Local Care SENIOR CITIZENS DANCE THE DAY AWAY! Home Instead Senior Care and the Rotary Club of Beeston hosted their annual Christmas party for senior citizens at the Beeston Roman Catholic church hall in Foster Avenue on Friday December 12th 2014. Along with 30 guests who attended were members of the Rotary Club of Beeston, dressed for the occasion in suits and black ties, some of Home Instead’s CAREGivers and office staff. Senior citizens attending the party had been collected by the CAREGivers and Rotarians, who gave their own time to make sure that everybody got there and back home safe and sound. A warm welcome met the party-goers at the door of the church hall. Rotary Club members cooked a fresh Christmas meal with all the trimmings whilst pouring a glass of sherry which was followed with mince pies, coffee and mints. The entertainment began with a visit from the Round Hill School choir who came and sang Christmas carols and songs. This was followed by a visit from the Dawn Harrison Horton dance studio and their very capable performers who treated the audience to ballroom style dancing. The music got everybody in the right mood and dancing lessons followed with most attendees participating and learning the right steps to tango and mambo! As a final farewell a raffle was drawn and presents were given to everybody. A good day with plenty of food, music and laughter! “To find out more about being a CAREGiver give us a ring or send us an email. Regardless of age, background or experience we would like to hear from you”. Please call 0115 9677303 or send an email to Lynda.Stevenson@homeinstead.co.uk

One of our CAREGivers was r e c e n t l y interviewed as part of a careers recruitment programme. When asked about the role, Katie who is 26, said; “I have regular clients and depending on my availability I work 20-24 hours a week, this is perfect for me as I have young children and I can fit work around them. Twice a week I take a lady who is 86 shopping, she loves going out and looking around the shops. Without me to assist her she wouldn’t be able to do that” Katie also said; “If you are thinking about becoming a CAREGiver I would say it is a very satisfying and rewarding job, it is not the job you first think it is, you walk away at the end of the week knowing you have made a difference to somebody’s life, who without you would not necessarily have the quality of life they want to have”

New Year, New Start Now that Christmas is behind us but we are still within the grips of Winter many of us start to think about home maintenance and the jobs that we have been putting off.
Give your boiler an annual service. Calling in a Gas Safe registered Heating Engineer to carry out an annual boiler service ensures your heating systems are not only working properly but are safe to use. They will also check the system is working as efficiently as possible and it can prevent any unexpected breakdowns when you need your heating the most. Get that dripping tap fixed. Along with being quite annoying a dripping tap could lead to water stains or small floods. Get it repaired sooner rather than later. Look after your guttering. Blocked gutters mean that water has to find an alternative escape route. If this has to run down an outside wall it could cause damage to the brickwork. Get the guttering checked to ensure there are no cracks or leaks. Clean up your garden. Removing moss and creepers and cutting back tree branches will not only give your garden a spruce up ahead of Spring but it will also allow the brickwork underneath to be inspected for any winter damage. Decorate your home. Now the Christmas decorations have been packed away it can make our homes look dull and in need of a makeover. Why not try some new wallpaper or give your home a lift with a fresh coat of paint? Have your roof checked. Ensuring that your roof is watertight and repairing or replacing any tiles that may be cracked or missing will prevent larger scale damage. If you need the help of a professional trader Age UK Notts can help. The charity runs a directory of local reputable traders and businesses that have all been checked by local Age UK staff. This Business Directory can be accessed online at www.aubdnotts.co.uk or by freephone number 0800 011 4643, where a member of Age UK staff will happily search the directory on your behalf.

Thinking of separating or divorcing but worried about cost?
1. Due to legal aid cuts, how can I afford to get divorced? We offer fixed fees for the majority of divorces so that you know in advance exactly how much it will cost and can budget accordingly. This is because if the Respondent does not reply or defends the divorce then the fixed fees would increase! Dependent upon your income, you may be able to apply for an exemption from the court fees. 2. Do you offer fixed fees? We can offer fixed fees in relation to some other matters such as children and property issues too. These will depend on the circumstances of your particular case. We realise that you need to know how much your case is going to cost and will give detailed estimates whenever possible. We will discuss your costs in detail at every step. 3. Would it be possible for me to pay in instalments or pay as I go? Either of these options are available. Form some people “pay as you go is an attractive idea. You may wish to represent yourself but need advice on specific aspects of your case as it proceeds. We are happy to offer this service. If you wish to instruct us more formally, monthly payments are something we can arrange in many cases. 4. What is mediation? Mediation allows separating couples to try to make decisions and reach agreement about the various aspects of their separation. Our specially trained mediator, Pat Sallis, supports and guides you through this process. Legal aid is still available for this subject to your financial situation. If you do not qualify for legal aid, the sessions are charged for separately. The number of sessions needed will vary from case to case. We offer a free 30 minute consultation in which we can discuss the different options available to you and give some initial advice.

Help With Dementia
Understanding Dementia for you and the extended family or friends.
Do you know someone who has had a diagnosis of dementia? Are you a carer or involved in the care of someone with dementia? Can we help? We are running an A to Z of Dementia series of information sessions starting in February. The sessions begin on Saturday morning the 7th February from 10am to 12noon, and will continue every Saturday for a further 6 weeks finishing on Saturday 21 March. It is specifically for families and friends, not paid carers, and is called Making Sense of Dementia (an information Programme for carers of people with dementia). The ‘Programme’ runs for seven weeks and is just two hours a week. During the two hour sessions, carers learn about the different types of dementia, how dementia affects the brain. Carers will also learn how dementia can affect communication, behaviour and appetite and what to do when the situation becomes difficult. One very positive aspect of the sessions is the chance to meet other carers in the same situation which enables people to share experiences, feel less isolated and
learn a lot from each other. Many friendships are made at these groups. There are usually about ten people but may be more. The February sessions will be run at the RadfordCare Group, an established ‘day-care’ centre for older people. We can also offer respite care for the person with dementia and also try, where possible, to help with transport. The programme is available to carers in Nottingham City and the County. Carers are asked to contribute £2.50 per session. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided and lots of written information to take home. Every effort is made to ensure that the groups are very friendly, relaxed and welcoming. “The carers are asked to let us know what they think of the programme and there have been some very positive comments”. “Saturday mornings won’t be the same without the group,” ‘I have never learnt so much in such a short time’ ‘I wish I had known this five years ago’ ‘This has helped me look after my father much better’ “I feel so much more confident about making decision now – this has been really helpful.

online help
Parents’ concerns about social networking sites popular with children are revealed today, as the NSPCC launches its Share Aware campaign to get families in Nottinghamshire talking about socialising safely online.
An NSPCC panel of more than 500 parents from Mumsnet reviewed 48 of these sites and said all those aimed at adults and teenagers were too easy for children under 13 to sign-up to. On more than 40 per cent of the sites, the panel struggled to locate privacy, reporting and safety information.1 At least three quarters of parents surveyed by the NSPCC found sexual, violent, or other inappropriate content on Sickipedia, Omegle, Deviant Art, and F my Life within half an hour of logging into the sites. Those aimed at younger children, like Club Penguin, Moshi Monsters, Popjam and Bearville, fared better and parents did not find any unsuitable content on them. The NSPCC also asked just under 2,000 children and young people which social networking sites they used.2 Talking to strangers or sexual content were the main concerns mentioned by children. But they also thought the minimum age limit for signing up to many sites should be higher, despite saying they’d used the sites when they were underage. One child who spoke to a ChildLine volunteer counsellor at the charity’s Nottingham base, said: “I’ve always struggled to make friends so I started going online to speak to people. I met one person who I thought I had a lot in common with so we emailed all the time. After a few weeks they suggested we exchange phone numbers because it was easier. At first it was fine, but then things started to change. If I didn’t message back immediately they’d send me nasty messages. I’ve started to dread turning my phone on!” The NSPCC has used the reviews to create a new online guide to help inform parents about the risks of different social networking sites used by children. Sandra McNair, NSPCC Regional Head of Services for Children and Families, said: “Children are taught from an early age that it is good to share but doing so online can be very dangerous. We must all be Share Aware. This Christmas many children will have been given a smart phone, a tablet computer, or a games console. So it’s the perfect opportunity for parents to have that important conversation

with their children about who they are talking to and what they share when they socialise online. “We know that children do take risks online, sometimes without realising it. And we know some parents feel confused by the internet – out of their depth, and out of control. Our Share Aware campaign gives parents straightforward, no-nonsense advice that will help them to untangle the web and feel confident talking to their children about online safety. “Keeping children safe online is the biggest child protection challenge of this generation. Parents have a vital role to play but we want social networking sites to respond to parental concerns about their children’s safety and privacy. The NSPCC will continue to challenge and work with internet companies and the Government to make the internet a safer place for children.” Zena Goldman, from the East Midlands, was part of the NSPCC panel of parents asked to review social networking sites by Mumsnet: “I got involved with the NSPCC Share Aware campaign when Mumsnet got in touch asking me to help review social media apps and sites that are children have access to today. I have a 17 year old son who is constantly attached to his phone or computer or both! The technology that has become available over recent years is overwhelming and it can soon feel like as a parent you're losing control of the situation. Long gone are the days when all communication into the house was through the landline and you knew who was speaking to your children. The NSPCC’s Share Aware campaign is aimed at parents of 8 to 12year-old children and also features two animations to be shown on prime time TV and digital spaces. I Saw Your Willy and Lucy And The Boy are engaging films with a serious message that follow the stories of two children who share too much about themselves online. Both films contain the simple message that although children are taught that it’s good to share, this is not always the case online. People can find out more about the NSPCC campaign at www.nspcc.org.uk/shareaware and join the debate on social media by following #ShareAware. Anyone looking for advice about keeping children safe online, or concerned about the safety and welfare of a child, can contact the NSPCC’s 24-hour helpline on 0808 800 5000 or email help@nspcc.org.uk Children worried about online safety or any other problem can call the free, 24-hour helpline on 0800 1111 or get help online at www.childline.org.uk

breeze promotion FOREVER GIVING This year a number of charities have benefited from phenomenal donations as a result of social media, such as the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness of ALS, or Stephen Sutton’s bucket list to raise donations for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Charities are therefore at the front of many people’s minds and as we start the New Year a good resolution might be to consider how you can help by giving gifts, benefitting those in need and participating in fundraising events.. As well as supporting a charity in their lifetime however, individuals can also choose to support a charity on their death. By including a simple clause in a Will they can leave a gift for those charities and provide much welcomed donations to worthy causes. As well as benefitting the charity, a charitable gift in a Will may have other implications that can benefit family members or other individuals mentioned in the Will. For instance where the assets in an estate just exceed the Inheritance Tax threshold, a carefully worded clause gifting monies or assets to charity can sometimes negate any tax altogether. Even in situations where Inheritance Tax on an estate is inevitably payable, by leaving a 10% share of the estate to charity and again using a carefully worded clause, this can successfully reduce the Inheritance Tax rate from 40% to 36% - which would undoubtedly be very welcomed by beneficiaries. The gift also doesn’t have to just be made to a traditionally named “charity”. Gifts made to churches, schools, research and amateur sports sometimes qualify under the heading of gifts to charities and any such gifts would therefore not be included in the value of the estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. For a further discussion regarding charitable giving in your Will, Inheritance Tax advice or to make a will, please contact Karen Hayward on 0800 158 5316 or visit the Rothera Dowson website.

breezerecipe POTATO-TOPPED BEEF PIE Serves 6 1 sheet ready-rolled shortcrust pastry 1 egg, beaten 3 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 50g butter, melted, for brushing For the filling: 50g butter 2 small onions, finely chopped 1kg beef clod (from the muscly neck area, great for mince) without too much fat, chopped 80g plain flour 250ml beef stock 2 thyme sprigs 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 handful chopped parsley Salt and pepper 1 pinch grated nutmeg First make the filling. Melt the butter in the saucepan. Add the onions and fry over medium heat until they soften. Add the beef and fry, pressing down with a fork until it has browned. Drain off the pan juices, adding them to the stock. Sprinkle the flour over the meat, stir, and continue cooking for another two minutes. Remove the pan fro the heat and gradually add the stock, mixing well. Return the pan to the heat and stir constantly until the mixture boils and thickens. Add the thyme, Worcestershire sauce, parsley, salt and pepper and nutmeg. Cover the pan and leave to simmer over a low heat for 30 minutes. Heat the oven to 240C/Gas Mark 9. Line your pie tin with the shortcrus pastry and prick the base several times with a fork. Cover with a sheet of greaseproof paper and weigh down with baking beans. Bake blind for 20 minutes, then lift out the paper and baking beans and brush the pastr case with beaten egg. Decrease the oven temperature to 190C/Gas 5. Spoon the filling into the pastry case and top with the sliced potatoes. Brush the potato with lots of melted butter, then put the pie into the oven and bake for 50 minutes to one hour. Serve with tomato ketchup.
STEAK TARTARE Serves 4
750g beef fillet tails 1 large bunch parsley, chopped Salt and pepper 65ml Worcestershire sauce 100ml tomato sauce 100g capers, finely chopped 150g shallots, finely chopped 4 egg yolks Tabasco sauce, to serve Cut the meat into matchstickthin strips, then bundle them up, turn them around 180 degrees and cut into little cubes. Start chopping the meat and continue until it eventually forms into a ball on the board.
breezemagazine 26
Mix the meat with some of the parsley, some pepper, Worcestershire sauce and tomato sauce. Spoon it on to serving plates and shape into a mound. The remaining ingredients should be arranged around the meat, and an egg yolk placed in the centre of each serving. This allows everyone to add and mix and play and season - that’s half the fun. If you can’t bear the thought of raw steak, then you can grill each patty to make a hamburger.

breeze appeal The start of the new year is a significant time in all of our lives but for one local organisation, the Canaan Trust, 2015 is a milestone. Celebrating twenty years helping our Local Homeless... It was back in 1995, twenty years ago, that the Trust first came into being. At that time there was a man named Kenny who was sleeping rough in Long Eaton. One day Kenny decided to bed down in an industrial skip behind some shops in the centre of town – it is warm snuggled down among the cardboard and other waste, out of the wind. Unfortunately for Kenny a group of youths saw him bed down and clearly believed it would be fun to see what his reaction might be if they set fire to the skip. Kenny was badly burned. He was taken to the QMC once the fire brigade had discovered him and the fire had been extinguished. Kenny’s plight was bad before he was burnt but now what would become of him? Well, one of the ministers from a local church hearing of his ordeal decided to go and see him in hospital. The minister decided to invite Kenny to come and live with him once he was discharged from hospital to help him. Others of his group also recognised that they were called to ‘live their faith’ not just celebrate it when in church. And so the Trust was born. Originally named the Aspire Trust. The first small property which was rented and became Kenny’s home was on Station Road in Long Eaton. Even to this day, although the property has nothing to do with the Trust any more anyone travelling down Station Road will see a strange shaped corner building with the name Aspire Trust still painted over the door. Working closely with Erewash Borough Council the Trust operates 24 hour a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Their office on Main Street is staffed at all times. No one chooses to be homeless – it is not a life style choice! Too often the convenient stereo-type image of the dosser, alcoholic, drug addict springs to mind as it quickly provides a ready made answer to the problem of homelessness – it is ‘their fault’ ,they choose to live like that. The reality is that anyone can and does become homeless. Lose a job, relationship breakdown, physical or mental health issues can each lead to an individual becoming homeless. And if you do not have an address in our modern society you effectively cease to exist – you cannot register with a doctor, obtain benefits nothing. Individuals can quickly become socially isolated feeling alone and without hope.
breezemagazine 28
The Canaan Trust has helped thousands of individuals who never ever envisaged that their lives would have hit the low of being homeless. As well as caring for and supporting the homelessliving rough in Long Eaton the Trust additionally supports a large number of other individuals who are in need - some might be sofa surfing (sleeping on friends’ sofas, in their own tenancy, or some form of shelter out in the community. For example in an average week the Trust will hand out anything between thirty and fifty food parcels to individuals in need. For some clients we are their official address – this enables them to register with a GP, with a dentist, having an address means that they can apply for benefits. Everyone at the Trust – clients, staff and the Board of Volunteer Trustees fully recognise that it is only able to provide the support it does, help rebuild the lives it does through the kind and generous support of so many organisations, groups, churches and schools across Erewash and Broxtowe. Each year the Trust has to raise in excess of £100,000 to continue to help those in need. The fact that the Trust is still here twenty years on is testament to the goodness of so many caring people who are mindful and willing to care for and support those who, invariably through no direct fault of their own, find themselves homeless and alone. If everyone reading this article was able and willing to donate a single pound then the Trust would be well on its way to meeting its financial commitments in this its twentieth year. If you thought that donating a one pound would help provide someone with a bed today would you give it? Donating your pound could not be easier! Simply take your mobile phone and send the following text message: ABED14 £1 Send the message to telephone number 70070. It is that simple. By sending that message you will immediately donate one pound directly to the Canaan Trust with the pound simply being added to your monthly mobile phone bill or being deducted from your mobile phone credit. Please consider helping - so that we can be there to help them. For further information visit the Trust’s website: www.canaan-trust.co.uk Or look at Canaan Trust on Facebook

winter care... Winter can be a challenging time for us all and plants are not exempt from the vagaries of the weather entirely. Here are some tips to help you keep your garden ready for the spring to come... Trees and Shrubs Any new plantings should ideally be protected from the wind by erecting a shelter around them (we have coverered the stress effects of wind previously). Move your container shrubs into a cold greenhouse, cold frame or you could even use bubble wrap and plant jackets/giant fleece bags to wrap or place your pots in as they will all give protection. Fleece should be used to protect vulnerable plants from severe frost and tree ties and stakes should be checked for loosening after recent heavy winds. Damage can be caused by some of our
breezemagazine 34
garden friends (even though it’s not intentional of course!) so use wire netting to protect outdoor seedbeds, pots and trays from damage by squirrels. Glue bands can be applied around tree trunks to control pests such as the winter moth.
Bulbs Prolong the flowering period of any winter-flowering houseplants by avoiding placing near drBVghts and any dry places such as near fires or radiators. Keep them in good light and in a cool position. To help prevent disease you ought to remove the dead leaves from the foliage of plant and remove any dead flowers on
cyclamen and azaleas to keep them flowering. Daffodils and hyacinths can be force fed to build up bulbs. Prior to bulbs appearing spread mulch over the flower borders and also around shrubs. Bulbs, corms and tubers that are being kept in store should be checked regularly for signs of deterioration or rot. Tomatoes and Peppers Get the growing season going already by starting your tomato and pepper seeds indoors. Most tomatoes and peppers will take about six to eight weeks to reach transplant size so perhaps plant towards the end of January for best results in late March when you can transplant them into pots and growing beds. So keep busy in the garden and, as always - learn and enjoy and a Happy New Year to all our gardening friends!

LONG EATON OPERATIC SOCIETY’S YOUTH GROUP PROUDLY PRESENTS BUGSY MALONE A popular, pint-sized, pin-striped classic leaps off the silver screen and onto the Duchess Theatre stage in Bugsy Malone, a tongue-incheek tribute to the gangster films of the 1920s. Based on the hit 1976 film starring Jodi Foster and featuring an appealing and swinging score and libretto by Paul Williams, Bugsy Malone is good, clean, hilarious fun! Two gangs of children, in a fictitious city comprised completely of children, are in a 1920s rivalry of Al Capone-style standards. Dandy Dan's gang has the upper hand since getting their hands on the "splurge" gun - a weapon that shoots an avalanche of sprayed foam! This puts Fat Sam and his bumbling buffoons in real trouble! Bugsy Malone, a onetime boxer, is thrust, not-so-willingly, into the gangster limelight, when he becomes the last chance Fat Sam's gang has of surviving. All Bugsy really wants to do is spend time with his new love, Blousey, but that just isn't going to come true for our hero. Bugsy Malone is a fantastic choice for our youth group as it is a master class in musical comedy. Just imagine how delightful it is when it's brought to life by a group of extremely talented young people! The show takes place from Thursday 19th to Saturday 21st February 2015, starting at 7.30pm with a matinee performance on Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets are priced £7 and £6 available now from 07864 033663, Ticketsource (www.duchess-theatre.com) or directly from the Duchess Theatre at their regular Saturday coffee mornings.

David said ‘Working for Robert Ellis for sixteen years I have seen many changes along the High Street in these challenging economic times. I believe Long Eaton town centre has much to offer to a wide range of business uses and can return to the vibrant Market Town of old. I have recently overseen the conversion of three retail units in Breaston and was overwhelmed with the response and demand for quality commercial retail premises. The properties are now successfully trading as a Café, Hairdressing Salon and Florist, the block managed by Robert Ellis and shows what can be achieved with a little foresight.’ For further information of commercial properties presently available please visit our Robert Ellis website at www.robertellis.co.uk following the ‘commercial’ link or call Associate Director David Moakes on 0115 922 9919 for a wide range of commercial advice.
