The idea came when Louise and Rachel reached a crossroad in their lives. At Christmas Rachel’s mum passed away suddenly causing Rachel to look at life differently. Louise was facing redundancy and looking for a new opportunity. From these events Frenchy’s was born.

“French was Rachel’s mum’s maiden name we both found it fitting to name our business as a tribute to Rachel mum”.

So what’s on the menu? ICE CREAM!!! They have 15 varieties of speciality Ice Cream; from bubblegum to raspberry pavlova there is a favourite flavour for all. They also offer delicious Ice Cream sundaes; their favourite is raspberry and white chocolate.

On Saturday, May 21, Kevin Sharpe, founder of ZCW, set off from John O’Groats in his electric blue Tesla Roadster along with EV expert David Peilow, both taking turns at the wheel.

This was the first end-to-end trip of the UK in a production electric car. Completed in a similar time to that of a petrol vehicle, except their journey was completed with zero emissions. The drivers reached Lands End on Sunday, with stops to charge up using a combination of Tesla High-Powered Chargers and Medium-Power Chargers donated by ZCW along the way. This historic drive combined the Electric Tesla Roadster’s long range with the current National charging station infrastructure. The total 894-mile feat is estimated to have used no more than £20 worth of electricity.

Electric vehicle owners can now enjoy the benefits of their cars as they tour Great Britain, and conveniently recharge while having a meal, using leisure facilities, or indulging in an overnight stay. Tesla’s High Power Chargers (HPC) delivers 70 amps of electricity, fully charging an empty battery in less than three hours, and “topping off” a partially charged battery in a fraction of that time. An evening of fun and fellowship was had by the Inner Wheel Club of Church Wilne. Breeze catches up with their latest events...

Several Members, Rotarians Husbands, Partners visited the Bakewell Pudding Shop in Bakewell to bake puddings.

“There was so much laughter that some of us over filled our puddings. Whilst waiting for these to bake we had a lovely meal. Winner of the best shaped pudding was Graham Walker who was presented with a bottle of wine and a tea towel”.

The May meeting was an entertaining night with Jane Ryan of ‘Hat Station’. Many of us tried them on which suited some but not everyone!

In June they celebrated their big fund raiser night in conjunction with Rotary. ‘The Last Night of the Proms’ was held at Sawley Community Hall, with a ploughmans supper. A great night was had by all and after all the singing and flag waving most were left hoarse!

Their Charter Evening was held in June at The Round House in Derby. A fantastic venue for President Pauline’s guests – a most enjoyable evening ending with a disco.

Remember the good old 'mincing' machine which clamped to the work topto produce mince meat? Forget 'Meals in Minutes' back in the day it would havetaken hours to produce a humble shepherd's pie!

Come and discover more in ourRetro Kitchen. Travel even further back in time and discover 'Food Through theAges' with fascinating facts and a wonderful display of fare from as far back as Mediaeval England.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a national charity and centre of excellence in training hearing dogs to alert deaf people to everyday household sounds and danger signals in the home, work place and in public buildings.

Hearing Dogs was launched at the world famous Crufts dog show in 1982. Since then they have created over 1,600 lifechanging partnerships between deaf people and hearing dogs in the UK. There are currently over 750 working partnerships in the country.

The Charity trains hearing dogs to alert deaf people to important household sounds and danger signals such as the alarm clock, doorbell, telephone and smoke alarm - providing independence, confidence and security, as well as valuable companionship.

Hearing dogs alert their deaf recipients to household sounds by touching them with a paw or nudging with a nose to gain attention. The recipient then asks the dog 'what is it?' by voice and/or hand command and then the hearing dog leads the recipient to the source of the sound. For danger signals such as the smoke alarm, the hearing dog will alert the recipient in the same way, but when asked 'what is it?' the dog will lie down to indicate danger.

The types of breeds they train to become hearing dogs are typically Labradors, Retrievers, Spaniels, Poodles (and crosses thereof ) along with some smaller breeds such as Cavaliers.

With its huge leaves, Paulownia tormentosa will certainly add an interest point to your garden. You must cut this plant down virtually to ground level every spring to ensure the largest leaves as well as to keep it in check.

Looking to spice up your borders? Go on! - with this exotic bloom, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer'. Vibrant and almost sizzling red flowers grow on arching spikes above lengths of mid-green lush leaf. Needs a fertile, moist well-drained soil. It really does work very well from midsummer onwards adding a welcome intensity of colour.

Reinvigorate your borders!

As your borders start to become a little tired, pop in some vertical plants to add impact - they use the minimum floor space.

Grasses start to reach their best around late Summer: Miscanthus, Stipa Gigantea, Calamagrostis and Panicums work beautifully with many perennials.

Eupatorium purpureum has huge purple-pink puffs of flower reaching up nearly two metres! Superb for creating impact in borders. Eupatoriums are butterfly attractors and also look great if left to stand through the winter months.

Verbascums are the ‘fireworks’ of any grass type border and have tall spikes which rise above a silvery coloured foliage. - requiring well-drained soil to thrive, and should self-seed.

Rising well above two metres high producing an enormous spike of a yellow flower, Verbascum Olympicum is the largest of the species. Other spires to choose from include lupins, hollyhocks (Alcea rosea ‘Nigra' flowers a sumptuous deep blackcurrant. Red-hot pokers actually come into their own at this time of year, and are a real eye-catcher. These glow like embers when mixed with tall grasses, and is even more visually arresting when seen as a colour contrast with orange pokers sizzling when mixed with purple drifts of Verbena Bonariensis.

Summer sees yellow, orange and red Daylilies create a colourful climax in any border - there are thousands of varieties.

The South African perennial, Agapanthus produces huge blue blooms now and would be highly suited being centre-stage in a metal container in your favourite spot in the garden.

Phase your plants So there’s no reason to stop enjoying planting your garden for even more colour as the summer progress - half the pleasure is in seeing how you can ‘ring the changes’ virtually each month as one species takes over from another and keeps your garden alive to the dance of the Sun. Meet the man that can Roger Watson. “Many years ago at school, the careers officer assessed me and said ‘It is clear that you don’t want to work in an office’. So for the next thirty years that’s what I did!

Then the time came to make a decision: Do I continue the treadmill, or do I do what I really enjoy?

I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands, and I’ve always done my own jobs, whether it’s decorating, gardening, plumbing or building. There is nothing I won’t have a go at, and I love a challenge.

Meeting wonderful new people is a bonus! Such a change from working with numbers in an office.

Born in Kent, I came north from London with my wife and family, and love the better personal quality of life I have.

In my spare time I run the award winning Lace Market Youth Theatre, giving young people aged 11 – 18 a chance to be involved in theatre, performing to the public and improving their confidence and self esteem.

I’ve always got involved, whether it’s playing the organ in church, to helping with the beavers, cubs and scouts, to doing the accounts for the junior school PTA. I’ve also run the junior cricket section at Bramcote Cricket Club, and I ran my own outdoor and indoor cricket teams.

I’m not an observer, I get involved. I love challenges, and as far as I’m concerned there is no such thing as a problem, only solutions that haven’t been found yet.

“From an early age I have had an interest in the outdoors!

When I left Friesland School I started an apprenticeship studying sports turf at a local golf club. I developed interest in tree work when working there.

Unfortunately I was made redundant but this gave me a new lease of life. I applied for and was offered a job with a well known tree company in Derby. Going to Brooksby College and learning on the job attending various college courses I was adding more skills to my belt!

Having been in the industry for five years and family and friends asking me to do tree work this gave me ambition to set up my own business. Six months ago Maple Tree Care was formed. This was a big decision but following various conversations with my parents I decided now was the time to make the move. I must say without the financial support of my parents this could not have happened. My parents say I was destined to work with trees having found me climbing them at a very early age.

Some customers have commented I am young but I am pleased to say they are more than surprised when I have completed the task set for me. My team and I believe in 110% customer feed back. Ocean Counselling is running a ten week introduction to counselling Skills in September! This is a new counselling and training organisation based in Beeston.

It is run by Mandy Scott and Caroline Stancer, both qualified and experienced Counsellors, Trainers and Supervisors.

“We both have over ten years’ experience of working with a variety of different clients, and five years’ experience of training, which includes training counsellors right through from introductory to diploma level”.

Finding a counsellor or beginning counselling training can feel like a daunting prospect and they hope by introducing themselves, they can help to make this a little easier.

“We feel passionate about providing a supportive and nurturing environment and believe strongly that if people are offered focussed and non-judgemental attention then they can begin to grow and flourish.

Despite one of the worst winters on record, they are still confident that they will put on a splendid show.

WOLLATON WI Dressed in their posh flocks and hats, the ladies of Wollaton WI enjoyed their 21st birthday in style with 'Ascot Race Night at Wollaton WI'. With the community centre transformed into Royal Ascot, the ladies were given £5000 (courtesy of the Bank of Wollaton WI, St Leonard's Branch) in which to spend, spend, spend, with the person who made the most money on the evening receiving a prize.

Owners of winning horses were invited into the Winners Enclosure to receive their rosettes and prizes. Four of the original members, Val Davis, Maureen Dodd, Mary Beardsley and Marjorie Scarborough were asked to cut the birthday cake. All in all, a fabulous evening of fun and friendship.

Also on the evening we chose our charity for the coming year, Parkinson's UK. At our next meeting on 13th July the speaker will be Claire Lyons who will talk about "Women in Camouflage".

Wollaton WI meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm at St Leonard's Community Centre.

We have a varied programme of speakers, trips, clubs and fundraising and new members are always welcome. Occasional visitors may attend at a charge of £2.
