Need somewhere to take the kids over the summer holidays? Here’s a few suggestions...

r e m sum tivities ac 161 – AND STILL GOING STRONG The historic Moorgreen Country Show is preparing for its 161st edition later this year with a two day programme packed with interest and entertainment. Although traditionally a showcase of the area’s rich rural heritage strongly featuring agricultural and horticultural content the Show has always contained a number of contemporary activities. The Show is held on a 40 acre showground at Watnall on the August Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday – August 29th and 30th. “At the core of the programme are the many and varied competitions associated with a country show,” a spokesman told Breeze. “For instance we have over 200 classes for horses and ponies in the showing and ridden sections plus two days of show jumping. The horticultural tent displays not only top quality flower and vegetable entries but also exhibits in floral art and home baking plus children’s craft classes.” Animals from around the World Animals of all shapes and sizes will be in competition from cattle, sheep and goats to guinea pigs, ferrets, poultry, waterfowl and pigeons. A fun dog show is staged on both days incorporating the Moorgreen Sausage Catching Championship and a pet show on Sunday. Country crafts will be demonstrated in the Village Green marquee alongside a fascinating display of Chinese vegetable carving and the chance to have a go at basket weaving. “Add in the classic car parade, steam engines, bloodhounds and a regional food festival and the mix which is Moorgreen Show begins to take shape,” added the spokesman.“We think of the Show as a tradition to treasure. Thanks to a lot of hard work from a lot of volunteers the Show has outlived the Royal Show for instance and thanks to local support the 2010 edition will be as good as ever.” Full information is available from www.moorgreenshow.co.uk or 01773 711767. Advance tickets purchased before 15th August are priced £7.00 Adult admission on the day £9.00. Accompanied children up to 16 Free. Parking Free.

SUMMER SCIENTISTS NEEDED! The University of Nottingham Summer Scientist Week 2010 will run from the 16th to the 20th August. During the week researchers invite children aged 4 to 11 years to visit the University for half a day to take part in fun activities and help with their research. Children will have the chance to take part in a range of research studies into learning and development. The studies involve different tasks and games: from listening to hidden sounds to crack a code, to guessing what people will do next, matching numbers, or playing word snap. When not taking part in the research studies children can enjoy a range of funfair games including face painting and electronic games and parents can find out more about current research at The University of Nottingham. The event is always popular with the children taking part and their parents — many return year after year. Around 300 volunteers are expected to take part this August. The event takes place at the University’s Jubilee Campus on Wollaton Road. The sessions will run from 9.30am until 12.30pm and from 1.00pm until 4.00pm each day. Young Rascals Day Nursery

:)

Young Rascals has built up a very good reputation over the last five years with both past and present parents recommending them to their friends and relatives. They get good feedback from parents with regards to the homework booklets the children are asked to do monthly and the toy sacks that the children are able to take home at the weekend for positive behaviour. Currently Young Rascals is in the process of making their garden more eco friendly with more natural resources and nature areas. They are doing this by finding resources in and around their environment and with the help of parents who use the nursery. So far the children have enjoyed preparing the foods from the garden for meal times such as runner beans, rhubarb, herbs and strawberries. A recent science projects saw the release of butterflies into the garden recently - a much enjoyed experience which helps them to teach the beginnings of caring for the environment. Anyone who watches the news, will have seen reports about the decline of Bees in our country and the effects it can have. So what we can we do to encourage them in to our gardens - here’s a few tips to keeping things buzzing along. Great flowers start with pollination, and for that you need bees. Bees need flowers for sustenance, and flowers need bees for pollination. But it's important the flowers you grow provide the food bees need. Preferred flowers Most double flowers are of little use, because they're too elaborate. Some are bred without male and female parts, while others have so many petals bees can't get to the nectar and pollen to collect it.This is the main reason why single dahlias are popular with many bees, while doubles are usually ignored. The single-flowered rose family, which includes crab apple, hawthorn and potentilla, seem to be irresistible to our buzzing friends, as are the flowers of fennel, angelica and cow parsley, and sedums. Tubular-shaped flowers, such as foxgloves, snapdragons, penstemons and heathers, are also all-favourite feeding places for bees.

bumblebee's life-cycle, from March to September. It's also a good idea to have at least two nectar- or pollen-rich plants in flower at any one time during this period. The nectar feeds the adult bee, while the pollen is collected to feed the young. Of course, the more flowers you have, the more attractive your garden is to bees, so you can never have too many! Try the following to attract more bumblebees into your garden:

g n i n e d r a g

Spring flowers Bluebell, bugle, crab apple, daffodil, flowering cherry and currant, forget-menot (Myosotis), hawthorn, pussy willow, rhododendron, rosemary, viburnum, thrift (Armeria maritima). Early-summer flowers Aquilegia, astilbe, campanula, comfrey, everlasting sweet pea (Lathyrus latifolius), fennel, foxglove, geranium, potentilla, snapdragon, stachys, teasel, thyme, verbascum. Late-summer flowers Angelica, aster, buddleia, cardoon, cornflower (Centaurea), dahlia (singleflowered), delphinium, eryngium, fuchsia, globe thistle (Echinops), heather, ivy, lavender, penstemon, scabious, sedum, Verbena bonariensis.

TOP TIP: Plant Jerusalem artichokes in holes 30cm square, 30cm deep and 30cm apart. Put a good couple of handfuls of manure in each hole and place a tuber on top. Back fill and mark each plant with a cane. Keep an eye out for pests in the greenhouse and treat accordingly

YOUR MONTH AHEAD

ARIES [21st Mar-20th Apr] Having already put a plan into action for reaching certain goals this month, you take each day at a time, succeeding with your accomplishments. Going by your own gut instinct toward the end of the month you go your own way and not others. Sorting out paperwork may become a chore but worth every effort. A chance meeting takes place. TAURUS [21ST Apr-21st May] Not happy with the way you are handling one situation you wait until the time is right to make a move in a positive direction, which is long overdue. Satisfied that something has gone your way, you look forward to completing one project that has been held back in recent weeks. Invitations come your way, which you cannot ignore. GEMINI [22nd May-21st Jun] Time spent with those you love has its rewards. Taking a journey down memory lane brings laughter and music. Bumping into someone you haven’t seen for a while holds the key to information that is welcomed. When things tend to not go your way for a day or so a helping hand is nearby. A special place and fresh air clears away cobwebs.

CANCER [22nd Jun-21st Jul] Giving out the wrong signals to someone you have known for some time causes misunderstandings. Contacting them may be difficult due to concerns on their behalf. Keeping busy gets your head in a spin until you sit down and thinks things through thoroughly. Younger people keep you on your toes with ideas regarding their future. LEO [22ND Jul-21st Aug] When seeing things as they really are you put your best foot forward to making a welcoming move that will affect you and your family’s life in a positive and fulfilling way. A break of some kind puts everything in perspective. With a change of heart, you tread carefully using your skills to organise and get things moving your way. VIRGO [22nd Aug-21st Sep] With energy spurts you get done what needs to be done in and around the home. Keeping up with demands midmonth causes some pressure to build but you soon clear the deck for a busy time ahead. Keeping your thoughts to yourself may be difficult when meeting up with family members. You enjoy one social event with friends.

LIBRA [22nd Sep-21st Oct] Absence makes the heart grow stronger. Whether short or a long break from those you love, meeting up or making up is second to none. Making ends meet is soon resolved when ideas are put into practice. Younger members of the family become demanding, however with one solution resolved you feel more comfortable with life in general. SCORPIO [22nd Oct-21st Nov] Whether people ignore your advice or not you will not change the way you feel about one particular person. You make a journey, which produces good results with a view of making a return visit and perhaps a signing of a contract. Good news arrives out of the blue, putting you in good stead for the future. A change of heart likely 2nd week. SAGITTARIUS [22nd Nov-21st Dec] You enjoy some time spent with those you love and although a slightly calmer month, you begin proceedings, which speeds life up rather quicker than you anticipated. Enjoying the fruits of labour you challenge someone into making their life more secure and enjoyable. Getting rid of the old and bringing in the new cheers you up.

may take longer than anticipated, but when the decision has been made rewards come in slowly but surely. Happy with one or two new improvements around, discussions are held regarding future gains. Making the most of precious time spent with family, plans are made for further meetings. AQUARIUS [22nd Jan-21st Feb] More confident and self-assured you tackle any minor obstacle with gust and enthusiasm. Whether your feeling stronger physically or mentally or both you achieve more than you thought possible during this month. Younger members of the family keep you on your toes with plenty of running around to do for yourself and others. PISCES [22nd Feb-20th Mar] One minute you’re relaxed and all goes well and the next everything seems chaotic for one day. That is, until you realise how it’s happened and put a stop to it. Pleased with some news, you pass this on to others. Keeping check with dates on documents may take time but could remind you to renew something important. Keep keys safe.

CAPRICORN [22nd Dec-21st Jan] Having to make one important decision

If you have a new business and would like to be featured call our team on 0115 967 8663 Born and bred in Robin Hood country it’s good to be home! exclaims Marion Mortimer. “Home life and business commitments ranging from the Isle of Wight to Scotland brought amazing opportunities that otherwise may not have been possible. The abiding theme has been the care of vulnerable people in the community so a rich tapestry of experience involving new born, mentally ill and the growing number of elderly patients has been invaluable”. Arriving first in Stapleford, at the age of five, early education began at Albany School, followed by Arthur Mee, Long Eaton Business College, Institute of Languages and Institute of Celtic Studies. Creating her own Nursing Agency in 1992, the business grew by demand and reputation, working with 45 members of staff alongside Social Services, Mental Health, Marie Curie and Macmillan nurses. During this time it was an honour and privilege for Marion to receive the ‘Search for Service’ Award from Rotary Club in Helensburgh. “I believe that life is a book of many chapters, where absolutely nothing is wasted. Paths we cross, people we meet, work we undertake and challenges we face make us the individuals we become. Therefore, when circumstances dictate, it is necessary to change course. For me, this was the case following a shoulder injury which meant I could no longer lift patients and yet I still had not fulfilled my ambition to continue caring for others. A variation on the theme developed when I went back to school to study chiropody. “Having dusted off the marbles, studies became engrossing and quickly developed an ever increasing thirst for knowledge. The more I discovered, the more I realised there was to know about this fascinating science. Having graduated from the institute, I launched my business and was fortunate in quickly establishing a burgeoning patient list. Now having come full circle, I am pleased to introduce my services at the surgery in Stapleford. All patients are treated as the individuals they are and together, we plan a course of action in tackling all kinds of problems. Some of the conditions we encounter are corns, callus, bunions, fungal nail infections and those very troublesome verrucae. Where verrucae are concerned cryosurgery is proving very popular, especially with athletes and the sporting fraternity as it doesn’t interfere with training activities. Whatever the problem, consultations are free and our patients may expect full care and attention at all times”. Call Marion Mortimer, your local Foot Health Practioner now to make an appointment. Limited parking is available for those less ambulant. 113a Nottingham Road, Stapleford NG9 8AT Tel: 0115 939 3662 or 07876 445082

e c n a l g a t a Cutting Edge Mowers is a family business dedicated to quality servicing and restoration of lawn mowers, garden machinery and DIY tools. They aim to get your mower working as well as economically possible so your garden looks its best. Upping your green credentials by regular servicing postpones mower replacement and saves energy in all senses! Being able to rely on your mower without having to struggle to start it and then finding afterwards that the results are poor makes servicing worthwhile. Is the machine worth repairing? You get an honest answer, because they do not sell new machines and know where to get replacement parts for older machines. Restoration of often better built British lawnmowers being their speciality. Returning customers receive a loyalty discount on servicing, and there is an emergency mowing service if your lawn has grown out of hand. Sharpening of tools is a special skill. Being a cut above other servicing companies, they give cylinder mower blades a ground scissor edge to prolong sharpness and give your lawn a great finish!
