Every year local gardeners open up their gardens for you to enjoy - why not go along and help raise some funds whilst delighting in the gardens of our area... BEESTON AND CHILWELL GARDEN TRAIL, 11TH AND 12TH JUNE The Beeston and Chilwell Garden Trail is a popular community activity in Beeston and Chilwell. One weekend in June every year, local people open their gardens to the public. Not only does this raise significant sums for various charities, it also provides a fascinating opportunity to see local gardens of all shapes and sizes. This year 13 gardens are opening. Some have been open before and others are new this year. The gardens vary enormously in size and style. The owners will be there over the weekend to provide information about the plants and the garden. In addition to the gardens themselves, the owners sometimes offer additional attractions. Some provide refreshments, others sell plants. There are activities for children, and this year 3 different choirs are performing. Some people like to go to all of the gardens, others just to a selection. Some can only come on one day, but others come on both days. We have many visitors who return year after year whatever the weather! The price is remaining at £3.50 per person, which covers all gardens and both days, with children going free. Just turn up at any of the gardens and buy your ticket and then show it in all of the other gardens. Typically the Trail raises over £4,000 for charity. Each garden owner choses their own charity and has an equal share of the entry money, plus whatever additional money they raise by selling teas or plants. If you would like to know more about the Trail, please go to the website at www.beestonandchilwellgardentrail.org.uk where you will find full details of all the gardens that are open this year. The dates this year are Saturday 11th June and Sunday 12th June. On both days the open times are 1.00pm. to 5.00pm. “Do come along – we would love to see you!”

Currency Exchange Variation Not all currency providers are the same, many will advertise a high rate which is only available when exchanging large sums.

A new provider coming to Beeston, PALMERS, will display a rate that all of its customers will get no matter how much or how little they are changing and with no hidden commission or charges. They will also buy back any unused holiday money and any other currency at a great rate which will be of use to the public and Beeston’s international student community. The exchange bureau will be located in the already well established Palmers Gold Centre on Regent Street. They will also provide a cheque cashing service from as low as 2%. You will still be able to cash in your gold, silver and other valuables, at a great rate or you will be able to take advantage of their new buyback service which is the alternative to pawn broking. It allows you to sell your items for a fixed price and have the option to buy them back at a pre-agreed price. It’s as easy as that and no hidden charges. Palmers can also compete with the supply of investment gold coins, bullion bars etc. It is not widely known but both gold and silver are up by over 20% already this year...compare that to your bank interest! Palmers have been in Beeston for over seven years providing the best rates for gold in the area and they are now branching out to offer

other services in Beeston following their huge success at their Long Eaton branch. Their services will include jewellery repairs, cheque cashing, Buybacks, cash for gold and of course currency exchange. You will find Palmers located opposite CP Walker, directly behind Robert Ellis Lettings at the top of Regent Street, with the added bonus of free parking directly outside or in the adjacent car park next to broadgate park. teachers of the future...

breeze promotion

Bluecoat SCITT Alliance is an accredited School Centred Initial Teaching Training provider (SCITT). Our sole purpose is to train outstanding teachers for the future, working in partnership with many secondary and primary schools in the region. School based training (school direct) allows us to customise the training to meet the needs of both the school and our trainees, who gain practical experience from day one, and become very much a part of the school and are seen as a member of staff. It is a great way to learn and qualify to become a teacher, by offering candidates support from their future colleagues who have a wealth of experience. They will also benefit from further learning opportunities to develop their teaching skills and progress quickly into leadership positions. There are salaried, or bursary supported routes of training both lasting one year. We are looking forward to receiving applications from those individuals with the potential to be outstanding teachers. Don’t take it from us, this is what our trainees say about our programme and training ….. “All trainees are really well supported throughout their training, it is hard work but it’s worth it” “I enjoy coming together for our training day on Fridays, where we can share our experiences from our placement schools, and take away excellent advice and information that we take back into the classroom. I’ve made some great friends too!” We are part of Bluecoat Academies Trust; we offer school experience where you can get an insight into life in school spending 1 – 10 days within the Academy. saying goodbye services Families who have suffered the pain of baby loss at any stage of pregnancy, birth or in infancy are invited to join a special service on Saturday the 9th July 2016, at 3.00pm, at Derby Cathedral. The International ‘Saying Goodbye’ services help families pay tribute to their lost babies and provide an opportunity for people to say goodbye. The Saying Goodbye services, are the first set of national commemorative services to take place in Cathedrals and Minsters across the UK. This is one of over 20 International services this year and the third time the service has come to Derby. The service will feature contemporary music, as well as poetry and readings, mixed with acts of remembrance and time for reflection. The service is free to attend and open to anyone of any faith or no faith. It is hoped that people from across Derby, Derbyshire and beyond will take the time to come to what are always beautiful and deeply moving services. The Saying Goodbye services were established by Staffordshire couple Zoe and Andy Clark-Coates, who have lost five children through miscarriage. Zoe explains "Approximately one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, which means that nearly 680 babies are lost each day leaving parents, grandparents, siblings and family friends in the depths of grief. We decided to take our experience of loss and create an organisation that could help others who have previously, or are currently going through the grief of losing a baby. The aim of the charity we set up called The Mariposa Trust, is to help support those who have suffered the pain of losing a child at any stage.” Andy commented: "Having lost five babies, we experienced firsthand how loss can affect people. We wanted to create services that would give a wonderful goodbye to babies that have been lost, and allow the parents to grieve in a supportive environment. When you have parents saying 'this is the first time in 50-years that I am being able to grieve and say goodbye', you understand that whether it happened yesterday or half a century ago, the pain is still there, and people need help and support. We wanted to allow people from the region to have access to a Saying Goodbye service and the support that we offer.” Zoe added: "A loss before 24 weeks gestation is not recorded with a certificate, which leaves the parents with no official recognition of the baby's life. As miscarriage often takes place at home without medical intervention, people can be left with no avenue for grief, and as no memorial service usually takes place, the opportunity to officially recognise the unborn life, can just pass by. With stillbirth and early infant loss, services are usually conducted quickly whilst parents are in the depth of despair, and not at a time when people can truly take onboard and process the grief. Saying Goodbye aims to give people the opportunity to remember their lost baby in a fitting way, whilst also uniting with others who have faced similar sadness." Professor Robert Winston, one of Saying Goodbye's many Ambassadors, said: “Miscarriage is often something that’s not acknowledged or talked about in the UK, and people certainly do not appreciate how utterly distressing it is for women, and indeed their extended families. It’s a loss of a precious life, and whether the loss happens in early or late pregnancy it’s traumatic, and a natural grief process must be allowed to happen. I hope that these services will be a turning point in the nation, and through this new organisation miscarriage will become more widely understood, and families will know that their pain and loss has been heard and recognised.”

The 16th Annual Schools Music Festival took place at The Fernwood School. The Head Teacher of Fernwood, Mrs. Tracey Rees, welcomed the packed audience, and comperes Megan Ellis and Daniel Gribbin got the evening under way. Fernwood Primary Lower School choir were first on stage starting with a tribute to David Bowie singing ‘Starman’ accompanied by teacher Simon Holroyd on piano and guitar. Firbeck Primary were next up and they seamlessly became the ever popular signing choir ending with a ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry. “Our hosts, The Fernwood School, brought a new dimension to the concert with their jazz band playing versions of ‘La Bamba’, ‘Candyman’, and a rousing and competent rendition of ‘Mercy, Mercy, Mercy’. It was pleasing to see Brocklewood Primary School back, and they showed some real promise ending with the Taylor Swift number ‘Shake it off’. Back again, and even better, were Nottingham Girls Academy Harmony Choir coached as ever by Lisa Downie. They included a Zulu number, Siku Rin Wana accompanied by some traditional instruments.” Fernwood Primary Upper School choir completed their set with ‘Don’t Stop Believin’. Certificates and cheques, the proceeds from ticket sales, were handed to each school by President Elect Eileen Morley. The two Fernwood Primary School choirs then joined forces for a resounding finale singing Adele’s, Someone Like You. The thunderous applause said everything about the success of this annual event for which the club can be justly proud. This was further endorsed by two emails the next day: Firbeck Primary wrote: “Thank you for last night. Our children really enjoyed performing in the Festival. They particularly enjoyed being able to perform on a stage and really enjoyed seeing the other children. Some of them were inspired by the older children and have expressed that they would like to be them when they are older.” Brocklewood Primary School wrote: “I just wanted to send a quick email to say how much we enjoyed taking part in the concert last night. It was the children’s first real performance and I think they did us proud, I know they certainly loved every second. You are so right about the power of experiencing other choirs and musicians as I feel it totally motivated my choir to rise to the occasion and raise future aspirations, a great experience all round for them. So thank you to you and all your colleagues who put effort into making these events happen for the community and also thank you for the cheque which will be put to good use.”

We often eat because we love the taste, or because it’s good for us. Sometimes, however, food does more than just nourish our bodies. Sometimes flavours can remind us of good times, or past celebrations, or a sense of home. We all have a dish or meal that that is special to us – and this National Vegetarian Week is your chance to celebrate them... National Vegetarian Week 2016 (16-22 May 2016) is all about your food, stories and traditions, and you can tell others all about them, simply pull up a chair and visit our online ‘Kitchen Table’ at www.nationalvegetarianweek.org Now in its twenty-fourth year this celebration of all things veggie is a great time to talk about food, traditions and those special dishes. PROTECT YOUR PET – AND YOUR POCKET! 2016 has seen some real changes for pet owners in Nottingham. There is a new law now in force with a £500 fine for those who have not microchipped their dogs. In addition, the vets at Churchcroft Veterinary Centre in Chilwell have identified a tick that is new to the area and has the potential to spread devastating disease especially amongst dogs. This is therefore a really important time to make sure you are fully up to date with preventative care for your pet. Fortunately, Churchcroft Vets are holding their new low prices of £19.95 for boosters and just £29.95 for puppy vaccination courses as these have been very popular. You can also get your pet microchipped at the same time as a vaccine for just £10. Of course this would also be an ideal time to discuss your flea and tick prevention strategy with one of the experts at Churchcroft Vets. Don’t delay. Call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 and get your pet booked in for full protection now.

Vegetable planning App Veg.gg helps families in urban areas engage children with healthy, home-grown food. Children who are educated and involved in the origins and growth of fresh produce from a garden are likely to eat more fruit and vegetables than those who aren’t, studies suggest. Creating a working vegetable patch to engage and excite children in small urban gardens however is a challenging task, with many modern families not having access to the level of horticultural knowledge required to launch a successful vegetable garden. Vegetable planning app Veg.gg is a smart tool that helps any urban gardener, young or old, every step of the way towards achieving the perfect patch of healthy crops for all the family to enjoy. Eating well and eating right is becoming of increasing concern for much of the general public. As well as making more efforts to eat a balanced and nutritional diet, many are also aware of the environmental impact of the mass food production that fuels many big supermarket chains. Whether it be for health or for ethics, many individuals are now considering taking the steps required to grown their own organic vegetables. Creating a working vegetable patch can also help concerned parents ensure their children form great eating habits from an early age. Until recently however, ‘growing your own’ has not been part of mainstream culture. Modern life has moved many families away from rural areas and into urban towns and cities, where gardening is not common practise. In these cases many turn to a local allotment for gardening ground but increase in demand, coinciding with this surge of horticultural interest, means that space is not always available for those who desire it. Using Veg.gg can combat this, helping disappointed gardeners utilise whatever small space is available to them at home to cultivate a thriving vegetable patch. “When I first started growing my own vegetables five years ago I didn’t know where to begin and ultimately the success of my crops suffered. After much searching around however I found the simple but effective no-dig Square Foot gardening technique and it has worked for me ever since!”. Commented Karl Phillips, creator of Veg.gg. He continued “Veg.gg is based around this Square Foot technique, with planting suggestions to help urban gardeners, of any experience, achieve tasty and healthy vegetables time and time again”. First, users can tell Veg.gg where their garden is and the app will create a virtual square foot bed to represent the patch. The tool suggests which vegetables are best to plant and why, before any seeds are sowed and logged in the app. Gardeners can return to the app to reference in which grid each seed is planted and to see reminders of planting times which are invaluable reference points. Finally, Veg.gg notifies users when each vegetable is ready to harvest and takes you through the whole process to continue throughout the season! Families can enjoy healthy, home grown produce with the help of Veg.gg. To find out more visit http://veg.gg/

breeze promotion BRAND NEW KIP MCGRATH MATHS AND ENGLISH EDUCATION CENTRE – JUST OPENED IN LONG EATON! The new Kip McGrath Education Centre delivers professional tuition in English and maths to ages 6-16 years. We create individualised programmes for every child, delivered by qualified, experienced teachers. The centre’s team delivers to the UK’s key stages 2 and 3, and GCSE in the core subjects of maths and English. Reading and spelling are also taught. We aim to build confidence as well as skills. The programme is suitable for gifted and talented children as well as those in need of additional support. We offer a FREE assessment for each child which identifies any skills gaps. The success of Kip McGrath methodology has been proven for forty years and is used exclusively in over five hundred private education centres in twenty countries around the world. At the heart of the Kip McGrath system is the combination of computer, worksheet and textbook activities. Each lesson is broken up into ten minute blocks over eighty minutes, so even the most reluctant pupil doesn’t get bored! On average, pupils progress two years in forty lessons. It maybe that a child needs fewer lessons, in order to fill just a few skills gaps. Each child is assessed using a specifically designed testing method and the results are used to create an individualised learning plan. The computer manages each child’s learning activities depending on their rate of progress which allows teachers to do what they do best – teach, motivate, build confidence and inspire! A computer cannot motivate a struggling pupil or know when a child needs further intervention, only the guidance of a teacher can do this. We have a very experienced and committed team of teachers to deliver the very best for each child. Kip McGrath is the only programme in the world that has been designed especially for filling gaps in a child’s knowledge. This system ensures that there is a very firm foundation in place for further learning, and success. This will make future learning easier and … enjoyable! There is no obligation to sign up for lessons following your child’s free assessment. The centre is now open between 4-7 pm in the evening and on Saturday mornings. Contact us NOW to discuss your child’s educational needs!

colour me! With the recent frosts hopefully gone now for the summer it is, at last, time to dare plant out for some colour in our little patch. For good and colour intense summer displays, choose plants that flower over a long period of time, respond well to deadheading and are tolerant of container use. Containers are a great way to move colour into areas that may only get enough sun at the height of Summer so, in a sense you can track the sun and keep your plants flowering. Plus, you can place them near to where you sit out - the whole reason for them in the first place! A wide range of suitable plants are available in garden centres around now. They do say ‘don’t cast a clout ‘till May is out’ so still keep an eye on the frost potential and have some fleece ready to lightly cover if so.

Patio Plants Tender perennials, often referred to as 'patio plants' are the typical plants you buy each late spring. Some, such as fuchsia can overwintered in the greenhouse as plants or rooted cuttings as well as bought fresh each year.

breezemagazine 34

Annual bedding plants are also good which include nasturtium and pot marigold. It is possible to use hardy perennial plants, such as lavender, which can later be planted out in the garden. By tying the colours and sizes of flower you would expect to see you can plan ahead to get a nice focal point such as a shrub which helps to give structure and a context to the smaller flowering plants around it. Choose a focal plant such as a structural shrub or annual climber grown on a small tripod for the centre of the scheme. Shrubs can be deciduous or evergreen and are woody plants. They provide a variety of fragrant flowers, berries, autumn colour, foliage and coloured stems. In addition, they add shape and a basic structural framework to the garden and provide shelter and a food source for wildlife. Surround the focal plant with a mix of upright bedding plants and some that trail over the

side of the container. Plant at least three of each to help link the theme together. Consider restricting the colour scheme so that you don’t have visual confusion for a more intense look. It is important to combine plants that have similar requirements; most summer bedding plants do best in full sun but some, such as begonias will tolerate light shade and so need to be in a different spot.

breezegardening A QUICK REFRESH OF PLANT TYPES

PLANNING FOR THE YEAR AHEAD USING BEDDING PLANTS Bedding plants come in varieties that grow and flower through spring and summer / autumn & winter so to really get great colour throughout the year you must plant out two different types of plants, at the beginning of the seasons. For summer try the combination of begonia, the flowering seedheads of ornamental grasses (such as Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’) and late-flowering salvia and verbena. For your winter display, plant perennials such as bergenia, cyclamen, hellebores and viola to give interesting foliage as well as flower colour during any mild spells we may get. If you are planting in the ground then a quick test - a suitable soil test for around £4 will help identify the soil texture and acidity or alkalinity. Ericaceous shrubs grow best in a pH range of 4-6, and ideally pH 5-5.5. Adjust using sulphur powder, gradually over several weeks and re-test as you go. If you have ever been disappointed with the performance of your vegetables or flowers, even though you gave them the best care you could then pH might have been the problem. Plant roots absorb minerals such as nitrogen and iron only when they are dissolved in water. If this soil "soup" solution (the mixture of water and nutrients in the soil) is too acid or alkaline, some nutrients won't be dissolved, and as a result, they are unavailable to plants. They are said to be "locked up." The other factors that can affect your plants growth are it’s location in your particular garden (wind tunnel effects up paths etc) so note the number of hours of sunshine the position receives as the seasons change and assess the microclimate of your garden and choose suitable plants Consider the ultimate height and spread of the shrub as well as rate of growth so it is manageable in the future and adds to your lovely little space.

If you have missed any of our previous articles here is a quick refresh to help you: Annuals Single season plants. A Hardy Annual is sown outdoors in spring, a Half Hardy Annual is normally raised in a glass house before being planted out due to frost danger. Bedding Plants Can be Annuals, Biennials or Perennials planted out in autumn or spring to provide a temporary display - ‘summer’ plants. Hardy A perennial or annual which is not effected by frost or colder temperatures. Perennial A non-woody plant which flowers each year, dying back over winter but regrows the following spring. A hardy perennial can live for years outside. Alpine An alpine is a small perennial plant that's used in the fronts or borders, in rockeries, in walls, in paving and in containers. Biennials (two yearly) Sown outside in summer to produce stems and leaves in the first season, then flowering the following season (the 2nd year). Shrub A plant of usually low height that has several woody stems at its base but lacks a single trunk (unlike a tree of course). Deciduous: Sheds its leaves for winter. Evergreen: Retains its leaves through winter. Climber: Attaches itself to or twines around an upright structure, such as a trellis etc woody stemmed plants.

THE ACID TEST - SOIL PH EXPLAINED • First of all below 7 is acidic; above 7 is alkaline. In the middle is neutral. • It is especially worth testing soil pH before designing or planting a new garden that will contain ericaceous plants, or when growth of ericaceous plants (which are acid loving) is disappointing or shows signs of chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves). • A pH 6.5 is the best general purpose pH for gardens, allowing a wide range of plants to grow, except lime-hating plants (ericaceous) The availability of major nutrients is at its highest and bacterial and earthworm activity is optimum at this pH and it is not usually necessary to add anything to improve soil pH at this level. • Alkaline soils and plants: select from the wide range of colourful plants that thrive in dry summers, need sharp drainage and moderate to low fertility. Plants such as Campanula, Clematis, Dianthus, Geranium, Acers are happy in alkaline soils. • Soil pH can vary from one side of the street to the other so test!

As always, keep learning, trying new ideas and...Enjoy!

Scorpio

Aries

Leo

Love and passion will be so red hot that your heart will be scorched with the desire for someone you find extremely interesting and attractive, even though in some cases, you know this is either going no where or is just plain bad for you. Its as though the person in question is a drug which you cannot get enough of.

You may have been personally involved with someone unscrupulous and devious. This situation will have caused you enormous anxiety, until of course, you call a halt to such behaviour and refuse to be party to any more silliness. Spend time with loved ones and talk about your feelings more openly. Discover what you are all about and what it is you really want in order to be happy.

Taurus All of a sudden you are waking up to a number of important facts about yourself as a person, which you were totally unaware of previously. You have probably had the biggest wake up call of all time, but this was absolutely necessary in order for you to move in a forward direction. . Gemini An old flame from your past will endeavour to contact you once again, but it’s your decision as to which way you want this situation to go in. You will breath a sigh of relief over a number of issues that were disturbing you recently. There is a tendency to worry too much over the wrong things and not enough focus on your own personal needs and solutions to problems. Cancer You may feel a little miffed about someone not paying you enough attention, especially if you have feelings for them, yet you don’t feel they are playing fair. Don’t hesitate confronting the person involved in order to set the record straight, even though you normally shy away from such actions. Nothing lasts forever and nothing can stay the same. The old Chinese proverb is true. ‘Everything passes, good times and bad’.

breezemagazine 42

Virgo Perhaps you are going round and round in circles just talking about your situation and what you would like to do with the rest of your life rather than taking positive action. There could be a dispute concerning money to attend to that needs your immediate attention. Legal dealings tend to take a lot longer than originally anticipated. A dinner party invitation could lead to a fascinating new friendship with prospects of a future either romantically or business wise.

Rather than baulk and fear all the monumental changes that are taking place in your life, embrace them instead! You are in the process of massive transformations that are necessary if you are to enjoy the rest of your life. No longer are you vulnerable, gullible and believing of the old sob stories. No longer are you prepared to make other people’s problems part of your own. Instead, you are realising that you have a tremendous amount of life to live and things to look forward to. Join new clubs and societies. Shed those extra pounds. Re vamp your wardrobe. Sagittarius By allowing others to take the lead, you will give yourself enough time to catch up with other more pressing matters that have needed your attention urgently. Pay extra attention to your health and diet. If you are eating and drinking too much rubbish and putting toxins into your system, you are inviting trouble. Learn to be your own best friend and draw a line at overdoing anything that is bad for your well-being. Finances and investments will continue to interest you especially if you are involved in projects that are aimed at making money. A romantic encounter with someone out of the blue will set your heart racing.

Libra

Capricorn

Finally you are learning that all happiness comes from within your own soul and that you, and only you, are responsible for your own actions. Invite others to add to your happiness, not be the reason for your inner contentment. Certain people will not necessarily like the changes within you, preferring the old you. Needy, desperate, insecure and doubtful of you’re decision making, they will no longer feel comfortable in your space. Let them go their own sweet way. Instead, you must concentrate on your own requirements, thus attracting new energies towards you.

Its time for a little fun and frivolity. You have absolutely nothing to lose, only lots to gain by just being yourself and letting your guard down. If your mantra is ‘noting has changed, everything is still the same’, guess what? You are absolutely right! Nothing will change and you will find yourself stuck on the same merry go round day in and day out. Perhaps you fear change because there is a threat you will be hoofed out of your comfort zone and forced to do something positive with the rest of your life.

Call Linda on 0776 446 6381 Aquarius Maybe you have lived in the same bubble for so long it’s become over familiar to you and now you find it difficult allowing new people and energies into your orbit. By venturing out and taking a look at what is going on in the big world around you, you may be pleasantly surprised that there is more to life than what you imagined. Focus on improving your self-esteem and confidence and allow people to show you a new avenue to walk down and show you exactly what is available to someone with your capabilities. Pisces By listening to your inner voice and following your intuition you will make some truly good decisions. Because you are strengthening both inside and out, you can now stand confidently in your own space and watch others make either fools of them selves. If you are unattached, you may decide to pursue a new romantic interest through different channels to the norm. You enjoy being adventurous and completely different to the ordinary run of the mill individual and often possess a wicked sense of humour coupled with zany behaviour.

The Total Wipeout-style course, suitable for adults and children alike, will certainly end on a high as participants take a trip down the 200ft-long ‘Thriller’ – a slide taller than THREE double decker buses. While keen runners may aim to complete the course in a personal best time, people of all ages, shapes, sizes and levels of fitness are invited to give it a go individually or as part of a team. The fun-filled 5k is the brainchild of CBeebies presenter and Batman superfan Alex Winters, who can’t wait for the event at Wollaton Hall and Park – because it was where ‘Batman – The Dark Night Rises’ was filmed! Alex, who will also host the event on the day, said: “Part of what we want to do is take Gung-Ho! all across the country and to unique settings, and with our Nottingham venue we have hit the jack-pot. “It is the most beautiful venue we have and to top it all off it was where Batman was filmed – and I am a huge Batman fan! “When we were looking at where to take Gung-Ho! I realised Wollaton Hall was actually Wayne Manor and that was it – that was where we were going to hold it! “It’s been home to Christian Bale and Michael Caine and now for one day it’ll be home to me and thousands of runners. It is going to be absolutely amazing and a dream come true for me. “I am fully expecting to see runners dressed up as The Joker, The Riddler and Batman himself – who knows, maybe I’ll even dress up as the caped crusader! “I’ve been waiting to see how Gung-Ho the people of Nottingham can go, and pretty soon we are going to find out.” Alex came up with the idea for an inflatable obstacle course while sat in front of the TV. The idea spawned a new craze with around 16,000 people taking part in Gung-Ho!’s first three events in 2015. Tens of thousands of people are now expected to go Gung-Ho! across 13 events in 2016, while charities across the UK are also set to benefit thanks to sponsorship and local partnerships. Alex said: “I came up with the idea after watching Ninja Warrior with my kids – they were saying how great it would be to do something like that. “I immediately thought of It’s a Knockout, Takeshi’s Castle, Total Wipeout – TV shows that I and other people love but are never going to be able to take part in. I thought: ‘What if there was something like them available for the public, something everyone could do?’.” Tickets and more information are available at www.begung-ho.co.uk Check out Gung-Ho! updates by searching ‘Gung-Ho! on Facebook and on Twitter, at @begungho. By ordering now you can get tickets for just £30, but prices go up closer to the event.

A brand new walking and cycling route has officially opened following many months of work to launch the Broxtowe Country Trail. Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw launched the new trail, which is 27 miles of walking and cycling routes which connects with the Erewash Valley Trail, alongside partners from Nottingham City Council. The Broxtowe Country Trail zigzags across Broxtowe’s boundary with the city and because of its connections with the Erewash Valley Trail, means it is possible to circumnavigate Broxtowe using these trails. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “The opening of the Broxtowe Country Trail is a very exciting day for Broxtowe after many months of hard work to establish a new walking and cycling route in the borough. “This is the first new trail in Broxtowe for a long time and we hope that local people from across Nottinghamshire will enjoy using it and its beautiful surroundings. Councillor Nick McDonald, Portfolio Holder for Growth, Jobs and Transport at Nottingham City Council, said: “The Broxtowe Trail offers another great cycling and walking route to journey through the city and into local countryside. The City Council is pleased to be involved in this project which encourages people to cycle for fun. This will encourage more people to choose cycling as their preferred travel mode for commuting to work as well.” “The new trail offers a great way for people to either walk or get on their bikes and enjoy the best of what Nottinghamshire and its countryside has to offer,” said Councillor Kevin Greaves, Chairman of the County Council’s Transport and Highways Committee. “By linking up with the Erewash Valley Trail it provides people with a number of options for getting out and about locally, whether it’s a short stroll or something a bit more challenging.” This project was developed through a partnership led by Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council. Other partners have also been vital in the delivery of the project including Derby City Council, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, Amber Valley Borough Council, Pedals, Ridewise, Ashfield District Council and Sustrans.
