beeston. If there is one thing that they hear from members all the time it is that they want to get fit but they want something more, they want to achieve something, not just the same routine in the gym. That is exactly what you get when you learn Karate at the Dojo. It's far more exciting to learn a new skill especially one that enables you to defend yourself and that can enrich your life in so many ways. For one lucky reader we’ve got one years FREE Adult or Child membership up for grabs... At the Dojo you enter to a reception hallway where you walk through to the Lounge area with solid oak floors, leather sofas and flat screen TV, where you can observe training in the Main Hall. The Hall (Dojo) is a fully air-conditioned room, 1500 msq, fully matted with disabled toilet. One side of the hall is fully mirrored and ballet bars for stretching the length of the hall. There is a traditional Makiwara (striking post) as well as strike dummies, punch bags and many more pieces of training equipment. They have a comprehensive timetable of classes to suit all ages and abilities and they have a dedicated group of instructors under the guidance of owner and Former World Karate Champion Aidan Trimble 7th Dan “I have students from 6 years to 70! And all of them are catered for in classes that are appropriate to their age and ability. All my instructors are highly experienced and qualified” say's Aidan who is one of the highest ranked instructors in Europe. In 1983 Aidan became the first Britain to win a World Karate Title in Tokyo, Japan at the age of 22. You might ask - Why Choose Karate? - For Health Karate consists of a good mixture of cardiovascular endurance, strength training and flexibility exercises that are designed to benefit the whole body.“Our purpose is to make sure that you work at a level that is comfortable, yet challenging. People feel good when their healthy, with a healthy body, you have a healthy mind”. For Self Defence The effectiveness of good karate is well known and is used by many people in the security industry. The key to self defence however does not rely on punching and kicking alone, learning to be aware is one of the most useful skills you will learn until that awareness becomes a natural way of thinking.“We don't want people to be paranoid or scared to walk the streets or to go to school, but many bad situations can be avoided and when they can’t you will be taught the techniques and strategies to deal with them”. For Concentration And Focus Concentration is something that for many people has to be taught. Many doctors are now recommending people with learning difficulties to practice karate because of the concentration skills that are developed through the training; however we can all benefit from increased concentration, focus and co-ordination. If you are interested in having a free trial session at the Award Winning Dojo call 0115 875 4212 or visit our web site at www.thedojo.biz You can also enter our competition at the dojo website, www.thedojo.biz click on the link ‘SPECIAL OFFER’ and put your answer in the box ‘What do you want to achieve from Karate?’ along with your own details.

l a e p p a e z e bre ‘Guiding is always full of challenges – and surprises!’ was the reaction of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire County President Anne Allery when presented with a challenge to drive a tank. Breeze finds out more...

The experience was prompted by the Adventure 100 scheme, one of Girlguiding UK’s centenary initiatives which encourages members to earn points by completing challenges under such diverse headings as ‘In the Dark’ night-time adventures and ‘Wet & Wild’ activities on water. Anne’s invitation to drive a tank as part of her ‘Moving’ mission was organised in secret by colleagues at Girlguiding Nottinghamshire, who were aware of the personal significance of the challenge. ‘I grew up close to the Ordnance Depôt in Chilwell during the war and my earliest memories are of sitting in my pushchair and hearing tanks rumbling past,’ explains Anne, who still lives in Beeston.‘This must have had quite an impact on me as the hairs still rise on the back of my neck when I see one.’ The adventure took place in a field near Husband’s Bosworth in Leicestershire.‘All the way there I was wishing I was somewhere else,’ admits Anne. Having been kitted out in helmet and camouflage fatigues, she did the first circuit as a passenger, then was given a headset and invited to get into the driving seat. This had to be specially raised to let her see out of the tiny window once the turret was closed. ‘You just never know what Guiding is going to encourage you to do, even when you are of more mature years,’ says Anne, who first joined the organisation as a Brownie when growing up in Chilwell and was appointed County President of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire in 2008. Her third circuit in the tank went as smoothly as the first two, and she drew the adventure to a close by reversing neatly into a parking bay. ‘This experience might only have gained me 10 points in the Adventure 100 scheme, but it was worth thousands to me,’ reflected Anne as she clambered out of the turret. ‘I think I might cope better with tanks now – though I haven’t come across one since!’ Girlguiding Nottinghamshire currently has almost 9,000 members across Enquiries from adults wanting to help girls and young women make the county, all of whom have been involved in centenary celebrations over the most of life through Guiding are always welcome and should be the last 12 months. directed to Girlguiding Nottinghamshire county headquarters on 0115 987 7220, e-mail office@girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

NEW YEAR NEW YOU

Leading local Psychotherapist, Martin Smith PhD based in Long Eaton seeks to dispel some of the myths around therapy and get people to realise the true benefits good psychotherapy can do to change lives Myth One – it is going to be too expensive; yes therapy can appear expensive but compared to the potential to a better life, can we really compare? Martin does not advocate weekly sessions and actually aims to lengthen the time between sessions, often two to three weeks and longer, this not only benefits you but your pocket as well. Myth Two – it will take a long time; many therapies now focus on solutions and ways to move forward quickly and effectively. Martin looks to develop ideas with you which can be taken away and practiced immediately. Myth Three – it will be painful; knowledge of the Brain tells us going over old issues can be quite detrimental, some insight into the issue is useful but ways to move forward are even better. Martin aims to give a productive and positive slant to therapy and can help you if you are suffering from an issue or complaint which has been taking over your life, if you want to regain control of your life then give Martin a call now on 07 973 410 010 or email him at itctherapy@aol.com

NEW YEAR NEW YOU Put your best foot forward in 2011 with expertise and amazing results courtesy of foot expert Marion Mortimer. “There are many conditions that cause painful feet but we can all help ourselves to identify problems that impede our quality of life”, explains Marion Mortimer. “A few of the most common complaints we can help you with are verrucae, corns, callus, ingrown toe nails and fungal nail infections. Also, as we grow a little older and perhaps a little less agile, it becomes increasingly difficult to cut nails and deal with problem areas. Very often, feet become rigid and inflexible and with 26 bones in each foot, there is little wonder that they begin to seize up. It is never too soon to embark on a plan of treatment, massage and exercise that may help to delay the effects of the passage of time. Our patient base ranges from a seven year old to the over 90’s and it’s easy to make an appointment for prompt, personal attention, just call 0115 9393662 or mobile 07876 445082” ‘Top drawer treatment, would highly recommend you to anyone with foot problems’ RB Stapleford ‘Treatment by someone who cares. As you age your collagen production slows, This thins the skin and wrinkles start to form. The use of Red Light is the most powerful and effective way to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Red Light Therapy is the use of light to create an anti-aging effect on the skin and is quickly becoming recognized as one of the safest, fastest and most affordable ways to achieve younger, more vibrant looking skin. Red Light contains no UVA or UVB rays and won’t tan your skin. Red Light Therapy will Diminish • Formation of Fine Lines and Wrinkles • Broken Capillaries, Stretch Marks and Cellulite • Scarring and Repair Cuts The process is also very effective at treating: • Eczema • Acne • Psoriasis • Sun Damage Fine lines and wrinkles result through the lack of collagen and elastin in the skin. Red light penetrates into the dermis layer of the skin, energizing the cells, thereby helping to create collagen and elastin, much the same as when you were younger. Collagen helps to plump up the skin, while elastin helps to firm the skin thus diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. It’s that simple! Red Light Therapy is a non-invasive, requires no surgery, no harsh chemicals, no lasers, there is no downtime or recovery time, it’s safe for all skin types, and most importantly it works! It is today’s natural skin care at its finest. Discover this amzing technology for yourself at Beyond Bronze, 137 Attenborough Lane, Attenborough NG9 6AA. Telephone: 0115 925 9191 for more details.

The Phoenix Childrens Foundation was established as a registered UK charity in 2006 to raise monies to provide disabled and severely ill children throughout the UK with vital equipment and/or therapeutic activities. The aim is to help these special needs children with their physical and mental development in order to enhance the quality of their lives.

breezemagazine 22

The charity relies entirely on the generosity of the general public for its funding. One of the policies of the charity is to endeavour where possible to allocate funding to support the disabled and severely ill children in the area in which it is raised. One of the organisations they support is Riding for the Disabled. Riding provides disabled children with a feeling of freedom and independence, which is something we all take for granted. It also helps many children with their coordination and builds up their strength. They support many RDA groups either with equipment or funding for children to have riding lessons. The charity has a number of miniature Shetland ponies, primarily used as petting ponies for disabled and sick children when visiting children’s hospices and special needs centres. These tiny ponies are adored by both children and adults alike and bring joy to everyone who comes into contact with them: they help the team enormously in our local fund raising efforts. As a charity, they also offer a Sponsor a Pony scheme. The main purpose of the scheme is to raise extra funds to be used towards the upkeep of the ponies to include hoof trimming, vaccinations, worming, provision of rugs etc. The cost to sponsor a pony is a minimum of £5.00 per month, for which you will receive a quarterly newsletter, Birthday and Christmas Cards. A photograph of your chosen pony will be sent to you upon completion of your registration form. For more information contact 01530 267116. he first diving qualification is known as the “open water course”. This is your passport to the under water world. It is split into three parts, pool sessions, classroom sessions and actual ‘open water’ diving. ‘Diveintheblue’s’ most popular approach to obtaining this qualification is known as a “PADI dive referral”. The ‘PADI dive referral’ enables you to complete the pool and classroom sessions of the ‘open water course’ in your spare time with an English speaking instructor before you go on holiday. This allows you to spend more of your valuable holiday time admiring the exotic marine life rather than sitting in a class room or learning the basic skills of diving in a swimming pool. The ‘Diveintheblue’ open water dive referral course comprises: Three pools sessions. Two classroom sessions. A free pool session just before you go on holiday to refresh your skills. When you have completed these parts, they will give you the official ‘PADI dive referral’ documents to take with you on holiday. Whilst on holiday you then only have to complete four more dives in open water before becoming a qualified open water scuba diver! They can even arrange this diving with reputable dive stores for you. Just want to try it? ‘Diveintheblue’ also offers taster sessions so that you can try diving and learn the basic skills before you commit to an ‘open water’ qualification. This is known as a ‘discover scuba dive’ and is the first step towards an ‘open water’ qualification. At the end of your ‘discover scuba dive’ they will give you an official PADI certificate. Any dive store in the world will recognise this and allow you to use it as credit towards any other diving you decide to do! During discover scuba diving sessions they will even take underwater photos of you so that you can show your friends what you’ve been up to! These will be emailed to you at no extra cost. Inner Wheel have had a busy few months since September. Breeze caught up with them to find out exactly how they have enjoyed themselves... In September President Pauline and several members assisted Church Wilne Rotary with their annual Charity Horse Ride some members helping with the marshalling and also serving hot food and drinks. This was much appreciated by the riders and friends. In October, instead of their normal meeting a visit was arranged by President Pauline to The Galleries of Justice in Nottingham. It turned out to be a day of fun and laughter. Also in October they were invited to the annual Rotary Ladies Night dinner. During the evening President Pauline presented to President Barry Woodhead a twenty five year badge on behalf of Inner Wheel, marking the 25th anniversary since the formation of the Rotary Club. Vice President and Overseas Organiser Monica Welbourne held a ‘Bring and Buy’ Coffee Morning. This was well attended and was in aid of the Pakistan Disaster. In November, a visit was arranged by Susan Stalker to ‘Banrocks’ of Loughborough for a Flower Demonstration with a Christmas Theme. They were then able to look around and buy early Christmas Presents, the evening ending with a mince pie and a glass of wine. Their Christmas Dinner was held at the White Hart in Aston on Trent on 1st December. A great evening was had despite the Arctic Weather, with a lovely meal. During the evening instead of giving presents to ourselves it was

decided to bring a gift for a child of approximate value £4 and these will be distributed by President Pauline’s local church. The evening finished with party games. On December 13th many Inner Wheel members were guests of Rotary, this being a Christmas Meal with wives/partners at The White House, Kegworth. Inner Wheelers did a light sketch which caused much laughter, a great evening was had by all. Finally they ended the year by joining in with The Rotary Club’s Carol service at Church Wilne on18th December, finishing the evening with mulled wine and mince pies.

The Healthy Weigh has given such successful results for one member they wanted to write in and share it with Breeze readers: “The Healthy Weigh group is run by Kim Moss with an informal but structured approach. Each member is treated by her individually, with sensitivity, respect and dignity. She also values confidentiality. Kim takes the time and trouble to get to know each member, learning their personal needs and delivers the appropriate support. She is approachable and friendly, but at the same time knowledgeable and professional. The main aim of the group is obviously to lose weight, thus prompting and promoting a healthier life style and future. Kim welcomes group participation and feedback from members. This can range from products on the market, an article in the press, or general views. Kim totally believes and maintains that eating the correct amount of calories, understanding food values and components and watching portion size really does work. She has living proof, knowing the total weight loss of the group between April 2010 to present is a staggering 97 stone and 3lb”. The Healthy Weigh Tel: 07792 314 896

promotion January is the busiest time of the year for family lawyers as clients seek advice on family breakdown. Christmas and holiday periods can be a stressful time for many families, as the pressure to meet unrealistic expectations, as well as the added financial strain at this time of year can be too much for some couples. If there are already problems in a relationship, the added pressures at this time can result in some couples deciding they have had enough and that it is time to separate. At Ellis-Fermor & Negus Solicitors they have specially trained collaborative lawyers who will work with you and your partner (and their lawyer), to resolve the matters arising from your relationship breakdown without the need to get the court involved to make decisions for you. This approach isn’t for everyone, but it does give you your own voice and real control over the outcome of your situation. Your partner will of course, have to also enlist a Collaborative Law specialist. There are many issues to consider at a time of relationship breakdown. If there are children involved, which parent should they live with and how often they will see the other parent? Should there be a shared care arrangement? A house may have to be sold or transferred. There may be concerns about debt issues. How much maintenance should be paid? Should there be a divorce or should there be a trial separation? Ellis-Fermor & Negus family lawyers can provide independent legal advice on all of these issues and more, to help you make the best decisions for your and your family. “To talk to us about the best approach you should take to resolve your issues please contact our family solicitors Sarah Slack at our Beeston office on 0115 922 1591.

gardening

Hmm..... so you thought there was nothing to do in the garden this month! Well read on - time spent now will help make your gardening an easier task later in the year.

Get wrapped up and move the unsightly items that have gathered over the winter months. The odd brick, stone, rubbish you meant to move before the weather turned. Take the bags of weeds and rubbish to the tip. Keep yourself moving - a great way to burn off calories and get you longing to chow down on your winter broth! Generally give everything a sweep around, it may not last but it will keep the look of your garden neat until the next lot of snow or bad weather. Feed the birds and other small creatures which may not be able to find food due to snow on the ground or other causes. If there is snow on the ground and you don't have a feeder, a simple piece of plywood, a scrap of carpet or even cardboard will create a very good feeding area. It's easy to clean it off turn it over if it happens to get covered by a fresh snowfall. In the event of snow, be sure to shake or brush off the white stuff from the branches of your evergreens and shrubs. The light fluffy snow poses no real threat, but if it should become wet and frozen, the weight dramatically increases. Branches are more brittle when the plants are dormant, and the weight of the snow may snap them off.

breezemagazine 34

Dormant spraying of fruit trees, Cotoneaster, Dogwoods, etc. should be done this month. It's a good time to prune most of your deciduous trees and shrubs. Fireplace ashes should be saved to use a fertilizer for your Iris and other alkaline soil plants. If the ground is workable at all (not frozen and not too wet), now is an excellent time to turn the soil. Not only will this expose insect eggs to the effects of winter and hungry birds, the freezing will help to break apart heavy clods of dirt. Don't forget your house plants! Dust on the foliage can clog the leaf pores, so clean them up a little with a damp cloth, or a quick shower under the tap. Actively growing plants will benefit from a shot of liquid plant food. On very cold nights, it is a good time to close the curtains or blinds between the window and your house plants. Make certain that your plants have sufficient humidity, by setting them on a tray filled with clean pebbles, and a little water,or by simply setting a cup of water nearby. Extra time this month might well be spent getting the garden tools ready for spring. Sharpen and oil tools such as shovels, shears, mowers and the like. Power tools such as weedeaters and power mowers may benefit from a good tune-up. Could the wheelbarrow use a fresh coat of paint? It's not to early to begin to think of a strategy for new spring plantings. You might want to create a small map of your garden, and use it as a guide for ordering plants and seeds from the catalogs which will be arriving in the mail soon. And don’t forget we have the experts on hand to give you advice, help get your garden prepared and even tidied up to make sure when you look out of your window you can take comfort knowing your garden is a haven for you to relax in when we do eventually get some nice sunny days!

Wow! What a day... Nottinghamshire Hospice’s first ever Santa Stroll event was a great success! The event saw over 200 people of all ages braving the cold weather and dressing up as Santa to show their support for Nottinghamshire Hospice. The walk started at Nottingham Castle, which provided a beautiful backdrop in a blanket of snow, and followed a short route through Nottingham City Centre, much to the delight and surprise of the Christmas shoppers! Many were getting out their phones and taking pictures to prove to their friends and family that there was such a thing as 200 Santa’s approaching them with Santa’s Reindeer taking the lead! Tina McTighe, Event Fundraiser for Nottinghamshire Hospice said;“It’s been a fantastic day! It’s great to see the support from the Nottingham community, and what a sight…it was amazing to see 200 Santa’s heading down the hill from the Castle towards the city centre singing Jingle Bells! Same time...same place...next year I hear you say? Definitely!” A huge thank you to each and every Santa who joined in at Nottingham Castle to help raise money and the profile of Nottinghamshire Hospice. Also, thank you to all the volunteers, suppliers and everyone involved in making the day such a huge success. All the money raised will go towards providing free care and support for those living with a life limiting illness in Nottinghamshire.

By ANNE HARBOUR Dip.Hyp. HPD. MNCH - Clinical Hypnotherapist HPD. Member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (MNCH) Telephone: 07845 405835 LIBRA [22nd Sept-21st October] January 2011 becomes a busy month with plenty to do for others. You find that distancing yourself a little from another becomes essential when giving emotional support. Looking toward the future with new and bright ideas you enjoy a heart to heart with those you love. With plans already made you enjoy time with family.

CAPRICORN [22nd Dec-21st Jan] Doubts and fears soon fade when romance is put in the background with loved ones making up for lost time. Going back to places old and familiar brings tears of joy and with a return visit not too far away. Adventurous and with a sense of fun you make the most of one day latter part of the month. Sorting out the old from the new helps.

SCORPIO [22nd Oct-21st Nov] This month you are determined that any difficulties of late are put right when meeting up with those you love. Seeing sense when others cant drives you to despair, no longer wasting your time or energy you pull away feeling better for doing so. Spending a day or two away gives you food for thought returning stronger than ever.

AQUARIUS [22nd Jan21st Feb] Being kept busy is one thing but fitting everything in during the month may become challenging. Driven by your own desire to do well, you impress those that have become important in your life. Not happy with a person’s attitude toward another you stand back waiting for a time to remind them of how they were supported in the past.

SAGITTARIUS [22nd Nov-21st Dec] Although a challenging month ahead you make it quite clear you will do things your way. Partners are happy to go with the flow to see end results. With your attitude and frame of mind you succeed in reaching certain goals. Making plans for the foreseeable future may be put on hold until both parties are satisfied all has been dealt with.

PISCES [22nd Feb-20th March] This month becomes quite memorable regarding romance and future gains. Meeting influential people and listening to sound advice eliminates pressure. Re-organising a day to suit when others cant helps speed up important arrangements made. Travelling against you will prove beneficial to more than one person. Relaxation end of month.

The Pearson Centre for Young People are performing their 61st Annual Pantomime, Robinson Crusoe, from Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th January 2011, at the their premises on Nuart Road, Beeston. The cast comprises of club members from 17th Nottingham Boys’ Brigade, 30th Nottingham Girls’ Brigade and Friday Night Live. The cast is pleased to welcome many new faces in the chorus line, whilst seeing a number of members taking on more senior roles. This year, they have a new Principal Girl – Ellie Green who plays the part of Elizabeth Buttons, with Amy Green, her elder sister, performing the role of Principal Boy – Robinson Crusoe. Following a successful previous performance as a baddie, Joe Langford takes on the role of Demon of the Deep. “We are also pleased to welcome back Philip Woodhead who plays Blue Beard. Martin Collins, producer and director commented ‘we are really looking forward to this pantomime, particularly as we have quite a few members, who for their first time will be taking on principal roles. It is, therefore, great to have been able to make promotions, enabling them to perform more senior roles. With a number of new cast members rehearsals have become more intense, however, the young people have risen to the challenge and are putting 110% into the rehearsals. We are hoping that we shall have full houses, particularly as we have such fantastic premises to go with this brand new version.” Tickets are available now priced at £4.50 for adults, £3.50 for children and OAP’s, £12.00 for family tickets (2 adults and 2 children). Performances commence at 7.15 pm, with the Saturday matinee at 2.30 pm. Tickets can be obtained from The Pearson Centre, 2 Nuart Road, Beeston, by phone on 0115 9254112 or e-mail enquiries@thepearsoncentre.org.uk.
