dragon boat team needs you!
Nottingham’s longest-running dragon boat club, Notts Anaconda, is inviting people with any amount of experience – or none at all – to come and try their hand at one of the country’s fastest-growing sports. Alex Walters the Club Treasurer, has been with the club for seventeen years: “I first tried dragon boating as a teenager! I was asked if I wanted to come along as they were looking for ladies to join the team, I had no idea what it was but thought I’d give it a try – and found that I really enjoyed it, I’ve been here ever since, made some lifelong friends and I’ve even married the Chairman!”. “I love getting out on the water, I love being part of a team, we have a good banter and camaraderie in the sport – and there’s not a lot that can beat that feeling of anticipation and excitement sitting on the start line of a race, let alone the sense of triumph when we win – even if it’s by less than half a second.” Dragon boat racing originated in China over 2,000 years ago. The boats raced today are 40 feet long and are constructed from glass fibre, rather like large canoes. Wooden gunwales and seats help to retain a traditional look. The boats are fitted with a colourful dragon’s head and tail, plus a drum for racing. A crew consists of between 16 and 20 paddlers sitting side by side, with a helm standing at the back to steer the boat and a drummer beating in time. Basically think of a 40 foot canoe with paddlers paddling in time to the tune of Hawaii five 0 and you’re there! Notts Anaconda has grown from small beginnings in 1994 to a team to be reckoned with, now competing and bringing home trophies in the British Dragon Boat Association’s national league events around the country. Notts Anaconda train on the river at Trent Bridge. There are sessions every Wednesday evening at 6pm and Sunday morning at 10am. The clubhouse is next to the Britannia Rowing Club adjacent to the Nottingham Forest Football ground. To find out more, visit the website, or call or email us to join in at any training session. Notts Anaconda always welcomes new members (ages 14 and above), with or without any amount of sporting experience. For more information visit www.nottsanaconda.co.uk or call Alex on 07977 922849.

get your home ready for the spring rush... Local leading estate and lettings agent Bairstow Eves in Beeston is gearing up for the traditional spring rush of home buyers to the market and the expected surge in activity over the Easter weekend. “The warmer sunshine and longer days traditionally attract more buyers to the market, so it is clear to see why spring is seen as the ideal time to sell your home,” says Alex Knight, Branch Manager of Bairstow Eves, Beeston. “We are currently finding that buyers and sellers are more optimistic about the housing market conditions, properties that are correctly priced and pro-actively marketed are selling well. We expect these next few weeks to be a busy period for us and we are looking forward to helping more people to move home.” Bairstow Eves has outlined some top tips to help you sell or rent your home for the best price this spring and ensure your property stands out from the crowd: Choose the right agent - An agent with a strong local network of branches and an extensive Internet presence will inevitably have access to more buyers. Correct asking price - Make sure you take good advice on the likely selling price, do your homework and find out what prices similar properties in the area are selling for. Spring clean - De-clutter your home and minimalize personal possessions, a ‘blank canvas’ can help buyers to visualise how their furniture, belongings and personal style can be added to the property.

DIY - Consider making minor improvements. Things like wonky shelves, loose door handles and missing tiles are often overlooked by sellers but can be off-putting. There are often cheap, quick and easy to fix. Utilise space - Ensure each room is set out as it was intended, so a dining room should be a dining room and not a storage area. This will give buyers or renters a better idea of how they can utilise the space If you are thinking of buying or selling a property and want further information about the local housing market or would like to arrange a free market appraisal or a property survey, contact the team at Bairstow Eves, Beeston on 01159017597 or visit http://www.bairstoweves.co.uk/

breeze promotion Microchip SPECIAL OFFER: IMPORTANT NEWS, avoid a £500 fine! From April 6th this year it is a legal requirement that all dogs over eight weeks old must have a microchip. Keepers of dogs found not to have one will be fined £500. The law has been brought in to reduce the number of stray dogs in the U.K. and hence reduce the number of traffic accidents and other problems to which stray dogs contribute. To help ensure that all dogs are legally compliant by the due date, Churchcroft Vets have offers on both the types of microchip that they offer. The basic microchip is on offer for just £10. This is a standard microchip that is perfect for identification purposes. Churchcroft Vets also offer a particularly high class microchip. This is the same size as the basic chip and is also perfect for identification purposes. However, it has an extra benefit, it can tell the temperature. This can be a great bonus for pets who find the process of having their temperature taken uncomfortable or unpleasant. This chip is on offer for just £25 for those who prefer to pamper their pet. The microchip offers are available for all pets so you can get your dog, cat, rabbit or other pet permanently identified for the same low fee. If you haven’t yet got your dog legally compliant or if you just want to take advantage of these great deals call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and they will be pleased to help.

Majority of 40 somethings over-estimate amount of inheritance they will receive
Many people in their early 40s are expecting to receive an average inheritance of £180,217 a recent study has revealed, with one in ten planning to use the money they inherit from their family to fund their retirement completely. However, the reality is that the average inheritance this age group is likely to receive is nearer to £69,871. The reason for this over-estimation is that only 39% of these 40 somethings have actually spoken to their parents about inheritance, and as a result the amount of inheritance they are expecting to receive is most likely a guess based on the value of their property, and does not consider the costs of care or inheritance tax. For those in their early 50s, 54% have spoken to their parents about inheritance, and for those in this age group they expect to receive an average inheritance of £83,550 which is not far off the amount they probably will receive. The findings of this study clearly suggest that it is important to speak to your parents about inheritance as at the very least by doing so it will establish how much family members are likely to receive, so they can make plans for receiving their share. Another benefit of discussing it is that it allows people to make alternative plans for funding their retirement, especially if the amount they expected to receive vastly differs from the amount they probably will receive. It is also worth looking at the potential inheritance tax bill and ways this can be reduced when discussing inheritance with family members.
Only 2% of Britons have taken action to reduce their bill despite 40% having concerns that inheritance tax will have an effect on the amount of inheritance they receive. One way of reducing the amount of tax is to give regular and habitual gifts out of excess income if you can afford it as normally gifts are added back into your estate if you die within seven years of making the gift, whereas these gifts are considered to be outside your estate immediately. There are also other lifetime gift allowances available which enable you to give £3000 away in a year and marriage gifts to children and grandchildren in a way that is immediately outside of your estate.
For advice or information on inheritance and how to reduce inheritance tax, contact our Wills, Probate and Trusts team on 0800 158 5316

breezegardening have replanted your perennials to avoid any problems and make sure you get some slug pellets or other countermeasures in place too as they can be vulnerable to this type of attack whilst regrowing.
Perennial care Now is the time to start work on getting ready for late spring and summer by lifting and dividing any overgrown lumps of perennials (ornamental grasses, salvias, Hostas etc). This is best done now as these plants will not be in active growth and the soil is usually quite soft at this time of year. Just lift up using a garden fork, working gently to tease the roots up from the centre. Shake off the soil and replant in their new position as soon as possible, watering them in well. You can pot these up and let them sit in a warmer and frost free area over winter as well so that they grow just that bit stronger for transplanting into the ground. With perennials such as Hostas they can be sliced apart down the middle with a sharp clean spade as they have fibrous roots. Larger clumps can then be split further giving more individual plants to move elsewhere if required. Keep on top of the watering when you
breezemagazine 24
Container refresh This is a good time to top dress any containerised plants you may have too. Simply remove 5cm old compost from the top of the pot and replacing with fresh compost. This helps to keep the nutrient levels and the general structure of the compost fresh and is much healthier for the plant. Summer bulbs For that floral feast to come get things in place now: March is an ideal time to plant out your herbaceous perennials, including Geranium, Astrantia and Oriental poppies. Plant summer-flowering bulbs. Prepare the soil first, to ensure that drainage is sufficient to prevent the bulbs rotting. Anemone coronaria tubers need particularly welldrained soils so take care to make the right soil mix using grit sand in it. Know your soil If you are new to the hobby (maybe you have just moved to a new house and now have a garden to ‘play’ with) then one thing to do is buy a ph test kit and start off on the right footing by knowing your soil type. This is not a mere technicality for the pedantic as this factor alone can make or break your
gardening efforts until you understand how to control it or plant the appropriate types of plant. pH runs on a scale from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral. The lower the number the higher the acidity. Higher means more alkaline and therein lies the balancing act of nature (us humans have evolved to like being around 7.35). Most cultivated plants enjoy slightly acidic conditions with a pH of about 6.5. This is not always the case though and blueberry, azalea and holly all like to be around ph 4.5 - 5 which is slightly acid. It’s worth finding out which plants you like and assessing what ph they like and also if they need a sunny position because these two factors can be killers if they are wrong for the plant. The basic rule for easier gardening is to buy the plants that suit the soil. However, we can treat the soil to get the results we want, this is simply a case of understanding and then applying the effort. Another answer is to use containers where you can completely control what goes in there. This is a neat solution and will suit many gardeners. They can also be moved around if you want a change. Start this growing season by learning (you can read our back issues online where we have covered these topics and more). Look forward to better weather and more time spent in our little patch. As always... Enjoy!

breeze promotion Spruce up your garden this spring with the help of Bradshaw Tree Services. If you have a garden that’s more weeds than wisteria, perhaps you’ve recently moved to a new home, you’re short of time and energy or just don’t possess green fingers, then getting a helping hand to have a thorough clear out and starting afresh could be a job worth doing this spring. Trained arboriculturalist David Bradshaw has over twenty five years of experience and runs his own business, Bradshaw Tree Services, offering a full and competitively priced range of tree and garden services. David set up by himself three years ago having worked in various jobs including on behalf of the Forestry Commission since qualifying in Arboriculture at Brooksby College, Melton. He decided it was time to go it alone, knowing that he prefers to handle private work and confident that he could offer a personal approach alongside a quality job and good value for money. “I really enjoy what I do,” says David. “Lots of my customers want a big clear out at this time of year to get on top of any unwanted growth and prune back trees to give the new growth a chance to come through. Sometimes they are planning whole redesigns and I can suggest a few ideas for when the landscapers come in afterwards. I have lots of specialised equipment such as my own chipper to make the job more efficient, and will organise the hire of other pieces of kit as required such as cherry pickers and cranes.” All the wood generated is recycled. Hard wood is kept for firewood and any woodchip or waste wood, such as from conifers, is burnt elsewhere to help dry out firewood. He quotes on a job by job basis following a site inspection so that any potential complications such as BT lines, out buildings and greenhouses can be taken into account. He holds full public liability insurance and will consider all sizes of jobs. To contact David call 0115 784 2344 / 0773 5360612 or email bradshaw72@me.com and then sit back and look forward to a summer enjoying your newly refreshed garden
