make blood your business With thousands of patients receiving blood transfusions every year, NHS Blood and Transplant is challenging businesses in the Nottingham area, to make a date to save lives. Organisations are being invited to book an event in their workplace where employees can sign up, find out their blood type and make a date to donate. Donated blood is vital for a wide variety of life-saving procedures in Nottingham hospitals. Patients undergoing major surgery and emergency treatment often require blood transfusions, but perhaps less well-known is the fact that blood is essential to the treatment for many different types of cancer and blood disorders. Jo Walker, NHS Blood and Transplant’s Marketing & Business Development Manager for the North, said: “Every time someone donates a unit of blood, their donation saves or improves the lives of up to three people. Blood donations are precious. “Regular blood donors in Nottingham have already helped to save thousands of lives and we cannot thank them enough. Unfortunately, a number of these donors may no longer be able to donate in the future due to health or other reasons so we need local businesses to come forward, invite us into their workplace for a recruitment event and help us to ensure patients in Nottingham always get the blood they need.” Organisations with over 300 employees will qualify for a recruitment event; those with smaller workforces can still support NHSBT through other channels and are also invited to get in touch. In general, as long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating. To find out more about donating blood or to book an appointment, call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

beautiful setting
With beauty and history right on our doorstep, Strelley Hall holds a wealth of historical facts most of us may be unaware of. Why not visit and find out where the first railway was built between Strelley and Wollaton!
The Mulberry Tree Café in the converted stables at Strelley Hall provides a great ambience - you can still see the imprints of the horses' kicks on the walls from centuries ago, and on sunny summer days the pretty courtyard garden makes a lovely relaxing spot. If you fancy indulging in a Deluxe Afternoon Tea with friends or family then this is just the place - freshly made crustless sandwiches, a piece of homemade quiche, with warm homemade scones, clotted cream and jam, pieces of the delicious cakes, all served with a glass of elderflower fizz and a loose leaf tea or a house-blend espresso-based coffee. To book please call 0115 906 1305/1200 or email mulberry_cafe@outlook.com The Bluebell Dairy ice creams are always popular, how about a slice of Belgian chocolate fudge cake with a scoop of Cookies‘n Creme ice cream? The Mulberry Tree Café is also launching a new menu in June, the emphasis is still on high quality freshly-made food with delicious drinks – loose leaf teas supplied by Grey’s Teas and custom-blended espresso-based coffees – and in addition there are new salads on offer for the warmer months. Opening in June in the Stable yard next door to the Café is a new craft shop – ‘Created by Hand’, selling quality locally-made crafts and gifts; now taking bookings for a variety of craft workshops. Strelley Hall is a historic Georgian building surrounded by lovely gardens and is used primarily as a business centre, with beautiful large function rooms which can also be booked out for parties, conferences, wakes or other functions, with all catering supplied by the Mulberry Tree Café. breezemagazine8

created by hand
Created By Hand is owned and run by fused glass artist David Humphreys and as the name suggests the shop specialises in promoting the finest handmade gifts and art, from some of the best artists and designer makers in the region. David began working with glass in 1997 and his first piece (a stained glass tiffany style lamp) he still has today. After many years working with stained glass David bought a kiln and started fusing and slumping glass. Although coming from an engineering background, a series of life changing events made David prioritise the important things in life and he now focuses his attentions on what he loves to do the most - working with glass. “We are keen to promote talented local makers and artists through the shop, be that in ceramics, jewellery, paper, mixed-media or of course, glass. If its high quality unusual, unique or something that makes you smile then we want to know about it”. After two successful years running his first shop in Chilwell, David is now opening a new shop in the grounds of the prestigious Strelley Hall. The new shop will be larger, with a dedicated gallery/exhibition room and space for offering numerous workshops. With the wonderful Mulberry Tree Cafe already on site Strelley Hall is rapidly becoming a ‘Must Do’ destination for Nottingham. Workshops on offer will include Glass Fusing (of course), Mosaics, Chinese Brush Painting, Decorative Copper Embossing, Felt Making, Batik to name a few. So, if you are looking for unique gift, or simply want to treat yourself, then visit Created By Hand and chat with Dave to see if he can find you that perfect gift, piece of art or just persuade you to take up a new hobby. Slimming World groups just keeps giving Caring members from local Slimming World groups have collected over one hundred bags of clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of to raise money for Cancer Research UK. On the same day the bags were donated, consultants went on to share just how tasty and easy healthy cooking can be with a free food taster to the public. Consultants who run Slimming World groups in Beeston, Bramcote, Chilwell, Dunkirk and Wollaton encouraged members to spring-clean their wardrobes and collect clothes they’ve slimmed out of. These would then be used as valuable stock for the Beeston Cancer Research UK shop. Groups were taking part in the organisation’s national fundraising campaign, the ‘Big Slimming World Clothes Throw’, which last year raised £1.7m for Cancer Research UK, and are aiming raise £2m for the charity this year. With each bag worth up to £25, the local consultants couldn’t be prouder of their members
enthusiasm, dedication and commitment once again. Consultant Kerry McKenna said: “I can’t believe just how many bags our members have donated. It’s been so rewarding and I’m so happy to do my part to help pull together such a phenomenal amount of stock for such a worthwhile cause.” Consultant Margaret Burton added “Knowing they’ll never need their ‘before’ clothes again, when I told my groups about the campaign they couldn’t wait to take part. Not only is the Clothes Throw a perfect way to celebrate our slimming success, it’s also vital we spread the message that keeping a healthy weight could reduce the risk of developing some cancers. This is why Slimming World chose Cancer Research UK as our national charity partner.“ Once the donations were handed over, the consultants then headed to Iceland in Beeston to prepare a free food taster for the public. Along with free information, recipe books and Slimming World magazines, consultant Gemma-Louise Williams prepared a huge pan of meatballs in tomato sauce to dish out to passers by.

blooming great tea party Marie Curie is calling on people across Nottinghamshire to hold a Blooming Great Tea Party between 20-29 June and support the charity which provides care and support for people living with a terminal illness.
breezemagazine16
Whether it’s a big garden party for family and friends or a small bake sale at work, every donation from a Blooming Great Tea Party will be helping Marie Curie Nurses care for more people living with a terminal illness across the UK. Beth Fisher, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie said: “It’s easy to support Marie Curie with a Blooming Great Tea Party and it really is up to you how you decide to join in. Last year we had everything from a Mad Hatters Tea Party to Blooming Great Cake stalls and this year we would like residents throughout the county to go one step further and tell us about their tea-riffic plans. Every pound raised will enable us to help even more people living with a terminal illness which includes those we support directly across Nottinghamshire through the Nottingham Nursing Service and our Helper Service” To register or for tea party inspiration visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/teaparty or call 0800 716 146. music, singing & dance Sharing stories is a wonderful way of encouraging people; inspiring them and giving them a greater sense of hope. On Tuesday 26th July, Beeston Methodist Church has the privilege of welcoming a children’s choir from a place called LIV Village in Durban, South Africa to share with us some of their story through music, singing and dance.
breezemagazine18
LIV exists because there are over 5 million orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa, mostly due to HIV/AIDS and poverty, with 12,000 added to this every month. LIV exists to raise the next generation of leaders in South Africa. They place orphaned and vulnerable children into a family environment with a trained foster mother to love them, a school to educate them, and where all their physical needs are met. LIV exists to equip these children with essential moral values and life skills so that they will grow up to be a generation that will influence positive change within South Africa, Africa and the world. LIV exists to rescue a child. LIV exists to restore a life. LIV exists to raise a leader. LIV exists to release a star. This story of hope for a better South Africa and a better world is one that is told best by the people who have given their lives to write it. Tich and Joan are coming to Beeston, along with 18 of their children to share that hope with this community and this nation. “Please come along and join us in this evening of joy and celebration as people from different nations come together. Entry is free and the event begins at 6:30pm at Beeston Methodist Church on Chilwell Road. There will be refreshments available afterwards to give opportunity you to chat with the Tich and Joan and the children. The Lord Mayor will also be joining us on this very special occasion. Come along and a part of something wonderful and hear about how we can make a difference; whoever we are and wherever we are. Together we can! “

day in the dales People from across the UK are invited to join national charity Heart Research UK and Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority's Three Peaks Project for a family Day in the Dales event on 18 June.
Set within the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, this FREE event gives families plenty of fun and activities while raising money to fund research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease - as well as maintaining the Three Peaks path for future generations. As part of the Day in the Dales walkers can also sign up for Heart Research UK’s 20th Yorkshire Three Peaks sponsored event to climb Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside Heart Research UK is keen to get families being active together as around 80% of 5-15 year olds in England fail to meet the current physical activity recommendations and 27% of UK adults do not achieve even 30 minutes of exercise each week. At the Day in the Dales event there’s something for everyone including traditional sports like tug-of-war, skipping, sack and egg and spoon races as well as country stalls, local produce, and fairground rides. Cream teas and ice creams will bring even more summer to the event. There’s a 5K nature trail designed to get children excited about countryside and woodland walks, encouraging them to note the sights and sounds around the village, learn about nature and to keep an eye out for house martins and woodpeckers. Barbara Harpham, National Director at Heart Research UK said: “Day in the Dales will be a great day out, giving families the opportunity to get out of the city and get active while enjoying a great day out in the countryside. There's also a sports day for kids; challenges; stalls and games, as well as rides and nature exhibits. Our 5K Nature Trail gets families walking, finding, collecting and learning.” Money raised at the Day in the Dales will be spent on helping hearts near you and to protect the Three Peaks paths for generations to come. Heart Research UK ask people to raise money by getting sponsored for the 5K Nature Trail. “Whether you walk alone, with your friends or family you’ll love a great day out in the spectacular Yorkshire Dales, joining hundreds of other walkers.” Anyone interested in taking part can ring 0113 234 7474 or visit www.heartresearch.org.uk/did or www.heartresearch.org.uk/3-peaks

volunteer week Volunteers ‘Week’ runs this month, so why not look what you can do to give something back and find something rewarding in the process... Over 21 million people volunteer in the UK at least once a year and this contributes to an estimated £23.9 billion to the UK economy. Behind these big numbers is a big contribution. These 21 million are a shining example of how we can all make a big difference to individuals and communities every day from improving the environment we live in, spending time with those who may otherwise be lonely and contribute to a range of other essential services and support. At the Volunteer Centre in Erewash we provide vital direct services with the help of volunteers in the form of befriending, sitting to allow carers a break, shopping and transport. Just one hour a week makes a huge difference to someone’s life and for the volunteer it too can alleviate loneliness, help to make new friends and learn new skills. Free training is available as well as social events. People from all walks of life volunteer and all ages from teens to people in their 80s and beyond – it is therapeutic! For anyone wishing to find out more about volunteering opportunities please contact the team on 0115 946 6740, email linda@erewashcvs.org.uk, visit the Centre on Granville Avenue in Long Eaton or check out the National Volunteering Website: www.do-it.org.uk and search for roles of interest via your postcode. As well as direct services the Volunteer Centre advertises other groups and organisations’ opportunities via Do-it.

Have you got a happy hopper? Would you know if your bunny had a low-grade health disorder? Do you know what preventative care you need to arrange to keep your rabbit in good health? Research by the PDSA shows that most rabbit owners can only recognise a problem when their bunny is very poorly. Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) is here to help. RAW runs from June 11th-18th and Churchcroft Vets are supporting this with special rabbit offers. They are offering free health checks for rabbits through the whole week to make sure everyone’s bunnies are in perfect health. In addition, Churchcroft are hosting a rabbit information day on Saturday June 18th from 2-4pm. Everyone is welcome to this FREE event where they’re going to have an afternoon for detailed discussion of all the important elements of rabbit care. There will be displays including photos of common rabbit health problems, information to take away and staff on hand to discuss any queries in more detail. Rabbits are also welcome to come for a health check on this day. There’s more information on their website www.churchcroftvet.co.uk about their rabbit information day or you can call on 0115 922 4855 to book a free rabbit health check.

‘THE SUN WILL COME OUT TOMORROW’ breeze promotion AT STAGECOACH BEESTON'S ‘ANNIE KIDS’ SUMMER WORKSHOP 15-19 AUGUST 2016 Beeston, Nottingham – Stagecoach kids will be fully dressed… with a smile when Stagecoach Theatre Arts Beeston presents its production of Annie KIDS as part of its summer workshop running from 15-19 August 2016. The musical is part of the MTI Broadway Junior Collection®, MTI’s special collection of musicals for younger performers. Based on the popular comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” Annie KIDS tells of a spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents, who left her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan's evil machinations, befriends President Franklin Roosevelt and finds a new family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell and a lovable mutt named Sandy. Annie KIDS reminds us about the importance of community. By engaging her community in her search for her parents, this charismatic orphan finds her family in a way she never anticipated. Similarly, these Stagecoach Beeston students, who all have different strengths and interests, will work together to offer their own unique interpretation of this musical. Stagecoach Theatre Arts Beeston will present Annie KIDS on 19th August, at The Alderman White School for their families (tickets not available to the public). The workshop is open to Stagecoach students and nonStagecoach students aged 6-18, and costs £150 for the full week. No previous experience necessary. A great way for any young budding actors or actresses to spend a week of their summer holidays! To book, please call Debbie on 0115 8510352 or visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/beeston/holiday-workshops Annie KIDS is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

blooming lovely! The annual ‘Draycott Open Gardens Weekend’ is the next big event on Draycott’s calendar where the village invites everyone to join them and enjoy the labours of their hard work. Opening on Saturday and Sunday, 25/26 June from 11am to 5pm, visitors will get the opportunity to explore more gardens than ever before. There are already over 20 beautiful and interesting gardens, of all shapes, sizes and stages of development being opened by residents. Alongside the opportunity to see these wonderful gardens (some being opened this year for the first time) visitors to Draycott, at any time, cannot help but see what a community spirited place it is. During the Open Garden Weekend, visitors will be able to see the Community Projects that have helped Draycott gain Silver Gilt two years running in the ‘East Midlands in Bloom’ competition. Open space planting, special features, including the giant planted wheelbarrow, and being developed this year, a Community Allotment behind the Coach and Horses Public House, have all helped Draycott to gain the success it has and the residents are proud to share that success with visitors. And of course, expect to see again the usual planted ‘wellies’ that have become rather a trademark feature for the village with many houses and community groups planting them up and displaying them outside. As in previous years, where planting schemes have focused on aspects of Draycott life, such as lacemaking, this year they are looking to introduce bicycles as a theme as there was once a hugely successful cycle chain and wheel company in the village. As well as plant and craft sales, refreshments will be available from various venues throughout the village. Sunday afternoon visitors will also be able to enjoy a brass band concert. If you’ve been before, you’ll know the treat that is in store. If you have never visited Draycott or enjoyed the Open Gardens Weekend, then make sure you put the date in your diary! The entry fee is £2 per adult and covers the whole of the weekend, so you can spread your tour over the two days. You can purchase Open Garden ‘Maps’ the week before the event from Dundas the Butcher in Breaston or various businesses in Draycott on the day. For more information about Draycott in Bloom and other events, visit http://draycott-in-bloom.org.uk Draycott Village Fund and Draycott in Bloom are non-profit making Community Groups. Any proceeds from events goes towards funding future events for the community and towards the purchase of plants that are enjoyed by all throughout the year.

perennial joy! It should now be starting to hot up weather wise and you should see the results of previous planting of perennials - if not then now is the time to start! Whilst the very popular ‘bedding plants’ always come into focus at this time of year as it is about warm enough for them to grow here in the UK in summer, it is not the only type of plant you should have in your garden. Perennials are great for that ability to ‘magically’ pop up each year to give us lots of free colour. They may start off looking rather diminutive if you buy a small (and therefore more affordable) starter plant, but they soon start to grow bigger each year giving you masses of colour in some examples. Think of poppies and you will soon get the idea of what a perennial is. Most forest plants are perennials, including trees and shrubs. In our country perennial plants grow and bloom during the warm part of the year, with the foliage dying back in the winter. These plants are referred to as deciduous

perennials. When they regrow it is from existing stem tissue - which you will see looking rather sorry for itself during the winter months! Some perennials are evergreen, such as We should compare our own garden climate so that it suits where a plant is known to grow well (including any ‘micro climates’ which we have looked at in previous issues). If you want some foliage all year round then look for something evergreen. Examples of evergreen perennials include Begonia, Azalea and Rhododendron. For those seeking a culinary reward for their efforts try these perennial herbs: Basil, Chives, Oregano, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme. It is useful to know that these herbs won’t grow all year round in the garden but do come back the following spring/summer. For colour - which is what we are usually seeking at this time of year - there are many flowering types of perennial plants which will offer colour each summer without planting as we have to do with Annuals (the average bedding plants bought each summer season from garden centres etc). Perennials like reasonably well drained soil in general - so use sand if you have slightly ‘heavy’ soil. Totally avoid clay type soil. Here are some Perennial types which flower
to check out - make sure that whatever type you choose that you plant it in the appropriate part of your garden. Here are some perennial plants for your shopping list: • Foxglove 'Illumination Pink’ A tall plant that will reach around 1mtr tall and is a hybrid of the hedgerow foxglove and the not so hardy but beautiful Canary Islands version. A stocky plant that flowers profusely. It is a half-hardy semi-evergreen plant so try to avoid anywhere too exposed to chill winds.
• Viola 'Freckles' This is a deciduous perennial that grows to about 20cm tall and has broadly ovate leaves and 2cm wide white flowers evenly speckled with violet. It flowers from spring through summer. You can buy plants ready to place now or seed in late winter/early spring so think ahead!
• Rudbeckia This one flowers from early July right through to mid November! Keeps your garden looking ‘sunny’ through summer and autumn.
• Pieris A fantastic plant that gives lovely foliage all year round (which turns reddish in autumn) and flowers in summer. (continues...)

GOING AWAY FOR YOUR HOLS? THINK WATER! With June being the month with the longest day to means that we should expect our plants to get plenty of daylight (and maybe some sunshine!). This means they will also be growing well and will require the right amount of water. One of the problems that many gardeners face is when they go away. They come back from a summer break to their lovingly tended plants looking withered, tired and not the lovely healthy plants they went away from. Here are some tips to help you stay on top of the all important watering whilst you are away: GEL CRYSTALS Another short term solution is to add water retaining gel to your baskets and pots - helps over a few days but not much longer if not watered regularly. Now for something that will deliver more water and will attach to your outside tap:
MAINS TAP DRIP WATER FEEDER: you will need: • Water pressure reducing valve (this is essential and fits on the tap first reducing the water pressure down to a manageable level for the smaller tubes we will attach). • A basic drip water kit (this will usually have the end drip fittings which are attached to the fine gauge tubes used in these systems and can be bought for as little as around £4). • Optionally: a battery powered on/off timer (around £10 from some online suppliers) • Small length of hose. • End bung for small length of hose (brew making shops sell these - and can be clamped on with a small jubilee clip) The small length of hose is the main ‘feeder’ pipe into which the smaller pipes fit (the ones that go into your plant pots or beds). 1) Fit the pressure reducer to the main tap. 2) fit the main hose/feed pipe onto the pressure reducer 3) Set the ‘taps’ into the main feed hose (use a standard diy bradawl for this - it works just as well as the ‘tool’ often sold if you can’t get the tool that is specific for this)
4) Take the first smaller main feed line to your first pot or basket (ideally aim to do the higher ones first so the pipes then ‘run downhill’ slightly to assist flow). 5) Use the small ‘t-junctions’ that come with these kits to take sub feeder pipes to your other pots. A FEW POINTERS: • Do buy a proper pressure reducing valve. A common make is Hozelock but there are others - they are worth paying the approximately £10 for, rather than relying on a cheap one that comes with some cheaper sets. This is probably the most important thing in this type of set up. • Use small pressure reducing taps on some of the smaller feed lines to even out the pressure (sometimes there may be too much water coming out of the end nozzle on one particular pipe). You can easily purchase these from aquarium shops. • If you feel you wish to invest more and get and ’instant kit’ then look at the more expensive but excellent ‘all in’ solutions from the larger manufacturers such as Hozelock and Gardenia. These are worth it but sometimes by trying the above you can decide if this method is for you - and it is a real boon as it never misses a watering due to ‘being too busy’ or one of the other many reasons we sometimes may kill our plants with!
Enjoy!

Make your holiday guests feel welcome by updating your spare rooms or using space-saving solutions like sofa beds and other stylish pieces. By Gabrielle Fagan While entertaining family and friends at home during the holiday may be fun - not to mention exhausting - it also puts your home under a revealing spotlight. And as those extra people and their possessions put pressure on storage and space, any shortcomings and limitations can suddenly become all too clear. If that invasion makes you uncomfortably aware how your home is perceived by others, or you aren’t overwhelmed by compliments on your little palace, it could be high time to give rooms some TLC. There’s no better moment, with the shops bursting with sale bargains, to pin-point the areas that could do with improvement and turn them round. We’ve got tips on discovering hidden space at home, plus we’ve found the best buys from storage boxes to room dividers that could transform rooms.
breezemagazine38
Be warned though - it could mean those guests stay longer or clamour to return!
• Window seats: Build seats into window bays or alcoves and gain extra seating.
DISCOVER HIDDEN SPACES
• Room dividers: These can serve as bookcases or display cabinets. Simple screens are also effective.
Where space is limited, every square inch counts. The way it’s organised can make a huge difference to your home. You may be overlooking valuable space, as Elizabeth Wilhide, author of Small Spaces, points out encouragingly. “When you haven’t got a lot of room to play with, you have to focus on clever ways to used wasted corners,” she says. “Most people could probably find extra space in their home.”
SPARE ROOM STYLE Spare rooms should be comfortable, calm and inviting places where guests can retreat. It’s not impossible to achieve that atmosphere, even if it’s generally a dumping ground for clutter most of the year.
Her suggestions: • Under the stairs: Kitted out properly, this space could provide an additional seating area, a home office, a utility cupboard or a storage spot. • Stairs: Stair treads can be converted into drawers or storage spaces. There are now companies offering readymade stairs fitted with storage compartments. • Landings: Generous landings are an ideal site for free-standing or fitted storage, or maybe just a chair and small table as a retreat from the bustle of the living room.
“Pack away a multitude of clutter sins into large under-the-bed boxes, and store those throughout the house. Utilise the backs of doors with over-door hooks to hold guests’ coats and bags. It’s worth investing in some clever hanging organisers or multi-hang hangers to maximise the vertical space in the wardrobe.

Aquarius As much as you are trying to justify your actions and behaviour regarding one particular association, by now, you may be rapidly realising that you have acted too hastily and possibly lost a good friend. Gossip regarding other people surrounds you and there is a danger that you will join in by contributing your input as well.
Capricorn Relationship issues of one kind or another could be causing you a lot of necessary bother.
