JULY 2017 Sunday 9th - No Sunday walk due to coach trip to Llandudno.
get walking keep walking with the Long Eaton Rambling Club, By John Aram
Walking has been described by experts as the perfect form of physical activity. The Long Eaton Rambling Club has a full and varied programme of walks throughout the year, with walks arranged every weekend, in the week and evenings during the lighter nights. The club also enjoys days out weekends away and holidays. With rising costs there’s no need to spend a fortune on a day out when going on a walk comes at very little to no cost at all. If you own a flask, sandwich box warm clothing and good footwear you have all the equipment you need to give you many years of good walking. More and more people every year are taking up walking; exploring the countryside on foot is becoming Britain’s number one outdoor recreation. The Long Eaton Rambling Club walks meet at the Town Hall car park to car share to keep travelling costs to a minimum, unlike other walking clubs where you have to make your way to the start of a walk. If you don’t own a car you can still enjoy the benefits of a pleasant walk in the countryside. Walking is an enjoyable pastime, beautiful scenery, great fun and loads of friendly natter. So come and join The Long Eaton Rambling Club on one of the forthcoming walks. New members always welcome.

Slimming World groups charity success... Local slimmers donate thousands of pounds worth of clothes to Cancer Research UK Generous slimmers from Beeston and surrounding areas have been donating the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw in support of Cancer Research UK. The local Slimming World groups have collected over 250 bags of the clothes, shoes and accessories from members who slimmed out of their old wardrobes and feel confident they’ll never need their ‘before’ clothes again. With each bag worth around £25 to the charity, slimmers have raised around £6,250 for the charity. The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw aims to increase awareness of how keeping a healthy weight helps reduce the risk of developing some types of cancer. The event has been supported by the singer and TV presenter, Peter Andre, who is a joint ambassador for the campaign and founder of his own Cancer Research UK fund after sadly losing his brother to cancer. Last year, slimmers across the UK raised £2.1 million through donations and this year it’s hoped the event will smash that target and raise £3 million for Cancer Research UK. Consultants who run the local weekly groups are proud of their members’ fundraising efforts. One consultant says: “The members never fail to amaze me with their weight loss results week after week
and it has been great to see so many bags of clothes donated through The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw. “This year’s Clothes Throw has been a fantastic success, and I can’t believe just how many bags our members, their friends and families have managed to collect. Groups are always buzzing and when we collected the bags up and saw what a phenomenal amount there were altogether, and we realised what a difference we could make, the atmosphere was just electric.“ “Lots of people don’t know that maintaining a healthy weight helps reduce the risk of developing some types of cancer. ‘UNSEEN’ DAVID BOWIE EXHIBITION TOUR TO VISIT TO NOTTINGHAM
A UK exhibition tour of many ‘never before seen’ photographs of David Bowie has been extended to include a visit to Nottingham this summer. After a sell out 2016 tour, Off Beat Lounge, in conjunction with David Bowie’s official photographer, Denis O’Regan have added an extra nine locations to their 2017 UK tour of Mini dealerships, exhibiting more than forty photographs, many of which have never been seen by the public before, documenting Denis’ time touring the world with David Bowie. The tour will now visit the Sytner MINI showroom on Lenton Lane, Nottingham for one night only on the evening of Friday 14th July 2017. As well as being official photographer to Bowie during the 1983 ‘Serious Moonlight’ Tour, the 1987 Glass Spider Tour and the 1990 Sound and Vision Tour, Denis O’ Regan was also the photographer at events such as The Concert for Diana and Live Aid. Through the 1980s and 1990s, Denis toured the world as official photographer to the Rolling Stones, Queen, Duran Duran, Pink Floyd, Spandau Ballet, Thin Lizzy, Neil Diamond and the Bee Gees. Denis said ‘I’m really looking forward to coming to Nottingham for this exhibition, which pulls together a decade of travelling around the world with David. It’s been a real trip down memory lane for me, of time I spent with a great, great friend, both on stage and during our down time between concerts.’ Off Beat Lounge, specialise in the publication and exhibition of limited edition, fine art rock photography. This is their second UK tour, following on from the overwhelming success of their 2015 Bruce Springsteen exhibition tour, which saw fans travelling from across Europe to attend. The collaboration between Denis O’Regan and Off Beat Lounge will mean that fans can view this unique and personal photographic collection at one night exhibition events, giving them the chance to see rare, intimate moments from back stage, relaxing between gigs and on stage. Denis will also be in attendance, giving some ticket holders a chance to attend a meet and greet ‘question and answer’ session, as Denis chats about his life on the road with one of the world’s biggest rock icons. Tickets to attend the ‘David and I..’ events are strictly limited and available via Ticketweb.

A new lover could soon appear on the horizon that is far more in tune with your needs and desires than anyone you have previously been involved with. You may be tempted to neglect a task or chore that is really your responsibility. Perhaps you cant be bothered and would rather chill out in front of the TV instead.
CancerYou insist that you are a private person yet you have not been as discreet as you ought. Gossip and speculation is rife because you have not kept your lips sealed. A battle of wills will take place between you and a partner. Demanding relatives will expect you to drop everything and spend more time with them but you prefer to see them in small doses. A change of direction is on the horizon regarding your career. What once seemed important is no longer taking precedence.
Taurus You will learn something to your benefit over the next few days. Events at work could spiral out of control with emotions running over the top. However, you will find a ridiculous way of manipulating things to work your way giving you a greater advantage than your opponents. An ex partner still refuses to let go of the past. By now will be feel bored with their neediness and feel compelled to tell he or she exactly what you think.
A long term friendship could hit the rocks. If you refuse to communicate sensibly and listen to the other person's point of view you could lose a valuable friendship. At work you will say just the right thing and it could result in a promotion or recognition of some kind. Pay attention to your health, especially if you have been overdoing things and not getting enough rest. A wonderful omen of success pointing towards your love life will put you on cloud nine.
Looks as though you may 'call it a day' regarding a personal relationship, Probably because you realise that you are wasting your time and better off spending time with people you appreciate your kindness rather than taking your friendship for granted. Don’t drive a wedge between yourself and a close friend because he or she is not telling you what you want to hear. A new romances beckons with someone you find attractive but who plays mind games.
A battle of wits between yourself and someone you respect could end up in a cat fight. A triangle of love may commence if you don’t take control of a situation and put your foot down once and for all. Someone you know well may ask you for financial help but not in a position to repay you straight away. Important meetings at work will be long, drawn out and frustrating. You know exactly where you would rather be...and who with.
You are making a big deal out of things that are not important. Why are you giving someone credit where it is not due? Perhaps you are protesting too much about your feelings for a lover in an effort to convince your self that he or she is the right person for you? Interestingly, no one else is listening any more. Someone you know well will annoy you immensely. Perhaps they are asking too much of you. You are not good at small talk and prefer to stick to the facts. As always you will speak your mind, refusing to humour anyone who prefers to remain deluded. Old photographs and childhood memories could evoke emotions that you find difficult to deal with. You may feel vulnerable because there is no one else left to share them with or who understands how you feel. You are intent on making the future a happier place to be in even if it means going it alone and saying goodbye to a way of life that has not brought you any contentment. A chance meeting with someone new could lead to a short romantic fling, or in some cases, an affair that will prove emotional and full of ups and downs. If you are currently communicating with someone on the internet, a meeting arranged soon may well result in you both finding true happiness and long lasting love.
Aquarius Just about everyone around you either isn’t well in themselves nor feeling too happy. Although you worry about loved ones, all you can do is be there at the end of a telephone. You may experience clash between you and a neighbour, or someone you employ to do a job of work could skimp on essentials yet charge you full price. Be alert at all times and assert your authority. Pisces A point of no return has already been and gone between you and either a lover or close friend. Play the patience game because you are about to learn more and will realise that you have been taken for a fool in the past, but all this is now about to change. Family matters will reach a head with you in the driving seat revealing previously unspoken truths. A secret admire may choose to make him or herself known to you.

HAPPY PUPPIES – Churchcroft Vets offer FREE puppy socialisation classes
Puppies undergo a sensitive period of development between three and sixteen weeks old. During this time puppies are particularly good at learning how to communicate with other dogs (people and cats). This allows them to understand what other dogs are thinking which helps to avoid conflict with unknown dogs in the park. Churchcroft Vets are passionate about the importance of puppy socialisation and offer a FREE four week class for all their puppies. Head vet George says “ watching the puppies going through the course is really rewarding we see the bold and bouncy pups learn how to play with greater care for others and the more nervous growing in confidence”. Churchcroft have a range of packages to help you offer your puppy the best start in life. To discuss these puppy parties or your puppy’s needs simply call the Churchcroft team on 0115 922 4855.
into the woods jr Following their sell-out performances of Annie Jr in February 2017, the LEOS Youth Group are proud to be presenting ‘Into the Woods’ Jr from 13th to 15th July 2017. The story revolves around a Baker and his wife who are cursed never to have children, an uncertain Cinderella, a blood-thirsty Little Red Riding Hood, a Prince Charming with a roving eye, and a Witch who likes to rap. All these characters are interwoven in this very different fairy-tale. The scene is set in a make-believe forest where spells are overturned and wishes come true. However, in the shadows of the trees something magical and strange is happening but, for those who dare to enter the forest, it may not be what it seems and can be very scary. Quite a fairy-tale, you might think, but what begins as a lively mischievous fantasy makes you wonder if these stories could have a more sinister meaning behind them. Please come and see for yourselves! This is an enchanting musical masterpiece, filled to the brim with a feast of fabled characters. It is a challenge for our Youth Group but one they are looking forward to undertaking and are excited to be presenting this show at the Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton. Tickets are on sale now priced £8 & £7 (concessions Saturday Matinee only) and are available from: • www.duchess-theatre.com booking fee applies (Ticketsource) • LEOS Youth Group Box Office - Mobile No. 07864 033663 • Duchess Theatre, West Gate, Long Eaton on Saturday mornings

Pesky Pests! Pests are just a part of nature but sometimes they can ruin our best efforts and so it then means we need to look at reducing them or ridding them altogether from a particlar part of our garden.... Aphids From time to time, aphids may attack almost any garden plant. Chemical: Lambda-cyhalothrin and deltamethrin are both contact insecticides which are effective only when sprayed directly onto the aphids. A suitable systemic insecticide is thiacloprid which is taken in through the leaves and is taken up by the feeding aphids. Naturally occurring insecticides such as pyrethrum and fatty acids can also be used. Don’t over-feed plants. Too much fertiliser will lead to lots of soft, sappy growth which will encourage aphid attacks. You can also encourage ladybirds as they eat aphids ‘by the truck load’! The Greenhouse If you have a greenhouse make sure you keep an eye out for pests and diseases such as whitefly -fumigate or spray the greenhouse. Keep adequate circulation as a good defence against diseases when growing such as tomato plants. Although we may have cool air in the UK the sun can still be powerful under glass so to avoid wilting try whiting out part of the glass area in the height of summer. Pot Plants Pot plants can suffer more than ground dwelling plants from pests so here are a few tips to keep them healthy for you: 1. Don't reuse potting potting mix. Don't reuse potting soil, especially if it contained plants that were affected by fungus or bacteria. Even if the soil looks fine, it can be contaminated by disease and may also have insect eggs or larvae that can't be seen. Pitch the soil or throw it in the compost. 2. Clean your containers. Clean containers helps prevent container garden problems. At the start of each new planting season, scrub your pots and containers in liquid detergent and water. For pots that may have been subjected to garden pests and disease, soak them in a solution of one part household bleach to ten parts water for about an hour. Rinse them thoroughly and allow them to air dry before planting in them.
breezemagazine 24
3. Buy healthy plants. You can avoid many container garden problems, if you always look for healthy plants and rinse them well before planting. 4. Keep your plants healthy. Make sure you give your plants their required combinations of sunlight, fertilizer and water. Healthy plants are just like us - they can fight off pest attacks better if they are healthy. Remove any dead leaves or flowers and make sure they are spaced enough that air is able to circulate around them. 5. Get rid of infected plants. If you find a plant that is polluted with garden pests and disease, isolate it or get rid of it. Don't let it infect your other plants. While you treat its problem, keep it away from your other containers, and wash your hands and gardening tools after you work with it. Pests in container gardens are more common to certain plants. Keep that in mind when you select plants for your container gardens. This is especially true of tropical plants or other plants that are not native to your area. They haven't acquired a natural resistance to all of the garden pests and disease in your area and are more vulnerable. Don't avoid these plants - after all, that's an advantage to gardening in containers - just check these plants regularly for harmful insects and take action quickly. (continues...)

sow to allow it to soak in and be ready for the seedlings when they emerge, hungry for nutrients! The final stage is to rake the level gently to a nice ‘tilth’ which is the fine, crumbly consistency we should aim for here. (...continued) Some Summer Fun! With the summer season now upon us it may be that you look around your garden and wish you had planted those early summer blooming annuals last year or got some more bedding plants going this year. You need not worry though as nature is full of colour right now so let us take a look at what we can do to get the explosion of flowery brilliance going in our little patch. For a start you can literally sprinkle some seeds down for something like Larkspur, Limnanthes or Calendula to get some colour later this summer. Prepare the soil Prepare the soil first as you don’t want to make life difficult for your seedlings to pop up from the ground! The way to do this is to dig over any compressed ground and break it down into smaller and smaller pieces. At this stage, when you have the soil nicely broken down to particles about 1cm across you could do a quick soil test to check it is not too acidic or alkaline as most seeds do not like extremes of either. A simple and inexpensive test can be bought from your garden supplier and it saves you disappointment later and adds to your knowledge of what your garden is doing (or not doing!). Apply a general purpose fertiliser about a week before you
Planting the seeds in prepared soil Follow the specific instructions for your seeds as they vary from one plant type to another as to depth and spacing. The usual technique is to drag a line in the soil to create a shallow furrow (or ‘drill’ as it is known in gardening terms!). You then plant the seeds into the furrow and gently cover over to give them the initial darkness and moisture that they need. A gentle water in (don’t go heavy handed as you will wash out the delicate seeds) completes the process with a check and water if the area you have seeded needs more moisture. You do not have to plant in neat rows as vegetable gardeners do of course - simply draw your ‘drills’ along the lines where you want any particular plant to follow if you are designing the flower bed (such as planting taller flowers such as Foxgloves at the back for instance). Wild seed mixes can be scattered randomly over an area, mimicking nature and creating a natural effect. Watering & care One danger with all seeds set in the ground directly like this is ’damping off’ once they do emerge as seedlings: this is due to any soil based fungal pathogens living at the soil surface. The best way to control this is not to over water - keep the soil moist but don’t go heavy handed - perhaps invest in a watering can with a very gentle sprinkler as hosepipes can be a bit harsh. Keep learning and remember that we have plenty of summer still left to plant. Most importantly of all.... Enjoy!

LOCAL HOSPICE LOTTERY WINS NATIONAL AWARD A local hospice is celebrating after being selected over national charity lottery providers to win the title of Lottery Operator of the Year. The award, presented by The Lotteries Council, recognises innovative and successful lottery campaigns that make a large contribution to fund the charity. Treetops, based in Risley, provides nursing care and emotional support for adults with a life-limiting illness across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The Treetops Lottery has raised over £5 million for the charity since it started selling tickets over twenty years ago. Treetops Lottery manager, Mel de Vos, was delighted to receive the award at The Lotteries Council Awards: “Winning this award was a lovely, unexpected surprise as we were up against some stiff competition. “As a team we are passionate about raising money for Treetops and feel very proud to have achieved what we have, but we know we could never have done it without the support of the lottery members from our local community. Our fantastic players all help Treetops to deliver free services to the local area - thank you!” George Cameron, Treetops chief executive added: “The lottery at Treetops Hospice Care is an important contributor to the voluntary funding we need to deliver our services. “This is a very well-deserved award for a team who work hard to ensure our lottery is well run and engages well with our supporters.” Over the last three years, membership of the lottery has risen to over 8,000 people playing the weekly prize draw. If you would like to join for just £1 per entry please visit lottery.treetopshospice.org.uk
