Welcome to our annual Homes & Gardens guide for you to keep for reference throughout the coming months. It’s time to look at home improvements, to fix, build, make over and revamp to your heart’s content. All our local experts are on hand to help you create the home of your dreams. Here’s some useful tips...

here are loads of simple things that can get the outside of your home ready for summer, like giving the outside of your house a facelift. As the evenings get lighter, you can enjoy the welcome of a smart and freshly painted entrance when you get home. A freshly decorated front door gives instant impact when you arrive, and the rest of your exterior paintwork may need sprucing up too as nothing looks worse than faded and flaking paint on the window frames. Other simple tasks might include washing your windows, and clearing the garden of any clutter. Hanging baskets, potted plants and window boxes are an ideal way to introduce instant colour to your outside areas. If you’ve got a patio area, make sure it’s clean and free of weeds – there’s nothing like weeds and dirt to make a patio look neglected. If you don’t have an outside seating area, or if you are fed up with boring grey slabs now would be the ideal time to invest in a tiled patio area, ready for the coming summer. Not only will a well-kept patio area look fantastic and be constantly used throughout the summer, but it should last a lifetime and could also increase the value of your home. The patio area is not just a functional outdoor space anymore; it is an ideal area to express your very own style and creativity. Whatever you intend to have done on Image of next.co.uk your home there are several schemes are in place across the region to help you recognise a trader that will give you the service that you deserve. Inviting a stranger into your home to do a job it can be a worrying time - will they do the job properly, will I get overcharged, what if I don’t like the end result - am I getting value for money? There is no simple answer to this but there are a few guidelines to follow that will at least bring down the chances of not getting the result you want. Always look for recommendations and testimonials - if a workman is willing to show that they have done a good job for others it will show they have nothing to hide. Ask for examples of work that they have previously done and ask if you can contact the people they did work for. Generally you should be able to get a free estimate before embarking on any work and if you like what you see, take this opportunity to get references or ask about if anyone you know has used their services before. Don’t just go for the cheapest it could cost you in the long run.

CHOOSING A STYLE

Contemporary: - To follow modern ideas in style or design. So if you are an up-to-the-minute style guru, then you will want all of the season’s latest trends in your home. This can be an expensive way to live, as designers change looks regularly to sell goods. Keep the main furniture simple and classic and keep up with modern accessories and colours to stay with the contemporary feel. Classic: - A simple elegant style not subject to changes in fashion. Classic designs are normally high quality furnishings that are elegant and timeless pieces. It is worth investing in some classic furniture as it will not date and can mix well with contemporary or traditional designs. Traditional: Long established and a style Traditional styles are those that have been around for years and are from a certain time or period. For example, if you live in a Victorian property and you were to have the décor ‘in keeping’ with the house, you would use traditional furnishings to that period. An older property looks better with a more traditional or classic look than and urban contemporary design.

Eclectic: - Style or taste from a broad or diverse range of sources. If you fall into this group then you would like to mix an array of furnishings and designs together and create a really unique look. You can create a real ‘shabby but chic’ look with an eclectic style. A mix of antique furniture and contemporary designs together can look fantastic, but must be done properly. This style is great for those with a love of old classics and a penchant for the latest designs. Minimalist: - Style with clean simple lines and as little fuss as possible. A minimalist design is just what it says - minimal. Surfaces are clear and clean and easy to the eye. There is very little detail on furnishings and ornamental clutter is a no no. This look goes well with a contemporary design.

Remember when choosing a style, you are an individual and your home should reflect your personality and taste. If you like all of the styles then either go for an eclectic style or have different looks for different rooms. Take time to give your home its mark of identity and if you are still undecided then why not plump for a contemporary kitchen, an eclectic lounge, a classic dining room, a minimalist style bedroom and a Victorian bathroom!

DECORATING For a classic and elegant look different tones of creams and mushrooms can be used together, just painted in block formation with different tones applied to facing walls and insets. If you like bold colours like reds or aubergines use them on one wall only. As strong colours can really dominate a room you need to have fairly large and light rooms to use them. However, if you use them on one wall and paint the others white or cream, you can still have the dramatic effect in a smaller room without closing in the space. The accent of this one colour can be dotted around in other accessories. Although stencilling is a little dated, if the right design is used it can look really stunning. To make a room seem more cosy paint your ceiling a darker colour, as this gives the impression of lowering the height. This can give a great feeling in a dining area or bedroom. Do not go too dark or it can be oppressive. If you have an artistic flair you could try your own mural. These can be fantastic in childrens rooms or where you want to create a particular theme.

KITCHENS Make sure you have enough workspace for all your chopping, slicing and dicing by keeping surfaces clean and clutter free. Consider investing in a handy butchers block trolley to extend your work zone. Don’t become a domestic gadget shop. You`re likely to only use deep fat fryers, yoghurt makers and bread bakers once in a blue moon, meaning they`ll simply clutter up your valuable work tops the rest of the time. Don’t have all your appliances squeezed together like a scratch and dent electrical store. Space them out. It looks soooo much better‚

BATHROOMS Bathroom sanitary wares can be any colour as long as they’re white coloured suites are as wrong as mini skirts on chunky thighs. Opt for water repellent flooring such as ceramic tiles, sealed stone or Amtico. Carpets in the bathroom are simply quagmires of human debris and bodily emissions. Built in mirrors help to bounce light around to create a brighter, fresher space. And keep all personal bits and bobs concealed in slick storage cabinets.

HALLWAYS

LIVING ROOMS

Most hallways are simply a narrow passage through the rest of your home, so don’t fill yours with obstacles. That means losing the 34 coats that are hanging behind the door and ditching that broken bicycle. If you’ve got decent proportions, think about adding a console table dressed with lamps and an artwork. Doing this will bring a dead space to life and make your home seem much larger too. This is especially valid when selling up, as you’ll create the impression of an extra room. Hallways take heavy traffic so opt for hardwearing floor coverings and don’t forget to have a great big welcome mat for a foot wipe before entering.

Avoid sofas that are shell shaped, floppy, velour covered, fringed or wrapped in a visible ‘antique’ timber frame. Sofas should be self coloured, strongly structured, comfortable and practical for you and your family. Light covers will show up dirt more easily but the dirt’s still there on the dark ones, so surely it’s better to see it and deal with it than pretend it doesn’t exist? Don’t push furniture into the corners of the room in an attempt to make it feel bigger - it won’t! Instead, fill out the space by bringing a coffee table into the centre and dressing your furnishing around a focal point, like a fireplace. Narrow consoles look fab positioned behind sofas, especially when dressed, either side, with a couple of gorgeous lamps. Don’t be swayed by fashions - just because ‘glamour’ is big news in interiors this season it doesn’t mean to say you should follow that route. Find a style you like and stick to it. And remember, room proportions will be affected by your choice of colour.

Don’t air your dirty laundry - invest in a large, stylish laundry basket and keep your smelly smalls away from prying eyes. Make sure your bedroom is relaxing - avoid bright garish colours and opt for a tonal, muted approach to decor. Spoil yourself and go wild with cashmere throws, Candles and soft lighting - you’ll love yourself in the morning!

FLOORING If you want to try something new why not Bamboo flooring? It is one of the hardest natural materials available for flooring and is an excellent alternative to hard wood. Exceptionally hard wearing and as it can be harvested every 3-5 years, unlike 15-25 years for most wood, makes it a very environmentally friendly product for flooring. Vinyl can be a very cost effective solution - installation is incredibly simple compared to other flooring types and vinyl combines low maintenance with high durability. Whilst It's not considered to be a fifty -year floor surface its low cost means that a change in pattern is affordable and easy. Whatever your choice of flooring there’s never been such a huge choice to complete your home.

ACCESSORIES Why not Personalise your home with a piece of local art? It’s a fantastic way to get an individual look to your home and artists are always looking to explore new ideas so you are bound to find soemething that really excites you. Placing your chosen art prints or framed images in the location about six to nine inches above a sofa will help create a unified look. Don’t forget the frame - a professional farmer can custom frame artwork to coordinate with room decor - this is an excellent way to compliment your decorating style. Select matt colours that can enhance both the art and colour scheme. The thoughtful use of colour is essential as well - use one colour at least three times in a room. By varying the height of any table top accessories to create patterns in the way levels change for balance and interest you can make the most of existing items - take a look at what you already have and add to these for a cost effective ‘freshen up’. Don’t be afraid to recycle or discard items you have simply grown tired of. If you want a more formal look to your room try symmetrical groupings of art which helps bring together a sense of order. By choosing asymmetrical groupings you create a more informal scheme. Mirrors can be used to reflect something beautiful. They also help to add dimension, expand space or reflect light in a room - especially useful for tight spaces. Make a feature of your art images by displaying them on easels to create an interest in corners, bookcases or even on table tops. Your choice of accessories can really make your home the space to relax in and enjoy.

Keep windows clean to brighten up your outlook and increase illumination indoors. Up to 15 per cent of natural light can be lost through grubby panes. Avoid ‘novelty’ doorbells that play the Birdie Song, Mull of Kintyre or Greensleeves what kind of first impression is that? Extend a warm welcome by having a tastefully painted front door - say no to fuchsia pink and lime green and hello to Oxford Blue, darkest green or moody Black. So there you have it. Our ultimate guide to creating the perfect home. In a world so thoroughly preoccupied with financial gain and getting top dollar at sales time, it’s about time we realised that the biggest return our homes should provide is on a daily basis. Enjoy!

BEAT THE INTERNET CHEATS With terms like ‘Phishing’ and ‘Pharming’, countering the online threat can be confusing. Here is the Breeze guide to some of the main dangers of internet crime.

C

omputer users should be warned of a telephone cold calling scam in operation. Scenario: A bogus tech support company calls to say that there is a problem with the user's PC. The scammers then take control of the unsuspecting user's PC remotely over the Internet and purport to fix the problem. The scam works by making consumers think their computer has a problem. The scammers ask the user to type commands into PC which then displays a list of information about their computer which is generally harmless but looks impressive. At the end of the call the victim is asked to pay a fee by credit card - if the user does not agree the computer is blocked out and the remote control software remains on the PC. Worse still by giving access to their computers the victims are giving away private information stored on their PCs which could result in their identity theft. Steps to protect: • Apply common sense to the situation - How can the cold caller know that you even have a PC let alone a problem with it? • Do not accept cold calling either from the phone or the door • Take regular backups Always be certain that you are dealing with an authorised contact genuine companies do not ask for detailed information out of the blue and use secuity checks first. They also respect your refusal if you are not comfortable with giving information and should offer to help by different means. Always read carefully any pop up menus that appear on your screen don’t press the ‘yes’ button without knowing what you are agreeing to. An offer of money off may sound appealing when purchasing on-line but be aware of hidden costs that can be taken off your credit card and you won’t even realise until it appears on your statement! Keep your computer up-to-date by installing the latest Internet Protection and Windows Updates recommended by an accredited professional. Again don’t press the ‘Update’ button automatically without know what you are authorising the computer to update. Seek professional advice if you have any doubt - a quick phone call to a local expert could save you money in the long run.

BASIC TERMS USED IN INTERNET FRAUD:

Phishing: Emails pretending to be from a legitimate organisation (typically a bank). The sender asks you to ‘confirm’ personal information for some made-up reason (they can even claim to know you may be a ‘suspect of identity theft’!). Be aware that ‘phishing’ can also happen by phone - someone pretending to be from a company or government agency, making false claims and asking for your personal information. Pharming: In this latest version of online ID theft, a virus or malicious program is secretly planted in your computer and hijacks your Web browser. When you type in the address of a legitimate web site, you’re taken to a fake copy of the site without realising it. Any personal information you provide at the fake site, such as your password or account number, can be stolen and fraudulently used. Spam Filter: Can help reduce the number of phishing emails you receive. Anti-virus software: Scans incoming messages for ‘infected’ files and places them in a ‘quarantine’ space on your computer where they can be deleted safely. Anti-spyware: Looks for programs that have been installed on your computer and track your online activities without your knowledge, can protect you against pharming and other techniques that phishers use. Firewalls: Prevent hackers and unauthorized communications from entering your computer – which is especially important if you have a broadband connection because your computer is open to the Internet whenever it’s turned on. Chain Emails: A chain email is an email that you are asked to send on to your contacts. Some chain emails threaten you with bad luck if you don't pass them on. Others promise a small contribution to charity if you do pass them on. These are both scams. Don't pass on a chain email. Delete it before opening. Useful websites & contacts: www.banksafeonline.org.uk www.getsafeonline.org.uk www.scambusters.org www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/watch_out www.identitytheft.org.uk Notts police 0300 300 99 99 to report non emergency crime.

Oddfellows invite you to join them on 14th June. The Oddfellows Society was originally set up in 1810 to help protect and care for its members, at a time when there were no trade unions, no welfare state and no National Health Service. This tradition of helping people has continued to the present day. “We do not have any political or religious persuasions and we are open to all sexes, our motto being “Fellowship and Friendship” The meetings follow a simple format with news from the Derby District and Oddfellow events and outings that are taking place throughout the country. They cover a welfare section for their members but usually the biggest discussion is on up and coming social events. The local branch, called the Pares Lodge, meets on the second Monday of each month at the Rose and Crown in Draycott at 7.30pm. Why not go and join them for the whole evening or just for the social side at about 8.30pm

“A three day course! Not for me, I’m retiring. I’m just going to enjoy myself and take it easy; I don’t need to make plans or be told how to pass my time” Well that’s fine, we hope you do enjoy yourself and are able to relax a bit more. But is that all there is to retirement, isn’t there a bit more to it than that? For example, how can you be sure that you have received, without prejudice, the best financial advice to safeguard your future, so that you can enjoy yourself without worry. Do you have any questions about taxation in retirement, such as “if I have a part time job will I pay tax and, if so, how much?” or “how much will my investment be affected.” “If I live in my villa in Spain, will I still receive my Government pension?” What about your legal rights – “can I still obtain credit when I retire?” If I have to go into residential care, will I have to sell my property to pay the fees?” These are some of the questions that have been answered on the “Planning For Change” courses that are currently running. The course covers all these topics and much more. Other topics include:• Fitness/health/diet • State Pensions and benefits • Safety/Security • Consumer advice And yes, even tips on how to enjoy your retirement! Nottingham & District Pre-Retirement Council is a not for profit making Registered Charity and have been arranging pre-retirement courses for over forty years. All of the Course Facilitators are retired themselves and so can give first hand experience and advice.

CANCER [22nd June-21st July]

Due to circumstances beyond your control certain plans go tipsy turvy at some point. You plan a day in which a meeting takes place with a successful outcome, allowing a more positive outlook on life. Looking forward to a break of kind you literally prepare to switch off from the outside world and enjoy being with those you love. A blast from the past has your thoughts and emotions reeling and coming to terms with information received puts a closure on part of your life.

After a hectic few days at the start of June you begin to slow down feeling more content, having achieved and completed something of importance to both you and your partner. With plenty of ideas to keep you busy discussions are held regarding a change of environment with something to look forward to. Taking stock of finances you plan the rest of month carefully after splashing out on something new. Checking paperwork you make sure everything is up to date.

TAURUS [21st April-21st May] Any thoughts and consideration toward others takes a back seat until you are ready to deal with present situations. Closing the door to one chapter in life may prove difficult but you soon come to terms with the reality of it all. With someone you know shedding light on what could be yours in the future you find you have some serious thinking to do. More relaxed and settled toward the end of June decisions are made which please and secure special relationships long term.

It’s a matter of getting rid of the old and bringing in the new which keeps you very much occupied this month. Loved ones are delighted when they can start afresh with new and bright ideas for the home. Celebrations get under way when least expected with a chance meeting-taking place. Taking up new hobbies and interests and meeting new people boost your confidence and self-esteem. Some financial gain may be sought to help with present situations. A happy outcome.

LEO [22nd July-21st August] Positive and self reliant you decide to draw a line to what you will or will not do this particular month. No longer taking into consideration another persons point of view, you make a move, which confirms your position to others making them stand up and take note. Travelling against your will takes its toll but you soon find a way or sorting this out. Over indulging and overspending likely when stressed, be on guard. Making up for lost time brings a smile to someone’s face.

VIRGO [22nd Aug-21st Sep] Organised and raring to go you prepare yourself for a busy and fulfilling time ahead. Feeling stronger and more determined to see something through. A day away does the trick in keeping a clear head and bringing new and bright ideas in for the coming weeks. Younger members of the family keep you busy when least expected with rewards following. Surrounded with books and paperwork during one day you de clutter with a possibility of losing an item sentimental value.

‘Platinum Skin Care Centre’ is now open in Beeston. Owner Sharon Oakes from Attenborough is a popular beauty therapist who has built a promising reputation with her indepth knowledge and treatment therapies to help people achieve healthy skin. Sharon says “I have been interested in beauty therapy since I was a teenager but after leaving school the only training available was at a private college which was unaffordable at the time. However, years later I was provided with an opportunity to train at Clarendon College’s first ever course in ‘beauty therapy’ which was designed for mature students. Since training, I have worked in salons in Toton, Chilwell and Bramcote but have now achieved my ambition to open my own business. I now have the ideal opportunity to provide my clients with a professional and personalised service that I believe many salons fail to deliver. When younger, I was personally troubled by sensitive skin but this was dramatically improved through the use of Dermalogica products which I discovered and started to use over fifteen years ago. I truly believe in the range of products Dermalogica has to offer and many of my clients have achieved relief from long standing problems. As well as Dermalogica facials and retail products I offer CACI non surgical facial toning, Jessica manicures, pedicures and retail products as well as Clean + Easy waxing. To summarise, my aim is to take away the mystery of skin health and help my clients achieve the healthy skin they have always desired. Each specialised treatment and home-use recommendation will be professionally customised to suit every client’s skin needs - I truly believe that everyone deserves healthy skin”. Situated within ‘Robert Howes Hairdressing’ on Derby Street, the unit has been professionally designed to provide clients with hygienic and relaxing surroundings. “The location is perfect for anyone coming into Beeston and there’s even a large car park right behind the business” said Sharon. The Platinum Skin Care Centre is open from Tuesday to Saturday. Sharon is looking forward to meeting new and existing customers soon. Call Sharon today on (0115) 922 2248
