Bramcote’s very own Nordic Walking Group, the Nordic Ninjas took on the British Nordic Walking Challenge for the second time at Wollaton Park. The group is made up of young walkers, some with learning disabilities, who trained hard for the 5K challenge, after completing the challenge for the first time last year. BBC Presenter Clare Balding visited the group last year for her BBC Radio 4 show, Ramblings. The Nordic Ninjas was set up by Broxtowe Borough Council’s Sport Development Team, Broxtowe Sport, in partnership with British Nordic Walking in 2013 and they meet every Saturday at 2.00pm at Bramcote Leisure Centre. Claire Swain, from Stapleford who has a learning disability completed the challenge in 48 minutes and 55 seconds. Claire beat her time from last year by 10 minutes, despite still suffering from a chest infection. Claire also made it into the team for the Midlands Nordic Walking Club. She said: “I really enjoyed the day, this was my second 5km challenge at Wollaton park. I did one last year and I didn't mind if I didn't beat last year’s record just the taking part that was important. When I set off I didn't realise how fast walker I was and when I got to the finish line and swiped off and went to find out the time I got, I then realised that I beat last year’s record and had to tell the rest of the team the good news.” One of the fastest people on day was 81 year old Jonathan Silvey from Chilwell. Jonathan, who attends a number of Nordic walking sessions in and around Broxtowe completed the challenge in 45 minutes and 9 seconds. He said; “I've been Nordic walking for 6 months. At the age of 81, it seemed one of the best ways to keep fit. When the Nordic Walking Challenge came up, I decided to have a go. It wasn't a race but I wanted to do better than I had on my practice walks. I was delighted to finish in 45 minutes when my target was 50 minutes.” Nordic walking is a walking activity using specially designed poles that provide a whole body workout. Nordic walking is an activity that can be tailored to suit the needs of individuals of all abilities and disabilities. Nordic walking is a walking activity using two poles and a special technique. Nordic walking can strengthen and tone both the lower and upper body and can burn up to 46% more calories compared to ordinary walking. For more information please contact Broxtowe Sport on 0115 917 3572, email sport@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/sport Alternatively for more information about the Nordic Ninja’s and the British Nordic Walking Challenge please contact Catherine Hughes on 07940 575 758 or email catherine@britishnordicwalking.org.uk

New Mum’s Race to a Healthier Life New mum of two, Nic, has already lost nearly three stones and is just one stone away from target just five months after the birth of her second child and is determined to run a half marathon to raise money for Cancer Research later this year. Nic joined Slimming World five years ago and lost four stone to become a target member. “I still attended my group on a Tuesday evening, even though I had achieved my target. Joanne, the consultant, supported me to keep at target and I loved sharing recipe ideas with other members and seeing them achieving their weight loss goals too.” Following the births of her two children, Nic is more determined than ever to get back to her dream weight and has decided, once again, that Slimming world is the way to do it. “I know I can do it, because I’ve done it before... twice! I want to be a healthy role model for my children as they grow up.” The busy mum of two says she could never stick to a diet that didn’t allow a curry on a Friday night. “Food optimising is so easy. It just fits perfectly into family life. I’m able to cook healthy versions of all our favourite meals and we can even have our Indian fake-away on a Friday night.” She uses her group to exchange recipe ideas and come up with new ways to enjoy food. So what is the secret to success? Embracing the group! “I was so nervous when I first walked into group all those years ago. I’d battled with my weight for ten years and yoyo’d between sizes 16-14. I was so unhappy, I looked at a photo of myself and I’d become unrecognisable. I knew I needed to do
something but I was so scared.” But she needn’t have worried. “The group was so friendly and welcoming! No one judged me and I felt like everyone was there to help. Member’s weights are kept completely confidential and no one is humiliated, ever!” Nic is now more than half way back to target after putting on 4 stone throughout her pregnancy. She was unable to attend group due to work commitments and admits she struggled to stay on plan without her usual support. “Being pregnant second time round was hard. I felt ill all the time, plus I had to run around after a toddler. I didn’t have the energy to cook and we relied on convenience food that we could just stick in the oven. I felt so unhealthy and unfit, I couldn’t wait to get back to group. I knew they would support me as a new mum.” But the determined thirty five year old is ready to get back into those jeans. “I keep looking at my wardrobe full of beautiful clothes that I never dreamed I’d ever be able to wear and I’m determined more than ever to fit back into them.” But it isn’t just her clothes motivating her this time round. Nic wants to be a good role model to her two children and be able to keep up with them as they grow. She has entered the Robin Hood Half Marathon and is hoping to raise money for a charity close to her heart. “Just before Christmas, my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Running is the perfect way to mix keeping fit and raising money for Cancer Research UK. I’m doing the Race for Life 10k at Nottingham embankment and two half marathons to try and raise as much as I can.”

Nic has so much faith in the Slimming World plan that she is embarking on a new career and becoming a Slimming World Consultant. “Slimming World has changed my life, I look back on those photos and I can’t believe that unhappy face is me. Back then I’d never have had the confidence to run in public, where actual real live people could see me.” Nic’s group starts at St Barnabas Church, on Thursday 16th June in Chilwell. For more information contact her on 07539086085. Nic’s top tips:
1. Stay to group, there is always some inspiration to be found, or a new way to improve a recipe. 2. Don’t give up, everyone has wobbles. Some weeks are harder than others, but with the support of the group there is nothing that can’t be overcome. 3 Believe in yourself. I never dreamed I’d ever be under eleven stone, never mind under ten. But I did it twice before and I’m more than half way there again.

A Walking Football team from Bramcote represented Nottingham Forest in the final of the National Walking Football Championships, after winning the East Midlands qualifying event. The Bramcote Silver Badgers, who play regularly at Chilwell Olympia Sports Centre, where set up by Broxtowe Borough Council’s Sport Development Team, Broxtowe Sport, in 2012 as part of the first Walking Football sessions. The club joined over 70 teams in five regions of the country taking part in the qualifiers and went on to make it to the National Finales at St. George’s Park, the Headquarters of the England National Team. The club played a fantastic final match against Blackpool but were sadly beaten on penalties. Terry Astill, one of the original members and organisers said: “I have been taking part in walking football for nearly four years and I have certainly felt a benefit in my fitness levels and general wellbeing. I have also made many new friends and the social side of the club cannot be under estimated.” The club now have around 30 regularly members who take advantage of the Council’s weekly Walking Football Sessions at Chilwell Olympia every Wednesday between 2.00pm and 3.00pm. Anyone who is interested should come along and have a go. Walking Football is a specially modified version of the beautiful game which uses the same rules as five-a-side football, except participants are not allowed to run, only walk. The sessions are a great way for older people to keep fit, whether they are still active or returning to exercise, whilst socialising with other local people. Dog owners, are you lungworm aware? Following the recent death of a dog in Nottingham caused by lungworm infestation, Churchcroft Vets are continuing their push to make sure all dog owners are well informed about this serious problem. Lungworm has been spreading across the U.K. for many years now and there have been two cases seen at Churchcroft Vets in Chilwell. Fortunately both these cases were quickly diagnosed an successfully treated. However, some cases can develop overwhelming disease very rapidly and die before they can be treated. Unlike other worms, the most common dog wormers are NOT effective in preventing lungworm but there are some flea controls and wormers which are effective when used frequently. It is advisable for all dogs to have some protection. Churchcroft head vet George says “Lungworm disease in dogs can present in a whole variety of ways. Sometimes dogs cough or sometimes they bleed because the lungworm causes clotting failure. Treating is complicated and prevention is definitely the way forward. Staffies and Staffie crossbreeds are at particularly high risk. CHURCHCROFT VETS OFFER FREE PARASITE CONSULTATIONS TO ALL DOG OWNERS AND DURING JULY AND AUGUST ALSO HAVE 10% OFF ALL LUNGWORM TREATMENTS. Call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and make sure your dog is protected.

british summer!
Whilst the sun has not been in abundance we still need to care for our flowering and other plants to ensure they are ready to bloom to their fullest later in the season. Keeping your plants from going thirsty is all the more important when in pots or containers - even in the weather we have in a British summer! Water either early in the morning or evening to ensure that the plants receive as much of the water as possible without it evaporating. Don’t stress your plants by giving up and not watering them on the drier days - we usually do have sunshine, often later in the season as well so you do want your flowering plants to be ready! Elsewhere in the garden you should look at your perennials and cut back half of all that have flowered, such as lupins and delphiniums. This should persuade more flowers to grow later on in the season, helping to keep the blooms coming!
breezemagazine 24
Weed and deadhead your existing flowers regularly making sure that you check for any pests. All faded heads on the annuals should also be removed. Aphids From time to time, aphids may attack almost any garden plant. The basic nature of mild household detergents makes them perfect for getting rid of mild to moderate aphid infestations. Dilute a few tablespoons of dish soap in a small bucket of lukewarm water and use a spray bottle to apply the mixture to plants where aphids have taken hold. Upon contact, the soap will dissolve the waxy protective coating from aphids’ bodies, dehydrating and eventually killing the insects without harming the plant. Also treat the undersides of leaves where aphid eggs and larvae may be hiding! Don’t over-feed plants. Too much fertiliser will lead to lots of soft, sappy growth which will encourage aphid attacks. Wet weather advice for planting Roots, as well as absorbing water and nutrients, also breathe so they must have oxygen. Because soil is full of tiny gaps which allow oxygen to percolate down from the air above it is also prone to ‘flooding’ inside these ‘pores’.
If filled with water the roots in such soil cannot breathe, causing the whole thing to rot. This is what you see when a plant has died and turns black. Two solutions here: drainage: if using pots then good amounts of grit sand mixed in with the compost can help plants that are susceptible to waterlogging. Likewise, in the ground: adding copious amounts of grit sand to help create good drainage can help especially in less well sun-lit parts of the garden. Another solution is the type of plants you grow. Reed-like grasses, some irises, such as the Japanese Iris ensata, the kingcups (caltha species) and Euphorbia palustris can do well as they are used to more wet conditions in nature. Take this into account for next summer and you can avoid some of these issues, at least in parts of your little patch. Keep learning with us and as always.... ....Enjoy!

When you speak the truth you can always expect fireworks because not everyone likes to be put on the spot. The new, confident, happier you is causing someone to feel uncomfortable, probably because they are losing their grip over your emotions. A new regime is about to commence that includes a change of direction in just about every area of your life. Taurus This is not a time to think about your own needs. You need to consider other people's feelings and understand their situation. You know you can push someone's buttons too hard sometimes so that they really get angry and irritated about the most petty, insignificant things. Gemini If you are hell bent on picking a fight with someone, you may jeopardise your chances of happiness or ever hearing those wedding bells ring out. Give your loved ones a bit of time and space, after all, everyone seems to be stressed out about the most ridiculous of matters. Ensure credit card bills are paid on time.

Cancer With a little bit of patience and forward planning, important issues can be resolved. Someone very close to you needs your assistance and support. Do not waste time being in awe of people who appear wealthier and more successful than you because behind closed doors, the truth can often be very different. Leo A certain matter may still be up in the air putting you in a very difficult position. Its important to be tactful when dealing with someone who is experiencing a deeply sensitive time because you never know what lies beneath the surface. Slow your speed and stop tearing around like a lunatic. By forward planning and careful preparation you are more likely to complete jobs with a happy result than going at it slap dash. Virgo You need to be open minded about a new situation otherwise disagreements and arguments are likely. You are used to being the boss in most relationships but someone new on the scene had different ideas and could be a force to be reckoned with. Snap decisions regarding money put you on edge, especially if your gut feelings are telling you to tread cautiously. Trust your reasoning and refuse to be bullied.
Libra You are full of great ideas, but will you put your money where your mouth is? Someone isn’t taking you very seriously and this could spark off a major row. Your day to day routine is about to change, whether it involves friends, family or romance. Scorpio No matter how much you may be forced to depend on others for various things, you are still master of your own fate and will only do exactly what you want to do. This is no time for regret. What has taken place in the past belongs right there, in the past. Sagittarius Try to take a little extra care with finances. Over spending on trivia or being over generous with the wrong people will force you to do a bit more juggling than you are used to. If you are experiencing difficulties in a personal relationship, follow your instincts and get to the bottom of what is really going on behind the scenes. Capricorn The choices you make now regarding a certain relationship will determine in which direction you will be forced to travel in next. Its important that you are honest with yourself about what you want and need out of life in order to be happy. Bide your time before making any rash decisions affecting finances and material stability.

Its time to get out of that rut and do something constructive about making a few positive changes for the better. A fresh approach is all that is needed for you to feel happier, more fulfilled and relaxed about the future. Some good fortune regarding your financial prospects is on its way and if you are single and looking for excitement, someone new will arrive. Pisces Your intuitive powers are peaking and you will be spotting new clues regarding a certain situation more frequently. You may be ready for what is about to happen, but some fresh information may succeed in 'blowing you away'. A slow burning friendship is growing more important.
